QEMU Maintainers
================
The intention of this file is not to establish who owns what portions of the
code base, but to provide a set of names that developers can consult when they
have a question about a particular subset and also to provide a set of names
to be CC'd when submitting a patch to obtain appropriate review.
In general, if you have a question about inclusion of a patch, you should
consult qemu-devel and not any specific individual privately.
Descriptions of section entries:
M: Mail patches to: FullName <address@domain>
Maintainers are looking after a certain area and must be CCed on
patches. They are considered the main contact point.
R: Designated reviewer: FullName <address@domain>
These reviewers should be CCed on patches.
Reviewers are familiar with the subject matter and provide feedback
even though they are not maintainers.
L: Mailing list that is relevant to this area
These lists should be CCed on patches.
W: Web-page with status/info
Q: Patchwork web based patch tracking system site
T: SCM tree type and location. Type is one of: git, hg, quilt, stgit.
S: Status, one of the following (keep in sync with docs/devel/maintainers.rst):
Supported: Someone is actually paid to look after this.
Maintained: Someone actually looks after it.
Odd Fixes: It has a maintainer but they don't have time to do
much other than throw the odd patch in. See below.
Orphan: No current maintainer [but maybe you could take the
role as you write your new code].
Obsolete: Old code. Something tagged obsolete generally means
it has been replaced by a better system and you
should be using that.
F: Files and directories with wildcard patterns.
A trailing slash includes all files and subdirectory files.
F: drivers/net/ all files in and below drivers/net
F: drivers/net/* all files in drivers/net, but not below
F: */net/* all files in "any top level directory"/net
One pattern per line. Multiple F: lines acceptable.
X: Files and directories that are NOT maintained, same rules as F:
Files exclusions are tested before file matches.
Can be useful for excluding a specific subdirectory, for instance:
F: net/
X: net/ipv6/
matches all files in and below net excluding net/ipv6/
K: Keyword perl extended regex pattern to match content in a
patch or file. For instance:
K: of_get_profile
matches patches or files that contain "of_get_profile"
K: \b(printk|pr_(info|err))\b
matches patches or files that contain one or more of the words
printk, pr_info or pr_err
One regex pattern per line. Multiple K: lines acceptable.

s390x/vfio: ap: Introduce VFIO AP device Introduces a VFIO based AP device. The device is defined via the QEMU command line by specifying: -device vfio-ap,sysfsdev=<path-to-mediated-matrix-device> There may be only one vfio-ap device configured for a guest. The mediated matrix device is created by the VFIO AP device driver by writing a UUID to a sysfs attribute file (see docs/vfio-ap.txt). The mediated matrix device will be named after the UUID. Symbolic links to the $uuid are created in many places, so the path to the mediated matrix device $uuid can be specified in any of the following ways: /sys/devices/vfio_ap/matrix/$uuid /sys/devices/vfio_ap/matrix/mdev_supported_types/vfio_ap-passthrough/devices/$uuid /sys/bus/mdev/devices/$uuid /sys/bus/mdev/drivers/vfio_mdev/$uuid When the vfio-ap device is realized, it acquires and opens the VFIO iommu group to which the mediated matrix device is bound. This causes a VFIO group notification event to be signaled. The vfio_ap device driver's group notification handler will get called at which time the device driver will configure the the AP devices to which the guest will be granted access. exec: Build page-vary-common.c with -fno-lto In bbc17caf81f, we used an alias attribute to allow target_page to be declared const, and yet be initialized late. This fails when using LTO with several versions of gcc. The compiler looks through the alias and decides that the const variable is statically initialized to zero, then propagates that zero to many uses of the variable. This can be avoided by compiling one object file with -fno-lto. In this way, any initializer cannot be seen, and the constant propagation does not occur. Since we are certain to have this separate compilation unit, we can drop the alias attribute as well. We simply have differing declarations for target_page in different compilation units. Drop the use of init_target_page, and drop the configure detection for CONFIG_ATTRIBUTE_ALIAS. In order to change the compilation flags for a file with meson, we must use a static_library. This runs into specific_ss, where we would need to create many static_library instances. Fix this by splitting page-vary.c: the page-vary-common.c part is compiled once as a static_library, while the page-vary.c part is left in specific_ss in order to handle the target-specific value of TARGET_PAGE_BITS_MIN. docs/system: Split target-arm.rst into sub-documents Currently the documentation for Arm system emulator targets is in a single target-arm.rst. This describes only some of the boards and often in a fairly abbreviated fashion. Restructure it so that each board has its own documentation file in the docs/system/arm/ subdirectory. This will hopefully encourage us to write board documentation that describes the board in detail, rather than a few brief paragraphs in a single long page. The table of contents should also help users to find the board they care about faster. Once the structure is in place we'll be able to move microvm.rst from the top-level docs/ directory. All the text from the old page is retained, except for the final paragraph ("A Linux 2.6 test image is available on the QEMU web site. More information is available in the QEMU mailing-list archive."), which is deleted. The git history shows this was originally added in reference to the integratorcp board (at that time the only Arm board that was supported), and has subsequently gradually been further and further separated from the integratorcp documentation by the insertion of other board documentation sections. It's extremely out of date and no longer accurate, since AFAICT there isn't an integratorcp kernel on the website any more; so better deleted than retained. docs/system: Convert qemu-cpu-models.texi to rST This doc was originally written by Daniel P. Berrangé <berrange@redhat.com>, introduced via commit[1]: 2544e9e4aa (docs: add guidance on configuring CPU models for x86, 2018-06-27). In this patch: - 1-1 conversion of Texinfo to rST, besides a couple of minor tweaks that are too trivial to mention. (Thanks to Stephen Finucane on IRC for the suggestion to use rST "definition lists" instead of bullets in some places.) Further modifications will be done via a separate patch. - rST and related infra changes: manual page generation, Makefile fixes, clean up references to qemu-cpu-models.texi, update year in the copyright notice, etc. [1] https://git.qemu.org/?p=qemu.git;a=commit;h=2544e9e4aa As part of the conversion, we use a more generic 'author' attribution for the manpage than we previously had, as agreed with the original author Dan Berrange. docs/system: Split target-arm.rst into sub-documents Currently the documentation for Arm system emulator targets is in a single target-arm.rst. It's extremely out of date and no longer accurate, since AFAICT there isn't an integratorcp kernel on the website any more; so better deleted than retained. hw/arm: Add arm SBSA reference machine, skeleton part For AArch64, the existing "virt" machine is primarily meant to run on KVM and execute virtualization workloads, but we need an environment as faithful as possible to physical hardware, for supporting firmware and OS development for physical Aarch64 machines. This patch introduces new machine type 'sbsa-ref' with main features: - Based on 'virt' machine type. - A new memory map. - CPU type cortex-a57. - EL2 and EL3 are enabled. - GIC version 3. - System bus AHCI controller. - System bus EHCI controller. - CDROM and hard disc on AHCI bus. - E1000E ethernet card on PCIE bus. - VGA display adaptor on PCIE bus. - No virtio devices. - No fw_cfg device. - No ACPI table supplied. - Only minimal device tree nodes. Arm Trusted Firmware and UEFI porting to this are done accordingly, and the firmware should supply ACPI tables to the guest OS. The minimal device tree nodes supplied by QEMU for this platform are only to pass the dynamic info reflecting command line input to firmware, not for loading the guest OS. To make the review easier, this task is split into two patches, the fundamental skeleton part and the peripheral devices part; this patch is the first part. hw/arm: Add arm SBSA reference machine, skeleton part For AArch64, the existing "virt" machine is primarily meant to run on KVM and execute virtualization workloads, but we need an environment as faithful as possible to physical hardware, for supporting firmware and OS development for physical Aarch64 machines. Arm Trusted Firmware and UEFI porting to this are done accordingly, and the firmware should supply ACPI tables to the guest OS. docs/system: Split target-arm.rst into sub-documents Currently the documentation for Arm system emulator targets is in a single target-arm.rst. It's extremely out of date and no longer accurate, since AFAICT there isn't an integratorcp kernel on the website any more; so better deleted than retained. hw/mips: Add Loongson-3 machine support Add Loongson-3 based machine support, it use liointc as the interrupt controler and use GPEX as the pci controller. Currently it can work with both TCG and KVM. As the machine model is not based on any exiting physical hardware, the name of the machine is "loongson3-virt". It may be superseded in future by a real machine model. If this happens, then a regular deprecation procedure shall occur for "loongson3-virt" machine. We now already have a full functional Linux kernel (based on Linux-5.4.x LTS) here: https://github.com/chenhuacai/linux Of course the upstream kernel is also usable (the kvm host side and guest side have both been upstream in Linux-5.9): https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git How to use QEMU/Loongson-3? 1, Download kernel source from the above URL; 2, Build a kernel with arch/mips/configs/loongson3_defconfig; 3, Boot a Loongson-3A4000 host with this kernel (for KVM mode); 4, Build QEMU-master with this patchset; 5, modprobe kvm (only necessary for KVM mode); 6, Use QEMU with TCG: qemu-system-mips64el -M loongson3-virt,accel=tcg -cpu Loongson-3A1000 -kernel <path_to_kernel> -append ... Use QEMU with KVM: qemu-system-mips64el -M loongson3-virt,accel=kvm -cpu Loongson-3A4000 -kernel <path_to_kernel> -append ... The "-cpu" parameter is optional here and QEMU will use the correct type for TCG/KVM automatically. spapr: Implement Open Firmware client interface The PAPR platform describes an OS environment that's presented by a combination of a hypervisor and firmware. The features it specifies require collaboration between the firmware and the hypervisor. Since the beginning, the runtime component of the firmware (RTAS) has been implemented as a 20 byte shim which simply forwards it to a hypercall implemented in qemu. The boot time firmware component is SLOF - but a build that's specific to qemu, and has always needed to be updated in sync with it. Even though we've managed to limit the amount of runtime communication we need between qemu and SLOF, there's some, and it has become increasingly awkward to handle as we've implemented new features. This implements a boot time OF client interface (CI) which is enabled by a new "x-vof" pseries machine option (stands for "Virtual Open Firmware). When enabled, QEMU implements the custom H_OF_CLIENT hcall which implements Open Firmware Client Interface (OF CI). This allows using a smaller stateless firmware which does not have to manage the device tree. The new "vof.bin" firmware image is included with source code under pc-bios/. It also includes RTAS blob. This implements a handful of CI methods just to get -kernel/-initrd working. In particular, this implements the device tree fetching and simple memory allocator - "claim" (an OF CI memory allocator) and updates "/memory@0/available" to report the client about available memory. This implements changing some device tree properties which we know how to deal with, the rest is ignored. To allow changes, this skips fdt_pack() when x-vof=on as not packing the blob leaves some room for appending. In absence of SLOF, this assigns phandles to device tree nodes to make device tree traversing work. When x-vof=on, this adds "/chosen" every time QEMU (re)builds a tree. This adds basic instances support which are managed by a hash map ihandle -> [phandle]. Before the guest started, the used memory is: 0..e60 - the initial firmware 8000..10000 - stack 400000.. - kernel 3ea0000.. - initramdisk This OF CI does not implement "interpret". Unlike SLOF, this does not format uninitialized nvram. Instead, this includes a disk image with pre-formatted nvram. With this basic support, this can only boot into kernel directly. However this is just enough for the petitboot kernel and initradmdisk to boot from any possible source. Note this requires reasonably recent guest kernel with: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=df5be5be8735 The immediate benefit is much faster booting time which especially crucial with fully emulated early CPU bring up environments. Also this may come handy when/if GRUB-in-the-userspace sees light of the day. This separates VOF and sPAPR in a hope that VOF bits may be reused by other POWERPC boards which do not support pSeries. This assumes potential support for booting from QEMU backends such as blockdev or netdev without devices/drivers used. net/virtio: add failover support This patch adds support to handle failover device pairs of a virtio-net device and a (vfio-)pci device, where the virtio-net acts as the standby device and the (vfio-)pci device as the primary. The general idea is that we have a pair of devices, a (vfio-)pci and a emulated (virtio-net) device. Before migration the vfio device is unplugged and data flows to the emulated device, on the target side another (vfio-)pci device is plugged in to take over the data-path. In the guest the net_failover module will pair net devices with the same MAC address. To achieve this we need: 1. Provide a callback function for the should_be_hidden DeviceListener. It is called when the primary device is plugged in. Evaluate the QOpt passed in to check if it is the matching primary device. It returns if the device should be hidden or not. When it should be hidden it stores the device options in the VirtioNet struct and the device is added once the VIRTIO_NET_F_STANDBY feature is negotiated during virtio feature negotiation. If the virtio-net devices are not realized at the time the (vfio-)pci devices are realized, we need to connect the devices later. This way we make sure primary and standby devices can be specified in any order. 2. Register a callback for migration status notifier. When called it will unplug its primary device before the migration happens. 3. Register a callback for the migration code that checks if a device needs to be unplugged from the guest. s390x/vfio: ap: Introduce VFIO AP device Introduces a VFIO based AP device. The vfio_ap device driver's group notification handler will get called at which time the device driver will configure the the AP devices to which the guest will be granted access. net: Introduce e1000e device emulation This patch introduces emulation for the Intel 82574 adapter, AKA e1000e. This implementation is derived from the e1000 emulation code, and utilizes the TX/RX packet abstractions that were initially developed for the vmxnet3 device. Although some parts of the introduced code may be shared with e1000, the differences are substantial enough so that the only shared resources for the two devices are the definitions in hw/net/e1000_regs.h. Similarly to vmxnet3, the new device uses virtio headers for task offloads (for backends that support virtio extensions). Usage of virtio headers may be forcibly disabled via a boolean device property "vnet" (which is enabled by default). In such case task offloads will be performed in software, in the same way it is done on backends that do not support virtio headers. net: Introduce e1000e device emulation This patch introduces emulation for the Intel 82574 adapter, AKA e1000e. The device code is split into two parts: 1. hw/net/e1000e.c: QEMU-specific code for a network device; 2. hw/net/e1000e_core.[hc]: Device emulation according to the spec. net/eth: Read ip6_ext_hdr_routing buffer before accessing it We can't know the caller read enough data in the memory pointed by ext_hdr to cast it as a ip6_ext_hdr_routing. Declare rt_hdr on the stack and fill it again from the iovec. Since we already checked there is enough data in the iovec buffer, simply add an assert() call to consume the bytes_read variable. This fix a 2 bytes buffer overrun in eth_parse_ipv6_hdr() reported by QEMU fuzzer: $ cat << EOF | ./qemu-system-i386 -M pc-q35-5.0 \ -accel qtest -monitor none \ -serial none -nographic -qtest stdio outl 0xcf8 0x80001010 outl 0xcfc 0xe1020000 outl 0xcf8 0x80001004 outw 0xcfc 0x7 write 0x25 0x1 0x86 write 0x26 0x1 0xdd write 0x4f 0x1 0x2b write 0xe1020030 0x4 0x190002e1 write 0xe102003a 0x2 0x0807 write 0xe1020048 0x4 0x12077cdd write 0xe1020400 0x4 0xba077cdd write 0xe1020420 0x4 0x190002e1 write 0xe1020428 0x4 0x3509d807 write 0xe1020438 0x1 0xe2 EOF ================================================================= ==2859770==ERROR: AddressSanitizer: stack-buffer-overflow on address 0x7ffdef904902 at pc 0x561ceefa78de bp 0x7ffdef904820 sp 0x7ffdef904818 READ of size 1 at 0x7ffdef904902 thread T0 #0 0x561ceefa78dd in _eth_get_rss_ex_dst_addr net/eth.c:410:17 #1 0x561ceefa41fb in eth_parse_ipv6_hdr net/eth.c:532:17 #2 0x561cef7de639 in net_tx_pkt_parse_headers hw/net/net_tx_pkt.c:228:14 #3 0x561cef7dbef4 in net_tx_pkt_parse hw/net/net_tx_pkt.c:273:9 #4 0x561ceec29f22 in e1000e_process_tx_desc hw/net/e1000e_core.c:730:29 #5 0x561ceec28eac in e1000e_start_xmit hw/net/e1000e_core.c:927:9 #6 0x561ceec1baab in e1000e_set_tdt hw/net/e1000e_core.c:2444:9 #7 0x561ceebf300e in e1000e_core_write hw/net/e1000e_core.c:3256:9 #8 0x561cef3cd4cd in e1000e_mmio_write hw/net/e1000e.c:110:5 Address 0x7ffdef904902 is located in stack of thread T0 at offset 34 in frame #0 0x561ceefa320f in eth_parse_ipv6_hdr net/eth.c:486 This frame has 1 object(s): [32, 34) 'ext_hdr' (line 487) <== Memory access at offset 34 overflows this variable HINT: this may be a false positive if your program uses some custom stack unwind mechanism, swapcontext or vfork (longjmp and C++ exceptions *are* supported) SUMMARY: AddressSanitizer: stack-buffer-overflow net/eth.c:410:17 in _eth_get_rss_ex_dst_addr Shadow bytes around the buggy address: 0x10003df188d0: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 0x10003df188e0: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 0x10003df188f0: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 0x10003df18900: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 0x10003df18910: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 f1 f1 f1 f1 =>0x10003df18920:[02]f3 f3 f3 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 0x10003df18930: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 0x10003df18940: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 0x10003df18950: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 0x10003df18960: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 0x10003df18970: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Shadow byte legend (one shadow byte represents 8 application bytes): Addressable: 00 Partially addressable: 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 Stack left redzone: f1 Stack right redzone: f3 ==2859770==ABORTING Add the corresponding qtest case with the fuzzer reproducer. net: Introduce e1000e device emulation This patch introduces emulation for the Intel 82574 adapter, AKA e1000e. The device code is split into two parts: 1. hw/net/e1000e.c: QEMU-specific code for a network device; 2. hw/net/e1000e_core.[hc]: Device emulation according to the spec. The new device name is e1000e. Intel specifications for the 82574 controller are available at: http://www.intel.com/content/dam/doc/datasheet/82574l-gbe-controller-datasheet.pdf Throughput measurement results (iperf2): Fedora 22 guest, TCP, RX 4 ++------------------------------------------+ | | | X X X X X 3.5 ++ X X X X | | X | | | 3 ++ | G | X | b | | / 2.5 ++ | s | | | | 2 ++ | | | | | 1.5 X+ | | | + + + + + + + + + + + + 1 ++--+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ 32 64 128 256 512 1 2 4 8 16 32 64 B B B B B KB KB KB KB KB KB KB Buffer size Fedora 22 guest, TCP, TX 18 ++-------------------------------------------+ | X | 16 ++ X X X X X | X | 14 ++ | | | 12 ++ | G | X | b 10 ++ | / | | s 8 ++ | | | 6 ++ X | | | 4 ++ | | X | 2 ++ X | X + + + + + + + + + + + 0 ++--+---+---+---+---+----+---+---+---+---+---+ 32 64 128 256 512 1 2 4 8 16 32 64 B B B B B KB KB KB KB KB KB KB Buffer size Fedora 22 guest, UDP, RX 3 ++------------------------------------------+ | X | | 2.5 ++ | | | | | 2 ++ X | G | | b | | / 1.5 ++ | s | X | | | 1 ++ | | | | X | 0.5 ++ | | X | X + + + + + 0 ++-------+--------+-------+--------+--------+ 32 64 128 256 512 1 B B B B B KB Datagram size Fedora 22 guest, UDP, TX 1 ++------------------------------------------+ | X 0.9 ++ | | | 0.8 ++ | 0.7 ++ | | | G 0.6 ++ | b | | / 0.5 ++ | s | X | 0.4 ++ | | | 0.3 ++ | 0.2 ++ X | | | 0.1 ++ X | X X + + + + 0 ++-------+--------+-------+--------+--------+ 32 64 128 256 512 1 B B B B B KB Datagram size Windows 2012R2 guest, TCP, RX 3.2 ++------------------------------------------+ | X | 3 ++ | | | 2.8 ++ | | | 2.6 ++ X | G | X X X X X b 2.4 ++ X X | / | | s 2.2 ++ | | | 2 ++ | | X X | 1.8 ++ | | | 1.6 X+ | + + + + + + + + + + + + 1.4 ++--+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ 32 64 128 256 512 1 2 4 8 16 32 64 B B B B B KB KB KB KB KB KB KB Buffer size Windows 2012R2 guest, TCP, TX 14 ++-------------------------------------------+ | | | X X 12 ++ | | | 10 ++ | | | G | | b 8 ++ | / | X | s 6 ++ | | | | | 4 ++ X | | | 2 ++ | | X X X | + X X + + X X + + + + + 0 X+--+---+---+---+---+----+---+---+---+---+---+ 32 64 128 256 512 1 2 4 8 16 32 64 B B B B B KB KB KB KB KB KB KB Buffer size Windows 2012R2 guest, UDP, RX 1.6 ++------------------------------------------X | | 1.4 ++ | | | 1.2 ++ | | X | | | G 1 ++ | b | | / 0.8 ++ | s | | 0.6 ++ X | | | 0.4 ++ | | X | | | 0.2 ++ X | X + + + + + 0 ++-------+--------+-------+--------+--------+ 32 64 128 256 512 1 B B B B B KB Datagram size Windows 2012R2 guest, UDP, TX 0.6 ++------------------------------------------+ | X | | 0.5 ++ | | | | | 0.4 ++ | G | | b | | / 0.3 ++ X | s | | | | 0.2 ++ | | | | X | 0.1 ++ | | X | X X + + + + 0 ++-------+--------+-------+--------+--------+ 32 64 128 256 512 1 B B B B B KB Datagram size Signed-off-by: Dmitry Fleytman <dmitry.fleytman@ravellosystems.com> Signed-off-by: Leonid Bloch <leonid.bloch@ravellosystems.com> Reviewed-by: Michael S. block: rename backup-top to copy-before-write We are going to convert backup_top to full featured public filter, which can be used in separate of backup job. Start from renaming from "how it used" to "what it does". While updating comments in 283 iotest, drop and rephrase also things about ".active", as this field is now dropped, and filter doesn't have "inactive" mode. Note that this change may be considered as incompatible interface change, as backup-top filter format name was visible through query-block and query-named-block-nodes. Still, consider the following reasoning: 1. backup-top was never documented, so if someone depends on format name (for driver that can't be used other than it is automatically inserted on backup job start), it's a kind of "undocumented feature use". So I think we are free to change it. 2. There is a hope, that there is no such users: it's a lot more native to give a good node-name to backup-top filter if need to operate with it somehow, and don't touch format name. 3. Another "incompatible" change in further commit would be moving copy-before-write filter from using backing child to file child. And this is even more reasonable than renaming: for now all public filters are file-child based. So, it's a risky change, but risk seems small and good interface worth it. net: add initial support for AF_XDP network backend AF_XDP is a network socket family that allows communication directly with the network device driver in the kernel, bypassing most or all of the kernel networking stack. In the essence, the technology is pretty similar to netmap. But, unlike netmap, AF_XDP is Linux-native and works with any network interfaces without driver modifications. Unlike vhost-based backends (kernel, user, vdpa), AF_XDP doesn't require access to character devices or unix sockets. Only access to the network interface itself is necessary. This patch implements a network backend that communicates with the kernel by creating an AF_XDP socket. A chunk of userspace memory is shared between QEMU and the host kernel. 4 ring buffers (Tx, Rx, Fill and Completion) are placed in that memory along with a pool of memory buffers for the packet data. Data transmission is done by allocating one of the buffers, copying packet data into it and placing the pointer into Tx ring. After transmission, device will return the buffer via Completion ring. On Rx, device will take a buffer form a pre-populated Fill ring, write the packet data into it and place the buffer into Rx ring. AF_XDP network backend takes on the communication with the host kernel and the network interface and forwards packets to/from the peer device in QEMU. Usage example: -device virtio-net-pci,netdev=guest1,mac=00:16:35:AF:AA:5C -netdev af-xdp,ifname=ens6f1np1,id=guest1,mode=native,queues=1 XDP program bridges the socket with a network interface. It can be attached to the interface in 2 different modes: 1. skb - this mode should work for any interface and doesn't require driver support. With a caveat of lower performance. 2. native - this does require support from the driver and allows to bypass skb allocation in the kernel and potentially use zero-copy while getting packets in/out userspace. By default, QEMU will try to use native mode and fall back to skb. Mode can be forced via 'mode' option. To force 'copy' even in native mode, use 'force-copy=on' option. This might be useful if there is some issue with the driver. Option 'queues=N' allows to specify how many device queues should be open. Note that all the queues that are not open are still functional and can receive traffic, but it will not be delivered to QEMU. So, the number of device queues should generally match the QEMU configuration, unless the device is shared with something else and the traffic re-direction to appropriate queues is correctly configured on a device level (e.g. with ethtool -N). 'start-queue=M' option can be used to specify from which queue id QEMU should start configuring 'N' queues. It might also be necessary to use this option with certain NICs, e.g. MLX5 NICs. See the docs for examples. In a general case QEMU will need CAP_NET_ADMIN and CAP_SYS_ADMIN or CAP_BPF capabilities in order to load default XSK/XDP programs to the network interface and configure BPF maps. It is possible, however, to run with no capabilities. For that to work, an external process with enough capabilities will need to pre-load default XSK program, create AF_XDP sockets and pass their file descriptors to QEMU process on startup via 'sock-fds' option. Network backend will need to be configured with 'inhibit=on' to avoid loading of the program. QEMU will need 32 MB of locked memory (RLIMIT_MEMLOCK) per queue or CAP_IPC_LOCK. There are few performance challenges with the current network backends. First is that they do not support IO threads. This means that data path is handled by the main thread in QEMU and may slow down other work or may be slowed down by some other work. This also means that taking advantage of multi-queue is generally not possible today. Another thing is that data path is going through the device emulation code, which is not really optimized for performance. The fastest "frontend" device is virtio-net. But it's not optimized for heavy traffic either, because it expects such use-cases to be handled via some implementation of vhost (user, kernel, vdpa). In practice, we have virtio notifications and rcu lock/unlock on a per-packet basis and not very efficient accesses to the guest memory. Communication channels between backend and frontend devices do not allow passing more than one packet at a time as well. Some of these challenges can be avoided in the future by adding better batching into device emulation or by implementing vhost-af-xdp variant. There are also a few kernel limitations. AF_XDP sockets do not support any kinds of checksum or segmentation offloading. Buffers are limited to a page size (4K), i.e. MTU is limited. Multi-buffer support implementation for AF_XDP is in progress, but not ready yet. Also, transmission in all non-zero-copy modes is synchronous, i.e. done in a syscall. That doesn't allow high packet rates on virtual interfaces. However, keeping in mind all of these challenges, current implementation of the AF_XDP backend shows a decent performance while running on top of a physical NIC with zero-copy support. Test setup: 2 VMs running on 2 physical hosts connected via ConnectX6-Dx card. Network backend is configured to open the NIC directly in native mode. The driver supports zero-copy. NIC is configured to use 1 queue. Inside a VM - iperf3 for basic TCP performance testing and dpdk-testpmd for PPS testing. iperf3 result: TCP stream : 19.1 Gbps dpdk-testpmd (single queue, single CPU core, 64 B packets) results: Tx only : 3.4 Mpps Rx only : 2.0 Mpps L2 FWD Loopback : 1.5 Mpps In skb mode the same setup shows much lower performance, similar to the setup where pair of physical NICs is replaced with veth pair: iperf3 result: TCP stream : 9 Gbps dpdk-testpmd (single queue, single CPU core, 64 B packets) results: Tx only : 1.2 Mpps Rx only : 1.0 Mpps L2 FWD Loopback : 0.7 Mpps Results in skb mode or over the veth are close to results of a tap backend with vhost=on and disabled segmentation offloading bridged with a NIC. trace: add ability to do simple printf logging via systemtap The dtrace systemtap trace backend for QEMU is very powerful but it is also somewhat unfriendly to users who aren't familiar with systemtap, or who don't need its power right now. stap -e "....some strange script...." The 'log' backend for QEMU by comparison is very crude but incredibly easy to use: $ qemu -d trace:qio* ...some args... 23266@1547735759.137292:qio_channel_socket_new Socket new ioc=0x563a8a39d400 23266@1547735759.137305:qio_task_new Task new task=0x563a891d0570 source=0x563a8a39d400 func=0x563a86f1e6c0 opaque=0x563a89078000 23266@1547735759.137326:qio_task_thread_start Task thread start task=0x563a891d0570 worker=0x563a86f1ce50 opaque=0x563a891d9d90 23273@1547735759.137491:qio_task_thread_run Task thread run task=0x563a891d0570 23273@1547735759.137503:qio_channel_socket_connect_sync Socket connect sync ioc=0x563a8a39d400 addr=0x563a891d9d90 23273@1547735759.138108:qio_channel_socket_connect_fail Socket connect fail ioc=0x563a8a39d400 This commit introduces a way to do simple printf style logging of probe points using systemtap. In particular it creates another set of tapsets, one per emulator: /usr/share/systemtap/tapset/qemu-*-log.stp These pre-define probe functions which simply call printf() on their arguments. The printf() format string is taken from the normal trace-events files, with a little munging to the format specifiers to cope with systemtap's more restrictive syntax. With this you can now do $ stap -e 'probe qemu.system.x86_64.log.qio*{}' 22806@1547735341399856820 qio_channel_socket_new Socket new ioc=0x56135d1d7c00 22806@1547735341399862570 qio_task_new Task new task=0x56135cd66eb0 source=0x56135d1d7c00 func=0x56135af746c0 opaque=0x56135bf06400 22806@1547735341399865943 qio_task_thread_start Task thread start task=0x56135cd66eb0 worker=0x56135af72e50 opaque=0x56135c071d70 22806@1547735341399976816 qio_task_thread_run Task thread run task=0x56135cd66eb0 We go one step further though and introduce a 'qemu-trace-stap' tool to make this even easier $ qemu-trace-stap run qemu-system-x86_64 'qio*' 22806@1547735341399856820 qio_channel_socket_new Socket new ioc=0x56135d1d7c00 22806@1547735341399862570 qio_task_new Task new task=0x56135cd66eb0 source=0x56135d1d7c00 func=0x56135af746c0 opaque=0x56135bf06400 22806@1547735341399865943 qio_task_thread_start Task thread start task=0x56135cd66eb0 worker=0x56135af72e50 opaque=0x56135c071d70 22806@1547735341399976816 qio_task_thread_run Task thread run task=0x56135cd66eb0 This tool is clever in that it will automatically change the SYSTEMTAP_TAPSET env variable to point to the directory containing the right set of probes for the QEMU binary path you give it. This is useful if you have QEMU installed in /usr but are trying to test and trace a binary in /home/berrange/usr/qemu-git. In that case you'd do $ qemu-trace-stap run /home/berrange/usr/qemu-git/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 'qio*' And it'll make sure /home/berrange/usr/qemu-git/share/systemtap/tapset is used for the trace session The 'qemu-trace-stap' script takes a verbose arg so you can understand what it is running $ qemu-trace-stap run /home/berrange/usr/qemu-git/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 'qio*' Using tapset dir '/home/berrange/usr/qemu-git/share/systemtap/tapset' for binary '/home/berrange/usr/qemu-git/bin/qemu-system-x86_64' Compiling script 'probe qemu.system.x86_64.log.qio* {}' Running script, <Ctrl>-c to quit ...trace output... authz: add QAuthZList object type for an access control list Add a QAuthZList object type that implements the QAuthZ interface. This built-in implementation maintains a trivial access control list with a sequence of match rules and a final default policy. This replicates the functionality currently provided by the qemu_acl module. To create an instance of this object via the QMP monitor, the syntax used would be: { "execute": "object-add", "arguments": { "qom-type": "authz-list", "id": "authz0", "props": { "rules": [ { "match": "fred", "policy": "allow", "format": "exact" }, { "match": "bob", "policy": "allow", "format": "exact" }, { "match": "danb", "policy": "deny", "format": "glob" }, { "match": "dan*", "policy": "allow", "format": "exact" }, ], "policy": "deny" } } } This sets up an authorization rule that allows 'fred', 'bob' and anyone whose name starts with 'dan', except for 'danb'. Everyone unmatched is denied. It is not currently possible to create this via -object, since there is no syntax supported to specify non-scalar properties for objects. This is likely to be addressed by later support for using JSON with -object, or an equivalent approach. In any case the future "authz-listfile" object can be used from the CLI and is likely a better choice, as it allows the ACL to be refreshed automatically on change. blkio: add libblkio block driver libblkio (https://gitlab.com/libblkio/libblkio/) is a library for high-performance disk I/O. It currently supports io_uring, virtio-blk-vhost-user, and virtio-blk-vhost-vdpa with additional drivers under development. One of the reasons for developing libblkio is that other applications besides QEMU can use it. This will be particularly useful for virtio-blk-vhost-user which applications may wish to use for connecting to qemu-storage-daemon. libblkio also gives us an opportunity to develop in Rust behind a C API that is easy to consume from QEMU. This commit adds io_uring, nvme-io_uring, virtio-blk-vhost-user, and virtio-blk-vhost-vdpa BlockDrivers to QEMU using libblkio. It will be easy to add other libblkio drivers since they will share the majority of code. For now I/O buffers are copied through bounce buffers if the libblkio driver requires it. Later commits add an optimization for pre-registering guest RAM to avoid bounce buffers. The syntax is: --blockdev io_uring,node-name=drive0,filename=test.img,readonly=on|off,cache.direct=on|off --blockdev nvme-io_uring,node-name=drive0,filename=/dev/ng0n1,readonly=on|off,cache.direct=on --blockdev virtio-blk-vhost-vdpa,node-name=drive0,path=/dev/vdpa...,readonly=on|off,cache.direct=on --blockdev virtio-blk-vhost-user,node-name=drive0,path=vhost-user-blk.sock,readonly=on|off,cache.direct=on Signed-off-by: Stefan Hajnoczi <stefanha@redhat.com> Acked-by: Markus Armbruster <armbru@redhat.com> Reviewed-by: Stefano Garzarella <sgarzare@redhat.com> Message-id: 20221013185908.1297568-3-stefanha@redhat.com Signed-off-by: Stefan Hajnoczi <stefanha@redhat.com>

nbd/server: Allow MULTI_CONN for shared writable exports According to the NBD spec, a server that advertises NBD_FLAG_CAN_MULTI_CONN promises that multiple client connections will not see any cache inconsistencies: when properly separated by a single flush, actions performed by one client will be visible to another client, regardless of which client did the flush. We always satisfy these conditions in qemu - even when we support multiple clients, ALL clients go through a single point of reference into the block layer, with no local caching. The effect of one client is instantly visible to the next client. Even if our backend were a network device, we argue that any multi-path caching effects that would cause inconsistencies in back-to-back actions not seeing the effect of previous actions would be a bug in that backend, and not the fault of caching in qemu. As such, it is safe to unconditionally advertise CAN_MULTI_CONN for any qemu NBD server situation that supports parallel clients. Note, however, that we don't want to advertise CAN_MULTI_CONN when we know that a second client cannot connect (for historical reasons, qemu-nbd defaults to a single connection while nbd-server-add and QMP commands default to unlimited connections; but we already have existing means to let either style of NBD server creation alter those defaults). This is visible by no longer advertising MULTI_CONN for 'qemu-nbd -r' without -e, as in the iotest nbd-qemu-allocation. The harder part of this patch is setting up an iotest to demonstrate behavior of multiple NBD clients to a single server. It might be possible with parallel qemu-io processes, but I found it easier to do in python with the help of libnbd, and help from Nir and Vladimir in writing the test. block: Rename raw_bsd to raw-format.c Given that we have raw-win32.c and raw-posix.c, my initial guess at raw_bsd.c was that it was for dealing with raw files using code specific to the BSD operating system (beyond what raw-posix could do). Not so - this name was chosen back in commit e1c66c6 to distinguish that it was a BSD licensed file, in contrast to the then-existing raw.c with an unclear and potentially unusable license. But since it has been more than three years since the rewrite, it's time to pick a more useful name for this file to avoid this type of confusion to future contributors that don't know the backstory, as none of our other files are named solely by the license they use. In reality, this file deals with the raw format, which is useful with any number of protocols, while raw-{win32,posix} deal with the file protocol (and in turn, that protocol is not limited to use with the raw format). So rename raw_bsd to raw-format.c. We could have also used the shorter name raw.c, except that collides with the earlier use of that filename for a different license, and it's better to be safe than risk license pollution. The next patch will also rename raw-win32.c and raw-posix.c to further distinguish the difference in roles. It doesn't hurt that this gets rid of an underscore in the filename, thereby making tab-completion on 'ra<TAB>' easier (now I don't have to type the shift key, which slows things down :) Suggested-by: Daniel P. TX: ---- When client needs to send rdma_cm MAD message it construct it the same way as without this multiplexer, i.e. creates a umad packet but this time it writes its content to the socket instead of calling umad_send(). The server, upon receiving such a message fetch local_comm_id from it so a context for this session can be maintain and relay the message to UMAD layer by calling umad_send(). RX: ---- The server creates a worker thread to process incoming rdma_cm MAD messages. When an incoming message arrived (umad_recv()) the server, depending on the message type (attr_id) looks for target client by either searching in gid->fd table or in local_comm_id->fd table. With the extracted fd the server relays to incoming message to the client. Build and test automation
-------------------------
MAINTAINERS: Merge the Gitlab-CI section into the generic CI section The status of the gitlab-CI files is currently somewhat confusing, and it is often not quite clear whether a patch should go via my tree or via the testing tree of Alex. That situation has grown historically... Initially, I was the only one using the gitlab-CI, just for my private repository there. But in the course of time, the gitlab-CI switched to use the containers from tests/docker/ (which is not part of the gitlab-CI section in the MAINTAINERS file), and QEMU now even switched to gitlab.com completely for the repository and will soon use it as its gating CI, too, so it makes way more sense if the gitlab-ci.yml files belong to the people who are owning the qemu-project on gitlab.com and take care of the gitlab CI there. Thus let's merge the gitlab-ci section into the common "test and build automation" section. And while we're at it, I'm also removing the line with Fam there for now, since he was hardly active during the last years in this area anymore. If he ever gets more time for this part again in the future, we surely can add the line back again. I'm also removing the Patchew URL from this section now since Patchew's files are not tracked in the main QEMU repo and it is also not maintained by Alex, Philippe and myself. The maintainers of Patchew are still listed more accurately in the wiki on https://wiki.qemu.org/AdminContacts & https://wiki.qemu.org/Testing/CI/Patchew instead. Now to avoid that Alex is listed here in this section alone, Philippe and I agreed to help as backup maintainers here, too. And Willian volunteered to be an additional reviewer.
