The former waits for the test to complete while the latter does not. Testing this on d8 uncovered two issues which are also addressed in this CL: 1. async_test has a Promise that is rejected before it is handled. 2. Tests that use Promises don't work correctly on dart2js + d8, and are therefore skipped for now until the issue is resolved.
