This accepts the flag without a suffix because I'm fairly confident we can ship this support without breaking changes to the API. For a short period, the old flag is still supported so that Dart-Code + SDK don't need to be updated at the same time to avoid the support disappearing. I will remove the old flag in a few weeks (after a beta SDK branch and a stable Dart-Code release). Dart's flexible compiler technology lets you run Dart code in different ways, depending on your target platform and goals:

Dart Native: For programs targeting devices (mobile, desktop, server, and more), Dart Native includes both a Dart VM with JIT (just-in-time) compilation and an AOT (ahead-of-time) compiler for producing machine code.
