Getting the lock for the index, refreshing it and then writing it is a
pattern that happens more than once throughout the codebase, and isn't
trivial to get right. Factor out the refresh_and_write_cache function
from builtin/am.c to read-cache.c, so it can be re-used in other
places in a subsequent commit.
Note that we return different error codes for failing to refresh the
cache, and failing to write the index. The current caller only cares
about failing to write the index. However for other callers we're
going to convert in subsequent patches we will need this distinction.

We try to parse the "author" line out of a commit buffer. We handle the
case that split_ident_line() doesn't work, but we don't do any error
checking that we found an "author" line in the first place! This would
cause us to segfault on such a corrupt object.
Let's put in an explicit NULL check (we can just die(), which is what a
bogus split would do, too). As a bonus, this silences a warning when
compiling with gcc 9.2.1 using "-flto -O3", which claims that ident_len
may be uninitialized (it would only be if we had a NULL here).

The commit-graph file is now part of the "files that the runtime
may keep open file descriptors on, all of which would need to be
closed when done with the object store", and the file descriptor to
an existing commit-graph file now is closed before "gc" finalizes a
new instance to replace it.

In --interactive mode, "git am --resolved" will try to generate a patch
based on what is in the index, so that it can prompt "apply this
patch?". To do so it needs the tree of HEAD, which it tries to get with
get_oid_tree(). However, this doesn't yield a tree object; the "tree"
part just means "if you must disambiguate short oids, then prefer trees"
(and we do not need to disambiguate at all, since we are feeding a ref).
Instead, we must parse the oid as a commit (which should always be true
in a non-corrupt repository), and access its tree pointer manually.
This has been broken since the conversion to C in 7ff2683253
(builtin-am: implement -i/--interactive, 2015-08-04), but there was no
test coverage because of interactive-mode's insistence on having a tty.
That was lifted in the previous commit, so we can now add a test for
this case.
Note that before this patch, the test would result in a BUG() which
comes from 3506dc9445 (has_uncommitted_changes(): fall back to empty
tree, 2018-07-11). But before that, we'd have simply segfaulted (and in
fact this is the exact type of case the BUG() added there was trying to
catch!).

We have required that the stdin of "am --interactive" be a tty since
a1451104ac (git-am: interactive should fail gracefully., 2005-10-12).
However, this isn't strictly necessary, and makes the tool harder to
test (and is unlike all of our other --interactive commands).
The goal of that commit was to make sure that somebody does not do:
git am --interactive <mbox
and cause us to read commands from the mbox. But we can simply check
up front for this case and complain before entering the interactive
loop.
Technically this disallows:
git am --interactive </dev/null
where our lack of patches means we would never prompt for anything, and
so the old code would not notice our lack of tty (and now we'd die
early). But since such a command is totally pointless, it's no loss.

In the conversion of git-am from shell script to C, we switched to using
git_prompt(). Unlike the original shell command "read reply", this
doesn't read from stdin at all, but rather from /dev/tty.
In most cases this distinction wouldn't matter. We require (as the shell
script did) that stdin is a tty, so they would generally be the same
thing. But one important exception is our test suite: even with
test_terminal, we cannot test "am --interactive" because it insists on
reading from /dev/tty, not the pseudo-tty we've set up in the test
script.
Fixing this clears the way to adding tests in a future patch.

We'll never see a NULL returned from git_prompt(); if it can't produce
any input for us (e.g., because the terminal got EOF) then it will just
die().
So there's no need for us to handle NULL here. And even if there was, it
doesn't make sense to continue; on a true terminal hangup we'd just loop
infinitely trying to get input that will never come.

After a successful switch, if a merge, cherry-pick or revert is ongoing,
it is canceled. This behavior has been with us from the very early
beginning, soon after git-merge was created but never actually
documented [1]. It may be a good idea to be transparent and tell the
user if some operation is canceled.
I consider this a better way of telling the user than just adding a
sentence or two in git-checkout.txt, which will be mostly ignored
anyway.
PS. Originally I wanted to print more details like
warning: cancelling an in-progress merge from <SHA-1>
which may allow some level of undo if the user wants to. But that seems
a lot more work. Perhaps it can be improved later if people still want
that.

diff_opt_parse() is a heavy hammer to just set diff filter. But it's
the only way because of the diff_status_letters[] mapping. Add a new
API to set diff filter and use it in git-am. diff_opt_parse()'s only
remaining call site in revision.c will be gone soon and having it here
just because of git-am does not make sense.

The author.email, author.name, committer.email and committer.name
settings are analogous to the GIT_AUTHOR_* and GIT_COMMITTER_*
environment variables, but for the git config system. This allows them
to be set separately for each repository.
Git supports setting different authorship and committer
information with environment variables. However, environment variables
are set in the shell, so if different authorship and committer
information is needed for different repositories an external tool is
required.
This adds support to git config for author.email, author.name,
committer.email and committer.name settings so this information
can be set per repository.
Also, it generalizes the fmt_ident function so it can handle author vs
committer identification.

The post-rewrite hook is supposed to be invoked for each rewritten
commit. The fact that a commit was selected and processed by the rebase
operation (even though when we hit an error a user said it had no more
useful changes), suggests we should write an entry for it. In
particular, let's treat it as an empty commit trivially squashed into
its parent.
This brings the rebase--am and rebase--merge backends in sync with the
behavior of the interactive rebase backend.

If there are errors in a user edited author-script there was no
indication of what was wrong. This commit adds some specific error messages
depending on the problem. It also relaxes the requirement that the
variables appear in a specific order in the file to match the behavior
of 'rebase --interactive'.

The reason rerere(), rerere_forget() and rerere_remaining() take a
struct repository instead of struct index_state is not obvious from
the patch:
Deep in update_paths() and find_conflict(), hold_locked_index() and
read_index() are called. These functions assumes the index path at
$GIT_DIR/index which is not always true when you take an arbitrary
index state. Taking a repository will allow us to point to the right
index path later when we replace them with repo_ versions.

Refreshing the index is usually very fast, but it can still take a
long time sometimes. Cold cache is one. Or copying a repo to a new
place (*). It's good to show something to let the user know "git
status" is not hanging, it's just busy doing something.
(*) In this case, all stat info in the index becomes invalid and git
falls back to rehashing all file content to see if there's any
difference between updating stat info in the index. This is quite
expensive. Even with a repo as small as git.git, it takes 3
seconds.

Recent addition of "directory rename" heuristics to the
merge-recursive backend makes the command susceptible to false
positives and false negatives. In the context of "git am -3",
which does not know about surrounding unmodified paths and thus
cannot inform the merge machinery about the full trees involved,
this risk is particularly severe. As such, the heuristic is
disabled for "git am -3" to keep the machinery "more stupid but
predictable".

Let's say you have the following three trees, where Base is from one commit
behind either master or branch:
Base : bar_v1, foo/{file1, file2, file3}
branch: bar_v2, foo/{file1, file2}, goo/file3
master: bar_v3, foo/{file1, file2, file3}
Using git-am (or am-based rebase) to apply the changes from branch onto
master results in the following tree:
Result: bar_merged, goo/{file1, file2, file3}
This is not what users want; they did not rename foo/ -> goo/, they only
renamed one file within that directory. The reason this happens is am
constructs fake trees (via build_fake_ancestor()) of the following form:
Base_bfa : bar_v1, foo/file3
branch_bfa: bar_v2, goo/file3
Combining these two trees with master's tree:
master: bar_v3, foo/{file1, file2, file3},
You can see that merge_recursive_generic() would see branch_bfa as renaming
foo/ -> goo/, and master as just adding both foo/file1 and foo/file2. As
such, it ends up with goo/{file1, file2, file3}
The core problem is that am does not have access to the original trees; it
can only construct trees using the blobs involved in the patch. As such,
it is not safe to perform directory rename detection within am -3.

Add best-effort support for patches sent using format=flowed (RFC 3676).
Remove leading spaces ("unstuff"), remove soft line breaks (indicated
by space + newline), but leave the signature separator (dash dash space
newline) alone.
Warn in git am when encountering a format=flowed patch, because any
trailing spaces would most probably be lost, as the sending MUA is
encouraged to remove them when preparing the email.
Provide a test patch formatted by Mozilla Thunderbird 60 using its
default configuration. It reuses the contents of the file mailinfo.c
before and after this patch.

Using the more restrictive oideq() should, in the long run,
give the compiler more opportunities to optimize these
callsites. For now, this conversion should be a complete
noop with respect to the generated code.
The result is also perhaps a little more readable, as it
avoids the "zero is equal" idiom. Since it's so prevalent in
C, I think seasoned programmers tend not to even notice it
anymore, but it can sometimes make for awkward double
negations (e.g., we can drop a few !!oidcmp() instances
here).
This patch was generated almost entirely by the included
coccinelle patch. This mechanical conversion should be
completely safe, because we check explicitly for cases where
oidcmp() is compared to 0, which is what oideq() is doing
under the hood. Note that we don't have to catch "!oidcmp()"
separately; coccinelle's standard isomorphisms make sure the
two are treated equivalently.
I say "almost" because I did hand-edit the coccinelle output
to fix up a few style violations (it mostly keeps the
original formatting, but sometimes unwraps long lines).

We're moving away from the_index in this code. "struct index_state *"
could be added to struct apply_state. But let's aim long term and put
struct repository here instead so that we could even avoid more global
states in the future. The index will be available via
apply_state->repo->index.

index_has_changes(): avoid assuming operating on the_index
read-cache.c: move index_has_changes() from merge.c
`git merge-recursive` does a three-way merge between user-specified trees
base, head, and remote. Since the user is allowed to specify head, we can
not necesarily assume that head == HEAD.
Modify index_has_changes() to take an extra argument specifying the tree
to compare against. If NULL, it will compare to HEAD. We then use this
from merge-recursive to make sure we compare to the user-specified head.

Modify index_has_changes() to take a struct istate* instead of just
operating on the_index. This is only a partial conversion, though,
because we call do_diff_cache() which implicitly assumes work is to be
done on the_index. Ongoing work is being done elsewhere to do the
remainder of the conversion, and thus is not duplicated here. Instead,
a simple check is put in place until that work is complete.

specific about which repository to handle. This is a small mechanical
change; it doesn't change the implementation to handle repositories
other than the_repository yet.
As with the previous commits, use a macro to catch callers passing a
repository other than the_repository at compile time.

The only benefit from this move (apart from cleaner code) is that
advice.amWorkDir should now show up in `git help --config`. There
should be no regression since advice config is always read by the
git_default_config().
While at there, use advise() like other code. We now get "hint: "
prefix and the output is stderr instead of stdout (which is also the
reason for the test update because stderr is checked in a following
test and the extra advice can fail it).

passed in by OPT_SET_INT_F() and it is a bit more compact than full
struct initialization.

In d8193743e0 (usage.c: add BUG() function, 2017-05-12), a new macro
was introduced to use for reporting bugs instead of die(). It was then
subsequently used to convert one single caller in 588a538ae5
(setup_git_env: convert die("BUG") to BUG(), 2017-05-12).
The cover letter of the patch series containing this patch
(cf 20170513032414.mfrwabt4hovujde2@sigill.intra.peff.net) is not
terribly clear why only one call site was converted, or what the plan
is for other, similar calls to die() to report bugs.
Let's just convert all remaining ones in one fell swoop.
This trick was performed by this invocation:

The new "--show-current-patch" option gives an end-user facing way
to get the diff being applied when "git rebase" (and "git am")
stops with a conflict.

The new command `git rebase --show-current-patch` is useful for seeing
the commit related to the current rebase state. Some however may find
the "git show" command behind it too limiting. You may want to
increase context lines, do a diff that ignores whitespaces...
For these advanced use cases, the user can execute any command they
want with the new pseudo ref REBASE_HEAD.
This also helps show where the stopped commit is from, which is hard
to see from the previous patch which implements --show-current-patch.

It is useful to see the full patch while resolving conflicts in a
rebase. The only way to do it now is
less .git/rebase-*/patch
which could turn out to be a lot longer to type if you are in a
linked worktree, or not at top-dir. On top of that, an ordinary user
should not need to peek into .git directory. The new option is
provided to examine the patch.

Pointing the user to $GIT_DIR/rebase-apply may encourage them to mess
around in there, which is not a good thing. With this, the user does
not have to keep the path around somewhere (because after a couple of
commands, the path may be out of scrollback buffer) when they need to
look at the patch.

requests that the function ignore it completely. In fact, in
all of history there was only one such caller, and it went
away in 7f51f8bc2b (alias: use run_command api to execute
aliases, 2011-01-07).

dirty, if the merged tree happened to be the same as the current
HEAD, which has been fixed.

We have two users of `struct apply_state` and the related functionality
in apply.c. Each user sets up its `apply_state` by handing over a
pointer to its static `lock_file`. (Before 076aa2cbd (tempfile:
auto-allocate tempfiles on heap, 2017-09-05), we could never free
lockfiles, so making them static was a reasonable approach.)
Other than that, they never directly access their `lock_file`s, which
are instead handled by the functionality in apply.c.
To make life easier for the caller and to make it less tempting for a
future caller to mess with the lock, make apply.c fully responsible for
setting up the `lock_file`. As mentioned above, it is now safe to free a
`lock_file`, so we can make the `struct apply_state` contain an actual
`struct lock_file` instead of a pointer to one.
The user in builtin/apply.c is rather simple. For builtin/am.c, we might
worry that the lock state is actually meant to be inherited across
calls. But the lock is only taken as `apply_all_patches()` executes, and
code inspection shows that it will always be released.
Alternatively, we can observe that the lock itself is never queried
directly. When we decide whether we should lock, we check a related
variable `newfd`. That variable is not inherited, so from the point of
view of apply.c, the state machine really is reset with each call to
`init_apply_state()`. (It would be a bug if `newfd` and the lock status
were not in sync. The duplication of information in `newfd` and the lock
will be addressed in the next patch.)

There is no longer any need to allocate and leak a `struct lock_file`.
The previous patch addressed an instance where we needed a minor tweak
alongside the trivial changes.
Deal with the remaining instances where we allocate and leak a struct
within a single function. Change them to have the `struct lock_file` on
the stack instead.
These instances were identified by running `git grep "^\s*struct
lock_file\s*\*"`.

If the user provides "-h" on the command line, then our
parse_options() invocation will show a usage message and
quit. But if "-h" is the only argument, the git wrapper
behaves specially: it ignores our RUN_SETUP flag and calls
cmd_am() without having done repository setup at all. This
is due to 99caeed05 (Let 'git <command> -h' show usage
without a git dir, 2009-11-09).
Before cmd_am() calls parse_options(), though, it runs a few
other setup functions. One of these is am_state_init(),
which uses git_pathdup() to set up the default rebase-apply
path. But calling git_pathdup() when we haven't done
repository setup will fall back to using ".git". That's
mostly harmless (since we won't use the value anyway), but
is forbidden since b1ef400eec ("setup_git_env: avoid blind
fall-back to ".git"", 2016-10-20), and we now BUG().
We can't easily move that setup to after the parse_options()
call; the point is to set up defaults that are overwritten
by the option parsing. Instead, we'll detect the "-h" case
early and show the usage then. This matches the behavior of
other builtins which have a similar setup-ordering issue
(e.g., git-branch).

Git sometimes gives an advice in a rhetorical question that does
not require an answer, which can confuse new users and non native
speakers. Attempt to rephrase them.

- provides error details
- explains error on reading, or writing, or whatever operation
- has l10n support
- prints file name in the error
Some of these are missing in the places that are replaced with xfopen(),
which is a clear win. In some other places, it's just less code (not as
clearly a win as the previous case but still is).
The only slight regresssion is in remote-testsvn, where we don't report
the file class (marks files) in the error messages anymore. But since
this is a _test_ svn remote transport, I'm not too concerned.

A few codepaths in "checkout" and "am" working on an unborn branch
tried to access an uninitialized piece of memory.

Some platforms have ulong that is smaller than time_t, and our
historical use of ulong for timestamp would mean they cannot
represent some timestamp that the platform allows. Invent a
separate and dedicated timestamp_t (so that we can distingiuish
timestamps and a vanilla ulongs, which along is already a good
move), and then declare uintmax_t is the type to be used as the
timestamp_t.

The codepath in "git am" that is used when running "git rebase"
leaked memory held for the log message of the commits being rebased.

There has been a bug report by a corporate user that stated that
"spelling mistake of stash followed by a yes prints character 'y'
infinite times."
This analysis was false. When the spelling of a command contains
errors, the git program tries to help the user by providing candidates
which are close to the unexisting command. E.g Git prints the
following:
git: 'stahs' is not a git command. See 'git --help'.
Did you mean this?
stash
and then exits.
The problem with this hint is that it is not formally indicated as an
hint and the user is in fact encouraged to reply to the question,
whereas the Git command is already finished.
The user was unlucky enough that it was the command he was looking
for, and replied "yes" on the command line, effectively launching the
`yes` program.
The initial error is that the Git programs, when launched in
command-line mode (without interaction) must not ask questions,
because these questions would normally require a user input as a reply
that they won't handle indeed. That's a source of confusion on UX
level.
To improve the general usability of the Git suite, the following rule
was applied:
if the sentence
* appears in a non-interactive session
* is printed last before exit
* is a question addressing the user ("you")
the sentence is turned into affirmative and proposes the option.
The basic rewording of the question sentences has been extended to
other spots found in the source.

definition. Update builtin/checkout.c manually as well, since it uses a

Convert lookup_commit, lookup_commit_or_die,
lookup_commit_reference, and lookup_commit_reference_gently to take
struct object_id arguments.
Introduce a temporary in parse_object buffer in order to convert this
function. This is required since in order to convert parse_object and
parse_object_buffer, lookup_commit_reference_gently and
lookup_commit_or_die would need to be converted. Not introducing a
temporary would therefore require that lookup_commit_or_die take a
struct object_id *, but lookup_commit would take unsigned char *,
leaving a confusing and hard-to-use interface.
parse_object_buffer will lose this temporary in a later patch.

If resolve_refdup() fails it returns NULL and possibly leaves its hash
output parameter untouched. Make sure to use it only if the function
succeeded, in order to avoid accessing uninitialized memory.

The local ident_split variable is often mentioned three
times per line when dealing with its begin/end pointer
pairs. Let's use a shorter name which lets us get rid of
some long lines. Since this is a short self-contained
function, readability doesn't suffer.

After we call split_ident_line(), we have several begin/end
pairs for various parts of the ident. We then copy each into
a strbuf to create a single string, and then detach that
string. We can instead skip the strbuf entirely and just
duplicate the strings directly.
This is shorter, and it makes it more obvious that we are
not leaking the strbuf (we were not before, because every
code path either died or hit a strbuf_detach).

Calling logmsg_reencode() may allocate a buffer for the
commit message (because we need to load it from disk, or
because it needs re-encoded). We must "unuse" it afterwards

Git's source code assumes that unsigned long is at least as precise as
time_t. Which is incorrect, and causes a lot of problems, in particular
where unsigned long is only 32-bit (notably on Windows, even in 64-bit
versions).
So let's just use a more appropriate data type instead. In preparation
for this, we introduce the new `timestamp_t` data type.
By necessity, this is a very, very large patch, as it has to replace all
timestamps' data type in one go.
As we will use a data type that is not necessarily identical to `time_t`,
we need to be very careful to use `time_t` whenever we interact with the
system functions, and `timestamp_t` everywhere else.

While handy, "git_path()" is a dangerous function to use as a
callsite that uses it safely one day can be broken by changes
to other code that calls it. Reduction of its use continues.

`strtoul`) where appropriate, so that we can later easily switch to,
say, use `strtoull()` instead.

The only caller of this function passes in a static buffer
returned from git_path(). This looks dangerous at first
glance, but turns out to be OK because the first thing we do
is xstrdup() the result.
Let's turn this into a git_pathdup(). That's slightly more
efficient (no extra copy), and makes it easier to audit for
dangerous git_path() invocations.
Since there's only a single caller, let's just set this
default path inside the init function. That makes the memory
ownership clear.
