Replace the remaining calls of run_command_v_opt() with run_command()
calls and explict struct child_process variables. This is more verbose,
but not by much overall. The code becomes more flexible, e.g. it's easy
to extend to conditionally add a new argument.
Then remove the now unused function and its own flag names, simplifying
the run-command API.

Build the string array av during initialization, without any magic
numbers or heap allocations. Not duplicating the result of oid_to_hex()
is safe because run_command_v_opt() duplicates all arguments already.
(It would even be safe if it didn't, but that's a different story.)

As reported in [1] the "UNUSED(var)" macro introduced in
2174b8c75d (Merge branch 'jk/unused-annotation' into next,
2022-08-24) breaks coccinelle's parsing of our sources in files where
it occurs.
Let's instead partially go with the approach suggested in [2] of
making this not take an argument. As noted in [1] "coccinelle" will
ignore such tokens in argument lists that it doesn't know about, and
it's less of a surprise to syntax highlighters.
This undoes the "help us notice when a parameter marked as unused is
actually use" part of 9b24034754 (git-compat-util: add UNUSED macro,
2022-08-19), a subsequent commit will further tweak the macro to
implement a replacement for that functionality.

The callback passed to git_config() must conform to a particular
interface. But most callbacks don't actually look at the extra "void
*data" parameter. Let's mark the unused parameters to make
-Wunused-parameter happy.
Note there's one unusual case here in get_remote_default() where we
actually ignore the "value" parameter. That's because it's only checking
whether the option is found at all, and not parsing its value.

Move the declaration of the date.c functions from cache.h, and adjust
the relevant users to include the new date.h header.
The show_ident_date() function belonged in pretty.h (it's defined in
pretty.c), its two users outside of pretty.c didn't strictly need to
include pretty.h, as they get it indirectly, but let's add it to them
anyway.
Similarly, the change to "builtin/{fast-import,show-branch,tag}.c"
isn't needed as far as the compiler is concerned, but since they all
use the "DATE_MODE()" macro we now define in date.h, let's have them
include it.
We could simply include this new header in "cache.h", but as this
change shows these functions weren't common enough to warrant
including in it in the first place. By moving them out of cache.h
changes to this API will no longer cause a (mostly) full re-build of
the project when "make" is run.

This option helps to record specific empty patches in the middle
of an am session, which does create empty commits only when:
1. the index has not changed
2. lacking a branch
When the index has changed, "--allow-empty" will create a non-empty
commit like passing "--continue" or "--resolved".

Since that the command 'git-format-patch' can include patches of
commits that emit no changes, the 'git-am' command should also
support an option, named as '--empty', to specify how to handle
those empty patches. In this commit, we have implemented three
valid options ('stop', 'drop' and 'keep').

Traditionally, unpack_trees_options->reset was used to signal that it
was okay to delete any untracked files in the way. This was used by
`git read-tree --reset`, but then started appearing in other places as
well. However, many of the other uses should not be deleting untracked
files in the way. Change this value to an enum so that a value of 1
(i.e. "true") can be split into two:
UNPACK_RESET_PROTECT_UNTRACKED,
UNPACK_RESET_OVERWRITE_UNTRACKED
In order to catch accidental misuses (i.e. where folks call it the way
they traditionally used to), define the special enum value of
UNPACK_RESET_INVALID = 1
which will trigger a BUG().
Modify existing callers so that
read-tree --reset
reset --hard
checkout --force
continue using the UNPACK_RESET_OVERWRITE_UNTRACKED logic, while other
callers, including
am
checkout without --force
stash (though currently dead code; reset always had a value of 0)
numerous callers from rebase/sequencer to reset_head()
will use the new UNPACK_RESET_PROTECT_UNTRACKED value.
Also, note that it has been reported that 'git checkout <treeish>
<pathspec>' currently also allows overwriting untracked files[1]. That
case should also be fixed, but it does not use unpack_trees() and thus
is outside the scope of the current changes.

Change several commands to remove ignored files by default when they are
in the way. Since some commands (checkout, merge) take a
--no-overwrite-ignore option to allow the user to configure this, and it
may make sense to add that option to more commands (and in the case of
merge, actually plumb that configuration option through to more of the
backends than just the fast-forwarding special case), add little
comments about where such flags would be used.
Incidentally, this fixes a test failure in t7112.

Currently, every caller of unpack_trees() that wants to ensure ignored
files are overwritten by default needs to:
* allocate unpack_trees_options.dir
* flip the DIR_SHOW_IGNORED flag in unpack_trees_options.dir->flags
* call setup_standard_excludes
AND then after the call to unpack_trees() needs to
* call dir_clear()
* deallocate unpack_trees_options.dir
That's a fair amount of boilerplate, and every caller uses identical
code. Make this easier by instead introducing a new boolean value where
the default value (0) does what we want so that new callers of
unpack_trees() automatically get the appropriate behavior. And move all
the handling of unpack_trees_options.dir into unpack_trees() itself.
While preserve_ignored = 0 is the behavior we feel is the appropriate
default, we defer fixing commands to use the appropriate default until a
later commit. So, this commit introduces several locations where we
manually set preserve_ignored=1. This makes it clear where code paths
were previously preserving ignored files when they should not have been;
a future commit will flip these to instead use a value of 0 to get the
behavior we want.

Move the find_hook() function from run-command.c to a new hook.c
library. This change establishes a stub library that's pretty
pointless right now, but will see much wider use with Emily Shaffer's
upcoming "configuration-based hooks" series.
Eventually all the hook related code will live in hook.[ch]. Let's
start that process by moving the simple find_hook() function over
as-is.

When "git am --abort" fails to abort correctly, it still exited
with exit status of 0, which has been corrected.

The run-command API has been updated so that the callers can easily
ask the file descriptors open for packfiles to be closed immediately
before spawning commands that may trigger auto-gc.

Before spawning the auto maintenance, we need to make sure that we
release all open file handles to all the `.pack` files (and MIDX files
and commit-graph files and...) so that the maintenance process has the
freedom to delete those files.
So far, we did this manually every time before calling
`run_auto_maintenance()`. With the new `close_object_store` flag, we can
do that implicitly in that function, which is more robust because future
callers won't be able to forget to close the object store.
Note: this changes behavior slightly, as we previously _always_ closed
the object store, but now we only close the object store when actually
running the auto maintenance. In practice, this should not matter (if
anything, it might speed up operations where auto maintenance is
disabled).

In c4a09cc9cc (Merge branch 'hw/advise-ng', 2020-03-25), a new API for
accessing advice variables was introduced and deprecated `advice_config`
in favor of a new array, `advice_setting`.
This patch ports all but two uses which read the status of the global
`advice_` variables over to the new `advice_enabled` API. We'll deal
with advice_add_embedded_repo and advice_graft_file_deprecated
separately.

For the --committer-date-is-author-date option of git-am and git-rebase,
we format the committer ident, then re-parse it to find the name and
email, and then feed those back to fmt_ident().
We can simplify this by handling it all at the time of the fmt_ident()
call. We pass in the appropriate getenv() results, and if they're not
present, then our WANT_COMMITTER_IDENT flag tells fmt_ident() to fill in
the appropriate value from the config. Which is exactly what
git_committer_ident() was doing under the hood.

Commit e8cbe2118a (am: stop exporting GIT_COMMITTER_DATE, 2020-08-17)
rewrote the code for setting the committer date to use fmt_ident(),
rather than setting an environment variable and letting commit_tree()
handle it. But it introduced two bugs:
- we use the author email string instead of the committer email
- when parsing the committer ident, we used the wrong variable to
compute the length of the email, resulting in it always being a
zero-length string
This commit fixes both, which causes our test of this option via the
rebase "apply" backend to now succeed.

Ted reported an old typo in the git-commit.txt and merge-options.txt.
Namely, the phrase "Signed-off-by line" was used without either a
definite nor indefinite article.
Upon examination, it seems that the documentation (including items in
Documentation/, but also option help strings) have been quite
inconsistent on usage when referring to `Signed-off-by`.
First, very few places used a definite or indefinite article with the
phrase "Signed-off-by line", but that was the initial typo that led
to this investigation. So, normalize using either an indefinite or
definite article consistently.
The original phrasing, in Commit 3f971fc425 (Documentation updates,
2005-08-14), is "Add Signed-off-by line". Commit 6f855371a5 (Add
--signoff, --check, and long option-names. 2005-12-09) switched to
using "Add `Signed-off-by:` line", but didn't normalize the former
commit to match. Later commits seem to have cut and pasted from one
or the other, which is likely how the usage became so inconsistent.
Junio stated on the git mailing list in
<xmqqy2k1dfoh.fsf@gitster.c.googlers.com> a preference to leave off
the colon. Thus, prefer `Signed-off-by` (with backticks) for the
documentation files and Signed-off-by (without backticks) for option
help strings.
Additionally, Junio argued that "trailer" is now the standard term to
refer to `Signed-off-by`, saying that "becomes plenty clear that we
are not talking about any random line in the log message". As such,
prefer "trailer" over "line" anywhere the former word fits.
However, leave alone those few places in documentation that use
Signed-off-by to refer to the process (rather than the specific
trailer), or in places where mail headers are generally discussed in
comparison with Signed-off-by.

In the spirit of 517fe807d6 (assert NOARG/NONEG behavior of
parse-options callbacks, 2018-11-05), let's cover some parse-options
callbacks which expect to be used with PARSE_OPT_NONEG but don't
explicitly assert that this is the case. These callbacks are all used
correctly in the current code, but this will help document their
expectations and future-proof the code.
As a bonus, it also silences -Wunused-parameters (these were added since
the initial sweep of 517fe807d6, and we can't yet turn on
-Wunused-parameters to remind people because it has too many existing
false positives).

A "git gc"'s big brother has been introduced to take care of more
repository maintenance tasks, not limited to the object database
cleaning.

The run_auto_gc() method is used in several places to trigger a check
for repo maintenance after some Git commands, such as 'git commit' or
'git fetch'.
To allow for extra customization of this maintenance activity, replace
the 'git gc --auto [--quiet]' call with one to 'git maintenance run
--auto [--quiet]'. As we extend the maintenance builtin with other
steps, users will be able to select different maintenance activities.
Rename run_auto_gc() to run_auto_maintenance() to be clearer what is
happening on this call, and to expose all callers in the current diff.
Rewrite the method to use a struct child_process to simplify the calls
slightly.
Since 'git fetch' already allows disabling the 'git gc --auto'
subprocess, add an equivalent option with a different name to be more
descriptive of the new behavior: '--[no-]maintenance'. Update the
documentation to include these options at the same time.

The implementation of --committer-date-is-author-date exports
GIT_COMMITTER_DATE to override the default committer date but does not
reset GIT_COMMITTER_DATE in the environment after creating the commit

to add the same functionality to the sequencer and do not want to have
GIT_COMMITTER_DATE set when running hooks or exec commands so lets
update commit_tree_extended() to take an explicit committer so we
override the default date without setting GIT_COMMITTER_DATE in the
environment.

The "argc" and "argv" names made sense when the struct was argv_array,
but now they're just confusing. Let's rename them to "nr" (which we use
for counts elsewhere) and "v" (which is rather terse, but reads well
when combined with typical variable names like "args.v").
Note that we have to update all of the callers immediately. Playing
tricks with the preprocessor is hard here, because we wouldn't want to
rewrite unrelated tokens.

We eventually want to drop the argv_array name and just use strvec
consistently. There's no particular reason we have to do it all at once,
or care about interactions between converted and unconverted bits.
Because of our preprocessor compat layer, the names are interchangeable
to the compiler (so even a definition and declaration using different
names is OK).
This patch converts all of the files in builtin/ to keep the diff to a
manageable size.
The conversion was done purely mechanically with:

xargs perl -i -pe '
s/ARGV_ARRAY/STRVEC/g;
s/argv_array/strvec/g;

and then selectively staging files with "git add builtin/". We'll deal
with any indentation/style fallouts separately.

We want to eventually drop the use of the "argv_array" name in favor of
"strvec." Unlike most other uses of the name, this one is embedded in a
function name, so the definition and all of the callers need to be
updated at the same time.
We don't technically need to update the parameter types here (our
preprocessor compat macros make the two names interchangeable), but
let's do so to keep the site consistent for now.

When "git am --show-current-patch" was added in commit 984913a210 ("am:
add --show-current-patch", 2018-02-12), "git am" started recommending it
as a replacement for .git/rebase-merge/patch. Unfortunately the suggestion
is somewhat misguided; for example, the output of "git am --show-current-patch"
cannot be passed to "git apply" if it is encoded as quoted-printable
or base64. Add a new mode to "git am --show-current-patch" in order to
straighten the suggestion.

add --show-current-patch", 2018-02-12), "git am" started recommending it
as a replacement for .git/rebase-merge/patch. Unfortunately the suggestion
is somewhat misguided; for example, the output "git am --show-current-patch"
cannot be passed to "git apply" if it is encoded as quoted-printable or
base64. To simplify worktree operations and to avoid that users poke into
.git, it would be better if "git am" also provided a mode that copies
.git/rebase-merge/patch to stdout.
One possibility could be to have completely separate options, introducing
for example --show-current-message (for .git/rebase-apply/NNNN)
and --show-current-diff (for .git/rebase-apply/patch), while possibly
deprecating --show-current-patch.
That would even remove the need for the first two patches in the series.
However, the long common prefix would have prevented using an abbreviated
option such as "--show". Therefore, I chose instead to add a string
argument to --show-current-patch. The new argument is optional, so that
"git am --show-current-patch"'s behavior remains backwards-compatible.
The next choice to make is how to handle multiple --show-current-patch
options. Right now, something like "git am --abort --show-current-patch"
is rejected, and the previous suggestion would likewise have naturally
rejected a command line like
git am --show-current-message --show-current-diff
Therefore, I decided to also reject for example
git am --show-current-patch=diff --show-current-patch=raw
In other words the whole of --show-current-patch=xxx (including the
optional argument) is treated as the command mode. I found this to be
more consistent and intuitive, even though it differs from the usual
"last one wins" semantics of the git command line.
Add the code to parse submodes based on the above design, where for now
"raw" is the only valid submode. "raw" prints the full e-mail message
just like "git am --show-current-patch".

Getting the lock for the index, refreshing it and then writing it is a
pattern that happens more than once throughout the codebase, and isn't
trivial to get right. Factor out the refresh_and_write_cache function
from builtin/am.c to read-cache.c, so it can be re-used in other
places in a subsequent commit.
Note that we return different error codes for failing to refresh the
cache, and failing to write the index. The current caller only cares
about failing to write the index. However for other callers we're
going to convert in subsequent patches we will need this distinction.

We try to parse the "author" line out of a commit buffer. We handle the
case that split_ident_line() doesn't work, but we don't do any error
checking that we found an "author" line in the first place! This would
cause us to segfault on such a corrupt object.
Let's put in an explicit NULL check (we can just die(), which is what a
bogus split would do, too). As a bonus, this silences a warning when
compiling with gcc 9.2.1 using "-flto -O3", which claims that ident_len
may be uninitialized (it would only be if we had a NULL here).

The commit-graph file is now part of the "files that the runtime
may keep open file descriptors on, all of which would need to be
closed when done with the object store", and the file descriptor to
an existing commit-graph file now is closed before "gc" finalizes a
new instance to replace it.

In --interactive mode, "git am --resolved" will try to generate a patch
based on what is in the index, so that it can prompt "apply this
patch?". To do so it needs the tree of HEAD, which it tries to get with
get_oid_tree(). However, this doesn't yield a tree object; the "tree"
part just means "if you must disambiguate short oids, then prefer trees"
(and we do not need to disambiguate at all, since we are feeding a ref).
Instead, we must parse the oid as a commit (which should always be true
in a non-corrupt repository), and access its tree pointer manually.
This has been broken since the conversion to C in 7ff2683253
(builtin-am: implement -i/--interactive, 2015-08-04), but there was no
test coverage because of interactive-mode's insistence on having a tty.
That was lifted in the previous commit, so we can now add a test for
this case.
Note that before this patch, the test would result in a BUG() which
comes from 3506dc9445 (has_uncommitted_changes(): fall back to empty
tree, 2018-07-11). But before that, we'd have simply segfaulted (and in
fact this is the exact type of case the BUG() added there was trying to
catch!).

We have required that the stdin of "am --interactive" be a tty since
a1451104ac (git-am: interactive should fail gracefully., 2005-10-12).
However, this isn't strictly necessary, and makes the tool harder to
test (and is unlike all of our other --interactive commands).
The goal of that commit was to make sure that somebody does not do:
git am --interactive <mbox
and cause us to read commands from the mbox. But we can simply check
up front for this case and complain before entering the interactive
loop.
Technically this disallows:
git am --interactive </dev/null
where our lack of patches means we would never prompt for anything, and
so the old code would not notice our lack of tty (and now we'd die
early). But since such a command is totally pointless, it's no loss.

In the conversion of git-am from shell script to C, we switched to using
git_prompt(). Unlike the original shell command "read reply", this
doesn't read from stdin at all, but rather from /dev/tty.
In most cases this distinction wouldn't matter. We require (as the shell
script did) that stdin is a tty, so they would generally be the same
thing. But one important exception is our test suite: even with
test_terminal, we cannot test "am --interactive" because it insists on
reading from /dev/tty, not the pseudo-tty we've set up in the test
script.
Fixing this clears the way to adding tests in a future patch.

We'll never see a NULL returned from git_prompt(); if it can't produce
any input for us (e.g., because the terminal got EOF) then it will just
die().
So there's no need for us to handle NULL here. And even if there was, it
doesn't make sense to continue; on a true terminal hangup we'd just loop
infinitely trying to get input that will never come.

After a successful switch, if a merge, cherry-pick or revert is ongoing,
it is canceled. This behavior has been with us from the very early
beginning, soon after git-merge was created but never actually
documented [1]. It may be a good idea to be transparent and tell the
user if some operation is canceled.
I consider this a better way of telling the user than just adding a
sentence or two in git-checkout.txt, which will be mostly ignored
anyway.
PS. Originally I wanted to print more details like
warning: cancelling an in-progress merge from <SHA-1>
which may allow some level of undo if the user wants to. But that seems
a lot more work. Perhaps it can be improved later if people still want
that.
[1] ... and I will try not to argue whether it is a sensible behavior.

diff_opt_parse() is a heavy hammer to just set diff filter. But it's
the only way because of the diff_status_letters[] mapping. Add a new
API to set diff filter and use it in git-am. diff_opt_parse()'s only
remaining call site in revision.c will be gone soon and having it here
just because of git-am does not make sense.

The author.email, author.name, committer.email and committer.name
settings are analogous to the GIT_AUTHOR_* and GIT_COMMITTER_*
environment variables, but for the git config system. This allows them
to be set separately for each repository.
Git supports setting different authorship and committer
information with environment variables. However, environment variables
are set in the shell, so if different authorship and committer
information is needed for different repositories an external tool is
required.
This adds support to git config for author.email, author.name,
committer.email and committer.name settings so this information
can be set per repository.
Also, it generalizes the fmt_ident function so it can handle author vs
committer identification.

read_index() shares the same problem as hold_locked_index(): it
assumes $GIT_DIR/index. Move all call sites to repo_read_index()
instead. read_index_preload() and read_index_unmerged() are also
killed as a consequence.

The post-rewrite hook is supposed to be invoked for each rewritten
commit. The fact that a commit was selected and processed by the rebase
operation (even though when we hit an error a user said it had no more
useful changes), suggests we should write an entry for it. In
particular, let's treat it as an empty commit trivially squashed into
its parent.
This brings the rebase--am and rebase--merge backends in sync with the
behavior of the interactive rebase backend.

If there are errors in a user edited author-script there was no
indication of what was wrong. This commit adds some specific error messages
depending on the problem. It also relaxes the requirement that the
variables appear in a specific order in the file to match the behavior
of 'rebase --interactive'.

The reason rerere(), rerere_forget() and rerere_remaining() take a
struct repository instead of struct index_state is not obvious from
the patch:
Deep in update_paths() and find_conflict(), hold_locked_index() and
read_index() are called. These functions assumes the index path at
$GIT_DIR/index which is not always true when you take an arbitrary
index state. Taking a repository will allow us to point to the right
index path later when we replace them with repo_ versions.
