Using the more restrictive oideq() should, in the long run,
give the compiler more opportunities to optimize these
callsites. For now, this conversion should be a complete
noop with respect to the generated code.
The result is also perhaps a little more readable, as it
avoids the "zero is equal" idiom. Since it's so prevalent in
C, I think seasoned programmers tend not to even notice it
anymore, but it can sometimes make for awkward double
negations (e.g., we can drop a few !!oidcmp() instances
here).
This patch was generated almost entirely by the included
coccinelle patch. This mechanical conversion should be
completely safe, because we check explicitly for cases where
oidcmp() is compared to 0, which is what oideq() is doing
under the hood. Note that we don't have to catch "!oidcmp()"
separately; coccinelle's standard isomorphisms make sure the
two are treated equivalently.
I say "almost" because I did hand-edit the coccinelle output
to fix up a few style violations (it mostly keeps the
original formatting, but sometimes unwraps long lines).

range-diff into the commentary section of a lone patch rather than
requiring a cover letter.
Implementation note: Generating a range-diff for insertion into the
commentary section of a patch which itself is currently being generated
requires invoking the diffing machinery recursively. However, the
machinery does not (presently) support this since it uses global state.
Consequently, we need to take care to stash away the state of the
in-progress operation while generating the range-diff, and restore it
after.

When generating a range-diff, matching up commits between two version of
a patch series involves heuristics, thus may give unexpected results.
git-range-diff allows tweaking the heuristic via --creation-factor.
Follow suit by accepting --creation-factor in combination with
--range-diff when generating a range-diff for a cover-letter.

When submitting a revised a patch series, the --range-diff option embeds
a range-diff in the cover letter showing changes since the previous
version of the patch series. The argument to --range-diff is a simple
revision naming the tip of the previous series, which works fine if the
previous and current versions of the patch series share a common base.
However, it fails if the revision ranges of the old and new versions of
the series are disjoint. To address this shortcoming, extend
--range-diff to also accept an explicit revision range for the previous
series. For example:
git format-patch --cover-letter --range-diff=v1~3..v1 -3 v2

make_cover_letter() returns early when it lacks sufficient state to emit
a diffstat, which makes it difficult to extend the function to reliably
emit additional generated content. Work around this shortcoming by
factoring diffstat-printing logic out to its own function and calling it
as needed without otherwise inhibiting normal control flow.

Many messages will be marked for translation in the following
commits. This commit updates some of them to be more consistent and
reduce diff noise in those commits. Changes are
- keep the first letter of die(), error() and warning() in lowercase
- no full stop in die(), error() or warning() if it's single sentence
messages
- indentation
- some messages are turned to BUG(), or prefixed with "BUG:" and will
not be marked for i18n
- some messages are improved to give more information
- some messages are broken down by sentence to be i18n friendly
(on the same token, combine multiple warning() into one big string)
- the trailing \n is converted to printf_ln if possible, or deleted
if not redundant
- errno_errno() is used instead of explicit strerror()

When users specify the commit range with 'Z..C' pattern for format-patch, all
the parents of Z (including Z) would be marked as UNINTERESTING which would
prevent revision walk in prepare_bases from getting the prerequisite commits,
thus `git format-patch --base <base_commit_sha> Z..C` won't be able to generate
the list of prerequisite patch ids. Clear UNINTERESTING flag with
clear_object_flags solves this issue.

"git format-patch --cover --attach" created a broken MIME multipart
message for the cover letter, which has been fixed by keeping the
cover letter as plain text file.

This should make these functions easier to find and cache.h less
overwhelming to read.
In particular, this moves:
- read_object_file
- oid_object_info
- write_object_file
As a result, most of the codebase needs to #include object-store.h.
In this patch the #include is only added to files that would fail to
compile otherwise. It would be better to #include wherever
identifiers from the header are used. That can happen later
when we have better tooling for it.

When formatting a series of patches using --attach and --cover-letter,
the cover letter lacks the closing MIME boundary, violating RFC 2046.
Certain clients, such as Thunderbird, discard the message body in such a
case.
Since the cover letter is just one part and sending it as
multipart/mixed is not very useful, always emit it as text/plain,
avoiding the boundary problem altogether.

In anticipation of making trees load lazily, create a Coccinelle
script (contrib/coccinelle/commit.cocci) to ensure that all
references to the 'maybe_tree' member of struct commit are either
mutations or accesses through get_commit_tree() or
get_commit_tree_oid().
Apply the Coccinelle script to create the rest of the patch.

Using the commit-graph file to walk commit history removes the large
cost of parsing commits during the walk. This exposes a performance
issue: lookup_tree() takes a large portion of the computation time,
even when Git never uses those trees.
In anticipation of lazy-loading these trees, rename the 'tree' member
of struct commit to 'maybe_tree'. This serves two purposes: it hints
at the future role of possibly being NULL even if the commit has a
valid tree, and it allows for unambiguous transformation from simple
member access (i.e. commit->maybe_tree) to method access.

it read_object_file. Do the same for read_sha1_file_extended.
Convert one use in grep.c to use the new function without any other code
change, since the pointer being passed is a void pointer that is already
initialized with a pointer to struct object_id. Update the declaration
and definitions of the modified functions, and apply the following

Patches generated by format-patch are meant to be exchanged as emails,
most of the time. And since it's generally agreed that text in mails
should be wrapped around 70 columns or so, make sure these diffstat
follow the convention (especially when used with --cover-letter since we
already defaults to wrapping 72 columns). The default can still be
overriden with command line options.

Currently the check whether to perform pickaxing is done via checking
`diffopt->pickaxe`, which contains the command line argument that we
want to pickaxe for. Soon we'll introduce a new type of pickaxing, that
will not store anything in the `.pickaxe` field, so let's migrate the
check to be dependent on pickaxe_opts.
It is not enough to just replace the check for pickaxe by pickaxe_opts,
because flags might be set, but pickaxing was not requested ('-i').
To cope with that, introduce a mask to check only for the bits indicating
the modes of operation.

When `log --decorate` is used, git will decorate commits with all
available refs. While in most cases this may give the desired effect,
under some conditions it can lead to excessively verbose output.
Introduce two command line options, `--decorate-refs=<pattern>` and
`--decorate-refs-exclude=<pattern>` to allow the user to select which
refs are used in decoration.
When "--decorate-refs=<pattern>" is given, only the refs that match the
pattern are used in decoration. The refs that match the pattern when
"--decorate-refs-exclude=<pattern>" is given, are never used in
decoration.
These options follow the same convention for mixing negative and
positive patterns across the system, assuming that the inclusive default
is to match all refs available.
(1) if there is no positive pattern given, pretend as if an
inclusive default positive pattern was given;
(2) for each candidate, reject it if it matches no positive
pattern, or if it matches any one of the negative patterns.
The rules for what is considered a match are slightly different from the
rules used elsewhere.
Commands like `log --glob` assume a trailing '/*' when glob chars are
not present in the pattern. This makes it difficult to specify a single
ref. On the other hand, commands like `describe --match --all` allow
specifying exact refs, but do not have the convenience of allowing
"shorthand refs" like 'refs/heads' or 'heads' to refer to
'refs/heads/*'.
The commands introduced in this patch consider a match if:
(a) the pattern contains globs chars,
and regular pattern matching returns a match.
(b) the pattern does not contain glob chars,
and ref '<pattern>' exists, or if ref exists under '<pattern>/'
This allows both behaviours (allowing single refs and shorthand refs)
yet remaining compatible with existent commands.

git-show is unique in that it wants to use textconv by default except
for when it is showing blobs. When asked to show a blob, show doesn't
want to use textconv unless the user explicitly requested that it be
used by providing the command line flag '--textconv'.
Currently this is done by using a parallel set of 'touched' flags which
get set every time a particular flag is set or cleared. In a future
patch we want to eliminate this parallel set of flags so instead of
relying on if the textconv flag has been touched, add a new flag
'TEXTCONV_SET_VIA_CMDLINE' which is only set if textconv is set to true
via the command line.

We cannot add many more flags to the diff machinery due to the
limitations of the number of flags that can be stored in a single
unsigned int. In order to allow for more flags to be added to the diff
machinery in the future this patch converts the flags to be stored in
bitfields in 'struct diff_flags'.

All of the callers of these functions just pass the hash member of a
struct object_id, so convert them to use a pointer to struct object_id
directly. Insert a check for NULL in expand_ref on a temporary basis;
this check can be removed when resolve_ref_unsafe is converted as well.

command has been taught to show progress report when it spends
long time preparing these many changes to replay (which would give
the user a chance to abort with ^C).

When generating patches for the rebase command, if the user does
not realize the branch they are rebasing onto is thousands of
commits different, there is no progress indication after initial
rewinding message.
The progress meter as presented in this patch assumes the thousands of
patches to have a fine granularity as well as assuming to require all
the same amount of work/time for each, such that a steady progress bar
is achieved.
We do not want to estimate the time for each patch based e.g.
on their size or number of touched files (or parents) as that is too
expensive for just a progress meter.
This patch allows a progress option to be passed to format-patch
so that the user can be informed the progress of generating the
patch. This option is then used by the rebase command when
calling format-patch.

When we're doing a reflog walk (instead of walking the
actual parent pointers), we may see commits multiple times.
For this reason, we hold on to the commit buffer for each
commit rather than freeing it after we've showed the commit.
We should do the same for the parent list. Right now this is
just a minor optimization. But once we refactor how reflog
walks are performed, keeping the parents will avoid
confusing us the second time we see the commit.

When we're walking reflogs, we leave the commit buffer and
parents in place. A comment explains that this is due to
"cycles". But the interesting thing is the unsaid
implication: that the cycles (plus our clearing of the SEEN
flag) will cause us to show commits multiple times. Let's
spell it out.

When a sha1 lookup returns the tree path via "struct
object_context", it just copies it into a fixed-size buffer.
This means the result can be truncated, and it means our
"struct object_context" consumes a lot of stack space.
Instead, let's allocate a string on the heap. Because most
callers don't care about this information, we'll avoid doing
it by default (so they don't all have to start calling
free() on the result). There are basically two options for
the caller to signal to us that it's interested:
1. By setting a pointer to storage in the object_context.
2. By passing a flag in another parameter.
Doing (1) would match the way that sha1_object_info_extended()
works. But it would mean that every caller would have to
initialize the object_context, which they don't currently
have to do.
This patch does (2), and adds a new bit to the function's
flags field. All of the callers that look at the "path"
field are updated to pass the new flag.

Setting "log.decorate=false" in the configuration file did not take
effect in v2.13, which has been corrected.

The recent change that introduced autodecorating of refs accidentally
broke the ability of users to set log.decorate = false to override it.
When the git_log_config was traversed a second time with an option other
than log.decorate, the decoration style would be set to the automatic
style, even if the user had already overridden it. Instead of setting
the option in config parsing, set it in init_log_defaults instead.
Add a test for this case. The actual additional config option doesn't
matter, but it needs to be something not already set in the
configuration file.

Convert lookup_commit, lookup_commit_or_die,
lookup_commit_reference, and lookup_commit_reference_gently to take
struct object_id arguments.
Introduce a temporary in parse_object buffer in order to convert this
function. This is required since in order to convert parse_object and
parse_object_buffer, lookup_commit_reference_gently and
lookup_commit_or_die would need to be converted. Not introducing a
temporary would therefore require that lookup_commit_or_die take a
struct object_id *, but lookup_commit would take unsigned char *,
leaving a confusing and hard-to-use interface.
parse_object_buffer will lose this temporary in a later patch.

Git's source code assumes that unsigned long is at least as precise as
time_t. Which is incorrect, and causes a lot of problems, in particular
where unsigned long is only 32-bit (notably on Windows, even in 64-bit
versions).
So let's just use a more appropriate data type instead. In preparation
for this, we introduce the new `timestamp_t` data type.
By necessity, this is a very, very large patch, as it has to replace all
timestamps' data type in one go.
As we will use a data type that is not necessarily identical to `time_t`,
we need to be very careful to use `time_t` whenever we interact with the
system functions, and `timestamp_t` everywhere else.

Currently, Git's source code treats all timestamps as if they were
unsigned longs. Therefore, it is okay to write "%lu" when printing them.
There is a substantial problem with that, though: at least on Windows,
time_t is *larger* than unsigned long, and hence we will want to switch
away from the ill-specified `unsigned long` data type.
So let's introduce the pseudo format "PRItime" (currently simply being
defined to "lu") to make it easier to change the data type used for
timestamps.

The default behaviour of "git log" in an interactive session has
been changed to enable "--decorate".

The prefix_filename() function returns a pointer to static
storage, which makes it easy to use dangerously. We already
fixed one buggy caller in hash-object recently, and the
calls in apply.c are suspicious (I didn't dig in enough to
confirm that there is a bug, but we call the function once
in apply_all_patches() and then again indirectly from
parse_chunk()).
Let's make it harder to get wrong by allocating the return
value. For simplicity, we'll do this even when the prefix is
empty (and we could just return the original file pointer).
That will cause us to allocate sometimes when we wouldn't
otherwise need to, but this function isn't called in
performance critical code-paths (and it already _might_
allocate on any given call, so a caller that cares about
performance is questionable anyway).
The downside is that the callers need to remember to free()
the result to avoid leaking. Most of them already used
xstrdup() on the result, so we know they are OK. The
remainder have been converted to use free() as appropriate.
I considered retaining a prefix_filename_unsafe() for cases
where we know the static lifetime is OK (and handling the
cleanup is awkward). This is only a handful of cases,
though, and it's not worth the mental energy in worrying
about whether the "unsafe" variant is OK to use in any
situation.

This function takes the prefix as a ptr/len pair, but in
every caller the length is exactly strlen(ptr). Let's
simplify the interface and just take the string. This saves
callers specifying it (and in some cases handling a NULL
prefix).
In a handful of cases we had the length already without
calling strlen, so this is technically slower. But it's not
likely to matter (after all, if the prefix is non-empty
we'll allocate and copy it into a buffer anyway).

when it's needed instead of letting log_write_email_headers() prepare
it in a static buffer in advance. This simplifies storage ownership and

In some projects, it is common to use "[RFC PATCH]" as the subject
prefix for a patch meant for discussion rather than application. A
new option "--rfc" was a short-hand for "--subject-prefix=RFC PATCH"
to help the participants of such projects.

Any text below the "-- " for the email signature gets treated as part of
the signature, and many mail clients will trim it from the quoted text
for a reply. Move it above the signature, so people can reply to it
more easily.
Similarly, when producing the patch as a MIME attachment, the
original code placed the base info after the attached part, which
would be discarded. Move the base info to the end of the part,
still inside the part boundary.
Add tests for the exact format of the email signature, and add tests
to ensure that the base info appears before the email signature when
producing a plain-text output, and that it appears before the part
boundary when producing a MIME attachment.

Change the default behavior of git-format-patch to generate numbered
sequence of 0/1 and 1/1 when generating both a cover-letter and a single
patch. This standardizes the cover letter to have 0/N which helps
distinguish the cover letter from the patch itself. Since the behavior
is easily changed via configuration as well as the use of -n and -N this
should be acceptable default behavior.

When "git rebase" tries to compare set of changes on the updated
upstream and our own branch, it computes patch-id for all of these
changes and attempts to find matches. This has been optimized by
lazily computing the full patch-id (which is expensive) to be
compared only for changes that touch the same set of paths.

The `rebase` family of Git commands avoid applying patches that were
already integrated upstream. They do that by using the revision walking
option that computes the patch IDs of the two sides of the rebase
(local-only patches vs upstream-only ones) and skipping those local
patches whose patch ID matches one of the upstream ones.
In many cases, this causes unnecessary churn, as already the set of
paths touched by a given commit would suffice to determine that an
upstream patch has no local equivalent.
This hurts performance in particular when there are a lot of upstream
patches, and/or large ones.
Therefore, let's introduce the concept of a "diff-header-only" patch ID,
compare those first, and only evaluate the "full" patch ID lazily.
Please note that in contrast to the "full" patch IDs, those
"diff-header-only" patch IDs are prone to collide with one another, as
adjacent commits frequently touch the very same files. Hence we now
have to be careful to allow multiple hash entries with the same hash.
We accomplish that by using the hashmap_add() function that does not even
test for hash collisions. This also allows us to evaluate the full patch ID
lazily, i.e. only when we found commits with matching diff-header-only
patch IDs.
We add a performance test that demonstrates ~1-6% improvement. In
practice this will depend on various factors such as how many upstream
changes and how big those changes are along with whether file system
caches are cold or warm. As Git's test suite has no way of catching
performance regressions, we also add a regression test that verifies
that the full patch ID computation is skipped when the diff-header-only
computation suffices.

to allow writing somewhere else than stdout. Let's make use of it.
Technically, we do not need to avoid that call in a builtin: we assume
that builtins (as opposed to library functions) are stand-alone programs
that may do with their (global) state. Yet, we want to be able to reuse
that code in properly lib-ified code, e.g. when converting scripts into
builtins.
Further, while we did not *have* to touch the cmd_show() and cmd_cherry()
code paths (because they do not want to write anywhere but stdout as of
yet), it just makes sense to be consistent, making it easier and safer to
move the code later.

The --color=auto handling is done by seeing if file descriptor 1
(the standard output) is connected to a terminal. format-patch
used freopen() to reuse the standard output stream even when sending
its output to an on-disk file, and this check is appropriate.
In the next step, however, we will stop reusing "FILE *stdout", and
instead start using arbitrary file descriptor obtained by doing an
fopen(3) ourselves. The check --color=auto does will become useless,
as we no longer are writing to the standard output stream.
But then, we do not need to guess to begin with. As argued in the commit
message of 7787570c (format-patch: ignore ui.color, 2011-09-13), we do not
allow the ui.color setting to affect format-patch's output. The only time,
therefore, that we allow color sequences to be written to the output files
is when the user specified the --color=always command-line option explicitly.

We are about to teach the log-tree machinery to reuse the diffopt.file
field to output to a file stream other than stdout, in line with the
diff machinery already writing to diffopt.file.
However, we might want to write something after the diff in
log_tree_commit() (e.g. with the --show-linear-break option), therefore
we must not let the diff machinery close the file (as per
diffopt.close_file.
This means that log_tree_commit() itself must override the
diffopt.close_file flag and close the file, and if log_tree_commit() is
called in a loop, the caller is responsible to do the same.
Note: format-patch has an `--output-directory` option. Due to the fact
that format-patch's options are parsed first, and that the parse-options
machinery accepts uniquely abbreviated options, the diff options
`--output` (and `-o`) are shadowed. Therefore close_file is not set to 1
so that cmd_format_patch() does *not* need to handle the close_file flag
differently, even if it calls log_tree_commit() in a loop.

Users may want to always use "--show-signature" while using git-log and
related commands.
When log.showSignature is set to true, git-log and related commands will
behave as if "--show-signature" was given to them.
Note that this config variable is meant to affect git-log, git-show,
git-whatchanged and git-reflog. Other commands like git-format-patch,
git-rev-list are not to be affected by this config variable.

There are two types of string_lists: those that own the
string memory, and those that don't. You can tell the
difference by the strdup_strings flag, and one should use
either STRING_LIST_INIT_DUP, or STRING_LIST_INIT_NODUP as an
initializer.
Historically, the normal all-zeros initialization has
corresponded to the NODUP case. Many sites use no
initializer at all, and that works as a shorthand for that
case. But for a reader of the code, it can be hard to
remember which is which. Let's be more explicit and actually
have each site declare which type it means to use.
This is a fairly mechanical conversion; I assumed each site
was correct as-is, and just switched them all to NODUP.

This output format prevents format-patch output from breaking
readers if somebody copy+pasted an mbox into a commit message.
Unlike the traditional "mboxo" format, "mboxrd" is designed to
be fully-reversible. "mboxrd" also gracefully degrades to
showing extra ">" in existing "mboxo" readers.
This degradation is preferable to breaking message splitting
completely, a problem I've seen in "mboxcl" due to having
multiple, non-existent, or inaccurate Content-Length headers.
"mboxcl2" is a non-starter since it's inherits the problems
of "mboxcl" while being completely incompatible with existing
tooling based around mailsplit.

(public, well-known) commit the original series was built on in
its output.

Maintainers or third party testers may want to know the exact base tree
the patch series applies to. Teach git format-patch a '--base' option
to record the base tree info and append it at the end of the first
message (either the cover letter or the first patch in the series).
The base tree info consists of the "base commit", which is a well-known
commit that is part of the stable part of the project history everybody
else works off of, and zero or more "prerequisite patches", which are
well-known patches in flight that is not yet part of the "base commit"
that need to be applied on top of "base commit" in topological order
before the patches can be applied.
The "base commit" is shown as "base-commit: " followed by the 40-hex of
the commit object name. A "prerequisite patch" is shown as
"prerequisite-patch-id: " followed by the 40-hex "patch id", which can
be obtained by passing the patch through the "git patch-id --stable"
command.
Imagine that on top of the public commit P, you applied well-known
patches X, Y and Z from somebody else, and then built your three-patch
series A, B, C, the history would be like:
---P---X---Y---Z---A---B---C
With "git format-patch --base=P -3 C" (or variants thereof, e.g. with
"--cover-letter" of using "Z..C" instead of "-3 C" to specify the
range), the base tree information block is shown at the end of the
first message the command outputs (either the first patch, or the
cover letter), like this:

When "git log" shows the log message indented by 4-spaces, the
remainder of a line after a HT does not align in the way the author
originally intended. The command now expands tabs by default in
such a case, and allows the users to override it with a new option,
'--no-expand-tabs'.

The change alone breaks a test in t4201 that runs "git shortlog"
on the output from "git log", and expects that the output from
"git log" does not do such a tab expansion. Adjust the test to
explicitly disable expand-tabs with --no-expand-tabs.

Rename detection is a very convenient feature, and new users shouldn't
have to dig in the documentation to benefit from it.
Potential objections to activating rename detection are that it
sometimes fail, and it is sometimes slow. But rename detection is
already activated by default in several cases like "git status" and "git
merge", so activating diff.renames does not fundamentally change the
situation. When the rename detection fails, it now fails consistently
between "git diff" and "git status".
This setting does not affect plumbing commands, hence well-written
scripts will not be affected.

We can pass -o/--output-directory to the format-patch command to store
patches in some place other than the working directory. This patch
introduces format.outputDirectory configuration option for same
purpose.
The case of usage of this configuration option can be convenience
to not pass every time -o/--output-directory if an user has pattern
to store all patches in the /patches directory for example.
The format.outputDirectory has lower priority than command line
option, so if user will set format.outputDirectory and pass the
command line option, a result will be stored in a directory that
passed to command line option.

Oftentimes, patches created by git format-patch will be stored in
version control or compared with diff. In these cases, two otherwise
identical patches can have different commit hashes, leading to diff
noise. Teach git format-patch a --zero-commit option that instead
produces an all-zero hash to avoid this diff noise.

Convert most instances where the sha1 member of struct object is
dereferenced to use get_object_hash. Most instances that are passed to
functions that have versions taking struct object_id, such as
get_sha1_hex/get_oid_hex, or instances that can be trivially converted
to use struct object_id instead, are not converted.

When working with paths in strbufs, we frequently want to
ensure that a directory contains a trailing slash before
appending to it. We can shorten this code (and make the
intent more obvious) by calling strbuf_complete.
Most of these cases are trivially identical conversions, but
there are two things to note:
- in a few cases we did not check that the strbuf is
non-empty (which would lead to an out-of-bounds memory
access). These were generally not triggerable in
practice, either from earlier assertions, or typically
because we would have just fed the strbuf to opendir(),
which would choke on an empty path.
- in a few cases we indexed the buffer with "original_len"
or similar, rather than the current sb->len, and it is
not immediately obvious from the diff that they are the
same. In all of these cases, I manually verified that
the strbuf does not change between the assignment and
the strbuf_complete call.
This does not convert cases which look like:
if (sb->len && !is_dir_sep(sb->buf[sb->len - 1]))
strbuf_addch(sb, '/');
as those are obviously semantically different. Some of these
cases arguably should be doing that, but that is out of
scope for this change, which aims purely for cleanup with no
behavior change (and at least it will make such sites easier
to find and examine in the future, as we can grep for
strbuf_complete).

We defaulted to ignoring merge diffs because long long ago, in a
galaxy far away, we didn't have a great way to show the diffs. The
whole "--cc" option goes back to January '06 and commit d8f4790e6f
("diff-tree --cc: denser combined diff output for a merge commit").
And before that option - so for about 8 months - we had no good way
to show the diffs of merges in a good dense way. So the whole
"don't show diffs for merges by default" actually made a lot of
sense originally, because our merge diffs were not very useful.
And this was carried forward to this day. "git log --cc" still
ignores merge commits, and you need to say "git log -m --cc" to view
a sensible rendition of merge and non-merge commits, even with the
previous change to make "--cc" imply "-p".
Teach "git log" that "--cc" means the user wants to see interesting
changes in merge commits by turning "-m" on.

The "--cc" option to "git log" is clearly a request to show some
sort of combined diff (be it --patch or --raw), but traditionally
we required the command line to explicitly ask for "git log -p --cc".
Teach the command line parser to treat a lone "--cc" as if the user
specified "-p --cc". Formats that do ask for other forms of diff
output, e.g. "log --raw --cc", are not overriden.

The revision walking API allows the callers to tweak its
configuration at the last minute, immediately after all the revision
and pathspec parameters are parsed from the command line but before
the default actions are decided based on them, by defining a "tweak"
callback function when calling setup_revisions(). Traditionally,
this facility was used by "git show" to turn on the patch output
"-p" by default when no diff output option (e.g. "--raw" or "-s" to
squelch the output altogether) is given on the command line, and
further give dense combined diffs "--cc" for merge commits when no
option to countermand it (e.g. "-m" to show pairwise patches).
Recently, "git log" started using the same facility, but we named
the callback function "default_follow_tweak()", as if the only kind
of tweaking we would want for "git log" will forever be limited to
turning "--follow" on by default when told by a configuration
variable. That was myopic.
Rename it to more generic name "log_setup_revisions_tweak()", and
match the one used by show "show_setup_revisions_tweak()".

In preparation for adding date modes that may carry extra
information beyond the mode itself, this patch converts the
date_mode enum into a struct.
Most of the conversion is fairly straightforward; we pass
the struct as a pointer and dereference the type field where
necessary. Locations that declare a date_mode can use a "{}"
constructor. However, the tricky case is where we use the
enum labels as constants, like:
show_date(t, tz, DATE_NORMAL);
Ideally we could say:
show_date(t, tz, &{ DATE_NORMAL });
but of course C does not allow that. Likewise, we cannot
cast the constant to a struct, because we need to pass an
actual address. Our options are basically:
1. Manually add a "struct date_mode d = { DATE_NORMAL }"
definition to each caller, and pass "&d". This makes
the callers uglier, because they sometimes do not even
have their own scope (e.g., they are inside a switch
statement).
2. Provide a pre-made global "date_normal" struct that can
be passed by address. We'd also need "date_rfc2822",
"date_iso8601", and so forth. But at least the ugliness
is defined in one place.
3. Provide a wrapper that generates the correct struct on
the fly. The big downside is that we end up pointing to
a single global, which makes our wrapper non-reentrant.
But show_date is already not reentrant, so it does not
matter.
This patch implements 3, along with a minor macro to keep
the size of the callers sane.

"git format-patch --ignore-if-in-upstream A..B", when either A or B
is a tag, failed miserably.
This is because the code passes the tips it used for traversal to
clear_commit_marks(), after running a temporary revision traversal
to enumerate the commits on both branches to find if they have
commits that make equivalent changes. The revision traversal
machinery knows how to enumerate commits reachable starting from a
tag, but clear_commit_marks() wants to take nothing but a commit.
In the longer term, it might be a more correct fix to teach
clear_commit_marks() to do the same "committish to commit"
dereferencing that is done in the revision traversal machinery,
but for now this fix should suffice.

When the previous commit introduced the branch_get_upstream
helper, there was one call-site that could not be converted:
the one in sha1_name.c, which gives detailed error messages
for each possible failure.
Let's teach the helper to optionally report these specific
errors. This lets us convert another callsite, and means we
can use the helper in other locations that want to give the
same error messages.
The logic and error messages come straight from sha1_name.c,
with the exception that we start each error with a lowercase
letter, as is our usual style (note that a few tests need
updated as a result).

navigate a series of possible-NULL values to get there.

The parse_options API expects an array of alternative usage lines
to which it automatically ads the language-appropriate "or" when
displaying. Each of these options is marked for translation with N_
and then later translated when gettext is called on each element
of the array.
Since the N_ macro just expands to its argument, if two N_-marked
strings appear next to each other without being separated by anything
else such as a comma, the preprocessor will join them into one string.
In that case two separate strings get marked for translation, but at
runtime they have been joined into a single string passed to gettext
which then fails to get translated because the combined string was
never marked for translation.
Fix this by properly separating the two N_ marked strings with
a comma and removing the embedded "\n" and " or:" that are
properly supplied by the parse_options API.

resolve_ref_unsafe takes a boolean argument for reading (a nonexistent ref
resolves successfully for writing but not for reading). Change this to be
a flags field instead, and pass the new constant RESOLVE_REF_READING when
we want this behaviour.
While at it, swap two of the arguments in the function to put output
arguments at the end. As a nice side effect, this ensures that we can
catch callers that were unaware of the new API so they can be audited.
Give the wrapper functions resolve_refdup and read_ref_full the same

Many config-parsing helpers, like parse_branch_color_slot,
take the name of a config variable and an offset to the
"slot" name (e.g., "color.branch.plain" is passed along with
"13" to effectively pass "plain"). This is leftover from the
time that these functions would die() on error, and would
want the full variable name for error reporting.
These days they do not use the full variable name at all.
Passing a single pointer to the slot name is more natural,
and lets us more easily adjust the callers to use skip_prefix
to avoid manually writing offset numbers.
This is effectively a continuation of 9e1a5eb, which did the
same for parse_diff_color_slot. This patch covers all of the
remaining similar constructs.

A handful of code paths had to read the commit object more than
once when showing header fields that are usually not parsed. The
internal data structure to keep track of the contents of the commit
object has been updated to reduce the need for this double-reading,
and to allow the caller find the length of the object.

"git format-patch" did not enforce the rule that the "--follow"
option from the log/diff family of commands must be used with
exactly one pathspec.

It's a common idiom to match a prefix and then skip past it
with strlen, like:
if (starts_with(foo, "bar"))
foo += strlen("bar");
This avoids magic numbers, but means we have to repeat the
string (and there is no compiler check that we didn't make a
typo in one of the strings).
We can use skip_prefix to handle this case without repeating
ourselves.

Most callsites which use the commit buffer try to use the
cached version attached to the commit, rather than
re-reading from disk. Unfortunately, that interface provides
only a pointer to the NUL-terminated buffer, with no
indication of the original length.
For the most part, this doesn't matter. People do not put
NULs in their commit messages, and the log code is happy to
treat it all as a NUL-terminated string. However, some code
paths do care. For example, when checking signatures, we
want to be very careful that we verify all the bytes to
avoid malicious trickery.
This patch just adds an optional "size" out-pointer to
get_commit_buffer and friends. The existing callers all pass
NULL (there did not seem to be any obvious sites where we
could avoid an immediate strlen() call, though perhaps with
some further refactoring we could).

Each of these sites assumes that commit->buffer is valid.
Since they would segfault if this was not the case, they are
likely to be correct in practice. However, we can
future-proof them by using get_commit_buffer.
And as a side effect, we abstract away the final bare uses
of commit->buffer.

This converts two lines into one at each caller. But more
importantly, it abstracts the concept of freeing the buffer,
which will make it easier to change later.
Note that we also need to provide a "detach" mechanism for a
tricky case in index-pack. We are passed a buffer for the
object generated by processing the incoming pack. If we are
not using --strict, we just calculate the sha1 on that
buffer and return, leaving the caller to free it. But if we
are using --strict, we actually attach that buffer to an
object, pass the object to the fsck functions, and then
detach the buffer from the object again (so that the caller
can free it as usual). In this case, we don't want to free
the buffer ourselves, but just make sure it is no longer
associated with the commit.
Note that we are making the assumption here that the
attach/detach process does not impact the buffer at all
(e.g., it is never reallocated or modified). That holds true
now, and we have no plans to change that. However, as we
abstract the commit_buffer code, this dependency becomes
less obvious. So when we detach, let's also make sure that
we get back the same buffer that we gave to the
commit_buffer code.

This works kind of like "--color=auto" - add decorations for interactive
use, but do not change defaults when scripting or when piping the output
to anything but a terminal.
You can use either
[log]
decorate=auto
in the git config files, or the "--decorate=auto" command line option to
choose this behavior.

Add an option to format-patch for reading a signature from a file.

When we print an email signature, we print the divider
"-- \n", then the signature string, then two newlines.
Usually the signature is a one-liner (and the default is just the
git version), so the extra newline makes sense. But one could
easily specify a multi-line signature, like this:
git format-patch --signature='this is my long signature
it has multiple lines
' ...
and it may end with its own newline, in which case we do not have
to add yet another one.

Because of the way "--follow" is implemented, we must have
exactly one pathspec. "git log" enforces this restriction,
but other users of the revision traversal code do not. For
example, "git format-patch --follow" will segfault during
try_to_follow_renames, as we have no pathspecs at all.
We can push this check down into diff_setup_done, which is
probably a better place anyway. It is the diff code that
introduces this restriction, so other parts of the code
should not need to care themselves.

This patch allows users to use the short form -q on
log and format-patch, which was non possible before.
Also the documentation of format-patch mentions -q now.
The documentation of log doesn't even talk about --quiet, so I'll leave
that for more experienced git contributors. ;)
It doesn't seem to change the default behavior, but in combination
with --stat for example it suppresses the actual stats.

This task emerged from b04ba2bb (parse-options: deprecate OPT_BOOLEAN,
2011-09-27). All occurrences of the respective variables have
been reviewed and none of them relied on the counting up mechanism,
but all of them were using the variable as a true boolean.
This patch does not change semantics of any command intentionally.

As of b04ba2bb4 OPTION_BOOLEAN was deprecated.
This commit removes all occurrences of OPTION_BOOLEAN.
In b04ba2bb4 Junio suggested to replace it with either
OPTION_SET_INT or OPTION_COUNTUP instead. However a pattern, which
occurred often with the OPTION_BOOLEAN was a hidden boolean parameter.
So I defined OPT_HIDDEN_BOOL as an additional possible parse option
in parse-options.h to make life easy.
The OPT_HIDDEN_BOOL was used in checkout, clone, commit, show-ref.
The only exception, where there was need to fiddle with OPTION_SET_INT
was log and notes. However in these two files there is also a pattern,
so we could think of introducing OPT_NONEG_BOOL.

Format-patch generates emails with the "From" address set to the
author of each patch. If you are going to send the emails, however,
you would want to replace the author identity with yours (if they
are not the same), and bump the author identity to an in-body
header.
Normally this is handled by git-send-email, which does the
transformation before sending out the emails. However, some
workflows may not use send-email (e.g., imap-send, or a custom
script which feeds the mbox to a non-git MUA). They could each
implement this feature themselves, but getting it right is
non-trivial (one must canonicalize the identities by reversing any
RFC2047 encoding or RFC822 quoting of the headers, which has caused
many bugs in send-email over the years).
This patch takes a different approach: it teaches format-patch a
"--from" option which handles the ident check and in-body header
while it is writing out the email. It's much simpler to do at this
level (because we haven't done any quoting yet), and any workflow
based on format-patch can easily turn it on.

The primary invariant of sort_in_topological_order() is that a
parent commit is not emitted until all children of it are. When
traversing a forked history like this with "git log C E":
A----B----C
\
D----E
we ensure that A is emitted after all of B, C, D, and E are done, B
has to wait until C is done, and D has to wait until E is done.
In some applications, however, we would further want to control how
these child commits B, C, D and E on two parallel ancestry chains
are shown.
Most of the time, we would want to see C and B emitted together, and
then E and D, and finally A (i.e. the --topo-order output). The
"lifo" parameter of the sort_in_topological_order() function is used
to control this behaviour. We start the traversal by knowing two
commits, C and E. While keeping in mind that we also need to
inspect E later, we pick C first to inspect, and we notice and
record that B needs to be inspected. By structuring the "work to be
done" set as a LIFO stack, we ensure that B is inspected next,
before other in-flight commits we had known that we will need to
inspect, e.g. E.
When showing in --date-order, we would want to see commits ordered
by timestamps, i.e. show C, E, B and D in this order before showing
A, possibly mixing commits from two parallel histories together.
When "lifo" parameter is set to false, the function keeps the "work
to be done" set sorted in the date order to realize this semantics.
After inspecting C, we add B to the "work to be done" set, but the
next commit we inspect from the set is E which is newer than B.
The name "lifo", however, is too strongly tied to the way how the
function implements its behaviour, and does not describe what the
behaviour _means_.
Replace this field with an enum rev_sort_order, with two possible
values: REV_SORT_IN_GRAPH_ORDER and REV_SORT_BY_COMMIT_DATE, and
update the existing code. The mechanical replacement rule is:
"lifo == 0" is equivalent to "sort_order == REV_SORT_BY_COMMIT_DATE"
"lifo == 1" is equivalent to "sort_order == REV_SORT_IN_GRAPH_ORDER"

The diff_opt infrastructure sets flags based on defaults and command
line options. It is impossible to tell whether a flag has been set
as a default or on explicit request. Update the structure so that
this detection is possible:
* Add an extra "opt->touched_flags" that keeps track of all the
fields that have been touched by DIFF_OPT_SET and DIFF_OPT_CLR.
* You may continue setting the default values to the flags, like
commands in the "log" family do in cmd_log_init_defaults(), but
after you finished setting the defaults, you clear the
touched_flags field;
* And then you let the usual callchain call diff_opt_parse(),
allowing the opt->flags be set or unset, while keeping track of
which bits the user touched;
* There is an optional callback "opt->set_default" that is called
at the very beginning to let you inspect touched_flags and update
opt->flags appropriately, before the remainder of the diffcore
machinery is set up, taking the opt->flags value into account.

If we do it after the revision traversal we can be sure that this is
indeed a commit that will be processed (i.e. not a merge) and it's the
top most one (thus removing the NEEDSWORK comment, at least we show the
same as 'git diff --stat' output that appears in the cover-letter).
While we are at it, since we know there's nothing to generate, exit
sooner in all cases, like --cover-letter currently does.
Also, if there's nothing to generate and cover-letter is specified, a
different code-path might be triggered that is not currently covered in
the test-case, so add a test for it.

This is a rewrite of much of Bo's work, mainly in an effort to split
it into smaller, easier to understand routines.
The algorithm is built around the struct range_set, which encodes a
series of line ranges as intervals [a,b). This is used in two
contexts:
* A set of lines we are tracking (which will change as we dig through
history).
* To encode diffs, as pairs of ranges.
The main routine is range_set_map_across_diff(). It processes the
diff between a commit C and some parent P. It determines which diff
hunks are relevant to the ranges tracked in C, and computes the new
ranges for P.
The algorithm is then simply to process history in topological order
from newest to oldest, computing ranges and (partial) diffs. At
branch points, we need to merge the ranges we are watching. We will
find that many commits do not affect the chosen ranges, and mark them
TREESAME (in addition to those already filtered by pathspec limiting).
Another pass of history simplification then gets rid of such commits.
This is wired as an extra filtering pass in the log machinery. This
currently only reduces code duplication, but should allow for other
simplifications and options to be used.
Finally, we hook a diff printer into the output chain. Ideally we
would wire directly into the diff logic, to optionally use features
like word diff. However, that will require some major reworking of
the diff chain, so we completely replace the output with our own diff
for now.

Teach various forms of "format-patch" command line to identify what
branch the patches are taken from, so that the branch description
is picked up in more cases.

Accept "-v" as a synonym to "--reroll-count", so that users can say

As I do not think of a reason why users would want to tell the
command to be "verbose", I think this should be OK.

We only try to get branch name in "format-patch origin" case or
similar and not "format-patch -22" where HEAD is automatically
added. Without correct branch name, branch description cannot be
added. Make sure we always get branch name.

find_branch_name() assumes to take refs/heads/<branch>. But we also
have symbolic refs, such as HEAD, that can point to a valid branch in
refs/heads and do not follow refs/heads/<branch> syntax. Remove the
assumption and apply normal ref resolution. After all it would be
confusing if rev machinery resolves a ref in one way and
find_branch_name() another.

The --reroll-count=$N option, when given a positive integer:
- Adds " v$N" to the subject prefix specified. As the default
subject prefix string is "PATCH", --reroll-count=2 makes it
"PATCH v2".
- Prefixes "v$N-" to the names used for output files. The cover
letter, whose name is usually 0000-cover-letter.patch, becomes
v2-0000-cover-letter.patch when given --reroll-count=2.
This allows users to use the same --output-directory for multiple
iterations of the same series, without letting the output for a
newer round overwrite output files from the earlier rounds. The
user can incorporate materials from earlier rounds to update the
newly minted iteration, and use "send-email v2-*.patch" to send out
the patches belonging to the second iteration easily.

The function switched between two operating modes depending on the
NULL-ness of its two parameters, as a hacky way to share small part
of implementation, sacrificing cleanliness of the API.
Implement "fmt_output_subject()" function that takes a subject
string and gives the name for the output file, and on top of it,
implement "fmt_output_commit()" function that takes a commit and
gives the name for the output file.

The function chooses from three operating modes (format using the
subject, the commit, or just number) based on NULL-ness of two of
its parameters, which is an ugly hack for sharing only a bit of
code.

Most functions that emit to a strbuf take the strbuf as their first
parameter; make this function follow suit.
The serial number of the patch being emitted (nr) and suffix used
for patch filename (suffix) are both recorded in rev_info; drop
these separate parameters and pass the rev_info directly.

When 'git log' is passed the --no-walk option, no revision walk takes
place, naturally. Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, however, the provided
revisions still get sorted by commit date. So e.g 'git log --no-walk
HEAD HEAD~1' and 'git log --no-walk HEAD~1 HEAD' give the same result
(unless the two revisions share the commit date, in which case they
will retain the order given on the command line). As the commit that
introduced --no-walk (8e64006 (Teach revision machinery about
--no-walk, 2007-07-24)) points out, the sorting is intentional, to
allow things like
git log --abbrev-commit --pretty=oneline --decorate --all --no-walk
to show all refs in order by commit date.
But there are also other cases where the sorting is not wanted, such
as
<command producing revisions in order> |
git log --oneline --no-walk --stdin
To accomodate both cases, leave the decision of whether or not to sort
up to the caller, by allowing --no-walk={sorted,unsorted}, defaulting
to 'sorted' for backward-compatibility reasons.

Originally the "--quiet" option was parsed by the
diff-option parser into the internal QUICK option. This had
the effect of silencing diff output from the log (which was
not intended, but happened to work and people started to
use it). But it also had other odd side effects at the diff
level (for example, it would suppress the second commit in
"git show A B").
To fix this, commit 1c40c36 converted log to parse-options
and handled the "quiet" option separately, not passing it
on to the diff code. However, it simply ignored the option,
which was a regression for people using it as a synonym for
"-s". Commit 01771a8 then fixed that by interpreting the
option to add DIFF_FORMAT_NO_OUTPUT to the list of output
formats.
However, that commit did not fix it in all cases. It sets
the flag after setup_revisions is called. Naively, this
makes sense because you would expect the setup_revisions
parser to overwrite our output format flag if "-p" or
another output format flag is seen.
However, that is not how the NO_OUTPUT flag works. We
actually store it in the bit-field as just another format.
At the end of setup_revisions, we call diff_setup_done,
which post-processes the bitfield and clears any other
formats if we have set NO_OUTPUT. By setting the flag after
setup_revisions is done, diff_setup_done does not have a
chance to make this tweak, and we end up with other format
options still set.
As a result, the flag would have no effect in "git log -p
--quiet" or "git show --quiet". Fix it by setting the
format flag before the call to setup_revisions.

While walking the revision list in get_patch_ids and cmd_cherry, we
check for each commit if there is more than one parent and ignore
the commit if that is the case. Instead, set rev_info.max_parents to
1 and let the revision traversal code handle it for us.

Ever since cherry was built-in in e827633 (Built-in cherry,
2006-10-24), it has set a bunch of options on the the rev_info that
are only used while outputting a patch. But since the built-in cherry
command never needs to output any patch (it uses add_commit_patch_id
and has_commit_patch_id instead), these options are just distractions,
so remove them.

get_patch_ids() takes an already initialized rev_info and a
prefix. The prefix is used when initalizing a second rev_info. Since
the initialized rev_info already has a prefix and the prefix never
changes, we can use the prefix from the initialized rev_info to
initialize the second rev_info.

We can ask git_committer_info to be strict about coming up
with an email, which will die automatically on a poorly
configured machine. This is better than letting invalid
message-ids into the wild.

Callers who ask for ERROR_ON_NO_NAME are not so much
concerned that the name will be blank (because, after all,
we will fall back to using the username), but rather it is a
check to make sure that low-quality identities do not end up
in things like commit messages or emails (whereas it is OK
for them to end up in things like reflogs).
When future commits add more quality checks on the identity,
each of these callers would want to use those checks, too.
Rather than modify each of them later to add a new flag,
let's refactor the flag.

Before commit 43ae9f4, we generated the tail of a message id
by calling git_committer_info and parsing the email out of
the result. 43ae9f4 changed to use ident_default_email
directly, so we didn't have to bother with parsing. As a
side effect, it meant we no longer used GIT_COMMITTER_EMAIL
at all.
In general, this is probably reasonable behavior. Either the
default email is sane on your system, or you are using
user.email to provide something sane. The exception is if
you rely on GIT_COMMITTER_EMAIL being set all the time to
override the bogus generated email.
This is unlikely to match anybody's real-life setup, but we
do use it in the test environment. And furthermore, it's
what we have always done, and the change in 43ae9f4 was
about cleaning up, not fixing any bug; we should be
conservative and keep the behavior identical.

The get_patch_filename function expects a commit argument
and uses it to get the sanitized subject line when making a
patch filename. However, we also want to use this same
function for the cover letter, which does not have a commit
object. The current solution is to create a fake commit with
the subject "cover letter". Instead, let's make the
get_patch_filename interface more flexibile, and allow
passing a direct subject.

We try to generate a sane message id for cover letters and
threading by appending some changing bits to the front of
the user's email address. The current code parses the email
out of the results of git_committer_info, but we can do this
much more easily by just calling ident_default_email
ourselves.

Config option diff.statGraphWidth=<width> is equivalent to
--stat-graph-width=<width>, except that the config option is ignored
by format-patch.
For the graph-width limiting to be usable, it should happen
'automatically' once configured, hence the config option.
Nevertheless, graph width limiting only makes sense when used on a
wide terminal, so it should not influence the output of format-patch,
which adheres to the 80-column standard.
