The unpack_trees() API used in checking out a branch and merging
walks one or more trees along with the index. When the cache-tree
in the index tells us that we are walking a tree whose flattened
contents is known (i.e. matches a span in the index), as linearly
scanning a span in the index is much more efficient than having to
open tree objects recursively and listing their entries, the walk
can be optimized, which is done in this topic.

The "head -c BYTES" option is non-portable (not in POSIX[1]). Change
such invocations to use the test_copy_bytes wrapper added in
48860819e8 ("t9300: factor out portable "head -c" replacement",
2016-06-30).
This fixes a test added in 9d2e330b17 ("ewah_read_mmap: bounds-check
mmap reads", 2018-06-14), which has been breaking
t5310-pack-bitmaps.sh on OpenBSD since 2.18.0. The OpenBSD ports
already have a similar workaround after their upgrade to 2.18.0[2].
I have not tested this on IRIX, but according to 4de0bbd898 ("t9300:
use perl "head -c" clone in place of "dd bs=1 count=16000" kluge",
2010-12-13) this invocation would have broken things there too.
Also, change a valgrind-specific codepath in test-lib.sh to use this
wrapper. Given where valgrind runs I don't think this would ever
become a portability issue in practice, but it's easier to just use
the wrapper than introduce some exception for the "make test-lint"
check being added here.

A test prerequisite defined by various test scripts with slightly
different semantics has been consolidated into a single copy and
made into a lazily defined one.

This makes sure that cache-tree is consistent with the index. The main
purpose is to catch potential problems by saving the index in
unpack_trees() but the line in write_index() would also help spot

A fair number of tests need to check that the filesystem supports file
names including "funny" characters, like newline, tab, and double-quote.
Jonathan Nieder suggested that this be extracted into a lazy prereq in
the top-level `test-lib.sh`. This patch effects that change.
The FUNNYNAMES prereq now uniformly requires support for newlines, tabs,
and double-quotes in filenames. This very slightly decreases the power
of some tests, which might have run previously on a system that supports
(e.g.) newlines and tabs but not double-quotes, but now will not. This
seems to me like an acceptable tradeoff for consistency.
One test (`t/t9902-completion.sh`) defined FUNNYNAMES to further require
the separators \034 through \037, the test for which was implemented
using the Bash-specific $'\034' syntax. I've elected to leave this one
as is, renaming it to FUNNIERNAMES.
After this patch, `git grep 'test_\(set\|lazy\)_prereq.*FUNNYNAMES'` has
only one result.

The --chain-lint option detects broken &&-chains by forcing the test to
exit early (as the very first step) with a sentinel value. If that
sentinel is the test's overall exit code, then the &&-chain is intact;
if not, then the chain is broken. Unfortunately, this detection does not
extend to &&-chains within subshells even when the subshell itself is
properly linked into the outer &&-chain.
Address this shortcoming by feeding the body of the test to a
lightweight "linter" which can peer inside subshells and identify broken
&&-chains by pure textual inspection. Although the linter does not
actually parse shell scripts, it has enough knowledge of shell syntax to
reliably deal with formatting style variations (as evolved over the
years) and to avoid being fooled by non-shell content (such as inside
here-docs and multi-line strings). It recognizes modern subshell
formatting:

Heuristics are employed to properly identify the extent of a subshell
formatted in the old-style since a number of legitimate constructs may
superficially appear to close the subshell even though they don't. For
example, it understands that neither "x=$(command)" nor "case $x in *)"
end a subshell, despite the ")" at the end of line.
Due to limitations of the tool used ('sed') and its inherent
line-by-line processing, only subshells one level deep are handled, as
well as one-liner subshells one level below that. Subshells deeper than
that or multi-line subshells at level two are passed through as-is, thus
&&-chains in their bodies are not checked.

we migrate away from SHA-1. While some of them must test against
exact object names, most of them do not have to use hardcoded

A test to see if the filesystem normalizes UTF-8 filename has been
updated to check what we need to know in a more direct way, i.e. a
path created in NFC form can be accessed with NFD form (or vice
versa) to cope with APFS as well as HFS.

Currently we have a variable, $_x40, which contains a regex that matches
a full 40-character hex constant. However, with NewHash, we'll have
object IDs that are longer than 40 characters. In such a case, $_x40
will be a confusing name. Create a $OID_REGEX variable which will
always reflect a regex matching the appropriate object ID, regardless of
the length of the current hash.

Currently we have a variable, $_z40, which contains the all-zero object
ID. However, with NewHash, we'll have an all-zero object ID which is
longer than 40 hex characters. In such a case, $_z40 will be a
confusing name. Create a $ZERO_OID variable which will always reflect
the all-zeros object ID, regardless of the length of the current hash.

There are some basic tests in our codebase that test that we get fixed
SHA-1 values. These are valuable because they make sure that our SHA-1
implementation is free of bugs, but obviously these tests will fail with
a different hash.
There are also tests which intentionally produce objects that have
collisions when truncated to a certain length to test our handling of
these cases. These tests, too, will fail with a different hash.
Add an SHA1 prerequisite to annotate both of these types of tests and
disable them when we're using a different hash. In the future, we will
create versions of these tests which handle both SHA-1 and NewHash.

On HFS (which is the default Mac filesystem prior to High Sierra),
unicode names are "decomposed" before recording.
On APFS, which appears to be the new default filesystem in Mac OS High
Sierra, filenames are recorded as specified by the user.
APFS continues to allow the user to access it via any name
that normalizes to the same thing.
This difference causes t0050-filesystem.sh to fail two tests.
Improve the test for a NFD/NFC in test-lib.sh:
Test if the same file can be reached in pre- and decomposed unicode.

It's possible to have libcurl installed but not the curl
command-line utility. The latter is not generally needed for
Git's http support, but we use it in t5561 for basic tests
of http-backend's functionality. Let's detect when it's
missing and skip this test.
Note that we can't mark the individual tests with the CURL
prerequisite. They're in a shared t556x_common that uses the
GET and POST functions as a level of indirection, and it's
only our implementations of those functions in t5561 that
requires curl. It's not a problem, though, as literally
every test in the script would depend on the prerequisite
anyway.

Running test scripts under -x option of the shell is often not a
useful way to debug them, because the error messages from the
commands tests try to capture and inspect are contaminated by the
tracing output by the shell. An earlier work done to make it more
pleasant to run tests under -x with recent versions of bash is
extended to cover posix shells that do not support BASH_XTRACEFD.

The previous patch resolved most of the test failures caused by
running our test suite with '-x' tracing and /bin/sh, and the
following patches in this series will resolve almost all of the
remaining failures. Unfortunately, not yet all.
Add means to disable '-x' tracing for individual test scripts by
setting the $test_untraceable variable to a non-empty value in the
test script before sourcing 'test-lib.sh'. However, since '-x'
tracing is not an issue with recent Bash versions supporting
BASH_XTRACEFD, i.e. v4.1 and later, don't disable tracing when the
test script is run with such a Bash version even when
$test_untraceable is set.

Add an EXPENSIVE_ON_WINDOWS prerequisite to mark those tests which are
very expensive to run on Windows, but cheap elsewhere.
Certain tests that heavily stress the filesystem or run a lot of shell
commands are disproportionately expensive on Windows, this
prerequisite will later be used by a tests that runs in 4-8 seconds on
a modern Linux system, but takes almost 10 minutes on Windows.
There's no reason to skip such tests by default on other platforms,
but Windows users shouldn't need to wait around while they finish.

Replace the perl/Makefile.PL and the fallback perl/Makefile used under
NO_PERL_MAKEMAKER=NoThanks with a much simpler implementation heavily
inspired by how the i18n infrastructure's build process works[1].
The reason for having the Makefile.PL in the first place is that it
was initially[2] building a perl C binding to interface with libgit,
this functionality, that was removed[3] before Git.pm ever made it to
the master branch.
We've since since started maintaining a fallback perl/Makefile, as
MakeMaker wouldn't work on some platforms[4]. That's just the tip of
the iceberg. We have the PM.stamp hack in the top-level Makefile[5] to
detect whether we need to regenerate the perl/perl.mak, which I fixed
just recently to deal with issues like the perl version changing from
under us[6].
There is absolutely no reason for why this needs to be so complex
anymore. All we're getting out of this elaborate Rube Goldberg machine
was copying perl/* to perl/blib/* as we do a string-replacement on
the *.pm files to hardcode @@LOCALEDIR@@ in the source, as well as
pod2man-ing Git.pm & friends.
So replace the whole thing with something that's pretty much a copy of
how we generate po/build/**.mo from po/*.po, just with a small sed(1)
command instead of msgfmt. As that's being done rename the files
from *.pm to *.pmc just to indicate that they're generated (see
"perldoc -f require").
While I'm at it, change the fallback for Error.pm from being something
where we'll ship our own Error.pm if one doesn't exist at build time
to one where we just use a Git::Error wrapper that'll always prefer
the system-wide Error.pm, only falling back to our own copy if it
really doesn't exist at runtime. It's now shipped as
Git::FromCPAN::Error, making it easy to add other modules to
Git::FromCPAN::* in the future if that's needed.
Functional changes:
* This will not always install into perl's idea of its global
"installsitelib". This only potentially matters for packagers that
need to expose Git.pm for non-git use, and as explained in the
INSTALL file there's a trivial workaround.
* The scripts themselves will 'use lib' the target directory, but if
INSTLIBDIR is set it overrides it. It doesn't have to be this way,
it could be set in addition to INSTLIBDIR, but my reading of [7] is
that this is the desired behavior.
* We don't build man pages for all of the perl modules as we used to,
only Git(3pm). As discussed on-list[8] that we were building
installed manpages for purely internal APIs like Git::I18N or
private-Error.pm was always a bug anyway, and all the Git::SVN::*
ones say they're internal APIs.
There are apparently external users of Git.pm, but I don't expect
there to be any of the others.
As a side-effect of these general changes the perl documentation
now only installed by install-{doc,man}, not a mere "install" as
before.

You may want to run the test suite with a different shell
than you use to build Git. For instance, you may build with
SHELL_PATH=/bin/sh (because it's faster, or it's what you
expect to exist on systems where the build will be used) but
want to run the test suite with bash (e.g., since that
allows using "-x" reliably across the whole test suite).
There's currently no good way to do this.
You might think that doing two separate make invocations,
like:
make &&
make -C t SHELL_PATH=/bin/bash
would work. And it _almost_ does. The second make will see
our bash SHELL_PATH, and we'll use that to run the
individual test scripts (or tell prove to use it to do so).
So far so good.
But this breaks down when "--tee" or "--verbose-log" is
used. Those options cause the test script to actually
re-exec itself using $SHELL_PATH. But wait, wouldn't our
second make invocation have set SHELL_PATH correctly in the
environment?
Yes, but test-lib.sh sources GIT-BUILD-OPTIONS, which we
built during the first "make". And that overrides the
environment, giving us the original SHELL_PATH again.
Let's introduce a new variable that lets you specify a
specific shell to be run for the test scripts. Note that we
have to touch both the main and t/ Makefiles, since we have
to record it in GIT-BUILD-OPTIONS in one, and use it in the
latter.

The "-x" tracing option implies "--verbose". This is a
problem when running under a TAP harness like "prove", where
we need to use "--verbose-log" instead. Instead, let's
handle this the same way we do for --valgrind, including the
recent fix from 88c6e9d31c (test-lib: --valgrind should not
override --verbose-log, 2017-09-05). Namely, let's enable
--verbose only when we know there isn't a more specific
verbosity option indicated.
Note that we also have to tweak `want_trace` to turn it on
(previously we just lumped $verbose_log in with $verbose,
but now we don't necessarily auto-set the latter).

When the test suite's "-x" option is used with bash, we end
up seeing cleanup cruft in the output:
$ bash t0001-init.sh -x
[...]
++ diff -u expected actual
+ test_eval_ret_=0
+ want_trace
+ test t = t

+ set +x
ok 42 - re-init from a linked worktree
This ranges from mildly annoying (for a successful test) to
downright confusing (when we say "last command exited with
error", but it's really 5 commands back).
We normally are able to suppress this cleanup. As the
in-code comment explains, we can't convince the shell not to
print it, but we can redirect its stderr elsewhere.
But since d88785e424 (test-lib: set BASH_XTRACEFD
automatically, 2016-05-11), that doesn't hold for bash. It
sends the "set -x" output directly to descriptor 4, not to
stderr.
We can fix this by also redirecting descriptor 4, and
paying close attention to which commands redirected and
which are not (see the updated comment).
Two alternatives I considered and rejected:
- unsetting and setting BASH_XTRACEFD; doing so closes the
descriptor, which we must avoid
- we could keep everything in a single block as before,
redirect 4>/dev/null there, but retain 5>&4 as a copy.
And then selectively restore 4>&5 for commands which
should be allowed to trace. This would work, but the
descriptor swapping seems unnecessarily confusing.

Add LIBPCRE1 and LIBPCRE2 prerequisites which are true when git is
compiled with USE_LIBPCRE1=YesPlease or USE_LIBPCRE2=YesPlease,
respectively.
The syntax of PCRE1 and PCRE2 isn't the same in all cases (see
pcresyntax(3) and pcre2syntax(3)). If test are added that test for
those they'll need to be guarded by these new prerequisites.
The subsequent patch will make use of LIBPCRE2, so LIBPCRE1 isn't
strictly needed for now, but let's add it for consistency and so that
checking for it doesn't have to be done with the less obvious "PCRE,
!LIBPCRE2", which while semantically the same is more confusing, and
would lead to bugs if PCRE v3 is ever released as the tests would mean
v1, not any non-v2 version.

The test for '--abbrev' in t4201-shortlog.sh assumes that the commits
generated in the test can always be uniquely abbreviated to 5 hex digits
but this is not always the case. If you were unlucky and happened to run
the test at (say) Thu Jun 22 03:04:49 2017 +0000, you would find that
the first commit generated would collide with a tree object created
later in the same test.
This can be simulated in the version of t4201-shortlog.sh prior to this
commit by setting GIT_COMMITTER_DATE and GIT_AUTHOR_DATE to 1498100689
after sourcing test-lib.sh.
Change the test to test --abbrev=35 instead of --abbrev=5 to almost
completely avoid the possibility of a partial collision and add a call
to test_tick in the setup to make the test repeatable (the latter alone
is sufficient to make it robust enough).

On Cygwin, "ulimit -s" does not report failure but it does not work
at all, which causes an unexpected success of some tests that
expect failures under a limited stack situation. This has been
fixed.

On cygwin (and MinGW), the 'ulimit' built-in bash command does not have
the desired effect of limiting the resources of new processes, at least
for the stack and file descriptors. However, it always returns success
and leads to several test prerequisites being erroneously set to true.
Add a check for cygwin and MinGW to the prerequisite expressions, using
a 'test_have_prereq !MINGW,!CYGWIN' clause, to guard against using ulimit.
This affects the prerequisite expressions for the ULIMIT_STACK_SIZE,
CMDLINE_LIMIT and ULIMIT_FILE_DESCRIPTORS prerequisites.

We already set ASAN_OPTIONS to abort if it finds any errors.
As we start to experiment with LSAN, the leak sanitizer,
it's convenient if we give it the same treatment.
Note that ASAN is actually a superset of LSAN and can do the
leak detection itself. So this only has an effect if you
specifically build with "make SANITIZE=leak" (leak detection
but not the rest of ASAN). Building with just LSAN results
in a build that runs much faster. That makes the
build-test-fix cycle more pleasant.
In the long run, once we've fixed or suppressed all the
leaks, it will probably be worth turning leak-detection on
for ASAN and just using that (to check both leaks _and_
memory errors in a single test run). But there's still a lot
of work before we get there.

The --verbose test option cannot be used with test harnesses
like "prove". Instead, you must use --verbose-log.
Since the --valgrind option implies --verbose, that means
that it cannot be used with prove. I.e., this does not work:
prove t0000-basic.sh :: --valgrind
You'd think it could be fixed by doing:
prove t0000-basic.sh :: --valgrind --verbose-log
but that doesn't work either, because the implied --verbose
takes precedence over --verbose-log. If the user has given
us a specific option, we should prefer that.

sum(1) is a command for calculating checksums of the contents of files.
It was part of early editions of Unix ("Research Unix", 1972/1973, [1]).
cksum(1) appeared in 4.4BSD (1993) as a replacement [2], and became part
of POSIX.1-2008 [3]. OpenBSD 5.6 (2014) removed sum(1).
We only use sum(1) in t1002 to check for changes in three files. On
MinGW we use md5sum(1) instead. We could switch to the standard command
cksum(1) for all platforms; MinGW comes with GNU coreutils now, which
provides sum(1), cksum(1) and md5sum(1). Use our standard method for
checking for file changes instead: test_cmp.
It's more convenient because it shows differences nicely, it's faster on
MinGW because we have a special implementation there based only on
shell-internal commands, it's simpler as it allows us to avoid stripping
out unnecessary entries from the checksum file using grep(1), and it's
more consistent with the rest of the test suite.
We already compare changed files with their expected new contents using
diff(1), so we don't need to check with "test_must_fail test_cmp" if
they differ from their original state. A later patch could convert the
direct diff(1) calls to test_cmp as well.
With all sum(1) calls gone, remove the MinGW-specific implementation
from test-lib.sh as well.

Long ago in 628522ec14 (sha1-lookup: more memory efficient
search in sorted list of SHA-1, 2007-12-29) we added
sha1_entry_pos(), a binary search that uses the uniform
distribution of sha1s to scale the selection of mid-points.
As this was a performance experiment, we tied it to the
GIT_USE_LOOKUP environment variable and never enabled it by
default.
This code was successful in reducing the number of steps in
each search. But the overhead of the scaling ends up making
it slower when the cache is warm. Here are best-of-five
timings for running rev-list on linux.git, which will have
to look up every object:

user 0m35.016s
sys 0m0.340s
$ time GIT_USE_LOOKUP=1 git rev-list --objects --all >/dev/null
real 0m37.364s
user 0m37.045s
sys 0m0.316s
The USE_LOOKUP version might have more benefit on a cold
cache, as the time to fault in each page would dominate. But
that would be for a single lookup. In practice, most
operations tend to look up many objects, and the whole pack
.idx will end up warm.
It's possible that the code could be better optimized to
compete with a naive binary search for the warm-cache case,
and we could have the best of both worlds. But over the
years nobody has done so, and this is largely dead code that
is rarely run outside of the test suite. Let's drop it in
the name of simplicity.
This lets us remove sha1_entry_pos() entirely, as the .idx
lookup code was the only caller. Note that sha1-lookup.c
still contains sha1_pos(), which differs from
sha1_entry_pos() in two ways:
- it has a different interface; it uses a function pointer
to access sha1 entries rather than a size/offset pair
describing the table's memory layout
- it only scales the initial selection of "mi", rather
than each iteration of the search
We can't get rid of this function, as it's called from
several places. It may be that we could replace it with a
simple binary search, but that's out of scope for this patch
(and would need benchmarking).

The build procedure has been improved to allow building and testing
Git with address sanitizer more easily.

By default, ASan will exit with code 1 when it sees an
error. This means we'll notice a problem when we expected
git to succeed, but not in a test_must_fail block.
Let's ask it to actually raise SIGABRT instead. That will
give us a signal death that test_must_fail will notice. As a
bonus, it may also leave a coredump, which can be handy for
digging into a failure.

We turn off ASan's leak detection by default in the test
suite because it's too noisy. But we don't do so until
part-way through test-lib. This is before we've run any
tests, but after we do our initial "./git" to see if the
binary has even been built.
When built with clang, this seems to work fine. However,
using "gcc -fsanitize=address", the leak checker seems to
complain more aggressively:

This is a leak in the sense that we never free it, but it's
in a global that is meant to last the whole program. So it's
not really interesting or in need of fixing. And at any
rate, mentioning leaks outside of the test_expect blocks is
certainly unwelcome, as it pollutes stderr.
Let's bump the setting of ASAN_OPTIONS higher in test-lib.sh
to catch our initial "can we even run git?" test. While
we're at it, we can add a comment to make it a bit less
inscrutable.

Add support for v2 of the PCRE API. This is a new major version of
PCRE that came out in early 2015[1].
The regular expression syntax is the same, but while the API is
similar, pretty much every function is either renamed or takes
different arguments. Thus using it via entirely new functions makes
sense, as opposed to trying to e.g. have one compile_pcre_pattern()
that would call either PCRE v1 or v2 functions.
Git can now be compiled with either USE_LIBPCRE1=YesPlease or
USE_LIBPCRE2=YesPlease, with USE_LIBPCRE=YesPlease currently being a
synonym for the former. Providing both is a compile-time error.
With earlier patches to enable JIT for PCRE v1 the performance of the
release versions of both libraries is almost exactly the same, with
PCRE v2 being around 1% slower.
However after I reported this to the pcre-dev mailing list[2] I got a
lot of help with the API use from Zoltán Herczeg, he subsequently
optimized some of the JIT functionality in v2 of the library.
Running the p7820-grep-engines.sh performance test against the latest
Subversion trunk of both, with both them and git compiled as -O3, and
the test run against linux.git, gives the following results. Just the
/perl/ tests shown:

I.e. the two are either neck-to-neck, but PCRE v2 usually pulls ahead,
when it does it's around 20% faster.
A brief note on thread safety: As noted in pcre2api(3) & pcre2jit(3)
the compiled pattern can be shared between threads, but not some of
the JIT context, however the grep threading support does all pattern &
JIT compilation in separate threads, so this code doesn't need to
concern itself with thread safety.
See commit 63e7e9d8b6 ("git-grep: Learn PCRE", 2011-05-09) for the
initial addition of PCRE v1. This change follows some of the same
patterns it did (and which were discussed on list at the time),
e.g. mocking up types with typedef instead of ifdef-ing them out when
USE_LIBPCRE2 isn't defined. This adds some trivial memory use to the
program, but makes the code look nicer.

A recent update to t5545-push-options.sh started skipping all the
tests in the script when a web server testing is disabled or
unavailable, not just the ones that require a web server. Non HTTP
tests have been salvaged to always run in this script.

Change the internal USE_LIBPCRE define, & build options flag to use a
naming convention ending in PCRE1, without changing the long-standing
USE_LIBPCRE Makefile flag which enables this code.
This is for preparation for libpcre2 support where having things like
USE_LIBPCRE and USE_LIBPCRE2 in any more places than we absolutely
need to for backwards compatibility with old Makefile arguments would
be confusing.
In some ways it would be better to change everything that now uses
USE_LIBPCRE to use USE_LIBPCRE1, and to make specifying
USE_LIBPCRE (or --with-pcre) an error. This would impose a one-time
burden on packagers of git to s/USE_LIBPCRE/USE_LIBPCRE1/ in their
build scripts.
However I'd like to leave the door open to making
USE_LIBPCRE=YesPlease eventually mean USE_LIBPCRE2=YesPlease,
i.e. once PCRE v2 is ubiquitous enough that it makes sense to make it
the default.
This code and the USE_LIBPCRE Makefile argument was added in commit
63e7e9d8b6 ("git-grep: Learn PCRE", 2011-05-09). At the time there was
no indication that the PCRE project would release an entirely new &
incompatible API around 3 years later.

Rename the LIBPCRE prerequisite to PCRE. This is for preparation for
libpcre2 support, where having just "LIBPCRE" would be confusing as it
implies v1 of the library.
None of these tests are incompatible between versions 1 & 2 of
libpcre, it's less confusing to give them a more general name to make
it clear that they work on both library versions.

Because TAP output does not like to see the remainder of the test
getting skipped after running one or more tests, bf4b7219
("test-lib.sh: Add check for invalid use of 'skip_all' facility",
2012-09-01) made sure that test_done errors out when this happens.
Instead, loosen the check so that we only pretend that the rest of
the test script did not exist in such a case. We'd lose a bit of
information (i.e. TAP does not notice that we are skipping some
tests), but not very much (i.e. TAP wasn't told how many tests are
skipped anyway).
This will allow inclusion of lib-httpd.sh in the middle of a test,
which will skip the remainder of the test scripts when tests that
involve web server are declined with GIT_TEST_HTTPD=false, for
example.

Some platforms have ulong that is smaller than time_t, and our
historical use of ulong for timestamp would mean they cannot
represent some timestamp that the platform allows. Invent a
separate and dedicated timestamp_t (so that we can distingiuish
timestamps and a vanilla ulongs, which along is already a good
move), and then declare uintmax_t is the type to be used as the
timestamp_t.

remove the temporary directory used during the test.

The convention "$remove_trash is set to the trash directory that is
used during the test, so that it will be removed at the end, but
under --debug option we set the varilable to empty string to
preserve the directory" made sense back when it was introduced, as
there was no $TRASH_DIRECTORY variable. These days, since no tests
looks at the variable, it is obscure and even risks that by mistake
the variable gets used for something else (e.g. remove_trash=yes)
and cause us misbehave. Worse yet, remove_trash was not initialized
to an empty string at the beginning, so a stray environment variable
the user has could have affected the logic when "--debug" is in use.
Rewrite the clean-up sequence in test_done helper to explicitly
check the $debug condition and remove the trash directory using
the $TRASH_DIRECTORY variable.
Note that "go to the directory one level above the trash and then
remove it" is kept and this is deliverate; test_at_end_hook_ will
keep running from the expected location, and also some platforms may
not like a directory that is serving as the $cwd of a still-active
process removed.

The original did "does $remove_trash exist? Then go one level above
and remove it". There was no problem under "--debug", where
the variable is left empty, as the first "test -d $remove_trash" would
have said "No, it doesn't".
With the check implemented in the previous step, we'd always get an
error under "--debug".

We had two similar bugs in the tests sporadically triggering error
messages during the removal of the trash directory, see commits
bb05510e5 (t5510: run auto-gc in the foreground, 2016-05-01) and
ef09036cf (t6500: wait for detached auto gc at the end of the test
script, 2017-04-13). The test script succeeded nonetheless, because
these errors are ignored during housekeeping in 'test_done'.
However, such an error is a sign that something is fishy in the test
script. Print an error message and abort the test script when the
trash directory can't be removed successfully or is already removed,
because that's unexpected and we would prefer somebody notice and
figure out why.

Git's source code refers to timestamps as unsigned long, which is
ill-defined, as there is no guarantee about the number of bits that
data type has.
In preparation of switching to another data type that is large enough
to hold "far in the future" dates, we need to prepare the t0006-date.sh
script for the case where we *still* cannot format those dates if the
system library uses 32-bit time_t.

Git's source code refers to timestamps as unsigned longs. On 32-bit
platforms, as well as on Windows, unsigned long is not large enough to
capture dates that are "absurdly far in the future".
It is perfectly valid by the C standard, of course, for the `long` data
type to refer to 32-bit integers. That is why the `time_t` data type
exists: so that it can be 64-bit even if `long` is 32-bit. Git's source
code simply uses an incorrect data type for timestamps, is all.
The earlier quick fix 6b9c38e14c (t0006: skip "far in the future" test
when unsigned long is not long enough, 2016-07-11) papered over this
issue simply by skipping the respective test cases on platforms where
they would fail due to the data type in use.
This quick fix, however, tests for *long* to be 64-bit or not. What we
need, though, is a test that says whether *whatever data type we use for
timestamps* is 64-bit or not.
The same quick fix was used to handle the similar problem where Git's
source code uses `unsigned long` to represent size, instead of `size_t`,
conflating the two issues.
So let's just add another prerequisite to test specifically whether
timestamps are represented by a 64-bit data type or not. Later, after we
switch to a larger data type, we can flip that prerequisite to test
`time_t` instead of `long`.

We found a few run-away here documents that are started with an
end-of-here-doc marker that is incorrectly spelled, e.g.
git some command >actual &&
cat <<EOF >expect
...
EOF &&
test_cmp expect actual
which ends up slurping the entire remainder of the script as if it
were the data. Often the command that gets misused like this exits
without failure (e.g. "cat" in the above example), which makes the
command appear to work, without ever executing the remainder of the
test.
Piggy-back on the test that catches &&-chain breakage to detect this
case as well.

The 'debug' test helper is supposed to facilitate debugging by running
a command of the test suite under gdb. Unfortunately, its usefulness
is severely limited, because that gdb session is not interactive,
since the test's, and thus gdb's standard input is redirected from
/dev/null (for a good reason, see 781f76b15 (test-lib: redirect stdin
of tests, 2011-12-15)).
Redirect gdb's standard file descriptors from/to the test

Eric Wong reported that while FreeBSD has a /usr/bin/unzip, it uses
different semantics from those that are needed by Git's tests: When
passing the -a option to Info-Zip, it heeds the text attribute of the
.zip file's central directory, while FreeBSD's unzip ignores that
attribute.
The common work-around is to install Info-Zip on FreeBSD, into
/usr/local/bin/.

Tests run with --valgrind call git commands through a wrapper script
that invokes valgrind on them. This script (valgrind.sh) is in turn
invoked through symlinks created for each command in t/valgrind/bin/.
Since e6e7530d (test helpers: move test-* to t/helper/ subdirectory)
these symlinks have been broken for test helpers -- they point to the
old locations in the root of the build directory. Fix that by teaching
the code for creating the links about the new location of the binaries,
and do the same in the wrapper script to allow it to find its payload.

When there is a TAP harness consuming the output of our test
scripts, the "--verbose" breaks the output by mingling
test command output with TAP. Because the TAP::Harness
module used by "prove" is fairly lenient, this _usually_
works, but it violates the spec, and things get very
confusing if the commands happen to output a line that looks
like TAP (e.g., the word "ok" on its own line).
Let's detect this situation and complain. Just calling
error() isn't great, though; prove will tell us that the
script failed, but the message doesn't make it through to
the user. Instead, we can use the special TAP signal "Bail
out!". This not only shows the message to the user, but
instructs the harness to stop running the tests entirely.
This is exactly what we want here, as the problem is in the
command-line options, and every test script would produce
the same error.
The result looks like this (the first "Bailout called" line
is in red if prove uses color on your terminal):

The "--verbose" option redirects output from arbitrary
test commands to stdout. This is useful for examining the
output manually, like:
./t5547-push-quarantine.sh -v | less
But it also means that the output is intermingled with the
TAP directives, which can confuse a TAP parser like "prove".
This has always been a potential problem, but became an
issue recently when one test happened to output the word
"ok" on a line by itself, which prove interprets as a test
success:

One answer is "if it hurts, don't do it", but that's not
quite the whole story. The Travis tests use "--verbose
--tee" so that they can get the benefit of prove's parallel
options, along with a verbose log in case there is a
failure. We just need the verbose output to go to the log,
but keep stdout clean.
Getting this right turns out to be surprisingly difficult.
Here's the progression of alternatives I considered:
1. Add an option to write verbose output to stderr. This is
hard to capture, though, because we want each test to
have its own log (because they're all run in parallel
and the jumbled output would be useless).
2. Add an option to write verbose output to a file in
test-results. This works, but the log is missing all of
the non-verbose output, which gives context.
3. Like (2), but teach say_color() to additionally output
to the log. This mostly works, but misses any output
that happens outside of the say() functions (which isn't
a lot, but is a potential maintenance headache).
4. Like (2), but make the log file the same as the "--tee"
file. That almost works, but now we have two processes
opening the same file. That gives us two separate
descriptors, each with their own idea of the current
position. They'll each start writing at offset 0, and
overwrite each other's data.
5. Like (4), but in each case open the file for appending.
That atomically positions each write at the end of the
file.
It's possible we may still get sheared writes between
the two processes, but this is already the case when
writing to stdout. It's not a problem in practice
because the test harness generally waits for snippets to
finish before writing the TAP output.
We can ignore buffering issues with tee, because POSIX
mandates that it does not buffer. Likewise, POSIX
specifies "tee -a", so it should be available
everywhere.
This patch implements option (5), which seems to work well
in practice.

We are careful in test_done to handle a results directory
with a space in it, but the "--tee" code path does not.
Doing:
export TEST_OUTPUT_DIRECTORY='/tmp/path with spaces'
./t000-init.sh --tee
results in errors. Let's consistently double-quote our path
variables so that this works.

JGit can show a fake ref "capabilities^{}" to "git fetch" when it
does not advertise any refs, but "git fetch" was not prepared to
see such an advertisement. When the other side disconnects without
giving any ref advertisement, we used to say "there may not be a
repository at that URL", but we may have seen other advertisement
like "shallow" and ".have" in which case we definitely know that a
repository is there. The code to detect this case has also been
updated.

Each test run generates a "count" file in t/test-results
that stores the number of successful, failed, etc tests.
If you run "t1234-foo.sh", that file is named as
"t/test-results/t1234-foo-$$.count"
The addition of the PID there is serving no purpose, and
makes analysis of the count files harder.
The presence of the PID dates back to 2d84e9f (Modify
test-lib.sh to output stats to t/test-results/*,
2008-06-08), but no reasoning is given there. Looking at the
current code, we can see that other files we write to
test-results (like *.exit and *.out) do _not_ have the PID
included. So the presence of the PID does not meaningfully
allow one to store the results from multiple runs anyway.
Moreover, anybody wishing to read the *.count files to
aggregate results has to deal with the presence of multiple
files for a given test (and figure out which one is the most
recent based on their timestamps!). The only consumer of
these files is the aggregate.sh script, which arguably gets
this wrong. If a test is run multiple times, its counts will
appear multiple times in the total (I say arguably only
because the desired semantics aren't documented anywhere,
but I have trouble seeing how this behavior could be
useful).
So let's just drop the PID, which fixes aggregate.sh, and
will make new features based around the count files easier
to write.
Note that since the count-file may already exist (when
re-running a test), we also switch the "cat" from appending
to truncating. The use of append here was pointless in the
first place, as we expected to always write to a unique file.

Skip tests that are unrunnable on platforms without 64-bit long
to avoid unnecessary test failures.

Git's source code refers to timestamps as unsigned longs. On 32-bit
platforms, as well as on Windows, unsigned long is not large enough
to capture dates that are "absurdly far in the future".
While we can fix this issue properly by replacing unsigned long with
a larger type, we want to be a bit more conservative and just skip
those tests on the maint track.

our tests under "bash", however, we can redirect the trace output
to another file descriptor to keep the standard error of programs
being tested intact.

Passing "-x" to a test script enables the shell's "set -x"
tracing, which can help with tracking down the command that
is causing a failure. Unfortunately, it can also _cause_
failures in some tests that redirect the stderr of a shell
function. Inside the function the shell continues to
respect "set -x", and the trace output is collected along
with whatever stderr is generated normally by the function.
You can see an example of this by running:
./t0040-parse-options.sh -x -i
which will fail immediately in the first test, as it
expects:
test_must_fail some-cmd 2>output.err
to leave output.err empty (but with "-x" it has our trace
output).
Unfortunately there isn't a portable or scalable solution to
this. We could teach test_must_fail to disable "set -x", but
that doesn't help any of the other functions or subshells.
However, we can work around it by pointing the "set -x"
output to our descriptor 4, which always points to the
original stderr of the test script. Unfortunately this only
works for bash, but it's better than nothing (and other
shells will just ignore the BASH_XTRACEFD variable).
The patch itself is a simple one-liner, but note the caveats
in the accompanying comments.
Automatic tests for our "-x" option may be a bit too meta
(and a pain, because they are bash-specific), but I did
confirm that it works correctly both with regular "-x" and
with "--verbose-only=1". This works because the latter flips
"set -x" off and on for particular tests (if it didn't, we
would get tracing for all tests, as going to descriptor 4
effectively circumvents the verbose flag).

To get the 'value' from '--option=value', test-lib.sh parses said
option running 'expr' with a regexp. This involves a subshell, an
external process, and a lot of non-alphanumeric characters in the
regexp.
Use a much simpler POSIX-defined shell parameter expansion instead to
do the same.

On Windows, there is no SIGPIPE. A consequence of this is that the
upstream process of a pipe does not notice the death of the downstream
process until the pipe buffer is full and writing more data returns an
error. This behavior is the reason for an annoying delay during the
execution of t7610-mergetool.sh: There are a number of test cases where
'yes' is invoked upstream. Since the utility is basically an endless
loop it runs, on Windows, until the pipe buffer is full. This does take
a few seconds.
The test suite has its own implementation of 'yes'. Modify it to produce
only a limited amount of output that is sufficient for the test suite.
The amount chosen should be sufficiently high for any test case, assuming
that future test cases will not exaggerate their demands of input from
an upstream 'yes' invocation.

MSYS2 (the POSIX emulation layer used by Git for Windows' Bash) actually
has a working mkfifo. The only problem is that it is only emulating
named pipes through the MSYS2 runtime; The Win32 API has no idea about
named pipes, hence the Git executable cannot access those pipes either.
The symptom is that Git fails with a '<name>: No such file or directory'
because MSYS2 emulates named pipes through special-crafted '.lnk' files.
The solution is to tell the test suite explicitly that we cannot use
named pipes when we want to test on Windows.
This lets t4056-diff-order.sh, t9010-svn-fe.sh and t9300-fast-import.sh
pass.

f400e51c (test-lib.sh: set prerequisite SANITY by testing what we
really need, 2015-01-27) improved the way SANITY prerequisite was
determined, but made the resulting code (incorrectly) imply that
SANITY is all about effects of permission bits of the containing
directory has on the files contained in it by the comment it added,
its log message and the actual tests.
State what SANITY is about more clearly in the comment, and test
that a file whose permission bits says should be unreadble truly
cannot be read.

Running tests with the "-x" option to make them verbose had some
unpleasant interactions with other features of the test suite.

The "-x" test-script option turns on the shell's "-x"
tracing, which can help show why a particular test is
failing. Unfortunately, this can create false negatives in
some tests if they invoke a shell function with its stderr
redirected. t5512.10 is such a test, as it does:
test_must_fail git ls-remote refs*master >actual 2>&1 &&
test_cmp exp actual
The "actual" file gets the "-x" trace for the test_must_fail
function, which prevents it from matching the expected
output.
There's no way to avoid this without managing the
trace flag inside each sub-function, which isn't really a
workable solution. But unless you specifically care about
t5512.10, we can work around it by enabling tracing only for
the specific tests we want.
You can already do:
./t5512-ls-remote.sh -x --verbose-only=16
to see the trace only for a specific test. But that doesn't
_disable_ the tracing in the other tests; it just sends it
to /dev/null. However, there's no point in generating a
trace that the user won't see, so we can simply disable
tracing whenever it doesn't have a matching verbose flag.
The normal case of just "./t5512-ls-remote.sh -x" stays the
same, as "-x" already implies "--verbose" (and
"--verbose-only" overrides "--verbose", which is why this
works at all). And for our test, we need only check
$verbose, as maybe_setup_verbose will have already
set that flag based on the $verbose_only list).

This is confusing, as the "exit 117" line and the error line
(which is printed in red, no less!) are not part of the test
at all, but are rather in the separate chain-lint test_eval.
Let's unset the "trace" variable when eval-ing the chain
lint check, which avoids this.
Note that we cannot just do a one-shot variable like:
trace= test_eval ...
as the behavior of one-shot variables for function calls
is not portable.

One possible way to fix this is to treat HOME like TERM: back up the
original value and temporarily restore it before say_color() runs
tput.
Instead, pre-compute and save the color control sequences before
changing either TERM or HOME. Use the saved control sequences in
say_color() rather than call tput each time. This avoids the need to
back up and restore the TERM and HOME variables, and it avoids the
overhead of a subshell and two invocations of tput per call to
say_color().

Developer support to automatically detect broken &&-chain in the

unnoticed. The new GIT_TEST_CHAIN_LINT mechanism allows you to

It's easy to miss an "&&"-chain in a test script, like:
test_expect_success 'check something important' '
cmd1 &&
cmd2
cmd3
'
The test harness will notice if cmd3 fails, but a failure of
cmd1 or cmd2 will go unnoticed, as their exit status is lost
after cmd3 runs.
The toy example above is easy to spot because the "cmds" are
all the same length, but real code is much more complicated.
It's also difficult to detect these situations by statically
analyzing the shell code with regexps (like the
check-non-portable-shell script does); there's too much
context required to know whether a &&-chain is appropriate
on a given line or not.
This patch instead lets the shell check each test by
sticking a command with a specific and unusual return code
at the top of each test, like:
(exit 117) &&
cmd1 &&
cmd2
cmd3
In a well-formed test, the non-zero exit from the first
command prevents any of the rest from being run, and the
test's exit code is 117. In a bad test (like the one above),
the 117 is lost, and cmd3 is run.
When we encounter a failure of this check, we abort the test
script entirely. For one thing, we have no clue which subset
of the commands in the test snippet were actually run.
Running further tests would be pointless, because we're now
in an unknown state. And two, this is not a "test failure"
in the traditional sense. The test script is buggy, not the
code it is testing. We should be able to fix these problems
in the script once, and not have them come back later as a
regression in git's code.
After checking a test snippet for --chain-lint, we do still
run the test itself. We could actually have a pure-lint
mode which just checks each test, but there are a few
reasons not to. One, because the tests are executing
arbitrary code, which could impact the later environment
(e.g., that could impact which set of tests we run at all).
And two, because a pure-lint mode would still be expensive
to run, because a significant amount of code runs outside of
the test_expect_* blocks. Instead, this option is designed
to be used as part of a normal test suite run, where it adds
very little overhead.
Turning on this option detects quite a few problems in
existing tests, which will be fixed in subsequent patches.
However, there are a number of places it cannot reach:
- it cannot find a failure to break out of loops on error,
like:

which will not notice failures of "cmd2 a" or "cmd b"
- it cannot find a missing &&-chain inside a block or
subfunction, like:
foo () {
cmd1
cmd2
}
foo &&
bar
which will not notice a failure of cmd1.
- it only checks tests that you run; every platform will
have some tests skipped due to missing prequisites,
so it's impossible to say from one run that the test
suite is free of broken &&-chains. However, all tests get
run by _somebody_, so eventually we will notice problems.
- it does not operate on test_when_finished or prerequisite
blocks. It could, but these tends to be much shorter and
less of a problem, so I punted on them in this patch.

If you run a test script like:
GIT_TRACE=1 ./t0061-run-command.sh
you may get test failures, because some tests capture and
check the stderr output from git commands (and with
GIT_TRACE set to 1, the trace output will be included
there).
When we see GIT_TRACE set like this, we print a warning to
the user. However, we can do even better than that by just
pointing it to descriptor 4, which all tests leave connected
to the test script's stderr. That's likely what the user
intended (and any scripts that do want to see GIT_TRACE
output will set GIT_TRACE themselves).
Not only does this avoid false negatives in the tests, but
it means the user will actually see trace output for git
calls that redirect their stderr (whereas before, it was
sometimes confusingly buried in a file).

Right now if a test script receives SIGINT (e.g., because a
test was hanging and the user hit ^C), the shell exits
immediately. This can be annoying if the test script did any
global setup, like starting apache or git-daemon, as it will
not have an opportunity to clean up after itself. A
subsequent run of the test won't be able to start its own
daemon, and will either fail or skip the tests.
Instead, let's trap SIGINT to make sure we do a clean
shutdown, and just chain it to a normal exit (which will
trigger any cleanup).

What we wanted out of the SANITY precondition is that the filesystem
behaves sensibly with permission bits settings.
- You should not be able to remove a file in a read-only directory,
- You should not be able to tell if a file in a directory exists if
the directory lacks read or execute permission bits.
We used to cheat by approximating that condition with "is the /
writable?" test and/or "are we running as root?" test. Neither test
is sufficient or appropriate in environments like Cygwin.

The SANITY prerequisite is really about whether the
filesystem will respect the permissions we set, and being
root is only one part of that. But the httpd tests really
just care about not being root, as they are trying to avoid
weirdness in apache (see a1a3011 for details).
Let's switch out SANITY for a new NOT_ROOT prerequisite,
which will let us tweak SANITY more freely.
We implement NOT_ROOT by checking `id -u`, which is in POSIX
and seems to be available even on MSYS. Note that we cannot
just call this "ROOT" and ask for "!ROOT". The possible
outcomes are:
1. we know we are root
2. we know we are not root
3. we could not tell, because `id` was not available
We should conservatively treat (3) as "does not have the
prerequisite", which means that a naive negation would not
work.

If ncurses needs ~/.terminfo for the current $TERM, then tput will
succeed before changing HOME to $TRASH_DIRECTORY but fail afterward.
Move the tests that determine whether there is color support after
changing HOME so that color=t is set if and only if tput would succeed
when say_color() is run.
Note that color=t is now set after --no-color is processed, so the
condition to set color=t has changed: it is now set only if
color has not already been set to the empty string by --no-color.
This disables color support for those that need ~/.terminfo for
their TERM, but it's better than filling the screen with:
tput: unknown terminal "custom-terminal-name-here"
An alternative would be to symlink or copy the user's terminfo
database into $TRASH_DIRECTORY, but this is tricky due to the lack of
a standard name for the terminfo database (for example, instead of a
~/.terminfo directory, NetBSD uses a ~/.terminfo.cdb database file).

The point of disallowing ".git" in the index is that we
would never want to accidentally overwrite files in the
repository directory. But this means we need to respect the
filesystem's idea of when two paths are equal. The prior
commit added a helper to make such a comparison for HFS+;
let's use it in verify_path.
We make this check optional for two reasons:
1. It restricts the set of allowable filenames, which is
unnecessary for people who are not on HFS+. In practice
this probably doesn't matter, though, as the restricted
names are rather obscure and almost certainly would
never come up in practice.
2. It has a minor performance penalty for every path we
insert into the index.
This patch ties the check to the core.protectHFS config
option. Though this is expected to be most useful on OS X,
we allow it to be set everywhere, as HFS+ may be mounted on
other platforms. The variable does default to on for OS X,
though.

When git is compiled with "-fsanitize=address" (using clang
or gcc >= 4.8), all invocations of git will check for buffer
overflows. This is similar to running with valgrind, except
that it is more thorough (because of the compiler support,
function-local buffers can be checked, too) and runs much
faster (making it much less painful to run the whole test
suite with the checks turned on).
Unlike valgrind, the magic happens at compile-time, so we
don't need the same infrastructure in the test suite that we
did to support --valgrind. But there are two things we can
help with:
1. On some platforms, the leak-detector is on by default,
and causes every invocation of "git init" (and thus
every test script) to fail. Since running git with
the leak detector is pointless, let's shut it off
automatically in the tests, unless the user has already
configured it.
2. When apache runs a CGI, it clears the environment of
unknown variables. This means that the $ASAN_OPTIONS
config doesn't make it to git-http-backend, and it
dies due to the leak detector. Let's mark the variable
as OK for apache to pass.
With these two changes, running
make CC=clang CFLAGS=-fsanitize=address test
works out of the box.

Usually running a test under "-v" makes it clear which
command is failing. However, sometimes it can be useful to
also see a complete trace of the shell commands being run in
the test. You can do so without any support from the test
suite by running "sh -x tXXXX-foo.sh". However, this
produces quite a large bit of output, as we see a trace of
the entire test suite.
This patch instead introduces a "-x" option to the test
scripts (i.e., "./tXXXX-foo.sh -x"). When enabled, this
turns on "set -x" only for the tests themselves. This can
still be a bit verbose, but should keep things to a more
manageable level. You can even use "--verbose-only" to see
the trace only for a specific test.
The implementation is a little invasive. We turn on the "set
-x" inside the "eval" of the test code. This lets the eval
itself avoid being reported in the trace (which would be
long, and redundant with the verbose listing we already
showed). And then after the eval runs, we do some trickery
with stderr to avoid showing the "set +x" to the user.
We also show traces for test_cleanup functions (since they
can impact the test outcome, too). However, we do avoid
running the noop ":" cleanup (the default if the test does
not use test_cleanup at all), as it creates unnecessary
noise in the "set -x" output.

The "--signed" option received by "git push" is first passed to the
transport layer, which the native transport directly uses to notice
that a push certificate needs to be sent. When the transport-helper
is involved, however, the option needs to be told to the helper with
set_helper_option(), and the helper needs to take necessary action.
For the smart-HTTP helper, the "necessary action" involves spawning
the "git send-pack" subprocess with the "--signed" option.
Once the above all gets wired in, the smart-HTTP transport now can
use the push certificate mechanism to authenticate its pushes.
Add a test that is modeled after tests for the native transport in
t5534-push-signed.sh to t5541-http-push-smart.sh. Update the test
Apache configuration to pass GNUPGHOME environment variable through.
As PassEnv would trigger warnings for an environment variable that
is not set, export it from test-lib.sh set to a harmless value when
GnuPG is not being used in the tests.
Note that the added test is deliberately loose and does not check
the nonce in this step. This is because the stateless RPC mode is
inevitably flaky and a nonce that comes back in the actual push
processing is one issued by a different process; if the two
interactions with the server crossed a second boundary, the nonces
will not match and such a check will fail. A later patch in the
series will work around this shortcoming.

We have been using NOT_{MINGW,CYGWIN} test prerequisites long
before Peff invented support for negated prerequisites e.g. !MINGW
and we still add more uses of the former. Convert them to the
latter to avoid confusion.

In some places we "echo" a string that is supplied by the calling
test script and may contain backslash sequences. The echo command
of some shells, most notably "dash", interprets these backslash
sequences (POSIX.1 allows this) which may scramble the test
output.

Allow adding a TEST_GIT_INDEX_VERSION variable to config.mak to set the
index version with which the test suite should be run.
If it isn't set, the default version given in the source code is
used (currently version 3).
To avoid breakages with index versions other than [23], also set the
index version under which t2104 is run to 3. This test only tests
functionality specific to version 2 and 3 of the index file and would
fail if the test suite is run with any other version.

The basic test used to leave unnecessary trash directories in the
t/ directory.

Commit 517cd55 set HARNESS_ACTIVE unconditionally in
sub-tests, because that value affects the output of
"--verbose". t0000 needs stable output from its sub-tests,
and we may or may not be running under a TAP harness.
That commit made the decision to always set the variable,
since it has another useful side effect, which is
suppressing writes to t/test-results by the sub-tests (which
would just pollute the real results).
Since the last commit, though, the sub-tests have their own
test-results directories, so this is no longer an issue. We
can now update a few comments that are no longer accurate
nor necessary.
We can also revisit the choice of HARNESS_ACTIVE. Since we
must choose one value for stability, it's probably saner to
have it off. This means that future patches could test
things like the test-results writing, or the "--quiet"
option, which is currently ignored when run under a harness.

In a shell snippet meant to be sourced by other shell scripts, an
opening #! line does more harm than good.
The harm:
- When the shell library is sourced, the interpreter and options from
the #! line are not used. Specifying a particular shell can
confuse the reader into thinking it is safe for the shell library
to rely on idiosyncrasies of that shell.
- Using #! instead of a plain comment drops a helpful visual clue
that this is a shell library and not a self-contained script.
- Tools such as lintian can use a #! line to tell when an
installation script has failed by forgetting to set a script
executable. This check does not work if shell libraries also start
with a #! line.
The good:
- Text editors notice the #! line and use it for syntax highlighting
if you try to edit the installed scripts (without ".sh" suffix) in
place.
The use of the #! for file type detection is not needed because Git's
shell libraries are meant to be edited in source form (with ".sh"
suffix). Replace the opening #! lines with comments.
This involves tweaking the test harness's valgrind support to find
shell libraries by looking for "# " in the first line instead of "#!"
(see v1.7.6-rc3~7, 2011-06-17).

A #! line in these files is misleading, since these scriptlets are
meant to be sourced with '.' (using whatever shell sources them)
instead of run directly using the interpreter named on the #! line.
Removing the #! line shouldn't hurt syntax highlighting since
these files have filenames ending with '.sh'. For documentation,
add a brief description of how the files are meant to be used in
place of the shebang line.

If $TEST_DIRECTORY is specified in the environment, convert the value
to an absolute path to ensure that it remains valid even when 'cd' is

In a number of tests, output that was produced by a shell script is
compared to expected output using test_cmp. Unfortunately, the MSYS bash--
when invoked via git, such as in hooks--converts LF to CRLF on output
(as produced by echo and printf), which leads to many false positives.
Implements a diff tool that undoes the converted CRLF. To avoid that
sub-processes are spawned (which is very slow on Windows), the tool is
implemented as a shell function. Diff is invoked as usual only when a
difference is detected by the shell code.

--valgrind-parallel was broken from the start: during review I made
the whole valgrind setup code conditional on not being a
--valgrind-parallel worker child. But even the children crucially
need $GIT_VALGRIND to be set; it should therefore have been set
outside the conditional.
The fix would be a two-liner, but since the introduction of the
feature, almost four months have passed without anyone noticing that
it is broken. So this feature is not worth the about hundred lines of
test-lib.sh complexity. Revert it.

When it was originally added, the git_remote_helpers library was used as
part of the tests of the remote-helper interface, but since commit
fc407f9 (Add new simplified git-remote-testgit, 2012-11-28) a simple
shell script is used for this.
A search on Ohloh [1] indicates that this library isn't used by any
external projects and even the Python remote helpers in contrib/ don't
use this library, so it is only used by its own test suite.
Since this is the only Python library in Git, removing it will make
packaging easier as the Python scripts only need to be installed for one
version of Python, whereas the library should be installed for all
available versions.

On systems that understand a CRLF as a line ending, tests in this
script that worked on files with CRLF line endings using "grep" to
extract matching lines may lose the CR at the end of lines that
match, causing the actual output not to match the expected output.

Define a common macro for grep needing -U to allow tests to not need
to inquire of specific platforms needing this option. Change
t3032 and t5560 to use this rather than testing explicitly for mingw.

Add a command to allow previewing the contents locally before
pushing it out, when working with a MediaWiki remote.
I personally do not think this belongs to Git. If you are working
on a set of AsciiDoc source files, you sure do want to locally
format to preview what you will be pushing out, and if you are
working on a set of C or Java source files, you do want to test it
before pushing it out, too. That kind of thing belongs to your
build script, not to your SCM.
But I'll let it pass, as this is only a contrib/ thing.

This patch makes the bin-wrappers prepend their modifications to
GITPERLLIB rather than redefining it. It also unset GITPERLLIB in the
test-suite to prevent broken $GITPERLLIB in the user's configuration
from interfering with the testsuite.
The codes using GIT_TEMPLATE_DIR and GIT_TEXTDOMAINDIR handle only one
path in each of this variable so this new behavior would be useless on
those variables.

Do not use FIFOs on cygwin, they do not work. Cygwin includes
coreutils, so has mkfifo, and that command does something. However,
the resultant named pipe is known (on the Cygwin mailing list at
least) to not work correctly.
This disables PIPE for Cygwin, allowing t0008.sh to complete (all other
tests in that file work correctly).

With the new --valgrind-parallel=<n> option, we support running the
tests in a single test script under valgrind in parallel using 'n'
processes.
This really follows the dumbest approach possible, as follows:
* We spawn the test script 'n' times, using a throw-away
TEST_OUTPUT_DIRECTORY. Each of the instances is given options that
ensures that it only runs every n-th test under valgrind, but
together they cover the entire range.
* We add up the numbers from the individual tests, and provide the
usual output.
This is really a gross hack at this point, and should be improved. In
particular we should keep the actual outputs somewhere more easily
discoverable, and summarize them to the user.
Nevertheless, this is already workable and gives a speedup of more
than 2 on a dual-core (hyperthreaded) machine, using n=4. This is
expected since the overhead of valgrind is so big (on the order of 20x
under good conditions, and a large startup overhead at every git
invocation) that redundantly running the non-valgrind tests in between
is not that expensive.

This is not really meant for external use, and thus not documented. It
allows the next commit to neatly distinguish between sub-tests and the
main run.
The format is intentionally not valid TAP. The use in the next commit
would not result in anything valid either way, and it seems better to
make it obvious.

With the new --valgrind-only=<pattern> option, one can enable
--valgrind at a per-test granularity, exactly analogous to
--verbose-only from the previous commit.
The options are wired such that --valgrind implies --verbose (as
before), but --valgrind-only=<pattern> implies
--verbose-only=<pattern> unless --verbose is also in effect.

With the new --verbose-only=<pattern> option, one can enable --verbose
at a per-test granularity. The pattern is matched against the test
number, e.g.
./t0000-basic.sh --verbose-only='2[0-2]'
to see only the full output of test 20-22, while showing the rest in the
one-liner format.
As suggested by Jeff King, this takes care to wrap the entire
test_expect_* block, but nothing else, in the verbose toggling. We
can use the test_start/end functions from the previous commit for the
purpose.
This is arguably not *too* useful on its own, but makes the next patch
easier to follow.

t0000 contains some light self-tests of test-lib.sh, but --verbose was
not covered. Add a test.
The only catch is that the presence of a test harness influences the
output (specifically, the presence of some empty lines). So we need
to unset TEST_HARNESS or set it to a known value. Leaving it unset
leads to spurious test failures in the final summary, which come from
the subtest. So we always set it.

1b3185f (MALLOC_CHECK: various clean-ups, 2012-09-14) moved around the
MALLOC_CHECK_ and MALLOC_PERTURB_ assignments, intending to limit
their effect to only the test runs. However, they were actually
enabled only during test cleanup. Call setup/teardown_malloc_check
also around the evaluation of the actual test snippet.

When TEST_OUTPUT_DIRECTORY setting is used, it was handled somewhat
inconsistently between the test framework and t/Makefile, and logic
to summarize the results looked at a wrong place.

Most test results go in $TEST_OUTPUT_DIRECTORY, but the output files for
tests run with --tee or --valgrind just use bare "test-results".
Changes these so that they do respect $TEST_OUTPUT_DIRECTORY.
As a result of this, the valgrind/analyze.sh script may no longer
inspect the correct files so it is also updated to respect
$TEST_OUTPUT_DIRECTORY by adding it to GIT-BUILD-OPTIONS. This may be a
regression for people who have TEST_OUTPUT_DIRECTORY in their config.mak
but want to override it in the environment, but this change merely
brings it into line with GIT_TEST_OPTS which already cannot be
overridden if it is specified in config.mak.

Fix longstanding issues with the test harness when used with --root=<there>
option.

After the location of $TRASH_DIRECTORY is adjusted by
$TEST_OUTPUT_DIRECTORY, we go on to use the $test variable to make the
trash directory and cd into it. This means that when
$TEST_OUTPUT_DIRECTORY is not "." and an absolute --root has not been
specified, we do not remove the trash directory once the tests are
complete (remove_trash is set to $TRASH_DIRECTORY).
Fix this by always referring to the trash directory as $TRASH_DIRECTORY.

tracking down thread interaction issues. This can unfortunately not
be done through GIT_VALGRIND_OPTIONS because any tool other than
memcheck would complain about unknown options.
Let --valgrind take an optional parameter that describes the valgrind
tool to invoke. The default mode is to run memcheck as before.

Native windows binaries do not understand posix-like
path mapping offered by cygwin. Convert paths to native
using "cygpath --windows" before presenting them to p4d.
This is done using the AltRoots mechanism of p4. Both the
posix and windows forms are put in the client specification,
allowing p4 to find its location by native path even though
the environment reports a different PWD.
Shell operations in tests will use the normal form of $cli,
which will look like a posix path in cygwin, while p4 will
use AltRoots to match against the windows form of the working
directory.
This mechanism also handles the symlink issue that was fixed in
23bd0c9 (git p4 test: use real_path to resolve p4 client
symlinks, 2012-06-27). Now that every p4 client view has
an AltRoots with the real_path in it, explicitly calculating
the real_path elsewhere is not necessary.

InfoZIP's unzip takes default parameters from the environment variable
UNZIP. Unset it in the test library and use GIT_UNZIP for specifying
alternate versions of the unzip command instead.
t0024 wasn't even using variable for the actual extraction. t5000
was, but when setting it to InfoZIP's unzip it would try to extract
from itself (because it treats the contents of $UNZIP as parameters),
which failed of course.

questionable, red is bad and blue is informative" scheme.

Now that we've adopted a "traffic lights" coloring scheme, yellow is
used for warning messages, so we need to re-color info messages to
something less alarmist. Blue is a universal color for informational
messages; however we are using that for skipped tests in order to
align with the color schemes of other test suites. Therefore we use
cyan which is also blue-ish, but visually distinct from blue.
This was suggested on the list a while ago and no-one raised any
objections:

An earlier iteration of this patch used bold cyan, but the point of
this change is to make them less alarming; let's drop the boldness.
Also paint the message to report skipping the whole thing via

Skipped tests indicate incomplete test coverage. Whilst this is not a
test failure or other error, it's still not a complete success.
Other testsuite related software like automake, autotest and prove
seem to use blue for skipped tests, so let's follow suit.

Yellow seems a more appropriate color than bold green when
considering the universal traffic lights coloring scheme, where
green conveys the impression that everything's OK, and amber that
something's not quite right.
Likewise, change the color of the summarized total number of known
breakages from bold red to the same yellow to be less alarmist and
more consistent with the above.
An earlier version of this patch used bold yellow but because these
are all long-known failures, reminding them to developers in bold
over and over does not help encouraging them to take a look at them
very much. This iteration paints them in plain yellow instead to
make them less distracting.

"echo" to interpret "\a" as if it were a C-string asking for a BEL

Recent nd/wildmatch series was the first to reveal this ancient bug
in the test scaffolding.

Only the first test t0000 in the test suite made sure we have built
Git to be tested; move the check to test-lib so that it applies to
all tests equally.

The most important in this change is to avoid affecting anything
when test-lib is used from perf-lib. It also limits the effect of
the MALLOC_CHECK only to what is run inside the actual test, and
uses a fixed MALLOC_PERTURB_ in order to avoid hurting repeatability
of the tests.

Recent versions of Linux libc (later than 5.4.23) and glibc (2.x)
include a malloc() implementation which is tunable via environment
variables. When MALLOC_CHECK_ is set, a special (less efficient)
implementation is used which is designed to be tolerant against
simple errors, such as double calls of free() with the same argument,
or overruns of a single byte (off-by-one bugs). When MALLOC_CHECK_
is set to 3, a diagnostic message is printed on stderr
and the program is aborted.
Setting the MALLOC_PERTURB_ environment variable causes the malloc
functions in libc to return memory which has been wiped and clear
memory when it is returned.
Of course this does not affect calloc which always does clear the memory.
The reason for this exercise is, of course, to find code which uses
memory returned by malloc without initializing it and code which uses
code after it is freed. valgrind can do this but it's costly to run.
The MALLOC_PERTURB_ exchanges the ability to detect problems in 100%
of the cases with speed.
The byte value used to initialize values returned by malloc is the byte
value of the environment value. The value used to clear memory is the
bitwise inverse. Setting MALLOC_PERTURB_ to zero disables the feature.
This technique can find hard to detect bugs.
It is therefore suggested to always use this flag (at least temporarily)
when testing out code or a new distribution.
But the test suite can use also valgrind(memcheck) via 'make valgrind'
or 'make GIT_TEST_OPTS="--valgrind"'.
Memcheck wraps client calls to malloc(), and puts a "red zone" on
each end of each block in order to detect access overruns.
Memcheck already detects double free() (up to the limit of the buffer
which remembers pending free()). Thus memcheck subsumes all the
documented coverage of MALLOC_CHECK_.
If MALLOC_CHECK_ is set non-zero when running memcheck, then the
overruns that might be detected by MALLOC_CHECK_ would be overruns
on the wrapped blocks which include the red zones. Thus MALLOC_CHECK_
would be checking memcheck, and not the client. This is not useful,
and actually is wasteful. The only possible [documented] advantage
of using MALLOC_CHECK_ and memcheck together, would be if MALLOC_CHECK_
detected duplicate free() in more cases than memcheck because memcheck's
buffer is too small.
Therefore we don't use MALLOC_CHECK_ and valgrind(memcheck) at the
same time.

If a test script issues a test_done without executing any tests, for
example when using the 'skip_all' facility, the output looks something
like this:
$ ./t9159-git-svn-no-parent-mergeinfo.sh

1..0 # SKIP skipping git svn tests, svn not found
$
The "passed all 0 test(s)" comment line, while correct, looks a little
strange. Add a check to suppress this message if no tests have actually
been run.

The 'skip_all' facility cannot be used after one or more tests
have been executed using (for example) 'test_expect_success'.
To do so results in invalid TAP output, which leads to 'prove'
complaining of "Parse errors: No plan found in TAP output".
Add a check for such invalid usage and abort the test with an
error message to alert the test author.

UTF8 behaviour of the filesystem (conversion from nfd to nfc) plays a
role in several tests and is tested in several tests. Therefore, move
the test from t0050 into the test lib and use the prerequisite in t0050.

The test prerequisite mechanism is a useful way to allow some tests
in a test script to be skipped in environments that do not support
certain features (e.g. it is pointless to attempt checking how well
symbolic links are handled by Git on filesystems that do not support
them). It is OK for commonly used prerequisites to be always tested
during start-up of a test script by having a codeblock that tests a
feature and calls test_set_prereq, but for an uncommon feature,
forcing 90% of scripts to pay the same probing overhead for
prerequisite they do not care about is wasteful.
Introduce a mechanism to probe the prerequiste lazily. Changes are:
- test_lazy_prereq () function, which takes the name of the
prerequisite it probes and the script to probe for it, is
added. This only registers the name of the prerequiste that can
be lazily probed and the script to eval (without running).
- test_have_prereq() function (which is used by test_expect_success
and also can be called directly by test scripts) learns to look
at the list of prerequisites that can be lazily probed, and the
prerequisites that have already been probed that way. When asked
for a prerequiste that can be but haven't been probed, the script
registered with an earlier call to test_lazy_prereq is evaluated
and the prerequisite is set.
- test_run_lazy_prereq_() function is a helper to run the probe
script with the same kind of sandbox as regular tests, helped by
Jeff King.
Update the codeblock to probe and set SYMLINKS prerequisite using
the new mechanism as an example.

Reorders t/test-lib.sh so that we dot-source GIT-BUILD-OPTIONS that
records the shell and Perl the user told us to use with Git a lot
early, so that test-lib.sh script itself can use "$PERL_PATH" in
one of its early operations.

This dot-sources GIT-BUILD-OPTIONS a lot earlier in test-lib.sh so
that its use of "perl" can use "$PERL_PATH" to choose the version of
Perl the user told us is suitable for our use.
This is iffy; I didn't check it very carefully, and I would not be
surprised if there are subtle breakages.

Most notably, t4031 creates a small shell script that invokes perl
and we want to use "$PERL_PATH" to name the version of Perl suitable
for our use, read from GIT-BUILD-OPTS. The test would fail when it
is directly run in t/ directory from the shell or "make" is run in t/
directory.
This problem was hidden from "make test" run in the top-level
directory, because its Makefile exports PERL_PATH.

A broken shell may not let us set an environment value to an arbitrary
value, interfering with some of the tests. Introduce a test prerequisite
so that we can skip some tests on such a platform.

$COLUMNS must be unset to not interfere with the tests. The tests
already ignore the terminal size because output is redirected to a
file, but COLUMNS overrides terminal size detection and changes the
test output away from the standard 80.

If any test script is run directly with Solaris 10 /usr/xpg4/bin/sh or
/bin/ksh, it fails spuriously with a message like:
t0000-basic.sh[31]: unset: bad argument count
This happens because those shells bail out when encountering a call to
"unset" with no arguments, and such unset call could take place in
'test-lib.sh'. Fix that issue, and add a proper comment to ensure we
don't regress in this respect.

This introduces a performance testing framework under t/perf/. It
tries to be as close to the test-lib.sh infrastructure as possible,
and thus should be easy to get used to for git developers.
The following points were considered for the implementation:
1. You usually want to compare arbitrary revisions/build trees against
each other. They may not have the performance test under
consideration, or even the perf-lib.sh infrastructure.
To cope with this, the 'run' script lets you specify arbitrary
build dirs and revisions. It even automatically builds the revisions
if it doesn't have them at hand yet.
2. Usually you would not want to run all tests. It would take too
long anyway. The 'run' script lets you specify which tests to run;
or you can also do it manually. There is a Makefile for
discoverability and 'make clean', but it is not meant for
real-world use.
3. Creating test repos from scratch in every test is extremely
time-consuming, and shipping or downloading such large/weird repos
is out of the question.
We leave this decision to the user. Two different sizes of test
repos can be configured, and the scripts just copy one or more of
those (using hardlinks for the object store). By default it tries
to use the build tree's git.git repository.
This is fairly fast and versatile. Using a copy instead of a clone
preserves many properties that the user may want to test for, such
as lots of loose objects, unpacked refs, etc.

Many of the scripts in the test suite write small helper
shell scripts to disk. It's best if these shell scripts
start with "#!$SHELL_PATH" rather than "#!/bin/sh", because
/bin/sh on some platforms is too buggy to be used.
However, it can be cumbersome to expand $SHELL_PATH, because
the usual recipe for writing a script is:
cat >foo.sh <<-\EOF
#!/bin/sh
echo my arguments are "$@"
EOF
To expand $SHELL_PATH, you have to either interpolate the
here-doc (which would require quoting "\$@"), or split the
creation into two commands (interpolating the $SHELL_PATH
line, but not the rest of the script). Let's provide a
helper function that makes that less syntactically painful.
While we're at it, this helper can also take care of the
"chmod +x" that typically comes after the creation of such a
script, saving the caller a line.

Traditionally, a cleanly resolved merge was committed by "git merge" using
the auto-generated merge commit log message without invoking the editor.
After 5 years of use in the field, it turns out that people perform too
many unjustified merges of the upstream history into their topic branches.
These merges are not just useless, but they are often not explained well,
and making the end result unreadable when it gets time for merging their
history back to their upstream.
Earlier we added the "--edit" option to the command, so that people can
edit the log message to explain and justify their merge commits. Let's
take it one step further and spawn the editor by default when we are in an
interactive session (i.e. the standard input and the standard output are
pointing at the same tty device).
There may be existing scripts that leave the standard input and the
standard output of the "git merge" connected to whatever environment the
scripts were started, and such invocation might trigger the above
"interactive session" heuristics. GIT_MERGE_AUTOEDIT environment variable
can be set to "no" at the beginning of such scripts to use the historical
behaviour while the script runs.
Note that this backward compatibility is meant only for scripts, and we
deliberately do *not* support "merge.edit = yes/no/auto" configuration
option to allow people to keep the historical behaviour.

Since 781f76b15 (test-lib: redirect stdin of tests) you can't simply put a
"bash &&" into a test for debugging purposes anymore. Instead you'll have
to use "bash <&6 >&3 2>&4".
As that invocation is not that easy to remember add the test_pause
convenience function. It invokes "$SHELL_PATH" to provide a sane shell
for the user.
This function also checks if the -v flag is given and will error out if
that is not the case instead of letting the test hang until ^D is pressed.
