Teach git-ls-files a new option --debug that just tacks all available
data from the cache onto each file's line.

The behavior of "git ls-files -t" is very misleading (see
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.version-control.git/126516 and
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.version-control.git/144394/focus=144397
for examples of mislead users) and badly documented, hence we point the
users to superior alternatives.
The feature is marked as "semi-obsolete" but not "scheduled for removal"
since it's a plumbing command, scripts might use it, and Git testsuite
already uses it to test the state of the index.

documentation introduced in c64b9b8 (Reference documentation for the
core git commands., 2005-05-05)!
However, the tool is now called git-ls-files.

The documentation was quite inconsistent when spelling 'git cmd' if it
only refers to the program, not to some specific invocation syntax:
both 'git-cmd' and 'git cmd' spellings exist.
The current trend goes towards dashless forms, and there is precedent
in 647ac70 (git-svn.txt: stop using dash-form of commands.,
2009-07-07) to actively eliminate the dashed variants.
Replace 'git-cmd' with 'git cmd' throughout, except where git-shell,
git-cvsserver, git-upload-pack, git-receive-pack, and
git-upload-archive are concerned, because those really live in the
$PATH.
Commit b5227d8 changed the behavior of "ls-files" with
respect to includes, but accidentally broke the "-i" option
The original behavior was:
1. if no "-i" is given, cull all results according to --exclude*
2. if "-i" is given, show the inverse of (1)
The broken behavior was:
1. if no "-i" is given:
a. for "-o", cull results according to --exclude*
b. for index files, always show all
2. if "-i" is given:
a. for "-o", shows the inverse of (1a)
b. for index files, always show all
The fixed behavior keeps the new (1b) behavior introduced
by b5227d8, but fixes the (2b) behavior to show only ignored
files, not all files.
This patch also tweaks the documentation. The original text
was somewhat obscure in the first place, but it is also now
inaccurate (the relationship between (1b) and (2b) is not
quite a "reverse").

commandline; they are just names. So we render them in italics,
as is usual for command names in manpages.

Following what appears to be the predominant style, format
names of commands and commandlines both as `teletype text`.
While we're at it, add articles ("a" and "the") in some
places, italicize the name of the command in the manual page
synopsis line, and add a comma or two where it seems appropriate.

Since the git-* commands are not installed in $(bindir), using
"git-command <parameters>" in examples in the documentation is
not a good idea. On the other hand, it is nice to be able to
refer to each command using one hyphenated word. (There is no
escaping it, anyway: man page names cannot have spaces in them.)
This patch retains the dash in naming an operation, command,
program, process, or action. Complete command lines that can
be entered at a shell (i.e., without options omitted) are
made to use the dashless form.
The changes consist only of replacing some spaces with hyphens
and vice versa. After a "s/ /-/g", the unpatched and patched
versions are identical.

The OPTIONS section of a documentation file contains a list
of the options a git command accepts.
Currently there are several variants to describe the case that
different options (almost) do the same in the OPTIONS section.
Some are:
-f, --foo::
-f|--foo::
-f | --foo::
But AsciiDoc has the special form:
-f::
--foo::
This patch applies this form to the documentation of the whole git suite,
and removes useless em-dash prevention, so \--foo becomes --foo.

This default regex now matches explicit values, and unfortunately in this
case gitlink was being matched by just 'link', causing the wrong inline
macro template to be applied. By renaming the macro, we can avoid being
matched by the wrong regex.

This uses "git-apply --whitespace=strip" to fix whitespace errors that have
crept in to our source files over time. There are a few files that need
to have trailing whitespaces (most notably, test vectors). The results
still passes the test, and build result in Documentation/ area is unchanged.

Only git-ls-files(1) describes the gitignore format in detail, and it does so
with reference to git-ls-files options. Most users don't use the plumbing
command git-ls-files directly, and shouldn't have to look in its manpage for
information on the gitignore format.
Create a new manpage gitignore(5) (Documentation/gitignore.txt), and factor
out the gitignore documentation into that file, changing it to refer to
.gitignore and $GIT_DIR/info/exclude as used by porcelain commands. Reference
gitignore(5) from other relevant manpages and documentation. Remove
now-redundant information on exclude patterns from git-ls-files(1), leaving
only information on how git-ls-files options specify exclude patterns and what
precedence they have.

A bare "--" doesn't show up in man or html pages correctly
as two individual dashes unless backslashed as \--
in the asciidoc source. Note, no backslash is needed
inside a literal block.

Fix error handling for nonexistent names
Without the --directory flag, git-ls-files wouldn't ever list directories,
producing no output for empty directories, which is good since they cannot
be added and they bear no content, even untracked one (if Git ever starts
tracking directories on their own, this should obviously change since the
content notion will change).
With the --directory flag however, git-ls-files would list even empty
directories. This may be good in some situations but sometimes you want to
prevent that. This patch adds a --no-empty-directory option which makes
git-ls-files omit empty directories.

The fixes focuses on improving the HTML output. Most noteworthy:
- Fix the Makefile to also make various *.html files depend on
included files.
- Consistently use 'NOTE: ...' instead of '[ ... ]' for additional
info.
- Fix ending '::' for description lists in OPTION section etc.
- Fix paragraphs in description lists ending up as preformated text.
- Always use listingblocks (preformatted text wrapped in lines with -----)
for examples that span empty lines, so they are put in only one HTML
block.
- Use '1.' instead of '(1)' for numbered lists.
- Fix linking to other GIT docs.
- git-rev-list.txt: put option descriptions in an OPTION section.
