Now that all front end use qemu_chr_fe_init(), we can move chardev
claiming in init(), and add a function deinit() to release the chardev
and cleanup handlers.
The qemu_chr_fe_claim_no_fail() for property are gone, since the
property will raise an error instead. In other cases, where there is
already an error path, an error is raised instead. Finally, other cases
are handled by &error_abort in qemu_chr_fe_init().

Instead of requiring clients to actually call the query-cpu-*

This is implemented by extending the existing hack at

Now that we allow CPU hot unplug on a few platforms, we can end up in a
situation where we don't have a CPU with index 0. Or at least we could,
if we didn't have code to explicitly prohibit unplug of CPU 0.
Longer term we want to allow CPU 0 unplug, this patch is an early step in
allowing this, by removing an assumption in the monitor code that CPU 0

We currently define QMP commands in two places: the QAPI schema and
qmp-commands.hx. The latter is preprocessed, the former is not. We
use the preprocessor to suppress configuration-specific commands. For
instance, query-spice is only available #ifdef CONFIG_SPICE.
QMP command dispatch and query-commands use the qmp-commands.hx
definition, and thus obey the #ifdeffery there. Good, because it lets
QMP clients probe for available features more easily.
query-qmp-schema uses the QAPI schema, and thus lists the
configuration-specific commands even when they're unavailable. Not so
good.
We're about to flip command dispatch and query-commands to the
non-middle-mode command registry, which uses the QAPI schema, so we
can ditch qmp-commands.hx. To avoid regressing query-commands,
arrange for commands that are suppressed with the preprocessor now to
be unregistered with that registry. This will keep them unavailable
and out of query-commands when we flip command dispatch and
query-commands to that registry, exactly as before.
This is a hack. The proper solution is to support
configuration-specific commands in the QAPI schema. Mark it FIXME.

This is a mostly-mechanical conversion that creates a new flat
union 'Netdev' QAPI type that covers all the branches of the
former 'NetClientOptions' simple union, where the branches are
now listed in a new 'NetClientDriver' enum rather than generated
from the simple union. The existence of a flat union has no
change to the command line syntax accepted for new code, and
will make it possible for a future patch to switch the QMP
command to parse a boxed union for no change to valid QMP; but
it does have some ripple effect on the C code when dealing with
the new types.
While making the conversion, note that the 'NetLegacy' type
remains unchanged: it applies only to legacy command line options,
and will not be ported to QMP, so it should remain a wrapper
around a simple union; to avoid confusion, the type named
'NetClientOptions' is now gone, and we introduce 'NetLegacyOptions'
in its place. Then, in the C code, we convert from NetLegacy to
Netdev as soon as possible, so that the bulk of the net stack
only has to deal with one QAPI type, not two. Note that since
the old legacy code always rejected 'hubport', we can just omit
that branch from the new 'NetLegacyOptions' simple union.

When qemu_set_log_filename() detects an invalid file name, it reports
an error, closes the log file (if any), and starts logging to stderr

This is wrong. Asking for an invalid log file on the command line
should be fatal. Asking for one in the monitor should fail without
messing up an existing logfile.
Fix by converting qemu_set_log_filename() to Error. Pass it

This patch add "query-gic-capabilities" but does not implement it. The
command is ARM-only. The command will return a list of GICCapability
structs that describes all GIC versions that current QEMU and system
support.
Libvirt is possibly the first consumer of this new command.
Before this patch, a libvirt user can successfully configure all kinds
of GIC devices for ARM guests, no matter whether current QEMU/kernel
supports them. If the specified GIC version/type is not supported, the
user will get an ambiguous "QEMU boot failure" error when trying to start
the VM. This is not user-friendly.
With this patch, libvirt should be able to query which type (and which
version) of GIC device is supported. Using this information, libvirt
can warn the user during configuration of guests when specified GIC
device type is not supported. Or better, we can just list those versions
that we support, and filter out the unsupported ones.
For example, if we got the query result:
{"return": [{"emulated": false, "version": 3, "kernel": true},
{"emulated": true, "version": 2, "kernel": false}]}
then it means that we support emulated GIC version 2 using:
qemu-system-aarch64 -M virt,accel=tcg,gic-version=2 ...
or KVM-accelerated GIC version 3 using:
qemu-system-aarch64 -M virt,accel=kvm,gic-version=3 ...
If we specify other explicit GIC versions rather than the above, QEMU
will not be able to boot.
The community is working on a more generic way to query these kinds of
information about valid values of machine properties. However, due to
the importance of supporting this specific use case, weecided to first
implement this ad-hoc one; then when the generic method is ready, we
can move on to that one smoothly.

This patch replaces get_ticks_per_sec() calls with the macro
NANOSECONDS_PER_SECOND. Also, as there are no callers, get_ticks_per_sec()
is then removed. This replacement improves the readability and
understandability of code.
For example,
timer_mod(fdctrl->result_timer,
qemu_clock_get_ns(QEMU_CLOCK_VIRTUAL) + (get_ticks_per_sec() / 50));
NANOSECONDS_PER_SECOND makes it obvious that qemu_clock_get_ns
matches the unit of the expression on the right side of the plus.

The QUORUM_REPORT_BAD event is emitted whenever there's an I/O error
in a child of a Quorum device. This event is emitted at a maximum rate
of 1 per second. This means that an error in one of the children will
mask errors in the other children if they happen within the same 1
second interval.
This patch modifies qapi_event_throttle_equal() so QUORUM_REPORT_BAD
events are kept separately if they come from different children.

Both error_report_err() and monitor_printf() print to the same
destination when monitor_printf() is used correctly, i.e. within an
HMP monitor. Elsewhere, monitor_printf() does nothing, while
error_report_err() reports to stderr.
Most changed functions are HMP command handlers. These should only
run within an HMP monitor. The one exception is bdrv_password_cb(),
which should also only run within an HMP monitor.
Four command handlers prefix the error message with the command name:
balloon, migrate_set_capability, migrate_set_parameter, migrate.
Pointless, drop.
Unlike monitor_printf(), error_report_err() uses the error whole
instead of just its message obtained with error_get_pretty(). This
avoids suppressing its hint (see commit 50b7b00). Example:
(qemu) device_add ivshmem,id=666
Parameter 'id' expects an identifier
Identifiers consist of letters, digits, '-', '.', '_', starting with a letter.
Try "help device_add" for more information
The "Identifiers consist of..." line is new with this patch.

When munging enum values, the fact that we were passing the entire
prefix + value through camel_to_upper() meant that enum values
spelled with CamelCase could be turned into CAMEL_CASE. However,
this provides a potential collision (both OneTwo and One-Two would
munge into ONE_TWO) for enum types, when the same two names are
valid side-by-side as QAPI member names. By changing the generation
of enum constants to always be prefix + '_' + c_name(value,
False).upper(), and ensuring that there are no case collisions (in
the next patches), we no longer have to worry about names that
would be distinct as QAPI members but collide as variant tag names,
without having to think about what munging the heuristics in
camel_to_upper() will actually perform on an enum value.
Making the change will affect enums that did not follow coding
conventions, using 'CamelCase' rather than desired 'lower-case'.
Thankfully, there are only two culprits: InputButton and ErrorClass.
We already tweaked ErrorClass to make it an alias of QapiErrorClass,
where only the alias needs changing rather than the whole tree. So
the bulk of this change is modifying INPUT_BUTTON_WHEEL_UP to the
new INPUT_BUTTON_WHEELUP (and likewise for WHEELDOWN). That part
of this commit may later need reverting if we rename the enum
constants from 'WheelUp' to 'wheel-up' as part of moving
x-input-send-event to a stable interface; but at least we have
documentation bread crumbs in place to remind us (commit 513e7cd),
and it matches the fact that SDL constants are also spelled
SDL_BUTTON_WHEELUP.

The qapi enum ErrorClass is unusual that it uses 'CamelCase' names,
contrary to our documented convention of preferring 'lower-case'.
However, this enum is entrenched in the API; we cannot change
what strings QMP outputs. Meanwhile, we want to simplify how
c_enum_const() is used to generate enum constants, by moving away
from the heuristics of camel_to_upper() to a more straightforward
c_name(N).upper() - but doing so will rename all of the ErrorClass
constants and cause churn to all client files, where the new names
are aesthetically less pleasing (ERROR_CLASS_DEVICENOTFOUND looks
like we can't make up our minds on whether to break between words).
So as always in computer science, solve the problem by some more
indirection: rename the qapi type to QapiErrorClass, and add a
new enum ErrorClass in error.h whose members are aliases of the
qapi type, but with the spelling expected elsewhere in the tree.
Then, when c_enum_const() changes the munging, we only have to
adjust the one alias spot.

At the moment get_monitor_def() returns only registers from statically
defined monitor_defs array. However there is a lot of BOOK3S SPRs
which are not in the list and cannot be printed from the monitor.
This adds a new target platform hook - target_get_monitor_def().
The hook is called if a register was not found in the static
array returned by the target_monitor_defs() hook.
The hook is only defined for POWERPC, it returns registered
SPRs and fails on unregistered ones providing the user with information
on what is actually supported on the running CPU. The register value is
saved as uint64_t as it is the biggest supported register size;
target_ulong cannot be used because of the stub - it is in a "common"
code and cannot include "cpu.h", etc; this is also why the hook prototype
is redefined in the stub instead of being included from some header.
This replaces static descriptors for GPRs, FPRs, SRs with a helper which
looks for a value in a corresponding array in the CPUPPCState.
The immediate effect is that all 32 SRs can be printed now (instead of 16);
later this can be reused for VSX or TM registers.
This replaces callbacks for MSR and XER with static descriptors in
monitor_defs as they are stored in CPUPPCState.
While we are here, this adds "cr" as a synonym of "ccr".

VSERPORT_CHANGE is emitted when the guest opens or closes a
virtio-serial port. The event's member "id" identifies the port.
When several events arrive quickly, throttling drops all but the last
of them. Because of that, a QMP client must assume that *any* port
may have changed state when it receives a VSERPORT_CHANGE event and
throttling may have happened.
Make the event more useful by throttling it for each port separately.

qapi/introspect.json defines the introspection schema. It's designed
for QMP introspection, but should do for similar uses, such as QGA.
The introspection schema does not reflect all the rules and
restrictions that apply to QAPI schemata. A valid QAPI schema has an
introspection value conforming to the introspection schema, but the
converse is not true.
Introspection lowers away a number of schema details, and makes
implicit things explicit:
* The built-in types are declared with their JSON type.
All integer types are mapped to 'int', because how many bits we use
internally is an implementation detail. It could be pressed into
external interface service as very approximate range information,
but that's a bad idea. If we need range information, we better do
it properly.
* Implicit type definitions are made explicit, and given
auto-generated names:
- Array types, named by appending "List" to the name of their
element type, like in generated C.
- The enumeration types implicitly defined by simple union types,
named by appending "Kind" to the name of their simple union type,
like in generated C.
- Types that don't occur in generated C. Their names start with ':'
so they don't clash with the user's names.
* All type references are by name.
* The struct and union types are generalized into an object type.
* Base types are flattened.
* Commands take a single argument and return a single result.
Dictionary argument or list result is an implicit type definition.
The empty object type is used when a command takes no arguments or
produces no results.
The argument is always of object type, but the introspection schema
doesn't reflect that.
The 'gen': false directive is omitted as implementation detail.
The 'success-response' directive is omitted as well for now, even
though it's not an implementation detail, because it's not used by
QMP.
* Events carry a single data value.
Implicit type definition and empty object type use, just like for
commands.
The value is of object type, but the introspection schema doesn't
reflect that.
* Types not used by commands or events are omitted.
Indirect use counts as use.
* Optional members have a default, which can only be null right now
Instead of a mandatory "optional" flag, we have an optional default.
No default means mandatory, default null means optional without
default value. Non-null is available for optional with default
(possible future extension).
* Clients should *not* look up types by name, because type names are
not ABI. Look up the command or event you're interested in, then
follow the references.
TODO Should we hide the type names to eliminate the temptation?
New generator scripts/qapi-introspect.py computes an introspection
value for its input, and generates a C variable holding it.
It can generate awfully long lines. Marked TODO.
A new test-qmp-input-visitor test case feeds its result for both
tests/qapi-schema/qapi-schema-test.json and qapi-schema.json to a
QmpInputVisitor to verify it actually conforms to the schema.
New QMP command query-qmp-schema takes its return value from that
variable. Its reply is some 85KiBytes for me right now.
If this turns out to be too much, we have a couple of options:
* We can use shorter names in the JSON. Not the QMP style.
* Optionally return the sub-schema for commands and events given as
arguments.
Right now qmp_query_schema() sends the string literal computed by
qmp-introspect.py. To compute sub-schema at run time, we'd have to
duplicate parts of qapi-introspect.py in C. Unattractive.
* Let clients cache the output of query-qmp-schema.
It changes only on QEMU upgrades, i.e. rarely. Provide a command
query-qmp-schema-hash. Clients can have a cache indexed by hash,
and re-query the schema only when they don't have it cached. Even
simpler: put the hash in the QMP greeting.

The traditional QMP command handler interface
int qmp_FOO(Monitor *mon, const QDict *params, QObject **ret_data);
doesn't provide for returning an Error object. Instead, the handler
is expected to stash it in the monitor with qerror_report().
When we rebased QMP on top of QAPI, we didn't change this interface.
Instead, commit 776574d introduced "middle mode" as a temporary aid
for converting existing QMP commands to QAPI one by one. More than
three years later, we're still using it.
Middle mode has two effects:
* Instead of the native input marshallers
static void qmp_marshal_input_FOO(QDict *, QObject **, Error **)
it generates input marshallers conforming to the traditional QMP
command handler interface.
* It suppresses generation of code to register them with
qmp_register_command()
This permits giving them internal linkage.
As long as we need qmp-commands.hx, we can't use the registry behind
qmp_register_command(), so the latter has to stay for now.
The former has to go to get rid of qerror_report(). Changing all QMP
commands to fit the QAPI mold in one go was impractical back when we
started, but by now there are just a few stragglers left:
do_qmp_capabilities(), qmp_qom_set(), qmp_qom_get(), qmp_object_add(),
qmp_netdev_add(), do_device_add().
Switch middle mode to generate native input marshallers, and adapt the
stragglers. Simplifies both the monitor code and the stragglers.
Rename do_qmp_capabilities() to qmp_capabilities(), and
do_device_add() to qmp_device_add, because that's how QMP command

The only remaining user in qemu-option.c is qemu_opts_parse(). Is it
used in QMP context? If not, we can simply replace
qerror_report_err() by error_report_err().
The uses in qemu-img.c, qemu-io.c, qemu-nbd.c and under tests/ are
clearly not in QMP context.
The uses in vl.c aren't either, because the only QMP command handlers
there are qmp_query_status() and qmp_query_machines(), and they don't
call it.
Remaining uses:
* drive_def(): Command line -drive and such, HMP drive_add and pci_add
* hmp_chardev_add(): HMP chardev-add
* monitor_parse_command(): HMP core
* tmp_config_parse(): Command line -tpmdev
* net_host_device_add(): HMP host_net_add
* net_client_parse(): Command line -net and -netdev
* qemu_global_option(): Command line -global
* vnc_parse_func(): Command line -display, -vnc, default display, HMP
change, QMP change. Bummer.
* qemu_pci_hot_add_nic(): HMP pci_add
* usb_net_init(): Command line -usbdevice, HMP usb_add
Propagate errors through qemu_opts_parse(). Create a convenience
function qemu_opts_parse_noisily() that passes errors to
error_report_err(). Switch all non-QMP users outside tests to it.
That leaves vnc_parse_func(). Propagate errors through it. Since I'm
touching it anyway, rename it to vnc_parse().

The monitor currently has one helper, mon_get_cpu() which will return
an env pointer. The target specific users of this API want an env, but
all the target agnostic users really just want the cpu pointer. These
users then need to use the target-specifically defined ENV_GET_CPU to
navigate back up to the CPU from the ENV. Split the API for the two
uses cases to remove all need for ENV_GET_CPU.

The asynchronous monitor command interface goes back to commit 940cc30
(Jan 2010). Added a third case to command execution. The hope back
then according to the commit message was that all commands get
converted to the asynchronous interface, killing off the other two
cases. Didn't happen.
The initial asynchronous commands balloon and info balloon were
converted back to synchronous long ago (commit 96637bc and d72f32),
with commit messages calling the asynchronous interface "not fully
working" and "deprecated". The only other user went away in commit
3b5704b.
New code generally uses synchronous commands and asynchronous events.
What exactly is still "not fully working" with asynchronous commands?
Well, here's a bug that defeats actual asynchronous use pretty
reliably: the reply's ID is wrong (and has always been wrong) unless
you use the command synchronously! To reproduce, we need an
asynchronous command, so we have to go back before commit 3b5704b.
Run QEMU with spice:
$ qemu-system-x86_64 -nodefaults -S -spice port=5900,disable-ticketing -qmp stdio
{"QMP": {"version": {"qemu": {"micro": 94, "minor": 2, "major": 2}, "package": ""}, "capabilities": []}}
Connect a spice client in another terminal:
$ remote-viewer spice://localhost:5900
Set up a migration destination dummy in a third terminal:
$ socat TCP-LISTEN:12345 STDIO
Now paste the following into the QMP monitor:
{ "execute": "qmp_capabilities", "id": "i0" }
{ "execute": "client_migrate_info", "id": "i1", "arguments": { "protocol": "spice", "hostname": "localhost", "port": 12345 } }
{ "execute": "query-kvm", "id": "i2" }
Produces two replies immediately, one to qmp_capabilities, and one to
query-kvm:
{"return": {}, "id": "i0"}
{"return": {"enabled": false, "present": true}, "id": "i2"}
Both are correct. Two lines of debug output from libspice-server not
shown.
Now EOF socat's standard input to make it close the connection. This
makes the asynchronous client_migrate_info complete. It replies:
{"return": {}}
Bug: "id": "i1" is missing. Two lines of debug output from
libspice-server not shown. Cherry on top: storage for the missing ID
is leaked.
Get rid of this stuff before somebody hurts himself with it.

Live migration with spice works like this today:
(1) client_migrate_info monitor cmd
(2) spice server notifies client, client connects to target host.
(3) qemu waits until spice client connect is finished.
(4) send over vmstate (i.e. main part of live migration).
(5) spice handover to target host.
(3) is implemented by making client_migrate_info a async monitor
command. This is the only async monitor command we have.
The original reason to implement this dance was that qemu did not accept
new tcp connections while the incoming migration was running, so (2) and
(4) could not be done in parallel. That issue was fixed long ago though.
Qemu version 1.3.0 (released Dec 2012) and newer happily accept tcp
connects while the incoming migration runs.
Time to drop step (3). This patch does exactly that, by making the
monitor command synchronous and removing the code needed to handle the
async monitor command in ui/spice-core.c

2ed1ebcf6 "timer: replace time() with QEMU_CLOCK_HOST" broke compile
when configured with --enable-profiler. Turned out the profiler has been
broken for a while.
This does s/qemu_time/tcg_time/ as the profiler only works in a TCG mode.
This also fixes the compile error.
This changes profile_getclock() to return nanoseconds rather than
CPU ticks as the "profile" HMP command prints seconds and there is no
platform-independent way to get ticks-per-second rate.
Since TCG is quite slow and get_clock() returns nanoseconds (fine
enough), this should not affect precision much.
This removes unused qemu_time_start and tlb_flush_time.

To complement qdev's bus-oriented info qtree, info qom-tree
prints a hierarchical view of the QOM composition tree.
By default, the machine composition tree is shown. This can be overriden
by supplying a path argument, such as "info qom-tree /".

monitor_read_bdrv_key_start() does several things:
1. If no key is needed, call completion_cb() and succeed
2. If we're in QMP context, call qerror_report_err() and fail
3. Start reading the key in the monitor.
This is two things too many. Inline 1. and 2. into its callers
monitor_read_block_device_key() and usb_msd_realize_storage().
Since monitor_read_block_device_key() only ever runs in HMP context,
drop 2. there.
The next commit will clean up the result in usb_msd_realize_storage().

monitor_handle_fd_param() is a wrapper around
monitor_handle_fd_param2() that feeds errors to qerror_report_err()
instead of returning them. qerror_report_err() is inappropriate in
many contexts. monitor_handle_fd_param() looks simpler than
monitor_handle_fd_param2(), which tempts use. Remove the temptation:
drop the wrapper and open-code the (trivial) error handling instead.
Replace the open-coded qerror_report_err() by error_report_err() in
places that already use error_report(). Turns out that's everywhere.
While there, rename monitor_handle_fd_param2() to monitor_fd_param().

The monitor code for doing a memory_dump() was using ld*_raw() to do
target-CPU accesses out of a local buf[] array. The correct functions
for this purpose are ld*_p(), which take a host pointer, rather than
ld*_raw(), which take an integer representing a guest address and
are somewhat meaningless in softmmu configurations. Nobody noticed
because for softmmu the _raw functions are the same as ldl_p but
with some extra casts thrown in. Switch to using the correct functions
instead.

The commits:
- 6a1fa9f5 (monitor: add del completion for peripheral device)
- 66e56b13 (qdev: add qdev_build_hotpluggable_device_list helper)
cause a QEMU crash when trying to use HMP device_del auto-completion.
It can be easily reproduced by:
<qemu-bin> -enable-kvm ~/images/fedora.qcow2 -monitor stdio -device virtio-net-pci,id=vnet
(qemu) device_del
/home/mapfelba/git/upstream/qemu/hw/core/qdev.c:941:qdev_build_hotpluggable_device_list: Object 0x7f6ce04e4fe0 is not an instance of type device
Aborted (core dumped)
The root cause is qdev_build_hotpluggable_device_list going recursively over
all peripherals and their children assuming all are devices. It doesn't work
since PCI devices have at least on child which is a memory region (bus master).
Solved by observing that all devices appear as direct children of
/machine/peripheral container. No need of going recursively
over all the children.

have sockets (akita, borzoi, connex, mainstone, spitz, terrier, tosa,
verdex, z2), the only card is the DSCM-1xxxx Hitachi Microdrive (qdev
"microdrive"), and it is only inserted during machine init, if ever.
So this command doesn't really tell anybody anything new so far.
Moreover, pcmcia_socket_unregister() has a use-after-free bug, flagged
by Coverity. Has never been used, because there has never been code
to eject a PCMCIA card.
