As kmem_caches share the same properties (size, allocation/free behaviour) for all potential devices, we can use global caches. While this potential has worse fragmentation behaviour (one can argue that different devices would have different activity lifetimes, but you can also argue that activity is temporal across the system) it is the default behaviour of the system at large to amalgamate matching caches. The benefit for us is much reduced pointer dancing along the frequent allocation paths. v2: Defer shrinking until after a global grace period for futureproofing multiple consumers of the slab caches, similar to the current strategy for avoiding shrinking too early. Linux kernel
============
There are several guides for kernel developers and users. These guides can
be rendered in a number of formats, like HTML and PDF. Please read
Documentation/admin-guide/README.rst first.
In order to build the documentation, use ``make htmldocs`` or
``make pdfdocs``. The formatted documentation can also be read online at:
https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/
There are various text files in the Documentation/ subdirectory,
several of them using the Restructured Text markup notation.
Please read the Documentation/process/changes.rst file, as it contains the
requirements for building and running the kernel, and information about
the problems which may result by upgrading your kernel.
