Viresh Kumar 6ffae8c06f cpufreq: Set cpufreq_cpu_data to NULL before putting kobject
In __cpufreq_remove_dev_finish(), per-cpu 'cpufreq_cpu_data' needs
to be cleared before calling kobject_put(&policy->kobj) and under
cpufreq_driver_lock. Otherwise, if someone else calls cpufreq_cpu_get()
in parallel with it, they can obtain a non-NULL policy from that after
kobject_put(&policy->kobj) was executed.

Consider this case:

Thread A				Thread B
cpufreq_cpu_get()
  acquire cpufreq_driver_lock
  read-per-cpu cpufreq_cpu_data
					kobject_put(&policy->kobj);
  kobject_get(&policy->kobj);
					...
					per_cpu(&cpufreq_cpu_data, cpu) = NULL

And this will result in a warning like this one:

The actual code flow is as follows:

 Thread A: Workqueue: kacpi_notify

 acpi_processor_notify()
   acpi_processor_ppc_has_changed()
         cpufreq_update_policy()
           cpufreq_cpu_get()
             kobject_get()

 Thread B: xenbus_thread()

 xenbus_thread()
   msg->u.watch.handle->callback()
     handle_vcpu_hotplug_event()
       vcpu_hotplug()
         cpu_down()
           __cpu_notify(CPU_POST_DEAD..)
             cpufreq_cpu_callback()
               __cpufreq_remove_dev_finish()
                 cpufreq_policy_put_kobj()
                   kobject_put()

cpufreq_cpu_get() gets the policy from per-cpu variable cpufreq_cpu_data
under cpufreq_driver_lock, and once it gets a valid policy it expects it
to not be freed until cpufreq_cpu_put() is called.

But the race happens when another thread puts the kobject first and updates
cpufreq_cpu_data before or later. And so the first thread gets a valid policy
structure and before it does kobject_get() on it, the second one has already
done kobject_put().

Fix this by setting cpufreq_cpu_data to NULL before putting the kobject and that
too under locks.

Arnd Bergmann 8b2b4a4e53 cpufreq: exynos: allow modular build
The exynos cpufreq driver code recently gained a dependency on the
cooling code, which may be a loadable module. This breaks an ARM
allmodconfig build:

drivers/built-in.o: In function `exynos_cpufreq_probe':
:(.text+0x1748e8): undefined reference to `of_cpufreq_cooling_register'

To avoid this problem, change cpufreq Kconfig to allow the drivers
to be loadable modules as well and enforce a dependency on the
thermal module.

This change, in order to allow module builds on this cpufreq
driver, properly constructs the driver into a single module,
instead of several modules. The change also keeps the proper
platform dependency, and therefore, it wont load in platforms
that are not supposed to be loaded. The user will be able to
build the support for all platforms, or select which platforms
(s)he wants (as originally), except that now it can be a module,
instead.

Besides, it will still keep the driver only on those configs
that expect it to be on. And it won't compile/load on platforms
that it is not supposed to. It brings the config ARM_EXYNOS_CPU_FREQ_BOOST_SW
closer to this driver, so it looks better in the menuconfig.

We intentionally change ARM_EXYNOS5440_CPUFREQ to be tristate too, to
avoid future troubles.

Viresh Kumar 490285c65e cpufreq: stats: drop unnecessary locking
There is no possibility of any race on updating last_index, trans_table or
total_trans as these are updated only by cpufreq_stat_notifier_trans() which
will be called sequentially.

The only place where locking is still relevant is: cpufreq_stats_update(), which
updates time_in_state and last_time. This can be called by two thread in
parallel, that may result in races.

The two threads being:
- sysfs read of time_in_state
- and frequency transition that calls cpufreq_stat_notifier_trans().

Remove locking from the first case mentioned above.

Viresh Kumar e73476949c cpufreq: stats: don't update stats on false notifiers
We need to call cpufreq_stats_update() to update 'time_in_state' for the last
frequency. This is achieved by calling it from cpufreq_stat_notifier_trans(),
which is called after frequency transition.

But if we detect that the cpu's frequency haven't really changed and its a false
POSTCHANGE notification, we don't really need to update time_in_state.

It wouldn't cause any harm in calling cpufreq_stats_update() but we can avoid
calling it here and call it when the frequency really changes. The result will
be the same but more efficient.

cpufreq_stats_update() updates time_in_state and nothing else. It should ideally
be updated only in two cases:
- User requested for the current value of time_in_state.
- We have switched states and so need to update time for the last state.

Currently, we are also doing this while user asks for the transition table of
frequencies. It wouldn't do any harm, but no good as well. Its useless here.

Even if we pass a cpu number to cpufreq_stats_update(), it reads the per-cpu

- First getting the cpu number to pass to cpufreq_stats_update(), stat->cpu.

Doug Anderson 90de2a4aa9 cpufreq: suspend cpufreq governors on shutdown
We should stop cpufreq governors when we shut down the system. If we
don't do this, we can end up with this deadlock:

1. cpufreq governor may be running on a CPU other than CPU0.
2. In machine_restart() we call smp_send_stop() which stops CPUs.
   If one of these CPUs was actively running a cpufreq governor
   then it may have the mutex / spinlock needed to access the main
   PMIC in the system (perhaps over I2C)
3. If a machine needs access to the main PMIC in order to shutdown
   then it will never get it since the mutex was lost when the other
   CPU stopped.
4. We'll hang (possibly eventually hitting the hard lockup detector).

Let's avoid the problem by stopping the cpufreq governor at shutdown,
which is a sensible thing to do anyway.

SRCU is not necessary to be compiled by default in all cases. For tinification

The current patch tries to make compiling SRCU optional by introducing a new

use of SRCU are selected.

If we do not select CONFIG_SRCU, srcu.o will not be compiled at all.

The root cause is a race conditon -- cpufreq core and acpi-cpufreq driver
were initiated, but cpufreq_governor wasn't and _PPC changed notification
happened, __cpufreq_governor() was called within acpi_os_execute_deferred
kernel thread context.

To fix this panic issue, add pointer checking code in __cpufreq_governor()
before pointer policy->governor is to be dereferenced.

Viresh Kumar 9a004428d7 cpufreq-dt: register cooling device from ->ready() callback
Currently we are calling of_cpufreq_cooling_register() from ->init() callback.
At this point of time cpufreq driver's policy isn't completely ready to be used
as few of its fields/structure/pointers aren't yet initialized.

Because of_cpufreq_cooling_register() tries to access policy with help of
cpufreq_cpu_get() and then tries to get freq-table as well, these calls fail.

To fix this, register the cooling device after the policy is ready to be used.
And the right callback for it is the newly added ->ready() one.

Viresh Kumar 7c45cf31b3 cpufreq: Introduce ->ready() callback for cpufreq drivers
Currently there is no callback for cpufreq drivers which is called once the
policy is ready to be used. There are some requirements where such a callback is
required.

One of them is registering a cooling device with the help of
of_cpufreq_cooling_register(). This routine tries to get 'struct cpufreq_policy'
for CPUs which isn't yet initialed at the time ->init() is called and so we face
issues while registering the cooling device.

Because we can't register cooling device from ->init(), we need a callback that
is called after the policy is ready to be used and hence we introduce ->ready()
callback.

Viresh Kumar d3a10c1475 cpufreq-dt: pass 'policy->related_cpus' to of_cpufreq_cooling_register()
The second parameter of of_cpufreq_cooling_register() should be the CPUs to
which the frequency constraint will apply. As the cpufreq-dt driver now supports
platforms with multiple 'struct cpufreq_policy' instances (i.e. > 1 clock

Viresh Kumar f41f4815f8 cpufreq: Kconfig: Remove architecture specific menu entries
CPUFreq driver's Kconfig entries are added in Kconfig.<arch> files and they are
all included from the main Kconfig file using a menu entry. This creates another
level of (unnecessary) hierarchy within the menuconfig entries.

The problem occurs when there are drivers usable across architectures. Either
their config entry is duplicated in all the supported architectures or is put
into the main Kconfig entry. With the later one, we have menuconfig entries for
drivers at two levels then.

Fix these issues by getting rid of another level of menuconfig hierarchy and
populate all drivers within the main cpufreq menu. To clearly distinguish where
the drivers start from, also add a comment that will appear in menuconfig.

Lenny Szubowicz 7e7e8fe698 cpufreq: pcc: Enable autoload of pcc-cpufreq for ACPI processors
The pcc-cpufreq driver is not automatically loaded on systems where
the platform's power management setting requires this driver.
Instead, on those systems no CPU frequency driver is registered and
active.

Make the autoloading matching criteria for loading the pcc-cpufreq
driver the same as done in acpi-cpufreq by commit c655affbd5
("ACPI / cpufreq: Add ACPI processor device IDs to acpi-cpufreq").

x86 CPU frequency drivers are now typically autoloaded by specifying
MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE entries and x86cpu model specific matching.
But pcc-cpufreq was omitted when acpi-cpufreq and other drivers were
changed to use this approach.

Both acpi-cpufreq and pcc-cpufreq depend on a distinct and mutually
exclusive set of ACPI methods which are not directly tied to specific
processor model numbers. Both of these drivers have init routines
which look for their required ACPI methods. As a result, only the
appropriate driver registers as the cpu frequency driver and the other
one ends up being unloaded.

Tested on various systems where acpi-cpufreq, intel_pstate, and
pcc-cpufreq are the expected cpu frequency drivers.

Vince Hsu 619c144c84 cpufreq: respect the min/max settings from user space
When the user space tries to set scaling_(max|min)_freq through
sysfs, the cpufreq_set_policy() asks other driver's opinions
for the max/min frequencies. Some device drivers, like Tegra
CPU EDP which is not upstreamed yet though, may constrain the
CPU maximum frequency dynamically because of board design.
So if the user space access happens and some driver is capping
the cpu frequency at the same time, the user_policy->(max|min)
is overridden by the capped value, and that's not expected by
the user space. And if the user space is not invoked again,
the CPU will always be capped by the user_policy->(max|min)
even no drivers limit the CPU frequency any more.

This patch preserves the user specified min/max settings, so that
every time the cpufreq policy is updated, the new max/min can
be re-evaluated correctly based on the user's expection and
the present device drivers' status.

Pull ACPI and power management updates from Rafael Wysocki:
 "This is material that didn't make it to my 3.18-rc1 pull request for

Dirk Brandewie d022a65ed2 intel_pstate: Correct BYT VID values.
Using a VID value that is not high enough for the requested P state can
cause machine checks. Add a ceiling function to ensure calulated VIDs
with fractional values are set to the next highest integer VID value.

The algorythm for calculating the non-trubo VID from the BIOS writers
guide is:
 vid_ratio = (vid_max - vid_min) / (max_pstate - min_pstate)
 vid = ceiling(vid_min + (req_pstate - min_pstate) * vid_ratio)

Pali Rohár 36b4bed5cd cpufreq: intel_pstate: Fix setting max_perf_pct in performance policy
Code which changes policy to powersave changes also max_policy_pct based on
max_freq. Code which change max_perf_pct has upper limit base on value
max_policy_pct. When policy is changing from powersave back to performance
then max_policy_pct is not changed. Which means that changing max_perf_pct is
not possible to high values if max_freq was too low in powersave policy.

Test case:

$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_min_freq
800000
$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq
3300000
$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
performance
$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/max_perf_pct
100

$ echo powersave > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
$ echo 800000 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq
$ echo 20 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/max_perf_pct

$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
powersave
$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq
800000
$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/max_perf_pct
20

$ echo performance > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
$ echo 3300000 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq
$ echo 100 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/max_perf_pct

$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
performance
$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq
3300000
$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/max_perf_pct
24

And now intel_pstate driver allows to set maximal value for max_perf_pct based
on max_policy_pct which is 24 for previous powersave max_freq 800000.

This patch will set default value for max_policy_pct when setting policy to
performance so it will allow to set also max value for max_perf_pct.

This commit extends the cpufreq_driver structure with an additional

of a cpufreq driver to pass additional custom information to the
driver itself.

A new function called cpufreq_get_driver_data() is added to allow a

needed from a cpufreq_policy->init() callback, which does not have

Linus Torvalds c0fa2373f8 The clk tree changes for 3.18 are dominated by clock drivers. Mostly
fixes and enhancements to existing drivers as well as new drivers. This
 tag contains a bit more arch code than I usually take due to some OMAP2+
 changes. Additionally it contains the restart notifier handlers which
 are merged as a dependency into several trees.

 The PXA changes are the only messy part. Due to having a stable tree I
 had to revert one patch and follow up with one more fix near the tip of
 this tag. Some dead code is introduced but it will soon become live code
 after 3.18-rc1 is released as the rest of the PXA family is converted
 over to the common clock framework.

 Another trend in this tag is that multiple vendors have started to push
 the complexity of changing their CPU frequency into the clock driver,
 whereas this used to be done in CPUfreq drivers.

 Changes to the clk core include a generic gpio-clock type and a
 clk_set_phase() function added to the top-level clk.h api. Due to some
 confusion on the fbdev mailing list the kernel boot parameters
 documentation was updated to further explain the clk_ignore_unused
 parameter, which is often required by users of the simplefb driver.
 Finally some fixes to the locking around the clock debugfs stuff was
 done to prevent deadlocks when interacting with other subsystems.

    suspend_device_irqs() and in that mode the first interrupt
    will abort system suspend in progress or wake up the system
    if already in suspend-to-idle (or equivalent) without executing
    any interrupt handlers. Among other things that eliminates the
    wakeup-related motivation to use the IRQF_NO_SUSPEND interrupt
    flag with interrupts which don't really need it and should not
    use it (Thomas Gleixner and Rafael J Wysocki).

  - Switch over ACPI to handling wakeup interrupts with the help
    of the new mechanism introduced by the above IRQ core rework
    (Rafael J Wysocki).

  - Rework the core generic PM domains code to eliminate code that's
    not used, add DT support and add a generic mechanism by which
    devices can be added to PM domains automatically during
    enumeration (Ulf Hansson, Geert Uytterhoeven and Tomasz Figa).

  - Add debugfs-based mechanics for debugging generic PM domains
    (Maciej Matraszek).

  - ACPICA update to upstream version 20140828. Included are updates
    related to the SRAT and GTDT tables and the _PSx methods are in
    the METHOD_NAME list now (Bob Moore and Hanjun Guo).

  - Add _OSI("Darwin") support to the ACPI core (unfortunately, that
    can't really be done in a straightforward way) to prevent
    Thunderbolt from being turned off on Apple systems after boot
    (or after resume from system suspend) and rework the ACPI Smart
    Battery Subsystem (SBS) driver to work correctly with Apple
    platforms (Matthew Garrett and Andreas Noever).

  - ACPI LPSS (Low-Power Subsystem) driver update cleaning up the
    code, adding support for 133MHz I2C source clock on Intel Baytrail
    to it and making it avoid using UART RTS override with Auto Flow
    Control (Heikki Krogerus).

  - ACPI backlight updates removing the video_set_use_native_backlight
    quirk which is not necessary any more, making the code check the
    list of output devices returned by the _DOD method to avoid
    creating acpi_video interfaces that won't work and adding a quirk
    for Lenovo Ideapad Z570 (Hans de Goede, Aaron Lu and Stepan Bujnak).

  - New Win8 ACPI OSI quirks for some Dell laptops (Edward Lin).

  - Assorted ACPI code cleanups (Fabian Frederick, Rasmus Villemoes,
    Sudip Mukherjee, Yijing Wang, and Zhang Rui).

  - cpufreq core updates and cleanups (Viresh Kumar, Preeti U Murthy,
    Rasmus Villemoes).

  - cpufreq driver updates: cpufreq-cpu0/cpufreq-dt (driver name
    change among other things), ppc-corenet, powernv (Viresh Kumar,
    Preeti U Murthy, Shilpasri G Bhat, Lucas Stach).

  - cpuidle support for DT-based idle states infrastructure, new
    ARM64 cpuidle driver, cpuidle core cleanups (Lorenzo Pieralisi,
    Rasmus Villemoes).

  - ARM big.LITTLE cpuidle driver updates: support for DT-based
    initialization and Exynos5800 compatible string (Lorenzo Pieralisi,
    Kevin Hilman).

  - Rework of the test_suspend kernel command line argument and
    a new trace event for console resume (Srinivas Pandruvada,
    Todd E Brandt).

  - Second attempt to optimize swsusp_free() (hibernation core) to
    make it avoid going through all PFNs which may be way too slow on
    some systems (Joerg Roedel).

  - devfreq updates (Paul Bolle, Punit Agrawal, Ãrjan Eide).

  - rockchip-io Adaptive Voltage Scaling (AVS) driver and AVS
    entry update in MAINTAINERS (Heiko Stübner, Kevin Hilman).

  - PM core fix related to clock management (Geert Uytterhoeven).

  - PM core's sysfs code cleanup (Johannes Berg).

Merge tag 'pm+acpi-3.18-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm

Pull ACPI and power management updates from Rafael Wysocki:
 "Features-wise, to me the most important this time is a rework of
  wakeup interrupts handling in the core that makes them work
  consistently across all of the available sleep states, including
  suspend-to-idle. Many thanks to Thomas Gleixner for his help with
  this work.

  Second is an update of the generic PM domains code that has been in
  need of some care for quite a while. Unused code is being removed, DT
  support is being added and domains are now going to be attached to
  devices in bus type code in analogy with the ACPI PM domain. The
  majority of work here was done by Ulf Hansson who also has been the
  most active developer this time.

  Apart from this we have a traditional ACPICA update, this time to
  upstream version 20140828 and a few ACPI wakeup interrupts handling
  patches on top of the general rework mentioned above. There also are
  several cpufreq commits including renaming the cpufreq-cpu0 driver to
  cpufreq-dt, as this is what implements generic DT-based cpufreq
  support, and a new DT-based idle states infrastructure for cpuidle.

  In addition to that, the ACPI LPSS driver is updated, ACPI support for
  Apple machines is improved, a few bugs are fixed and a few cleanups
  are made all over.

  Finally, the Adaptive Voltage Scaling (AVS) subsystem now has a tree
  maintained by Kevin Hilman that will be merged through the PM tree.

  Numbers-wise, the generic PM domains update takes the lead this time
  with 32 non-merge commits, second is cpufreq (15 commits) and the 3rd
  place goes to the wakeup interrupts handling rework (13 commits).

  Specifics:

   - Rework the handling of wakeup IRQs by the IRQ core such that all of
     them will be switched over to "wakeup" mode in suspend_device_irqs()
     and in that mode the first interrupt will abort system suspend in
     progress or wake up the system if already in suspend-to-idle (or
     equivalent) without executing any interrupt handlers. Among other
     things that eliminates the wakeup-related motivation to use the
     IRQF_NO_SUSPEND interrupt flag with interrupts which don't really
     need it and should not use it (Thomas Gleixner and Rafael Wysocki)

   - Switch over ACPI to handling wakeup interrupts with the help of the
     new mechanism introduced by the above IRQ core rework (Rafael Wysocki)

   - Rework the core generic PM domains code to eliminate code that's
     not used, add DT support and add a generic mechanism by which

Linus Torvalds 4a4743e840 ARM: SoC non-critical bug fixes for 3.18
These are bug fixes for harmless problems that were not important
 enough to get fixed in 3.17. The majority of these are OMAP specific,
 but there are also a couple for Marvell mvebu, cns3xxx, and others,
 as well as some updates for the MAINTAINERS file.

 In particular, Robert Jarzmik and Daniel Mack now volunteered to help
 out maintaining the PXA platform, Krzysztof Halasa took over the
 cns3xxx platform, Carlo Caione is the maintainer for the new Amlogic
 meson platform, and Matthias Brugger is now listed for the mediatek
 platform he recently contributed.

If cpufreq_generic_init() fails we jump into the resource

resulting a double decrement of the refcount.

Fix this by calling of_node_put() only after we are sure
