The error message produced by the ext4_ext_rm_leaf() when we are
removing blocks which accidentally ends up inside the existing extent,
is not very helpful, because we would like to also know which extent did
we collide with.
This commit changes the error message to get us also the information
about the extent we are colliding with.

This commit rewrites ext4 punch hole implementation to use
ext4_ext_remove_space() instead of its home gown way of doing this via
ext4_ext_map_blocks(). There are several reasons for changing this.
Firstly it is quite non obvious that punching hole needs to
ext4_ext_map_blocks() to punch a hole, especially given that this
function should map blocks, not unmap it. It also required a lot of new
code in ext4_ext_map_blocks().
Secondly the design of it is not very effective. The reason is that we
are trying to punch out blocks in ext4_ext_punch_hole() in opposite
direction than in ext4_ext_rm_leaf() which causes the ext4_ext_rm_leaf()
to iterate through the whole tree from the end to the start to find the
requested extent for every extent we are going to punch out.
And finally the current implementation does not use the existing code,
but bring a lot of new code, which is IMO unnecessary since there
already is some infrastructure we can use. Specifically
ext4_ext_remove_space().
This commit changes ext4_ext_remove_space() to accept 'end' parameter so
we can not only truncate to the end of file, but also remove the space
in the middle of the file (punch a hole). Moreover, because the last
block to punch out, might be in the middle of the extent, we have to
split the extent at 'end + 1' so ext4_ext_rm_leaf() can easily either
remove the whole fist part of split extent, or change its size.
ext4_ext_remove_space() is then used to actually remove the space
(extents) from within the hole, instead of ext4_ext_map_blocks().
Note that this also fix the issue with punch hole, where we would forget
to remove empty index blocks from the extent tree, resulting in double
free block error and file system corruption. This is simply because we
now use different code path, where this problem does not exist.
This has been tested with fsx running for several days and xfstests,
plus xfstest #251 with '-o discard' run on the loop image (which
converts discard requestes into punch hole to the backing file). All of
it on 1K and 4K file system block size.

vfs: use 'unsigned long' accesses for dcache name comparison and hashing
This does the name hashing and lookup using word-sized accesses when
that is efficient, namely on x86 (although any little-endian machine
with good unaligned accesses would do).
It does very much depend on little-endian logic, but it's a very hot
couple of functions under some real loads, and this patch improves the
performance of __d_lookup_rcu() and link_path_walk() by up to about 30%.
Giving a 10% improvement on some very pathname-heavy benchmarks.
Because we do make unaligned accesses past the filename, the
optimization is disabled when CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC is active, and we
effectively depend on the fact that on x86 we don't really ever have the
last page of usable RAM followed immediately by any IO memory (due to
ACPI tables, BIOS buffer areas etc).
Some of the bit operations we do are a bit "subtle". It's commented,
but you do need to really think about the code. Or just consider it
black magic.
Thanks to people on G+ for some of the optimized bit tricks.
For some odd historical reason, the final mixing round for the dentry
cache hash table lookup had an insane "xor with big constant" logic. In
two places.
The big constant that is being xor'ed is GOLDEN_RATIO_PRIME, which is a
fairly random-looking number that is designed to be *multiplied* with so
that the bits get spread out over a whole long-word.
But xor'ing with it is insane. It doesn't really even change the hash -
it really only shifts the hash around in the hash table. To make
matters worse, the insane big constant is different on 32-bit and 64-bit
builds, even though the name hash bits we use are always 32-bit (and the
bits from the pointer we mix in effectively are too).
It's all total voodoo programming, in other words.
Now, some testing and analysis of the hash chains shows that the rest of
the hash function seems to be fairly good. It does pick the right bits
of the parent dentry pointer, for example, and while it's generally a
bad idea to use an xor to mix down the upper bits (because if there is a
repeating pattern, the xor can cause "destructive interference"), it
seems to not have been a disaster.
For example, replacing the hash with the normal "hash_long()" code (that
uses the GOLDEN_RATIO_PRIME constant correctly, btw) actually just makes
the hash worse. The hand-picked hash knew which bits of the pointer had
the highest entropy, and hash_long() ends up mixing bits less optimally
at least in some trivial tests.
So the hash function overall seems fine, it just has that really odd
"shift result around by a constant xor".
So get rid of the silly xor, and replace the down-mixing of the bits
with an add instead of an xor that tends to not have the same kind of
destructive interference issues. Some stats on the resulting hash
chains shows that they look statistically identical before and after,
but the code is simpler and no longer makes you go "WTF?".
Also, the incoming hash really is just "unsigned int", not a long, and
there's no real point to worry about the high 26 bits of the dentry
pointer for the 64-bit case, because they are all going to be identical
anyway.
So also change the hashing to be done in the more natural 'unsigned int'
that is the real size of the actual hashed data anyway.

Commit 28d82dc1c4 ("epoll: limit paths") that I did to limit the
number of possible wakeup paths in epoll is causing a few applications
to longer work (dovecot for one).
The original patch is really about limiting the amount of epoll nesting
(since epoll fds can be attached to other fds). Thus, we probably can
allow an unlimited number of paths of depth 1. My current patch limits
it at 1000. And enforce the limits on paths that have a greater depth.

Using user credentials for RENEW calls will fail when the user
credentials have expired.
To avoid this, try using the machine credentials when making RENEW
calls. If no machine credentials have been set, fall back to using user
credentials as before.

- Fix a race in which NFS_I(inode)->commits_outstanding could potentially
go to zero (triggering a call to nfs_commit_clear_lock()) before we're
done sending out all the commit RPC calls.
- If nfs_commitdata_alloc fails, there is no reason why we shouldn't
try to send off all the commits-to-ds.
- Simplify the error handling.
- Change pnfs_commit_list() to always return either
PNFS_ATTEMPTED or PNFS_NOT_ATTEMPTED.

Move more pnfs-isms out of the generic commit code.
Bugfixes:
- filelayout_scan_commit_lists doesn't need to get/put the lseg.
In fact since it is run under the inode->i_lock, the lseg_put()
can deadlock.
- Ensure that we distinguish between what needs to be done for
commit-to-data server and what needs to be done for commit-to-MDS
using the new flag PG_COMMIT_TO_DS. Otherwise we may end up calling
put_lseg() on a bucket for a struct nfs_page that got written
through the MDS.
- Fix a case where we were using list_del() on an nfs_page->wb_list
instead of list_del_init().
- filelayout_initiate_commit needs to call filelayout_commit_release
on error instead of the mds_ops->rpc_release(). Otherwise it won't
clear the commit lock.
Cleanups:
- Let the files layout manage the commit lists for the pNFS case.
Don't expose stuff like pnfs_choose_commit_list, and the fact
that the commit buckets hold references to the layout segment
in common code.
- Cast out the put_lseg() calls for the struct nfs_read/write_data->lseg
into the pNFS layer from whence they came.
- Let the pNFS layer manage the NFS_INO_PNFS_COMMIT bit.

When writing files to afs I sometimes hit a BUG:

The cause is:
ASSERT(skb_queue_empty(&call->rx_queue));
Looking at a tcpdump of the session the abort happens because we
are exceeding our disk quota:
rx abort fs reply store-data error diskquota exceeded (32)
So the abort error is valid. We hit the BUG because we haven't
freed all the resources for the call.
By freeing any skbs in call->rx_queue before calling afs_free_call
we avoid hitting leaking memory and avoid hitting the BUG.

This can fail after the system has been running for some time as it
is a high order allocation. Add a fallback to vmalloc so that it
doesn't require contiguous memory and so won't randomly fail on
files with large extent lists.

allocation. Add a fallback to vmalloc so that it doesn't require

When we get concurrent lookups of the same inode that is not in the
per-AG inode cache, there is a race condition that triggers warnings
in unlock_new_inode() indicating that we are initialising an inode
that isn't in a the correct state for a new inode.
When we do an inode lookup via a file handle or a bulkstat, we don't
serialise lookups at a higher level through the dentry cache (i.e.
pathless lookup), and so we can get concurrent lookups of the same
inode.
The race condition is between the insertion of the inode into the
cache in the case of a cache miss and a concurrently lookup:

This can lead to inode corruption, inode list corruption, etc, and
is generally a bad thing to occur.
Fix this by setting XFS_INEW before inserting the inode into the
radix tree. This will ensure any concurrent lookup will find the new
inode with XFS_INEW set and that forces the lookup to wait until the
XFS_INEW flag is removed before allowing the lookup to succeed.

Replace the global dquot lru lists with a per-filesystem one.
Note that the shrinker isn't wire up to the per-superblock VFS shrinker
infrastructure as would have problems summing up and splitting the counts
for inodes and dquots. I don't think this is a major problem as the quota
cache isn't as interwinded with the inode cache as the dentry cache is,
because an inode that is dropped from the cache will generally release
a dquot reference, but most of the time it won't be the last one.

Switch the quota code over to use the generic XFS statistics infrastructure.
While the legacy /proc/fs/xfs/xqm and /proc/fs/xfs/xqmstats interfaces are

Since then any use of "variable length arrays" has become blasphemous.
Even in perfectly good, beautiful, perfectly safe code like the one
below where the variable length arrays are only used as a sizeof()
parameter, for type-safe dynamic structure allocations. GCC is not
executing any stack allocation code.
I have produced a small file which defines two functions main1(unsigned numdevs)
and main2(unsigned numdevs). main1 uses code as before with call to malloc
and main2 uses code as of after this patch. I compiled it as:

Normally, we have to issue a cache flush before we can update journal tail in
journal superblock, effectively wiping out old transactions from the journal.
So use the fact that during transaction commit we issue cache flush anyway and
opportunistically push journal tail as far as we can. Since update of journal
superblock is still costly (we have to use WRITE_FUA), we update log tail only
if we can free significant amount of space.

All accesses to checkpointing entries in journal_head are protected
by j_list_lock. Thus __jbd2_journal_remove_checkpoint() doesn't really
need bh_state lock.
Also the only part of journal head that the rest of checkpointing code
needs to check is jh->b_transaction which is safe to read under
j_list_lock.
So we can safely remove bh_state lock from all of checkpointing code which
makes it considerably prettier.

BH_JWrite bit should be set when buffer is written to the journal. So
checkpointing shouldn't set this bit when writing out buffer. This didn't
cause any observable bug since BH_JWrite bit is used only for debugging
purposes but it's good to have this consistent.

When we reach jbd2_cleanup_journal_tail(), there is no guarantee that
checkpointed buffers are on a stable storage - especially if buffers were
written out by jbd2_log_do_checkpoint(), they are likely to be only in disk's
caches. Thus when we update journal superblock effectively removing old
transaction from journal, this write of superblock can get to stable storage
before those checkpointed buffers which can result in filesystem corruption
after a crash. Thus we must unconditionally issue a cache flush before we
update journal superblock in these cases.
A similar problem can also occur if journal superblock is written only in
disk's caches, other transaction starts reusing space of the transaction
cleaned from the log and power failure happens. Subsequent journal replay would
still try to replay the old transaction but some of it's blocks may be already
overwritten by the new transaction. For this reason we must use WRITE_FUA when
updating log tail and we must first write new log tail to disk and update
in-memory information only after that.

Add a new ili_fields member to the inode log item to isolate the in-memory
flags from the ones that actually go to the log. This will allow tracking
timestamp-only updates for fdatasync and O_DSYNC in the next patch and
prepares for divorcing the on-disk log format from the in-memory log item
a little further down the road.

Timestamps on regular files are the last metadata that XFS does not update
transactionally. Now that we use the delaylog mode exclusively and made
the log scode scale extremly well there is no need to bypass that code for
timestamp updates. Logging all updates allows to drop a lot of code, and
will allow for further performance improvements later on.
Note that this patch drops optimized handling of fdatasync - it will be
added back in a separate commit.

With the latest and greatest changes to the freezer, I started seeing
panics that were caused by jbd2 running post-process freezing and
hitting the canary BUG_ON for non-TuxOnIce I/O submission. I've traced
this back to a lack of set_freezable calls in both jbd and jbd2. Since
they're clearly meant to be frozen (there are tests for freezing()), I
submit the following patch to add the missing calls.

Do not use unlogged metadata updates and the VFS dirty bit for updating
the file size after writeback. In addition to causing various problems
with updates getting delayed for far too long this also drags in the
unscalable VFS dirty tracking, and is one of the few remaining unlogged
metadata updates.

There are some log tail updates that are not protected by j_checkpoint_mutex.
Some of these are harmless because they happen during startup or shutdown but
updates in jbd2_journal_commit_transaction() and jbd2_journal_flush() can
really race with other log tail updates (e.g. someone doing
jbd2_journal_flush() with someone running jbd2_cleanup_journal_tail()). So
protect all log tail updates with j_checkpoint_mutex.

There are three case of updating journal superblock. In the first case, we want
to mark journal as empty (setting s_sequence to 0), in the second case we want
to update log tail, in the third case we want to update s_errno. Split these
cases into separate functions. It makes the code slightly more straightforward
and later patches will make the distinction even more important.

In commit 5ffaf85541 "NFS: replace global bl_wq with per-net one" we
made "msg" a pointer instead of a struct stored in stack memory. But we
forgot to change the memset() here so we're still clearing stack memory
instead clearing the struct like we intended. It will lead to a kernel
crash.

Explicitly test for an extent whose length is zero, and flag that as a
corrupted extent.
This avoids a kernel BUG_ON assertion failure.
Tested: Without this patch, the file system image found in
tests/f_ext_zero_len/image.gz in the latest e2fsprogs sources causes a
kernel panic. With this patch, an ext4 file system error is noted
instead, and the file system is marked as being corrupted.

This queue is used for sleeping in kernel and it have to be per-net since we
don't want to wake any other waiters except in out network nemespace.
BTW, move wq to per-net data is easy. But some way to handle upcall timeouts
have to be provided. On message destroy in case of timeout, tasks, waiting for
message to be delivered, should be awakened. Thus, some data required to
located the right wait queue. Chosen solution replaces rpc_pipe_msg object with
new introduced bl_pipe_msg object, containing rpc_pipe_msg and proper wq.

Allow a 9p2000.L server to supply the statfs f_type value rather than
hardwiring V9FS_MAGIC. It is desirable to give the server this option
in some applications, e.g. I/O forwarding.

complete_walk() returns either ECHILD or ESTALE. do_last() turns this into
ECHILD unconditionally. If not in RCU mode, this error will reach userspace
which is complete nonsense.

udf_release_file() can be called from munmap() path with mmap_sem held. Thus
we cannot take i_mutex there because that ranks above mmap_sem. Luckily,
i_mutex is not needed in udf_release_file() anymore since protection by
i_data_sem is enough to protect from races with write and truncate.

9a7aa12f39 introduced additional logic around setting the i_mutex
lockdep class for directory inodes. The idea was that some filesystems
may want their own special lockdep class for different directory
inodes and calling unlock_new_inode() should not clobber one of
those special classes.
I believe that the added conditional, around the *negated* return value
of lockdep_match_class(), caused directory inodes to be placed in the
wrong lockdep class.
inode_init_always() sets the i_mutex lockdep class with i_mutex_key for
all inodes. If the filesystem did not change the class during inode
initialization, then the conditional mentioned above was false and the
directory inode was incorrectly left in the non-directory lockdep class.
If the filesystem did set a special lockdep class, then the conditional
mentioned above was true and that class was clobbered with
i_mutex_dir_key.
This patch removes the negation from the conditional so that the i_mutex
lockdep class is properly set for directory inodes. Special classes are
preserved and directory inodes with unmodified classes are set with
i_mutex_dir_key.

When the NFSv4.0 server tells us that it can no-longer talk to us
on the callback channel, we should attempt a new SETCLIENTID in
order to re-transmit the callback channel information.
Note that as long as we do not change the boot verifier, this is
a safe procedure; the server is required to keep our state.
Also move the function nfs_handle_cb_pathdown to fs/nfs/nfs4state.c,
and change the name in order to mark it as being specific to NFSv4.0.

Current code has put_ioctx() called asynchronously from aio_fput_routine();
that's done *after* we have killed the request that used to pin ioctx,
so there's nothing to stop io_destroy() waiting in wait_for_all_aios()
from progressing. As the result, we can end up with async call of
put_ioctx() being the last one and possibly happening during exit_mmap()
or elf_core_dump(), neither of which expects stray munmap() being done
to them...
We do need to prevent _freeing_ ioctx until aio_fput_routine() is done
with that, but that's all we care about - neither io_destroy() nor
exit_aio() will progress past wait_for_all_aios() until aio_fput_routine()
does really_put_req(), so the ioctx teardown won't be done until then
and we don't care about the contents of ioctx past that point.
Since actual freeing of these suckers is RCU-delayed, we don't need to
bump ioctx refcount when request goes into list for async removal.
All we need is rcu_read_lock held just over the ->ctx_lock-protected
area in aio_fput_routine().

Have ioctx_alloc() return an extra reference, so that caller would drop it
on success and not bother with re-grabbing it on failure exit. The current
code is obviously broken - io_destroy() from another thread that managed
to guess the address io_setup() would've returned would free ioctx right
under us; gets especially interesting if aio_context_t * we pass to
io_setup() points to PROT_READ mapping, so put_user() fails and we end
up doing io_destroy() on kioctx another thread has just got freed...

gfs2_fallocate was calling gfs2_write_alloc_required() once at the start of
the function. This caused problems since gfs2_write_alloc_required used a
long unsigned int for the len, but gfs2_fallocate could allocate a much
larger amount. This patch will move the call into the loop where the
chunks are actually allocated and zeroed out. This will keep the allocation
size under the limit, and also allow gfs2_fallocate to quickly skip over
sections of the file that are already completely allocated.
fallcate_chunk was also not correctly setting the file size. It was using the
len veriable to find the last block written to, but by the time it was setting
the size, the len variable had already been decremented to 0.

We already send both a pre and post flush to the block device
when writing a journal header. There is no need to wait for
the previous I/O specifically when we do this, unless we've
turned "barriers" off.
As a side effect, this also cleans up the code path for flushing
the journal and makes it more readable.

Ok, this is hacky, and only works on little-endian machines with goo
unaligned handling. And even then only with CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC
disabled, since it can access up to 7 bytes after the pathname.
But it runs like a bat out of hell.

In order to ensure that we've got enough buffer heads for flushing
the journal, the orignal code used __GFP_NOFAIL when performing
this allocation. Here we dispense with that in favour of using a
mempool. This should improve efficiency in low memory conditions
since flushing the journal is a good way to get memory back, we
don't want to be spinning, waiting on memory allocations. The
buffers which are allocated via this mempool are fairly short lived,
so that we'll recycle them pretty quickly.
Although there are other memory allocations which occur during the
journal flush process, this is the one which can potentially require
the most memory, so the most important one to fix.
The amount of memory reserved is a fixed amount, and we should not need
to scale it when there are a greater number of filesystems in use.

If a setattr() fails because of an NFS4ERR_OPENMODE error, it is
probably due to us holding a read delegation. Ensure that the
recovery routines return that delegation in this case.

Handle DS READ and WRITE stateid errors by recovering the stateid on the MDS.
NFS4ERR_OLD_STATEID is ignored as the client always sends a
state sequenceid of zero for DS READ and WRITE stateids.

The nfs4_verifier's data field is not guaranteed to be u32-aligned.
Casting an array of chars to a u32 * is considered generally
hazardous.
Fix this by using a __be32 array to generate a verifier's contents,
and then byte-copy the contents into the verifier field. The contents
of a verifier, for all intents and purposes, are opaque bytes. Only
local code that generates a verifier need know the actual content and
format. Everyone else compares the full byte array for exact
equality.
Also, sizeof(nfs4_verifer) is the size of the in-core verifier data
structure, but NFS4_VERIFIER_SIZE is the number of octets in an XDR'd
verifier. The two are not interchangeable, even if they happen to
have the same value.

Replace the union with the common struct stateid4 as defined in both
RFC3530 and RFC5661. This makes it easier to access the sequence id,

nfs41_validate_delegation_stateid is broken if we supply a stateid with
a non-zero sequence id. Instead of trying to match the sequence id,
the function assumes that we always want to error. While this is
true for a delegation callback, it is not true in general.
Also fix a typo in nfs4_callback_recall.

If we know that the delegation stateid is bad or revoked, we need to
remove that delegation as soon as possible, and then mark all the
stateids that relied on that delegation for recovery. We cannot use
the delegation as part of the recovery process.
Also note that NFSv4.1 uses a different error code (NFS4ERR_DELEG_REVOKED)
to indicate that the delegation was revoked.
Finally, ensure that setlk() and setattr() can both recover safely from
a revoked delegation.

The problem lies with the allocation batching code. It will
opportunistically allocate kiocbs, and then trim back the list of iocbs
when there is not enough room in the completion ring to hold all of the
events.
In the case above, what happens is that the pruning back of events ends
up freeing up the last active request and the context is marked as dead,
so it is thus responsible for waking up waiters. Unfortunately, the
code does not check for this condition, so we end up with a hung task.

Replace xfs_ioend_new_eof with a new inline xfs_new_eof helper that
doesn't require and ioend, and is available also outside of xfs_aops.c.
Also make the code a bit more clear by using a normal if statement
instead of a slightly misleading MIN().

The new concurrency managed workqueues are cheap enough that we can create
per-filesystem instead of global workqueues. This allows us to remove the
trylock or defer scheme on the ilock, which is not helpful once we have
outstanding log reservations until finishing a size update.
Also allow the default concurrency on this workqueues so that I/O completions
blocking on the ilock for one inode do not block process for another inode.

We can clear PageWriteback on each page when the IO
completes, but we can't release the references on the page
until we convert any uninitialized extents.
Without this patch, the use of the dioread_nolock mount
option can break buffered writes, because extents may
not be converted by the time a subsequent buffered read
comes in; if the page is not in the page cache, a read
will return zeros if the extent is still uninitialized.
I tested this with a (temporary) patch that adds a call
to msleep(1000) at the start of ext4_end_io_work(), to delay
processing of each DIO-unwritten work queue item. With this
msleep(), a simple workload of
fallocate
write
fadvise
read
will fail without this patch, succeeds with it.

This is using the aio-stress program from the xfstests test suite.
That particular command line tells aio-stress to do random writes to
20 files from 20 threads (one thread per file). The files are NOT
preallocated, so you will get writes to random offsets within the
file, thus creating holes and extending i_size. It also opens the
file with O_DIRECT and O_SYNC.
On to the problem. When an I/O requires unwritten extent conversion,
it is queued onto the completed_io_list for the ext4 inode. Two code
paths will pull work items from this list. The first is the
ext4_end_io_work routine, and the second is ext4_flush_completed_IO,
which is called via the fsync path (and O_SYNC handling, as well).
There are two issues I've found in these code paths. First, if the
fsync path beats the work routine to a particular I/O, the work
routine will free the io_end structure! It does not take into account
the fact that the io_end may still be in use by the fsync path. I've
fixed this issue by adding yet another IO_END flag, indicating that
the io_end is being processed by the fsync path.
The second problem is that the work routine will make an assignment to
io->flag outside of the lock. I have witnessed this result in a hang
at umount. Moving the flag setting inside the lock resolved that
problem.
The problem was introduced by commit b82e384c7b ("ext4: optimize
locking for end_io extent conversion"), which first appeared in 3.2.
As such, the fix should be backported to that release (probably along
with the unwritten extent conversion race fix).

For extent-based files, you can perform DIO to holes, as mentioned in
the comments in ext4_ext_direct_IO. However, that function passes
DIO_SKIP_HOLES to __blockdev_direct_IO, which is *really* confusing to
the uninitiated reader. The key, here, is that the get_block function
passed in, ext4_get_block_write, completely ignores the create flag
that is passed to it (the create flag is passed in from the direct I/O
code, which uses the DIO_SKIP_HOLES flag to determine whether or not
it should be cleared).
This is a long-winded way of saying that the DIO_SKIP_HOLES flag is
ultimately ignored. So let's remove it.

This patch adds a call to gfs2_rindex_update from function gfs2_blk2rgrpd
and removes calls to it that are made redundant by it. The problem is
that a gfs2_grow can add rgrps to the rindex, then put those rgrps into
use, thus rendering the rindex we read in at mount time incomplete.

Over time, we've slowly eliminated the use of sd_rindex_mutex.
Up to this point, it was only used in two places: function
gfs2_ri_total (which totals the file system size by reading
and parsing the rindex file) and function gfs2_rindex_update
which updates the rgrps in memory. Both of these functions have
the rindex glock to protect them, so the rindex is unnecessary.
Since gfs2_grow writes to the rindex via the meta_fs, the mutex
is in the wrong order according to the normal rules. This patch
eliminates the mutex entirely to avoid the problem.

Users who tried to use the ext4 file system driver is being used for
the ext2 or ext3 file systems (via the CONFIG_EXT4_USE_FOR_EXT23
option) could have failed mounts if their /etc/fstab contains options
recognized by ext2 or ext3 but which have since been removed in ext4.
So teach ext4 to recognize them and give a warning that the mount
option was removed.

Now that /proc/mounts is consistently showing only those mount options
which need to be specified in /etc/fstab or on the mount command line,
it is useful to have file which shows exactly which file system
options are enabled. This can be useful when debugging a user
problem.

It's only used inside fs/dcache.c, and we're going to play games with it
for the word-at-a-time patches. This time we really don't even want to
export it, because it really is an internal function to fs/dcache.c, and
has been since it was introduced.
Having it in that extremely hot header file (it's included in pretty
much everything, thanks to <linux/fs.h>) is a disaster for testing
different versions, and is utterly pointless.
We really should have some kind of header file diet thing, where we
figure out which parts of header files are really better off private and
only result in more expensive compiles.

By using a table-drive approach, we shave about 100 lines of code from
ext4, and make the code a bit more regular and factored out. This

The reada code from scrub was casting down a u64 to
an unsigned long so it could insert it into a radix tree.
What it really wanted to do was cast down the result of a shift, instead
of casting down the u64. The bug resulted in trying to insert our
reada struct into the wrong place, which caused soft lockups and other
problems.

The code in link_path_walk() that finds out the length and the hash of
the next path component is some of the hottest code in the kernel. And
I have a version of it that does things at the full width of the CPU
wordsize at a time, but that means that we *really* want to split it up
into a separate helper function.
So this re-organizes the code a bit and splits the hashing part into a
helper function called "hash_name()". It returns the length of the
pathname component, while at the same time computing and writing the
hash to the appropriate location.
The code generation is slightly changed by this patch, but generally for
the better - and the added abstraction actually makes the code easier to
read too. And the new interface is well suited for replacing just the
"hash_name()" function with alternative implementations.

There aren't any performance-critical users, so inlining it is silly.
But it wouldn't matter if it wasn't for the fact that the word-at-a-time
dentry name patches want to conditionally replace the function, and
uninlining it sets the stage for that.
So again, this is a preparatory patch that doesn't change any semantics,
and only prepares for a much cleaner and testable word-at-a-time dentry
name accessor patch.

They came up as I was doing the word-at-a-time dcache name accessor

The fh_expire_type file attribute is a filesystem wide attribute that
consists of flags that indicate what characteristics file handles
on this FSID have.
Our client doesn't support volatile file handles. It should find
out early (say, at mount time) whether the server is going to play
shenanighans with file handles during a migration.

The Linux NFS client must distinguish between referral events (which
it currently supports) and migration events (which it does not yet
support).
In both types of events, an fs_locations array is returned. But upper
layers, not the XDR layer, should make the distinction between a
referral and a migration. There really isn't a way for an XDR decoder
function to distinguish the two, in general.
Slightly adjust the FATTR flags returned by decode_fs_locations()
to set NFS_ATTR_FATTR_V4_LOCATIONS only if a non-empty locations
array was returned from the server. Then have logic in nfs4proc.c
distinguish whether the locations array is for a referral or
something else.

For debugging, introduce a simplistic function to print NFS file
handles on the system console. The main function is hooked into the
dprintk debugging facility, but you can directly call the helper,
_nfs_display_fhandle(), if you want to print a handle unconditionally.

For NFSv4 mounts, the clientaddr= mount option has always been
required. Now we have rpc_localaddr() in the kernel, which was
modeled after the same logic in the mount.nfs command that constructs
the clientaddr= mount option. If user space doesn't provide a
clientaddr= mount option, the kernel can now construct its own.

When the cl_xprt field is updated, the cl_server field will also have

A migration event will replace the rpc_xprt used by an rpc_clnt. To
ensure this can be done safely, all references to cl_xprt must now use
a form of rcu_dereference().
Special care is taken with rpc_peeraddr2str(), which returns a pointer
to memory whose lifetime is the same as the rpc_xprt.

I noticed recently that decode_attr_fs_locations() is not generating
very pretty debugging output. The pathname components each appear on
a separate line of output, though that does not appear to be the
intended display behavior. The preferred way to generate continued
lines of output on the console is to use pr_cont().
Note that incoming pathname4 components contain a string that is not
necessarily NUL-terminated. I did actually see some trailing garbage
on the console. In addition to correcting the line continuation
problem, add a string precision format specifier to ensure that each
component string is displayed properly, and that vsnprintf() does
not Oops.
Someone pointed out that allowing incoming network data to possibly
generate a console line of unbounded length may not be such a good
idea. Since this output will rarely be enabled, and there is a hard
upper bound (NFS4_PATHNAME_MAXCOMPONENTS) in our implementation, this
is probably not a major concern.
It might be useful to additionally sanity-check the length of each
incoming component, however. RFC 3530bis15 does not suggest a maximum
number of UTF-8 characters per component for either the pathname4 or
component4 types. However, we could invent one that is appropriate
for our implementation.
Another possibility is to scrap all of this and print these pathnames
in upper layers after a reasonable amount of sanity checking in the
XDR layer. This would give us an opportunity to allocate a full
buffer so that the whole pathname would be output via a single
dprintk.

The regset common infrastructure assumed that regsets would always
have .get and .set methods, but not necessarily .active methods.
Unfortunately people have since written regsets without .set methods.
Rather than putting in stub functions everywhere, handle regsets with
null .get or .set methods explicitly.

Allow the user to mount an NFSv4.0 or NFSv4.1 partition using a
standard syntax of '-overs=4.0', or '-overs=4.1' rather than the
more cumbersome '-overs=4,minorversion=1'.

Linux-specific syntax '-ov4.0', '-ov4.1'.

There's no point to have two bits that are set in parallel; so use the

The overflow might happen when passing blocknr into
ext3_get_group_no_and_offset(), because it expects type ext3_fsblk_t
which might be smaller than uint64_t. This will most likely happen when
calling FITRIM with the default argument len = ULLONG_MAX.
Fix this by using "end" variable instead of "start+len" as it is easier
to get right and specifically check that the end is not beyond the end
of the file system, so we are sure that the result of
get_group_no_and_offset() will not overflow. Otherwise truncate it to
the size of the file system.

Since 2.6.39 (1196f8b), when a driver returns -ENOMEDIUM for open(),
__blkdev_get() calls rescan_partitions() to remove
in-kernel partition structures and raise KOBJ_CHANGE uevent.
However it ends up calling driver's revalidate_disk without open
and could cause oops.

"request key actor" to place an upcall to the legacy idmapper rather
than going through /sbin/request-key. This will only be used as a

The NFS4CLNT_LAYOUTRECALL bit is a long-term impediment to scalability. It
basically stops all other recalls by a given server once any layout recall
is requested.
If the recall is for a different file, then we don't care.
If the recall applies to the same file, then we're in one of two situations:
Either we are in the case of a replay of an existing request, in which case
the session is supposed to deal with matters, or we are dealing with a
completely different request, in which case we should just try to process
it.

The NFS4CLNT_LAYOUTRECALL tests in pnfs_layout_process and
pnfs_update_layout are redundant.
In the case of a bulk layout recall, we're always testing for
the NFS_LAYOUT_BULK_RECALL flay anyway.
In the case of a file or segment recall, the call to
pnfs_set_layout_stateid() updates the layout_header 'barrier'
sequence id, which triggers the test in pnfs_layoutgets_blocked()
and is less race-prone than NFS4CLNT_LAYOUTRECALL anyway.

udf_release_file() can be called from munmap() path with mmap_sem held. Thus
we cannot take i_mutex there because that ranks above mmap_sem. Luckily,
i_mutex is not needed in udf_release_file() anymore since protection by
i_data_sem is enough to protect from races with write and truncate.

ECMA 1.67 requires setting logicalBlocksRecorded to zero if the file
has no extents. This should be checked in udf_update_inode().
udf_fill_inode() will then take care of itself.

Commit 36350462 removed unused quota support from UDF. As an unfortunate
sideeffect it also removed updates of i_blocks so all files had i_block == 0.
Fix the problem by returning updates of file space back to UDF allocation and
freeing functions.

dqptr_sem can be called from slab reclaim. tty layer uses GFP_KERNEL mask for
allocation so it can end up calling slab reclaim. Given quota code can call
into tty layer to print warning this creates possibility for lock inversion
between tty->atomic_write_lock and dqptr_sem.
Using direct printing of warnings from quota layer is obsolete but since it's
easy enough to change quota code to not hold any locks when printing warnings,
let's just do it. It seems like a good thing to do even when we use netlink
layer to transmit warnings to userspace.

Currently ext3 updates ctime in ext3_splice_branch() which is called whenever
we allocate one block. But it is wasteful because ext3 doesn't support
nanosecond timestamp. This leads to a performance loss.

dquot_free_block() is called in the end of ext3_new_blocks() and updates
information of the inode structure. However, this update is not necessary
if the number of blocks we requested is equal to the number of
allocated blocks.

Now that XFS takes quota reservations into account there is no need to flush
anything before reporting quotas - in addition to beeing fully transactional
all quota information is also 100% coherent with the rest of the filesystem
now.

Report all quota usage including the currently pending reservations. This
avoids the need to flush delalloc space before gathering quota information,
and matches quota enforcement, which already takes the reservations into
account.
This fixes xfstests 270.

The is no good reason to have these two separate, and for the next change

This patch changes the 'i_nlink' counter handling in 'ubifs_unlink()',
'ubifs_rmdir()' and 'ubifs_rename()'. In these function 'i_nlink' may become 0,
and if 'ubifs_jnl_update()' failed, we would use 'inc_nlink()' to restore
the previous 'i_nlink' value, which is incorrect from the VFS point of view and
would cause a 'WARN_ON()' (see 'inc_nlink() implementation).
This patches saves the previous 'i_nlink' value in a local variable and uses it
at the error path instead of calling 'inc_nlink()'. We do this only for the
inodes where 'i_nlink' may potentially become zero.

Most of the time we use the dumping function to dump something in case
of error. We use 'KERN_DEBUG' printk level, and the drawback is that users
do not see them in the console, while they see the other error messages
in the console. The result is that they send bug reports which does not
contain a lot of useful information. This patch changes the printk level
of the dump functions to 'KERN_ERR' to correct the situation.
I documented it in the MTD web site that people have to send the 'dmesg' output
when submitting bug reposts - it did not help.

This patch sorts the ordered write list for GFS2 writes.
This increases the throughput for simultaneous writes.
For example, if you have ten processes, all doing:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/gfs2/fileX
on different files, the throughput will be much better.

The FITRIM ioctl provides an alternative way to send discard requests to
the underlying device. Using the discard mount option results in every
freed block generating a discard request to the block device. This can
be slow, since many block devices can only process discard requests of
larger sizes, and also such operations can be time consuming.
Rather than using the discard mount option, FITRIM allows a sweep of the
filesystem on an occasional basis, and also to optionally avoid sending
down discard requests for smaller regions.
In GFS2 FITRIM will work at resource group granularity. There is a flag
for each resource group which keeps track of which resource groups have
been trimmed. This flag is reset whenever a deallocation occurs in the
resource group, and set whenever a successful FITRIM of that resource
group has taken place. This helps to reduce repeated discard requests
for the same block ranges, again improving performance.

The stats are divided into two sets: those relating to the
super block and those relating to an individual glock. The
super block stats are done on a per cpu basis in order to
try and reduce the overhead of gathering them. They are also
further divided by glock type.
In the case of both the super block and glock statistics,
the same information is gathered in each case. The super
block statistics are used to provide default values for
most of the glock statistics, so that newly created glocks
should have, as far as possible, a sensible starting point.
The statistics are divided into three pairs of mean and
variance, plus two counters. The mean/variance pairs are
smoothed exponential estimates and the algorithm used is
one which will be very familiar to those used to calculation
of round trip times in network code.
The three pairs of mean/variance measure the following
things:
1. DLM lock time (non-blocking requests)
2. DLM lock time (blocking requests)
3. Inter-request time (again to the DLM)
A non-blocking request is one which will complete right
away, whatever the state of the DLM lock in question. That
currently means any requests when (a) the current state of
the lock is exclusive (b) the requested state is either null
or unlocked or (c) the "try lock" flag is set. A blocking
request covers all the other lock requests.
There are two counters. The first is there primarily to show
how many lock requests have been made, and thus how much data
has gone into the mean/variance calculations. The other counter
is counting queueing of holders at the top layer of the glock
code. Hopefully that number will be a lot larger than the number
of dlm lock requests issued.
So why gather these statistics? There are several reasons
we'd like to get a better idea of these timings:
1. To be able to better set the glock "min hold time"
2. To spot performance issues more easily
3. To improve the algorithm for selecting resource groups for
allocation (to base it on lock wait time, rather than blindly
using a "try lock")
Due to the smoothing action of the updates, a step change in
some input quantity being sampled will only fully be taken
into account after 8 samples (or 4 for the variance) and this
needs to be carefully considered when interpreting the
results.
Knowing both the time it takes a lock request to complete and
the average time between lock requests for a glock means we
can compute the total percentage of the time for which the
node is able to use a glock vs. time that the rest of the
cluster has its share. That will be very useful when setting
the lock min hold time.
The other point to remember is that all times are in
nanoseconds. Great care has been taken to ensure that we
measure exactly the quantities that we want, as accurately
as possible. There are always inaccuracies in any
measuring system, but I hope this is as accurate as we
can reasonably make it.

This makes mount take slightly longer, but at the same time, the first
write to the filesystem will be faster too. It also means that if there
is a problem in the resource index, then we can refuse to mount rather
than having to try and report that when the first write occurs.
In addition, to avoid recursive locking, we hvae to take account of
instances when the rindex glock may already be held when we are
trying to update the rbtree of resource groups.

This patch fixes a problem whereby gfs2_grow was failing and causing GFS2
to assert. The problem was that when GFS2's fallocate operation tried to
acquire an "allocation" it made sure the rindex was up to date, and if not,
it called gfs2_rindex_update. However, if the file being fallocated was
the rindex itself, it was already locked at that point. By calling
gfs2_rindex_update at an earlier point in time, we bring rindex up to date
and thereby avoid trying to lock it when the "allocation" is acquired.

The cifs code will attempt to open files on lookup under certain
circumstances. What happens though if we find that the file we opened
was actually a FIFO or other special file?
Currently, the open filehandle just ends up being leaked leading to
a dentry refcount mismatch and oops on umount. Fix this by having the
code close the filehandle on the server if it turns out not to be a
regular file. While we're at it, change this spaghetti if statement
into a switch too.

Currently we do inc/drop_nlink for a parent directory for every
mkdir/rmdir calls. That's wrong when Unix extensions are disabled
because in this case a server doesn't follow the same semantic and
returns the old value on the next QueryInfo request. As the result,
we update our value with the server one and then decrement it on
every rmdir call - go to negative nlink values.
Fix this by removing inc/drop_nlink for the parent directory from
mkdir/rmdir, setting it for a revalidation and ignoring NumberOfLinks
for directories when Unix extensions are disabled.

When the autofs protocol version 5 packet type was added in commit
5c0a32fc2c ("autofs4: add new packet type for v5 communications"), it
obvously tried quite hard to be word-size agnostic, and uses explicitly
sized fields that are all correctly aligned.
However, with the final "char name[NAME_MAX+1]" array at the end, the
actual size of the structure ends up being not very well defined:
because the struct isn't marked 'packed', doing a "sizeof()" on it will
align the size of the struct up to the biggest alignment of the members
it has.
And despite all the members being the same, the alignment of them is
different: a "__u64" has 4-byte alignment on x86-32, but native 8-byte
alignment on x86-64. And while 'NAME_MAX+1' ends up being a nice round
number (256), the name[] array starts out a 4-byte aligned.
End result: the "packed" size of the structure is 300 bytes: 4-byte, but
not 8-byte aligned.
As a result, despite all the fields being in the same place on all
architectures, sizeof() will round up that size to 304 bytes on
architectures that have 8-byte alignment for u64.
Note that this is *not* a problem for 32-bit compat mode on POWER, since
there __u64 is 8-byte aligned even in 32-bit mode. But on x86, 32-bit
and 64-bit alignment is different for 64-bit entities, and as a result
the structure that has exactly the same layout has different sizes.
So on x86-64, but no other architecture, we will just subtract 4 from
the size of the structure when running in a compat task. That way we
will write the properly sized packet that user mode expects.
Not pretty. Sadly, this very subtle, and unnecessary, size difference
has been encoded in user space that wants to read packets of *exactly*
the right size, and will refuse to touch anything else.

At the end of xfs_reclaim_inode(), the inode is locked in order to
we wait for a possible concurrent lookup to complete before the
inode is freed. This synchronization step was taking both the ILOCK
and the IOLOCK, but the latter was causing lockdep to produce
reports of the possibility of deadlock.
It turns out that there's no need to acquire the IOLOCK at this
point anyway. It may have been required in some earlier version of
the code, but there should be no need to take the IOLOCK in
xfs_iget(), so there's no (longer) any need to get it here for
synchronization. Add an assertion in xfs_iget() as a reminder
of this assumption.
Dave Chinner diagnosed this on IRC, and Christoph Hellwig suggested
no longer including the IOLOCK. I just put together the patch.

signalfd_cleanup() ensures that ->signalfd_wqh is not used, but
this is not enough. eppoll_entry->whead still points to the memory
we are going to free, ep_unregister_pollwait()->remove_wait_queue()
is obviously unsafe.
Change ep_poll_callback(POLLFREE) to set eppoll_entry->whead = NULL,
change ep_unregister_pollwait() to check pwq->whead != NULL under
rcu_read_lock() before remove_wait_queue(). We add the new helper,
ep_remove_wait_queue(), for this.
This works because sighand_cachep is SLAB_DESTROY_BY_RCU and because
->signalfd_wqh is initialized in sighand_ctor(), not in copy_sighand.
ep_unregister_pollwait()->remove_wait_queue() can play with already
freed and potentially reused ->sighand, but this is fine. This memory
must have the valid ->signalfd_wqh until rcu_read_unlock().

This patch is intentionally incomplete to simplify the review.
It ignores ep_unregister_pollwait() which plays with the same wqh.
See the next change.
epoll assumes that the EPOLL_CTL_ADD'ed file controls everything
f_op->poll() needs. In particular it assumes that the wait queue
can't go away until eventpoll_release(). This is not true in case
of signalfd, the task which does EPOLL_CTL_ADD uses its ->sighand
which is not connected to the file.
This patch adds the special event, POLLFREE, currently only for
epoll. It expects that init_poll_funcptr()'ed hook should do the
necessary cleanup. Perhaps it should be defined as EPOLLFREE in
eventpoll.
__cleanup_sighand() is changed to do wake_up_poll(POLLFREE) if
->signalfd_wqh is not empty, we add the new signalfd_cleanup()
helper.
ep_poll_callback(POLLFREE) simply does list_del_init(task_list).
This make this poll entry inconsistent, but we don't care. If you
share epoll fd which contains our sigfd with another process you
should blame yourself. signalfd is "really special". I simply do
not know how we can define the "right" semantics if it used with
epoll.
The main problem is, epoll calls signalfd_poll() once to establish
the connection with the wait queue, after that signalfd_poll(NULL)
returns the different/inconsistent results depending on who does
EPOLL_CTL_MOD/signalfd_read/etc. IOW: apart from sigmask, signalfd
has nothing to do with the file, it works with the current thread.
In short: this patch is the hack which tries to fix the symptoms.
It also assumes that nobody can take tasklist_lock under epoll
locks, this seems to be true.
Note:
- we do not have wake_up_all_poll() but wake_up_poll()
is fine, poll/epoll doesn't use WQ_FLAG_EXCLUSIVE.
- signalfd_cleanup() uses POLLHUP along with POLLFREE,
we need a couple of simple changes in eventpoll.c to
make sure it can't be "lost".

With kernel 3.1, Christoph removed i_alloc_sem and replaced it with
calls (namely inode_dio_wait() and inode_dio_done()) which are
EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL() thus they cannot be used by non-GPL file systems and
further inode_dio_wait() was pushed from notify_change() into the file
system ->setattr() method but no non-GPL file system can make this call.
That means non-GPL file systems cannot exist any more unless they do not
use any VFS functionality related to reading/writing as far as I can
tell or at least as long as they want to implement direct i/o.
Both Linus and Al (and others) have said on LKML that this breakage of
the VFS API should not have happened and that the change was simply
missed as it was not documented in the change logs of the patches that
did those changes.
This patch changes the two function exports in question to be
EXPORT_SYMBOL() thus restoring the VFS API as it used to be - accessible
for all modules.
Christoph, who introduced the two functions and exported them GPL-only
is CC-ed on this patch to give him the opportunity to object to the
symbols being changed in this manner if he did indeed intend them to be
GPL-only and does not want them to become available to all modules.

If btrfs reads a block and finds a parent transid mismatch, it clears
the uptodate flags on the extent buffer, and the pages inside it. But
we only clear the uptodate bits in the state tree if the block straddles
more than one page.
This is from an old optimization from to reduce contention on the extent
state tree. But it is buggy because the code that retries a read from
a different copy of the block is going to find the uptodate state bits
set and skip the IO.
The end result of the bug is that we'll never actually read the good
copy (if there is one).
The fix here is to always clear the uptodate state bits, which is safe
because this code is only called when the parent transid fails.

When we are setting up the mount, we close all the
devices that were not actually part of the metadata we found.
But, we don't make sure that one of those devices wasn't
fs_devices->latest_bdev, which means we can do a use after free
on the one we closed.
This updates latest_bdev as it goes.

Added a minimal exec tracepoint. Exec is an important major event
in the life of a task, like fork(), clone() or exit(), all of
which we already trace.
[ We also do scheduling re-balancing during exec() - so it's useful
from a scheduler instrumentation POV as well. ]
If you want to watch a task start up, when it gets exec'ed is a good place
to start. With the addition of this tracepoint, exec's can be monitored
and better picture of general system activity can be obtained. This
tracepoint will also enable better process life tracking, allowing you to
answer questions like "what process keeps starting up binary X?".
This tracepoint can also be useful in ftrace filtering and trigger
conditions: i.e. starting or stopping filtering when exec is called.

Split the log regrant case out of xfs_log_reserve into a separate function,

respective callers. Also replace the XFS_LOG_PERM_RESERV flag, which easily
got misused before the previous cleanups with a simple boolean parameter.

There is no reason to wake up log space waiters when unlocking inodes or
dquots, and the commit log has no explanation for this function either.
Given that we now have exact log space wakeups everywhere we can assume
the reason for this function was to paper over log space races in earlier
XFS versions.

The only reason that xfs_log_space_wake had to do opportunistic wakeups
was that the old xfs_log_move_tail calling convention didn't allow for
exact wakeups when not updating the log tail LSN. Since this issue has
been fixed we can do exact wakeups now.

Currently xfs_log_move_tail has a tail_lsn argument that is horribly
overloaded: it may contain either an actual lsn to assign to the log tail,
0 as a special case to use the last sync LSN, or 1 to indicate that no tail
LSN assignment should be performed, and we should opportunisticly wake up
at one task waiting for log space even if we did not move the LSN.
Remove the tail lsn assigned from xfs_log_move_tail and make the two callers
use xlog_assign_tail_lsn instead of the current variant of partially using
the code in xfs_log_move_tail and partially opencoding it. Note that means
we grow an addition lock roundtrip on the AIL lock for each bulk update
or delete, which is still far less than what we had before introducing the
bulk operations. If this proves to be a problem we can still add a variant
of xlog_assign_tail_lsn that expects the lock to be held already.
Also rename the remainder of xfs_log_move_tail to xfs_log_space_wake as
that name describes its functionality much better.

This patch is a cleanup of quota check on disk blocks and inodes
reservations, and changes it as follows.
(1) add a total_count variable to store the total number of
current usages and new reservations for disk blocks and inodes,
respectively.
(2) make it more readable to check if the local variables softlimit
and hardlimit are positive. It has been changed as follows.
if (softlimit > 0ULL) -> if (softlimit)
if (hardlimit > 0ULL) -> if (hardlimit)
This is because they are defined as xfs_qcnt_t which is unsigned.

With the firmware-assisted dump support we don't require a reboot when we
are in second kernel after crash. The second kernel after crash is a normal
kernel boot and has knowledge about entire system RAM with the page tables
initialized for entire system RAM. Hence once the dump is saved to disk, we
can just release the reserved memory area for general use and continue
with second kernel as production kernel.
Hence when we release the reserved memory that contains dump data, the
'/proc/vmcore' will not be valid anymore. Hence this patch introduces
a cleanup routine that invalidates and removes the /proc/vmcore file. This
routine will be invoked before we release the reserved dump memory area.
