asm-generic cleanups for 6.10
These are a few cross-architecture cleanup patches: - Thomas Zimmermann works on separating fbdev support from the asm/video.h contents that may be used by either the old fbdev drivers or the newer drm display code. - Thorsten Blum contributes cleanups for the generic bitops code and asm-generic/bug.h - I remove the orphaned include/asm-generic/page.h header that used to included by long-removed mmu-less architectures. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEEiK/NIGsWEZVxh/FrYKtH/8kJUicFAmZLvewACgkQYKtH/8kJ UicUEQ//b5WVLOVXkFGlQvAaZkagOLEF8xSTnchA7aKrWQ/C6hSwLN6CQU6MAY7j Fe54jYQtjwBwpVIj3jn20xiXP/pZbQp9aldkOx4v8YoGnjNF5UWLHm5510DV1ecE 0LF/2YIH25vIXGY6MVm6sFq+nkDgWZee6fBFNc3GsCu2y0biD1Gob9xH/ngCHjIj tw9KS/j6MivPy/9vJ/Ml2YeutV6+pUA9hNmSrbSVlXSWFh3Wq6IZ+j6bNEftqtZY xdnYwdVfReOCIayq6hSHhAgIp/uw8JOqLuE2JNwG/9sSF4zp4ZHLvTaMhqEoCpyB 3kZYd1qQTwV3eL5PyYtRcW03KvbhfZpMPzZT+wbl9SNPUljC2MSVeSFF30Uqatgb yUJ9d/vlb1ynu1yQrFfTZ/kK+U0pPByydwLybcMtEIZ6Hrb1h/eRicvHhUx7bKUB H9z/FN/TxGY+tPradx2lqm3J1wNu0ox8DUreXjtlJijKIUZQeAkJrGJgr6i6XLBz crwgKzuQUClzEjBcoWzuTVUB7v19jaDuHMsaBBu8O9f1g5FnEIJlItqnXf1J0Dno rJy68Mxsg4Dzt4YI3lpOJGDDDPhpOTBXfgsjkuru2MrdFMgZQh+DYLl3qOkJ4DJe rdiEJb9PygBaGGQnoXO71oOLf5yQuenj+Fg5GIe9AQrci5fXwRQ= =riCs -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'asm-generic-6.10' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic Pull asm-generic cleanups from Arnd Bergmann: "These are a few cross-architecture cleanup patches: - separate out fbdev support from the asm/video.h contents that may be used by either the old fbdev drivers or the newer drm display code (Thomas Zimmermann) - cleanups for the generic bitops code and asm-generic/bug.h (Thorsten Blum) - remove the orphaned include/asm-generic/page.h header that used to be included by long-removed mmu-less architectures (me)" * tag 'asm-generic-6.10' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic: arch: Fix name collision with ACPI's video.o bug: Improve comment asm-generic: remove unused asm-generic/page.h arch: Rename fbdev header and source files arch: Remove struct fb_info from video helpers arch: Select fbdev helpers with CONFIG_VIDEO bitops: Change function return types from long to int |

The usual shower of singleton fixes and minor series all over MM,
documented (hopefully adequately) in the respective changelogs. Notable series include: - Lucas Stach has provided some page-mapping cleanup/consolidation/maintainability work in the series "mm/treewide: Remove pXd_huge() API". - In the series "Allow migrate on protnone reference with MPOL_PREFERRED_MANY policy", Donet Tom has optimized mempolicy's MPOL_PREFERRED_MANY mode, yielding almost doubled performance in one test. - In their series "Memory allocation profiling" Kent Overstreet and Suren Baghdasaryan have contributed a means of determining (via /proc/allocinfo) whereabouts in the kernel memory is being allocated: number of calls and amount of memory. - Matthew Wilcox has provided the series "Various significant MM patches" which does a number of rather unrelated things, but in largely similar code sites. - In his series "mm: page_alloc: freelist migratetype hygiene" Johannes Weiner has fixed the page allocator's handling of migratetype requests, with resulting improvements in compaction efficiency. - In the series "make the hugetlb migration strategy consistent" Baolin Wang has fixed a hugetlb migration issue, which should improve hugetlb allocation reliability. - Liu Shixin has hit an I/O meltdown caused by readahead in a memory-tight memcg. Addressed in the series "Fix I/O high when memory almost met memcg limit". - In the series "mm/filemap: optimize folio adding and splitting" Kairui Song has optimized pagecache insertion, yielding ~10% performance improvement in one test. - Baoquan He has cleaned up and consolidated the early zone initialization code in the series "mm/mm_init.c: refactor free_area_init_core()". - Baoquan has also redone some MM initializatio code in the series "mm/init: minor clean up and improvement". - MM helper cleanups from Christoph Hellwig in his series "remove follow_pfn". - More cleanups from Matthew Wilcox in the series "Various page->flags cleanups". - Vlastimil Babka has contributed maintainability improvements in the series "memcg_kmem hooks refactoring". - More folio conversions and cleanups in Matthew Wilcox's series "Convert huge_zero_page to huge_zero_folio" "khugepaged folio conversions" "Remove page_idle and page_young wrappers" "Use folio APIs in procfs" "Clean up __folio_put()" "Some cleanups for memory-failure" "Remove page_mapping()" "More folio compat code removal" - David Hildenbrand chipped in with "fs/proc/task_mmu: convert hugetlb functions to work on folis". - Code consolidation and cleanup work related to GUP's handling of hugetlbs in Peter Xu's series "mm/gup: Unify hugetlb, part 2". - Rick Edgecombe has developed some fixes to stack guard gaps in the series "Cover a guard gap corner case". - Jinjiang Tu has fixed KSM's behaviour after a fork+exec in the series "mm/ksm: fix ksm exec support for prctl". - Baolin Wang has implemented NUMA balancing for multi-size THPs. This is a simple first-cut implementation for now. arch: Rename fbdev header and source files
The per-architecture fbdev code has no dependencies on fbdev and can be used for any video-related subsystem. Rename the files to 'video'. Use video-sti.c on parisc as the source file depends on CONFIG_STI_CORE. On arc, arm, arm64, sh, and um the asm header file is an empty wrapper around the file in asm-generic. Let Kbuild generate the file. The build system does this automatically. Only um needs to generate video.h explicitly, so that it overrides the host architecture's header. The latter would otherwise interfere with the build. Further update all includes statements, include guards, and Makefiles. Also update a few strings and comments to refer to video instead of fbdev. v3: - arc, arm, arm64, sh: generate asm header via build system (Sam, Helge, Arnd) - um: rename fb.h to video.h - fix typo in commit message (Sam) Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Reviewed-by: Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org> Cc: Vineet Gupta <vgupta@kernel.org> Cc: Catalin Marinas <catalin.marinas@arm.com> Cc: Will Deacon <will@kernel.org> Cc: Huacai Chen <chenhuacai@kernel.org> Cc: WANG Xuerui <kernel@xen0n.name> Cc: Geert Uytterhoeven <geert@linux-m68k.org> Cc: Thomas Bogendoerfer <tsbogend@alpha.franken.de> Cc: "James E.J. bitops: Change function return types from long to int
Change the return types of bitops functions (ffs, fls, and fns) from long to int. The expected return values are in the range [0, 64], for which int is sufficient. Additionally, int aligns well with the return types of the corresponding __builtin_* functions, potentially reducing overall type conversions. Many of the existing bitops functions already return an int and don't need to be changed. The bitops functions in arch/ should be considered separately. Adjust some return variables to match the function return types. With GCC 13 and defconfig, these changes reduced the size of a test kernel image by 5,432 bytes on arm64 and by 248 bytes on riscv; there were no changes in size on x86_64, powerpc, or m68k. kallsyms: Avoid weak references for kallsyms symbols
kallsyms is a directory of all the symbols in the vmlinux binary, and so creating it is somewhat of a chicken-and-egg problem, as its non-zero size affects the layout of the binary, and therefore the values of the symbols. For this reason, the kernel is linked more than once, and the first pass does not include any kallsyms data at all. For the linker to accept this, the symbol declarations describing the kallsyms metadata are emitted as having weak linkage, so they can remain unsatisfied. During the subsequent passes, the weak references are satisfied by the kallsyms metadata that was constructed based on information gathered from the preceding passes. Weak references lead to somewhat worse codegen, because taking their address may need to produce NULL (if the reference was unsatisfied), and this is not usually supported by RIP or PC relative symbol references. Given that these references are ultimately always satisfied in the final link, let's drop the weak annotation, and instead, provide fallback definitions in the linker script that are only emitted if an unsatisfied reference exists. While at it, drop the FRV specific annotation that these symbols reside in .rodata - FRV is long gone. mm: change inlined allocation helpers to account at the call site
Main goal of memory allocation profiling patchset is to provide accounting that is cheap enough to run in production. To achieve that we inject counters using codetags at the allocation call sites to account every time allocation is made. This injection allows us to perform accounting efficiently because injected counters are immediately available as opposed to the alternative methods, such as using _RET_IP_, which would require counter lookup and appropriate locking that makes accounting much more expensive. This method requires all allocation functions to inject separate counters at their call sites so that their callers can be individually accounted. Counter injection is implemented by allocation hooks which should wrap all allocation functions. Inlined functions which perform allocations but do not use allocation hooks are directly charged for the allocations they perform. In most cases these functions are just specialized allocation wrappers used from multiple places to allocate objects of a specific type. It would be more useful to do the accounting at their call sites instead. Instrument these helpers to do accounting at the call site. Simple inlined allocation wrappers are converted directly into macros. More complex allocators or allocators with documentation are converted into _noprof versions and allocation hooks are added. This allows memory allocation profiling mechanism to charge allocations to the callers of these functions. lib: add allocation tagging support for memory allocation profiling
Introduce CONFIG_MEM_ALLOC_PROFILING which provides definitions to easily instrument memory allocators. It registers an "alloc_tags" codetag type with /proc/allocinfo interface to output allocation tag information when the feature is enabled. CONFIG_MEM_ALLOC_PROFILING_DEBUG is provided for debugging the memory allocation profiling instrumentation. Memory allocation profiling can be enabled or disabled at runtime using /proc/sys/vm/mem_profiling sysctl when CONFIG_MEM_ALLOC_PROFILING_DEBUG=n. CONFIG_MEM_ALLOC_PROFILING_ENABLED_BY_DEFAULT enables memory allocation profiling by default. bug: Fix no-return-statement warning with !CONFIG_BUG
BUG() does not return, and arch implementations of BUG() use unreachable()
or other non-returning code. However with !CONFIG_BUG, the default

uses its own implementation, but powerpc with !CONFIG_BUG gives a build

jump_label,module: Don't alloc static_key_mod for __ro_after_init keys
When a static_key is marked ro_after_init, its state will never change (after init), therefore jump_label_update() will never need to iterate the entries, and thus module load won't actually need to track this -- avoiding the static_key::next write. Therefore, mark these keys such that jump_label_add_module() might recognise them and avoid the modification. Use the special state: 'static_key_linked(key) && !static_key_mod(key)' to denote such keys. jump_label_add_module() does not exist under CONFIG_JUMP_LABEL=n, so the newly-introduced jump_label_init_ro() can be defined as a nop for that configuration. x86/hyperv: Use Hyper-V entropy to seed guest random number generator
A Hyper-V host provides its guest VMs with entropy in a custom ACPI table named "OEM0". The entropy bits are updated each time Hyper-V boots the VM, and are suitable for seeding the Linux guest random number generator (rng). See a brief description of OEM0 in [1]. Generation 2 VMs on Hyper-V use UEFI to boot. Existing EFI code in Linux seeds the rng with entropy bits from the EFI_RNG_PROTOCOL. Via this path, the rng is seeded very early during boot with good entropy. The ACPI OEM0 table provided in such VMs is an additional source of entropy. Generation 1 VMs on Hyper-V boot from BIOS. For these VMs, Linux doesn't currently get any entropy from the Hyper-V host. While this is not fundamentally broken because Linux can generate its own entropy, using the Hyper-V host provided entropy would get the rng off to a better start and would do so earlier in the boot process. Improve the rng seeding for Generation 1 VMs by having Hyper-V specific code in Linux take advantage of the OEM0 table to seed the rng. For Generation 2 VMs, use the OEM0 table to provide additional entropy beyond the EFI_RNG_PROTOCOL. Because the OEM0 table is custom to Hyper-V, parse it directly in the Hyper-V code in the Linux kernel and use add_bootloader_randomness() to add it to the rng. Once the entropy bits are read from OEM0, zero them out in the table so they don't appear in /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/OEM0 in the running VM. The zero'ing is done out of an abundance of caution to avoid potential security risks to the rng. Also set the OEM0 data length to zero so a kexec or other subsequent use of the table won't try to use the zero'ed bits. mshyperv: Introduce hv_get_hypervisor_version function
Introduce x86_64 and arm64 functions to get the hypervisor version information and store it in a structure for simpler parsing. Use the new function to get and parse the version at boot time. While at it, move the printing code to hv_common_init() so it is not duplicated. hyperv-tlfs: Change prefix of generic HV_REGISTER_* MSRs to HV_MSR_*
The HV_REGISTER_ are used as arguments to hv_set/get_register(), which delegate to arch-specific mechanisms for getting/setting synthetic Hyper-V MSRs. On arm64, HV_REGISTER_ defines are synthetic VP registers accessed via the get/set vp registers hypercalls. The naming matches the TLFS document, although these register names are not specific to arm64. However, on x86 the prefix HV_REGISTER_ indicates Hyper-V MSRs accessed via rdmsrl()/wrmsrl(). This is not consistent with the TLFS doc, where HV_REGISTER_ is *only* used for used for VP register names used by the get/set register hypercalls. To fix this inconsistency and prevent future confusion, change the arch-generic aliases used by callers of hv_set/get_register() to have the prefix HV_MSR_ instead of HV_REGISTER_. Use the prefix HV_X64_MSR_ for the x86-only Hyper-V MSRs. On x86, the generic HV_MSR_'s point to the corresponding HV_X64_MSR_. Move the arm64 HV_REGISTER_* defines to the asm-generic hyperv-tlfs.h, since these are not specific to arm64. On arm64, the generic HV_MSR_'s point to the corresponding HV_REGISTER_. While at it, rename hv_get/set_registers() and related functions to hv_get/set_msr(), hv_get/set_nested_msr(), etc. These are only used for Hyper-V MSRs and this naming makes that clear. treewide: update LLVM Bugzilla links
LLVM moved their issue tracker from their own Bugzilla instance to GitHub issues. While all of the links are still valid, they may not necessarily show the most up to date information around the issues, as all updates will occur on GitHub, not Bugzilla. Another complication is that the Bugzilla issue number is not always the same as the GitHub issue number. Thankfully, LLVM maintains this mapping through two shortlinks: https://llvm.org/bz<num> -> https://bugs.llvm.org/show_bug.cgi?id=<num> https://llvm.org/pr<num> -> https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/issues/<mapped_num> Switch all "https://bugs.llvm.org/show_bug.cgi?id=<num>" links to the "https://llvm.org/pr<num>" shortlink so that the links show the most up to date information. Each migrated issue links back to the Bugzilla entry, so there should be no loss of fidelity of information here. mm/mmu_gather: add __tlb_remove_folio_pages()
Add __tlb_remove_folio_pages(), which will remove multiple consecutive pages that belong to the same large folio, instead of only a single page. We'll be using this function when optimizing unmapping/zapping of large folios that are mapped by PTEs. We're using the remaining spare bit in an encoded_page to indicate that the next enoced page in an array contains actually shifted "nr_pages". Teach swap/freeing code about putting multiple folio references, and delayed rmap handling to remove page ranges of a folio. This extension allows for still gathering almost as many small folios as we used to (-1, because we have to prepare for a possibly bigger next entry), but still allows for gathering consecutive pages that belong to the same large folio. Note that we don't pass the folio pointer, because it is not required for now. Further, we don't support page_size != PAGE_SIZE, it won't be required for simple PTE batching. We have to provide a separate s390 implementation, but it's fairly straight forward. Another, more invasive and likely more expensive, approach would be to use folio+range or a PFN range instead of page+nr_pages. But, we should do that consistently for the whole mmu_gather. For now, let's keep it simple and add "nr_pages" only. Note that it is now possible to gather significantly more pages: In the past, we were able to gather ~10000 pages, now we can also gather ~5000 folio fragments that span multiple pages. A folio fragment on x86-64 can span up to 512 pages (2 MiB THP) and on arm64 with 64k in theory 8192 pages (512 MiB THP). Gathering more memory is not considered something we should worry about, especially because these are already corner cases. While we can gather more total memory, we won't free more folio fragments. As long as page freeing time primarily only depends on the number of involved folios, there is no effective change for !preempt configurations. However, we'll adjust tlb_batch_pages_flush() separately to handle corner cases where page freeing time grows proportionally with the actual memory size. mm/mmu_gather: add tlb_remove_tlb_entries()
Let's add a helper that lets us batch-process multiple consecutive PTEs. Note that the loop will get optimized out on all architectures except on powerpc. We have to add an early define of __tlb_remove_tlb_entry() on ppc to make the compiler happy (and avoid making tlb_remove_tlb_entries() a macro). mm/mmu_gather: pass "delay_rmap" instead of encoded page to __tlb_remove_page_size()
We have two bits available in the encoded page pointer to store additional information. Currently, we use one bit to request delay of the rmap removal until after a TLB flush. We want to make use of the remaining bit internally for batching of multiple pages of the same folio, specifying that the next encoded page pointer in an array is actually "nr_pages". So pass page + delay_rmap flag instead of an encoded page, to handle the encoding internally. kernel.h: removed REPEAT_BYTE from kernel.h
This patch creates wordpart.h and includes it in asm/word-at-a-time.h for all architectures. WORD_AT_A_TIME_CONSTANTS depends on kernel.h because of REPEAT_BYTE. Moving this to another header and including it where necessary allows us to not include the bloated kernel.h. Making this implicit dependency on REPEAT_BYTE explicit allows for later improvements in the lib/string.c inclusion list. asm-generic: remove extra type checking in acquire/release for non-SMP case
If CONFIG_SMP is not enabled, the smp_load_acquire/smp_store_release is implemented as READ_ONCE/READ_ONCE and barrier() and type checking. READ_ONCE/READ_ONCE already checks the pointer type, and then checks it more stringently outside, but the non-SMP case simply isn't relevant, so remove the extra compiletime_assert_atomic_type() to avoid compilation errors. There's code duplication between the fallback implementation for bitops __ffs/__fls/ffs/fls API and the generic C implementation in include/asm-generic/bitops/. asm-generic: Improve csum_fold
This csum_fold implementation introduced into arch/arc by Vineet Gupta is better than the default implementation on at least arc, x86, and riscv. Using GCC trunk and compiling non-inlined version, this implementation has 41.6667%, 25% fewer instructions on riscv64, x86-64 respectively with -O3 optimization. Most implmentations override this default in asm, but this should be more performant than all of those other implementations except for arm which has barrel shifting and sparc32 which has a carry flag.
