ARM: 5677/1: ARM support for TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK/pselect6/ppoll/epoll_pwait This patch adds support for TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK to ARM's signal handling, which allows to hook up the pselect6, ppoll, and epoll_pwait syscalls on ARM. Tested here with eabi userspace and a test program with a deliberate race between a child's exit and the parent's sigprocmask/select sequence. perf: Do the big rename: Performance Counters -> Performance Events Bye-bye Performance Counters, welcome Performance Events! In the past few months the perfcounters subsystem has grown out its initial role of counting hardware events, and has become (and is becoming) a much broader generic event enumeration, reporting, logging, monitoring, analysis facility. Naming its core object 'perf_counter' and naming the subsystem 'perfcounters' has become more and more of a misnomer. With pending code like hw-breakpoints support the 'counter' name is less and less appropriate. All in one, we've decided to rename the subsystem to 'performance events' and to propagate this rename through all fields, variables and API names. (in an ABI compatible fashion) The word 'event' is also a bit shorter than 'counter' - which makes it slightly more convenient to write/handle as well. Thanks goes to Stephane Eranian who first observed this misnomer and suggested a rename. User-space tooling and ABI compatibility is not affected - this patch should be function-invariant. (Also, defconfigs were not touched to keep the size down.) This patch has been generated via the following script: FILES=$(find * -type f | grep -vE 'oprofile|[^K]config') sed -i \ -e 's/PERF_EVENT_/PERF_RECORD_/g' \ -e 's/PERF_COUNTER/PERF_EVENT/g' \ -e 's/perf_counter/perf_event/g' \ -e 's/nb_counters/nb_events/g' \ -e 's/swcounter/swevent/g' \ -e 's/tpcounter_event/tp_event/g' \ $FILES for N in $(find . -name perf_counter.[ch]); do M=$(echo $N | sed 's/perf_counter/perf_event/g') mv $N $M done FILES=$(find . -name perf_event.*) sed -i \ -e 's/COUNTER_MASK/REG_MASK/g' \ -e 's/COUNTER/EVENT/g' \ -e 's/\<event\>/event_id/g' \ -e 's/counter/event/g' \ -e 's/Counter/Event/g' \ $FILES ... to keep it as correct as possible. This script can also be used by anyone who has pending perfcounters patches - it converts a Linux kernel tree over to the new naming. We tried to time this change to the point in time where the amount of pending patches is the smallest: the end of the merge window. Namespace clashes were fixed up in a preparatory patch - and some stylistic fallout will be fixed up in a subsequent patch. ( NOTE: 'counters' are still the proper terminology when we deal with hardware registers - and these sed scripts are a bit over-eager in renaming them. I've undone some of that, but in case there's something left where 'counter' would be better than 'event' we can undo that on an individual basis instead of touching an otherwise nicely automated patch. ) Suggested-by: Stephane Eranian <eranian@google.com> Acked-by: Peter Zijlstra <a.p.zijlstra@chello.nl> Acked-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org> Reviewed-by: Arjan van de Ven <arjan@linux.intel.com> Cc: Mike Galbraith <efault@gmx.de> Cc: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com> Cc: Frederic Weisbecker <fweisbec@gmail.com> Cc: Steven Rostedt <rostedt@goodmis.org> Cc: Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org> Cc: David Howells <dhowells@redhat.com> Cc: Kyle McMartin <kyle@mcmartin.ca> Cc: Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com> Cc: "David S. [PATCH] ARM: 2651/3: kernel helpers for NPTL support Patch from Nicolas Pitre This patch entirely reworks the kernel assistance for NPTL on ARM. In particular this provides an efficient way to retrieve the TLS value and perform atomic operations without any instruction emulation nor special system call. This even allows for pre ARMv6 binaries to be forward compatible with SMP systems without any penalty. The problematic and performance critical operations are performed through segment of kernel provided user code reachable from user space at a fixed address in kernel memory. Those fixed entry points are within the vector page so we basically get it for free as no extra memory page is required and nothing else may be mapped at that location anyway. This is different from (but doesn't preclude) a full blown VDSO implementation, however a VDSO would prevent some assembly tricks with constants that allows for efficient branching to those code segments. And since those code segments only use a few cycles before returning to user code, the overhead of a VDSO far call would add a significant overhead to such minimalistic operations. The ARM_NR_set_tls syscall also changed number. This is done for two reasons: 1) this patch changes the way the TLS value was previously meant to be retrieved, therefore we ensure whatever library using the old way gets fixed (they only exist in private tree at the moment since the NPTL work is still progressing). 2) the previous number was allocated in a range causing an undefined instruction trap on kernels not supporting that syscall and it was determined that allocating it in a range returning -ENOSYS would be much nicer for libraries trying to determine if the feature is present or not. Using sys_pselect6() instead of sigprocmask/select reliably prevents the race. The other arch's support for TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK has evolved over time: In 2.6.16: - add TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK which parallels TIF_SIGPENDING - test both when checking for pending signal [changed later] - reimplement sys_sigsuspend() to use current->saved_sigmask, TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK [changed later], and -ERESTARTNOHAND; ditto for sys_rt_sigsuspend(), but drop private code and use common code via __ARCH_WANT_SYS_RT_SIGSUSPEND; - there are now no "extra" calls to do_signal() so its oldset parameter is always &current->blocked so need not be passed, also its return value is changed to void - change handle_signal() to return 0/-errno - change do_signal() to honor TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK: + get oldset from current->saved_sigmask if TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK is set + if handle_signal() was successful then clear TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK + if no signal was delivered and TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK is set then clear it and restore the sigmask - hook up sys_pselect6() and sys_ppoll() In 2.6.19: - hook up sys_epoll_pwait() In 2.6.26: - allow archs to override how TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK is implemented; default set_restore_sigmask() sets both TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK and TIF_SIGPENDING; archs need now just test TIF_SIGPENDING again when checking for pending signal work; some archs now implement TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK as a secondary/non-atomic thread flag bit - call set_restore_sigmask() in sys_sigsuspend() instead of setting TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK In 2.6.29-rc: - kill sys_pselect7() which no arch wanted So for 2.6.31-rc6/ARM this patch does the following: - Add TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK. Use the generic set_restore_sigmask() which sets both TIF_SIGPENDING and TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK, so TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK need not claim one of the scarce low thread flags, and existing TIF_SIGPENDING and _TIF_WORK_MASK tests need not be extended for TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK. - sys_sigsuspend() is reimplemented to use current->saved_sigmask and set_restore_sigmask(), making it identical to most other archs - The private code for sys_rt_sigsuspend() is removed, instead generic code supplies it via __ARCH_WANT_SYS_RT_SIGSUSPEND. - sys_sigsuspend() and sys_rt_sigsuspend() no longer need a pt_regs parameter, so their assembly code wrappers are removed. - handle_signal() is changed to return 0 on success or -errno. - The oldset parameter to do_signal() is now redundant and removed, and the return value is now also redundant and changed to void. - do_signal() is changed to honor TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK: + get oldset from current->saved_sigmask if TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK is set + if handle_signal() was successful then clear TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK + if no signal was delivered and TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK is set then clear it and restore the sigmask - Hook up sys_pselect6, sys_ppoll, and sys_epoll_pwait. Add generic sys_ipc wrapper Add a generic implementation of the ipc demultiplexer syscall. Except for s390 and sparc64 all implementations of the sys_ipc are nearly identical. There are slight differences in the types of the parameters, where mips and powerpc as the only 64-bit architectures with sys_ipc use unsigned long for the "third" argument as it gets casted to a pointer later, while it traditionally is an "int" like most other paramters. frv goes even further and uses unsigned long for all parameters execept for "ptr" which is a pointer type everywhere. The change from int to unsigned long for "third" and back to "int" for the others on frv should be fine due to the in-register calling conventions for syscalls (we already had a similar issue with the generic sys_ptrace), but I'd prefer to have the arch maintainers looks over this in details. Except for that h8300, m68k and m68knommu lack an impplementation of the semtimedop sub call which this patch adds, and various architectures have gets used - at least on i386 it seems superflous as the compat code on x86-64 and ia64 doesn't even bother to implement it.
