ext4: xattr-in-inode support Large xattr support is implemented for EXT4_FEATURE_INCOMPAT_EA_INODE. If the size of an xattr value is larger than will fit in a single external block, then the xattr value will be saved into the body of an external xattr inode. The also helps support a larger number of xattr, since only the headers will be stored in the in-inode space or the single external block. The inode is referenced from the xattr header via "e_value_inum", which was formerly "e_value_block", but that field was never used. The e_value_size still contains the xattr size so that listing xattrs does not need to look up the inode if the data is not accessed. struct ext4_xattr_entry { __u8 e_name_len; /* length of name */ __u8 e_name_index; /* attribute name index */ __le16 e_value_offs; /* offset in disk block of value */ __le32 e_value_inum; /* inode in which value is stored */ __le32 e_value_size; /* size of attribute value */ __le32 e_hash; /* hash value of name and value */ char e_name[0]; /* attribute name */ }; The xattr inode is marked with the EXT4_EA_INODE_FL flag and also holds a back-reference to the owning inode in its i_mtime field, allowing the ext4/e2fsck to verify the correct inode is accessed. mm, fs: get rid of PAGE_CACHE_* and page_cache_{get,release} macros PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} macros were introduced *long* time ago with promise that one day it will be possible to implement page cache with bigger chunks than PAGE_SIZE. This promise never materialized. And unlikely will. We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case, especially on the border between fs and mm. Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much breakage to be doable. Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are not. The changes are pretty straight-forward: - <foo> << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - <foo> >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} -> PAGE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN}; - page_cache_get() -> get_page(); - page_cache_release() -> put_page(); This patch contains automated changes generated with coccinelle using script below. For some reason, coccinelle doesn't patch header files. I've called spatch for them manually. The only adjustment after coccinelle is revert of changes to PAGE_CAHCE_ALIGN definition: we are going to drop it later. There are few places in the code where coccinelle didn't reach. I'll fix them manually in a separate patch. mm, fs: get rid of PAGE_CACHE_* and page_cache_{get,release} macros PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} macros were introduced *long* time ago with promise that one day it will be possible to implement page cache with bigger chunks than PAGE_SIZE. This promise never materialized. And unlikely will. We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case, especially on the border between fs and mm. Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much breakage to be doable. Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are not. The changes are pretty straight-forward: - <foo> << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - <foo> >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} -> PAGE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN}; - page_cache_get() -> get_page(); - page_cache_release() -> put_page(); This patch contains automated changes generated with coccinelle using script below. For some reason, coccinelle doesn't patch header files. I've called spatch for them manually. The only adjustment after coccinelle is revert of changes to PAGE_CAHCE_ALIGN definition: we are going to drop it later. There are few places in the code where coccinelle didn't reach. I'll fix them manually in a separate patch. Comments and documentation also will be addressed with the separate patch. virtual patch @@ expression E; @@ - E << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) + E @@ expression E; @@ - E >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) + E @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT + PAGE_SHIFT @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_SIZE + PAGE_SIZE @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_MASK + PAGE_MASK @@ expression E; @@ - PAGE_CACHE_ALIGN(E) + PAGE_ALIGN(E) @@ expression E; @@ - page_cache_get(E) + get_page(E) @@ expression E; @@ - page_cache_release(E) + put_page(E) Signed-off-by: Kirill A. The deadlock can be reproduced via: dmesg -n 7 mke2fs -t ext4 -O inline_data -Fq -I 256 /dev/vdc 32768 mount -t ext4 -o debug_want_extra_isize=24 /dev/vdc /vdc mkdir /vdc/a umount /vdc mount -t ext4 /dev/vdc /vdc echo foo > /vdc/a/foo and looks like this: [ 11.158815] [ 11.160276] ============================================= [ 11.161960] [ INFO: possible recursive locking detected ] [ 11.161960] 4.10.0-rc3-00015-g011b30a8a3cf #160 Tainted: G W [ 11.161960] --------------------------------------------- [ 11.161960] bash/2519 is trying to acquire lock: [ 11.161960] (&ei->xattr_sem){++++..}, at: [<c1225a4b>] ext4_expand_extra_isize_ea+0x3d/0x4cd [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] but task is already holding lock: [ 11.161960] (&ei->xattr_sem){++++..}, at: [<c1227941>] ext4_try_add_inline_entry+0x3a/0x152 [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] other info that might help us debug this: [ 11.161960] Possible unsafe locking scenario: [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] CPU0 [ 11.161960] ---- [ 11.161960] lock(&ei->xattr_sem); [ 11.161960] lock(&ei->xattr_sem); [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] *** DEADLOCK *** [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] May be due to missing lock nesting notation [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] 4 locks held by bash/2519: [ 11.161960] #0: (sb_writers#3){.+.+.+}, at: [<c11a2414>] mnt_want_write+0x1e/0x3e [ 11.161960] #1: (&type->i_mutex_dir_key){++++++}, at: [<c119508b>] path_openat+0x338/0x67a [ 11.161960] #2: (jbd2_handle){++++..}, at: [<c123314a>] start_this_handle+0x582/0x622 [ 11.161960] #3: (&ei->xattr_sem){++++..}, at: [<c1227941>] ext4_try_add_inline_entry+0x3a/0x152 [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] stack backtrace: [ 11.161960] CPU: 0 PID: 2519 Comm: bash Tainted: G W 4.10.0-rc3-00015-g011b30a8a3cf #160 [ 11.161960] Hardware name: QEMU Standard PC (i440FX + PIIX, 1996), BIOS 1.10.1-1 04/01/2014 [ 11.161960] Call Trace: [ 11.161960] dump_stack+0x72/0xa3 [ 11.161960] __lock_acquire+0xb7c/0xcb9 [ 11.161960] ? kvm_clock_read+0x1f/0x29 [ 11.161960] ? __lock_is_held+0x36/0x66 [ 11.161960] ? __lock_is_held+0x36/0x66 [ 11.161960] lock_acquire+0x106/0x18a [ 11.161960] ? ext4_expand_extra_isize_ea+0x3d/0x4cd [ 11.161960] down_write+0x39/0x72 [ 11.161960] ? ext4_expand_extra_isize_ea+0x3d/0x4cd [ 11.161960] ext4_expand_extra_isize_ea+0x3d/0x4cd [ 11.161960] ? _raw_read_unlock+0x22/0x2c [ 11.161960] ? jbd2_journal_extend+0x1e2/0x262 [ 11.161960] ? __ext4_journal_get_write_access+0x3d/0x60 [ 11.161960] ext4_mark_inode_dirty+0x17d/0x26d [ 11.161960] ? ext4_add_dirent_to_inline.isra.12+0xa5/0xb2 [ 11.161960] ext4_add_dirent_to_inline.isra.12+0xa5/0xb2 [ 11.161960] ext4_try_add_inline_entry+0x69/0x152 [ 11.161960] ext4_add_entry+0xa3/0x848 [ 11.161960] ? __brelse+0x14/0x2f [ 11.161960] ? _raw_spin_unlock_irqrestore+0x44/0x4f [ 11.161960] ext4_add_nondir+0x17/0x5b [ 11.161960] ext4_create+0xcf/0x133 [ 11.161960] ? ext4_mknod+0x12f/0x12f [ 11.161960] lookup_open+0x39e/0x3fb [ 11.161960] ? __wake_up+0x1a/0x40 [ 11.161960] ? lock_acquire+0x11e/0x18a [ 11.161960] path_openat+0x35c/0x67a [ 11.161960] ? sched_clock_cpu+0xd7/0xf2 [ 11.161960] do_filp_open+0x36/0x7c [ 11.161960] ? _raw_spin_unlock+0x22/0x2c [ 11.161960] ? __alloc_fd+0x169/0x173 [ 11.161960] do_sys_open+0x59/0xcc [ 11.161960] SyS_open+0x1d/0x1f [ 11.161960] do_int80_syscall_32+0x4f/0x61 [ 11.161960] entry_INT80_32+0x2f/0x2f [ 11.161960] EIP: 0xb76ad469 [ 11.161960] EFLAGS: 00000286 CPU: 0 [ 11.161960] EAX: ffffffda EBX: 08168ac8 ECX: 00008241 EDX: 000001b6 [ 11.161960] ESI: b75e46bc EDI: b7755000 EBP: bfbdb108 ESP: bfbdafc0 [ 11.161960] DS: 007b ES: 007b FS: 0000 GS: 0033 SS: 007b Cc: stable@vger.kernel.org # 3.10 (requires 2e81a4eeedca as a prereq) Reported-by: George Spelvin <linux@sciencehorizons.net> Signed-off-by: Theodore Ts'o <tytso@mit.edu>

mm, fs: get rid of PAGE_CACHE_* and page_cache_{get,release} macros PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} macros were introduced *long* time ago with promise that one day it will be possible to implement page cache with bigger chunks than PAGE_SIZE. This promise never materialized. And unlikely will. We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case, especially on the border between fs and mm. Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much breakage to be doable. Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are not. The changes are pretty straight-forward: - <foo> << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - <foo> >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} -> PAGE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN}; - page_cache_get() -> get_page(); - page_cache_release() -> put_page(); This patch contains automated changes generated with coccinelle using script below. For some reason, coccinelle doesn't patch header files. I've called spatch for them manually. The only adjustment after coccinelle is revert of changes to PAGE_CAHCE_ALIGN definition: we are going to drop it later. There are few places in the code where coccinelle didn't reach. I'll fix them manually in a separate patch. The deadlock can be reproduced via: dmesg -n 7 mke2fs -t ext4 -O inline_data -Fq -I 256 /dev/vdc 32768 mount -t ext4 -o debug_want_extra_isize=24 /dev/vdc /vdc mkdir /vdc/a umount /vdc mount -t ext4 /dev/vdc /vdc echo foo > /vdc/a/foo and looks like this: [ 11.158815] [ 11.160276] ============================================= [ 11.161960] [ INFO: possible recursive locking detected ] [ 11.161960] 4.10.0-rc3-00015-g011b30a8a3cf #160 Tainted: G W [ 11.161960] --------------------------------------------- [ 11.161960] bash/2519 is trying to acquire lock: [ 11.161960] (&ei->xattr_sem){++++..}, at: [<c1225a4b>] ext4_expand_extra_isize_ea+0x3d/0x4cd [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] but task is already holding lock: [ 11.161960] (&ei->xattr_sem){++++..}, at: [<c1227941>] ext4_try_add_inline_entry+0x3a/0x152 [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] other info that might help us debug this: [ 11.161960] Possible unsafe locking scenario: [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] CPU0 [ 11.161960] ---- [ 11.161960] lock(&ei->xattr_sem); [ 11.161960] lock(&ei->xattr_sem); [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] *** DEADLOCK *** [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] May be due to missing lock nesting notation [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] 4 locks held by bash/2519: [ 11.161960] #0: (sb_writers#3){.+.+.+}, at: [<c11a2414>] mnt_want_write+0x1e/0x3e [ 11.161960] #1: (&type->i_mutex_dir_key){++++++}, at: [<c119508b>] path_openat+0x338/0x67a [ 11.161960] #2: (jbd2_handle){++++..}, at: [<c123314a>] start_this_handle+0x582/0x622 [ 11.161960] #3: (&ei->xattr_sem){++++..}, at: [<c1227941>] ext4_try_add_inline_entry+0x3a/0x152 [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] stack backtrace: [ 11.161960] CPU: 0 PID: 2519 Comm: bash Tainted: G W 4.10.0-rc3-00015-g011b30a8a3cf #160 [ 11.161960] Hardware name: QEMU Standard PC (i440FX + PIIX, 1996), BIOS 1.10.1-1 04/01/2014 [ 11.161960] Call Trace: [ 11.161960] dump_stack+0x72/0xa3 [ 11.161960] __lock_acquire+0xb7c/0xcb9 [ 11.161960] ? kvm_clock_read+0x1f/0x29 [ 11.161960] ? __lock_is_held+0x36/0x66 [ 11.161960] ? __lock_is_held+0x36/0x66 [ 11.161960] lock_acquire+0x106/0x18a [ 11.161960] ? ext4_expand_extra_isize_ea+0x3d/0x4cd [ 11.161960] down_write+0x39/0x72 [ 11.161960] ? ext4_expand_extra_isize_ea+0x3d/0x4cd [ 11.161960] ext4_expand_extra_isize_ea+0x3d/0x4cd [ 11.161960] ? _raw_read_unlock+0x22/0x2c [ 11.161960] ? jbd2_journal_extend+0x1e2/0x262 [ 11.161960] ? __ext4_journal_get_write_access+0x3d/0x60 [ 11.161960] ext4_mark_inode_dirty+0x17d/0x26d [ 11.161960] ? ext4_add_dirent_to_inline.isra.12+0xa5/0xb2 [ 11.161960] ext4_add_dirent_to_inline.isra.12+0xa5/0xb2 [ 11.161960] ext4_try_add_inline_entry+0x69/0x152 [ 11.161960] ext4_add_entry+0xa3/0x848 [ 11.161960] ? __brelse+0x14/0x2f [ 11.161960] ? _raw_spin_unlock_irqrestore+0x44/0x4f [ 11.161960] ext4_add_nondir+0x17/0x5b [ 11.161960] ext4_create+0xcf/0x133 [ 11.161960] ? ext4_mknod+0x12f/0x12f [ 11.161960] lookup_open+0x39e/0x3fb [ 11.161960] ? __wake_up+0x1a/0x40 [ 11.161960] ? lock_acquire+0x11e/0x18a [ 11.161960] path_openat+0x35c/0x67a [ 11.161960] ? sched_clock_cpu+0xd7/0xf2 [ 11.161960] do_filp_open+0x36/0x7c [ 11.161960] ? _raw_spin_unlock+0x22/0x2c [ 11.161960] ? __alloc_fd+0x169/0x173 [ 11.161960] do_sys_open+0x59/0xcc [ 11.161960] SyS_open+0x1d/0x1f [ 11.161960] do_int80_syscall_32+0x4f/0x61 [ 11.161960] entry_INT80_32+0x2f/0x2f [ 11.161960] EIP: 0xb76ad469 [ 11.161960] EFLAGS: 00000286 CPU: 0 [ 11.161960] EAX: ffffffda EBX: 08168ac8 ECX: 00008241 EDX: 000001b6 [ 11.161960] ESI: b75e46bc EDI: b7755000 EBP: bfbdb108 ESP: bfbdafc0 [ 11.161960] DS: 007b ES: 007b FS: 0000 GS: 0033 SS: 007b Cc: stable@vger.kernel.org # 3.10 (requires 2e81a4eeedca as a prereq) Reported-by: George Spelvin <linux@sciencehorizons.net> Signed-off-by: Theodore Ts'o <tytso@mit.edu>

The deadlock can be reproduced via: dmesg -n 7 mke2fs -t ext4 -O inline_data -Fq -I 256 /dev/vdc 32768 mount -t ext4 -o debug_want_extra_isize=24 /dev/vdc /vdc mkdir /vdc/a umount /vdc mount -t ext4 /dev/vdc /vdc echo foo > /vdc/a/foo and looks like this: [ 11.158815] [ 11.160276] ============================================= [ 11.161960] [ INFO: possible recursive locking detected ] [ 11.161960] 4.10.0-rc3-00015-g011b30a8a3cf #160 Tainted: G W [ 11.161960] --------------------------------------------- [ 11.161960] bash/2519 is trying to acquire lock: [ 11.161960] (&ei->xattr_sem){++++..}, at: [<c1225a4b>] ext4_expand_extra_isize_ea+0x3d/0x4cd [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] but task is already holding lock: [ 11.161960] (&ei->xattr_sem){++++..}, at: [<c1227941>] ext4_try_add_inline_entry+0x3a/0x152 [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] other info that might help us debug this: [ 11.161960] Possible unsafe locking scenario: [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] CPU0 [ 11.161960] ---- [ 11.161960] lock(&ei->xattr_sem); [ 11.161960] lock(&ei->xattr_sem); [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] *** DEADLOCK *** [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] May be due to missing lock nesting notation [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] 4 locks held by bash/2519: [ 11.161960] #0: (sb_writers#3){.+.+.+}, at: [<c11a2414>] mnt_want_write+0x1e/0x3e [ 11.161960] #1: (&type->i_mutex_dir_key){++++++}, at: [<c119508b>] path_openat+0x338/0x67a [ 11.161960] #2: (jbd2_handle){++++..}, at: [<c123314a>] start_this_handle+0x582/0x622 [ 11.161960] #3: (&ei->xattr_sem){++++..}, at: [<c1227941>] ext4_try_add_inline_entry+0x3a/0x152 [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] stack backtrace: [ 11.161960] CPU: 0 PID: 2519 Comm: bash Tainted: G W 4.10.0-rc3-00015-g011b30a8a3cf #160 [ 11.161960] Hardware name: QEMU Standard PC (i440FX + PIIX, 1996), BIOS 1.10.1-1 04/01/2014 [ 11.161960] Call Trace: [ 11.161960] dump_stack+0x72/0xa3 [ 11.161960] __lock_acquire+0xb7c/0xcb9 [ 11.161960] ? kvm_clock_read+0x1f/0x29 [ 11.161960] ? __lock_is_held+0x36/0x66 [ 11.161960] ? __lock_is_held+0x36/0x66 [ 11.161960] lock_acquire+0x106/0x18a [ 11.161960] ? ext4_expand_extra_isize_ea+0x3d/0x4cd [ 11.161960] down_write+0x39/0x72 [ 11.161960] ? ext4_expand_extra_isize_ea+0x3d/0x4cd [ 11.161960] ext4_expand_extra_isize_ea+0x3d/0x4cd [ 11.161960] ? _raw_read_unlock+0x22/0x2c [ 11.161960] ? jbd2_journal_extend+0x1e2/0x262 [ 11.161960] ? __ext4_journal_get_write_access+0x3d/0x60 [ 11.161960] ext4_mark_inode_dirty+0x17d/0x26d [ 11.161960] ? ext4_add_dirent_to_inline.isra.12+0xa5/0xb2 [ 11.161960] ext4_add_dirent_to_inline.isra.12+0xa5/0xb2 [ 11.161960] ext4_try_add_inline_entry+0x69/0x152 [ 11.161960] ext4_add_entry+0xa3/0x848 [ 11.161960] ? __brelse+0x14/0x2f [ 11.161960] ? _raw_spin_unlock_irqrestore+0x44/0x4f [ 11.161960] ext4_add_nondir+0x17/0x5b [ 11.161960] ext4_create+0xcf/0x133 [ 11.161960] ? ext4_mknod+0x12f/0x12f [ 11.161960] lookup_open+0x39e/0x3fb [ 11.161960] ? __wake_up+0x1a/0x40 [ 11.161960] ? lock_acquire+0x11e/0x18a [ 11.161960] path_openat+0x35c/0x67a [ 11.161960] ? sched_clock_cpu+0xd7/0xf2 [ 11.161960] do_filp_open+0x36/0x7c [ 11.161960] ? _raw_spin_unlock+0x22/0x2c [ 11.161960] ? __alloc_fd+0x169/0x173 [ 11.161960] do_sys_open+0x59/0xcc [ 11.161960] SyS_open+0x1d/0x1f [ 11.161960] do_int80_syscall_32+0x4f/0x61 [ 11.161960] entry_INT80_32+0x2f/0x2f [ 11.161960] EIP: 0xb76ad469 [ 11.161960] EFLAGS: 00000286 CPU: 0 [ 11.161960] EAX: ffffffda EBX: 08168ac8 ECX: 00008241 EDX: 000001b6 [ 11.161960] ESI: b75e46bc EDI: b7755000 EBP: bfbdb108 ESP: bfbdafc0 [ 11.161960] DS: 007b ES: 007b FS: 0000 GS: 0033 SS: 007b Cc: stable@vger.kernel.org # 3.10 (requires 2e81a4eeedca as a prereq) Reported-by: George Spelvin <linux@sciencehorizons.net> Signed-off-by: Theodore Ts'o <tytso@mit.edu>

mm, fs: get rid of PAGE_CACHE_* and page_cache_{get,release} macros PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} macros were introduced *long* time ago with promise that one day it will be possible to implement page cache with bigger chunks than PAGE_SIZE. This promise never materialized. And unlikely will. We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case, especially on the border between fs and mm. Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much breakage to be doable. Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are not. The changes are pretty straight-forward: - <foo> << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - <foo> >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} -> PAGE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN}; - page_cache_get() -> get_page(); - page_cache_release() -> put_page(); This patch contains automated changes generated with coccinelle using script below. For some reason, coccinelle doesn't patch header files. I've called spatch for them manually. The only adjustment after coccinelle is revert of changes to PAGE_CAHCE_ALIGN definition: we are going to drop it later. There are few places in the code where coccinelle didn't reach. I'll fix them manually in a separate patch. ext4: fix deadlock between inline_data and ext4_expand_extra_isize_ea() The xattr_sem deadlock problems fixed in commit 2e81a4eeedca: "ext4: avoid deadlock when expanding inode size" didn't include the use of xattr_sem in fs/ext4/inline.c. With the addition of project quota which added a new extra inode field, this exposed deadlocks in the inline_data code similar to the ones fixed by 2e81a4eeedca. The deadlock can be reproduced via: dmesg -n 7 mke2fs -t ext4 -O inline_data -Fq -I 256 /dev/vdc 32768 mount -t ext4 -o debug_want_extra_isize=24 /dev/vdc /vdc mkdir /vdc/a umount /vdc mount -t ext4 /dev/vdc /vdc echo foo > /vdc/a/foo and looks like this: [ 11.158815] [ 11.160276] ============================================= [ 11.161960] [ INFO: possible recursive locking detected ] [ 11.161960] 4.10.0-rc3-00015-g011b30a8a3cf #160 Tainted: G W [ 11.161960] --------------------------------------------- [ 11.161960] bash/2519 is trying to acquire lock: [ 11.161960] (&ei->xattr_sem){++++..}, at: [<c1225a4b>] ext4_expand_extra_isize_ea+0x3d/0x4cd [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] but task is already holding lock: [ 11.161960] (&ei->xattr_sem){++++..}, at: [<c1227941>] ext4_try_add_inline_entry+0x3a/0x152 [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] other info that might help us debug this: [ 11.161960] Possible unsafe locking scenario: [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] CPU0 [ 11.161960] ---- [ 11.161960] lock(&ei->xattr_sem); [ 11.161960] lock(&ei->xattr_sem); [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] *** DEADLOCK *** [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] May be due to missing lock nesting notation [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] 4 locks held by bash/2519: [ 11.161960] #0: (sb_writers#3){.+.+.+}, at: [<c11a2414>] mnt_want_write+0x1e/0x3e [ 11.161960] #1: (&type->i_mutex_dir_key){++++++}, at: [<c119508b>] path_openat+0x338/0x67a [ 11.161960] #2: (jbd2_handle){++++..}, at: [<c123314a>] start_this_handle+0x582/0x622 [ 11.161960] #3: (&ei->xattr_sem){++++..}, at: [<c1227941>] ext4_try_add_inline_entry+0x3a/0x152 [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] stack backtrace: [ 11.161960] CPU: 0 PID: 2519 Comm: bash Tainted: G W 4.10.0-rc3-00015-g011b30a8a3cf #160 [ 11.161960] Hardware name: QEMU Standard PC (i440FX + PIIX, 1996), BIOS 1.10.1-1 04/01/2014 [ 11.161960] Call Trace: [ 11.161960] dump_stack+0x72/0xa3 [ 11.161960] __lock_acquire+0xb7c/0xcb9 [ 11.161960] ? kvm_clock_read+0x1f/0x29 [ 11.161960] ? __lock_is_held+0x36/0x66 [ 11.161960] ? __lock_is_held+0x36/0x66 [ 11.161960] lock_acquire+0x106/0x18a [ 11.161960] ? ext4_expand_extra_isize_ea+0x3d/0x4cd [ 11.161960] down_write+0x39/0x72 [ 11.161960] ? ext4_expand_extra_isize_ea+0x3d/0x4cd [ 11.161960] ext4_expand_extra_isize_ea+0x3d/0x4cd [ 11.161960] ? _raw_read_unlock+0x22/0x2c [ 11.161960] ? jbd2_journal_extend+0x1e2/0x262 [ 11.161960] ? __ext4_journal_get_write_access+0x3d/0x60 [ 11.161960] ext4_mark_inode_dirty+0x17d/0x26d [ 11.161960] ? ext4_add_dirent_to_inline.isra.12+0xa5/0xb2 [ 11.161960] ext4_add_dirent_to_inline.isra.12+0xa5/0xb2 [ 11.161960] ext4_try_add_inline_entry+0x69/0x152 [ 11.161960] ext4_add_entry+0xa3/0x848 [ 11.161960] ? __brelse+0x14/0x2f [ 11.161960] ? _raw_spin_unlock_irqrestore+0x44/0x4f [ 11.161960] ext4_add_nondir+0x17/0x5b [ 11.161960] ext4_create+0xcf/0x133 [ 11.161960] ? ext4_mknod+0x12f/0x12f [ 11.161960] lookup_open+0x39e/0x3fb [ 11.161960] ? __wake_up+0x1a/0x40 [ 11.161960] ? lock_acquire+0x11e/0x18a [ 11.161960] path_openat+0x35c/0x67a [ 11.161960] ? sched_clock_cpu+0xd7/0xf2 [ 11.161960] do_filp_open+0x36/0x7c [ 11.161960] ? _raw_spin_unlock+0x22/0x2c [ 11.161960] ? __alloc_fd+0x169/0x173 [ 11.161960] do_sys_open+0x59/0xcc [ 11.161960] SyS_open+0x1d/0x1f [ 11.161960] do_int80_syscall_32+0x4f/0x61 [ 11.161960] entry_INT80_32+0x2f/0x2f [ 11.161960] EIP: 0xb76ad469 [ 11.161960] EFLAGS: 00000286 CPU: 0 [ 11.161960] EAX: ffffffda EBX: 08168ac8 ECX: 00008241 EDX: 000001b6 [ 11.161960] ESI: b75e46bc EDI: b7755000 EBP: bfbdb108 ESP: bfbdafc0 [ 11.161960] DS: 007b ES: 007b FS: 0000 GS: 0033 SS: 007b Cc: stable@vger.kernel.org # 3.10 (requires 2e81a4eeedca as a prereq) Reported-by: George Spelvin <linux@sciencehorizons.net> Signed-off-by: Theodore Ts'o <tytso@mit.edu>

ext4: Support case-insensitive file name lookups This patch implements the actual support for case-insensitive file name lookups in ext4, based on the feature bit and the encoding stored in the superblock. A filesystem that has the casefold feature set is able to configure directories with the +F (EXT4_CASEFOLD_FL) attribute, enabling lookups to succeed in that directory in a case-insensitive fashion, i.e: match a directory entry even if the name used by userspace is not a byte per byte match with the disk name, but is an equivalent case-insensitive version of the Unicode string. This operation is called a case-insensitive file name lookup. The feature is configured as an inode attribute applied to directories and inherited by its children. This attribute can only be enabled on empty directories for filesystems that support the encoding feature, thus preventing collision of file names that only differ by case. * dcache handling: For a +F directory, Ext4 only stores the first equivalent name dentry used in the dcache. This is done to prevent unintentional duplication of dentries in the dcache, while also allowing the VFS code to quickly find the right entry in the cache despite which equivalent string was used in a previous lookup, without having to resort to ->lookup(). d_hash() of casefolded directories is implemented as the hash of the casefolded string, such that we always have a well-known bucket for all the equivalencies of the same string. d_compare() uses the utf8_strncasecmp() infrastructure, which handles the comparison of equivalent, same case, names as well. For now, negative lookups are not inserted in the dcache, since they would need to be invalidated anyway, because we can't trust missing file dentries. This is bad for performance but requires some leveraging of the vfs layer to fix. We can live without that for now, and so does everyone else. * on-disk data: Despite using a specific version of the name as the internal representation within the dcache, the name stored and fetched from the disk is a byte-per-byte match with what the user requested, making this implementation 'name-preserving'. i.e. no actual information is lost when writing to storage. DX is supported by modifying the hashes used in +F directories to make them case/encoding-aware. The new disk hashes are calculated as the hash of the full casefolded string, instead of the string directly. This allows us to efficiently search for file names in the htree without requiring the user to provide an exact name. * Dealing with invalid sequences: By default, when a invalid UTF-8 sequence is identified, ext4 will treat it as an opaque byte sequence, ignoring the encoding and reverting to the old behavior for that unique file. This means that case-insensitive file name lookup will not work only for that file. An optional bit can be set in the superblock telling the filesystem code and userspace tools to enforce the encoding. When that optional bit is set, any attempt to create a file name using an invalid UTF-8 sequence will fail and return an error to userspace. * Normalization algorithm: The UTF-8 algorithms used to compare strings in ext4 is implemented lives in fs/unicode, and is based on a previous version developed by SGI. It implements the Canonical decomposition (NFD) algorithm described by the Unicode specification 12.1, or higher, combined with the elimination of ignorable code points (NFDi) and full case-folding (CF) as documented in fs/unicode/utf8_norm.c. NFD seems to be the best normalization method for EXT4 because: - It has a lower cost than NFC/NFKC (which requires decomposing to NFD as an intermediary step) - It doesn't eliminate important semantic meaning like compatibility decompositions. Although: - This implementation is not completely linguistic accurate, because different languages have conflicting rules, which would require the specialization of the filesystem to a given locale, which brings all sorts of problems for removable media and for users who use more than one language. The deadlock can be reproduced via: dmesg -n 7 mke2fs -t ext4 -O inline_data -Fq -I 256 /dev/vdc 32768 mount -t ext4 -o debug_want_extra_isize=24 /dev/vdc /vdc mkdir /vdc/a umount /vdc mount -t ext4 /dev/vdc /vdc echo foo > /vdc/a/foo and looks like this: [ 11.158815] [ 11.160276] ============================================= [ 11.161960] [ INFO: possible recursive locking detected ] [ 11.161960] 4.10.0-rc3-00015-g011b30a8a3cf #160 Tainted: G W [ 11.161960] --------------------------------------------- [ 11.161960] bash/2519 is trying to acquire lock: [ 11.161960] (&ei->xattr_sem){++++..}, at: [<c1225a4b>] ext4_expand_extra_isize_ea+0x3d/0x4cd [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] but task is already holding lock: [ 11.161960] (&ei->xattr_sem){++++..}, at: [<c1227941>] ext4_try_add_inline_entry+0x3a/0x152 [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] other info that might help us debug this: [ 11.161960] Possible unsafe locking scenario: [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] CPU0 [ 11.161960] ---- [ 11.161960] lock(&ei->xattr_sem); [ 11.161960] lock(&ei->xattr_sem); [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] *** DEADLOCK *** [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] May be due to missing lock nesting notation [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] 4 locks held by bash/2519: [ 11.161960] #0: (sb_writers#3){.+.+.+}, at: [<c11a2414>] mnt_want_write+0x1e/0x3e [ 11.161960] #1: (&type->i_mutex_dir_key){++++++}, at: [<c119508b>] path_openat+0x338/0x67a [ 11.161960] #2: (jbd2_handle){++++..}, at: [<c123314a>] start_this_handle+0x582/0x622 [ 11.161960] #3: (&ei->xattr_sem){++++..}, at: [<c1227941>] ext4_try_add_inline_entry+0x3a/0x152 [ 11.161960] [ 11.161960] stack backtrace: [ 11.161960] CPU: 0 PID: 2519 Comm: bash Tainted: G W 4.10.0-rc3-00015-g011b30a8a3cf #160 [ 11.161960] Hardware name: QEMU Standard PC (i440FX + PIIX, 1996), BIOS 1.10.1-1 04/01/2014 [ 11.161960] Call Trace: [ 11.161960] dump_stack+0x72/0xa3 [ 11.161960] __lock_acquire+0xb7c/0xcb9 [ 11.161960] ? kvm_clock_read+0x1f/0x29 [ 11.161960] ? __lock_is_held+0x36/0x66 [ 11.161960] ? __lock_is_held+0x36/0x66 [ 11.161960] lock_acquire+0x106/0x18a [ 11.161960] ? ext4_expand_extra_isize_ea+0x3d/0x4cd [ 11.161960] down_write+0x39/0x72 [ 11.161960] ? ext4_expand_extra_isize_ea+0x3d/0x4cd [ 11.161960] ext4_expand_extra_isize_ea+0x3d/0x4cd [ 11.161960] ? _raw_read_unlock+0x22/0x2c [ 11.161960] ? jbd2_journal_extend+0x1e2/0x262 [ 11.161960] ? __ext4_journal_get_write_access+0x3d/0x60 [ 11.161960] ext4_mark_inode_dirty+0x17d/0x26d [ 11.161960] ? ext4_add_dirent_to_inline.isra.12+0xa5/0xb2 [ 11.161960] ext4_add_dirent_to_inline.isra.12+0xa5/0xb2 [ 11.161960] ext4_try_add_inline_entry+0x69/0x152 [ 11.161960] ext4_add_entry+0xa3/0x848 [ 11.161960] ? __brelse+0x14/0x2f [ 11.161960] ? _raw_spin_unlock_irqrestore+0x44/0x4f [ 11.161960] ext4_add_nondir+0x17/0x5b [ 11.161960] ext4_create+0xcf/0x133 [ 11.161960] ? ext4_mknod+0x12f/0x12f [ 11.161960] lookup_open+0x39e/0x3fb [ 11.161960] ? __wake_up+0x1a/0x40 [ 11.161960] ? lock_acquire+0x11e/0x18a [ 11.161960] path_openat+0x35c/0x67a [ 11.161960] ? sched_clock_cpu+0xd7/0xf2 [ 11.161960] do_filp_open+0x36/0x7c [ 11.161960] ? _raw_spin_unlock+0x22/0x2c [ 11.161960] ? __alloc_fd+0x169/0x173 [ 11.161960] do_sys_open+0x59/0xcc [ 11.161960] SyS_open+0x1d/0x1f [ 11.161960] do_int80_syscall_32+0x4f/0x61 [ 11.161960] entry_INT80_32+0x2f/0x2f [ 11.161960] EIP: 0xb76ad469 [ 11.161960] EFLAGS: 00000286 CPU: 0 [ 11.161960] EAX: ffffffda EBX: 08168ac8 ECX: 00008241 EDX: 000001b6 [ 11.161960] ESI: b75e46bc EDI: b7755000 EBP: bfbdb108 ESP: bfbdafc0 [ 11.161960] DS: 007b ES: 007b FS: 0000 GS: 0033 SS: 007b Cc: stable@vger.kernel.org # 3.10 (requires 2e81a4eeedca as a prereq) Reported-by: George Spelvin <linux@sciencehorizons.net> Signed-off-by: Theodore Ts'o <tytso@mit.edu>
