Dag-Erling Smørgrav 44101eb580 install: Always use a temporary file. Previously, we would only use a temporary file if explicitly asked to with the `-S` option, and even then, only if the target file already existed. This meant that an outside observer looking for the target file might see a partial file, and might see the file disappear and then reappear. With this patch, we always use a temporary file, ensuring atomicity. The downside is slightly increased disk usage. The upside is never having to worry about, for instance, cron jobs randomly failing if they happen to run simultaneously with `make installworld`. The `-S` option is retained, partly for compatibility, and partly to control the use of `fsync(2)`, which has a non-negligible cost (approximately 10% increase in wall time for `make installworld`). There's no need to copy the path twice to split it into base and dir. We simply call `basename()` first, then handle the two trivial cases in which it isn't safe to call `dirname()`. FreeBSD Source:

This is the top level of the FreeBSD source directory.

FreeBSD is an operating system used to power modern servers, desktops, and embedded platforms. A large community has continually developed it for more than thirty years. Its advanced networking, security, and storage features have made FreeBSD the platform of choice for many of the busiest web sites and most pervasive embedded networking and storage devices.

For copyright information, please see the file COPYRIGHT in this directory. Additional copyright information also exists for some sources in this tree - please see the specific source directories for more information.

The Makefile in this directory supports a number of targets for building components (or all) of the FreeBSD source tree. See build(7), config(8), FreeBSD handbook on building userland, and Handbook for kernels for more information, including setting make(1) variables.
