uio segment is empty. In this case no dma segment is create by
bus_dmamap_load_buffer, but the calling routine clears the first flag.
Under certain combinations of addresses of the first and second mbuf/uio
buffer this leads to corrupted DMA segment descriptors. This was already
fixed by tmm in sparc64/sparc64/iommu.c.

statclock based on profhz when profiling is enabled MD, since most platforms
don't use this anyway. This removes the need for statclock_process, whose
only purpose was to subdivide profhz, and gets the profiling clock running
outside of sched_lock on platforms that implement suswintr.
Also changed the interface for starting and stopping the profiling clock to
do just that, instead of changing the rate of statclock, since they can now
be separate.

I'm not convinced there is anything major wrong with the patch but
them's the rules..
I am using my "David's mentor" hat to revert this as he's
offline for a while.
counterparts to bus_dmamem_alloc() and bus_dmamem_free(). This allows
the caller to specify the size of the allocation instead of it defaulting
to the max_size field of the busdma tag.
This is intended to aid in converting drivers to busdma. Lots of
hardware cannot understand scatter/gather lists, which forces the
driver to copy the i/o buffers to a single contiguous region
before sending it to the hardware. Without these new methods, this
would require a new busdma tag for each operation, or a complex
internal allocator/cache for each driver.
Allocations greater than PAGE_SIZE are rounded up to the next
PAGE_SIZE by contigmalloc(), so this is not suitable for multiple
static allocations that would be better served by a single
fixed-length subdivided allocation.

data structure called kse_upcall to manage UPCALL. All KSE binding
and loaning code are gone.
A thread owns an upcall can collect all completed syscall contexts in
its ksegrp, turn itself into UPCALL mode, and takes those contexts back
to userland. Any thread without upcall structure has to export their
contexts and exit at user boundary.
Any thread running in user mode owns an upcall structure, when it enters
kernel, if the kse mailbox's current thread pointer is not NULL, then
when the thread is blocked in kernel, a new UPCALL thread is created and
the upcall structure is transfered to the new UPCALL thread. if the kse
mailbox's current thread pointer is NULL, then when a thread is blocked
in kernel, no UPCALL thread will be created.
Each upcall always has an owner thread. Userland can remove an upcall by
calling kse_exit, when all upcalls in ksegrp are removed, the group is
atomatically shutdown. An upcall owner thread also exits when process is
in exiting state. when an owner thread exits, the upcall it owns is also
removed.
KSE is a pure scheduler entity. it represents a virtual cpu. when a thread
is running, it always has a KSE associated with it. scheduler is free to
assign a KSE to thread according thread priority, if thread priority is changed,
KSE can be moved from one thread to another.
When a ksegrp is created, there is always N KSEs created in the group. the
N is the number of physical cpu in the current system. This makes it is
possible that even an userland UTS is single CPU safe, threads in kernel still
can execute on different cpu in parallel. Userland calls kse_create to add more
upcall structures into ksegrp to increase concurrent in userland itself, kernel
is not restricted by number of upcalls userland provides.
The code hasn't been tested under SMP by author due to lack of hardware.

metadata. This fixes module dependency resolution by the kernel linker on
sparc64, where the relocations for the metadata are different than on other
architectures; the relative offset is in the addend of an Elf_Rela record
instead of the original value of the location being patched.

This is precursor work to a reorganization of vmapbuf() to close remaining
user/kernel races (which can lead to a panic).
pointer types, and remove a huge number of casts from code using it.
Change struct xfile xf_data to xun_data (ABI is still compatible).
If we need to add a #define for f_data and xf_data we can, but I don't
think it will be necessary. There are no operational changes in this
commit.
Hold the page queues lock when calling pmap_unwire_pte_hold() or
pmap_remove_pte(). Use vm_page_sleep_if_busy() in
_pmap_unwire_pte_hold() so that the page queues lock is released
when sleeping.
i386 cpu_thread_exit(). This resulted in a panic with WITNESS
since we need to hold Giant to call kmem_free(), and we weren't
helding it anymore in cpu_thread_exit(). We now do this from a
new MD function, cpu_thread_dtor(), called by thread_dtor().

- Clear the PG_WRITEABLE flag in pmap_changebit() if write access is
being removed. Return immediately if write access is being removed and
PG_WRITEABLE is already clear.
Note: For efficiency, pmap_changebit() should be replaced by a function
similar to sparc64's pmap_clear_write().
Previously these were libc functions but were requested to
be made into system calls for atomicity and to coalesce what
might be two entrances into the kernel (signal mask setting
and floating point trap) into one.
A few style nits and comments from bde are also included.
Tested on alpha by: gallatin
to reflect its new location, and add page queue and flag locking.
Notes: (1) alpha, i386, and ia64 had identical implementations
of pmap_collect() in terms of machine-independent interfaces;
(2) sparc64 doesn't require it; (3) powerpc had it as a TODO.
sysctls to MI code; this reduces code duplication and makes all of them
available on sparc64, and the latter two on powerpc.
The semantics by the i386 and pc98 hw.availpages is slightly changed:
previously, holes between ranges of available pages would be included,
while they are excluded now. The new behaviour should be more correct
and brings i386 in line with the other architectures.
Move physmem to vm/vm_init.c, where this variable is used in MI code.
argument is an expression you can end up casting part of it to void *.
This resulted in bogus warnings about pointer arith using void *'s for
the ep(4) driver.
not look like the prerequisites to fill it in properly will be in the tree
for the upcoming release, but it's mostly done, so there is no need for these
to stay around to remind us.
This provides a 30% reduction in system time and a 6% reduction in wallclock time
for a make buildworld on my xp1000 (one 21264).
FWIW, I've been running this for nearly 2 months without problems.

We've been talking about this for years, but nobody has done it.
(and I don't think anybody has used this for debugging since Doug
and I were doing the initial bootstrapping..)
handling clean and functional as 5.x evolves. This allows some of the
nasty bandaids in the 5.x codepaths to be unwound.
Encapsulate 4.x signal handling under COMPAT_FREEBSD4 (there is an
anti-foot-shooting measure in place, 5.x folks need this for a while) and
finish encapsulating the older stuff under COMPAT_43. Since the ancient
stuff is required on alpha (longjmp(3) passes a 'struct osigcontext *'
to the current sigreturn(2), instead of the 'ucontext_t *' that sigreturn
is supposed to take), add a compile time check to prevent foot shooting
there too. Add uniform COMPAT_43 stubs for ia64/sparc64/powerpc.
Tested on: i386, alpha, ia64. Compiled on sparc64 (a few days ago).

mutex-friendly vm_page_sleep_if_busy().
- Introduce page queue locking in pmap_page_lookup() and
pmap_release_free_page().
- Simplify the invalidation of the pmap's ptphint in
pmap_release_free_page(). (MFi386 pmap.c revision 1.362.)
The primary reason for this is to allow MD code to process machine
specific attributes, segments or sections in the ELF file and
update machine specific state accordingly. An immediate use of this
is in the ia64 port where unwind information is updated to allow
debugging and tracing in/across modules. Note that this commit
does not add the functionality to the ia64 port. See revision 1.9
of ia64/ia64/elf_machdep.c.

ACL configuration changes, this shouldn't result in different code paths
for file systems not explicitly configured for ACLs by the system
administrator. For UFS1, administrators must still recompile their
kernel to add support for extended attributes; for UFS2, it's sufficient
to enable ACLs using tunefs or at mount-time (tunefs preferred for
reliability reasons). UFS2, for a variety of reasons, including
performance and reliability, is the preferred file system for use with
ACLs.

There are currently three known issues which may force people to
need the NO_GEOM option:
boot0cfg/fdisk:
Tries to update the MBR while it is being used to control
slices. GEOM does not allow this as a direct operation.
SCSI floppy drives:
Appearantly the scsi-da driver return "EBUSY" if no media
is inserted. This is wrong, it should return ENXIO.
PC98:
It is unclear if GEOM correctly recognizes all variants of
PC98 disklabels. (Help Wanted! I have neither docs nor HW)

This adds MI and MD code to allow the allocation of an alternate kstack
who's size can be speficied when calling kthread_create. Passing the
value 0 prevents the alternate kstack from being created. Note that the
ia64 MD code is missing for now, and PowerPC was only partially written
due to the pmap.c being incomplete there.
Though this patch does not modify anything to make use of the alternate
kstack, acpi and usb are good candidates.

gets signals operating based on a TailQ, and is good enough to run X11,
GNOME, and do job control. There are some intricate parts which could be
more refined to match the sigset_t versions, but those require further
evaluation of directions in which our signal system can expand and contract
to fit our needs.
After this has been in the tree for a while, I will make in kernel API
changes, most notably to trapsignal(9) and sendsig(9), to use ksiginfo
more robustly, such that we can actually pass information with our
(queued) signals to the userland. That will also result in using a
struct ksiginfo pointer, rather than a signal number, in a lot of
kern_sig.c, to refer to an individual pending signal queue member, but
right now there is no defined behaviour for such.
CODAFS is unfinished in this regard because the logic is unclear in
some places.

respectively. Replace the handful of gcc-ism's that use
__attribute__((aligned(16))) etc around the kernel with __aligned(16).
There are over 400 __attribute__((packed)) to deal with, that can come
later. I just want to use __packed in new code rather than add more
gcc-ism's.

This is mainly so that they can be variable even for the native abi, based
on different machine types. Get stack protections from the sysentvec too.

Disklabel is really a MI format in many ways, at least it certainly
is when you operate on struct disklabel.

- Get test for valid trace request contents right.
- You don't use 'stq' to move a value from one register to another,
use 'mov' to read sp. Also, can't use nice names for registers
in in-line asm in gcc.
- pc is not a publically accessible register, instead, create a label
in the asm code and use 'lda' to load the address of that label into
the pc field of the trace request.
- Use correction function name for db_print_backtrace().
MD function is just a wrapper around db_stack_trace_cmd() that prints out
a backtrace of curthread. Currently, this function is only implemented
on i386 and alpha (and the alpha version isn't quite tested yet, will do
that in a bit). Other changes:
- For i386, fix a bug in the raw frame address case. The eip we extract
from the passed in frame address does not match the frame we received.
Thus, instead of printing a bogus frame with the wrong eip, go ahead
and advance frame down to the same frame as the eip we are using.
- For alpha, attempt to add a way of doing a raw trace for alpha. Instead
of passing a frame address in 'addr', pass in a pointer to a structure
containing PC and KSP and use those to start the backtrace. The alpha
db_print_backtrace() uses asm to read in the current PC and KSP values
into such a request.

from the kernel build. This broke linux_genassym on the alpha. For the
kernel, the correct place to get offsetof() is not in /usr/include/stddef.h
but rather <sys/types.h>
under way to move the remnants of the a.out toolchain to ports. As the
comment in src/Makefile said, this stuff is deprecated and one should not
expect this to remain beyond 4.0-REL. It has already lasted WAY beyond
that.
Notable exceptions:
gcc - I have not touched the a.out generation stuff there.
ldd/ldconfig - still have some code to interface with a.out rtld.
old as/ld/etc - I have not removed these yet, pending their move to ports.
some includes - necessary for ldd/ldconfig for now.

next step is to allow > 1 to be allocated per process. This would give
multi-processor threads. (when the rest of the infrastructure is

While doing this I noticed libkvm and sys/kern/kern_proc.c:fill_kinfo_proc
are diverging more than they should.. corrective action needed soon.

should and can be.
This part of sendsig could be slightly refactored to use an MI interface, or
ideally, *sendsig*() would have an API change to accept a siginfo_t, which
would be filled out by an MI function in the level above sendsig, and said MI
function would make a small call into MD code to fill out the MD parts (some
of which may be bogus, such as the si_addr stuff in some places). This would
eventually make it possible for parts of the kernel sending signals to set up
a siginfo with meaningful information.

sysentvec. Initialized all fields of all sysentvecs, which will allow
them to be used instead of constants in more places. Provided stack
fixup routines for emulations that previously used the default.

The buf size calculator still overflows an integer on machines with large
KVA (eg: ia64) where the number of pages does not fit into an int. Use
'long' there.
Change Maxmem and physmem and related variables to 'long', mostly for
completeness. Machines are not likely to overflow 'int' pages in the
near term, but then again, 640K ought to be enough for anybody. This
comes for free on 32 bit machines, so why not?
Change _BSD_CLK_TCK_ and _BSD_CLOCKS_PER_SEC_ to match stathz. This
should result in bug for bug compatibility in staticly linked
programs and dynamicly linked programs should see an immediate
correction.
These types are unlikely to ever become very MD. They include:
clockid_t, ct_rune_t, fflags_t, intrmask_t, mbstate_t, off_t, pid_t,
rune_t, socklen_t, timer_t, wchar_t, and wint_t.
While moving them, make a few adjustments (submitted by bde):
o __ct_rune_t needs to be precisely `int', not necessarily __int32_t,
since the arg type of the ctype functions is int.
o __rune_t, __wchar_t and __wint_t inherit this via a typedef of
__ct_rune_t.
o Some minor wording changes in the comment blocks for ct_rune_t and
mbstate_t.

fo_read() and fo_write(): explicitly use the cred argument to fo_poll()
as "active_cred" using the passed file descriptor's f_cred reference
to provide access to the file credential. Add an active_cred
argument to fo_stat() so that implementers have access to the active
credential as well as the file credential. Generally modify callers
of fo_stat() to pass in td->td_ucred rather than fp->f_cred, which
was redundantly provided via the fp argument. This set of modifications
also permits threads to perform these operations on behalf of another
thread without modifying their credential.
Trickle this change down into fo_stat/poll() implementations:
- badfo_poll(), badfo_stat(): modify/add arguments.
- kqueue_poll(), kqueue_stat(): modify arguments.
- pipe_poll(), pipe_stat(): modify/add arguments, pass active_cred to
MAC checks rather than td->td_ucred.
- soo_poll(), soo_stat(): modify/add arguments, pass fp->f_cred rather
than cred to pru_sopoll() to maintain current semantics.
- sopoll(): moidfy arguments.
- vn_poll(), vn_statfile(): modify/add arguments, pass new arguments
to vn_stat(). Pass active_cred to MAC and fp->f_cred to VOP_POLL()
to maintian current semantics.
- vn_close(): rename cred to file_cred to reflect reality while I'm here.
- vn_stat(): Add active_cred and file_cred arguments to vn_stat()
and consumers so that this distinction is maintained at the VFS
as well as 'struct file' layer. Pass active_cred instead of
td->td_ucred to MAC and to VOP_GETATTR() to maintain current semantics.
- fifofs: modify the creation of a "filetemp" so that the file
credential is properly initialized and can be used in the socket
code if desired. Pass ap->a_td->td_ucred as the active
credential to soo_poll(). If we teach the vnop interface about
the distinction between file and active credentials, we would use
the active credential here.
Note that current inconsistent passing of active_cred vs. file_cred to
VOP's is maintained. It's not clear why GETATTR would be authorized
using active_cred while POLL would be authorized using file_cred at
the file system level.

make a series of modifications to the credential arguments relating
to file read and write operations to cliarfy which credential is
used for what:
- Change fo_read() and fo_write() to accept "active_cred" instead of
"cred", and change the semantics of consumers of fo_read() and
fo_write() to pass the active credential of the thread requesting
an operation rather than the cached file cred. The cached file
cred is still available in fo_read() and fo_write() consumers
via fp->f_cred. These changes largely in sys_generic.c.
For each implementation of fo_read() and fo_write(), update cred
usage to reflect this change and maintain current semantics:
- badfo_readwrite() unchanged
- kqueue_read/write() unchanged
pipe_read/write() now authorize MAC using active_cred rather
than td->td_ucred
- soo_read/write() unchanged
- vn_read/write() now authorize MAC using active_cred but
VOP_READ/WRITE() with fp->f_cred
Modify vn_rdwr() to accept two credential arguments instead of a
single credential: active_cred and file_cred. Use active_cred
for MAC authorization, and select a credential for use in
VOP_READ/WRITE() based on whether file_cred is NULL or not. If
file_cred is provided, authorize the VOP using that cred,
otherwise the active credential, matching current semantics.
Modify current vn_rdwr() consumers to pass a file_cred if used
in the context of a struct file, and to always pass active_cred.
When vn_rdwr() is used without a file_cred, pass NOCRED.
These changes should maintain current semantics for read/write,
but avoid a redundant passing of fp->f_cred, as well as making
it more clear what the origin of each credential is in file
descriptor read/write operations.
Follow-up commits will make similar changes to other file descriptor
operations, and modify the MAC framework to pass both credentials
to MAC policy modules so they can implement either semantic for
revocation.

This is an architecture that present a thing message passing interface
to the OS. You can query as to how many ports and what kind are attached
and enable them and so on.
A less grand view is that this is just another way to package SCSI (SPI or
FC) and FC-IP into a one-driver interface set.

- v_vflag is protected by the vnode lock and is used when synchronization
with VOP calls is needed.
- v_iflag is protected by interlock and is used for dealing with vnode
management issues. These flags include X/O LOCK, FREE, DOOMED, etc.
- All accesses to v_iflag and v_vflag have either been locked or marked with
mp_fixme's.
- Many ASSERT_VOP_LOCKED calls have been added where the locking was not
clear.
- Many functions in vfs_subr.c were restructured to provide for stronger
locking.
Idea stolen from: BSD/OS
and move them into md_uac in struct mdproc. mdproc is protected by the
proc lock. md_flags now is only ever modified by the current thread, so
it doesn't need a lock.
- Rename the constants for all the per-thread MD flags to use MDTD_*
instead of MDP_*.
<stdint.h>. Previously, parts were defined in <machine/ansi.h> and
<machine/limits.h>. This resulted in two problems:
(1) Defining macros in <machine/ansi.h> gets in the way of that
header only defining types.
(2) Defining C99 limits in <machine/limits.h> adds pollution to
<limits.h>.
handler in the kernel at the same time. Also, allow for the
exec_new_vmspace() code to build a different sized vmspace depending on
the executable environment. This is a big help for execing i386 binaries
on ia64. The ELF exec code grows the ability to map partial pages when
there is a page size difference, eg: emulating 4K pages on 8K or 16K
hardware pages.
Flesh out the i386 emulation support for ia64. At this point, the only
binary that I know of that fails is cvsup, because the cvsup runtime
tries to execute code in pages not marked executable.

Alpha's pmap_growkernel() calls vm_page_alloc() from within a critical

o Assert that the page queues mutex is held in vm_page_wire()

to kernel loadable modules.
choosethread() in MI C code instead of doing it in in assembly in all the
various cpu_switch() functions. This fixes problems on ia64 and sparc64.

really compiler dependent either, but this helps in reducing
<machine/ansi.h> to only type definitions.
threaded VM pagezero kthread outside of Giant. For some platforms, this
is really easy since it can just use the direct mapped region. For others,
IPI sending is involved or there are other issues, so grab Giant when
needed.
We still have preemption issues to deal with, but Alan Cox has an
interesting suggestion on how to minimize the problem on x86.
Use Luigi's hack for preserving the (lack of) priority.
Turn the idle zeroing back on since it can now actually do something useful
outside of Giant in many cases.
pmap_swapin_proc/pmap_swapout_proc functions from the MD pmap code
and use a single equivalent MI version. There are other cleanups
needed still.
While here, use the UMA zone hooks to keep a cache of preinitialized
proc structures handy, just like the thread system does. This eliminates
one dependency on 'struct proc' being persistent even after being freed.
There are some comments about things that can be factored out into
ctor/dtor functions if it is worth it. For now they are mostly just
doing statistics to get a feel of how it is working.

on sparc64 to deactivate the vmspace of the exiting process on all cpus.
Otherwise if another unrelated process gets the exact same vmspace structure
allocated to it (same address), its address space will not be activated
properly. This seems to fix some spontaneous signal 11 problems with smp
on sparc64.
implementations can provide a base zero ffs function if they wish.

uifind() with a proc lock held.
change_ruid() and change_euid() have been modified to take a uidinfo
structure which will be pre-allocated by callers, they will then
call uihold() on the uidinfo structure so that the caller's logic
is simplified.
This allows one to call uifind() before locking the proc struct and
thereby avoid a potential blocking allocation with the proc lock
held.
This may need revisiting, perhaps keeping a spare uidinfo allocated
per process to handle this situation or re-examining if the proc
lock needs to be held over the entire operation of changing real
or effective user id.

- ktrace no longer requires Giant so do ktrace syscall events before and
after acquiring and releasing Giant, respectively.
- For i386, ia32 syscalls on ia64, powerpc, and sparc64, get rid of the
goto bad hack and instead use the model on ia64 and alpha were we
skip the actual syscall invocation if error != 0. This fixes a bug
where if we the copyin() of the arguments failed for a syscall that
was not marked MP safe, we would try to release Giant when we had
not acquired it.
regardless of if they are signed or unsigned since it is easier to work
with sign-extended values. Thus, remove the disabled zapnot to
zero-extend the sign-extended value we read from *p in atomic_cmpset_32()
since the cmpval we are comparing against should already be
sign-extended.
- To ensure that the compiler knows to sign-extend the upper 32 bits of
cmpval rather than leaving garbage in there, cast the appropriately in
the constraints section.

Savecore likes the results, but I have no way to test it as gdb is
still broken.
value we load from memory. gcc3.1 passes in the u_int32_t old value to
compare against as a _sign_-extended 64-bit value for some reason (bug?).
This is a temporary workaround so kernels work again on alpha.
i386/ia64/alpha - catch up to sparc64/ppc:
- replace pmap_kernel() with refs to kernel_pmap
- change kernel_pmap pointer to (&kernel_pmap_store)
(this is a speedup since ld can set these at compile/link time)

- gc unused pmap_destroy
- gc unused struct pmap.pm_count
