This reverts commit 661db63099, reversing
changes made to a8cb2b57f9.
It is to basically come back to:
commit a8cb2b57f9
the previous version of gedit based on the Tepl library.
The goal is to continue the gedit development (on master), but based on
the Tepl library.
New news format, to follow the same format as GtkSourceView, gspell,
Tepl, and other projects. Adding the date is convenient, instead of
looking in the git log.
I have the intention to add:
- build-with-jhbuild.md
"install-with-jhbuild.md" sounds a slightly less good name. Jhbuild is
usually used for contributors, and we talk more about "the build",
instead of "the installation".
It's a first step to put all the build/install instructions in a single
place (there are also explanations in
docs/gedit-development-getting-started.md that will be moved in a
following commit).
I intend to add a section "Contributions other than software
development" with links to wiki pages.
The term "hacking" is for software development only, so it's less
appropriate.
A next commit will rename the file to CONTRIBUTING.md (with the
extension), and use the Markdown syntax.
Throughout the file: better use the Markdown syntax (GitLab renders it).
In order in the diff:
Intro:
- Take the same description as in the AppData file. There is anyway more
information on the website. To not have many different gedit
descriptions a bit everywhere (more difficult to update at all the
places).
- For the programming languages used, it's explained in
docs/gedit-development-getting-started.md.
Resources:
- all the links are available on the website.
Installation:
- Have a separate Dependencies section, and refer to the meson.build
file, it will simplify the maintenance, to have the list of deps in only
one place, no need to update the version numbers in both places (in the
past the readme file was frequently outdated, so it was worse).
- Simpler install procedure with Meson, with the 3 commands taken from:
https://mesonbuild.com/Quick-guide.html
- Don't explain how to extract the tarball, if someone wants to compile
gedit from source, the person hopefully knows that it's needed to
extract the tarball first (also to be able to read the readme file).
Contributions:
- Don't duplicate infos from the hacking file.
