Denton Liu 203c85339f Use OPT_CALLBACK and OPT_CALLBACK_F
In the codebase, there are many options which use OPTION_CALLBACK in a
plain ol' struct definition. However, we have the OPT_CALLBACK and
OPT_CALLBACK_F macros which are meant to abstract these plain struct
definitions away. These macros are useful as they semantically signal to
developers that these are just normal callback option with nothing fancy
happening.

Replace plain struct definitions of OPTION_CALLBACK with OPT_CALLBACK or
OPT_CALLBACK_F where applicable. The heavy lifting was done using the
following (disgusting) shell script:

The result was manually inspected and then reformatted to match the
style of the surrounding code. Finally, using
`git grep OPTION_CALLBACK \*.c`, leftover results which were not handled
by the script were manually transformed.

Elijah Newren 95c11ecc73 Fix error-prone fill_directory() API; make it only return matches
Traditionally, the expected calling convention for the dir.c API was:

    fill_directory(&dir, ..., pathspec)
    foreach entry in dir->entries:
        if (dir_path_match(entry, pathspec))
            process_or_display(entry)

This may have made sense once upon a time, because the fill_directory() call
could use cheap checks to avoid doing full pathspec matching, and an external
caller may have wanted to do other post-processing of the results anyway.
However:

    * this structure makes it easy for users of the API to get it wrong

    * this structure actually makes it harder to understand
      fill_directory() and the functions it uses internally.  It has
      tripped me up several times while trying to fix bugs and
      restructure things.

    * relying on post-filtering was already found to produce wrong
      results; pathspec matching had to be added internally for multiple
      cases in order to get the right results (see commits 404ebceda0
      (dir: also check directories for matching pathspecs, 2019-09-17)
      and 89a1f4aaf7 (dir: if our pathspec might match files under a
      dir, recurse into it, 2019-09-17))

    * it's bad for performance: fill_directory() already has to do lots
      of checks and knows the subset of cases where it still needs to do
      more checks.  Forcing external callers to do full pathspec
      matching means they must re-check _every_ path.

So, add the pathspec matching within the fill_directory() internals, and
remove it from external callers.

Derrick Stolee 65edd96aec treewide: rename 'exclude' methods to 'pattern'
The first consumer of pattern-matching filenames was the
.gitignore feature. In that context, storing a list of patterns
as a 'struct exclude_list'  makes sense. However, the
sparse-checkout feature then adopted these structures and methods,
but with the opposite meaning: these patterns match the files
that should be included!

It would be clearer to rename this entire library as a "pattern
matching" library, and the callers apply exclusion/inclusion
logic accordingly based on their needs.

This commit renames several methods defined in dir.h to make
more sense with the renamed 'struct exclude_list' to 'struct
pattern_list' and 'struct exclude' to 'struct path_pattern':

 * last_exclude_matching() -> last_matching_pattern()
 * parse_exclude() -> parse_path_pattern()

In addition, the word 'exclude' was replaced with 'pattern'
in the methods below:

 * add_exclude_list()
 * add_excludes_from_file_to_list()
 * add_excludes_from_file()
 * add_excludes_from_blob_to_list()
 * add_exclude()
 * clear_exclude_list()

A few methods with the word "exclude" remain. These will
be handled seperately. In particular, the method
"is_excluded()" is concretely about the .gitignore file
relative to a specific directory. This is the important
boundary between library and consumer: is_excluded() cares
about .gitignore, but is_excluded() calls
last_matching_pattern() to make that decision.

René Scharfe 568a05c5ec cleanup: fix possible overflow errors in binary search, part 2
Calculating the sum of two array indexes to find the midpoint between
them can overflow, i.e. code like this is unsafe for big arrays:

	mid = (first + last) >> 1;

Make sure the intermediate value stays within the boundaries instead,
like this:

	mid = first + ((last - first) >> 1);

The loop condition of the binary search makes sure that 'last' is
always greater than 'first', so this is safe as long as 'first' is
not negative.  And that can be verified easily using the pre-context
of each change, except for name-hash.c, so add an assertion to that
effect there.

The unsafe calculations were found with:

	git grep '(.*+.*) *>> *1'

This is a continuation of 19716b21a4 (cleanup: fix possible overflow
errors in binary search, 2017-10-08).

Thomas Gummerer 7cb7283adb ls-files: use correct format string
struct stat_data and struct cache_time both use unsigned ints for all
their members.  However the format string for 'git ls-files --debug'
currently uses %d for formatting these numbers.  This means that we
potentially print these values incorrectly if they are greater than
INT_MAX.

This has been the case since the --debug option was introduced in 'git
ls-files' in 8497421715 ("ls-files: learn a debugging dump format",
2010-07-31).

Stefan Beller d5498e0871 repository: repo_submodule_init to take a submodule struct
When constructing a struct repository for a submodule for some revision
of the superproject where the submodule is not contained in the index,
it may not be present in the working tree currently either. In that
situation giving a 'path' argument is not useful. Upgrade the
repo_submodule_init function to take a struct submodule instead.
The submodule struct can be obtained via submodule_from_{path, name} or
an artificial submodule struct can be passed in.

While we are at it, rename the repository struct in the repo_submodule_init
function, which is to be initialized, to a name that is not confused with
the struct submodule as easily. Perform such renames in similar functions
as well.

Also move its documentation into the header file.

Jeff King 517fe807d6 assert NOARG/NONEG behavior of parse-options callbacks
When we define a parse-options callback, the flags we put in the option
struct must match what the callback expects. For example, a callback
which does not handle the "unset" parameter should only be used with
PARSE_OPT_NONEG. But since the callback and the option struct are not
defined next to each other, it's easy to get this wrong (as earlier
patches in this series show).

Fortunately, the compiler can help us here: compiling with
-Wunused-parameters can show us which callbacks ignore their "unset"
parameters (and likewise, ones that ignore "arg" expect to be triggered
with PARSE_OPT_NOARG).

But after we've inspected a callback and determined that all of its
callers use the right flags, what do we do next? We'd like to silence
the compiler warning, but do so in a way that will catch any wrong calls
in the future.

We can do that by actually checking those variables and asserting that
they match our expectations. Because this is such a common pattern,
we'll introduce some helper macros. The resulting messages aren't
as descriptive as we could make them, but the file/line information from
BUG() is enough to identify the problem (and anyway, the point is that
these should never be seen).

Each of the annotated callbacks in this patch triggers
-Wunused-parameters, and was manually inspected to make sure all callers
use the correct options (so none of these BUGs should be triggerable).

Jeff King ccf659e87c ls-files: mark exclude options as NONEG
Running "git ls-files --no-exclude" will currently segfault, as its
option callback does not handle the "unset" parameter.

In theory this could be used to clear the exclude list, but it is not
clear how that would interact with the other exclude options, nor is the
current code capable of clearing the list. Let's just disable the broken
option.

Note that --no-exclude-from will similarly segfault, but
--no-exclude-standard will not. It just silently does the wrong thing
(pretending as if --exclude-standard was specified).

Johannes Schindelin 033abf97fc Replace all die("BUG: ...") calls by BUG() ones
In d8193743e0 (usage.c: add BUG() function, 2017-05-12), a new macro
was introduced to use for reporting bugs instead of die(). It was then
subsequently used to convert one single caller in 588a538ae5
(setup_git_env: convert die("BUG") to BUG(), 2017-05-12).

The cover letter of the patch series containing this patch
(cf 20170513032414.mfrwabt4hovujde2@sigill.intra.peff.net) is not
terribly clear why only one call site was converted, or what the plan
is for other, similar calls to die() to report bugs.

Let's just convert all remaining ones in one fell swoop.

This trick was performed by this invocation:

Jeff King 0e5bba53af add UNLEAK annotation for reducing leak false positives
It's a common pattern in git commands to allocate some
memory that should last for the lifetime of the program and
then not bother to free it, relying on the OS to throw it
away.

This keeps the code simple, and it's fast (we don't waste
time traversing structures or calling free at the end of the
program). But it also triggers warnings from memory-leak
checkers like valgrind or LSAN. They know that the memory
was still allocated at program exit, but they don't know
_when_ the leaked memory stopped being useful. If it was
early in the program, then it's probably a real and
important leak. But if it was used right up until program
exit, it's not an interesting leak and we'd like to suppress
it so that we can see the real leaks.

This patch introduces an UNLEAK() macro that lets us do so.
To understand its design, let's first look at some of the
alternatives.

Unfortunately the suppression systems offered by
leak-checking tools don't quite do what we want. A
leak-checker basically knows two things:

  1. Which blocks were allocated via malloc, and the
     callstack during the allocation.

  2. Which blocks were left un-freed at the end of the
     program (and which are unreachable, but more on that
     later).

Their suppressions work by mentioning the function or
callstack of a particular allocation, and marking it as OK
to leak.  So imagine you have code like this:

You can say "ignore allocations from some_function(),
they're not leaks". But that's not right. That function may
be called elsewhere, too, and we would potentially want to
know about those leaks.

So you can say "ignore the callstack when main calls
some_function".  That works, but your annotations are
brittle. In this case it's only two functions, but you can
imagine that the actual allocation is much deeper. If any of
the intermediate code changes, you have to update the
suppression.

What we _really_ want to say is that "the value assigned to
p at the end of the function is not a real leak". But
leak-checkers can't understand that; they don't know about
"p" in the first place.

However, we can do something a little bit tricky if we make
some assumptions about how leak-checkers work. They
generally don't just report all un-freed blocks. That would
report even globals which are still accessible when the
leak-check is run.  Instead they take some set of memory
(like BSS) as a root and mark it as "reachable". Then they
scan the reachable blocks for anything that looks like a
pointer to a malloc'd block, and consider that block
reachable. And then they scan those blocks, and so on,
transitively marking anything reachable from a global as
"not leaked" (or at least leaked in a different category).

So we can mark the value of "p" as reachable by putting it
into a variable with program lifetime. One way to do that is
to just mark "p" as static. But that actually affects the
run-time behavior if the function is called twice (you
aren't likely to call main() twice, but some of our cmd_*()
functions are called from other commands).

Instead, we can trick the leak-checker by putting the value
into _any_ reachable bytes. This patch keeps a global
linked-list of bytes copied from "unleaked" variables. That
list is reachable even at program exit, which confers
recursive reachability on whatever values we unleak.

In other words, you can do:

to annotate "p" and suppress the leak report.

But wait, couldn't we just say "free(p)"? In this toy
example, yes. But UNLEAK()'s byte-copying strategy has
several advantages over actually freeing the memory:

  1. It's recursive across structures. In many cases our "p"
     is not just a pointer, but a complex struct whose
     fields may have been allocated by a sub-function. And
     in some cases (e.g., dir_struct) we don't even have a
     function which knows how to free all of the struct
     members.

     By marking the struct itself as reachable, that confers
     reachability on any pointers it contains (including those
     found in embedded structs, or reachable by walking
     heap blocks recursively.

  2. It works on cases where we're not sure if the value is
     allocated or not. For example:

       char *p = argc > 1 ? argv[1] : some_function();

     It's safe to use UNLEAK(p) here, because it's not
     freeing any memory. In the case that we're pointing to
     argv here, the reachability checker will just ignore
     our bytes.

  3. Likewise, it works even if the variable has _already_
     been freed. We're just copying the pointer bytes. If
     the block has been freed, the leak-checker will skip
     over those bytes as uninteresting.

  4. Because it's not actually freeing memory, you can
     UNLEAK() before we are finished accessing the variable.
     This is helpful in cases like this:

       char *p = some_function();
       return another_function(p);

     Writing this with free() requires:

       int ret;
       char *p = some_function();
       ret = another_function(p);
       free(p);
       return ret;

     But with unleak we can just write:

       char *p = some_function();
       UNLEAK(p);
       return another_function(p);

This patch adds the UNLEAK() macro and enables it
automatically when Git is compiled with SANITIZE=leak.  In
normal builds it's a noop, so we pay no runtime cost.

It also adds some UNLEAK() annotations to show off how the
feature works. On top of other recent leak fixes, these are
enough to get t0000 and t0001 to pass when compiled with
LSAN.

Note the case in commit.c which actually converts a
strbuf_release() into an UNLEAK. This code was already
non-leaky, but the free didn't do anything useful, since
we're exiting. Converting it to an annotation means that
non-leak-checking builds pay no runtime cost. The cost is
minimal enough that it's probably not worth going on a
crusade to convert these kinds of frees to UNLEAKS. I did it
here for consistency with the "sb" leak (though it would
have been equally correct to go the other way, and turn them
both into strbuf_release() calls).

Brandon Williams ff6f1f564c submodule-config: lazy-load a repository's .gitmodules file
In order to use the submodule-config subsystem, callers first need to
initialize it by calling 'repo_read_gitmodules()' or
'gitmodules_config()' (which just redirects to
'repo_read_gitmodules()').  There are a couple of callers who need to
load an explicit revision of the repository's .gitmodules file (grep) or
need to modify the .gitmodules file so they would need to load it before
modify the file (checkout), but the majority of callers are simply
reading the .gitmodules file present in the working tree.  For the
common case it would be nice to avoid the boilerplate of initializing
the submodule-config system before using it, so instead let's perform
lazy-loading of the submodule-config system.

Remove the calls to reading the gitmodules file from ls-files to show
that lazy-loading the .gitmodules file works.

René Scharfe f331ab9d4c use MOVE_ARRAY
Simplify the code for moving members inside of an array and make it more
robust by using the helper macro MOVE_ARRAY.  It calculates the size
based on the specified number of elements for us and supports NULL
pointers when that number is zero.  Raw memmove(3) calls with NULL can
cause the compiler to (over-eagerly) optimize out later NULL checks.

This patch was generated with contrib/coccinelle/array.cocci and spatch
(Coccinelle).

Brandon Williams cbca060e10 ls-files: prevent prune_cache from overeagerly pruning submodules
Since (ae8d08242 pathspec: pass directory indicator to
match_pathspec_item()) the path matching logic has been able to cope
with submodules without needing to strip off a trailing slash if a path
refers to a submodule.

ls-files is the only caller of 'parse_pathspec()' which relies on the
behavior of the PATHSPEC_STRIP_SUBMODULE_SLASH_CHEAP flag because it
uses the result to construct a common prefix of all provided pathspecs
which is then used to prune the index of all entries which don't have
that prefix.  Since submodules entries in the index don't have a
trailing slash 'prune_cache()' will be overeager and prune a submodule
'sub' if the common prefix is 'sub/'.  To correct this behavior, only
prune entries which don't match up to, but not including, a trailing
slash of the common prefix.

This is in preparation to remove the
PATHSPEC_STRIP_SUBMODULE_SLASH_CHEAP flag in a later patch.

Jacob Keller 2cfe66a8ee ls-files: fix path used when recursing into submodules
Don't assume that the current working directory is the root of the
repository. Correctly generate the path for the recursing child
processes by building it from the work_tree() root instead. Otherwise if
we run ls-files using --git-dir or --work-tree it will not work
correctly as it attempts to change directory into a potentially invalid
location. Best case, it doesn't exist and we produce an error. Worst
case we cd into the wrong location and unknown behavior occurs.

Add a new test which highlights this possibility.

Jacob Keller 2e5d6503bd ls-files: fix recurse-submodules with nested submodules
Since commit e77aa336f1 ("ls-files: optionally recurse into
submodules", 2016-10-07) ls-files has known how to recurse into
submodules when displaying files.

Unfortunately this fails for certain cases, including when nesting more
than one submodule, called from within a submodule that itself has
submodules, or when the GIT_DIR environemnt variable is set.

Prior to commit b58a68c1c1 ("setup: allow for prefix to be passed to
git commands", 2017-03-17) this resulted in an error indicating that
--prefix and --super-prefix were incompatible.

After this commit, instead, the process loops forever with a GIT_DIR set
to the parent and continuously reads the parent submodule files and
recursing forever.

Fix this by preparing the environment properly for submodules when
setting up the child process. This is similar to how other commands such
as grep behave.

This was not caught by the original tests because the scenario is
avoided if the submodules are created separately and not stored as the
standard method of putting the submodule git directory under
.git/modules/<name>. We can update the test to show the failure by the
addition of "git submodule absorbgitdirs" to the test case. However,
note that this new test would run forever without the necessary fix in
this patch.

Brandon Williams b2dfeb7c00 ls-files: fix bug when recursing with relative pathspec
When using the --recurse-submodules flag with a relative pathspec which
includes "..", an error is produced inside the child process spawned for a
submodule.  When creating the pathspec struct in the child, the ".." is
interpreted to mean "go up a directory" which causes an error stating that the
path ".." is outside of the repository.

While it is true that ".." is outside the scope of the submodule, it is
confusing to a user who originally invoked the command where ".." was indeed
still inside the scope of the superproject.  Since the child process launched
for the submodule has some context that it is operating underneath a
superproject, this error could be avoided.

This patch fixes the bug by passing the 'prefix' to the child process.  Now
each child process that works on a submodule has two points of reference to the
superproject: (1) the 'super_prefix' which is the path from the root of the
superproject down to root of the submodule and (2) the 'prefix' which is the
path from the root of the superproject down to the directory where the user
invoked the git command.

With these two pieces of information a child process can correctly interpret
the pathspecs provided by the user as well as being able to properly format its
output relative to the directory the user invoked the original command from.

René Scharfe 96f6d3f61a ls-files: move only kept cache entries in prune_cache()
prune_cache() first identifies those entries at the start of the sorted
array that can be discarded.  Then it moves the rest of the entries up.
Last it identifies the unwanted trailing entries among the moved ones
and cuts them off.

Change the order: Identify both start *and* end of the range to keep
first and then move only those entries to the top.  The resulting code
is slightly shorter and a bit more efficient.

Brandon Williams 75a6315f74 ls-files: add pathspec matching for submodules
Pathspecs can be a bit tricky when trying to apply them to submodules.
The main challenge is that the pathspecs will be with respect to the
superproject and not with respect to paths in the submodule.  The
approach this patch takes is to pass in the identical pathspec from the
superproject to the submodule in addition to the submodule-prefix, which
is the path from the root of the superproject to the submodule, and then
we can compare an entry in the submodule prepended with the
submodule-prefix to the pathspec in order to determine if there is a
match.

This patch also permits the pathspec logic to perform a prefix match against
submodules since a pathspec could refer to a file inside of a submodule.
Due to limitations in the wildmatch logic, a prefix match is only done
literally.  If any wildcard character is encountered we'll simply punt
and produce a false positive match.  More accurate matching will be done
once inside the submodule.  This is due to the superproject not knowing
what files could exist in the submodule.

As a short option, we cannot handle negation. Thus a callback
handling "unset" is overkill, and we can just use OPT_SET_INT

When working in a cross-platform environment, a user may want to
check if text files are stored normalized in the repository and
if .gitattributes are set appropriately.

Make it possible to let Git show the line endings in the index and
in the working tree and the effective text/eol attributes.

The end of line ("eolinfo") are shown like this:

    "-text"        binary (or with bare CR) file
    "none"         text file without any EOL
    "lf"           text file with LF
    "crlf"         text file with CRLF
    "mixed"        text file with mixed line endings.

The effective text/eol attribute is one of these:

    "", "-text", "text", "text=auto", "text eol=lf", "text eol=crlf"

git ls-files --eol gives an output like this:

Junio C Hamano 777c55a616 report_path_error(): move to dir.c
The expected call sequence is for the caller to use match_pathspec()
repeatedly on a set of pathspecs, accumulating the "hits" in a
separate array, and then call this function to diagnose a pathspec
that never matched anything, as that can indicate a typo from the
command line, e.g. "git commit Maekfile".

Many builtin commands use this function from builtin/ls-files.c,
which is not a very healthy arrangement.  ls-files might have been
the first command to feel the need for such a helper, but the need
is shared by everybody who uses the "match and then report" pattern.

Move it to dir.c where match_pathspec() is defined.

Alex Henrie 9c9b4f2f8b standardize usage info string format
This patch puts the usage info strings that were not already in docopt-
like format into docopt-like format, which will be a litle easier for
end users and a lot easier for translators. Changes include:

- Placing angle brackets around fill-in-the-blank parameters
- Putting dashes in multiword parameter names
- Adding spaces to [-f|--foobar] to make [-f | --foobar]
- Replacing <foobar>* with [<foobar>...]

Nguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy ae8d082421 pathspec: pass directory indicator to match_pathspec_item()
This patch activates the DO_MATCH_DIRECTORY code in m_p_i(), which
makes "git diff HEAD submodule/" and "git diff HEAD submodule" produce
the same output. Previously only the version without trailing slash
returns the difference (if any).

That's the effect of new ce_path_match(). dir_path_match() is not
executed by the new tests. And it should not introduce regressions.

Previously if path "dir/" is passed in with pathspec "dir/", they
obviously match. With new dir_path_match(), the path becomes
_directory_ "dir" vs pathspec "dir/", which is not executed by the old
code path in m_p_i(). The new code path is executed and produces the
same result.

The other case is pathspec "dir" and path "dir/" is now turned to
"dir" (with DO_MATCH_DIRECTORY). Still the same result before or after
the patch.

So why change? Because of the next patch about clean.c.

Junio C Hamano 2eac2a4cc4 ls-files -k: a directory only can be killed if the index has a non-directory
"ls-files -o" and "ls-files -k" both traverse the working tree down
to find either all untracked paths or those that will be "killed"
(removed from the working tree to make room) when the paths recorded
in the index are checked out.  It is necessary to traverse the
working tree fully when enumerating all the "other" paths, but when
we are only interested in "killed" paths, we can take advantage of
the fact that paths that do not overlap with entries in the index
can never be killed.

The treat_one_path() helper function, which is called during the
recursive traversal, is the ideal place to implement an
optimization.

When we are looking at a directory P in the working tree, there are
three cases:

 (1) P exists in the index.  Everything inside the directory P in
     the working tree needs to go when P is checked out from the
     index.

 (2) P does not exist in the index, but there is P/Q in the index.
     We know P will stay a directory when we check out the contents
     of the index, but we do not know yet if there is a directory
     P/Q in the working tree to be killed, so we need to recurse.

 (3) P does not exist in the index, and there is no P/Q in the index
     to require P to be a directory, either.  Only in this case, we
     know that everything inside P will not be killed without
     recursing.

Note that this helper is called by treat_leading_path() that decides
if we need to traverse only subdirectories of a single common
leading directory, which is essential for this optimization to be
correct.  This caller checks each level of the leading path
component from shallower directory to deeper ones, and that is what
allows us to only check if the path appears in the index.  If the
call to treat_one_path() weren't there, given a path P/Q/R, the real
traversal may start from directory P/Q/R, even when the index
records P as a regular file, and we would end up having to check if
any leading subpath in P/Q/R, e.g. P, appears in the index.

Stefan Beller d5d09d4754 Replace deprecated OPT_BOOLEAN by OPT_BOOL
This task emerged from b04ba2bb (parse-options: deprecate OPT_BOOLEAN,
2011-09-27). All occurrences of the respective variables have
been reviewed and none of them relied on the counting up mechanism,
but all of them were using the variable as a true boolean.

This patch does not change semantics of any command intentionally.

Nguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy 9c5e6c802c Convert "struct cache_entry *" to "const ..." wherever possible
I attempted to make index_state->cache[] a "const struct cache_entry **"
to find out how existing entries in index are modified and where. The
question I have is what do we do if we really need to keep track of on-disk
changes in the index. The result is

 - diff-lib.c: setting CE_UPTODATE

 - name-hash.c: setting CE_HASHED

 - preload-index.c, read-cache.c, unpack-trees.c and
   builtin/update-index: obvious

 - entry.c: write_entry() may refresh the checked out entry via
   fill_stat_cache_info(). This causes "non-const struct cache_entry
   *" in builtin/apply.c, builtin/checkout-index.c and
   builtin/checkout.c

 - builtin/ls-files.c: --with-tree changes stagemask and may set
   CE_UPDATE

Of these, write_entry() and its call sites are probably most
interesting because it modifies on-disk info. But this is stat info
and can be retrieved via refresh, at least for porcelain
commands. Other just uses ce_flags for local purposes.

So, keeping track of "dirty" entries is just a matter of setting a
flag in index modification functions exposed by read-cache.c. Except
unpack-trees, the rest of the code base does not do anything funny
behind read-cache's back.

The actual patch is less valueable than the summary above. But if
anyone wants to re-identify the above sites. Applying this patch, then
this:

Jiang Xin e9a820cefd write_name{_quoted_relative,}(): remove redundant parameters
After substitute path_relative() in quote.c with relative_path()
from path.c, parameters (such as len and prefix_len) are redundant
in function write_name() and write_name_quoted_relative().  The
callers have already been audited that the strings they pass are
properly NUL terminated and the length they give are the length of
the string (or -1 that asks the length to be counted by the callee).

Remove these now-redundant parameters.

Jiang Xin 39598f9983 quote_path_relative(): remove redundant parameter
quote_path_relative() used to take a counted string as its parameter
(the string to be quoted).  With an earlier change, it now uses
relative_path() that does not take a counted string, and we have
been passing only the pointer to the string since then.

Remove the length parameter from quote_path_relative() to show that
this parameter was redundant.  All the changed lines show that the
caller passed either -1 (to ask the function run strlen() on the
string), or the length of the string, so the earlier conversion was
safe.

All the callers of quote_path_relative() that used to take counted string
have been audited to make sure that they are passing length of the actual
string (or -1 to ask the callee run strlen())

functions are different. Function relative_path returns "./", while
function path_relative returns empty string.

 * In function quote_path_relative, if the output of path_relative is
   empty, append "./" to it, like:

 * Another caller is write_name_quoted_relative, which is only used
   by builtin/ls-files.c. git-ls-files only show files, so path of
   files will never be identical with the prefix of a directory.

The following differences show that path_relative does not handle
extra slashes properly:

And if prefix has no trailing slash, path_relative does not work

One tricky part in this conversion is write_name() function in
ls-files.c.  It takes a counted string, <name, len>, that is to be
made relative to <prefix, prefix_len> and then quoted.  Because
write_name_quoted_relative() still takes these two parameters as
counted string, but ignores the count and treat these two as
NUL-terminated strings, this conversion needs to be audited for its
callers:

 - For <name, len>, all three callers of write_name() passes a
   NUL-terminated string and its true length, so this patch makes
   "len" unused.

 - For <prefix, prefix_len>, prefix could be a string that is longer
   than empty while prefix_len could be 0 when "--full-name" option
   is used.  This is fixed by checking prefix_len in write_name()
   and calling write_name_quoted_relative() with NULL when
   prefix_len is set to 0.  Again, this makes "prefix_len" given to
   write_name_quoted_relative() unused, without introducing a bug.

René Scharfe 0b437a18bd use logical OR (||) instead of binary OR (|) in logical context
The compiler can short-circuit the evaluation of conditions strung
together with logical OR operators instead of computing the resulting
bitmask with binary ORs.  More importantly, this patch makes the
intent of the changed code clearer, because the logical context (as
opposed to binary context) becomes immediately obvious.

While we're at it, simplify the check for patch->is_rename in
builtin/apply.c a bit; it can only be 0 or 1, so we don't need a
comparison operator.
