5a7d41d849 docs & comments: replace mentions of "git-add--interactive.perl"
Now that we've removed "git-add--interactive.perl" let's replace
mentions of it with "add-interactive.c". In the case of the "git add"
documentation we were using it as an example filename, so the mention
wasn't wrong, but using a dead file is slightly confusing.

The "borrowed" comment here likewise isn't wrong, but let's mention
the successor file instead. In the case of pathspec.c the implied TODO
item should refer to the current code (and the comment may not even be
current, I didn't check).

47cfc9bd7d attr: add flag --source to work with tree-ish
The contents of the .gitattributes files may evolve over time, but "git
check-attr" always checks attributes against them in the working tree
and/or in the index. It may be beneficial to optionally allow the users
to check attributes taken from a commit other than HEAD against paths.

Add a new flag `--source` which will allow users to check the
attributes against a commit (actually any tree-ish would do). When the
user uses this flag, we go through the stack of .gitattributes files but
instead of checking the current working tree and/or in the index, we
check the blobs from the provided tree-ish object. This allows the
command to also be used in bare repositories.

Since we use a tree-ish object, the user can pass "--source
HEAD:subdirectory" and all the attributes will be looked up as if
subdirectory was the root directory of the repository.

We cannot simply use the `<rev>:<path>` syntax without the `--source`
flag, similar to how it is used in `git show` because any non-flag
parameter before `--` is treated as an attribute and any parameter after
`--` is treated as a pathname.

The change involves creating a new function `read_attr_from_blob`, which
given the path reads the blob for the path against the provided source and
parses the attributes line by line. This function is plugged into
`read_attr()` function wherein we go through the stack of attributes
files.

b29ad38322 pathspec.h: move pathspec_needs_expanded_index() from reset.c to here
Method pathspec_needs_expanded_index() in reset.c from 4d1cfc1351
(reset: make --mixed sparse-aware, 2021-11-29) is reusable when we
need to verify if the index needs to be expanded when the command
is utilizing a pathspec rather than a literal path.

Move it to pathspec.h for reusability.

Add a few items to the function so it can better serve its purpose as
a standalone public function:

* Add a check in front so if the index is not sparse, return early since
  no expansion is needed.

* It now takes an arbitrary 'struct index_state' pointer instead of
  using `the_index` and `active_cache`.

* Add documentation to the function.

f00809500f Merge branch 'jc/all-negative-pathspec'

b02fdbc80a pathspec: correct an empty string used as a pathspec element
Pathspecs with only negative elements did not work with some
commands that pass the pathspec along to a subprocess. For
instance,

    $ git add -p -- ':!*.txt'

should add everything except for paths ending in ".txt", but it gets
complaint from underlying "diff-index" and aborts.

We used to error out when a pathspec with only negative elements in
it, like the one in the above example. Later, 859b7f1d (pathspec:
don't error out on all-exclusionary pathspec patterns, 2017-02-07)
updated the logic to add an empty string as an extra element. The
intention was to let the extra element to match everything and let
the negative ones given by the user to subtract from it.

At around the same time, we were migrating from "an empty string is
a valid pathspec element that matches everything" to "either a dot
or ":/" is used to match all, and an empty string is rejected",
between d426430e (pathspec: warn on empty strings as pathspec,
2016-06-22) and 9e4e8a64 (pathspec: die on empty strings as
pathspec, 2017-06-06). I think 9e4e8a64, which happened long after
859b7f1d happened, was not careful enough to turn the empty string
859b7f1d added to either a dot or ":/".

A care should be taken as the definition of "everything" depends on
subcommand. For the purpose of "add -p", adding a "." to add
everything in the current directory is the right thing to do. But
for some other commands, ":/" (i.e. really really everything, even
things outside the current subdirectory) is the right choice.

We would break commands in a big way if we get this wrong, so add a
handful of test pieces to make sure the resulting code still
excludes the paths that are expected and includes "everything" else.

49fdd51a23 add: skip tracked paths outside sparse-checkout cone
When 'git add' adds a tracked file that is outside of the
sparse-checkout cone, it checks the SKIP_WORKTREE bit to see if the file
exists outside of the sparse-checkout cone. This is usually correct,
except in the case of a merge conflict outside of the cone.

Modify add_pathspec_matched_against_index() to be more careful about
paths by checking the sparse-checkout patterns in addition to the
SKIP_WORKTREE bit. This causes 'git add' to no longer allow files
outside of the cone that removed the SKIP_WORKTREE bit due to a merge
conflict.

With only this change, users will only be able to add the file after
adding the file to the sparse-checkout cone. A later change will allow
users to force adding even though the file is outside of the
sparse-checkout cone.

4eaffd81a5 pathspec: stop calling ensure_full_index
The add_pathspec_matches_against_index() focuses on matching a pathspec
to file entries in the index. This already works correctly for its only
use: checking if untracked files exist in the index.

The compatibility checks in t1092 already test that 'git add <dir>'
works for a directory outside of the sparse cone. That provides coverage
for removing this guard.

This finalizes our ability to run 'git add .' without expanding a sparse
index to a full one. This is evidenced by an update to t1092 and by
these performance numbers for p2000-sparse-operations.sh:

Test HEAD~1 HEAD
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2000.10: git add . (full-index-v3) 0.37(0.28+0.07) 0.36(0.27+0.06) -2.7%
2000.11: git add . (full-index-v4) 0.33(0.26+0.06) 0.32(0.28+0.05) -3.0%
2000.12: git add . (sparse-index-v3) 0.57(0.53+0.07) 0.06(0.06+0.07) -89.5%
2000.13: git add . (sparse-index-v4) 0.57(0.53+0.07) 0.05(0.03+0.09) -91.2%

While the ~90% improvement is shown by the test results, it is worth
noting that expanding the sparse index was adding overhead in previous
commits. Comparing to the full index case, we see the performance go
from 0.33s to 0.05s, an 85% improvement.

847a9e5d4f *: remove 'const' qualifier for struct index_state
Several methods specify that they take a 'struct index_state' pointer
with the 'const' qualifier because they intend to only query the data,
not change it. However, we will be introducing a step very low in the
method stack that might modify a sparse-index to become a full index in
the case that our queries venture inside a sparse-directory entry.

This change only removes the 'const' qualifiers that are necessary for
the following change which will actually modify the implementation of
index_name_stage_pos().

a20f70478f add: warn when asked to update SKIP_WORKTREE entries
`git add` already refrains from updating SKIP_WORKTREE entries, but it
silently exits with zero code when it is asked to do so. Instead, let's
warn the user and display a hint on how to update these entries.

Note that we only warn the user whey they give a pathspec item that
matches no eligible path for updating, but it does match one or more
SKIP_WORKTREE entries. A warning was chosen over erroring out right away
to reproduce the same behavior `add` already exhibits with ignored
files. This also allow users to continue their workflow without having
to invoke `add` again with only the eligible paths (as those will have
already been added).

d70a9eb611 strvec: rename struct fields
The "argc" and "argv" names made sense when the struct was argv_array,
but now they're just confusing. Let's rename them to "nr" (which we use
for counts elsewhere) and "v" (which is rather terse, but reads well
when combined with typical variable names like "args.v").

Note that we have to update all of the callers immediately. Playing
tricks with the preprocessor is hard here, because we wouldn't want to

c972bf4cf5 strvec: convert remaining callers away from argv_array name
We eventually want to drop the argv_array name and just use strvec
consistently. There's no particular reason we have to do it all at once,
or care about interactions between converted and unconverted bits.
Because of our preprocessor compat layer, the names are interchangeable
to the compiler (so even a definition and declaration using different
names is OK).

This patch converts all of the remaining files, as the resulting diff is
reasonably sized.

The conversion was done purely mechanically with:

  git ls-files '*.c' '*.h' |
  xargs perl -i -pe '
    s/ARGV_ARRAY/STRVEC/g;
    s/argv_array/strvec/g;

24e4750c96 pathspec: add new function to parse file
This will be used to support the new option '--pathspec-from-file' in
`git add`, `git-commit`, `git reset` etc.

Note also that we specifically handle CR/LF line endings to support

To simplify code, file is first parsed into `argv_array`. This allows
to avoid refactoring `parse_pathspec()`.

I considered adding `nul_term_line` to `flags` instead, but decided
that it doesn't fit there.

The new code is mostly taken from `cmd_update_index()` and

9e4e8a64c2 pathspec: die on empty strings as pathspec
An empty string as a pathspec element matches all paths. A buggy
script, however, could accidentally assign an empty string to a
variable that then gets passed to a Git command invocation, e.g.:

path=... compute a path to be removed in $path ...
        git rm -r "$path"

which would unintentionally remove all paths in the current
directory.

The fix for this issue comprises of two steps. Step 1, which warns
that empty strings as pathspecs will become invalid, has already
been implemented in commit d426430 ("pathspec: warn on empty strings
as pathspec", 2016-06-22).

This patch is step 2. It removes the warning and throws an error
instead.

bdab972153 submodule: add die_in_unpopulated_submodule function
Currently 'git add' is the only command which dies when launched from an
unpopulated submodule (the place-holder directory for a submodule which
hasn't been checked out). This is triggered implicitly by passing the
PATHSPEC_STRIP_SUBMODULE_SLASH_EXPENSIVE flag to 'parse_pathspec()'.

Instead make this desire more explicit by creating a function
'die_in_unpopulated_submodule()' which dies if the provided 'prefix' has
a leading path component which matches a submodule in the the index.

5ce10c0a29 pathspec: fix segfault in clear_pathspec
In 'clear_pathspec()' the incorrect index parameter is used to bound an

occasionally causes segmentation faults when attempting to free an
invalid pointer. Fix this by using the correct index parameter 'i'.

be4dbbbed9 pathspec: honor PATHSPEC_PREFIX_ORIGIN with empty prefix
Previous to commit 5d8f084a5 (pathspec: simpler logic to prefix original
pathspec elements, 2017-01-04), we were always using the computed
`match` variable to perform pathspec matching whenever
`PATHSPEC_PREFIX_ORIGIN` is set. This is for example useful when passing
the parsed pathspecs to other commands, as the computed `match` may
contain a pathspec relative to the repository root. The commit changed
this logic to only do so when we do have an actual prefix and when
literal pathspecs are deactivated.

But this change may actually break some commands which expect passed
pathspecs to be relative to the repository root. One such case is `git
add --patch`, which now fails when using relative paths from a
subdirectory. For example if executing "git add -p ../foo.c" in a
subdirectory, the `git-add--interactive` command will directly pass
"../foo.c" to `git-ls-files`. As ls-files is executed at the
repository's root, the command will notice that "../foo.c" is outside
the repository and fail.

Fix the issue by again using the computed `match` variable when
`PATHSPEC_PREFIX_ORIGIN` is set and global literal pathspecs are
deactivated. Note that in contrast to previous behavior, we will now
always call `prefix_magic` regardless of whether a prefix is actually
set. But this is the right thing to do: when the `match` variable has
been resolved to the repository's root, it will be set to an empty
string. When passing the empty string directly to other commands, it
will result in a warning regarding deprecated empty pathspecs. By always
adding the prefix magic, we will end up with at least the string
":(prefix:0)" and thus avoid the warning.

c5af19f9ab pathspec: allow escaped query values
In our own .gitattributes file we have attributes such as:

    *.[ch] whitespace=indent,trail,space

When querying for attributes we want to be able to ask for the exact
value, i.e.

    git ls-files :(attr:whitespace=indent,trail,space)

should work, but the commas are used in the attr magic to introduce
the next attr, such that this query currently fails with

fatal: Invalid pathspec magic 'trail' in ':(attr:whitespace=indent, trail, space)'

This change allows escaping characters by a backslash, such that the query

    git ls-files :(attr:whitespace=indent\,trail\,space)

will match all path that have the value "indent, trail, space" for the
whitespace attribute. To accomplish this, we need to modify two places.
First `parse_long_magic` needs to not stop early upon seeing a comma or
closing paren that is escaped. As a second step we need to remove any
escaping from the attr value.

2d81c48fa7 pathspec: give better message for submodule related pathspec error
Every once in a while someone complains to the mailing list to have
run into this weird assertion[1]. The usual response from the mailing
list is link to old discussions[2], and acknowledging the problem
stating it is known.

This patch accomplishes two things:

  1. Switch assert() to die("BUG") to give a more readable message.

  2. Take one of the cases where we hit a BUG and turn it into a normal
"there was something wrong with the input" message.

This assertion triggered for cases where there wasn't a programming
bug, but just bogus input. In particular, if the user asks for a
pathspec that is inside a submodule, we shouldn't assert() or
die("BUG"); we should tell the user their request is bogus.

The only reason we did not check for it, is the expensive nature
of such a check, so callers avoid setting the flag
PATHSPEC_STRIP_SUBMODULE_SLASH_EXPENSIVE. However when we die due
to bogus input, the expense of CPU cycles spent outweighs the user
wondering what went wrong, so run that check unconditionally before
dying with a more generic error message.

Note: There is a case (e.g. "git -C submodule add .") in which we call
strip_submodule_slash_expensive, as git-add requests it via the flag
PATHSPEC_STRIP_SUBMODULE_SLASH_EXPENSIVE, but the assert used to
trigger nevertheless, because the flag PATHSPEC_LITERAL was not set,
such that we executed

	if (item->nowildcard_len < prefixlen)
		item->nowildcard_len = prefixlen;

and prefixlen was not adapted (e.g. it was computed from "submodule/")
So in the die_inside_submodule_path function we also need handle paths,
that were stripped before, i.e. are the exact submodule path. This
is why the conditions in die_inside_submodule_path are slightly
different than in strip_submodule_slash_expensive.
