When no merge.tool or diff.tool is configured or manually selected, the
selection of a default tool is sensitive to the DISPLAY variable; in a
GUI session a gui-specific tool will be proposed if found, and
otherwise a terminal-based one. This "GUI-optimizing" behavior is
important because a GUI can make a huge difference to a user's ability
to understand and correctly complete a non-trivial conflicting merge.
Some time ago the merge.guitool and diff.guitool config options were
introduced to enable users to configure both a GUI tool, and a non-GUI
tool (with fallback if no GUI tool configured), in the same environment.
Unfortunately, the --gui argument introduced to support the selection of
the guitool is still explicit. When using configured tools, there is no
equivalent of the no-tool-configured "propose a GUI tool if we are in a GUI
environment" behavior.
As proposed in <xmqqmtb8jsej.fsf@gitster.g>, introduce new configuration
options, difftool.guiDefault and mergetool.guiDefault, supporting a special
value "auto" which causes the corresponding tool or guitool to be selected
depending on the presence of a non-empty DISPLAY value. Also support "true"
to say "default to the guitool (unless --no-gui is passed on the
commandline)", and "false" as the previous default behavior when these new
configuration options are not specified.

In b6a8d09f6d (gc docs: include the "gc.*" section from "config" in
"gc", 2019-04-07) the "git gc" documentation was made to include the
config/gc.txt in its "CONFIGURATION" section. We do that in several
other places, but "git gc" was the only one with a blurb above the
include to orient the reader.
We don't want readers to carefully scrutinize "git-config(1)" and
"git-gc(1)" looking for discrepancies, instead we should tell them
that the latter includes a part of the former.
This change formalizes that wording in two new templates to be
included, one for the "git gc" case where the entire section is
included from "git-config(1)", and another for when the inclusion of
"git-config(1)" follows discussion unique to that documentation. In
order to use that re-arrange the order of those being discussed in the
"git-merge(1)" documentation.

Running 'git {merge, diff}tool --tool-help' now also prints usage
information about the vimdiff tool (and its variants) instead of just
its name.
Two new functions ('diff_cmd_help()' and 'merge_cmd_help()') have been
added to the set of functions that each merge tool (ie. scripts found
inside "mergetools/") can overwrite to provided tool specific
information.
Right now, only 'mergetools/vimdiff' implements these functions, but
other tools are encouraged to do so in the future, specially if they
take configuration options not explained anywhere else (as it is the
case with the 'vimdiff' tool and the new 'layout' option)
Note that the function 'show_tool_names', used in the implementation of
'git mergetool --tool-help', is also used in Documentation/Makefile to
generate the list of allowed values for the configuration variables
'{diff,merge}.{gui,}tool'. Adjust the rule so its output is an Asciidoc
"description list" instead of a plain list, with the tool name as the
item and the newly added tool description as the description.
In addition, a section has been added to
"Documentation/git-mergetool.txt" to explain the new "layout"
configuration option with examples.

In git-difftool, if the tool is called with --gui but `diff.guitool` is
not set, it falls back to `diff.tool`. Make git-mergetool also fallback
from `merge.guitool` to `merge.tool` if the former is undefined.
If git-difftool, when called with `--gui`, were to use
`get_configured_mergetool` in a future patch, it would also get the
fallback behavior in the following precedence:
1. diff.guitool
2. merge.guitool
3. diff.tool
4. merge.tool
The behavior for when difftool or mergetool are called without `--gui`
should be identical with or without this patch.
Note that the search loop could be written as
sections="merge"
keys="tool"
if diff_mode
then
sections="diff $sections"
fi
if gui_mode
then
keys="guitool $keys"
fi
merge_tool=$(

do
for section in $sections
do
selected=$(git config $section.$key)
if test -n "$selected"
then
echo "$selected"
return

done)
which would make adding a mode in the future much easier. However,
adding a new mode will likely never happen as it is highly discouraged
so, as a result, it is written in its current form so that it is more
readable for future readers.

The original motivation of using the prompt was to confirm to run a
tool on this particular (as opposed to another) path, but the user
can also take the prompt as to confirm to run this (as opposed to
some other) tool. The latter of which of course is irritating for
those who told which exact tool to use, which is the reason why we
are flipping the default.
During the review discussion of the patch, many people (including
the maintainer) missed that a user can find the prompt useful way to
skip running the tool on particular paths. Clarify it by adding a

Mergetool now treats its path arguments as a pathspec (like other git
subcommands), restricting action to the given files and directories.
Files matching the pathspec are filtered so mergetool only acts on
unmerged paths; previously it would assume each path argument was in an
unresolved state, and get confused when it couldn't check out their
other stages.

The SYNOPSIS sections of most commands that span several lines already
use [verse] to retain line breaks. Most commands that don't span
several lines seem not to use [verse]. In the HTML output, [verse]
does not only preserve line breaks, but also makes the section
indented, which causes a slight inconsistency between commands that
use [verse] and those that don't. Use [verse] in all SYNOPSIS sections
for consistency.
Also remove the blank lines from git-fetch.txt and git-rebase.txt to
align with the other man pages. In the case of git-rebase.txt, which
already uses [verse], the blank line makes the [verse] not apply to
the last line, so removing the blank line also makes the formatting
within the document more consistent.

The point of these sections is generally to:
1. Give credit where it is due.
2. Give the reader an idea of where to ask questions or
file bug reports.
But they don't do a good job of either case. For (1), they
are out of date and incomplete. A much more accurate answer
can be gotten through shortlog or blame. For (2), the
correct contact point is generally git@vger, and even if you
wanted to cc the contact point, the out-of-date and
incomplete fields mean you're likely sending to somebody
useless.
So let's drop the fields entirely from all manpages except
git(1) itself. We already point people to the mailing list
for bug reports there, and we can update the Authors section
to give credit to the major contributors and point to
shortlog and blame for more information.
Each page has a "This is part of git" footer, so people can
follow that to the main git manpage.

Since the git-* commands are not installed in $(bindir), using
"git-command <parameters>" in examples in the documentation is
not a good idea. On the other hand, it is nice to be able to
refer to each command using one hyphenated word. (There is no
escaping it, anyway: man page names cannot have spaces in them.)
This patch retains the dash in naming an operation, command,
program, process, or action. Complete command lines that can
be entered at a shell (i.e., without options omitted) are
made to use the dashless form.

This commit adds a mechanism to provide absolute paths to the
external programs called by 'git mergetool'. A path can be
specified in the configuation variable mergetool.<tool>.path.
The configuration variable is similar to how we name branches
and remotes. It is extensible if we need to specify more details
about a tool.
The mechanism is especially useful on Windows, where external
programs are unlikely to be in PATH.
