Jeff King 7c5045fc18 ref-filter: apply fallback refname sort only after all user sorts
Commit 9e468334b4 (ref-filter: fallback on alphabetical comparison,
2015-10-30) taught ref-filter's sort to fallback to comparing refnames.
But it did it at the wrong level, overriding the comparison result for a
single "--sort" key from the user, rather than after all sort keys have
been exhausted.

This worked correctly for a single "--sort" option, but not for multiple
ones. We'd break any ties in the first key with the refname and never
evaluate the second key at all.

To make matters even more interesting, we only applied this fallback
sometimes! For a field like "taggeremail" which requires a string
comparison, we'd truly return the result of strcmp(), even if it was 0.
But for numerical "value" fields like "taggerdate", we did apply the
fallback. And that's why our multiple-sort test missed this: it uses
taggeremail as the main comparison.

So let's start by adding a much more rigorous test. We'll have a set of
commits expressing every combination of two tagger emails, dates, and
refnames. Then we can confirm that our sort is applied with the correct
precedence, and we'll be hitting both the string and value comparators.

That does show the bug, and the fix is simple: moving the fallback to
the outer compare_refs() function, after all ref_sorting keys have been
exhausted.

Note that in the outer function we don't have an "ignore_case" flag, as
it's part of each individual ref_sorting element. It's debatable what
such a fallback should do, since we didn't use the user's keys to match.
But until now we have been trying to respect that flag, so the
least-invasive thing is to try to continue to do so. Since all callers
in the current code either set the flag for all keys or for none, we can
just pull the flag from the first key. In a hypothetical world where the
user really can flip the case-insensitivity of keys separately, we may
want to extend the code to distinguish that case from a blanket
"--ignore-case".

Jeff King 76f9e569ad ref-filter: apply --ignore-case to all sorting keys
All of the ref-filter users (for-each-ref, branch, and tag) take an
--ignore-case option which makes filtering and sorting case-insensitive.
However, this option was applied only to the first element of the
ref_sorting list. So:

  git for-each-ref --ignore-case --sort=refname

would do what you expect, but:

  git for-each-ref --ignore-case --sort=refname --sort=taggername

would sort the primary key (taggername) case-insensitively, but sort the
refname case-sensitively. We have two options here:

  - teach callers to set ignore_case on the whole list

  - replace the ref_sorting list with a struct that contains both the
    list of sorting keys, as well as options that apply to _all_
    keys

I went with the first one here, as it gives more flexibility if we later
want to let the users set the flag per-key (presumably through some
special syntax when defining the key; for now it's all or nothing
through --ignore-case).

The new test covers this by sorting on both tagger and subject
case-insensitively, which should compare "a" and "A" identically, but
still sort them before "b" and "B". We'll break ties by sorting on the
refname to give ourselves a stable output (this is actually supposed to
be done automatically, but there's another bug which will be fixed in
the next commit).

Jeff King af8ccd8ade remote: drop "explicit" parameter from remote_ref_for_branch()
Commit 9700fae5ee (for-each-ref: let upstream/push report the remote
ref name, 2017-11-07) added a remote_ref_for_branch() helper, which
is modeled after remote_for_branch(). This includes providing an
"explicit" out-parameter that tells the caller whether the remote
was configured by the user, or whether we picked a default name like
"origin".

But unlike remote names, there is no default name when the user
didn't configure one.  The only way the "explicit" parameter is used
by the caller is to use the value returned from the helper when it
is set, and use an empty string otherwise, ignoring the returned
value from the helper.

Let's drop the "explicit" out-parameter, and return NULL when the
returned value from the helper should be ignored, to simplify the
function interface.

Jeff King b99b6bcc57 packed_object_info(): use object_id for returning delta base
If a caller sets the object_info.delta_base_sha1 to a non-NULL pointer,
we'll write the oid of the object's delta base to it. But we can
increase our type safety by switching this to a real object_id struct.
All of our callers are just pointing into the hash member of an
object_id anyway, so there's no inconvenience.

Note that we do still keep it as a pointer-to-struct, because the NULL
sentinel value tells us whether the caller is even interested in the
information.

Eric Wong c8e424c9c9 hashmap: introduce hashmap_free_entries
`hashmap_free_entries' behaves like `container_of' and passes
the offset of the hashmap_entry struct to the internal
`hashmap_free_' function, allowing the function to free any
struct pointer regardless of where the hashmap_entry field
is located.

`hashmap_free' no longer takes any arguments aside from
the hashmap itself.

René Scharfe c77722b3ea use get_tagged_oid()
Avoid derefencing ->tagged without checking for NULL by using the
convenience wrapper for getting the ID of the tagged object.  It die()s
when encountering a broken tag instead of segfaulting.

Martin Ågren 14d30cdfc0 ref-filter: fix memory leak in free_array_item()
We treat the `value` pointer as a pointer to a struct and free its `s`
field. But `value` is in fact an array of structs. As a result, we only
free the first `s` out of `used_atom_cnt`-many and leak the rest. Make
sure we free all items in `value`.

In the caller, `ref_array_clear()`, this means we need to be careful not
to zero `used_atom_cnt` until after we've called `free_array_item()`. We
could move just a single line, but let's keep related things close
together instead, by first handling `array`, then `used_atom`.

Taylor Blau b31e2680c4 ref-filter.c: find disjoint pattern prefixes
Since cfe004a5a9 (ref-filter: limit traversal to prefix, 2017-05-22),
the ref-filter code has sought to limit the traversals to a prefix of
the given patterns.

That code stopped short of handling more than one pattern, because it
means invoking 'for_each_ref_in' multiple times. If we're not careful
about which patterns overlap, we will output the same refs multiple
times.

For instance, consider the set of patterns 'refs/heads/a/*',
'refs/heads/a/b/c', and 'refs/tags/v1.0.0'. If we naïvely ran:

  for_each_ref_in("refs/heads/a/*", ...);
  for_each_ref_in("refs/heads/a/b/c", ...);
  for_each_ref_in("refs/tags/v1.0.0", ...);

we would see 'refs/heads/a/b/c' (and everything underneath it) twice.

Instead, we want to partition the patterns into disjoint sets, where we
know that no ref will be matched by any two patterns in different sets.
In the above, these are:

  - {'refs/heads/a/*', 'refs/heads/a/b/c'}, and
  - {'refs/tags/v1.0.0'}

Given one of these disjoint sets, what is a suitable pattern to pass to
'for_each_ref_in'? One approach is to compute the longest common prefix
over all elements in that disjoint set, and let the caller cull out the
refs they didn't want. Computing the longest prefix means that in most
cases, we won't match too many things the caller would like to ignore.

The longest common prefixes of the above are:

  - {'refs/heads/a/*', 'refs/heads/a/b/c'} -> refs/heads/a/*
  - {'refs/tags/v1.0.0'}                   -> refs/tags/v1.0.0

We instead invoke:

  for_each_ref_in("refs/heads/a/*", ...);
  for_each_ref_in("refs/tags/v1.0.0", ...);

Which provides us with the refs we were looking for with a minimal
amount of extra cruft, but never a duplicate of the ref we asked for.

Implemented here is an algorithm which accomplishes the above, which
works as follows:

  1. Lexicographically sort the given list of patterns.

  2. Initialize 'prefix' to the empty string, where our goal is to
     build each element in the above set of longest common prefixes.

  3. Consider each pattern in the given set, and emit 'prefix' if it
     reaches the end of a pattern, or touches a wildcard character. The
     end of a string is treated as if it precedes a wildcard. (Note that
     there is some room for future work to detect that, e.g., 'a?b' and
     'abc' are disjoint).

  4. Otherwise, recurse on step (3) with the slice of the list
     corresponding to our current prefix (i.e., the subset of patterns
     that have our prefix as a literal string prefix.)

This algorithm is 'O(kn + n log(n))', where 'k' is max(len(pattern)) for
each pattern in the list, and 'n' is len(patterns).

By discovering this set of interesting patterns, we reduce the runtime
of multi-pattern 'git for-each-ref' (and other ref traversals) from
O(N) to O(n log(N)), where 'N' is the total number of packed references.

Running 'git for-each-ref refs/tags/a refs/tags/b' on a repository with
10,000,000 refs in 'refs/tags/huge-N', my best-of-five times drop from:

  real    0m5.805s
  user    0m5.188s
  sys     0m0.468s

to:

  real    0m0.001s
  user    0m0.000s
  sys     0m0.000s

On linux.git, the times to dig out two of the latest -rc tags drops from
0.002s to 0.001s, so the change on repositories with fewer tags is much
less noticeable.

Matthew DeVore 28438e84e0 ref-filter: sort detached HEAD lines firstly
Before this patch, "git branch" would put "(HEAD detached...)" and "(no
branch, rebasing...)" lines before all the other branches *in most
cases* except for when using Chinese-language messages. zh_CN generally
uses a full-width "(" symbol (codepoint FF08) to match the full-width
proportions of Chinese characters, and the translated strings we had did
use them. This meant that the detached HEAD line would appear after all
local refs and even after the remote refs if there were any.

AFAIK, it is sometimes not jarring to see the half-width parenthesis in
"full-width" text as in the CJK languages, for instance when there are
no characters preceding or following the parenthesized text fragment. By
removing the parenthesis from the localizable text, we can share strings
with wt-status.c and remove a cautionary comment to translators.

Remove the ( from the localizable portion of messages so the sorting
happens properly regardless of locale.

Damien Robert c646d0934e ref-filter: use correct branch for %(push:track)
In ref-filter.c, when processing the atom %(push:track), the
ahead/behind values are computed using `stat_tracking_info` which refers
to the upstream branch.

Fix that by introducing a new flag `for_push` in `stat_tracking_info`
in remote.c, which does the same thing but for the push branch.
Update the few callers of `stat_tracking_info` to handle this flag. This
ensure that whenever we use this function in the future, we are careful
to specify is this should apply to the upstream or the push branch.

This bug was not detected in t/t6300-for-each-ref.sh because in the test
for push:track, both the upstream and the push branches were behind by 1
from the local branch. Change the test so that the upstream branch is
behind by 1 while the push branch is ahead by 1. This allows us to test
that %(push:track) refers to the correct branch.

This changes the expected value of some following tests (by introducing
new references), so update them too.

Jeff King 95be717cd5 parse_opt_ref_sorting: always use with NONEG flag
The "--sort" parameter of for-each-ref, etc, does not handle negation,
and instead returns an error to the parse-options code. But neither
piece of code prints anything for the user, which may leave them
confused:

  $ git for-each-ref --no-sort
  $ echo $?
  129

As the comment in the callback function notes, this probably should
clear the list, which would make it consistent with other list-like
options (i.e., anything that uses OPT_STRING_LIST currently).
Unfortunately that's a bit tricky due to the way the ref-filter code
works. But in the meantime, let's at least make the error a little less
confusing:

  - switch to using PARSE_OPT_NONEG in the option definition, which will
    cause the options code to produce a useful message

  - since this was cut-and-pasted to four different spots, let's define
    a single OPT_REF_SORT() macro that we can use everywhere

  - the callback can use BUG_ON_OPT_NEG() to make sure the correct flags
    are used (incidentally, this also satisfies -Wunused-parameters,
    since we're now looking at "unset")

  - expand the comment into a NEEDSWORK to make it clear that the
    direction is right, but the details need to be worked out

Jeff King 5c326d1252 ref-filter: drop unused "sz" parameters
Many of our grab_* functions, which parse the object content, take a
buf/sz pair of the object bytes. However, the functions which actually
parse the buffers (like find_wholine() and find_subpos()) never look at
"sz", and instead use functions like strchr() and strchrnul() that
assume the result is NUL-terminated.

This is OK in practice (and common for Git's parsing code), since we
always allocate an extra NUL when loading an object into memory (and
likewise, we are OK with stopping parsing if a commit or tag contains an
embedded NUL).

Let's drop these extra "sz" parameters, as they are misleading about how
the functions intend to access the buffer. We can drop from both the
functions mentioned above, which in turn lets us drop from their
callers, cascading all the way up to the top-level grab_values().

Jeff King 25051cac80 ref-filter: drop unused "obj" parameters
The grab_person() and grab_sub_body_contents() functions take both an
object struct and a buf/sz pair of the object bytes. However, they use
only the latter, since "struct object" does not contain the parsed ident
(nor the whole commit message, of course).

Let's get rid of these misleading "struct object" parameters. It's
possible we may want them in the future (e.g., to generate error
messages that mention the object id), but since these are static
functions, we can easily add them back in later (and if we do want that
information, it's likely we'd pass it through a more generalized
"parsing context" struct anyway).

Olga Telezhnaya 33311fa1ad ref-filter: add deltabase option
Add new formatting option: deltabase.
If the object is stored as a delta on-disk, this expands
to the 40-hex sha1 of the delta base object.
Otherwise, expands to the null sha1 (40 zeroes).
We have same option in cat-file command.
Hopefully, in the end I will remove formatting code from
cat-file and reuse formatting parts from ref-filter.

SZEDER Gábor 47bd3d0c14 ref-filter: don't look for objects when outside of a repository
The command 'git ls-remote --sort=authordate <remote>' segfaults when
run outside of a repository, ever since the introduction of its
'--sort' option in 1fb20dfd8e (ls-remote: create '--sort' option,
2018-04-09).

While in general the 'git ls-remote' command can be run outside of a
repository just fine, its '--sort=<key>' option with certain keys does
require access to the referenced objects.  This sorting is implemented
using the generic ref-filter sorting facility, which already handles
missing objects gracefully with the appropriate 'missing object
deadbeef for HEAD' message.  However, being generic means that it
checks replace refs while trying to retrieve an object, and while
doing so it accesses the 'git_replace_ref_base' variable, which has
not been initialized and is still a NULL pointer when outside of a
repository, thus causing the segfault.

Make ref-filter more careful upfront while parsing the format string,
and make it error out when encountering a format atom requiring object
access when we are not in a repository.  Also add a test to ensure
that 'git ls-remote --sort' fails gracefully when executed outside of
a repository.

Torsten Bögershausen ca473cef91 Upcast size_t variables to uintmax_t when printing
When printing variables which contain a size, today "unsigned long"
is used at many places.
In order to be able to change the type from "unsigned long" into size_t
some day in the future, we need to have a way to print 64 bit variables
on a system that has "unsigned long" defined to be 32 bit, like Win64.

Upcast all those variables into uintmax_t before they are printed.
This is to prepare for a bigger change, when "unsigned long"
will be converted into size_t for variables which may be > 4Gib.

Nguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy 9440b831ad parse-options: replace opterror() with optname()
Introduce optname() that does the early half of original opterror() to
come up with the name of the option reported back to the user, and use
it to kill opterror().  The callers of opterror() now directly call
error() using the string returned by opterror() instead.

There are a few issues with opterror()

- it tries to assemble an English sentence from pieces. This is not
  great for translators because we give them pieces instead of a full
  sentence.

- It's a wrapper around error() and needs some hack to let the
  compiler know it always returns -1.

- Since it takes a string instead of printf format, one call site has
  to assemble the string manually before passing to it.

Using error() directly solves the second and third problems.

It kind helps the first problem as well because "%s does foo" does
give a translator a full sentence in a sense and let them reorder if
needed. But it has limitations, if the subject part has to change
based on the rest of the sentence, that language is screwed. This is
also why I try to avoid calling optname() when 'flags' is known in
advance.

Mark of these strings for translation as well while at there.

Jeff King 517fe807d6 assert NOARG/NONEG behavior of parse-options callbacks
When we define a parse-options callback, the flags we put in the option
struct must match what the callback expects. For example, a callback
which does not handle the "unset" parameter should only be used with
PARSE_OPT_NONEG. But since the callback and the option struct are not
defined next to each other, it's easy to get this wrong (as earlier
patches in this series show).

Fortunately, the compiler can help us here: compiling with
-Wunused-parameters can show us which callbacks ignore their "unset"
parameters (and likewise, ones that ignore "arg" expect to be triggered
with PARSE_OPT_NOARG).

But after we've inspected a callback and determined that all of its
callers use the right flags, what do we do next? We'd like to silence
the compiler warning, but do so in a way that will catch any wrong calls
in the future.

We can do that by actually checking those variables and asserting that
they match our expectations. Because this is such a common pattern,
we'll introduce some helper macros. The resulting messages aren't
as descriptive as we could make them, but the file/line information from
BUG() is enough to identify the problem (and anyway, the point is that
these should never be seen).

Each of the annotated callbacks in this patch triggers
-Wunused-parameters, and was manually inspected to make sure all callers
use the correct options (so none of these BUGs should be triggerable).

There are several commit walks in the codebase. Group them together into
a new commit-reach.c file and corresponding header. After we group these
walks into one place, we can reduce duplicate logic by calling
equivalent methods.

All methods are direct moves, except we also make the commit_contains()
method public so its consumers in ref-filter.c can still call it. We can
also test this method in a test-tool in a later commit.

Jonathan Tan dade47c06c commit-graph: add repo arg to graph readers
Add a struct repository argument to the functions in commit-graph.h that
read the commit graph. (This commit does not affect functions that write
commit graphs.)

Because the commit graph functions can now read the commit graph of any
repository, the global variable core_commit_graph has been removed.
Instead, the config option core.commitGraph is now read on the first
time in a repository that a commit is attempted to be parsed using its
commit graph.

This commit includes a test that exercises the functionality on an
arbitrary repository that is not the_repository.

Olga Telezhnaya 20a9c15619 ref-filter: fill empty fields with empty values
Atoms like "align" or "end" do not have string representation.
Earlier we had to go and parse whole object with a hope that we
could fill their string representations. It's easier to fill them
with an empty string before we start to work with whole object.

It is important to mention that we fill only these atoms that must
contain nothing. So, if we could not fill the atom because, for example,
the object is missing, we leave it with NULL.

Jeff King e674eb2528 ref-filter: avoid backend filtering with --ignore-case
When for-each-ref is used with --ignore-case, we expect
match_name_as_path() to do a case-insensitive match. But
there's an extra layer of filtering that happens before we
even get there. Since commit cfe004a5a9 (ref-filter: limit
traversal to prefix, 2017-05-22), we feed the prefix to the
ref backend so that it can optimize the ref iteration.

There's no mechanism for us to tell the backend we're matching
case-insensitively.  Nor is there likely to be one anytime soon,
since the packed backend relies on binary-searching the sorted list
of refs. Let's just punt on this case. The extra filtering is an
optimization that we simply can't do. We'll still give the correct
answer via the filtering in match_name_as_path().

Aleksandr Makarov 639ab5efa1 for-each-ref: consistently pass WM_IGNORECASE flag
The match_name_as_path() function learned to set
WM_IGNORECASE in the "flags" field when the user passed
--ignore-case. But it forgot to actually pass the flags to
wildmatch()!

As a result, the --ignore-case feature has been broken since
it was added in 3bb16a8bf2 (tag, branch, for-each-ref: add
--ignore-case for sorting and filtering, 2016-12-04). We
didn't notice because we added tests only for git-branch and
git-tag. Whereas git-for-each-ref has slightly different
matching rules, and thus uses a different function (the
related function match_pattern() does it correctly).

Incidentally, this also caused clang's scan-build to
complain about the code; the assignment to "flags" was dead
code.

Note that we can't flip the test in t6300 to expect_success
yet. There's another bug, which will be dealt with in the
next patch.

Stefan Beller 109cd76dd3 object: add repository argument to parse_object
Add a repository argument to allow the callers of parse_object
to be more specific about which repository to act on. This is a small
mechanical change; it doesn't change the implementation to handle
repositories other than the_repository yet.

As with the previous commits, use a macro to catch callers passing a
repository other than the_repository at compile time.

Derrick Stolee 819807b33f ref-filter: use generation number for --contains
A commit A can reach a commit B only if the generation number of A
is strictly larger than the generation number of B. This condition
allows significantly short-circuiting commit-graph walks.

Use generation number for '--contains' type queries.

On a copy of the Linux repository where HEAD is contained in v4.13
but no earlier tag, the command 'git tag --contains HEAD' had the
following peformance improvement:

Before: 0.81s
After:  0.04s
Rel %:  -95%

Stefan Beller cbd53a2193 object-store: move object access functions to object-store.h
This should make these functions easier to find and cache.h less
overwhelming to read.

In particular, this moves:
- read_object_file
- oid_object_info
- write_object_file

As a result, most of the codebase needs to #include object-store.h.
In this patch the #include is only added to files that would fail to
compile otherwise.  It would be better to #include wherever
identifiers from the header are used.  That can happen later
when we have better tooling for it.

Johannes Schindelin 033abf97fc Replace all die("BUG: ...") calls by BUG() ones
In d8193743e0 (usage.c: add BUG() function, 2017-05-12), a new macro
was introduced to use for reporting bugs instead of die(). It was then
subsequently used to convert one single caller in 588a538ae5
(setup_git_env: convert die("BUG") to BUG(), 2017-05-12).

The cover letter of the patch series containing this patch
(cf 20170513032414.mfrwabt4hovujde2@sigill.intra.peff.net) is not
terribly clear why only one call site was converted, or what the plan
is for other, similar calls to die() to report bugs.

Let's just convert all remaining ones in one fell swoop.

This trick was performed by this invocation:

	sed -i 's/die("BUG: /BUG("/g' $(git grep -l 'die("BUG' \*.c)

In anticipation of making trees load lazily, create a Coccinelle
script (contrib/coccinelle/commit.cocci) to ensure that all
references to the 'maybe_tree' member of struct commit are either
mutations or accesses through get_commit_tree() or
get_commit_tree_oid().

Apply the Coccinelle script to create the rest of the patch.

Derrick Stolee 891435d55d treewide: rename tree to maybe_tree
Using the commit-graph file to walk commit history removes the large
cost of parsing commits during the walk. This exposes a performance
issue: lookup_tree() takes a large portion of the computation time,
even when Git never uses those trees.

In anticipation of lazy-loading these trees, rename the 'tree' member
of struct commit to 'maybe_tree'. This serves two purposes: it hints
at the future role of possibly being NULL even if the commit has a
valid tree, and it allows for unambiguous transformation from simple
member access (i.e. commit->maybe_tree) to method access.

In preparation for callers constructing their own ref_array
structs, let's move our own internal push operation into its
own function.

While we're at it, we can replace REALLOC_ARRAY() with
ALLOC_GROW(), which should give the growth operation
amortized linear complexity (as opposed to growing by one,
which is potentially quadratic, though in-place realloc
growth often makes this faster in practice).

Jeff King 0ffaa00f45 ref-filter: make ref_array_item allocation more consistent
We have a helper function to allocate ref_array_item
structs, but it only takes a subset of the possible fields
in the struct as initializers. We could have it accept an
argument for _every_ field, but that becomes a pain for the
fields which some callers don't want to set initially.

Instead, let's be explicit that it takes only the minimum
required to create the ref, and that callers should then
fill in the rest themselves.

Kaartic Sivaraam a236f900d8 branch --list: print useful info whilst interactive rebasing a detached HEAD
When rebasing interactively (rebase -i), "git branch --list" prints
a line indicating the current branch being rebased. This works well
when the interactive rebase is initiated when a local branch is
checked out.

This doesn't play well when the rebase is initiated on a detached
HEAD. When "git branch --list" tries to print information related
to the interactive rebase in this case it tries to print the name
of a branch using an uninitialized variable and thus tries to
print a "null pointer string". As a consequence, it does not provide
useful information while also inducing undefined behaviour.

So, print the point from which the rebase was started when interactive
rebasing a detached HEAD.

This is a first step in removing die() calls from ref-filter
formatting logic, so that it could be used by other commands
that do not want to die during formatting process.
die() calls related to bugs in code will not be touched in this patch.

Everything would be the same for show_ref_array_item() users.
But, if you want to deal with errors by your own, you could invoke
format_ref_array_item(). It means that you need to print everything
(the result and errors) on your side.

This commit changes signature of format_ref_array_item() by adding
return value and strbuf parameter for errors, and adjusts
its callers. While at it, reduce the scope of the out-variable.

Jeff Hostetler d7d1b496ae stat_tracking_info: return +1 when branches not equal
Extend stat_tracking_info() to return +1 when branches are not equal and to
take a new "enum ahead_behind_flags" argument to allow skipping the (possibly
expensive) ahead/behind computation.

This will be used in the next commit to allow "git status" to avoid full
ahead/behind calculations for performance reasons.

The implementation chooses *not* to DWIM the push remote if no explicit
push remote was configured; The reason is that it is possible to DWIM this
by using

	%(if)%(push:remotename)%(then)
		%(push:remotename)
	%(else)
		%(upstream:remotename)
	%(end)

while it would be impossible to "un-DWIM" the information in case the
caller is really only interested in explicit push remotes.

While `:remote` would be shorter, it would also be a bit more ambiguous,
and it would also shut the door e.g. for `:remoteref` (which would
obviously refer to the corresponding ref in the remote repository).

Note: the dashless, non-CamelCased form `:remotename` follows the
example of the `:trackshort` example.

Taylor Blau bea4dbeafd ref-filter.c: pass empty-string as NULL to atom parsers
Peff points out that different atom parsers handle the empty
"sub-argument" list differently. An example of this is the format
"%(refname:)".

Since callers often use `string_list_split` (which splits the empty
string with any delimiter as a 1-ary string_list containing the empty
string), this makes handling empty sub-argument strings non-ergonomic.

Let's fix this by declaring that atom parser implementations must
not care about distinguishing between the empty string "%(refname:)"
and no sub-arguments "%(refname)".  Current code aborts, either with
"unrecognised arg" (e.g. "refname:") or "does not take args"
(e.g. "body:") as an error message.

Taylor Blau 7a5edbdb74 ref-filter.c: parse trailers arguments with %(contents) atom
The %(contents) atom takes a contents "field" as its argument. Since
"trailers" is one of those fields, extend contents_atom_parser to parse
"trailers"'s arguments when used through "%(contents)", like:

  %(contents:trailers:unfold,only)

A caveat: trailers_atom_parser expects NULL when no arguments are given
(see: `parse_ref_filter_atom`). This is because string_list_split (given
a maxsplit of -1) returns a 1-ary string_list* containing the given
string if the delimiter could not be found using `strchr`.

To simulate this behavior without teaching trailers_atom_parser to
accept strings with length zero, conditionally pass NULL to
trailers_atom_parser if the arguments portion of the argument to
%(contents) is empty.

Jeff King 11b087adfd ref-filter: consult want_color() before emitting colors
When color placeholders like %(color:red) are used in a
ref-filter format, we unconditionally output the colors,
even if the user has asked us for no colors. This usually
isn't a problem when the user is constructing a --format on
the command line, but it means we may do the wrong thing
when the format is fed from a script or alias. For example:

   $ git config alias.b 'branch --format=%(color:green)%(refname)'
   $ git b --no-color

should probably omit the green color. Likewise, running:

   $ git b >branches

should probably also omit the color, just as we would for
all baked-in coloring (and as we recently started to do for
user-specified colors in --pretty formats).

This commit makes both of those cases work by teaching
the ref-filter code to consult want_color() before
outputting any color. The color flag in ref_format defaults
to "-1", which means we'll consult color.ui, which in turn
defaults to the usual isatty() check on stdout. However,
callers like git-branch which support their own color config
(and command-line options) can override that.

The new tests independently cover all three of the callers
of ref-filter (for-each-ref, tag, and branch). Even though
these seem redundant, it confirms that we've correctly
plumbed through all of the necessary config to make colors
work by default.

Jeff King ab7ded34d6 ref-filter: pass ref_format struct to atom parsers
The callback for parsing each formatting atom gets to see
only the atom struct (which it's filling in) and the text to
be parsed. This doesn't leave any room for it to behave
differently based on context known only to the ref_format.

We can solve this by passing in the surrounding ref_format
to each parser. Note that this makes things slightly awkward
for sort strings, which parse atoms without having a
ref_format. We'll solve that by using a dummy ref_format
with default parameters.

Jeff King 18a2565016 ref-filter: provide a function for parsing sort options
The ref-filter module currently provides a callback suitable
for parsing command-line --sort options. But since git-tag
also supports the tag.sort config option, it needs a
function whose implementation is quite similar, but with a
slightly different interface. The end result is that
builtin/tag.c has a copy-paste of parse_opt_ref_sorting().

Instead, let's provide a function to parse an arbitrary
sort string, which we can then trivially wrap to make the
parse_opt variant.

Jeff King bf285ae6db ref-filter: move need_color_reset_at_eol into ref_format
Calling verify_ref_format() doesn't just confirm that the
format is sane; it actually sets some global variables that
will be used later when formatting the refs. These logically
should belong to the ref_format, which would make it
possible to use multiple formats within a single program
invocation.

Let's move one such flag into the ref_format struct. There
are still others that would need to be moved before it would
be safe to use multiple formats, but this commit gives a
blueprint for how that should look.

Jeff King 4a68e36d7d ref-filter: abstract ref format into its own struct
The ref-filter module provides routines for formatting a ref
for output. The fundamental interface for the format is a
"const char *" containing the format, and any additional
options need to be passed to each invocation of
show_ref_array_item.

Instead, let's make a ref_format struct that holds the
format, along with any associated format options. That will
make some enhancements easier in the future:

  1. new formatting options can be added without disrupting
     existing callers

  2. some state can be carried in the struct rather than as
     global variables

For now this just has the text format itself along with the
quote_style option, but we'll add more fields in future patches.

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 55d3426929 wildmatch: remove unused wildopts parameter
Remove the unused wildopts placeholder struct from being passed to all
wildmatch() invocations, or rather remove all the boilerplate NULL
parameters.

This parameter was added back in commit 9b3497cab9 ("wildmatch: rename
constants and update prototype", 2013-01-01) as a placeholder for
future use. Over 4 years later nothing has made use of it, let's just
remove it. It can be added in the future if we find some reason to
start using such a parameter.

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 66f5f6dca9 C style: use standard style for "TRANSLATORS" comments
Change all the "TRANSLATORS: [...]" comments in the C code to use the
regular Git coding style, and amend the style guide so that the
example there uses that style.

This custom style was necessary back in 2010 when the gettext support
was initially added, and was subsequently documented in commit
cbcfd4e3ea ("i18n: mention "TRANSLATORS:" marker in
Documentation/CodingGuidelines", 2014-04-18).

GNU xgettext hasn't had the parsing limitation that necessitated this
exception for almost 3 years. Since its 0.19 release on 2014-06-02
it's been able to recognize TRANSLATOR comments in the standard Git
comment syntax[1].

Usually we'd like to keep compatibility with software that's that
young, but in this case literally the only person who needs to be
using a gettext newer than 3 years old is Jiang Xin (the only person
who runs & commits "make pot" results), so I think in this case we can
make an exception.

This xgettext parsing feature was added after a thread on the Git
mailing list[2] which continued on the bug-gettext[3] list, but we
never subsequently changed our style & styleguide, do so.

There are already longstanding changes in git that use the standard
comment style & have their TRANSLATORS comments extracted properly
without getting the literal "*"'s mixed up in the text, as would
happen before xgettext 0.19.

Commit 7ff2683253 ("builtin-am: implement -i/--interactive",
2015-08-04) added one such comment, which in commit df0617bfa7 ("l10n:
git.pot: v2.6.0 round 1 (123 new, 41 removed)", 2015-09-05) got picked
up in the po/git.pot file with the right format, showing that Jiang
already runs a modern xgettext.

The xgettext parser does not handle the sort of non-standard comment
style that I'm amending here in sequencer.c, but that isn't standard
Git comment syntax anyway. With this change to sequencer.c & "make
pot" the comment in the pot file is now correct:

     #. TRANSLATORS: %s will be "revert", "cherry-pick" or
    -#. * "rebase -i".
    +#. "rebase -i".

Jeff King cfe004a5a9 ref-filter: limit traversal to prefix
When we are matching refnames against a pattern, then we know that the
beginning of any refname that can match the pattern has to match the
part of the pattern up to the first glob character. For example, if
the pattern is `refs/heads/foo*bar`, then it can only match a
reference that has the prefix `refs/heads/foo`.

So pass that prefix to `for_each_fullref_in()`. This lets the ref code
avoid passing us the full set of refs, and in some cases avoid reading
them in the first place.

Note that this applies only when the `match_as_path` flag is set
(i.e., when `for-each-ref` is the caller), as the matching rules for
git-branch and git-tag are subtly different.

This could be generalized to the case of multiple patterns, but (a) it
probably doesn't come up that often, and (b) it is more awkward to
deal with multiple patterns (e.g., the patterns might not be
disjoint). So, since this is just an optimization, punt on the case of
multiple patterns.

Jeff King 613a0e52ea ref-filter: resolve HEAD when parsing %(HEAD) atom
If the user asks to display (or sort by) the %(HEAD) atom,
ref-filter has to compare each refname to the value of HEAD.
We do so by resolving HEAD fresh when calling populate_value()
on each ref. If there are a large number of refs, this can
have a measurable impact on runtime.

Instead, let's resolve HEAD once when we realize we need the
%(HEAD) atom, allowing us to do a simple string comparison
for each ref. On a repository with 3000 branches (high, but
an actual example found in the wild) this drops the
best-of-five time to run "git branch >/dev/null" from 59ms
to 48ms (~20% savings).

Convert lookup_commit, lookup_commit_or_die,

struct object_id arguments.

Introduce a temporary in parse_object buffer in order to convert this
function.  This is required since in order to convert parse_object and
parse_object_buffer, lookup_commit_reference_gently and
lookup_commit_or_die would need to be converted.  Not introducing a
temporary would therefore require that lookup_commit_or_die take a
struct object_id *, but lookup_commit would take unsigned char *,
leaving a confusing and hard-to-use interface.

parse_object_buffer will lose this temporary in a later patch.

Git's source code assumes that unsigned long is at least as precise as
time_t. Which is incorrect, and causes a lot of problems, in particular
where unsigned long is only 32-bit (notably on Windows, even in 64-bit
versions).

So let's just use a more appropriate data type instead. In preparation
for this, we introduce the new `timestamp_t` data type.

By necessity, this is a very, very large patch, as it has to replace all
timestamps' data type in one go.

As we will use a data type that is not necessarily identical to `time_t`,
we need to be very careful to use `time_t` whenever we interact with the
system functions, and `timestamp_t` everywhere else.

Johannes Schindelin 1aeb7e756c parse_timestamp(): specify explicitly where we parse timestamps
Currently, Git's source code represents all timestamps as `unsigned
long`. In preparation for using a more appropriate data type, let's
introduce a symbol `parse_timestamp` (currently being defined to
`strtoul`) where appropriate, so that we can later easily switch to,
say, use `strtoull()` instead.

Johannes Schindelin e467dc148d ref-filter: avoid using unsigned long for catch-all data type
In its `atom_value` struct, the ref-filter source code wants to store
different values in a field called `ul` (for `unsigned long`), e.g.
timestamps.

However, as we are about to switch the data type of timestamps away from
`unsigned long` (because it may be 32-bit even when `time_t` is 64-bit),
that data type is not large enough.

Simply change that field to use `uintmax_t` instead.

This patch is a bit larger than the mere change of the data type
because the field's name was tied to its data type, which has been fixed
at the same time.

brian m. carlson 910650d2f8 Rename sha1_array to oid_array
Since this structure handles an array of object IDs, rename it to struct
oid_array.  Also rename the accessor functions and the initialization
constant.

This commit was produced mechanically by providing non-Documentation
