Doc updates to clarify what an "unborn branch" means.
* jc/orphan-unborn:
orphan/unborn: fix use of 'orphan' in end-user facing messages
orphan/unborn: add to the glossary and use them consistently
"git checkout -B <branch> [<start-point>]" allowed a branch that is
in use in another worktree to be updated and checked out, which
might be a bit unexpected. The rule has been tightened, which is a
breaking change. "--ignore-other-worktrees" option is required to
unbreak you, if you are used to the current behaviour that "-B"
overrides the safety.
* jc/checkout-B-branch-in-use:
checkout: forbid "-B <branch>" from touching a branch used elsewhere
checkout: refactor die_if_checked_out() caller
"git checkout -B <branch> [<start-point>]", being a "forced" version
of "-b", switches to the <branch>, after optionally resetting its
tip to the <start-point>, even if the <branch> is in use in another
worktree, which is somewhat unexpected.
Protect the <branch> using the same logic that forbids "git checkout
<branch>" from touching a branch that is in use elsewhere.
This is a breaking change that may deserve backward compatibliity
warning in the Release Notes. The "--ignore-other-worktrees" option
can be used as an escape hatch if the finger memory of existing
users depend on the current behaviour of "-B".

"orphan branch" is not even grammatical ("orphaned branch" is), and
we have been using "unborn branch" to mean the state where the HEAD
points at a branch that does not yet exist.
Update end-user facing messages to correct them. There are cases
other random words are used (e.g., "unparented branch") but now we
have a glossary entry, use the term "unborn branch" consistently.

A message written in olden time prevented a branch from getting
checked out saying it is already checked out elsewhere, but these
days, we treat a branch that is being bisected or rebased just like
a branch that is checked out and protect it. Rephrase the message
to say that the branch is in use.
* rj/branch-in-use-error-message:
branch: error message checking out a branch in use
branch: error message deleting a branch in use
Let's update the error message we show when the user tries to check out
a branch which is being used in another worktree, following the
guideline reasoned in 4970bedef2 (branch: update the message to refuse
touching a branch in-use, 2023-07-21).

Replace all cases of `\s` with ` ` as it is not part of POSIX BRE or ERE
and therefore not all versions of grep handle it.
For the same reason all cases of `\S` are replaced with `[^ ]`. It is
not an exact replacement but it is close enough for this use case.
Also, do not write `\+` in BRE and expect it to mean 1 or more;
it is a GNU extension that may not work everywhere.
Remove `.*` from the end of a pattern that is not right-anchored.

To prepare for the default value of `protocol.file.allow` to change to
"user", ensure tests that rely on local submodules can initialize them
over the file protocol.
Tests that only need to interact with submodules in a limited capacity
have individual Git commands annotated with the appropriate
configuration via `-c`. Tests that interact with submodules a handful of
times use `test_config_global` instead. Test scripts that rely on
submodules throughout use a `git config --global` during a setup test
towards the beginning of the script.

Change those tests that assumed that a .git/info directory would be
created for them when writing .git/info/grafts to explicitly create
the directory.
Do this using the new "TEST_CREATE_REPO_NO_TEMPLATE" facility, and use
"mkdir" instead of "mkdir -p" to assert that we don't have the
.git/info already. An exception to this is the "with grafts" test in
"t6001-rev-list-graft.sh". There we're modifying our ".git" state in a
for-loop, in lieu of refactoring that more extensively let's use
"mkdir -p" there.

Extend the "test_hook" function to take options to disable and remove
hooks. Using the wrapper instead of getting the path and running

behavior with config-based hooks.

either closely related or use the same "$HOOK" pattern let's convert
them too.

When adding a new worktree, it is reasonable to expect that we want to
use the current set of sparse-checkout settings for that new worktree.
This is particularly important for repositories where the worktree would
become too large to be useful. This is even more important when using
partial clone as well, since we want to avoid downloading the missing
blobs for files that should not be written to the new worktree.
The only way to create such a worktree without this intermediate step of
expanding the full worktree is to copy the sparse-checkout patterns and
config settings during 'git worktree add'. Each worktree has its own
sparse-checkout patterns, and the default behavior when the
sparse-checkout file is missing is to include all paths at HEAD. Thus,
we need to have patterns from somewhere, they might as well be the
current worktree's patterns. These are then modified independently in
the future.
In addition to the sparse-checkout file, copy the worktree config file
if worktree config is enabled and the file exists. This will copy over
any important settings to ensure the new worktree behaves the same as
the current one. The only exception we must continue to make is that
core.bare and core.worktree should become unset in the worktree's config
file.

Carefully excluding t2106, which sees independent development elsewhere
at the time of writing, we transition above-mentioned tests to the

$ (cd t &&
sed -i -e 's/master/main/g' -e 's/MASTER/MAIN/g' \

In addition to the manual adjustment to let the `linux-gcc` CI job run
the test suite with `master` and then with `main`, this patch makes sure
that GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME is set in all test scripts
that currently rely on the initial branch name being `master by default.
To determine which test scripts to mark up, the first step was to
force-set the default branch name to `master` in
- all test scripts that contain the keyword `master`,
- t4211, which expects `t/t4211/history.export` with a hard-coded ref to
initialize the default branch,
- t5560 because it sources `t/t556x_common` which uses `master`,
- t8002 and t8012 because both source `t/annotate-tests.sh` which also
uses `master`)
This trick was performed by this command:
$ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/\(test-lib\|lib-\(bash\|cvs\|git-svn\)\|gitweb-lib\)\.sh$/i\
GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\
export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\
' $(git grep -l master t/t[0-9]*.sh) \
t/t4211*.sh t/t5560*.sh t/t8002*.sh t/t8012*.sh
After that, careful, manual inspection revealed that some of the test
scripts containing the needle `master` do not actually rely on a
specific default branch name: either they mention `master` only in a
comment, or they initialize that branch specificially, or they do not
actually refer to the current default branch. Therefore, the
aforementioned modification was undone in those test scripts thusly:
$ git checkout HEAD -- \

We excluded one set of test scripts in these commands, though: the range
of `git p4` tests. The reason? `git p4` stores the (foreign) remote
branch in the branch called `p4/master`, which is obviously not the
default branch. Manual analysis revealed that only five of these tests
actually require a specific default branch name to pass; They were
modified thusly:
$ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/lib-git-p4\.sh$/i\

"git worktree add <path>" performs various checks before approving
<path> as a valid location for the new worktree. Aside from ensuring
that <path> does not already exist, one of the questions it asks is
whether <path> is already a registered worktree. To perform this check,
it queries find_worktree() and disallows the "add" operation if
find_worktree() finds a match for <path>. As a convenience, however,
find_worktree() casts an overly wide net to allow users to identify
worktrees by shorthand in order to keep typing to a minimum. For
instance, it performs suffix matching which, given subtrees "foo/bar"
and "foo/baz", can correctly select the latter when asked only for
"baz".
"add" validation knows the exact path it is interrogating, so this sort
of heuristic-based matching is, at best, questionable for this use-case
and, at worst, may may accidentally interpret <path> as matching an
existing worktree and incorrectly report it as already registered even
when it isn't. (In fact, validate_worktree_add() already contains a
special case to avoid accidentally matching against the main worktree,
precisely due to this problem.)
Avoid the problem of potential accidental matching against an existing
worktree by instead taking advantage of find_worktree_by_path() which
matches paths deterministically, without applying any sort of magic
shorthand matching performed by find_worktree().

write `! test_cmp_rev`. However, since test_cmp_rev() contains
r1=$(git rev-parse --verify "$1") &&
r2=$(git rev-parse --verify "$2") &&
`! test_cmp_rev` will succeed if any of the rev-parses fail. This
behavior is not desired. We want the rev-parses to _always_ be
successful.
Rewrite test_cmp_rev() to optionally accept "!" as the first argument to
do a not-equals comparison. Rewrite `! test_cmp_rev` to `test_cmp_rev !`
in all tests to take advantage of this new functionality.
Also, rewrite the rev-parse logic to end with a `|| return 1` instead of
&&-chaining into the rev-comparison logic. This makes it obvious to
future readers that we explicitly intend on returning early if either of
the rev-parses fail.

The 'git worktree' command used to be just another mode in 'git
checkout', namely 'git checkout --to'. When the tests for the latter
were retrofitted for the former, the test name was adjusted, but the
test number was kept, even though the test is testing a different
command now. t/README states: "Second digit tells the particular
