Change a "git diff-tree" command to be &&-chained so that we won't
ignore its exit code, see the ea05fd5fbf (Merge branch
'ab/keep-git-exit-codes-in-tests', 2022-03-16) topic for prior art.
This fixes code added in b45563a229 (rename: Break filepairs with
different types., 2007-11-30). Due to hiding the exit code we hid a
memory leak under SANITIZE=leak.

The top-level &&-chain checker built into t/test-lib.sh causes tests to
magically exit with code 117 if the &&-chain is broken. However, it has
the shortcoming that the magic does not work within `{...}` groups,
`(...)` subshells, `$(...)` substitutions, or within bodies of compound
statements, such as `if`, `for`, `while`, `case`, etc. `chainlint.sed`
partly fills in the gap by catching broken &&-chains in `(...)`
subshells, but bugs can still lurk behind broken &&-chains in the other
cases.
Fix broken &&-chains in `{...}` groups in order to reduce the number of
possible lurking bugs.

In 459b8d22e5 (tests: do not borrow from COPYING and README from the
real source, 2015-02-15) tests that used "lib-diff.sh" (called
"diff-lib.sh" then) were made to stop relying on the top-level COPYING
file, but we still had other tests that referenced it.
Let's move them over to use the "COPYING_test_data" utility function
introduced in the preceding commit, and in the case of the one test
that needed the "README" file use a ROT 13 version of that "COPYING"
test data. That test added in afd222967c (Extend testing git-mv for
renaming of subdirectories, 2006-07-26) just needs more test data that's not the same as the "COPYING" test data, so a ROT 13 version will do.
This change removes the last references to ../{README,COPYING} in the
test suite.

Starting from a single file, A, if you create B as a copy of A (and
possibly make some edit) and then make extensive change to A, you
will see:
$ git diff -C --name-status
C89 A B
M A
which is expected. However, if you ask the same question in a
different way, you see this:
$ git diff -B -M --name-status
R89 A B
M100 A
telling us that A was rename-edited into B (as if "A will no longer
exist as the result") and at the same time A itself was extensively
edited.
In this case, because the resulting tree still does have file A
(even if it has contents vastly different from the original), we
should use "C"opy, not "R"ename, to avoid hinting that A somehow
goes away.
Two existing tests were depending on the wrong behaviour, and fixed.

In t4023 and t4114, we have to remove the entries using 'git rm' because
otherwise the entries that must turn from symbolic links to regular files
would stay symbolic links in the index. For the same reason, we have to
use 'git mv' instead of plain 'mv' in t3509.

Change the tests that skipped due to unavailable SYMLINKS support to
use the three-arg prereq form of test_expect_success.
Now we get an indication of how many tests that need symlinks are
being skipped on platforms that don't support them.

SKIP messages are now part of the TAP plan. A TAP harness now knows
why a particular test was skipped and can report that information. The
non-TAP harness built into Git's test-lib did nothing special with
these messages, and is unaffected by these changes.

Many tests depend on that symbolic links work. This introduces a check
that sets the prerequisite tag SYMLINKS if the file system supports
symbolic links. Since so many tests have to check for this prerequisite,
we do the check in test-lib.sh, so that we don't need to repeat the test
in many scripts.
To check for 'ln -s' failures, you can use a FAT partition on Linux:
$ mkdosfs -C git-on-fat 1000000
$ sudo mount -o loop,uid=j6t,gid=users,shortname=winnt git-on-fat /mnt
Clone git to /mnt and
$ GIT_SKIP_TESTS='t0001.1[34] t0010 t1301 t403[34] t4129.[47] t5701.7

make test
(These additionally skipped tests depend on POSIX permissions that FAT on
Linux does not provide.)

Many test scripts assumed that they will start in a 'trash' subdirectory
that is a single level down from the t/ directory, and referred to their
test vector files by asking for files like "../t9999/expect". This will
break if we move the 'trash' subdirectory elsewhere.
To solve this, we earlier introduced "$TEST_DIRECTORY" so that they can
refer to t/ directory reliably. This finally makes all the tests use
it to refer to the outside environment.
With this patch, and a one-liner not included here (because it would
contradict with what Dscho really wants to do):

Many scripts compare actual and expected output using
"diff -u". This is nicer than "cmp" because the output shows
how the two differ. However, not all versions of diff
understand -u, leading to unnecessary test failure.
This adds a test_cmp function to the test scripts and
switches all "diff -u" invocations to use it. The function
uses the contents of "$GIT_TEST_CMP" to compare its
arguments; the default is "diff -u".
On systems with a less-capable diff, you can do:
GIT_TEST_CMP=cmp make test

When we consider if a path has been totally rewritten, we did not
touch changes from symlinks to files or vice versa. But a change
that modifies even the type of a blob surely should count as a
complete rewrite.
While we are at it, modernise diffcore-break to be aware of gitlinks (we
do not want to touch them).
