bca900904d Merge branch 'ps/refs-without-the-repository'
The refs API lost functions that implicitly assumes to work on the
primary ref_store by forcing the callers to pass a ref_store as an
argument.

* ps/refs-without-the-repository:
  refs: remove functions without ref store
  cocci: apply rules to rewrite callers of "refs" interfaces
  cocci: introduce rules to transform "refs" to pass ref store
  refs: add `exclude_patterns` parameter to `for_each_fullref_in()`
  refs: introduce missing functions that accept a `struct ref_store`

2e5c4758b7 cocci: apply rules to rewrite callers of "refs" interfaces
Apply the rules that rewrite callers of "refs" interfaces to explicitly
pass `struct ref_store`. The resulting patch has been applied with the
`--whitespace=fix` option.

ae46d5fb98 Merge branch 'js/merge-tree-3-trees'
"git merge-tree" has learned that the three trees involved in the
3-way merge only need to be trees, not necessarily commits.

* js/merge-tree-3-trees:
  fill_tree_descriptor(): mark error message for translation
  cache-tree: avoid an unnecessary check
  Always check `parse_tree*()`'s return value
  t4301: verify that merge-tree fails on missing blob objects
  merge-ort: do check `parse_tree()`'s return value
  merge-tree: fail with a non-zero exit code on missing tree objects
  merge-tree: accept 3 trees as arguments

aa9f618909 Always check parse_tree*()'s return value
Otherwise we may easily run into serious crashes: For example, if we run
`init_tree_desc()` directly after a failed `parse_tree()`, we are
accessing uninitialized data or trying to dereference `NULL`.

Note that the `parse_tree()` function already takes care of showing an
error message. The `parse_tree_indirectly()` and
`repo_get_commit_tree()` functions do not, therefore those latter call
sites need to show a useful error message while the former do not.

5a8ed3fe45 add-patch: classify '@' as a synonym for 'HEAD'
Currently, (restore, checkout, reset) commands correctly take '@' as a
synonym for 'HEAD'. However, in patch mode different prompts/messages
are given on command line due to patch mode machinery not considering
'@' to be a synonym for 'HEAD' due to literal string comparison with
the word 'HEAD', and therefore assigning patch_mode_($command)_nothead
and triggering reverse mode (-R in diff-index). The NEEDSWORK comment
suggested comparing commit objects to get around this. However, doing
so would also take a non-checked out branch pointing to the same commit
as HEAD, as HEAD. This would cause confusion to the user.

Therefore, after parsing '@', replace it with 'HEAD' as reasonably
early as possible. This also solves another problem of disparity
between 'git checkout HEAD' and 'git checkout @' (latter detaches at
the HEAD commit and the former does not).

Trade-offs:
- Some of the errors would show the revision argument as 'HEAD' when
  given '@'. This should be fine, as most users who probably use '@'
  would be aware that it is a shortcut for 'HEAD' and most probably
  used to use 'HEAD'. There is also relevant documentation in
  'gitrevisions' manpage about '@' being the shortcut for 'HEAD'. Also,
  the simplicity of the solution far outweighs this cost.

- Consider '@' as a shortcut for 'HEAD' even if 'refs/heads/@' exists
  at a different commit. Naming a branch '@' is an obvious foot-gun and
  many existing commands already take '@' for 'HEAD' even if
  'refs/heads/@' exists at a different commit or does not exist at all
  (e.g. 'git log @', 'git push origin @' etc.). Therefore this is an
  existing assumption and should not be a problem.

eea0e59ffb treewide: remove unnecessary includes in source files
Each of these were checked with
   gcc -E -I. ${SOURCE_FILE} | grep ${HEADER_FILE}
to ensure that removing the direct inclusion of the header actually
resulted in that header no longer being included at all (i.e. that
no other header pulled it in transitively).

...except for a few cases where we verified that although the header
was brought in transitively, nothing from it was directly used in
that source file. These cases were:
  * builtin/credential-cache.c
  * builtin/pull.c
  * builtin/send-pack.c

"git reset --no-mixed" behaved exactly like "git reset --mixed",
which was nonsense.

If there were only two kinds, e.g. "mixed" vs "separate", it might
have made sense to make "git reset --no-mixed" behave identically to
"git reset --separate" and vice-versa, but because we have many
types of reset, let's just forbid "--no-mixed" and negated form of
other types.

a4e7e317f8 config: add ctx arg to config_fn_t
Add a new "const struct config_context *ctx" arg to config_fn_t to hold
additional information about the config iteration operation.
config_context has a "struct key_value_info kvi" member that holds
metadata about the config source being read (e.g. what kind of config
source it is, the filename, etc). In this series, we're only interested
in .kvi, so we could have just used "struct key_value_info" as an arg,
but config_context makes it possible to add/adjust members in the future
without changing the config_fn_t signature. We could also consider other
ways of organizing the args (e.g. moving the config name and value into
config_context or key_value_info), but in my experiments, the
incremental benefit doesn't justify the added complexity (e.g. a
config_fn_t will sometimes invoke another config_fn_t but with a
different config value).

In subsequent commits, the .kvi member will replace the global "struct
config_reader" in config.c, making config iteration a global-free
operation. It requires much more work for the machinery to provide
meaningful values of .kvi, so for now, merely change the signature and
call sites, pass NULL as a placeholder value, and don't rely on the arg
in any meaningful way.

Most of the changes are performed by
contrib/coccinelle/config_fn_ctx.pending.cocci, which, for every
config_fn_t:

- Modifies the signature to accept "const struct config_context *ctx"
- Passes "ctx" to any inner config_fn_t, if needed
- Adds UNUSED attributes to "ctx", if needed

Most config_fn_t instances are easily identified by seeing if they are
called by the various config functions. Most of the remaining ones are
manually named in the .cocci patch. Manual cleanups are still needed,
but the majority of it is trivial; it's either adjusting config_fn_t
that the .cocci patch didn't catch, or adding forward declarations of
"struct config_context ctx" to make the signatures make sense.

The non-trivial changes are in cases where we are invoking a config_fn_t
outside of config machinery, and we now need to decide what value of
"ctx" to pass. These cases are:

- trace2/tr2_cfg.c:tr2_cfg_set_fl()

  This is indirectly called by git_config_set() so that the trace2
  machinery can notice the new config values and update its settings
  using the tr2 config parsing function, i.e. tr2_cfg_cb().

- builtin/checkout.c:checkout_main()

  This calls git_xmerge_config() as a shorthand for parsing a CLI arg.
  This might be worth refactoring away in the future, since
  git_xmerge_config() can call git_default_config(), which can do much
  more than just parsing.

Handle them by creating a KVI_INIT macro that initializes "struct
key_value_info" to a reasonable default, and use that to construct the
"ctx" arg.

7ce4088ab7 parse-options: consistently allocate memory in fix_filename()
When handling OPT_FILENAME(), we have to stick the "prefix" (if any) in
front of the filename to make up for the fact that Git has chdir()'d to
the top of the repository. We can do this with prefix_filename(), but
there are a few special cases we handle ourselves.

Unfortunately the memory allocation is inconsistent here; if we do make
it to prefix_filename(), we'll allocate a string which the caller must
free to avoid a leak. But if we hit our special cases, we'll return the
string as-is, and a caller which tries to free it will crash. So there's
no way to win.

Let's consistently allocate, so that callers can do the right thing.

There are now three cases to care about in the function (and hence a
three-armed if/else):

  1. we got a NULL input (and should leave it as NULL, though arguably
     this is the sign of a bug; let's keep the status quo for now and we
     can pick at that scab later)

  2. we hit a special case that means we leave the name intact; we
     should duplicate the string. This includes our special "-"
     matching. Prior to this patch, it also included empty prefixes and
     absolute filenames. But we can observe that prefix_filename()
     already handles these, so we don't need to detect them.

  3. everything else goes to prefix_filename()

I've dropped the "const" from the "char **file" parameter to indicate
that we're allocating, though in practice it's not really important.
This is all being shuffled through a void pointer via opt->value before
it hits code which ever looks at the string. And it's even a bit weird,
because we are really taking _in_ a const string and using the same
out-parameter for a non-const string. A better function signature would
be:

  static char *fix_filename(const char *prefix, const char *file);

but that would mean the caller dereferences the double-pointer (and the
NULL check is currently handled inside this function). So I took the
path of least-change here.

Note that we have to fix several callers in this commit, too, or we'll
break the leak-checking tests. These are "new" leaks in the sense that
they are now triggered by the test suite, but these spots have always
been leaky when Git is run in a subdirectory of the repository. I fixed
all of the cases that trigger with GIT_TEST_PASSING_SANITIZE_LEAK. There
may be others in scripts that have other leaks, but we can fix them
later along with those other leaks (and again, you _couldn't_ fix them
before this patch, so this is the necessary first step).

d21878f073 add API: remove run_add_interactive() wrapper function
Now that the Perl "git-add--interactive" has gone away in the
preceding commit we don't need to pass along our desire for a mode as

"stage", 2019-12-21) for its introduction.

As a result of that the run_add_interactive() function would become a

the one callsite that wanted the "NULL" case (interactive_add())

exclude those where we conflict with in-flight changes.

As a result some of them end up using only "the_index", so let's have
them use the more narrow "USE_THE_INDEX_VARIABLE" rather than
"USE_THE_INDEX_COMPATIBILITY_MACROS".

Manual changes not made by coccinelle, that were squashed in:

* Whitespace-wrap argument lists for repo_hold_locked_index(),
  repo_read_index_preload() and repo_refresh_and_write_index(), in cases
  where the line became too long after the transformation.
* Change "refresh_cache()" to "refresh_index()" in a comment in
  "builtin/update-index.c".
* For those whose call was followed by perror("<macro-name>"), change
  it to perror("<function-name>"), referring to the new function.

dc594180d9 cocci & cache.h: apply variable section of "pending" index-compatibility
Mostly apply the part of "index-compatibility.pending.cocci" that
renames the global variables like "active_nr", which are a shorthand
to referencing (in that case) a struct member as "the_index.cache_nr".

In doing so move more of "index-compatibility.pending.cocci" to
"index-compatibility.cocci".

In the case of "active_nr" we'd have a textual conflict with
"ab/various-leak-fixes" in "next"[1]. Let's exclude that specific case
while moving the rule over from "pending".

031b2033e0 cocci & cache.h: apply a selection of "pending" index-compatibility
Apply a selection of rules in "index-compatibility.pending.cocci"
tree-wide, and in doing so migrate them to
"index-compatibility.cocci".

As in preceding commits the only manual changes here are the macro
removals in "cache.h", and the update to the '*.cocci" rules. The rest
of the C code changes are the result of applying those updated rules.

Move rules for some rarely used cache compatibility macros from
"index-compatibility.pending.cocci" to "index-compatibility.cocci" and
apply them.

fbc1ed629e cocci & cache.h: remove rarely used "the_index" compat macros
Since 4aab5b46f4 (Make read-cache.c "the_index" free., 2007-04-01)
we've been undergoing a slow migration away from these macros, but
haven't made much progress since f8adbec9fe (cache.h: flip
NO_THE_INDEX_COMPATIBILITY_MACROS switch, 2019-01-24).

Let's move forward a bit by changing the users of those macros that
are rare enough that we can convert them in one go, and then remove
the compatibility shim.

The only manual change to the C code here is to "cache.h", the rest is
all the result of applying the new "index-compatibility.cocci".

Even though it's a one-off, let's keep the coccinelle rules for
now. We'll extend them in subsequent commits, and this will help
anything that's in-flight or out-of-tree to migrate.

0e47bca0f7 reset: use 'skip_cache_tree_update' option
Enable the 'skip_cache_tree_update' option in the variants that call
'prime_cache_tree()' after 'unpack_trees()' (specifically, 'git reset
--mixed' and 'git reset --hard'). This avoids redundantly rebuilding the
cache tree in both 'cache_tree_update()' at the end of 'unpack_trees()' and
in 'prime_cache_tree()', resulting in a small (but consistent) performance
improvement. From the newly-added 'p7102-reset.sh' test:

b29ad38322 pathspec.h: move pathspec_needs_expanded_index() from reset.c to here
Method pathspec_needs_expanded_index() in reset.c from 4d1cfc1351
(reset: make --mixed sparse-aware, 2021-11-29) is reusable when we
need to verify if the index needs to be expanded when the command
is utilizing a pathspec rather than a literal path.

Move it to pathspec.h for reusability.

Add a few items to the function so it can better serve its purpose as
a standalone public function:

* Add a check in front so if the index is not sparse, return early since
  no expansion is needed.

* It now takes an arbitrary 'struct index_state' pointer instead of
  using `the_index` and `active_cache`.

* Add documentation to the function.

5891c76cd0 reset: show --no-refresh in the short-help
In the short help output from "git reset -h", the recently added
"--[no-]refresh" option is shown like so:

        --refresh skip refreshing the index after reset

which explains what happens when the option is given in the negative
form, i.e. "--no-refresh". We could rephrase the explanation to
read "refresh the index after reset (default)" to hint that the user
can say "--no-refresh" to override the default, but listing the
"--no-refresh" form in the list of options would be more helpful.

7cff6765fe reset: remove 'reset.refresh' config option
Remove the 'reset.refresh' option, requiring that users explicitly specify
'--no-refresh' if they want to skip refreshing the index.

The 'reset.refresh' option was introduced in 101cee42dd (reset: introduce
--[no-]refresh option to --mixed, 2022-03-11) as a replacement for the
refresh-skipping behavior originally controlled by 'reset.quiet'.

Although 'reset.refresh=false' functionally served the same purpose as
'reset.quiet=true', it exposed [1] the fact that the existence of a global
"skip refresh" option could potentially cause problems for users. Allowing a
global config option to avoid refreshing the index forces scripts using 'git
reset --mixed' to defensively use '--refresh' if index refresh is expected;
if that option is missing, behavior of a script could vary from user-to-user
without explanation.

Furthermore, globally disabling index refresh in 'reset --mixed' was
initially devised as a passive performance improvement; since the
introduction of the option, other changes have been made to Git (e.g., the
sparse index) with a greater potential performance impact without
sacrificing index correctness. Therefore, we can more aggressively err on
the side of correctness and limit the cases of skipping index refresh to
only when a user specifies the '--no-refresh' option.

2efc9b84e5 reset: remove 'reset.quiet' config option
Remove the 'reset.quiet' config option, remove '--no-quiet' documentation in
'Documentation/git-reset.txt'. In 4c3abd0551 (reset: add new reset.quiet
config setting, 2018-10-23), 'reset.quiet' was introduced as a way to
globally change the default behavior of 'git reset --mixed' to skip index
refresh.

However, now that '--quiet' does not affect index refresh, 'reset.quiet'
would only serve to globally silence logging. This was not the original
intention of the config setting, and there's no precedent for such a setting
in other commands with a '--quiet' option, so it appears to be obsolete.

In addition to the options & its documentation, remove 'reset.quiet' from
the recommended config for 'scalar'.

45bf76284b reset: do not make '--quiet' disable index refresh
Update '--quiet' to no longer implicitly skip refreshing the index in a
mixed reset. Users now have the ability to explicitly disable refreshing the
index with the '--no-refresh' option, so they no longer need to use
'--quiet' to do so. Moreover, we explicitly remove the refresh-skipping
behavior from '--quiet' because it is completely unrelated to the stated
purpose of the option: "Be quiet, only report errors."

9396251b37 reset: replace '--quiet' with '--no-refresh' in performance advice
Replace references to '--quiet' with '--no-refresh' in the advice on how to
skip refreshing the index. When the advice was introduced, '--quiet' was the
only way to avoid the expensive 'refresh_index(...)' at the end of a mixed
reset. After introducing '--no-refresh', however, '--quiet' became only a
fallback option for determining refresh behavior, overridden by
'--[no-]refresh' or 'reset.refresh' if either is set. To ensure users are
advised to use the most reliable option for avoiding 'refresh_index(...)',
replace recommendation of '--quiet' with '--[no-]refresh'.

fd56fba97f reset: introduce --[no-]refresh option to --mixed
Add a new --[no-]refresh option that is intended to explicitly determine
whether a mixed reset should end in an index refresh.

Starting at 9ac8125d1a (reset: don't compute unstaged changes after reset
when --quiet, 2018-10-23), using the '--quiet' option results in skipping
the call to 'refresh_index(...)' at the end of a mixed reset with the goal
of improving performance. However, by coupling behavior that modifies the
index with the option that silences logs, there is no way for users to have
one without the other (i.e., silenced logs with a refreshed index) without
incurring the overhead of a separate call to 'git update-index --refresh'.
Furthermore, there is minimal user-facing documentation indicating that
--quiet skips the index refresh, potentially leading to unexpected issues
executing commands after 'git reset --quiet' that do not themselves refresh
the index (e.g., internals of 'git stash', 'git read-tree').

To mitigate these issues, '--[no-]refresh' and 'reset.refresh' are
introduced to provide a dedicated mechanism for refreshing the index. When
either is set, '--quiet' and 'reset.quiet' revert to controlling only
whether logs are silenced and do not affect index refresh.

e86ec71d20 reset: revise index refresh advice
Update the advice describing index refresh from "enumerate unstaged changes"
to "refresh the index." Describing 'refresh_index(...)' as "enumerating
unstaged changes" is not fully representative of what an index refresh is
doing; more generally, it updates the properties of index entries that are
affected by outside-of-index state, e.g. CE_UPTODATE, which is affected by
the file contents on-disk. This distinction is relevant to operations that
read the index but do not refresh first - e.g., 'git read-tree' - where a
stale index may cause incorrect behavior.

In addition to changing the advice message, use the "advise" function to
print advice.

244c27242f diff.[ch]: have diff_free() call clear_pathspec(opts.pathspec)
Have the diff_free() function call clear_pathspec(). Since the
diff_flush() function calls this all its callers can be simplified to
rely on it instead.

When I added the diff_free() function in e900d494dc (diff: add an API
for deferred freeing, 2021-02-11) I simply missed this, or wasn't
interested in it. Let's consolidate this now. This means that any
future callers (and I've got revision.c in mind) that embed a "struct
diff_options" can simply call diff_free() instead of needing know that
it has an embedded pathspec.

This does fix a bunch of leaks, but I can't mark any test here as
passing under the SANITIZE=leak testing mode because in
886e1084d7 (builtin/: add UNLEAKs, 2017-10-01) an UNLEAK(rev) was
added, which plasters over the memory
leak. E.g. "t4011-diff-symlink.sh" would report fewer leaks with this
fix, but because of the UNLEAK() reports none.

I'll eventually loop around to removing that UNLEAK(rev) annotation as
I'll fix deeper issues with the revisions API leaking. This is one
small step on the way there, a new freeing function in revisions.c
will want to call this diff_free().
