GetStdHandle(STD_OUTPUT_HANDLE) doesn't work for stderr if stdout is
redirected. Use _get_osfhandle of the FILE* instead.
_isatty() is true for all character devices (including parallel and serial
ports). Check return value of GetConsoleScreenBufferInfo instead to
reliably detect console handles (also don't initialize internal state from
an uninitialized CONSOLE_SCREEN_BUFFER_INFO structure if the function
fails).

Fix const warnings in http-fetch.c and remote-curl.c main() where is
argv declared as const.
The fix should work for all future declarations of main, no matter
whether the second parameter's type is "char**", "const char**", or
"char *[]".

Improve the dirent implementation by removing the relics that were once
necessary to plug into the now unused MinGW runtime, in preparation for
Unicode file name support.
Move FindFirstFile to opendir, and FindClose to closedir, with the
following implications:
- DIR.dd_name is no longer needed
- chdir(one); opendir(relative); chdir(two); readdir() works as expected
(i.e. lists one/relative instead of two/relative)
- DIR.dd_handle is a valid handle for the entire lifetime of the DIR struct
- thus, all checks for dd_handle == INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE and dd_handle == 0
have been removed
- the special case that the directory has been fully read (which was
previously explicitly tracked with dd_handle == INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE &&
dd_stat != 0) is now handled implicitly by the FindNextFile error
handling code (if a client continues to call readdir after receiving
NULL, FindNextFile will continue to fail with ERROR_NO_MORE_FILES, to
the same effect)
- extracting dirent data from WIN32_FIND_DATA is needed in two places, so
moved to its own method
- GetFileAttributes is no longer needed. The same information can be
obtained from the FindFirstFile error code, which is ERROR_DIRECTORY if
the name is NOT a directory (-> ENOTDIR), otherwise we can use
err_win_to_posix (e.g. ERROR_PATH_NOT_FOUND -> ENOENT). The
ERROR_DIRECTORY case could be fixed in err_win_to_posix, but this
probably breaks other functionality.
Removes the ERROR_NO_MORE_FILES check after FindFirstFile (this was
fortunately a NOOP (searching for '*' always finds '.' and '..'),
otherwise the subsequent code would have copied data from an uninitialized
buffer).
Changes malloc to git support function xmalloc, so opendir will die() if
out of memory, rather than failing with ENOMEM and letting git work on
incomplete directory listings (error handling in dir.c is quite sparse).

FILENAME_MAX and MAX_PATH are both 260 on Windows, however, MAX_PATH is
used throughout the other Win32 code in Git, and also defines the length
of file name buffers in the Win32 API (e.g. WIN32_FIND_DATA.cFileName,
from which we're copying the dirent data).

Read-only operations such as "git status" that internally refreshes
the index write out the refreshed index to the disk to optimize
future accesses to the working tree, but this could race with a
"read-write" operation that modify the index while it is running.
Detect such a race and avoid overwriting the index.
Duy raised a good point that we may need to do the same for the
normal writeout codepath, not just the "opportunistic" update
codepath. While that is true, nobody sane would be running two
simultaneous operations that are clearly write-oriented competing
with each other against the same index file. So in that sense that
can be done as a less urgent follow-up for this topic.

Instead of running N pair-wise diff-trees when inspecting a
N-parent merge, find the set of paths that were touched by walking

The changes to make detection of endianness more portable had a bug
that breaks on (at least) Solaris x86.
The bug appears to be a simple copy/paste typo. It checks for
_BIG_ENDIAN and not _LITTLE_ENDIAN for both the case where we would
decide the system is big endian and little endian. Instead, the
second test should be for _LITTLE_ENDIAN and not _BIG_ENDIAN.
Two fixes were possible:
1. Change the negation order of the conditions in the second test.
2. Reverse the order of the conditions in the second test.
Use the second option so that the condition we expect is always a
positive check.

The previous commit swaps the order we check the macros defined by
the compiler and the system headers from the original. Since the
order of check should not matter (i.e. it is insane to define both
__BIG_ENDIAN and friends and BIG_ENDIAN and friends and in a
conflicting way), it is the most conservative thing to do not to
change it.

SwitchToThread() only gives away the rest of the current time slice
to another thread in the current process. So if the thread that feeds
the file decscriptor we're polling is not in the current process, we
get busy-waiting.
I played around with this quite a bit. After trying some more complex
schemes, I found that what worked best is to just sleep 1 millisecond
between iterations. Though it's a very short time, it still completely
eliminates the busy wait condition, without hurting perf.
There code uses SleepEx(1, TRUE) to sleep. See this page for a good
discussion of why that is better than calling SwitchToThread, which
is what was used previously:

Note that calling SleepEx(0, TRUE) does *not* solve the busy wait.
The most striking case was when testing on a UNC share with a large repo,
on a single CPU machine. Without the fix, it took 4 minutes 15 seconds,
and with the fix it took just 1:08! I think it's because git-upload-pack's
busy wait was eating the CPU away from the git process that's doing the
real work. With multi-proc, the timing is not much different, but tons of
CPU time is still wasted, which can be a killer on a server that needs to
do bunch of other things.
I also tested the very fast local case, and didn't see any measurable
difference. On a big repo with 4500 files, the upload-pack took about 2
seconds with and without the fix.

request and Paolo Bonzini has also accepted the same fix to Gnulib

It is a common mistake to call read(2)/pread(2) and forget to
anticipate that they may return error with EAGAIN/EINTR when the
system call is interrupted.
We have xread() helper to relieve callers of read(2) from having to
worry about it; add xpread() helper to do the same for pread(2).
Update the caller in the builtin/index-pack.c and the mmap emulation
in compat/.

Both MSVC and MINGW have alloca(3) definitions in malloc.h, so by moving
win32-compat alloca.h from compat/vcbuild/include/ to compat/win32/ ,
which is included by both MSVC and MINGW CFLAGS, we can make alloca()
work on both those Windows environments.
In MINGW, malloc.h has explicit check for GNUC and if it is so, defines
alloca to __builtin_alloca, so it looks like we don't need to add any
code to here-shipped alloca.h to get optimum performance.
Compile-tested on Windows in MSysGit.

Most gmtime implementations return a NULL value when they
encounter an error (and this behavior is specified by ANSI C
and POSIX). FreeBSD's implementation, however, will simply
leave the "struct tm" untouched. Let's also recognize this
and convert it to a NULL (with this patch, t4212 should pass
on FreeBSD).

Commit d60c49c (read-cache.c: allow unaligned mapping of the
index file, 2012-04-03) introduced helpers to access
unaligned data. However, we already have get_be32, which has
a few advantages:
1. It's already written, so we avoid duplication.
2. It's probably faster, since it does the endian
conversion and the alignment fix at the same time.
3. The get_be32 code is well-tested, having been in
block-sha1 for a long time. By contrast, our custom
helpers were probably almost never used, since the user
needed to manually define a macro to enable them.
We have to add a get_be16 implementation to the existing
get_be32, but that is very simple to do.

The BLK_SHA1 code has optimized wrappers for doing endian
conversions on memory that may not be aligned. Let's pull
them out so that we can use them elsewhere, especially the
time-tested list of platforms that prefer each strategy.

The POSIX standard doesn't currently define a `ntohll`/`htonll`
function pair to perform network-to-host and host-to-network
swaps of 64-bit data. These 64-bit swaps are necessary for the on-disk
storage of EWAH bitmaps if they are not in native byte order.

Correct all hits from
git grep -e '\(&&\|||\)[^ ]' -e '[^ ]\(&&\|||\)' -- '*.c'
i.e. && or || operators that are followed by anything but a SP,
or that follow something other than a SP or a HT, so that these
operators have a SP around it when necessary.
We usually refrain from making this kind of a tree-wide change in
order to avoid unnecessary conflicts with other "real work" patches,
but in this case, the end result does not have a potentially
cumbersome tree-wide impact, while this is a tree-wide cleanup.
Fixes to compat/regex/regcomp.c and xdiff/xemit.c are to replace a
HT immediately after && with a SP.
This is based on Felipe's patch to bultin/symbolic-ref.c; I did all
the finding out what other files in the whole tree need to be fixed
and did the fix and also the log message while reviewing that single
liner, so any screw-ups in this version are mine.

In msvc.h, there's a couple of stat related functions defined diffently
from mingw.h. When we remove these definitions, the only problem we get is
"warning C4005: '_stati64' : macro redefinition" for this line in mingw.h:
#define _stati64(x,y) mingw_stat(x,y)
The reason is that as of MSVCR80.dll (distributed with MSVC 2005), the
original _stati64 family of functions was renamed to _stat32i64, and the
former function names became macros (pointing to the appropriate function
based on the definition of _USE_32BIT_TIME_T).
Defining _stati64 works on MinGW because MinGW by default compiles against
the MSVCRT.DLL that is part of Windows (i.e. _stati64 is a function rather
than a macro).
Note: MinGW *can* compile for newer MSVC runtime versions, and MSVC
apparently can also compile for the Windows MSVCRT.DLL via the DDK (see
http://www.syndicateofideas.com/posts/fighting-the-msvcrt-dll-hell ).
Remove the stat definitions from msvc.h, as they are not compiler related.
In mingw.h, determine the runtime version in use from the definitions of
_stati64 and _USE_32BIT_TIME_T, and define stat() accordingly.
This also fixes that stat() in MSVC builds still resolves to mingw_lstat()
instead of mingw_stat().

Send a large request to read(2)/write(2) as a smaller but still
reasonably large chunks, which would improve the latency when the
operation needs to be killed and incidentally works around broken
64-bit systems that cannot take a 2GB write or read in one go.

When core.precomposeunicode was introduced in 76759c7d,
it was set to false on a unicode decomposing file system like HFS+
to be compatible with older versions of Git.
The Mac OS users need to find out that this configuration exist
and change it manually from false to true.
A smoother workflow can be achieved,
so set core.precomposeunicode to true on a decomposing file system.

This may happen when `git gc --auto` is run automatically, then the
user, to avoid wait time, switches to a new terminal, keeps working
and `git gc --auto` is started again because the first gc instance has
not clean up the repository.
This patch tries to avoid multiple gc running, especially in --auto
mode. In the worst case, gc may be delayed 12 hours if a daemon reuses
the pid stored in gc.pid.
kill(pid, 0) support is added to MinGW port so it should work on
Windows too.

Cygwin port added a "not quite correct but a lot faster and good
enough for many lstat() calls that are only used to see if the
working tree entity matches the index entry" lstat() emulation some
time ago, and it started biting us in places. This removes it and
uses the standard lstat() that comes with Cygwin.
Recent topic that uses lstat on packed-refs file is broken when
this cheating lstat is used, and this is a simplest fix that is
also the cleanest direction to go in the long run.

Not declaring it causes compilation to fail on OS X.

Commit adbc0b6b ("cygwin: Use native Win32 API for stat", 30-09-2008)
added a Win32 specific implementation of the stat functions. In order
to handle absolute paths, cygwin mount points and symbolic links, this
implementation may fall back on the standard cygwin l/stat() functions.
Also, the choice of cygwin or Win32 functions is made lazily (by the
first call(s) to l/stat) based on the state of some config variables.
Unfortunately, this "schizophrenic stat" implementation has been the
source of many problems ever since. For example, see commits 7faee6b8,
79748439, 452993c2, 085479e7, b8a97333, 924aaf3e, 05bab3ea and 0117c2f0.
In order to avoid further problems, such as the issue raised by the new
reference handling API, remove the Win32 l/stat() implementation.

Mac OS X does not like to write(2) more than INT_MAX number of
bytes.
* fc/macos-x-clipped-write:
compate/clipped-write.c: large write(2) fails on Mac OS X/XNU
Due to a bug in the Darwin kernel, write(2) calls have a maximum size
of INT_MAX bytes.
Introduce a new compat function, clipped_write(), that only writes
at most INT_MAX bytes and returns the number of bytes written, as
a substitute for write(2), and allow platforms that need this to
enable it from the build mechanism with NEEDS_CLIPPED_WRITE.
Set it for Mac OS X by default. It may be necessary to include this
function on Windows, too.

Commit 380a4d92 ("Update cygwin.c for new mingw-64 win32 api headers",
11-11-2012) solved an header include order problem on cygwin 1.7 when
using the new mingw-64 WIN32 API headers. The solution involved using
a new build variable (V15_MINGW_HEADERS) to conditionally compile the
cygwin.c source file to use an include order appropriate for the old
and new header files. (The build variable was later renamed in commit
9fca6cff to CYGWIN_V15_WIN32API).
The include order used for cygwin 1.7 includes the "win32.h" header
before "../git-compat-util.h". This order was problematic on cygwin
1.5, since it lead to the WIN32 symbol being defined along with the
inclusion of some WIN32 API headers (e.g. <winsock2.h>) which cause
compilation errors.
The header include order problem on cygwin 1.5 has since been fixed
(see commit "mingw: rename WIN32 cpp macro to GIT_WINDOWS_NATIVE"),
so we can now remove the conditional compilation along with the
associated CYGWIN_V15_WIN32API build variable.

Throughout git, it is assumed that the WIN32 preprocessor symbol is
defined on native Windows setups (mingw and msvc) and not on Cygwin.
On Cygwin, most of the time git can pretend this is just another Unix
machine, and Windows-specific magic is generally counterproductive.
Unfortunately Cygwin *does* define the WIN32 symbol in some headers.
Best to rely on a new git-specific symbol GIT_WINDOWS_NATIVE instead,
defined as follows:

# define GIT_WINDOWS_NATIVE
#endif
After this change, it should be possible to drop the
CYGWIN_V15_WIN32API setting without any negative effect.

Sparse issues 68 errors (two errors for each main() function) such
as the following:

The errors are caused by the 'main' macro used by the MinGW build
to provide a replacement main() function. The original main function
is effectively renamed to 'mingw_main' and is called from the new
main function. The replacement main is used to execute certain actions
common to all git programs on MinGW (e.g. ensure the standard I/O
streams are in binary mode).
In order to suppress the errors, we change the macro to include the
parameters in the declaration of the mingw_main function.
Unfortunately, this change provokes both sparse and gcc to complain
about 9 calls to mingw_main(), such as the following:

In 'pinfo_t' variable, defined on line 795, seems to have been a
mistake (a missing typedef keyword?), so we simply remove it.
The 'pinfo' variable does not require more than file scope, so we
simply add the static modifier to the declaration.
The 'pinfo_cs' variable, in contrast, requires initialisation in the
mingw replacement main() function, so we add an extern declaration to
the compat/mingw.h header file.
The remaining warning is suppressed by replacing the rhs of the
pointer assignment with the NULL pointer literal.

passing the constant '0' as the second parameter in the call to the
WSAEventSelect() function. The function parameter has a pointer type
(WSAEVENT, aka HANDLE, aka void *) so that, in order to suppress the
warning, we simply pass NULL for that parameter in the function call
expression.

initializing an pthread_t structure with an '{ 0 }' initializer.
The first field of the pthread_t structure has type HANDLE (void *),

The gitunsetenv function includes an (redundant) declaration of the
'environ' symbol, which is a pointer to the table of environment
variables. Unfortunately, on MinGW, this provokes sparse to issue
the following warning:

function '__p__environ'
On MinGW, the <stdlib.h> header defines the 'environ' symbol as a
preprocessor macro (via _environ) which obtains the environ table
pointer via a call to the __p__environ() function.
In order to suppress the warning, we simply remove the redundant
declaration of the 'environ' symbol, since the symbol is already
declared correctly in <stdlib.h> (included via git-compat-util.h).

(conditional) declaration of the mremap() function. The declaration
can be enabled by defining the _GNU_SOURCE symbol prior to including

to simply define _GNU_SOURCE just prior to including the <sys/mman.h>
header. (e.g. defining the symbol after including <sys/types.h> will
be completely ineffective.)
In order to suppress the warnings, we define the _GNU_SOURCE symbol
at the start of the malloc.c.h header file.

Sparse issues many "Using plain integer as NULL pointer" warnings
while checking nedmalloc.c (at least 98 such warnings before giving
up due to "too many warnings"). In addition, sparse issues some
"non-ANSI function declaration" type warnings for the symbols
'win32_getcurrentthreadid', 'malloc_stats' and 'malloc_footprint'.
In order to suppress the NULL pointer warnings, rather than replace
all uses of '0' as a null pointer representation with NULL, we add
-Wno-non-pointer-null to SPARSE_FLAGS while checking nedmalloc.c.
In order to suppress the "non-ANSI function declaration" warnings,
we simply include the missing 'empty parameter list' prototype (void)
in the function declarations.

When core.sharedRepository is used, set_shared_perm() in path.c
needs lstat() to return the correct POSIX permissions.
The default for cygwin is core.ignoreCygwinFSTricks = false, which
means that the fast implementation in do_stat() is used instead of
lstat().
lstat() under cygwin uses the Windows security model to implement
POSIX-like permissions. The user, group or everyone bits can be set
individually.
do_stat() simplifes the file permission bits, and may return a wrong
value. The read-only attribute of a file is used to calculate the
permissions, resulting in either rw-r--r-- or r--r--r--
One effect of the simplified do_stat() is that t1301 fails.
Add a function cygwin_get_st_mode_bits() which returns the POSIX
permissions. When not compiling for cygwin, true_mode_bits() in
path.c is used.
Side note:
t1301 passes under cygwin 1.5.
The "user write" bit is synchronized with the "read only" attribute
of a file:
$ chmod 444 x
$ attrib x
A R C:\temp\pt\x
cygwin 1.7 would show
A C:\temp\pt\x

In particular, while linking test-svn-fe.exe, the linker complains
that the external symbol _strtoull is unresolved. A call to this
function was added in commit ddcc8c5b ("vcs-svn: skeleton of an svn
delta parser", 25-12-2010).
The NO_STRTOULL build variable attempts to provide support to old
systems which can't even declare 'unsigned long long' variables,
let alone provide the strtoll() or strtoull() functions. Setting
this build variable does not provide an implementation of these
functions. Rather, it simply allows the compat implementations
of strto{i,u}max() to use strtol() and strtoul() instead.
In order to fix the linker error on systems with NO_STRTOULL set,
currently MSVC and OSF1, we can substitute a call to strtoumax().
However, we can easily provide support for the strtoull() and
strtoll() functions on MSVC, since they are essentially already
available as _strtoui64() and _strtoi64(). This allows us to
remove NO_STRTOULL for MSVC.

Commit 0f77dea9 ("mingw: move poll out of sys-folder", 24-10-2011), along
with other commits in the 'ef/mingw-upload-archive' branch (see commit
7406aa20), effectively reintroduced the same problem addressed by commit
56fb3ddc ("msvc: Fix compilation errors in compat/win32/sys/poll.c",
04-12-2010).
In order to fix the compilation errors, we use the same solution adopted
in that earlier commit. In particular, we set _WIN32_WINNT to 0x0502
(which would target Windows Server 2003) prior to including the winsock2.h
header file.
Also, we delete the compat/vcbuild/include/sys/poll.h header file, since
it is now redundant and it's presence may cause some confusion.

MinGW has a workaround when rmdir unnecessarily fails to retry with
a prompt, but the logic was kicking in when the rmdir failed with
ENOTEMPTY, i.e. was expected to fail and there is no point retrying.
* ef/mingw-rmdir:
mingw_rmdir: do not prompt for retry when non-empty
in ab1a11be ("mingw_rmdir: set errno=ENOTEMPTY when appropriate"),
a check was added to prevent us from retrying to delete a directory
that is both in use and non-empty.
However, this logic was slightly flawed; since we didn't return
immediately, we end up falling out of the retry-loop, but right into
the prompting-loop.
Fix this by setting errno, and guarding the prompting-loop with an
errno-check.

The getpass-implementation we use on Windows isn't at all ideal;
it works in raw-mode (as opposed to cooked mode), and as a result
does not deal correcly with deletion, arrow-keys etc.
Instead, use cooked mode to read a line at the time, allowing the
C run-time to process the input properly.
Since we set files to be opened in binary-mode by default on
Windows, introduce a FORCE_TEXT macro that expands to the "t"
modifier that forces the terminal to be opened in text-mode so we
do not have to deal with CRLF issues.

On Windows, the terminal cannot be opened in read-write mode, so
we need distinct pairs for reading and writing. Since this works
fine on other platforms as well, always open them in pairs.

Make sure SIG_DFL for SIGALRM exits with 128 + SIGALRM so other
processes can diagnose why it exits.

Character class "xdigit" is the only one that hits 6 character limit
defined by CHAR_CLASS_MAX_LENGTH. All other character classes are 5
character long and therefore never caught by this.
This should make xdigit tests in t3070 pass on Windows.

The cygwin project recently switched to a new implementation of the
windows api, now using header files from the mingw-64 project. These
new header files are incompatible with the way cygwin.c included the
old headers: cygwin.c can be compiled using the new or the older (mingw)
headers, but different files must be included in different order for each
to work. The new headers are in use only for the current release series
(based upon the v1.7.x dll version). The previous release series using
the v1.5 dll is kept available but unmaintained for use on older versions
of Windows. So, patch cygwin.c to use the new include ordering only if
the dll version is 1.7 or higher.

Commit b2f5e268 (Windows: Work around an oddity when a pipe with no reader
is written to) introduced a check for EINVAL after fflush() to fight
spurious "Invalid argument" errors on Windows when a pipe was broken. But
this check may hide real errors on systems that do not have the this odd
behavior. Introduce an fflush wrapper in compat/mingw.* so that the treatment
is only applied on Windows.

If poll() is used as a milli-second sleep, like in help.c, by passing a NULL
in the 1st and a 0 in the 2nd arg, it exits with EFAULT.
As per Paolo Bonzini, the original author, this is a bug and to be fixed
Like in this commit, which is not to exit if the 2nd arg is 0. It got fixed
In gnulib in the same manner the other day.

The recent update to terminal I/O interface to get passwords &c
interactively didn't quite work on Solaris.

When a stdio stream is opened in update mode (e.g., "w+"),
the C standard forbids switching between reading or writing
without an intervening positioning function. Many
implementations are lenient about this, but Solaris libc
will flush the recently-read contents to the output buffer.
In this instance, that meant writing the non-echoed password
that the user just typed to the terminal.
Fix it by inserting a no-op fseek between the read and
write.
The opposite direction (writing followed by reading) is also
disallowed, but our intervening fflush is an acceptable
positioning function for that alternative.

Teaches git to normalize pathnames read from readdir(3) and all
arguments from the command line into precomposed UTF-8 (assuming
that they come as decomposed UTF-8) to work around issues on Mac OS.
I think there still are other places that need conversion
(e.g. paths that are read from stdin for some commands), but this
should be a good first step in the right direction.

git on Mac OS and precomposed unicode
Mac OS X mangles file names containing unicode on file systems HFS+,
VFAT or SAMBA. When a file using unicode code points outside ASCII
is created on a HFS+ drive, the file name is converted into
decomposed unicode and written to disk. No conversion is done if
the file name is already decomposed unicode.
Calling open("\xc3\x84", ...) with a precomposed "Ä" yields the same
result as open("\x41\xcc\x88",...) with a decomposed "Ä".
As a consequence, readdir() returns the file names in decomposed
unicode, even if the user expects precomposed unicode. Unlike on
HFS+, Mac OS X stores files on a VFAT drive (e.g. an USB drive) in
precomposed unicode, but readdir() still returns file names in
decomposed unicode. When a git repository is stored on a network
share using SAMBA, file names are send over the wire and written to
disk on the remote system in precomposed unicode, but Mac OS X
readdir() returns decomposed unicode to be compatible with its
behaviour on HFS+ and VFAT.
The unicode decomposition causes many problems:
- The names "git add" and other commands get from the end user may
often be precomposed form (the decomposed form is not easily input
from the keyboard), but when the commands read from the filesystem
to see what it is going to update the index with already is on the
filesystem, readdir() will give decomposed form, which is different.
- Similarly "git log", "git mv" and all other commands that need to
compare pathnames found on the command line (often but not always
precomposed form; a command line input resulting from globbing may
be in decomposed) with pathnames found in the tree objects (should
be precomposed form to be compatible with other systems and for
consistency in general).
- The same for names stored in the index, which should be
precomposed, that may need to be compared with the names read from
readdir().
NFS mounted from Linux is fully transparent and does not suffer from
the above.
As Mac OS X treats precomposed and decomposed file names as equal,
we can
- wrap readdir() on Mac OS X to return the precomposed form, and
- normalize decomposed form given from the command line also to the
precomposed form,
to ensure that all pathnames used in Git are always in the
precomposed form. This behaviour can be requested by setting
"core.precomposedunicode" configuration variable to true.
The code in compat/precomposed_utf8.c implements basically 4 new
functions: precomposed_utf8_opendir(), precomposed_utf8_readdir(),
precomposed_utf8_closedir() and precompose_argv(). The first three
are to wrap opendir(3), readdir(3), and closedir(3) functions.
The argv[] conversion allows to use the TAB filename completion done
by the shell on command line. It tolerates other tools which use
readdir() to feed decomposed file names into git.
When creating a new git repository with "git init" or "git clone",
"core.precomposedunicode" will be set "false".
The user needs to activate this feature manually. She typically
sets core.precomposedunicode to "true" on HFS and VFAT, or file
systems mounted via SAMBA.

When PATH contains an unreadable directory, alias expansion code did not
kick in, and failed with an error that said "git-subcmd" was not found.

The current t9300-fast-import.sh test number 62 ("L: nested tree
copy does not corrupt deltas") was introduced in commit 9a0edb79
("fast-import: add a test for tree delta base corruption",
15-08-2011). A fix for the demonstrated problem was introduced
by commit 8fb3ad76 ("fast-import: prevent producing bad delta",
15-08-2011). However, this fix didn't work on MinGW and so this
test has always failed on MinGW.
Part of the solution in commit 8fb3ad76 was to add an NO_DELTA
preprocessor constant which was defined as follows:

Unfortunately, the S_ISUID constant on MinGW is defined as zero.
In order to fix the problem, we simply alter the definition of

The POSIX standard specifies a return type of int for all six exec
functions. In addition, all exec functions return -1 on error, and
simply do not return on success. However, the current emulation of
the exec functions on mingw are declared with a void return type.
This would cause a problem should any code attempt to call the
exec function in a non-void context. In particular, if an exec
function were used in a conditional it would fail to compile.
In order to improve the fidelity of the emulation, we change the
return type of the mingw_execv[p] functions to int and return -1
on error.

all of the system includes were redundant.
Dropping these system includes also makes git-compat-utils.h the first
include which avoids a compiler warning on Solaris due to the
redefinition of _FILE_OFFSET_BITS.

When we need to prompt the user for input interactively, we
want to access their terminal directly. We can't rely on
stdio because it may be connected to pipes or files, rather
than the terminal. Instead, we use "getpass()", because it
abstracts the idea of prompting and reading from the
terminal. However, it has some problems:
1. It never echoes the typed characters, which makes it OK
for passwords but annoying for other input (like usernames).
2. Some implementations of getpass() have an extremely
small input buffer (e.g., Solaris 8 is reported to
support only 8 characters).
3. Some implementations of getpass() will fall back to
reading from stdin (e.g., glibc). We explicitly don't
want this, because our stdin may be connected to a pipe
speaking a particular protocol, and reading will
disrupt the protocol flow (e.g., the remote-curl
helper).
4. Some implementations of getpass() turn off signals, so
that hitting "^C" on the terminal does not break out of
the password prompt. This can be a mild annoyance.
Instead, let's provide an abstract "git_terminal_prompt"
function that addresses these concerns. This patch includes
an implementation based on /dev/tty, enabled by setting
HAVE_DEV_TTY. The fallback is to use getpass() as before.

If you define SNPRINTF_RETURNS_BOGUS, we use a special
git_vsnprintf wrapper assumes that vsnprintf returns "-1"
instead of the number of characters that you would need to
store the result.
To do this, it invokes vsnprintf multiple times, growing a
heap buffer until we have enough space to hold the result.
However, this means we evaluate the va_list parameter
multiple times, which is generally a bad thing (it may be
modified by calls to vsnprintf, yielding undefined
behavior).
Instead, we must va_copy it and hand the copy to vsnprintf,
so we always have a pristine va_list.

Since systems that omit strtoumax() will likely omit strtomax() too, and
likewise for strtoull() and strtoll(), we arrange for the make variables
NO_STRTOUMAX and NO_STRTOULL to cover both the signed and unsigned
functions, and define compatibility implementations for them.

The POSIX-function fork is not supported on Windows. Use our
start_command API instead.
As this is the last call-site that depends on the fork-stub in
compat/mingw.h, remove that as well.
Add an undocumented flag to git-archive that tells it that the
action originated from a remote, so features can be disabled.
Thanks to Jeff King for work on this part.
Remove the NOT_MINGW-prereq for t5000, as git-archive --remote
now works.

If the Windows sockets subsystem has not been initialized yet then an
attempt to get the hostname returns an error and prints a warning to the
console. This solves this issue for msysGit as seen with 'git fetch'.

strbuf can call die, which again can call syslog from git-daemon.
Endless recursion is no fun; fix it by hand-rolling the logic. As
a side-effect malloc/realloc errors are changed into non-fatal
warnings; this is probably an improvement anyway.

The "x"-prefixed versions of strdup, malloc, etc. will check whether the
allocation was successful and terminate the process otherwise.
A few uses of malloc were left alone since they already implemented a
graceful path of failure or were in a quasi external library like xdiff.
Additionally, the call to malloc in compat/win32/syslog.c was not modified
since the syslog() implemented there is a die handler and a call to the
x-wrappers within a die handler could result in recursion should memory
allocation fail. This will have to be addressed separately.

Earlier 7974843 (compat/cygwin.c: make runtime detection of lstat/stat
lessor impact, 2008-10-23) fixed the low-level "do we use cygwin specific
hacks for stat/lstat?" logic not to call into git_default_config() from
random codepaths that are typically very late in the program, to prevent
the call from potentially overwriting other variables that are initialized
from the configuration.
However, it forgot that on Cygwin, trust-executable-bit should default to
true.
Noticed by J6t, confirmed by Ramsay Jones, and the brown paper bag is on
Gitster's head.

The 'forced modes' test fails on cygwin because the post-update
hook loses it's executable bit when copied from the templates
directory by git-init. The template loses it's executable bit
because the lstat() function resolves to the "native Win32 API"
implementation.
This call to lstat() happens after git-init has set the "git_dir"
(so has_git_dir() returns true), but before the configuration has
been fully initialised. At this point git_config() does not find
any config files to parse and returns 0. Unfortunately, the code
used to determine the cygwin l/stat() function bindings did not
check the return from git_config() and assumed that the config
was complete and accessible once "git_dir" was set.
In order to fix the test, we simply change the binding code to
test the return value from git_config(), to ensure that it actually
had config values to read, before determining the requested binding.

getenv() on Windows looks up environment variables in a case-insensitive
manner. Even though all documentations claim that the environment is
case-insensitive, it is possible for applications to pass an environment
to child processes that has variables that differ only in case. Bash on
Windows does this, for example, and sh-i18n--envsubst depends on this
behavior.
With this patch environment variables are first looked up in a
case-sensitive manner; only if this finds nothing, the system's getenv() is
used as a fallback.

We want to use static lookup_env() in a subsequent change.
At first sight, this change looks innocent. But it is not due to the
#undef getenv. There is one caller of getenv between the old location and
the new location whose behavior could change. But as can be seen from the
defintion of mingw_getenv, the behavior for this caller does not change
substantially.
To ensure consistent behavior in the future, change all getenv callers
in mingw.c to use mingw_getenv.
With this patch, this is not a big deal, yet, but with the subsequent
change, where we teach getenv to do a case-sensitive lookup, the behavior
of all call sites is changed.

real_path currently assumes it's input had '/' as path seperator.
This assumption does not hold true for the code-path from
prefix_path (on Windows), where real_path can be called before
normalize_path_copy.
Fix real_path so it doesn't make this assumption. Create a helper
function to reverse-search for the last path-seperator in a string.

Somebody tried to compile fnmatch.c compatibility file on Interix and got
an error because no header included in the file on that platform defined
NULL. It usually comes from stddef.h and indirectly from other headers
like string.h, unistd.h, stdio.h, stdlib.h, etc., but with the way we
compile this file from our Makefile, inclusion of the header files that
are expected to define NULL in fnmatch.c do not happen because they are
protected with "#ifdef STDC_HEADERS", etc. which we do not pass.
As the least-impact workaround, give a fall-back definition when none of
the headers define NULL.

Even though Windows's socket functions look like their POSIX counter parts,
they do not operate on file descriptors, but on "socket objects". To bring
the functions in line with POSIX, we have proxy functions that wrap and
unwrap the socket objects in file descriptors using open_osfhandle and
get_osfhandle. But shutdown() was not proxied, yet. Fix this.

I found that some doubled words had snuck back into projects from which
I'd already removed them, so now there's a "syntax-check" makefile rule in
gnulib to help prevent recurrence.

va_copy is C99. We have avoided using va_copy many times in the past,
which has led to a bunch of cut-and-paste. From everything I found
searching the web, implementations have historically either provided
va_copy or just let your code assume that simple assignment of worked.
So my guess is that this will be sufficient, though we won't really
know for sure until somebody reports a problem.

On Windows, EACCES overrules ENOTEMPTY when calling rmdir(). But if the
directory is busy, we only want to retry deleting the directory if it
is empty, so test specifically for that case and set ENOTEMPTY rather
than EACCES.

On Windows in case a program is accessing a file unlink or
move operations may fail. To give the user a chance to correct
this we simply wait until the user asks us to retry or fail.
This is useful because of the following use case which seem
to happen rarely but when it does it is a mess:
After making some changes the user realizes that he was on the
incorrect branch. When trying to change the branch some file
is still in use by some other process and git stops in the
middle of changing branches. Now the user has lots of files
with changes mixed with his own. This is especially confusing
on repositories that contain lots of files.
Although the recent implementation of automatic retry makes
this scenario much more unlikely lets provide a fallback as
a last resort.
Thanks to Albert Dvornik for disabling the question if users can't see it.
If the stdout of the command is connected to a terminal but the stderr
has been redirected, the odds are good that the user can't see any
question we print out to stderr. This will result in a "mysterious
hang" while the app is waiting for user input.
It seems better to be conservative, and avoid asking for input
whenever the stderr is not a terminal, just like we do for stdin.

If a file is opened by another process (e.g. indexing of an IDE) for
reading it is not allowed to be deleted. So in case unlink fails retry
after waiting for some time. This extends the workaround from 6ac6f878.

Commit 4091bfc (MinGW: Add missing file mode bit defines,
28-12-2009) causes the msvc build to issue many additional
(currently 1008) macro redefinition warnings. The warnings
relate to the S_IRUSR, S_IWUSR, S_IXUSR and S_IRWXU macros.
In order to fix the warnings, we simply remove the offending
macro definitions which, for both msvc and MinGW, are not
required.

Commit c03c831 (do not depend on signed integer overflow,
05-10-2010) provokes an msvc build failure. The cause of the
failure is a missing definition of the INTMAX_MAX constant,
used in the new maximum_signed_value_of_type(a) macro, which
would normally be defined in the C99 <stdint.h> header file.
In order the fix the compilation error, we add an appropriate
definition of the INTMAX_MAX constant, along with INTMAX_MIN
and UINTMAX_MAX, to an msvc compat header file.

The msvc winsock2.h header file conditionally defines or declares
poll() related symbols which cause many macro redefinition errors,
a struct type redefinition error and syntax errors. These symbols
are defined in support of the WSAPoll() API, new in Windows Vista,
when the symbol _WIN32_WINNT is defined and _WIN32_WINNT >= 0x0600.
In order to avoid the compilation errors, we set _WIN32_WINNT to
0x0502 (which would target Windows Server 2003) prior to including
the winsock2.h header file.

The mingw-runtime implemenation of opendir, readdir and closedir
sets errno to 0 on success, something that POSIX explicitly
forbids. 3ba7a06 ("A loose object is not corrupt if it cannot be
read due to EMFILE") introduce a dependency on this behaviour,
leading to a broken "git clone" on Windows.
compat/mingw.c contains an implementation of readdir, and
compat/msvc.c contains implementations of opendir and closedir.
Move these to compat/win32/dirent.[ch], and change to our own DIR
structure at the same time.
This provides a generic Win32-implementation of opendir, readdir
and closedir which works on both MinGW and MSVC and does not reset
errno, and as a result git clone is working again on Windows.

compat/mingw.c's readdir expects to be the one that starts the search,
and if it isn't, then the first entry will be missing or incorrect.
Fix this by removing the call to _findfirst, and initializing dd_handle
to INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE.
At the same time, make sure we use FindClose instead of _findclose,
which is symmetric to readdir's FindFirstFile. Take into account that
the find-handle might already be closed by readdir.

dd_name by over-allocating. This is not currently done in our
implementation of opendir. Fix this.

The Windows port have so far been using process handles in place
of PID. However, this is not work consistent with what getpid
returns.
PIDs are system-global identifiers, but process handles are local
to a process. Using PIDs instead of process handles allows, for
instance, a user to kill a hung process with the Task Manager,
something that would have been impossible with process handles.
Change the code to use the real PID, and use OpenProcess to get a
process-handle. Store the PID and the process handle in a linked
list protected by a critical section, so we can safely close the
process handle later.

Windows doesn't have inet_pton and inet_ntop, so
add prototypes in git-compat-util.h for them.
At the same time include git-compat-util.h in
the sources for these functions, so they use the
network-wrappers from there on Windows.

Syslog does not usually exist on Windows, so implement our own using
Window's ReportEvent mechanism.
Strings containing "%1" gets expanded into them selves by ReportEvent,
resulting in an unreadable string. "%2" and above is not a problem.
Unfortunately, on Windows an IPv6 address can contain "%1", so expand
"%1" to "% 1" before reporting. "%%1" is also a problem for ReportEvent,
but that string cannot occur in an IPv6 address.

git-daemon requires some socket-functionality that is not yet
supported in the Windows-port. This patch adds said functionality,
and makes sure WSAStartup gets called by socket(), since it is the
first network-call in git-daemon.

As of 2dbc887e, shell.c employs execv(), so provide a MinGW-specific
mingw_execv() override, complementing existing mingw_execvp() and
cousins.
As a bonus, this also resolves a compilation warning due to an
execv() prototype mismatch between Linux and MinGW. Linux expects
the second argument to be (char *const *), whereas MinGW expects
(const char *const *).

fetch_and_setup_pack_index() apparently pass a NULL-pointer to
parse_pack_index(), which in turn pass it to check_packed_git_idx(),
which again pass it to open(). Since open() already sets errno
correctly for the NULL-case, let's just avoid the problematic strcmp.

In msysGit the stat() function has been implemented using mingw_lstat
which sets the st_mode member to S_IFLNK when a symbolic links is found.
This causes the is_executable function to return when git attempts to
build a list of available commands in the help code and we end up missing
most git commands. (msysGit issue #445)
This patch modifies the implementation so that lstat() will return the link
flag but if we are called as stat() we read the size of the target and set
the mode to that of a regular file.

The original version as shown above was fine, but with the ANSIfied
function definition and in the case where internal_function is not empty,
gcc identifies the declaration and definition as different and bails out.
Adding internal_function to the definition doesn't help (it results in
a syntax error); hence, remove it from the subset of declarations that gcc
flags as erroneous.

The MSVC headers typedef errcode as int, and thus confused the compiler in
the K&R style definition. ANSI style deconfuses it.
This patch was originally applied as v1.6.5-rc2~23 but needs to be
re-applied since compat/regex was overwritten by Ævar Arnfjörð
Bjarmason with the gawk regex engine.

We need to define -DGAWK -DNO_MBSUPPORT so that the gawk regex engine
will compile, and include stdio.h and stddef.h in regex.h. Gawk itself
includes these headers before it includes the regex.h header.

Change the regex engine in compat to use the gawk engine from the
gawk-devel module in gawk CVS. This engine supports the REG_STARTEND
flag, which was optionally available in Git since v1.7.2-rc0~77^2~1.
The source was grabbed from cvs.savannah.gnu.org:/sources/gawk, and
these are the upstream versions of the files being included:

Windows does not have strtok_r (and while it does have an identical
strtok_s, but it is not obvious how to use it). Grab an
implementation from glibc.
The svn-fe tool uses strtok_r to parse paths.

Bigger writes to network drives on Windows XP fail. Cap them at 31MB to
allow them to succeed. Callers need to be prepared for write() calls
that do less work than requested anyway.
On local drives, write() calls are translated to WriteFile() calls with
a cap of 64KB on Windows XP and 256KB on Vista. Thus a cap of 31MB won't
affect the number of WriteFile() calls which do the actual work. There's
still room for some other version of Windows to use a chunk size of 1MB
without increasing the number of system calls.

The git_mmap implementation was broken for file sizes that wouldn't fit
into a size_t (32 bits). This was caused by intermediate variables that
were only 32 bits wide when they should be 64 bits.

A caller of start_command can set the member 'dir' to a directory to
request that the child process starts with that directory as CWD. The first
user of this feature was added recently in eee49b6 (Teach diff --submodule
and status to handle .git files in submodules).
On Windows, we have been lazy and had not implemented support for this
feature, yet. This fixes the shortcoming.

The mutex used to protect object access (read_mutex) may need to be
acquired recursively. Introduce init_recursive_mutex() helper function
in thread-utils.c that constructs a mutex with the PHREAD_MUTEX_RECURSIVE
attribute.
pthread_mutex_init() emulation on Win32 is already recursive as it is
implemented on top of the CRITICAL_SECTION type, which is recursive.

Since commit 0fcabdeb52, compat/bswap.h
redefined htonl and ntohl to bswap32 not only if bswap32 has been
defined earlier in compat/bswap.h (which is done only on selected
platforms), but also if bswap32 has been defined anywhere else. This
broke Git at least for NetBSD systems running on big-endian machines
(where ntohl and htonl should, of course, be NOOPs), since NetBSD
defines a bswap32 macro in the system headers.
So, we now undefine any previously defined bswap32 in compat/bswap.h
before defining our own.

Starting with 5256b00 (Use git_mkstemp_mode instead of plain mkstemp to
create object files, 2010-02-22) utime() is invoked on read-only files.
This is not allowed on Windows and results in many warnings of the form
failed utime() on .git/objects/23/tmp_obj_VlgHlc: Permission denied
during a repack. Fix it by making the file temporarily writable.
