9ef23f91fc submodule: don't use submodule_from_name
The function 'submodule_from_name()' is being used incorrectly here as a
submodule path is being used instead of a submodule name.  Since the
correct function to use with a path to a submodule is already being used
('submodule_from_path()') let's remove the call to
'submodule_from_name()'.

2184d4ba0c submodule: merge repo_read_gitmodules and gitmodules_config
Since 69aba5329 (submodule: add repo_read_gitmodules) there have been
two ways to load a repository's .gitmodules file:
'repo_read_gitmodules()' is used if you have a repository object you are
working with or 'gitmodules_config()' if you are implicitly working with
'the_repository'.  Merge the logic of these two functions to remove
duplicate code.

In addition, 'repo_read_gitmodules()' can segfault by passing in a NULL
pointer to 'git_config_from_file()' if a repository doesn't have a
worktree.  Instead check for the existence of a worktree before
attempting to load the .gitmodules file.

f20e7c1ea2 submodule: remove submodule.fetchjobs from submodule-config parsing
The '.gitmodules' file should only contain information pertinent to
configuring individual submodules (name to path mapping, URL where to
obtain the submodule, etc.) while other configuration like the number of
jobs to use when fetching submodules should be a part of the
repository's config.

Remove the 'submodule.fetchjobs' configuration option from the general
submodule-config parsing and instead rely on using the
'config_from_gitmodules()' in order to maintain backwards compatibility
with this config being placed in the '.gitmodules' file.

3ef2538032 recursive submodules: detach HEAD from new state
When a submodule is on a branch and in its superproject you run a
recursive checkout, the branch of the submodule is updated to what the
superproject checks out. This is very unexpected in the current model of
Git as e.g. 'submodule update' always detaches the submodule HEAD.

Despite having plans to have submodule HEADS not detached in the future,
the current behavior is really bad as it doesn't match user expectations
and it is not checking for loss of commits (only to be recovered via the
reflog).

Detach the HEAD unconditionally in the submodule when updating it.

c7be7201a7 submodule--helper: teach push-check to handle HEAD
In 06bf4ad1d (push: propagate remote and refspec with
--recurse-submodules) push was taught how to propagate a refspec down to
submodules when the '--recurse-submodules' flag is given.  The only refspecs
that are allowed to be propagated are ones which name a ref which exists
in both the superproject and the submodule, with the caveat that 'HEAD'
was disallowed.

This patch teaches push-check (the submodule helper which determines if
a refspec can be propagated to a submodule) to permit propagating 'HEAD'
if and only if the superproject and the submodule both have the same
named branch checked out and the submodule is not in a detached head
state.

f3597138df submodule.c: migrate diff output to use emit_diff_symbol
As the submodule process is no longer attached to the same file pointer
'o->file' as the superprojects process, there is a different result in
color.c::check_auto_color. That is why we need to pass coloring explicitly,
such that the submodule coloring decision will be made by the child process
processing the submodule. Only DIFF_SYMBOL_SUBMODULE_PIPETHROUGH contains
color, the other symbols are for embedding the submodule output into the
superprojects output.

Remove the colors from the function signatures, as all the coloring
decisions will be made either inside the child process or the final
emit_diff_symbol, but not in the functions driving the submodule diff.

a6d7eb2c7a pull: optionally rebase submodules (remote submodule changes only)
Teach pull to optionally update submodules when '--recurse-submodules'
is provided.  This will teach pull to run 'submodule update --rebase'
when the '--recurse-submodules' and '--rebase' flags are given under
specific circumstances.

On a rebase workflow:
=====================

1. Both sides change the submodule
 ------------------------------
Let's assume the following history in a submodule:

  H---I---J---K---L local branch
       \
        M---N---O---P remote branch

and the following in the superproject (recorded submodule in parens):

  A(H)---B(I)---F(K)---G(L)  local branch
          \
           C(N)---D(N)---E(P) remote branch

In an ideal world this would rebase the submodule and rewrite
the submodule pointers that the superproject points at such that
the superproject looks like

  A(H)---B(I)              F(K')---G(L')  rebased branch
           \                /
           C(N)---D(N)---E(P) remote branch

and the submodule as:

        J---K---L (old dangeling tip)
       /
  H---I               J'---K'---L' rebased branch
       \             /
        M---N---O---P remote branch

And if a conflict arises in the submodule the superproject rebase
would stop at that commit at which the submodule conflict occurs.

Currently a "pull --rebase" in the superproject produces
a merge conflict as the submodule pointer changes are
conflicting and cannot be resolved.

2. Local submodule changes only
 -----------------------
Assuming histories as above, except that the remote branch
would not contain submodule changes, then a result as

  A(H)---B(I)               F(K)---G(L)  rebased branch
           \                /
           C(I)---D(I)---E(I) remote branch

is desire-able. This is what currently happens in rebase.

If the recursive flag is given, the ideal git would
produce a superproject as:

  A(H)---B(I)              F(K')---G(L')  rebased branch (incl. sub rebase!)
           \                /
           C(I)---D(I)---E(I) remote branch

and the submodule as:

        J---K---L (old dangeling tip)
       /
  H---I               J'---K'---L' locally rebased branch
       \             /
        M---N---O---P advanced branch

This patch doesn't address this issue, however
a test is added that this fails up front.

3. Remote submodule changes only
 ----------------------
Assuming histories as in (1) except that the local superproject branch
would not have touched the submodule the rebase already works out in the
superproject with no conflicts:

  A(H)---B(I)               F(P)---G(P)  rebased branch (no sub changes)
           \                 /
           C(N)---D(N)---E(P) remote branch

The recurse flag as presented in this patch would additionally
update the submodule as:

  H---I              J'---K'---L' rebased branch
       \            /
        M---N---O---P remote branch

As neither J, K, L nor J', K', L' are referred to from the superproject,
no rewriting of the superproject commits is required.

Conclusion for 'pull --rebase --recursive'
 -----------------------------------------
If there are no local superproject changes it is sufficient to call
"submodule update --rebase" as this produces the desired results. In case
of conflicts, the behavior is the same as in 'submodule update --recursive'
which is assumed to be sane.

This patch implements (3) only.

On a merge workflow:
====================

We'll start off with the same underlying DAG as in (1) in the rebase
workflow. So in an ideal world a 'pull --merge --recursive' would
produce this:

  H---I---J---K---L----X
       \              /
        M---N---O---P

with X as the new merge-commit in the submodule and the superproject
as:

  A(H)---B(I)---F(K)---G(L)---Y(X)
          \                  /
           C(N)---D(N)---E(P)

However modifying the submodules on the fly is not supported in git-merge
such that Y(X) is not easy to produce in a single patch. In fact git-merge
doesn't know about submodules at all.

However when at least one side does not contain commits touching the
submodule at all, then we do not need to perform the merge for the
submodule but a fast-forward can be done via checking out either L or P
in the submodule.  This strategy is implemented in 68d03e4a6e (Implement
automatic fast-forward merge for submodules, 2010-07-07) already, so
to align with the rebase behavior we need to also update the worktree
of the submodule.

046b48239e Introduce 'submodule.recurse' option for worktree manipulators
Any command that understands '--recurse-submodules' can have its
default changed to true, by setting the new 'submodule.recurse'
option.

This patch includes read-tree/checkout/reset for working tree
manipulating commands. Later patches will cover other commands.

1d789d0892 submodule loading: separate code path for .gitmodules and config overlay
The .gitmodules file is not supposed to have all the options available,
that are available in the configuration so separate it out.

A configuration option such as the hypothetical submodule.color.diff
that determines in which color a submodule change is printed,
is a very user specific thing, that the .gitmodules file should
not tamper with.

The .gitmodules file should only be used for settings that required
to setup the project in which the .gitmodules file is tracked. As the
minimum this would only include the name<->path mapping of the
submodule and its URL and branch.

Any further setting (such as 'fetch.recursesubmodules' or
'submodule.<name>.{update, ignore, shallow}') is not specific
to the project setup requirements, but rather is a distribution
of suggested developer configurations.  In other areas of Git
a suggested developer configuration is not transported in-tree
but via other means.  In an organisation this could be done
by deploying an opinionated system wide config (/etc/gitconfig)
or by putting the settings in the users home directory when
they start at the organisation. In open source projects this
is often accomplished via extensive READMEs (cf. our
SubmittingPatches/CodingGuidlines).

As a later patch in this series wants to introduce
a generic submodule recursion option, we want to make
sure that switch is not exposed via the gitmodules file.

d7a3803f9e reset/checkout/read-tree: unify config callback for submodule recursion
The callback function is essentially duplicated 3 times. Remove all
of them and offer a new callback function, that lives in submodule.c

By putting the callback function there, we no longer need the function
'set_config_update_recurse_submodules', nor duplicate the global variable
in each builtin as well as submodule.c

In the three builtins we have different 2 ways how to load the .gitmodules
and config file, which are slightly different. git-checkout has to load
the submodule config all the time due to 23b4c7bcc5 (checkout: Use
submodule.*.ignore settings from .git/config and .gitmodules, 2010-08-28)

git-reset and git-read-tree do not respect these diff settings, so loading
the submodule configuration is optional. Also put that into submodule.c
for code deduplication.

c08397e3aa pathspec: remove PATHSPEC_STRIP_SUBMODULE_SLASH_EXPENSIVE flag
Since (ae8d08242 pathspec: pass directory indicator to
match_pathspec_item()) the path matching logic has been able to cope
with submodules without needing to strip off a trailing slash if a path
refers to a submodule.

Since the stripping the trailing slash is no longer necessary, remove
the PATHSPEC_STRIP_SUBMODULE_SLASH_EXPENSIVE flag.  In addition, factor
out the logic which dies if a path decends into a submodule so that it
can still be used as a check after a pathspec struct has been
initialized.

bdab972153 submodule: add die_in_unpopulated_submodule function
Currently 'git add' is the only command which dies when launched from an
unpopulated submodule (the place-holder directory for a submodule which
hasn't been checked out).  This is triggered implicitly by passing the
PATHSPEC_STRIP_SUBMODULE_SLASH_EXPENSIVE flag to 'parse_pathspec()'.

Instead make this desire more explicit by creating a function
'die_in_unpopulated_submodule()' which dies if the provided 'prefix' has
a leading path component which matches a submodule in the the index.

bc83266abe Convert lookup_commit* to struct object_id
Convert lookup_commit, lookup_commit_or_die,
lookup_commit_reference, and lookup_commit_reference_gently to take
struct object_id arguments.

Introduce a temporary in parse_object buffer in order to convert this
function.  This is required since in order to convert parse_object and
parse_object_buffer, lookup_commit_reference_gently and
lookup_commit_or_die would need to be converted.  Not introducing a
temporary would therefore require that lookup_commit_or_die take a

leaving a confusing and hard-to-use interface.

parse_object_buffer will lose this temporary in a later patch.

218c883783 submodule: properly recurse for read-tree and checkout
We forgot to prepare the submodule env, which is only a problem for
nested submodules. See 2e5d6503bd (ls-files: fix recurse-submodules
with nested submodules, 2017-04-13) for further explanation.

To come up with a proper test for this, we'd need to look at nested
submodules just as in that given commit. It turns out we're lucky
and these tests already exist, but are marked as failing. We need
to pass `--recurse-submodules` to read-tree additionally to make
these tests pass. Passing that flag alone would not make the tests
pass, such that this covers testing for the bug fix of the submodule
env as well.

aacc5c1a81 submodule: refactor logic to determine changed submodules
There are currently two instances (fetch and push) where we want to
determine if submodules have changed given some revision specification.
These two instances don't use the same logic to generate a list of
changed submodules and as a result there is a fair amount of code
duplication.

This patch refactors these two code paths such that they both use the
same logic to generate a list of changed submodules.  This also makes it
easier for future callers to be able to reuse this logic as they only
need to create an argv_array with the revision specification to be using
during the revision walk.

f2d48994dc submodule.c: submodule_move_head works with broken submodules
Early on in submodule_move_head just after the check if the submodule is
initialized, we need to check if the submodule is populated correctly.

If the submodule is initialized but doesn't look like it is populated,
this is a red flag and can indicate multiple sorts of failures:
(1) The submodule may be recorded at an object name, that is missing.
(2) The submodule '.git' file link may be broken and it is not pointing
    at a repository.

In both cases we want to complain to the user in the non-forced mode,
and in the forced mode ignoring the old state and just moving the
submodule into its new state with a fixed '.git' file link.

823bab09c6 submodule.c: uninitialized submodules are ignored in recursive commands
This was an oversight when working on the working tree modifying commands
recursing into submodules.

To test for uninitialized submodules, introduce another submodule
"uninitialized_sub". Adding it via `submodule add` will activate the
submodule in the preparation area (in create_lib_submodule_repo we
setup all the things in submodule_update_repo), but the later tests
will use a new testing repo that clones the preparation repo
in which the new submodule is not initialized.

By adding it to the branch "add_sub1", which is the starting point of
all other branches, we have wide coverage.

Teach "push --recurse-submodules" to propagate, if given a name as remote, the
provided remote and refspec recursively to the pushes performed in the
submodules. The push will therefore only succeed if all submodules have a
remote with such a name configured.

Note that "push --recurse-submodules" with a path or URL as remote will not
propagate the remote or refspec and instead use the default remote and refspec
configured in the submodule, preserving the current behavior.

17b254cda6 diff: submodule inline diff to initialize env array.
David reported:
> When I try to run `git diff --submodule=diff` in a submodule which has

This happens, because we do not properly initialize the environment
in which the diff is run in the submodule. That means we inherit the
environment from the main process, which sets environment variables.
(Apparently we do set environment variables which we do not set
when not in a submodules, i.e. the .git directory is linked)

This commit, just like fd47ae6a5b (diff: teach diff to display
submodule difference with an inline diff, 2016-08-31) introduces bad
test code (i.e. hard coded hash values), which will be cleanup up in
a later patch.

1a168e5c86 convert unchecked snprintf into xsnprintf
These calls to snprintf should always succeed, because their
input is small and fixed. Let's use xsnprintf to make sure
this is the case (and to make auditing for actual truncation
easier).

These could be candidates for turning into heap buffers, but
they fall into a few broad categories that make it not worth
doing:

  - formatting single numbers is simple enough that we can
    see the result should fit

  - the size of a sha1 is likewise well-known, and I didn't
    want to cause unnecessary conflicts with the ongoing
    process to convert these constants to GIT_MAX_HEXSZ

  - the interface for curl_errorstr is dictated by curl

40069d6e3a submodule.c: correctly handle nested submodules in is_submodule_modified
Suppose I have a superproject 'super', with two submodules 'super/sub'
and 'super/sub1'. 'super/sub' itself contains a submodule
'super/sub/subsub'. Now suppose I run, from within 'super':

    echo hi >sub/subsub/stray-file
    echo hi >sub1/stray-file

Currently we get would see the following output in git-status:

    git status --short
     m sub
     ? sub1

With this patch applied, the untracked file in the nested submodule is
displayed as an untracked file on the 'super' level as well.

    git status --short
     ? sub
     ? sub1

This doesn't change the output of 'git status --porcelain=1' for nested
submodules, because its output is always ' M' for either untracked files
or local modifications no matter the nesting level of the submodule.

'git status --porcelain=2' is affected by this change in a nested
submodule, though. Without this patch it would report the direct submodule
as modified and having no untracked files. With this patch it would report
untracked files. Chalk this up as a bug fix.

This bug fix also affects the default output (non-short, non-porcelain)
of git-status, which is not tested here.

fcecf0b968 submodule.c: port is_submodule_modified to use porcelain 2
Migrate 'is_submodule_modified' to the new porcelain format of
git-status. This conversion attempts to convert faithfully, i.e.
the behavior ought to be exactly the same.

As the output in the parsing only distinguishes between untracked files
and the rest, this is easy to port to the new format, as we only
need to identify untracked files and the rest is handled in the "else"
case.

untracked files are indicated by only a single question mark instead of
two question marks, so the conversion is easy.

af6865a7f1 submodule.c: convert is_submodule_modified to use strbuf_getwholeline
Instead of implementing line reading yet again, make use of our beautiful
library function to read one line.  By using strbuf_getwholeline instead
of strbuf_read, we avoid having to allocate memory for the entire child
process output at once.  That is, we limit maximum memory usage.
Also we can start processing the output as it comes in, no need to
wait for all of it.

Once we know all information that we care about, we can terminate
the child early. In that case we do not care about its exit code as well.
By just closing our side of the pipe the child process will get a SIGPIPE
signal, which it will not report nor do we report it in finish_command,
ac78663b0d (run-command: don't warn on SIGPIPE deaths, 2015-12-29).

a086f921a7 submodule: decouple url and submodule interest
Currently the submodule.<name>.url config option is used to determine if
a given submodule is of interest to the user.  This ends up being
cumbersome in a world where we want to have different submodules checked
out in different worktrees or a more generalized mechanism to select
which submodules are of interest.

In a future with worktree support for submodules, there will be multiple
working trees, each of which may only need a subset of the submodules
checked out.  The URL (which is where the submodule repository can be
obtained) should not differ between different working trees.

It may also be convenient for users to more easily specify groups of
submodules they are interested in as opposed to running "git submodule
init <path>" on each submodule they want checked out in their working
tree.

To this end two config options are introduced, submodule.active and
submodule.<name>.active.  The submodule.active config holds a pathspec
that specifies which submodules should exist in the working tree.  The
submodule.<name>.active config is a boolean flag used to indicate if
that particular submodule should exist in the working tree.

Its important to note that submodule.active functions differently than
the other configuration options since it takes a pathspec.  This allows
users to adopt at least two new workflows:

  1. Submodules can be grouped with a leading directory, such that a
     pathspec e.g. 'lib/' would cover all library-ish modules to allow
     those who are interested in library-ish modules to set
     "submodule.active = lib/" just once to say any and all modules in
     'lib/' are interesting.

  2. Once the pathspec-attribute feature is invented, users can label
     submodules with attributes to group them, so that a broad pathspec
     with attribute requirements, e.g. ':(attr:lib)', can be used to say
     any and all modules with the 'lib' attribute are interesting.
     Since the .gitattributes file, just like the .gitmodules file, is
     tracked by the superproject, when a submodule moves in the
     superproject tree, the project can adjust which path gets the
     attribute in .gitattributes, just like it can adjust which path has
     the submodule in .gitmodules.

Neither of these two additional configuration options solve the problem
of wanting different submodules checked out in different worktrees
because multiple worktrees share .git/config.  Only once per-worktree
configurations become a reality can this be solved, but this is a
necessary preparatory step for that future.

Given these multiple ways to check if a submodule is of interest, the
more fine-grained submodule.<name>.active option has the highest order
of precedence followed by the pathspec check against submodule.active.
To ensure backwards compatibility, if neither of these options are set,
git falls back to checking the submodule.<name>.url option to determine
if a submodule is interesting.

In later patches we introduce the --recurse-submodule flag for commands
that modify the working directory, e.g. git-checkout.

It is potentially expensive to check if a submodule needs an update,
because a common theme to interact with submodules is to spawn a child
process for each interaction.

So let's introduce a function that checks if a submodule needs
to be checked for an update before attempting the update.

365444a6a5 connect_work_tree_and_git_dir: safely create leading directories
In a later patch we'll use connect_work_tree_and_git_dir when the
directory for the gitlink file doesn't exist yet. This patch makes
connect_work_tree_and_git_dir safe to use for both cases of
either the git dir or the working dir missing.

To do so, we need to call safe_create_leading_directories[_const]
on both directories. However this has to happen before we construct
the absolute paths as real_pathdup assumes the directories to
be there already.

So for both the config file in the git dir as well as the .git link
file we need to
a) construct the name
b) call SCLD
c) get the absolute path
d) once a-c is done for both we can consume the absolute path
   to compute the relative path to each other and store those
   relative paths.

The implementation provided here puts a) and b) for both cases first,
and then performs c and d after.

One of the two users of 'connect_work_tree_and_git_dir' already checked
for the directory being there, so we can loose that check as
connect_work_tree_and_git_dir handles this functionality now.

ce83eadd9a real_pathdup(): fix callsites that wanted it to die on error
In 4ac9006f83 (real_path: have callers use real_pathdup and
strbuf_realpath, 2016-12-12), we changed the xstrdup(real_path())
pattern to use real_pathdup() directly.

The problem with this change is that real_path() calls
strbuf_realpath() with die_on_error = 1 while real_pathdup() calls
it with die_on_error = 0. Meaning that in cases where real_path()
causes Git to die() with an error message, real_pathdup() is silent
and returns NULL instead.

The callers, however, are ill-prepared for that change, as they expect
the return value to be non-NULL (and otherwise the function died
with an appropriate error message).

Fix this by extending real_pathdup()'s signature to accept the
die_on_error flag and simply pass it through to strbuf_realpath(),
and then adjust all callers after a careful audit whether they would
handle NULLs well.

ec9629b3b9 submodule absorbing: fix worktree/gitdir pointers recursively for non-moves
Consider having a submodule 'sub' and a nested submodule at 'sub/nested'.
When nested is already absorbed into sub, but sub is not absorbed into
its superproject, then we need to fixup the gitfile and core.worktree
setting for 'nested' when absorbing 'sub', but we do not need to move
its git dir around.

Previously 'nested's gitfile contained "gitdir: ../.git/modules/nested";
it has to be corrected to "gitdir: ../../.git/modules/sub1/modules/nested".

An alternative I considered to do this work lazily, i.e. when resolving
"../.git/modules/nested", we would notice the ".git" being a gitfile
linking to another path.  That seemed to be robuster by design, but harder
to get the implementation right.  Maybe we have to do that anyway once we
try to have submodules and worktrees working nicely together, but for now
just produce 'correct' (i.e. direct) pointers.

83b7696605 submodule: rename and add flags to ok_to_remove_submodule
In different contexts the question "Is it ok to delete a submodule?"
may be answered differently.

In 293ab15eea (submodule: teach rm to remove submodules unless they
contain a git directory, 2012-09-26) a case was made that we can safely
ignore ignored untracked files for removal as we explicitely ask for the
removal of the submodule.

In a later patch we want to remove submodules even when the user doesn't
explicitly ask for it (e.g. checking out a tree-ish in which the submodule
doesn't exist).  In that case we want to be more careful when it comes
to deletion of untracked files. As of this patch it is unclear how this
will be implemented exactly, so we'll offer flags in which the caller
can specify how the different untracked files ought to be handled.

As the flags allow the function to not die on an error when spawning
a child process, we need to find an appropriate return code for the
case when the child process could not be started. As in that case we
cannot tell if the submodule is ok to remove, we'd want to return 'false'.

As only 0 is understood as false, rename the function to invert the
meaning, i.e. the return code of 0 signals the removal of the submodule
is fine, and other values can be used to return a more precise answer
what went wrong.

f6f8586140 submodule: add absorb-git-dir function
When a submodule has its git dir inside the working dir, the submodule
support for checkout that we plan to add in a later patch will fail.

Add functionality to migrate the git directory to be absorbed
into the superprojects git directory.

The newly added code in this patch is structured such that other areas of
Git can also make use of it. The code in the submodule--helper is a mere
wrapper and option parser for the function
`absorb_git_dir_into_superproject`, that takes care of embedding the
submodules git directory into the superprojects git dir. That function
makes use of the more abstract function for this use case
`relocate_gitdir`, which can be used by e.g. the worktree code eventually
to move around a git directory.

The current caller of connect_work_tree_and_git_dir passes
an absolute path for the `git_dir` parameter. In the future patch
we will also pass in relative path for `git_dir`. Extend the functionality
of connect_work_tree_and_git_dir to take relative paths for parameters.

We could work around this in the future patch by computing the absolute
path for the git_dir in the calling site, however accepting relative
paths for either parameter makes the API for this function much harder
to misuse.

Teach push to respect the --dry-run option when configured to
recursively push submodules 'on-demand'.  This is done by passing the
--dry-run flag to the child process which performs a push for a
submodules when performing a dry-run.

In order to preserve good user experience, the additional check for
unpushed submodules is skipped during a dry-run when
--recurse-submodules=on-demand.  The check is skipped because the submodule
pushes were performed as dry-runs and this check would always fail as the
submodules would still need to be pushed.

changed submodules. Lets collect them first and then execute the
possibly expensive test whether certain revisions are already pushed
only once per submodule.

The submodule code wants to temporarily add an alternate

manually. Let's provide a helper so it can reuse the code in
link_alt_odb_entry().

While we're adding our new add_to_alternates_memory(), let's
document add_to_alternates_file(), as the two are related.

16ddcd403b sha1_array: let callbacks interrupt iteration
The callbacks for iterating a sha1_array must have a void
return.  This is unlike our usual for_each semantics, where
a callback may interrupt iteration and have its value
propagated. Let's switch it to the usual form, which will
enable its use in more places (e.g., where we are replacing
an existing iteration with a different data structure).

The function is used to set up the environment variable used in a
subprocess we spawn in a submodule directory.  The callers set up a
child_process structure, find the working tree path of one submodule
and set .dir field to it, and then use start_command() API to spawn
the subprocess like "status", "fetch", etc.

When this happens, we expect that the ".git" (either a directory or
a gitfile that points at the real location) in the current working
directory of the subprocess MUST be the repository for the submodule.

If this ".git" thing is a corrupt repository, however, because
prepare_submodule_repo_env() unsets GIT_DIR and GIT_WORK_TREE, the
subprocess will see ".git", thinks it is not a repository, and
attempt to find one by going up, likely to end up in finding the
repository of the superproject.  In some codepaths, this will cause
a command run with the "--recurse-submodules" option to recurse
forever.

By exporting GIT_DIR=.git, disable the auto-discovery logic in the
subprocess, which would instead stop it and report an error.

The test illustrates existing problems in a few callsites of this
function.  Without this fix, "git fetch --recurse-submodules", "git
status" and "git diff" keep recursing forever.

8e6df65015 submodule: refactor show_submodule_summary with helper function
A future patch is going to add a new submodule diff format which
displays an inline diff of the submodule changes. To make this easier,
and to ensure that both submodule diff formats use the same initial
header, factor out show_submodule_header() function which will print the
current submodule header line, and then leave the show_submodule_summary
function to lookup and print the submodule log format.

This does create one format change in that "(revision walker failed)"
will now be displayed on its own line rather than as part of the message
because we no longer perform this step directly in the header display
flow. However, this is a rare case as most causes of the failure will be
due to a missing commit which we already check for and avoid previously.

99b43a61f2 allow do_submodule_path to work even if submodule isn't checked out
Currently, do_submodule_path will attempt locating the .git directory by
using read_gitfile on <path>/.git. If this fails it just assumes the
<path>/.git is actually a git directory.

This is good because it allows for handling submodules which were cloned
in a regular manner first before being added to the superproject.

Unfortunately this fails if the <path> is not actually checked out any
longer, such as by removing the directory.

Fix this by checking if the directory we found is actually a gitdir. In
the case it is not, attempt to lookup the submodule configuration and
find the name of where it is stored in the .git/modules/ directory of
the superproject.

If we can't locate the submodule configuration, this might occur because
for example a submodule gitlink was added but the corresponding
.gitmodules file was not properly updated.  A die() here would not be
pleasant to the users of submodule diff formats, so instead, modify
do_submodule_path() to return an error code:

 - git_pathdup_submodule() returns NULL when we fail to find a path.
 - strbuf_git_path_submodule() propagates the error code to the caller.

Modify the callers of these functions to check the error code and fail
properly. This ensures we don't attempt to use a bad path that doesn't
match the corresponding submodule.

Because this change fixes add_submodule_odb() to work even if the
submodule is not checked out, update the wording of the submodule log
diff format to correctly display that the submodule is "not initialized"
instead of "not checked out"

Add tests to ensure this change works as expected.

2721ce21e4 use string_list initializer consistently
There are two types of string_lists: those that own the
string memory, and those that don't. You can tell the
difference by the strdup_strings flag, and one should use
either STRING_LIST_INIT_DUP, or STRING_LIST_INIT_NODUP as an
initializer.

Historically, the normal all-zeros initialization has
corresponded to the NODUP case. Many sites use no
initializer at all, and that works as a shorthand for that
case. But for a reader of the code, it can be hard to
remember which is which. Let's be more explicit and actually
have each site declare which type it means to use.

This is a fairly mechanical conversion; I assumed each site
was correct as-is, and just switched them all to NODUP.

89044baa8b submodule: stop sanitizing config options
The point of having a whitelist of command-line config
options to pass to submodules was two-fold:

  1. It prevented obvious nonsense like using core.worktree
     for multiple repos.

  2. It could prevent surprise when the user did not mean
     for the options to leak to the submodules (e.g.,
     http.sslverify=false).

For case 1, the answer is mostly "if it hurts, don't do
that". For case 2, we can note that any such example has a
matching inverted surprise (e.g., a user who meant
http.sslverify=true to apply everywhere, but it didn't).

So this whitelist is probably not giving us any benefit, and
is already creating a hassle as people propose things to put
on it. Let's just drop it entirely.

Note that we still need to keep a special code path for
"prepare the submodule environment", because we still have
to take care to pass through $GIT_CONFIG_PARAMETERS (and
block the rest of the repo-specific environment variables).

We can do this easily from within the submodule shell
script, which lets us drop the submodule--helper option
entirely (and it's OK to do so because as a "--" program, it
is entirely a private implementation detail).

c12e865670 submodule: use prepare_submodule_repo_env consistently
Before 14111fc (git: submodule honor -c credential.* from
command line, 2016-02-29), it was sufficient for code which
spawned a process in a submodule to just set the child
process's "env" field to "local_repo_env" to clear the
environment of any repo-specific variables.

That commit introduced a more complicated procedure, in
which we clear most variables but allow through sanitized
config. For C code, we used that procedure only for cloning,
but not for any of the programs spawned by submodule.c. As a
result, things like "git fetch --recurse-submodules" behave
differently than "git clone --recursive"; the former will
not pass through the sanitized config.

We can fix this by using prepare_submodule_repo_env()
everywhere in submodule.c.

3604242f08 submodule: port init from shell to C
By having the `submodule init` functionality in C, we can reference it
easier from other parts in the code in later patches. The code is split
up to have one function to initialize one submodule and a calling function
that takes care of the rest, such as argument handling and translating the
arguments to the paths of the submodules.

This is the first submodule subcommand that is fully converted to C
except for the usage string, so this is actually removing a call to
the `submodule--helper list` function, which is supposed to be used in
this transition. Instead we'll make a direct call to `module_list_compute`.

An explanation why we need to edit the prefixes in cmd_update in
git-submodule.sh in this patch:

By having no processing in the shell part, we need to convey the notion
of wt_prefix and prefix to the C parts, which former patches punted on
and did the processing of displaying path in the shell.

`wt_prefix` used to hold the path from the repository root to the current
directory, e.g. wt_prefix would be t/ if the user invoked the
`git submodule` command in ~/repo/t and ~repo is the GIT_DIR.

`prefix` used to hold the relative path from the repository root to the
operation, e.g. if you have recursive submodules, the shell script would
modify the `prefix` in each recursive step by adding the submodule path.

We will pass `wt_prefix` into the C helper via `git -C <dir>` as that
will setup git in the directory the user actually called git-submodule.sh
from. The `prefix` will be passed in via the `--prefix` option.

Having `prefix` and `wt_prefix` relative to the GIT_DIR of the
calling superproject is unfortunate with this patch as the C code doesn't
know about a possible recursion from a superproject via `submodule update
--init --recursive`.

To fix this, we change the meaning of `wt_prefix` to point to the current
project instead of the superproject and `prefix` to include any relative
paths issues in the superproject. That way `prefix` will become the leading
part for displaying paths and `wt_prefix` will be empty in recursive
calls for now.

The new notion of `wt_prefix` and `prefix` still allows us to reconstruct
the calling directory in the superproject by just traveling reverse of
`prefix`.

a028a1930c fetching submodules: respect submodule.fetchJobs config option
This allows to configure fetching and updating in parallel
without having the command line option.

This moved the responsibility to determine how many parallel processes
to start from builtin/fetch to submodule.c as we need a way to communicate
"The user did not specify the number of parallel processes in the command
line options" in the builtin fetch. The submodule code takes care of
the precedence (CLI > config > default).

2a73b3dad0 run-command: do not pass child process data into callbacks
The expected way to pass data into the callback is to pass them via
the customizable callback pointer. The error reporting in
default_{start_failure, task_finished} is not user friendly enough, that
we want to encourage using the child data for such purposes.

Furthermore the struct child data is cleaned by the run-command API,
before we access them in the callbacks, leading to use-after-free
situations.

50a6c8efa2 use st_add and st_mult for allocation size computation
If our size computation overflows size_t, we may allocate a
much smaller buffer than we expected and overflow it. It's
probably impossible to trigger an overflow in most of these
sites in practice, but it is easy enough convert their
additions and multiplications into overflow-checking
variants. This may be fixing real bugs, and it makes
auditing the code easier.

The desired default behavior for `git_config_set` is to die
whenever an error occurs. Dying is the default for a lot of
internal functions when failures occur and is in this case the
right thing to do for most callers as otherwise we might run into
inconsistent repositories without noticing.

As some code may rely on the actual return values for
`git_config_set` we still require the ability to invoke these
functions without aborting. Rename the existing `git_config_set`
functions to `git_config_set_gently` to keep them available for
those callers.

1a90dfe8a7 submodule: die on config error when linking modules
When trying to connect a submodule with its corresponding
repository in '.git/modules' we try to set the core.worktree
setting in the submodule, which may fail due to an error
encountered in `git_config_set_in_file`.

The function is used in the git-mv command when trying to move a
submodule to another location. We already die when renaming a
file fails but do not pay attention to the case where updating
the connection between submodule and its repository fails. As
this leaves the repository in an inconsistent state, as well,
abort the program by dying early and presenting the failure to
the user.

fbf71645d1 submodule.c: write "Fetching submodule <foo>" to stderr
The "Pushing submodule <foo>" progress output correctly goes to
stderr, but "Fetching submodule <foo>" is going to stdout by
mistake.  Fix it to write to stderr.

Noticed while trying to implement a parallel submodule fetch.  When
this particular output line went to a different file descriptor, it
was buffered separately, resulting in wrongly interleaved output if
we copied it to the terminal naively.

9a6e4f032e add_submodule_odb: initialize alt_odb list earlier
The add_submodule_odb function tries to add a submodule's
object store as an "alternate". It needs the existing list
to be initialized (from the objects/info/alternates file)
for two reasons:

  1. We look for duplicates with the existing alternate
     stores, but obviously this doesn't work if we haven't
     loaded any yet.

  2. We link our new entry into the list by prepending it to
     alt_odb_list. But we do _not_ modify alt_odb_tail.
     This variable starts as NULL, and is a signal to the
     alt_odb code that the list has not yet been
     initialized.

     We then call read_info_alternates on the submodule (to
     recursively load its alternates), which will try to
     append to that tail, assuming it has been initialized.
     This causes us to segfault if it is NULL.

This rarely comes up in practice, because we will have
initialized the alt_odb any time we do an object lookup. So
you can trigger this only when:

  - you try to access a submodule (e.g., a diff with
    diff.submodule=log)

  - the access happens before any other object has been
    accessed (e.g., because the diff is between the working
    tree and the index)

  - the submodule contains an alternates file (so we try to
    add an entry to the NULL alt_odb_tail)

To fix this, we just need to call prepare_alt_odb at the
start of the function (and if we have already initialized,
it is a noop).

Note that we can remove the prepare_alt_odb call from the
end. It is guaranteed to be a noop, since we will have
called it earlier.

c7ab0ba340 avoid sprintf and strcpy with flex arrays
When we are allocating a struct with a FLEX_ARRAY member, we
generally compute the size of the array and then sprintf or
strcpy into it. Normally we could improve a dynamic allocation
like this by using xstrfmt, but it doesn't work here; we
have to account for the size of the rest of the struct.

But we can improve things a bit by storing the length that
we use for the allocation, and then feeding it to xsnprintf
or memcpy, which makes it more obvious that we are not
writing more than the allocated number of bytes.

It would be nice if we had some kind of helper for
allocating generic flex arrays, but it doesn't work that
well:

 - the call signature is a little bit unwieldy:

      d = flex_struct(sizeof(*d), offsetof(d, path), fmt, ...);

   You need offsetof here instead of just writing to the
   end of the base size, because we don't know how the
   struct is packed (partially this is because FLEX_ARRAY
   might not be zero, though we can account for that; but
   the size of the struct may actually be rounded up for
   alignment, and we can't know that).

 - some sites do clever things, like over-allocating because
   they know they will write larger things into the buffer
   later (e.g., struct packed_git here).

So we're better off to just write out each allocation (or
add type-specific helpers, though many of these are one-off
allocations anyway).

35fb4d2e3d submodule refactor: use strbuf_git_path_submodule() in add_submodule_odb()
Functions which directly operate submodule's object database do not
handle the case when the submodule is linked worktree (which are
introduced in c7b3a3d2fe). Instead of fixing the path calculation use
already existing strbuf_git_path_submodule() function without changing
overall behaviour. Then it will be possible to modify only that function
whenever we need to change real location of submodule's repository
content.

12d6ce1dba write_file(): drop "fatal" parameter
All callers except three passed 1 for the "fatal" parameter to ask
this function to die upon error, but to a casual reader of the code,
it was not all obvious what that 1 meant.  Instead, split the
function into two based on a common write_file_v() that takes the
flag, introduce write_file_gently() as a new way to attempt creating
a file without dying on error, and make three callers to call it.

959b5455d0 submodule: implement a config API for lookup of .gitmodules values
In a superproject some commands need to interact with submodules. They
need to query values from the .gitmodules file either from the worktree
of from certain revisions. At the moment this is quite hard since a
caller would need to read the .gitmodules file from the history and then
parse the values. We want to provide an API for this so we have one
place to get values from .gitmodules from any revision (including the
worktree).

The API is realized as a cache which allows us to lazily read
.gitmodules configurations by commit into a runtime cache which can then
be used to easily lookup values from it. Currently only the values for
path or name are stored but it can be extended for any value needed.

It is expected that .gitmodules files do not change often between
commits. Thats why we lookup the .gitmodules sha1 from a commit and then
either lookup an already parsed configuration or parse and cache an
unknown one for each sha1. The cache is lazily build on demand for each
requested commit.

This cache can be used for all purposes which need knowledge about
submodule configurations. Example use cases are:

 * Recursive submodule checkout needs to lookup a submodule name from
   its path when a submodule first appears. This needs be done before
   this configuration exists in the worktree.

 * The implementation of submodule support for 'git archive' needs to
   lookup the submodule name to generate the archive when given a
   revision that is not checked out.

 * 'git fetch' when given the --recurse-submodules=on-demand option (or
   configuration) needs to lookup submodule names by path from the
   database rather than reading from the worktree. For new submodule it
   needs to lookup the name from its path to allow cloning new
   submodules into the .git folder so they can be checked out without
   any network interaction when the user does a checkout of that
   revision.

a5481a6c94 convert "enum date_mode" into a struct
In preparation for adding date modes that may carry extra
information beyond the mode itself, this patch converts the
date_mode enum into a struct.

Most of the conversion is fairly straightforward; we pass
the struct as a pointer and dereference the type field where
necessary. Locations that declare a date_mode can use a "{}"
constructor.  However, the tricky case is where we use the
enum labels as constants, like:

  show_date(t, tz, DATE_NORMAL);

Ideally we could say:

  show_date(t, tz, &{ DATE_NORMAL });

but of course C does not allow that. Likewise, we cannot
cast the constant to a struct, because we need to pass an
actual address. Our options are basically:

  1. Manually add a "struct date_mode d = { DATE_NORMAL }"
     definition to each caller, and pass "&d". This makes
     the callers uglier, because they sometimes do not even
     have their own scope (e.g., they are inside a switch
     statement).

  2. Provide a pre-made global "date_normal" struct that can
     be passed by address. We'd also need "date_rfc2822",
     "date_iso8601", and so forth. But at least the ugliness
     is defined in one place.

  3. Provide a wrapper that generates the correct struct on
     the fly. The big downside is that we end up pointing to
     a single global, which makes our wrapper non-reentrant.
     But show_date is already not reentrant, so it does not
     matter.

This patch implements 3, along with a minor macro to keep
the size of the callers sane.

2b2a5be394 each_ref_fn: change to take an object_id parameter
Change typedef each_ref_fn to take a "const struct object_id *oid"
parameter instead of "const unsigned char *sha1".

To aid this transition, implement an adapter that can be used to wrap
old-style functions matching the old typedef, which is now called
"each_ref_sha1_fn"), and make such functions callable via the new
interface. This requires the old function and its cb_data to be
wrapped in a "struct each_ref_fn_sha1_adapter", and that object to be
used as the cb_data for an adapter function, each_ref_fn_adapter().

This is an enormous diff, but most of it consists of simple,
mechanical changes to the sites that call any of the "for_each_ref"
family of functions. Subsequent to this change, the call sites can be
rewritten one by one to use the new interface.

1d4974c9bc submodule: use capture_command
In is_submodule_commit_present, we call run_command followed
by a pipe read, which is prone to deadlock. It is unlikely
to happen in this case, as rev-list should never produce
more than a single line of output, but it does not hurt to
avoid an anti-pattern (and using the helper simplifies the
setup and cleanup).

2ce406ccb8 get_merge_bases(): always clean-up object flags
The callers of get_merge_bases() can choose to leave object flags
used during the merge-base traversal by passing cleanup=0 as a
parameter, but in practice a very few callers can afford to do so
(namely, "git merge-base"), as they need to compute merge base in
preparation for other processing of their own and they need to see
the object without contaminate flags.

Change the function signature of get_merge_bases_many() and
get_merge_bases() to drop the cleanup parameter, so that the
majority of the callers do not have to say ", 1" at the end.

Give a new get_merge_bases_many_dirty() API to support only a few
callers that know they do not need to spend cycles cleaning up the
object flags.

declaration.  Provide a macro, CHILD_PROCESS_INIT, that can be used to
initialize them statically instead.  That's shorter, doesn't require a

bc8d6b9b90 submodule: don't access the .gitmodules cache entry after removing it
Commit 5fee995244 introduced the stage_updated_gitmodules() function to
add submodule configuration updates to the index. It assumed that even
after calling remove_cache_entry_at() the same cache entry would still be
valid. This was true in the old days, as cache entries could never be
freed, but that is not so sure in the present as there is ongoing work to
free removed cache entries, which makes this code segfault.

Fix that by calling add_file_to_cache() instead of open coding it. Also
remove the "could not find .gitmodules in index" warning, as that won't
happen in regular use cases (and by then just silently adding it to the
index we do the right thing).

Git fails due to a segmentation fault if a submodule path is empty.
Here is an example .gitmodules that will cause a segmentation fault:

    [submodule "foo-module"]
      path
      url = http://host/repo.git
    $ git status
    Segmentation fault (core dumped)

This is because the parsing of "submodule.*.path" is not prepared to
see a value-less "true" and assumes that the value is always
non-NULL (parsing of "ignore" has the same problem).

Fix it by checking the NULL-ness of value and complain with
config_error_nonbool().

95c16418f0 rm: delete .gitmodules entry of submodules removed from the work tree
Currently using "git rm" on a submodule removes the submodule's work tree
from that of the superproject and the gitlink from the index. But the
submodule's section in .gitmodules is left untouched, which is a leftover
of the now removed submodule and might irritate users (as opposed to the
setting in .git/config, this must stay as a reminder that the user showed
interest in this submodule so it will be repopulated later when an older
commit is checked out).

Let "git rm" help the user by not only removing the submodule from the
work tree but by also removing the "submodule.<submodule name>" section
from the .gitmodules file and stage both. This doesn't happen when the
"--cached" option is used, as it would modify the work tree. This also
silently does nothing when no .gitmodules file is found and only issues a
warning when it doesn't have a section for this submodule. This is because
the user might just use plain gitlinks without the .gitmodules file or has
already removed the section by hand before issuing the "git rm" command
(in which case the warning reminds him that rm would have done that for
him). Only when .gitmodules is found and contains merge conflicts the rm
command will fail and tell the user to resolve the conflict before trying
again.

Also extend the man page to inform the user about this new feature. While
at it promote the submodule sub-section to a chapter as it made not much
sense under "REMOVING FILES THAT HAVE DISAPPEARED FROM THE FILESYSTEM".

In t7610 three uses of "git rm submod" had to be replaced with "git rm
--cached submod" because that test expects .gitmodules and the work tree
to stay untouched. Also in t7400 the tests for the remaining settings in
the .gitmodules file had to be changed to assert that these settings are
missing.

0656781fad mv: update the path entry in .gitmodules for moved submodules
Currently using "git mv" on a submodule moves the submodule's work tree in
that of the superproject. But the submodule's path setting in .gitmodules
is left untouched, which is now inconsistent with the work tree and makes
git commands that rely on the proper path -> name mapping (like status and
diff) behave strangely.

Let "git mv" help here by not only moving the submodule's work tree but
also updating the "submodule.<submodule name>.path" setting from the
.gitmodules file and stage both. This doesn't happen when no .gitmodules
file is found and only issues a warning when it doesn't have a section for
this submodule. This is because the user might just use plain gitlinks
without the .gitmodules file or has already updated the path setting by

5fee995244 submodule.c: add .gitmodules staging helper functions
Add the new is_staging_gitmodules_ok() and stage_updated_gitmodules()
functions to submodule.c. The first makes it possible for call sites to
see if the .gitmodules file did contain any unstaged modifications they
would accidentally stage in addition to those they intend to stage
themselves. The second function stages all modifications to the
.gitmodules file, both will be used by subsequent patches for the mv
and rm commands.

a88c915de9 mv: move submodules using a gitfile
When moving a submodule which uses a gitfile to point to the git directory
stored in .git/modules/<name> of the superproject two changes must be made
to make the submodule work: the .git file and the core.worktree setting
must be adjusted to point from work tree to git directory and back.

Achieve that by remembering which submodule uses a gitfile by storing the
result of read_gitfile() of each submodule. If that is not NULL the new
function connect_work_tree_and_git_dir() is called after renaming the
submodule's work tree which updates the two settings to the new values.

Extend the man page to inform the user about that feature (and while at it
change the description to not talk about a script anymore, as mv is a
builtin for quite some time now).

9c5e6c802c Convert "struct cache_entry *" to "const ..." wherever possible
I attempted to make index_state->cache[] a "const struct cache_entry **"
to find out how existing entries in index are modified and where. The
question I have is what do we do if we really need to keep track of on-disk
changes in the index. The result is

 - diff-lib.c: setting CE_UPTODATE

 - name-hash.c: setting CE_HASHED

 - preload-index.c, read-cache.c, unpack-trees.c and
   builtin/update-index: obvious

 - entry.c: write_entry() may refresh the checked out entry via
   fill_stat_cache_info(). This causes "non-const struct cache_entry
   *" in builtin/apply.c, builtin/checkout-index.c and
   builtin/checkout.c

 - builtin/ls-files.c: --with-tree changes stagemask and may set
   CE_UPDATE

Of these, write_entry() and its call sites are probably most
interesting because it modifies on-disk info. But this is stat info
and can be retrieved via refresh, at least for porcelain
commands. Other just uses ce_flags for local purposes.

So, keeping track of "dirty" entries is just a matter of setting a
flag in index modification functions exposed by read-cache.c. Except
unpack-trees, the rest of the code base does not do anything funny
behind read-cache's back.

The actual patch is less valueable than the summary above. But if
anyone wants to re-identify the above sites. Applying this patch, then
this:

ecaee8050c pretty: --format output should honor logOutputEncoding
One can set an alias
	$ git config [--global] alias.lg "log --graph --pretty=format:'%Cred%h%Creset

	--abbrev-commit --date=local"

to see the log as a pretty tree (like *gitk* but in a terminal).

However, log messages written in an encoding i18n.commitEncoding which differs
from terminal encoding are shown corrupted even when i18n.logOutputEncoding
and terminal encoding are the same (e.g. log messages committed on a Cygwin box
with Windows-1251 encoding seen on a Linux box with a UTF-8 encoding and vice versa).

To simplify an example we can say the following two commands are expected
to give the same output to a terminal:

	$ git log --oneline --no-color
	$ git log --pretty=format:'%h %s'

However, the former pays attention to i18n.logOutputEncoding
configuration, while the latter does not when it formats "%s".

The same corruption is true for
	$ git diff --submodule=log
and
	$ git rev-list --pretty=format:%s HEAD
and
	$ git reset --hard

This patch makes pretty --format honor logOutputEncoding when it formats
log message.

837154978e submodule: clarify logic in show_submodule_summary
There are two uses of the "left" and "right" commit variables that
make it hard to be sure what values they have (both for the reader,
and for gcc, which wrongly complains that they might be used
uninitialized).

The function starts with a cascading if statement, checking that the
input sha1s exist, and finally working up to preparing a revision
walk. We only prepare the walk if the cascading conditional did not
find any problems, which we check by seeing whether it set the
"message" variable or not. It's simpler and more obvious to just add
a condition to the end of the cascade.

Later, we check the same "message" variable when deciding whether to
clear commit marks on the left/right commits; if it is set, we
presumably never started the walk. This is wrong, though; we might
have started the walk and munged commit flags, only to encounter an
error afterwards. We should always clear the flags on left/right if
they exist, whether the walk was successful or not.

6bfe19ee16 submodule: simplify memory handling in config parsing
We keep a strbuf for the name of the submodule, even though
we only ever add one string to it. Let's just use xmemdupz
instead, which is slightly more efficient and makes it
easier to follow what is going on.

Unfortunately, we still end up having to deal with some
memory ownership issues in some code branches, as we have to
allocate the string in order to do a string list lookup, and
then only sometimes want to hand ownership of that string
over to the string_list. Still, making that explicit in the
code (as opposed to sometimes detaching the strbuf, and then
always releasing it) makes it a little more obvious what is
going on.

Currently using "git rm" on a submodule - populated or not - fails with
this error:

	fatal: git rm: '<submodule path>': Is a directory

This made sense in the past as there was no way to remove a submodule
without possibly removing unpushed parts of the submodule's history
contained in its .git directory too, so erroring out here protected the
user from possible loss of data.

But submodules cloned with a recent git version do not contain the .git
directory anymore, they use a gitfile to point to their git directory
which is safely stored inside the superproject's .git directory. The work
tree of these submodules can safely be removed without losing history, so
let's teach git to do so.

Using rm on an unpopulated submodule now removes the empty directory from
the work tree and the gitlink from the index. If the submodule's directory
is missing from the work tree, it will still be removed from the index.

Using rm on a populated submodule using a gitfile will apply the usual
checks for work tree modification adapted to submodules (unless forced).
For a submodule that means that the HEAD is the same as recorded in the
index, no tracked files are modified and no untracked files that aren't
ignored are present in the submodules work tree (ignored files are deemed
expendable and won't stop a submodule's work tree from being removed).
That logic has to be applied in all nested submodules too.

Using rm on a submodule which has its .git directory inside the work trees
top level directory will just error out like it did before to protect the
repository, even when forced. In the future git could either provide a
message informing the user to convert the submodule to use a gitfile or
even attempt to do the conversion itself, but that is not part of this
change.

50d89ad654 submodule: use argv_array instead of hand-building arrays
fetch_populated_submodules() allocates the full argv array it uses to
recurse into the submodules from the number of given options plus the six
argv values it is going to add. It then initializes it with those values
which won't change during the iteration and copies the given options into
it. Inside the loop the two argv values different for each submodule get
replaced with those currently valid.

However, this technique is brittle and error-prone (as the comment to
explain the magic number 6 indicates), so let's replace it with an
argv_array. Instead of replacing the argv values, push them to the
argv_array just before the run_command() call (including the option
separating them) and pop them from the argv_array right after that.

diff_setup_done() has historically returned an error code, but lost
the last nonzero return in 943d5b7 (allow diff.renamelimit to be set
regardless of -M/-C, 2006-08-09).  The callers were in a pretty
confused state: some actually checked for the return code, and some
did not.

Let it return void, and patch all callers to take this into account.
This conveniently also gets rid of a handful of different(!) error
messages that could never be triggered anyway.

Note that the function can still die().

When using this option git will search for all submodules that
have changed in the revisions to be send. It will then try to
push the currently checked out branch of each submodule.

This helps when a user has finished working on a change which
involves submodules and just wants to push everything in one go.

bcc0a3ea38 Teach revision walking machinery to walk multiple times sequencially
Previously it was not possible to iterate revisions twice using the
revision walking api. We add a reset_revision_walk() which clears the
used flags. This allows us to do multiple sequencial revision walks.

We add the appropriate calls to the existing submodule machinery doing
revision walks. This is done to avoid surprises if future code wants to
call these functions more than once during the processes lifetime.

diff and status run "git status --porcelain" inside each populated
submodule to see if it contains changes (unless told not to do so via
config or command line option). When that fails, e.g. due to a corrupt
submodule .git directory, it just prints "git status --porcelain failed"
or "Could not run git status --porcelain" without giving the user a clue
where that happened.

Add '"in submodule %s", path' to these error strings to tell the user
where exactly the problem occurred.

The submodule merge search is not useful during virtual merges because
the results cannot be used automatically.  Furthermore any suggestions
made by the search may apply to commits different than HEAD:sub and
MERGE_HEAD:sub, thus confusing the user.  Skip searching for submodule
merges during a virtual merge such as that between B and C while merging
the heads of:

    B---BC
   / \ /
  A   X
   \ / \
    C---CB

Run the search only when the recursion level is zero (!o->call_depth).
This fixes known breakage tested in t7405-submodule-merge.

c1189caeaf refactor argv_array into generic code
The submodule code recently grew generic code to build a
dynamic argv array. Many other parts of the code can reuse
this, too, so let's make it generically available.

There are two enhancements not found in the original code:

  1. We now handle the NULL-termination invariant properly,
     even when no strings have been pushed (before, you
     could have an empty, NULL argv). This was not a problem
     for the submodule code, which always pushed at least
     one argument, but was not sufficiently safe for
     generic code.

  2. There is a formatted variant of the "push" function.
     This is a convenience function which was not needed by
     the submodule code, but will make it easier to port
     other users to the new code.

6859de45a9 fetch: avoid quadratic loop checking for updated submodules
Recent versions of git can be slow to fetch repositories with a
large number of refs (or when they already have a large
number of refs). For example, GitHub makes pull-requests
available as refs, which can lead to a large number of
available refs. This slowness goes away when submodule
recursion is turned off:

  $ git ls-remote git://github.com/rails/rails.git | wc -l
  3034

  [this takes ~10 seconds of CPU time to complete]
  git fetch --recurse-submodules=no \
    git://github.com/rails/rails.git "refs/*:refs/*"

  [this still isn't done after 10 _minutes_ of pegging the CPU]
  git fetch \
    git://github.com/rails/rails.git "refs/*:refs/*"

You can produce a quicker and simpler test case like this:

Which yields timings like:

    3200           54.09

Notice that although the number of refs doubles in each
trial, the CPU time spent quadruples.

The problem is that the submodule recursion code works
something like:

  - for each ref we fetch
    - for each commit in git rev-list $new_sha1 --not --all
      - add modified submodules to list
  - fetch any newly referenced submodules

But that means if we fetch N refs, we start N revision
walks. Worse, because we use "--all", the number of refs we
must process that constitute "--all" keeps growing, too. And
you end up doing O(N^2) ref resolutions.

Instead, this patch structures the code like this:

  - for each sha1 we already have
    - add $old_sha1 to list $old
  - for each ref we fetch
    - add $new_sha1 to list $new
  - for each commit in git rev-list $new --not $old
    - add modified submodules to list
  - fetch any newly referenced submodules

This yields timings like:

  # refs  seconds of CPU
  100               0.00
  200               0.04
  400               0.04
  800               0.10
  1600              0.21
  3200              0.39

Note that the amount of effort doubles as the number of refs
doubles. Similarly, the fetch of rails.git takes about as
much time as it does with --recurse-submodules=no.

It makes no sense to do the - possibly very expensive - call to "rev-list
<new-ref-sha1> --not --all" in check_for_new_submodule_commits() when
there aren't any submodules configured.

Leave check_for_new_submodule_commits() early when no name <-> path
mappings for submodules are found in the configuration. To make that work
reading the configuration had to be moved further up in cmd_fetch(), as
doing that after the actual fetch of the superproject was too late.

d2b17b3220 push: Don't push a repository with unpushed submodules
When working with submodules it is easy to forget to push a
submodule to the server but pushing a super-project that
contains a commit for that submodule. The result is that the
superproject points at a submodule commit that is not available
on the server.

This adds the option --recurse-submodules=check to push. When
using this option git will check that all submodule commits that
are about to be pushed are present on a remote of the submodule.

To be able to use a combined diff, disabling a diff callback has
been removed from combined-diff.c.

the new commits and avoid future regressions in this area by moving a
submodule in t5526 into a subdirectory.

d4e98b581b Submodules: Don't parse .gitmodules when it contains, merge conflicts
Commands like "git status", "git diff" and "git fetch" would fail when the
.gitmodules file contained merge conflicts because the config parser would
call die() when hitting the conflict markers:

    "fatal: bad config file line <n> in <path>/.gitmodules"

While this behavior was on the safe side, it is really unhelpful to the
user to have commands like status and diff fail, as these are needed to
find out what's going on. And the error message is only mildly helpful,
as it points to the right file but doesn't mention that it is unmerged.
Users of git gui were not shown any conflicts at all when this happened.

Improve the situation by checking if the index records .gitmodules as
unmerged. When that is the case we can't make any assumptions about the
configuration to be found there after the merge conflict is resolved by
the user, so assume that all recursion is disabled unless .git/config or
the global config say otherwise.

As soon as the merge conflict is resolved and the .gitmodules file has
been staged subsequent commands again honor any configuration done there.

Introduce two functions:

 - prepare_submodule_summary prepares the revision walker
   to list changes in a submodule.  That is, it:

   * finds merge bases between the commits pointed to this
     path from before ("left") and after ("right") the change;
   * checks whether this is a fast-forward or fast-backward;
   * prepares a revision walk to list commits in the symmetric
     difference between the commits at each endpoint.

   It returns nonzero on error.

 - print_submodule_summary runs the revision walk and saves
   the result to a strbuf in --left-right format.

The goal is just readability.  No functional change intended.

88a21979c5 fetch/pull: recurse into submodules when necessary
To be able to access all commits of populated submodules referenced by the
superproject it is sufficient to only then let "git fetch" recurse into a
submodule when the new commits fetched in the superproject record new
commits for it. Having these commits present is extremely useful when
using the "--submodule" option to "git diff" (which is what "git gui" and
"gitk" do since 1.6.6), as all submodule commits needed for creating a
descriptive output can be accessed. Also merging submodule commits (added
in 1.7.3) depends on the submodule commits in question being present to
work. Last but not least this enables disconnected operation when using
submodules, as all commits necessary for a successful "git submodule
update -N" will have been fetched automatically. So we choose this mode as
the default for fetch and pull.

Before a new or changed ref from upstream is updated in update_local_ref()
"git rev-list <new-sha1> --not --branches --remotes" is used to determine
all newly fetched commits. These are then walked and diffed against their
parent(s) to see if a submodule has been changed. If that is the case, its
path is stored to be fetched after the superproject fetch is completed.

Using the "--recurse-submodules" or the "--no-recurse-submodules" option
disables the examination of the fetched refs because the result will be
ignored anyway.

There is currently no infrastructure for storing deleted and new
submodules in the .git directory of the superproject. That's why fetch and
pull for now only fetch submodules that are already checked out and are
not renamed.

In t7403 the "--no-recurse-submodules" argument had to be added to "git
pull" to avoid failure because of the moved upstream submodule repo.

behavior for "git fetch" and "git pull". It specifies if these commands
should recurse into submodules and fetch new commits there too and can be
set separately for each submodule.

In the .gitmodules file "submodule.<name>.fetchRecurseSubmodules" entries
are read before looking for them in .git/config. Thus settings found in
.git/config will override those from .gitmodules, thereby allowing the
user to ignore settings given by the remote side while also letting
upstream set reasonable defaults for those users who don't have special
needs.

This configuration can be overridden by the command line option
"--[no-]recurse-submodules" of "git fetch" and "git pull".

7dce19d374 fetch/pull: Add the --recurse-submodules option
Until now you had to call "git submodule update" (without -N|--no-fetch
option) or something like "git submodule foreach git fetch" to fetch
new commits in populated submodules from their remote.

This could lead to "(commits not present)" messages in the output of
"git diff --submodule" (which is used by "git gui" and "gitk") after
fetching or pulling new commits in the superproject and is an obstacle for
implementing recursive checkout of submodules. Also "git submodule
update" cannot fetch changes when disconnected, so it was very easy to
forget to fetch the submodule changes before disconnecting only to
discover later that they are needed.

This patch adds the "--recurse-submodules" option to recursively fetch
each populated submodule from the url configured in the .git/config of the
submodule at the end of each "git fetch" or during "git pull" in the
superproject. The submodule paths are taken from the index.

The hidden option "--submodule-prefix" is added to "git fetch" to be able
to print out the full paths of nested submodules.

be4f2b408e Add the 'diff.ignoreSubmodules' config setting
When you have a lot of submodules checked out, the time penalty to check
for dirty submodules can easily imply a multiplication of the total time
by the factor 20. This makes the difference between almost instantaneous
(< 2 seconds) and unbearably slow (> 50 seconds) here, since the disk
caches are constantly overloaded.

To this end, the submodule.*.ignore config option was introduced, but it
is per-submodule.

This commit introduces a global config setting to set a default
(porcelain) value for the --ignore-submodules option, keeping the
default at 'none'. It can be overridden by the submodule.*.ignore
setting and by the --ignore-submodules option.

Incidentally, this commit fixes an issue with the overriding logic:
multiple --ignore-submodules options would not clear the previously
set flags.

While at it, fix a typo in the documentation for submodule.*.ignore.

will override those from .gitmodules, thereby allowing the local developer
to ignore settings given by the remote side while also letting upstream
set defaults for those users who don't have special needs.

aee9c7d654 Submodules: Add the new "ignore" config option for diff and status
The new "ignore" config option controls the default behavior for "git
status" and the diff family. It specifies under what circumstances they
consider submodules as modified and can be set separately for each
submodule.

The command line option "--ignore-submodules=" has been extended to accept
the new parameter "none" for both status and diff.

Users that chose submodules to get rid of long work tree scanning times
might want to set the "dirty" option for those submodules. This brings
back the pre 1.7.0 behavior, where submodule work trees were never
scanned for modifications. By using "--ignore-submodules=none" on the
command line the status and diff commands can be told to do a full scan.

This option can be set to the following values (which have the same name
and meaning as for the "--ignore-submodules" option of status and diff):

"all": All changes to the submodule will be ignored.

"dirty": Only differences of the commit recorded in the superproject and
	the submodules HEAD will be considered modifications, all changes
	to the work tree of the submodule will be ignored. When using this
	value, the submodule will not be scanned for work tree changes at
	all, leading to a performance benefit on large submodules.

"untracked": Only untracked files in the submodules work tree are ignored,
	a changed HEAD and/or modified files in the submodule will mark it
	as modified.

"none" (which is the default): Either untracked or modified files in a
	submodules work tree or a difference between the subdmodules HEAD
	and the commit recorded in the superproject will make it show up
	as changed. This value is added as a new parameter for the
	"--ignore-submodules" option of the diff family and "git status"
	so the user can override the settings in the configuration.
