C compilers do type checking to make life easier for us. So
rely on that and update all hashmap_entry_init callers to take
"struct hashmap_entry *" to avoid future bugs while improving
safety and readability.

The first consumer of pattern-matching filenames was the
.gitignore feature. In that context, storing a list of patterns
as a 'struct exclude_list' makes sense. However, the
sparse-checkout feature then adopted these structures and methods,
but with the opposite meaning: these patterns match the files
that should be included!
It would be clearer to rename this entire library as a "pattern
matching" library, and the callers apply exclusion/inclusion
logic accordingly based on their needs.
This commit renames several methods defined in dir.h to make
more sense with the renamed 'struct exclude_list' to 'struct
pattern_list' and 'struct exclude' to 'struct path_pattern':
* last_exclude_matching() -> last_matching_pattern()
* parse_exclude() -> parse_path_pattern()
In addition, the word 'exclude' was replaced with 'pattern'
in the methods below:
* add_exclude_list()
* add_excludes_from_file_to_list()
* add_excludes_from_file()
* add_excludes_from_blob_to_list()
* add_exclude()
* clear_exclude_list()
A few methods with the word "exclude" remain. These will
be handled seperately. In particular, the method
"is_excluded()" is concretely about the .gitignore file
relative to a specific directory. This is the important
boundary between library and consumer: is_excluded() cares
about .gitignore, but is_excluded() calls
last_matching_pattern() to make that decision.

Asking "git check-attr" about a macro (e.g. "binary") on a specific
path did not work correctly, even though "git check-attr -a" listed
such a macro correctly. This has been corrected.

Since 60a12722ac (attr: remove maybe-real, maybe-macro from git_attr,
2017-01-27), we will always mark an attribute macro (e.g., "binary")
that is specifically queried for as "unspecified", even though listing
_all_ attributes would display it at set. E.g.:
$ echo "* binary" >.gitattributes
$ git check-attr -a file
file: binary: set
file: diff: unset
file: merge: unset
file: text: unset
$ git check-attr binary file
file: binary: unspecified
The problem stems from an incorrect conversion of the optimization from
06a604e670 (attr: avoid heavy work when we know the specified attr is
not defined, 2014-12-28). There we tried in collect_some_attrs() to
avoid even looking at the attr_stack when the user has asked for "foo"
and we know that "foo" did not ever appear in any .gitattributes file.
It used a flag "maybe_real" in each attribute struct, where "real" meant
that the attribute appeared in an actual file (we have to make this
distinction because we also create an attribute struct for any names
that are being queried). But as explained in that commit message, the
meaning of "real" was tangled with some special cases around macros.
When 60a12722ac later refactored the macro code, it dropped maybe_real
entirely. This missed the fact that "maybe_real" could be unset for two
reasons: because of a macro, or because it was never found during
parsing. This had two results:
- the optimization in collect_some_attrs() ceased doing anything
meaningful, since it no longer kept track of "was it found during
parsing"
- worse, it actually kicked in when the caller _did_ ask about a macro
by name, causing us to mark it as unspecified
It should be possible to salvage this optimization, but let's start with
just removing the remnants. It hasn't been doing anything (except
creating bugs) since 60a12722ac, and nobody seems to have noticed the
performance regression. It's more important to fix the correctness
problem clearly first.
I've added two tests here. The second one actually shows off the bug.
The test of "check-attr -a" is not strictly necessary, but we currently
do not test attribute macros much, and the builtin "binary" not at all.
So this increases our general test coverage, as well as making sure we
didn't mess up this related case.

Since attr checking API now take the index, there's no need to set an
index in advance with this call. Most call sites are straightforward
because they either pass the_index or NULL (which defaults back to
the_index previously). There's only one suspicious call site in
unpack-trees.c where it sets a different index.
This code in unpack-trees is about to check out entries from the
new/temporary index after merging is done in it. The attributes will
be used by entry.c code to do crlf conversion if needed. entry.c now
respects struct checkout's istate field, and this field is correctly
set in unpack-trees.c, there should be no regression from this change.

Make the attr API take an index_state instead of assuming the_index in
attr code. All call sites are converted blindly to keep the patch
simple and retain current behavior. Individual call sites may receive
further updates to use the right index instead of the_index.
There is one ugly temporary workaround added in attr.c that needs some
more explanation.
Commit c24f3abace (apply: file commited with CRLF should roundtrip
diff and apply - 2017-08-19) forces one convert_to_git() call to NOT
read the index at all. But what do you know, we read it anyway by
falling back to the_index. When "istate" from convert_to_git is now
propagated down to read_attr_from_array() we will hit segfault
somewhere inside read_blob_data_from_index.
The right way of dealing with this is to kill "use_index" variable and
only follow "istate" but at this stage we are not ready for that:
while most git_attr_set_direction() calls just passes the_index to be
assigned to use_index, unpack-trees passes a different one which is
used by entry.c code, which has no way to know what index to use if we
delete use_index. So this has to be done later.

In d8193743e0 (usage.c: add BUG() function, 2017-05-12), a new macro
was introduced to use for reporting bugs instead of die(). It was then
subsequently used to convert one single caller in 588a538ae5
(setup_git_env: convert die("BUG") to BUG(), 2017-05-12).
The cover letter of the patch series containing this patch
(cf 20170513032414.mfrwabt4hovujde2@sigill.intra.peff.net) is not
terribly clear why only one call site was converted, or what the plan
is for other, similar calls to die() to report bugs.
Let's just convert all remaining ones in one fell swoop.
This trick was performed by this invocation:

Add API to hashmap to disable item counting and thus automatic rehashing.
Also include API to later re-enable them.
When item counting is disabled, the map.size field is invalid. So to
prevent accidents, the field has been renamed and an accessor function
hashmap_get_size() has been added. All direct references to this
field have been been updated. And the name of the field changed
to map.private_size to communicate this.

When using the hashmap a common need is to have access to caller provided
data in the compare function. A couple of times we abuse the keydata field
to pass in the data needed. This happens for example in patch-ids.c.
This patch changes the function signature of the compare function
to have one more void pointer available. The pointer given for each
invocation of the compare function must be defined in the init function
of the hashmap and is just passed through.
Documentation of this new feature is deferred to a later patch.
This is a rather mechanical conversion, just adding the new pass-through
parameter. However while at it improve the naming of the fields of all
compare functions used by hashmaps by ensuring unused parameters are
prefixed with 'unused_' and naming the parameters what they are (instead
of 'unused' make it 'unused_keydata').

When fopen() returns NULL, it could be because the given path does not
exist, but it could also be some other errors and the caller has to
check. Add a wrapper so we don't have to repeat the same error check
everywhere.

The pathspec mechanism is extended via the new
":(attr:eol=input)pattern/to/match" syntax to filter paths so that it
requires paths to not just match the given pattern but also have the
specified attrs attached for them to be chosen.

Move the 'git_attr_set_direction()' up to be closer to the variables
that it modifies as well as a small formatting by renaming the variable
'new' to 'new_direction' so that it is more descriptive.
Update the comment about how 'direction' is used to read the state of
the world. It should be noted that callers of
'git_attr_set_direction()' should ensure that other threads are not
making calls into the attribute system until after the call to
'git_attr_set_direction()' completes. This function essentially acts as
reset button for the attribute system and should be handled with care.

The last big hurdle towards a thread-safe API for the attribute system
is the reliance on a global attribute stack that is modified during each
call into the attribute system.
This patch removes this global stack and instead a stack is stored
locally in each attr_check instance. This opens up the opportunity for
future optimizations to customize the attribute stack for the attributes
that a particular attr_check struct is interested in.
One caveat with pushing the attribute stack into the attr_check
structure is that the attribute system now needs to keep track of all
active attr_check instances. Due to the direction mechanism the stack
needs to be dropped when the direction is switched. In order to ensure
correctness when the direction is changed the attribute system needs to
iterate through all active attr_check instances and drop each of their
stacks.

Whether or not a git attribute is real or a macro isn't a property of
the attribute but rather it depends on the attribute stack (which
.gitattribute files were read).
This patch removes the 'maybe_real' and 'maybe_macro' fields in a
git_attr and instead adds the 'macro' field to a attr_check_item. The
'macro' indicates (if non-NULL) that a particular attribute is a macro
for the given attribute stack. It's populated, through a quick scan of
the attribute stack, with the match_attr that corresponds to the macro's
definition. This way the attribute stack only needs to be scanned a
single time prior to attribute collection instead of each time a macro
needs to be expanded.

Currently there is a reliance on 'check_all_attr' which is a global
array of 'attr_check_item' items which is used to store the value of
each attribute during the collection process.
This patch eliminates this global and instead creates an array per
'attr_check' instance which is then used in the attribute collection
process. This brings the attribute system one step closer to being
thread-safe.

The current implementation of the attribute dictionary uses a custom
hashtable. This modernizes the dictionary by converting it to the builtin
'hashmap' structure.
Also, in order to enable a threaded API in the future add an
accompanying mutex which must be acquired prior to accessing the
dictionary of interned attributes.

Convert 'invalid_attr_name()' to 'attr_name_valid()' and use positive
logic for the return value. In addition create a helper function that
prints out an error message when an invalid attribute name is used.
We could later update the message to exactly spell out what the
rules for a good attribute name are, etc.

This updates the other two ways the attribute check is done via an
array of "struct attr_check_item" elements. These two niches
appear only in "git check-attr".
* The caller does not know offhand what attributes it wants to ask
about and cannot use attr_check_initl() to prepare the
attr_check structure.
* The caller may not know what attributes it wants to ask at all,
and instead wants to learn everything that the given path has.
Such a caller can call attr_check_alloc() to allocate an empty
attr_check, and then call attr_check_append() to add attribute names
one by one.

A common pattern to check N attributes for many paths is to
(1) prepare an array A of N attr_check_item items;
(2) call git_attr() to intern the N attribute names and fill A;
(3) repeatedly call git_check_attrs() for path with N and A;
A look-up for these N attributes for a single path P scans the
entire attr_stack, starting from the .git/info/attributes file and
then .gitattributes file in the directory the path P is in, going
upwards to find .gitattributes file found in parent directories.
An earlier commit 06a604e6 (attr: avoid heavy work when we know the
specified attr is not defined, 2014-12-28) tried to optimize out
this scanning for one trivial special case: when the attribute being
sought is known not to exist, we do not have to scan for it. While
this may be a cheap and effective heuristic, it would not work well
when N is (much) more than 1.
What we would want is a more customized way to skip irrelevant
entries in the attribute stack, and the definition of irrelevance
is tied to the set of attributes passed to git_check_attrs() call,
i.e. the set of attributes being sought. The data necessary for
this optimization needs to live alongside the set of attributes, but
a simple array of git_attr_check_elem simply does not have any place
for that.
Introduce "struct attr_check" that contains N, the number of
attributes being sought, and A, the array that holds N
attr_check_item items, and a function git_check_attr() that
takes a path P and this structure as its parameters. This structure
can later be extended to hold extra data necessary for optimization.
Also, to make it easier to write the first two steps in common
cases, introduce git_attr_check_initl() helper function, which takes
a NULL-terminated list of attribute names and initialize this
structure.

The traditional API to check attributes is to prepare an N-element
array of "struct git_attr_check" and pass N and the array to the
function "git_check_attr()" as arguments.
In preparation to revamp the API to pass a single structure, in
which these N elements are held, rename the type used for these
individual array elements to "struct attr_check_item" and rename
the function to "git_check_attrs()".

There are too many repetitious "I have this new attr_stack element;
push it at the top of the stack" sequence. The new helper function
push_stack() gives us a way to express what is going on at these
places, and as a side effect, halves the number of times we mention
the attr_stack global variable.

If any error is noticed after the match_attr structure is allocated,
we shouldn't just return NULL from this function.
Add a fail_return label that frees the allocated structure and
returns NULL, and consistently jump there when we want to return
NULL after cleaning up.

The double-loop wants to do an early return immediately when one
matching macro is found. Eliminate the extra variable 'a' used for
that purpose and rewrite the "assign the found item to 'a' to make
it non-NULL and force the loop(s) to terminate" with a direct return
from there.

The low-level attribute and gitignore code will try to look
in $GIT_DIR/info for any repo-level configuration files,
even if we have not actually determined that we are in a
repository (e.g., running "git grep --no-index"). In such a
case they end up looking for ".git/info/attributes", etc.
This is generally harmless, as such a file is unlikely to
exist outside of a repository, but it's still conceptually
the wrong thing to do.
Let's detect this situation explicitly and skip reading the
file (i.e., the same behavior we'd get if we were in a
repository and the file did not exist).

The values defined by the macro EXC_FLAG_* (1, 4, 8, 16) are stored
in fields of the structs "pattern" and "exclude", some functions
arguments and a local variable. None of these uses its most
significant bit in any special way and there is no good reason to
use a signed integer for them.
And while we're at it, document "flags" of "exclude" to explicitly
state the values it's supposed to take on.

Using FLEX_ARRAY macros reduces the amount of manual
computation size we have to do. It also ensures we don't
overflow size_t, and it makes sure we write the same number
of bytes that we allocated.

Each of these cases can be converted to use ALLOC_ARRAY or
REALLOC_ARRAY, which has two advantages:
1. It automatically checks the array-size multiplication
for overflow.
2. It always uses sizeof(*array) for the element-size,
so that it can never go out of sync with the declared
type of the array.

One of the most common uses of git_path() is to pass a
constant, like git_path("MERGE_MSG"). This has two
drawbacks:
1. The return value is a static buffer, and the lifetime
is dependent on other calls to git_path, etc.
2. There's no compile-time checking of the pathname. This
is OK for a one-off (after all, we have to spell it
correctly at least once), but many of these constant
strings appear throughout the code.
This patch introduces a series of functions to "memoize"
these strings, which are essentially globals for the
lifetime of the program. We compute the value once, take
ownership of the buffer, and return the cached value for
subsequent calls. cache.h provides a helper macro for
defining these functions as one-liners, and defines a few
common ones for global use.
Using a macro is a little bit gross, but it does nicely
document the purpose of the functions. If we need to touch
them all later (e.g., because we learned how to change the
git_dir variable at runtime, and need to invalidate all of
the stored values), it will be much easier to have the
complete list.
Note that the shared-global functions have separate, manual
declarations. We could do something clever with the macros
(e.g., expand it to a declaration in some places, and a
declaration _and_ a definition in path.c). But there aren't
that many, and it's probably better to stay away from
too-magical macros.
Likewise, if we abandon the C preprocessor in favor of
generating these with a script, we could get much fancier.
E.g., normalizing "FOO/BAR-BAZ" into "git_path_foo_bar_baz".
But the small amount of saved typing is probably not worth
the resulting confusion to readers who want to grep for the
function's definition.

If we have never seen attr 'X' in any .gitattributes file we have
examined so far, we can be sure that 'X' is not defined. So no need to
go over all the attr stack to look for attr 'X'. This is the purpose
behind this new field maybe_real.
This optimization breaks down if macros are involved because we can't
know for sure what macro would expand to 'X' at attr parsing time. But
if we go the pessimistic way and assume all macros are expanded, we hit
the builtin "binary" macro. At least the "diff" attr defined in this
macro will disable this optimization for git-grep. So we wait until
any attr lines _may_ reference to a macro before we turn this off.
In git.git, this reduces the number of fill_one() call for "git grep
abcdefghi" from ~5348 to 2955. The optimization stops when it reads
t/.gitattributes, which uses 'binary' macro. We could probably reduce
it further by limiting the 'binary' reference to t/ and subdirs only
in this case.
"git grep" is actually a good example to justify this patch. The
command checks "diff" attribute on every file. People usually don't
define this attribute. But they pay the attr lookup penalty anyway
without this patch, proportional to the number of attr lines they have
in repo.

Keep track of all recognized macros in the new "maybe_macro" field.
If this field is true, it _may_ be a macro (depending on what's in the
current attr stack). But if the field is false, it's definitely not a
macro, no need to go through the whole attr stack in macroexpand_one()
to search for one.
Without this, "git grep abcdefghi" on git.git hits the inner loop in
macroexpand_one() 2481 times. With this, it's 66 times.

A pattern "dir" (without trailing slash) in the attributes file
stopped matching a directory "dir" by mistake with an earlier change
that wanted to allow pattern "dir/" to also match.

The function is given a string that ends with a slash to signal that
the path is a directory to make sure that a pattern that ends with a
slash (i.e. MUSTBEDIR) can tell directories and non-directories
apart. However, the pattern itself (pat->pattern and
pat->patternlen) that came from such a MUSTBEDIR pattern is
represented as a string that ends with a slash, but patternlen does
not count that trailing slash. A MUSTBEDIR pattern "element/" is
represented as a counted string <"element/", 7> and this must match
match pathname "element/".
Because match_basename() and match_pathname() want to see pathname
"element" to match against the pattern <"element/", 7>, reduce the
length of the path to exclude the trailing slash when calling
these functions.

The function takes two strings (pathname and basename) as if they
are independent strings, but in reality, the latter is always
pointing into a substring in the former.
Clarify this relationship by expressing the latter as an offset into
the former.

Before 82dce99 (attr: more matching optimizations from .gitignore,
2012-10-15), .gitattributes did not have any special treatment of a
leading '!'. The docs, however, always said
The rules how the pattern matches paths are the same as in
`.gitignore` files; see linkgit:gitignore[5].
By those rules, leading '!' means pattern negation. So 82dce99
correctly determined that this kind of line makes no sense and should
be disallowed.
However, users who actually had a rule for files starting with a '!'
are in a bad position: before 82dce99 '!' matched that literal
character, so it is conceivable that users have .gitattributes with
such lines in them. After 82dce99 the unescaped version was
disallowed in such a way that git outright refuses to run(!) most
commands in the presence of such a .gitattributes. It therefore
becomes very hard to fix, let alone work with, such repositories.
Let's at least allow the users to fix their repos: change the fatal
error into a warning.

The attribute mechanism didn't allow limiting attributes to be
applied to only a single directory itself with "path/" like the
exclude mechanism does. The initial implementation of this that was
merged to 'maint' and 1.8.1.1 had severe performance degradations.

94bc671 (Add directory pattern matching to attributes - 2012-12-08)
uses find_basename() to calculate the length of directory part in
prepare_attr_stack. This function expects the directory without the
trailing slash (as "origin" field in match_attr struct is without the
trailing slash). find_basename() includes the trailing slash and
confuses push/pop algorithm.
Consider path = "abc/def" and the push down code:

dirlen is 4, not 3, without this patch. So when attr_stack->origin is
"abc", it'll miss the exit condition because 4 <= 3 is wrong. It'll
then try to push "abc/" down the attr stack (because "cp" would be
NULL). So we have both "abc" and "abc/" in the stack.
Next time when "abc/ghi" is checked, "abc/" is popped out because of
the off-by-one dirlen, only to be pushed back in again by the above
code. This repeats for all files in the same directory. Which means
at least one failed open syscall per file, or more if .gitattributes
exists.
This is the perf result with 10 runs on git.git:

The manpage of gitattributes says: "The rules how the pattern
matches paths are the same as in .gitignore files" and the gitignore
pattern matching has a pattern ending with / for directory matching.
This rule is specifically relevant for the 'export-ignore' rule used
for git archive.

implementation accumulates more optimizations while attr's stays the

merged due to differences in exclude and attr, for example:
* "!pattern" syntax is forbidden in .gitattributes. As an attribute
can be unset (i.e. set to a special value "false") or made back to
unspecified (i.e. not even set to "false"), "!pattern attr" is unclear
which one it means.
* we support attaching attributes to directories, but git-core
internally does not currently make use of attributes on
directories.

The attribute system may be asked for a path that itself or its
leading directories no longer exists in the working tree. Failure
to open per-directory .gitattributes with error status other than
ENOENT and ENOTDIR are diagnosed.

"git merge -Xtheirs" did not help content-level merge of binary
files; it should just take their version. Also "*.jpg binary" in
the attributes did not imply they should use the binary ll-merge

Often we consult an in-tree .gitattributes file that exists per
directory. Majority of directories do not usually have such a file,
and it is perfectly fine if we cannot open it because there is no
such file, but we do want to know when there is an I/O or permission
error. Earlier, we made the codepath warn when we fail to open it
for reasons other than ENOENT for that reason.
We however sometimes have to attempt to open the .gitattributes file
from a directory that does not exist in the commit that is currently
checked out. "git pack-objects" wants to know if a path is marked
with "-delta" attributes, and "git archive" wants to know about
export-ignore and export-subst attributes. Both commands may and do
need to ask the attributes system about paths in an arbitrary
commit. "git diff", after removing an entire directory, may want to
know textconv on paths that used to be in that directory.
Make sure we also ignore a failure to open per-directory attributes
file due to ENOTDIR.

The built-in "binary" attribute macro expands to "-diff -text", so
that textual diff is not produced, and the contents will not go
through any CR/LF conversion ever. During a merge, it should also
choose the "binary" low-level merge driver, but it didn't.
Make it expand to "-diff -merge -text".
