The read_tree() function reads trees recursively (via its read_tree_at()
helper). This can cause it to run out of stack space on very deep trees.
Let's teach it about the new core.maxTreeDepth option.
The easiest way to demonstrate this is via "ls-tree -r", which the test
covers. Note that I needed a tree depth of ~30k to trigger a segfault on
my Linux system, not the 4100 used by our "big" test in t6700. However,
that test still tells us what we want: that the default 4096 limit is
enough to prevent segfaults on all platforms. We could bump it, but that
increases the cost of the test setup for little gain.
As an interesting side-note: when I originally wrote this patch about 4
years ago, I needed a depth of ~50k to segfault. But porting it forward,
the number is much lower. Seemingly little things like cf0983213c (hash:
add an algo member to struct object_id, 2021-04-26) take it from 32,722
to 29,080.

The tree_entry_interesting() function takes base_offset, allowing

lurking there, as all callers pass 0 to the parameter.

As can easily be seen from grepping in our sources, we had these uses
of "the_repository" in various library code in cases where the
function in question was already getting a "struct repository *"
argument. Let's use that argument instead.
Out of these changes only the changes to "cache-tree.c",
"commit-reach.c", "shallow.c" and "upload-pack.c" would have cleanly
applied before the migration away from the "repo_*()" wrapper macros
in the preceding commits.
The rest aren't new, as we'd previously implicitly refer to
"the_repository", but it's now more obvious that we were doing the
wrong thing all along, and should have used the parameter instead.
The change to change "get_index_format_default(the_repository)" in
"read-cache.c" to use the "r" variable instead should arguably have
been part of [1], or in the subsequent cleanup in [2]. Let's do it
here, as can be seen from the initial code in [3] it's not important
that we use "the_repository" there, but would prefer to always use the
current repository.
This change excludes the "the_repository" use in "upload-pack.c"'s
upload_pack_advertise(), as the in-flight [4] makes that change.

Simplify the signature of read_tree_recursive() to omit the "base",
"baselen" and "stage" arguments. No callers of it use these parameters
for anything anymore.
The last function to call read_tree_recursive() with a non-"" path was
read_tree_recursive() itself, but that was changed in
ffd31f661d (Reimplement read_tree_recursive() using
tree_entry_interesting(), 2011-03-25).
The last user of the "stage" parameter went away in the last commit,
and even that use was mere boilerplate.
So let's remove those and rename the read_tree_recursive() function to
just read_tree(). We had another read_tree() function that I've
refactored away in preceding commits, since all in-tree users read
trees recursively with a callback we can change the name to signify
that this is the norm.

Rename the static read_tree_1() function to read_tree_at(). This
function works just like read_tree_recursive(), except you provide
your own strbuf.
This step doesn't make much sense now, but in follow-up commits I'll
remove the base/baselen/stage arguments to read_tree_recursive(). At
that point an anticipated in-tree user[1] for the old
read_tree_recursive() couldn't provide a path to start the
traversal.
Let's give them a function to do so with an API that makes more sense
for them, by taking a strbuf we should be able to avoid more casting
and/or reallocations in the future.

14ba97f8 (alloc: allow arbitrary repositories for alloc functions,

However, commit-slab code requires commit->index values to be unique

Let's introduce a static counter variable, `parsed_commits_count` to

When parsing a tree, we read the object ID directly out of the tree
buffer. This is normally fine, but such an object ID cannot be used with
oidcpy, which copies GIT_MAX_RAWSZ bytes, because if we are using SHA-1,
there may not be that many bytes to copy.
Instead, store the object ID in a separate struct member. Since we can
no longer efficiently compute the path length, store that information as
well in struct name_entry. Ensure we only copy the object ID into the
new buffer if the path length is nonzero, as some callers will pass us
an empty path with no object ID following it, and we will not want to
read past the end of the buffer.

In order to support :(attr) when matching pathspec on a tree,
tree_entry_interesting() needs to take an index (because

also makes it clearer what index we fall back to when looking up

For a large tree, the index needs to hold many cache entries
allocated on heap. These cache entries are now allocated out of a
dedicated memory pool to amortize malloc(3) overhead.

mem-pool: only search head block for available space
block alloc: add lifecycle APIs for cache_entry structs
read-cache: teach make_cache_entry to take object_id
read-cache: teach refresh_cache_entry to take istate
It has been observed that the time spent loading an index with a large
number of entries is partly dominated by malloc() calls. This change
is in preparation for using memory pools to reduce the number of
malloc() calls made to allocate cahce entries when loading an index.
Add an API to allocate and discard cache entries, abstracting the
details of managing the memory backing the cache entries. This commit
does actually change how memory is managed - this will be done in a
later commit in the series.
This change makes the distinction between cache entries that are
associated with an index and cache entries that are not associated with
an index. A main use of cache entries is with an index, and we can
optimize the memory management around this. We still have other cases
where a cache entry is not persisted with an index, and so we need to
handle the "transient" use case as well.
To keep the congnitive overhead of managing the cache entries, there
will only be a single discard function. This means there must be enough
information kept with the cache entry so that we know how to discard
them.
A summary of the main functions in the API is:
make_cache_entry: create cache entry for use in an index. Uses specified
parameters to populate cache_entry fields.
make_empty_cache_entry: Create an empty cache entry for use in an index.
Returns cache entry with empty fields.
make_transient_cache_entry: create cache entry that is not used in an
index. Uses specified parameters to populate
cache_entry fields.
make_empty_transient_cache_entry: create cache entry that is not used in
an index. Returns cache entry with
empty fields.
discard_cache_entry: A single function that knows how to discard a cache
entry regardless of how it was allocated.

Using the commit-graph file to walk commit history removes the large
cost of parsing commits during the walk. This exposes a performance
issue: lookup_tree() takes a large portion of the computation time,
even when Git never uses those trees.
In anticipation of lazy-loading these trees, rename the 'tree' member
of struct commit to 'maybe_tree'. This serves two purposes: it hints
at the future role of possibly being NULL even if the commit has a
valid tree, and it allows for unambiguous transformation from simple
member access (i.e. commit->maybe_tree) to method access.
