Michael J Gruber noticed that connection via the git:// protocol no
longer worked after a recent header clean-up. This was caused by
funny interaction of few gotchas. First, a necessary definition
#define DEFAULT_GIT_PORT 9418
was made invisible to a place where
const char *port = STR(DEFAULT_GIT_PORT);
was expecting to turn the integer into "9418" with a clever STR()
macro, and ended up stringifying it to
const char *port = "DEFAULT_GIT_PORT";
without giving any chance to compilers to notice such a mistake.

There has been a push to remove extern from function declarations.
Remove some instances of "extern" for function declarations which are
caught by Coccinelle. Note that Coccinelle has some difficulty with
processing functions with `__attribute__` or varargs so some `extern`
declarations are left behind to be dealt with in a future patch.
This was the Coccinelle patch used:
@@
type T;
identifier f;
@@
- extern
T f(...);
and it was run with:
$ git ls-files \*.{c,h} |
grep -v ^compat/ |
xargs spatch --sp-file contrib/coccinelle/noextern.cocci --in-place
Files under `compat/` are intentionally excluded as some are directly
copied from external sources and we should avoid churning them as much
as possible.

Introduce protocol_v2, a new value for 'enum protocol_version'.
Subsequent patches will fill in the implementation of protocol_v2.

Create protocol.{c,h} and provide functions which future servers and
clients can use to determine which protocol to use or is being used.
Also introduce the 'GIT_PROTOCOL' environment variable which will be
used to communicate a colon separated list of keys with optional values
to a server. Unknown keys and values must be tolerated. This mechanism
is used to communicate which version of the wire protocol a client would
like to use with a server.
