fbc15b13f7 reflog [show]: display sensible -h output
Change the "git reflog show -h" output to show the usage summary
relevant to it, rather than displaying the same output that "git log
-h" would show.

e3c3675801 reflog: convert to parse_options() API
Continue the work started in 33d7bdd645 (builtin/reflog.c: use
parse-options api for expire, delete subcommands, 2022-01-06) and
convert the cmd_reflog() function itself to use the parse_options()
API.

Let's also add a test which would fail if we forgot
PARSE_OPT_NO_INTERNAL_HELP here, as well as making sure that we'll
still pass through "--" by supplying PARSE_OPT_KEEP_DASHDASH. For that
test we need to change "test_commit()" to accept files starting with
"--".

The "git reflog -h" usage will now show the usage for all of the
sub-commands, rather than a terse summary which wasn't
correct (e.g. "git reflog exists" is not a valid command). See my
8757b35d44 (commit-graph: define common usage with a macro,
2021-08-23) for prior art.

57be9c6dee reflog: don't be noisy on empty reflogs
Fix a regression in my daf1d8285e (reflog expire: don't use
lookup_commit_reference_gently(), 2021-12-22), in changing from
lookup_commit_reference_gently() to lookup_commit() we stopped trying
to call deref_tag() and parse_object() on the provided OID, but we
also started returning non-NULL for the null_oid().

As a result we'd emit an error() via mark_reachable() later in this
function as we tried to invoke parse_commit() on it.

db5875aa9f t0000-t3999: detect and signal failure within loop
Failures within `for` and `while` loops can go unnoticed if not detected
and signaled manually since the loop itself does not abort when a
contained command fails, nor will a failure necessarily be detected when
the loop finishes since the loop returns the exit code of the last
command it ran on the final iteration, which may not be the command
which failed. Therefore, detect and signal failures manually within
loops using the idiom `|| return 1` (or `|| exit 1` within subshells).

fe14431526 t1410: mark test as REFFILES
This test takes a lock on the target of a symref, and then verifies that it is

c809798b2a reflog expire --stale-fix: be generous about missing objects
Whenever a user runs `git reflog expire --stale-fix`, the most likely
reason is that their repository is at least _somewhat_ corrupt. Which
means that it is more than just possible that some objects are missing.

If that is the case, that can currently let the command abort through
the phase where it tries to mark all reachable objects.

Instead of adding insult to injury, let's be gentle and continue as best
as we can in such a scenario, simply by ignoring the missing objects and
moving on.

06d531486e t[01]*: adjust the references to the default branch name "main"
Carefully excluding t1309, which sees independent development elsewhere
at the time of writing, we transition above-mentioned tests to the
default branch name `main`. This trick was performed via

	$ (cd t &&
	   sed -i -e 's/master/main/g' -e 's/MASTER/MAIN/g' \
		-e 's/Master/Main/g' -e 's/naster/nain/g' -- t[01]*.sh &&
	   git checkout HEAD -- t1309\*)

Note that t5533 contains a variation of the name `master` (`naster`)
that we rename here, too.

This allows us to define `GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=main`
for those tests.

334afbc76f tests: mark tests relying on the current default for init.defaultBranch
In addition to the manual adjustment to let the `linux-gcc` CI job run
the test suite with `master` and then with `main`, this patch makes sure
that GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME is set in all test scripts
that currently rely on the initial branch name being `master by default.

To determine which test scripts to mark up, the first step was to
force-set the default branch name to `master` in

- all test scripts that contain the keyword `master`,

- t4211, which expects `t/t4211/history.export` with a hard-coded ref to
  initialize the default branch,

- t5560 because it sources `t/t556x_common` which uses `master`,

- t8002 and t8012 because both source `t/annotate-tests.sh` which also
  uses `master`)

This trick was performed by this command:

	$ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/\(test-lib\|lib-\(bash\|cvs\|git-svn\)\|gitweb-lib\)\.sh$/i\
	GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\
	export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\
	' $(git grep -l master t/t[0-9]*.sh) \
	t/t4211*.sh t/t5560*.sh t/t8002*.sh t/t8012*.sh

After that, careful, manual inspection revealed that some of the test
scripts containing the needle `master` do not actually rely on a
specific default branch name: either they mention `master` only in a
comment, or they initialize that branch specificially, or they do not
actually refer to the current default branch. Therefore, the
aforementioned modification was undone in those test scripts thusly:

	$ git checkout HEAD -- \
		t/t0027-auto-crlf.sh t/t0060-path-utils.sh \
		t/t1011-read-tree-sparse-checkout.sh \

		t/t7508-status.sh t/t7606-merge-custom.sh \
		t/t9302-fast-import-unpack-limit.sh

We excluded one set of test scripts in these commands, though: the range
of `git p4` tests. The reason? `git p4` stores the (foreign) remote
branch in the branch called `p4/master`, which is obviously not the
default branch. Manual analysis revealed that only five of these tests
actually require a specific default branch name to pass; They were
modified thusly:

	$ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/lib-git-p4\.sh$/i\
	GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\
	export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\
	' t/t980[0167]*.sh t/t9811*.sh

ff4cb42e77 t1410: make hash size independent
Instead of parsing object IDs using fixed-length shell patterns, use cut
to extract the first two characters of an object ID in addition to the
test helper for object paths. Update another test to look up an
appropriate object ID fragment from the all-zeros object ID instead of
hardcoding the value.

Although the test for parsing reflogs at BUFSIZ boundaries passes, mark
it with the SHA1 prerequisite, as it doesn't currently usefully test
anything when using a hash longer than 20 bytes.

978f430763 reflog tests: assert lack of early exit with expiry="never"
When gc.reflogExpire and gc.reflogExpireUnreachable are set to "never"
and --stale-fix isn't in effect we *could* exit early without
pointlessly looping over all the reflogs.

However, as an earlier change to add a test for the "points nowhere"
warning shows even in such a mode we might want to print out a
warning.

So while it's conceivable to implement this, I don't think it's worth
it. It's going to be too easy to inadvertently add some flag that'll
make the expiry happen anyway, and even with "never" we'd like to see
all the lines we're going to keep.

So let's assert that we're going to loop over all the references even
when this configuration is in effect.

1c5e94f459 tests: use 'test_must_be_empty' instead of 'test_cmp <empty> <out>'
Using 'test_must_be_empty' is shorter and more idiomatic than

  >empty &&
  test_cmp empty out

as it saves the creation of an empty file. Furthermore, sometimes the
expected empty file doesn't have such a descriptive name like 'empty',
and its creation is far away from the place where it's finally used
for comparison (e.g. in 't7600-merge.sh', where two expected empty
files are created in the 'setup' test, but are used only about 500
lines later).

These cases were found by instrumenting 'test_cmp' to error out the
test script when it's used to compare empty files, and then converted
manually.

Note that even after this patch there still remain a lot of cases
where we use 'test_cmp' to check empty files:

  - Sometimes the expected output is not hard-coded in the test, but
    'test_cmp' is used to ensure that two similar git commands produce
    the same output, and that output happens to be empty, e.g. the
    test 'submodule update --merge - ignores --merge for new
    submodules' in 't7406-submodule-update.sh'.

  - Repetitive common tasks, including preparing the expected results
    and running 'test_cmp', are often extracted into a helper
    function, and some of this helper's callsites expect no output.

  - For the same reason as above, the whole 'test_expect_success'
    block is within a helper function, e.g. in 't3070-wildmatch.sh'.

  - Or 'test_cmp' is invoked in a loop, e.g. the test 'cvs update
    (-p)' in 't9400-git-cvsserver-server.sh'.

7687f19e93 t: switch "branch -l" to "branch --create-reflog"
In preparation for deprecating "-l", let's make sure we're

This patch just mechanically converts "branch -l" to "branch

actual "--create-reflog" test, we could actually remove "-l"
entirely from most of these callers. That's because these
days core.logallrefupdates defaults to true in a non-bare

I've left them in place, though, since they serve to

71abeb753f reflog: continue walking the reflog past root commits
If a repository contains more than one root commit, then its HEAD
reflog may contain multiple "creation events", i.e. entries whose
"from" value is the null sha1. Listing such a reflog currently stops
prematurely at the first such entry, even when the reflog still
contains older entries. This can scare users into thinking that their
reflog got truncated after 'git checkout --orphan'.

Continue walking the reflog past such creation events based on the
preceeding reflog entry's "new" value.

The test 'symbolic-ref writes reflog entry' in t1401-symbolic-ref
implicitly relies on the current behavior of the reflog walker to stop
at a root commit and thus to list only the reflog entries that are
relevant for that test. Adjust the test to explicitly specify the
number of relevant reflog entries to be listed.

aecad374ae reflog-walk: don't segfault on non-commit sha1's in the reflog
git reflog (ab)uses the log machinery to display its list of log
entries. To do so it must fake commit parent information for the log
walker.

For refs in refs/heads this is no problem, as they should only ever
point to commits. Tags and other refs however can point to anything,
thus their reflog may contain non-commit objects.

To avoid segfaulting, we check whether reflog entries are commits before
feeding them to the log walker and skip any non-commits. This means that
git reflog output will be incomplete for such refs, but that's one step
up from segfaulting. A more complete solution would be to decouple git
reflog from the log walker machinery.

The Git CodingGuidelines prefer the $(...) construct for command

The backquoted form is the traditional method for command

careful escaping with the backslash character.

d0ab058498 tests: remove some direct access to .git/logs
Alternate refs backends might store reflogs somewhere other than

There are still a few tests which need direct access to reflogs: to

e5e73ff20b for_each_reflog_ent_reverse: fix newlines on block boundaries
When we read a reflog file in reverse, we read whole chunks
of BUFSIZ bytes, then loop over the buffer, parsing any
lines we find. We find the beginning of each line by looking
for the newline from the previous line. If we don't find
one, we know that we are either at the beginning of
the file, or that we have to read another block.

In the latter case, we stuff away what we have into a
strbuf, read another block, and continue our parse. But we
missed one case here. If we did find a newline, and it is at
the beginning of the block, we must also stuff that newline
into the strbuf, as it belongs to the block we are about to
read.

The minimal fix here would be to add this special case to
the conditional that checks whether we found a newline.
But we can make the flow a little clearer by rearranging a
bit: we first handle lines that we are going to show, and
then at the end of each loop, stuff away any leftovers if
necessary. That lets us fold this special-case in with the
more common "we ended in the middle of a line" case.

aae828b911 t1410: fix breakage on case-insensitive filesystems
Two tests recently added to t1410 create branches "a" and
"a/b" to test d/f conflicts on reflogs. Earlier, unrelated
tests in that script create the path "A/B" in the working
tree. There's no conflict on a case-sensitive filesystem,
but on a case-insensitive one, "git log" will complain that
"a/b" is both a revision and a working tree path.

We could fix this by using a "--" to disambiguate, but we
are probably better off using names that are less confusing
to make it more clear that they are unrelated to the working
tree files. This patch turns "a/b" into "one/two".

9233887cce ignore stale directories when checking reflog existence
When we update a ref, we have two rules for whether or not
we actually update the reflog:

  1. If the reflog already exists, we will always append to
     it.

  2. If log_all_ref_updates is set, we will create a new
     reflog file if necessary.

We do the existence check by trying to open the reflog file,
either with or without O_CREAT (depending on log_all_ref_updates).
If it fails, then we check errno to see what happened.

If we were not using O_CREAT and we got ENOENT, the file
doesn't exist, and we return success (there isn't a reflog
already, and we were not told to make a new one).

If we get EISDIR, then there is likely a stale directory
that needs to be removed (e.g., there used to be "foo/bar",
it was deleted, and the directory "foo" was left. Now we
want to create the ref "foo"). If O_CREAT is set, then we
catch this case, try to remove the directory, and retry our
open. So far so good.

But if we get EISDIR and O_CREAT is not set, then we treat
this as any other error, which is not right. Like ENOENT,
EISDIR is an indication that we do not have a reflog, and we
should silently return success (we were not told to create
it). Instead, the current code reports this as an error, and
we fail to update the ref at all.

Note that this is relatively unlikely to happen, as you
would have to have had reflogs turned on, and then later
turned them off (it could also happen due to a bug in fetch,
but that was fixed in the previous commit). However, it's
quite easy to fix: we just need to treat EISDIR like ENOENT
for the non-O_CREAT case, and silently return (note that
this early return means we can also simplify the O_CREAT
case).

Our new tests cover both cases (O_CREAT and non-O_CREAT).
The first one already worked, of course.

482b8f3208 checkout.c: use ref_exists instead of file_exist
Change checkout.c to check if a ref exists instead of checking if a loose ref
file exists when deciding if to delete an orphaned log file. Otherwise, if a
ref only exists as a packed ref without a corresponding loose ref for the
currently checked out branch, we risk that the reflog will be deleted when we
switch to a different branch.

Update the reflog tests to check for this bug.

The following reproduces the bug:
$ git init-db
$ git config core.logallrefupdates true
$ git commit -m Initial --allow-empty

$ git reflog master
    [8561dcb master@{0}: commit (initial): Initial]

$ git branch foo
$ git pack-refs --all
$ find .git/{refs,logs} -type f | grep master

$ git checkout foo
$ find .git/{refs,logs} -type f | grep master

1f553918a8 test-lib: Introduce test_chmod and use it instead of update-index --chmod
This function replaces sequences of 'chmod +x' and 'git update-index
--chmod=+x' in the test suite, whose purpose is to help filesystems
that need core.filemode=false. Two places where only 'chmod +x' was used
we also use this new function.

The function calls 'git update-index --chmod' without checking
core.filemode (unlike some of the call sites did). We do this because the
call sites *expect* that the executable bit ends up in the index (ie. it
is not the purpose of the call sites to *test* whether git treats
'chmod +x' and 'update-index --chmod=+x' correctly). Therefore, on
filesystems with core.filemode=true the 'git update-index --chmod' is a
no-op.

The function uses --add with update-index to help one call site in
t6031-merge-recursive. It makes no difference for the other callers.

25ee9731c1 gc: call "prune --expire 2.weeks.ago" by default
The only reason we did not call "prune" in git-gc was that it is an
inherently dangerous operation: if there is a commit going on, you will
prune loose objects that were just created, and are, in fact, needed by the
commit object just about to be created.

Since it is dangerous, we told users so. That led to many users not even
daring to run it when it was actually safe. Besides, they are users, and
should not have to remember such details as when to call git-gc with
--prune, or to call git-prune directly.

Of course, the consequence was that "git gc --auto" gets triggered much
more often than we would like, since unreferenced loose objects (such as
left-overs from a rebase or a reset --hard) were never pruned.

Alas, git-prune recently learnt the option --expire <minimum-age>, which
makes it a much safer operation. This allows us to call prune from git-gc,
with a grace period of 2 weeks for the unreferenced loose objects (this
value was determined in a discussion on the git list as a safe one).

If you want to override this grace period, just set the config variable
gc.pruneExpire to a different value; an example would be

	[gc]
		pruneExpire = 6.months.ago

or even "never", if you feel really paranoid.

Note that this new behaviour makes "--prune" be a no-op.

While adding a test to t5304-prune.sh (since it really tests the implicit
call to "prune"), also the original test for "prune --expire" was moved
there from t1410-reflog.sh, where it did not belong.

f01913e419 Add "--expire <time>" option to 'git prune'
Earlier, 'git prune' would prune all loose unreachable objects.
This could be quite dangerous, as the objects could be used in
an ongoing operation.

This patch adds a mode to expire only loose, unreachable objects
which are older than a certain time. For example, by

	git prune --expire 14.days

you can prune only those objects which are loose, unreachable
and older than 14 days (and thus probably outdated).

The implementation uses st.st_mtime rather than st.st_ctime,
because it can be tested better, using 'touch -d <time>' (and
omitting the test when the platform does not support that
command line switch).

This reverts commit 9b088c4e39.

Protecting 'mature' objects does not make it any safer. We should
admit that git-prune is inherently unsafe when run in parallel with
other operations without involving unwarranted locking overhead,
and with the latest git, even rebase and reset would not immediately
create crufts anyway.
