A recent update broke "git ls-remote" used outside a repository,
which has been corrected.

In c8aed5e8da (repository: stop setting SHA1 as the default object hash,
2024-05-07), we have stopped setting the default hash algorithm for
`the_repository`. Consequently, code that relies on `the_hash_algo` will
now crash when it hasn't explicitly been initialized, which may be the
case when running outside of a Git repository.
It was reported that git-ls-remote(1) may crash in such a way when using
a remote helper that advertises refspecs. This is because the refspec
announced by the helper will get parsed during capability negotiation.
At that point we haven't yet figured out what object format the remote
uses though, so when run outside of a repository then we will fail.
The course of action is somewhat dubious in the first place. Ideally, we
should only parse object IDs once we have asked the remote helper for
the object format. And if the helper didn't announce the "object-format"
capability, then we should always assume SHA256. But instead, we used to
take either SHA1 if there was no repository, or we used the hash of the
local repository, which is wrong.
Arguably though, crashing hard may not be in the best interest of our
users, either. So while the old behaviour was buggy, let's restore it
for now as a short-term fix. We should eventually revisit, potentially
by deferring the point in time when we parse the refspec until after we
have figured out the remote's object hash.

Users can pass patterns to git-ls-remote(1), which allows them to filter
the list of printed references. We assemble those patterns into an array
and prefix them with "*/", but never free either the array nor the
allocated strings.
Refactor the code to use a `struct strvec` instead of manually tracking
the strings in an array. Like this, we can easily use `strvec_clear()`
to release both the vector and the contained string for us, plugging the
leak.

Now that the url/pushurl fields of "struct remote" own their strings, we
can switch from bare arrays to strvecs. This has a few advantages:
- push/clear are now one-liners
- likewise the free+assigns in alias_all_urls() can use
strvec_replace()
- we now use size_t for storage, avoiding possible overflow
- this will enable some further cleanups in future patches
There's quite a bit of fallout in the code that reads these fields, as
it tends to access these arrays directly. But it's mostly a mechanical
replacement of "url_nr" with "url.nr", and "url[i]" with "url.v[i]",
with a few variations (e.g. "*url" could become "*url.v", but I used
"url.v[0]" for consistency).

We call the tips of branches "heads", but this command calls the
option to show only branches "--heads", which confuses the branches
themselves and the tips of branches.
Straighten the terminology by introducing "--branches" option that
limits the output to branches, and deprecate "--heads" option used
that way.
We do not plan to remove "--heads" or "-h" yet; we may want to do so
at Git 3.0, in which case, we may need to start advertising upcoming
removal with an extra warning when they are used.

When '--no-sort' is passed to 'for-each-ref', 'tag', and 'branch', the
printed refs are still sorted by ascending refname. Change the handling of
sort options in these commands so that '--no-sort' to truly disables
sorting.
'--no-sort' does not disable sorting in these commands is because their
option parsing does not distinguish between "the absence of '--sort'"
(and/or values for tag.sort & branch.sort) and '--no-sort'. Both result in
an empty 'sorting_options' string list, which is parsed by
'ref_sorting_options()' to create the 'struct ref_sorting *' for the
command. If the string list is empty, 'ref_sorting_options()' interprets
that as "the absence of '--sort'" and returns the default ref sorting
structure (equivalent to "refname" sort).
To handle '--no-sort' properly while preserving the "refname" sort in the
"absence of --sort'" case, first explicitly add "refname" to the string list
*before* parsing options. This alone doesn't actually change any behavior,
since 'compare_refs()' already falls back on comparing refnames if two refs
are equal w.r.t all other sort keys.
Now that the string list is populated by default, '--no-sort' is the only
way to empty the 'sorting_options' string list. Update
'ref_sorting_options()' to return a NULL 'struct ref_sorting *' if the
string list is empty, and add a condition to 'ref_array_sort()' to skip the
sort altogether if the sort structure is NULL. Note that other functions
using 'struct ref_sorting *' do not need any changes because they already
ignore NULL values.
Finally, remove the condition around sorting in 'ls-remote', since it's no
longer necessary. Unlike 'for-each-ref' et. al., it does *not* do any
sorting by default. This default is preserved by simply leaving its sort key
string list empty before parsing options; if no additional sort keys are
set, 'struct ref_sorting *' is NULL and sorting is skipped.

The include of wildmatch.h in git-compat-util.h was added in cebcab189a
(Makefile: add USE_WILDMATCH to use wildmatch as fnmatch, 2013-01-01) as
a way to be able to compile-time force any calls to fnmatch() to instead
invoke wildmatch(). The defines and inline function were removed in
70a8fc999d (stop using fnmatch (either native or compat), 2014-02-15),
and this include in git-compat-util.h has been unnecessary ever since.
Remove the include from git-compat-util.h, but add it to the .c files
that had omitted the direct #include they needed.

Since this header showed up in some places besides just #include
statements, update/clean-up/remove those other places as well.
Note that compat/fsmonitor/fsm-path-utils-darwin.c previously got
away with violating the rule that all files must start with an include
of git-compat-util.h (or a short-list of alternate headers that happen
to include it first). This change exposed the violation and caused it
to stop building correctly; fix it by having it include
git-compat-util.h first, as per policy.

The builtins 'ls-remote', 'pack-objects', 'receive-pack', 'reflog' and
'send-pack' use parse_options(), but their source files don't directly
include 'parse-options.h'. Furthermore, the source files
'diagnose.c', 'list-objects-filter-options.c', 'remote.c' and
'send-pack.c' define option parsing callback functions, while
'revision.c' defines an option parsing helper function, and thus need
access to various fields in 'struct option' and 'struct
parse_opt_ctx_t', but they don't directly include 'parse-options.h'
either. They all can still be built, of course, because they include
one of the header files that does include 'parse-options.h' (though
unnecessarily, see the next commit).
Add those missing includes to these files, as our general rule is that
"a C file must directly include the header files that declare the
functions and the types it uses".

We document that you can specify "refs" to ls-remote, but we don't
explain any further than that they are "matched" as patterns. Since this
can be interpreted in a lot of ways, let's clarify that they are
tail-matched globs.
Likewise, let's use the word "patterns" to refer to them consistently,
rather than "refs" (both here and in the quick "-h" help), and mention
more explicitly that only one pattern needs to be matched (though there
is also an example already that shows this in action).

Fix various issues of SYNOPSIS and -h output syntax where:
* Options such as --force were missing entirely
* ...or the short option, such as -f
* We said "opts" or "options", but could instead enumerate
the (small) set of supported options
* Options that were missing entirely (ls-remote's --sort=<key>)
As we can specify "--sort" multiple times (it's backed by a
string-list" it should really be "[(--sort=<key>)...]", which is
what "git for-each-ref" lists it as, but let's leave that issue for
a subsequent cleanup, and stop at making these consistent. Other
"ref-filter.h" users share the same issue, e.g. "git-branch.txt".
* For "verify-tag" and "verify-commit" we were missing the "--raw"
option.

Fix a memory leak in codepaths that use the "struct
transport_ls_refs_options" API. Since the introduction of the struct
in 39835409d1 (connect, transport: encapsulate arg in struct,
2021-02-05) the caller has been responsible for freeing it.
That commit in turn migrated code originally added in
402c47d939 (clone: send ref-prefixes when using protocol v2,
2018-07-20) and b4be74105f (ls-remote: pass ref prefixes when
requesting a remote's refs, 2018-03-15). Only some of those codepaths
were releasing the allocated resources of the struct, now all of them
will.
Mark the "t/t5511-refspec.sh" test as passing when git is compiled
with SANITIZE=leak. They'll now be listed as running under the
"GIT_TEST_PASSING_SANITIZE_LEAK=true" test mode (the "linux-leaks" CI
target). Previously 24/47 tests would fail.

The for-each-ref family of commands invoke parsers immediately when
it sees each --sort=<atom> option, and die before even seeing the
other options on the command line when the <atom> is unrecognised.
Instead, accumulate them in a string list, and have them parsed into
a ref_sorting structure after the command line parsing is done. As
a consequence, "git branch --sort=bogus -h" used to fail to give the
brief help, which arguably may have been a feature, now does so,
which is more consistent with how other options work.
The patch is smaller than the actual extent of the "damage" to the
codebase, thanks to the fact that the original code consistently
used OPT_REF_SORT() macro to handle command line options. We only
needed to replace the variable used for the list, and implementation
of the callback function used in the macro.
The old rule was for the users of the API to:
- Declare ref_sorting and ref_sorting_tail variables;
- OPT_REF_SORT() macro will instantiate ref_sorting instance (which
may barf and die) and append it to the tail;
- Append to the tail each ref_sorting read from the configuration
by parsing in the config callback (which may barf and die);
- See if ref_sorting is null and use ref_sorting_default() instead.
Now the rule is not all that different but is simpler:
- Declare ref_sorting_options string list.
- OPT_REF_SORT() macro will append it to the string list;
- Append to the string list the sort key read from the
configuration;
- call ref_sorting_options() to turn the string list to ref_sorting
structure (which also deals with the default value).
As side effects, this change also cleans up a few issues:
- 95be717c (parse_opt_ref_sorting: always use with NONEG flag,
2019-03-20) muses that "git for-each-ref --no-sort" should simply
clear the sort keys accumulated so far; it now does.
- The implementation detail of "struct ref_sorting" and the helper
function parse_ref_sorting() can now be private to the ref-filter
API implementation.
- If you set branch.sort to a bogus value, the any "git branch"
invocation, not only the listing mode, would abort with the
original code; now it doesn't

In preparation for having continued usage lines properly aligned in
"git <cmd> -h" output, let's have the "[" on the second such lines
align with the "[" on the first line.
In some cases this makes the output worse, because e.g. the "git
ls-remote -h" output had been aligned to account for the extra
whitespace that the usage_with_options_internal() function in
parse-options.c would add.
In other cases such as builtin/stash.c (not changed here), we were
aligned in the C strings, but since that didn't account for the extra
padding in usage_with_options_internal() it would come out looking
misaligned, e.g. code like this:

This makes the output worse temporarily, but in a subsequent change
I'll improve the usage_with_options_internal() to take this into
account, at which point all of the strings being changed here will
emit prettier output.

transport_get_remote_refs() can populate the transport struct's
remote_refs. transport_disconnect() is already responsible for most of
transport's cleanup - therefore we also take care of freeing remote_refs
there.
There are 2 locations where transport_disconnect() is called before
we're done using the returned remote_refs. This patch changes those
callsites to only call transport_disconnect() after the returned refs
are no longer being used - which is necessary to safely be able to
free remote_refs during transport_disconnect().
This commit fixes the following leak which was found while running
t0000, but is expected to also fix the same pattern of leak in all
locations that use transport_get_remote_refs():

In a future patch we plan to return the name of an unborn current branch
from deep in the callchain to a caller via a new pointer parameter that
points at a variable in the caller when the caller calls
get_remote_refs() and transport_get_remote_refs().
In preparation for that, encapsulate the existing ref_prefixes
parameter into a struct. The aforementioned unborn current branch will
go into this new struct in the future patch.

We UNLEAK() the "sorting" list created by parsing command-line options
(which is essentially used until the program exits). But we do so right
before leaving the cmd_ls_remote() function, which means we have to hit
all of the exits. But the point of UNLEAK() is that it's an annotation
which doesn't impact the variable itself. We can mark it as soon as
we're done writing its value, and then we only have to do so once.
This gives us a minor code reduction, and serves as a better example of
how UNLEAK() can be used.

We eventually want to drop the argv_array name and just use strvec
consistently. There's no particular reason we have to do it all at once,
or care about interactions between converted and unconverted bits.
Because of our preprocessor compat layer, the names are interchangeable
to the compiler (so even a definition and declaration using different
names is OK).
This patch converts all of the files in builtin/ to keep the diff to a
manageable size.
The conversion was done purely mechanically with:

and then selectively staging files with "git add builtin/". We'll deal

ls-remote may or may not operate within a repository, and as such will
not have been initialized with the repository's hash algorithm. Even if
it were, the remote side could be using a different algorithm and we
would still want to display those refs properly. Find the hash
algorithm used by the remote side by querying the transport object and
set our hash algorithm accordingly.
Without this change, if the remote side is using SHA-256, we truncate
the refs to 40 hex characters, since that's the length of the default
hash algorithm (SHA-1).
Note that technically this is not a correct setting of the repository
hash algorithm since, if we are in a repository, it might be one of a
different hash algorithm from the remote side. However, our current
code paths don't handle multiple algorithms and won't for some time, so
this is the best we can do. We rely on the fact that ls-remote never
modifies the current repository, which is a reasonable assumption to
make.

The "--sort" parameter of for-each-ref, etc, does not handle negation,
and instead returns an error to the parse-options code. But neither
piece of code prints anything for the user, which may leave them
confused:
$ git for-each-ref --no-sort
$ echo $?
129
As the comment in the callback function notes, this probably should
clear the list, which would make it consistent with other list-like
options (i.e., anything that uses OPT_STRING_LIST currently).
Unfortunately that's a bit tricky due to the way the ref-filter code
works. But in the meantime, let's at least make the error a little less
confusing:
- switch to using PARSE_OPT_NONEG in the option definition, which will
cause the options code to produce a useful message
- since this was cut-and-pasted to four different spots, let's define
a single OPT_REF_SORT() macro that we can use everywhere
- the callback can use BUG_ON_OPT_NEG() to make sure the correct flags
are used (incidentally, this also satisfies -Wunused-parameters,
since we're now looking at "unset")
- expand the comment into a NEEDSWORK to make it clear that the
direction is right, but the details need to be worked out

"git ls-remote $there foo" was broken by recent update for the
protocol v2 and stopped showing refs that match 'foo' that are not
refs/{heads,tags}/foo, which has been fixed.

Unlike its arbitrary text patterns, the --heads and --tags
options to ls-remote are true prefixes. We can pass this
information to the transport code. If the v2 protocol is in
use, that will reduce the size of the ref advertisement.
Note that the test added here succeeds both before and after
the patch. This is an optimization, not a bug-fix; it's just
making sure we didn't break anything.

Since b4be74105f (ls-remote: pass ref prefixes when requesting a
remote's refs, 2018-03-15), "ls-remote foo" will pass "refs/heads/foo",
"refs/tags/foo", etc to the transport code in an attempt to let the
other side reduce the size of its advertisement.
Unfortunately this is not correct, as ls-remote patterns do not follow
the usual ref lookup rules, and are in fact tail-matched. So we could
find "refs/heads/foo" or "refs/heads/a/much/deeper/foo" or even
"refs/another/hierarchy/foo".
Since we can't pass a prefix and there's not yet a v2 extension for
matching wildcards, we must disable this feature to keep the same
behavior as v1.

Teach ls-remote to optionally accept server options by specifying them
on the cmdline via '-o' or '--server-option'. These server options are
sent to the remote end when querying for the remote end's refs using
protocol version 2.
If communicating using a protocol other than v2 the provided options are
ignored and not sent to the remote end.

Create a '--sort' option for ls-remote, based on the one from
for-each-ref. This e.g. allows ref names to be sorted by version
semantics, so that v1.2 is sorted before v1.10.

Construct an argv_array of ref prefixes based on the patterns supplied
via the command line and pass them to 'transport_get_remote_refs()' to
be used when communicating protocol v2 so that the server can limit the
ref advertisement based on those prefixes.
