There are two backends available for rebasing, viz, the am and the
interactive. Naturally, there shall be some features that are
implemented in one but not in the other. One such flag is
--ignore-whitespace which indicates merge mechanism to treat lines
with only whitespace changes as unchanged. Wire the interactive
rebase to also understand the --ignore-whitespace flag by
translating it to -Xignore-space-change.

"git rebase --autostash <upstream> <branch>", when <branch> is
different from the current branch, incorrectly moved the tip of the
current branch, which has been corrected.

A common scenario is if a user is working on a topic branch and they
wish to make some changes to intermediate commits or autosquash, they
would run something such as
git rebase -i --onto master... master
in order to preserve the merge base. This is useful when contributing a
patch series to the Git mailing list, one often starts on top of the
current 'master'. While developing the patches, 'master' is also
developed further and it is sometimes not the best idea to keep rebasing
on top of 'master', but to keep the base commit as-is.
In addition to this, a user wishing to test individual commits in a
topic branch without changing anything may run
git rebase -x ./test.sh master... master
Since rebasing onto the merge base of the branch and the upstream is
such a common case, introduce the --keep-base option as a shortcut.
This allows us to rewrite the above as
git rebase -i --keep-base master
and
git rebase -x ./test.sh --keep-base master
respectively.
Add tests to ensure --keep-base works correctly in the normal case and
fails when there are multiple merge bases, both in regular and
interactive mode. Also, test to make sure conflicting options cause
rebase to fail. While we're adding test cases, add a missing
set_fake_editor call to 'rebase -i --onto master...side'.
While we're documenting the --keep-base option, change an instance of
"merge-base" to "merge base", which is the consistent spelling.

Before, when we rebased with a --fork-point invocation where the
fork-point wasn't empty, we would be setting options.restrict_revision.
The fast-forward logic would automatically declare that the rebase was
not fast-forwardable if it was set. However, this was painting with a
very broad brush.
Refine the logic so that we can fast-forward in the case where the
restricted revision is equal to the merge base, since we stop rebasing
at the merge base anyway.

Before, when we had the following graph,

running 'git rebase --onto master... master side' would result in D
being always rebased, no matter what. However, the desired behavior is
that rebase should notice that this is fast-forwardable and do that
instead.
Add detection to `can_fast_forward` so that this case can be detected
and a fast-forward will be performed. First of all, rewrite the function
to use gotos which simplifies the logic. Next, since the
options.upstream &&
!oidcmp(&options.upstream->object.oid, &options.onto->object.oid)
conditions were removed in `cmd_rebase`, we reintroduce a substitute in
`can_fast_forward`. In particular, checking the merge bases of
`upstream` and `head` fixes a failing case in t3416.
The abbreviated graph for t3416 is as follows:

and the failing command was
git rebase --onto master...topic F topic
Before, Git would see that there was one merge base (C), and the merge
and onto were the same so it would incorrectly return 1, indicating that
we could fast-forward. This would cause the rebased graph to be 'ABCFG'
when we were expecting 'ABCG'.
With the additional logic, we detect that upstream and head's merge base
is F. Since onto isn't F, it means we're not rebasing the full set of
commits from master..topic. Since we're excluding some commits, a
fast-forward cannot be performed and so we correctly return 0.
Add '-f' to test cases that failed as a result of this change because
they were not expecting a fast-forward so that a rebase is forced.

Before, can_fast_forward was written with an if-else statement. However,
in the future, we may be adding more termination cases which would lead
to deeply nested if statements.
Refactor to use a goto tower so that future cases can be easily
inserted.

When rebasing a complete commit history onto a given commit, it is
pretty obvious that the root commits should be rebased on top of said
given commit.
To test this, let's kill two birds with one stone and add a test case to
t3427-rebase-subtree.sh that not only demonstrates that this works, but
also that `git rebase -r` works with merge strategies now.

We already support merge strategies in the sequencer, but only for
`pick` commands.
With this commit, we now also support them in `merge` commands. The
approach is simple: if any merge strategy option is specified, or if any
merge strategy other than `recursive` is specified, we simply spawn the
`git merge` command. Otherwise, we handle the merge in-process just as
before.

The only remaining scripted part of `git rebase` is the
`--preserve-merges` backend. Meaning: there is little reason to keep the
"library of common rebase functions" as a separate file.
While moving the functions to `git-rebase--preserve-merges.sh`, we also
drop the `move_to_original_branch` function that is no longer used.

Since 21853626ea (built-in rebase: call `git am` directly, 2019-01-18),
the built-in rebase already uses the built-in `git am` directly.
Now that d03ebd411c (rebase: remove the rebase.useBuiltin setting,
2019-03-18) even removed the scripted rebase, there is no longer any
user of `git-rebase--am.sh`, so let's just remove it.

The `exec` command is specific to the interactive backend, therefore it
does not make sense for non-interactive rebases to heed that config
setting.
We still want to error out if a non-interactive rebase is started with
`--reschedule-failed-exec`, of course.

The close_all_packs() method is now responsible for more than just pack-files.
It also closes the commit-graph and the multi-pack-index. Rename the function

In bff014dac7 (builtin rebase: support the `verbose` and `diffstat`
options, 2018-09-04), we added a line that wanted to remove the
`REBASE_DIFFSTAT` bit from the flags, but it used an incorrect negation.

When `rebase -r` finishes it removes any refs under refs/rewritten that
it has created. However if the user aborts or quits the rebase refs are
not removed. This can cause problems for future rebases. For example I
recently wanted to merge a updated version of a topic branch into an
integration branch so ran `rebase -ir` and removed the picks and label
for the topic branch from the todo list so that
merge -C <old-merge> topic
would pick up the new version of topic. Unfortunately
refs/rewritten/topic already existed from a previous rebase that had
been aborted so the rebase just used the old topic, not the new one.
The logic for the non-interactive quit case is changed to ensure
`buf` is always freed.

If rebase --quit cannot remove the state directory then it dies. However
when rebase finishes normally or the user runs rebase --abort any errors
that occur when removing the state directory are ignored. That is fixed
by this commit.
All of the callers of finish_rebase() except the code
that handles --abort are careful to make sure they get a postive return
value, do the same for --abort.

When the builtin rebase starts an interactive rebase it parses the
options and then repackages them and forks
`rebase--interactive`. Separate the option parsing in
cmd_rebase__interactive() from the business logic to allow interactive
rebases can be run without forking `rebase__interactive` by calling
run_rebase_interactive() directly.
Starting interactive rebases without forking makes it easy to debug
the sequencer without worrying about attaching to child
processes. Ævar has also reported that some of the rebase perf tests
are 30% faster [1].
This patch also makes it easy to remove cmd_rebase__interactive() in
the future when git-legacy-rebase.sh and
git-rebase--preserve-merges.sh are retired.

the current action. Change to using a common enum so the values are the
same when we change `rebase -i` to avoid forking `rebase--interactive`.

This is in preparation for using `struct rebase_options` when parsing
options in cmd_rebase__interactive(). Using a string for onto,
restrict_revision and upstream, was a hangover from the scripted version
of rebase. The functions that use these variables are updated to take a
`struct commit`.

As we have a macro for this it makes sense to use it. Having
cmd_rebase() and cmd_rebase__interactive() use the same values for

After a successful switch, if a merge, cherry-pick or revert is ongoing,
it is canceled. This behavior has been with us from the very early
beginning, soon after git-merge was created but never actually
documented [1]. It may be a good idea to be transparent and tell the
user if some operation is canceled.
I consider this a better way of telling the user than just adding a
sentence or two in git-checkout.txt, which will be mostly ignored
anyway.
PS. Originally I wanted to print more details like
warning: cancelling an in-progress merge from <SHA-1>
which may allow some level of undo if the user wants to. But that seems
a lot more work. Perhaps it can be improved later if people still want
that.
[1] ... and I will try not to argue whether it is a sensible behavior.

"git rebase" that was reimplemented in C did not set ORIG_HEAD
correctly, which has been corrected.

Remove the rebase.useBuiltin setting, which was added as an escape
hatch to disable the builtin version of rebase first released with Git
2.20.
See [1] for the initial implementation of rebase.useBuiltin, and [2]
and [3] for the documentation and corresponding
GIT_TEST_REBASE_USE_BUILTIN option.
Carrying the legacy version is a maintenance burden as seen in
7e097e27d3 ("legacy-rebase: backport -C<n> and --whitespace=<option>
checks", 2018-11-20) and 9aea5e9286 ("rebase: fix regression in
rebase.useBuiltin=false test mode", 2019-02-13). Since the built-in
version has been shown to be stable enough let's remove the legacy
version.
As noted in [3] having use_builtin_rebase() shell out to get its
config doesn't make any sense anymore, that was done for the purposes
of spawning the legacy rebase without having modified any global
state. Let's instead handle this case in rebase_config().
There's still a bunch of references to git-legacy-rebase in po/*.po,
but those will be dealt with in time by the i18n effort.
Even though this configuration variable only existed two releases
let's not entirely delete the entry from the docs, but note its
absence. Individual versions of git tend to be around for a while due
to distro packaging timelines, so e.g. if we're "lucky" a given
version like 2.21 might be installed on say OSX for half a decade.
That'll mean some people probably setting this in config, and then
when they later wonder if it's needed they can Google search the
config option name or check it in git-config. It also allows us to
refer to the docs from the warning for details.

Technically, the scripted version set ORIG_HEAD only in two spots (which
really could have been one, because it called `git checkout $onto^0` to
start the rebase and also if it could take a shortcut, and in both cases
it called `git update-ref $orig_head`).
Practically, it *implicitly* reset ORIG_HEAD whenever `git reset --hard`
was called.
However, what we really want is that it is set exactly once, at the
beginning of the rebase.
So let's do that.

In the case that the rebase boils down to a fast-forward, the built-in
rebase reset the working tree twice: once to start the rebase at `onto`,
then realizing that the original (pre-rebase) HEAD was an ancestor and
we basically already fast-forwarded to the post-rebase HEAD,
`reset_head()` was called to update the original ref and to point HEAD
back to it.
That second `reset_head()` call does not need to touch the working tree,
though, as it does not change the actual tip commit (and therefore the
working tree should stay unchanged anyway): only the ref needs to be
updated (because the rebase detached the HEAD, and we want to go back to
the branch on which the rebase was started).
But that second `reset_head()` was called without the flag to leave the
working tree alone (the reason: when that call was introduced, that flag
was not yet even thought of). Let's avoid that unnecessary work by
passing that flag.

This patch was contributed only as a tentative "we could introduce a
convenient short option if we do not want to change the default behavior
in the long run" patch, opening the discussion whether other people
agree with deprecating the current behavior in favor of the rescheduling
behavior.
But the consensus on the Git mailing list was that it would make sense
to show a warning in the near future, and flip the default
rebase.rescheduleFailedExec to reschedule failed `exec` commands by

When GIT_SEQUENCE_EDITOR is set, the command was incorrectly
started when modes of "git rebase" that implicitly uses the
machinery for the interactive rebase are run, which has been
corrected.

If the user gives an empty argument to --exec then git creates a todo
list that it cannot parse. The rebase starts to run before erroring out
with
error: missing arguments for exec
error: invalid line 2: exec
You can fix this with 'git rebase --edit-todo' and then run 'git rebase --continue'.
Or you can abort the rebase with 'git rebase --abort'.
Instead check for empty commands before starting the rebase.
Also check that the command does not contain any newlines as the
todo-list format is unable to cope with multiline commands. Note that
this changes the behavior, before this change one could do
git rebase --exec='echo one
exec echo two'
and it would insert two exec lines in the todo list, now it will error
out.

and the command used to call the post-checkout hook, but the
reimplementation stopped doing so, which is getting fixed.

so they are updated to work with the new regime.

While the scripted `git rebase` still has to rely on the
`git-rebase--am.sh` script to implement the glue between the `rebase`
and the `am` commands, we can go a more direct route in the built-in
rebase and avoid using a shell script altogether.
This patch represents a straight-forward port of `git-rebase--am.sh` to
C, along with the glue code to call it directly from within
`builtin/rebase.c`.
This reduces the chances of Git for Windows running into trouble due to
problems with the POSIX emulation layer (known as "MSYS2 runtime",
itself a derivative of the Cygwin runtime): when no shell script is
called, the POSIX emulation layer is avoided altogether.
Note: we pass an empty action to `reset_head()` here when moving back to
the original branch, as no other action is applicable, really. This
parameter is used to initialize `unpack_trees()`' messages.

read_index() shares the same problem as hold_locked_index(): it
assumes $GIT_DIR/index. Move all call sites to repo_read_index()
instead. read_index_preload() and read_index_unmerged() are also
killed as a consequence.

As part of an ongoing effort to make rebase have more uniform behavior,
modify the merge backend to behave like the interactive one, by
re-implementing it on top of the latter.
Interactive rebases are implemented in terms of cherry-pick rather than
the merge-recursive builtin, but cherry-pick also calls into the
recursive merge machinery by default and can accept special merge
strategies and/or special strategy options. As such, there really is
not any need for having both git-rebase--merge and
git-rebase--interactive anymore. Delete git-rebase--merge.sh and
instead implement it in builtin/rebase.c.
This results in a few deliberate but small user-visible changes:
* The progress output is modified (see t3406 and t3420 for examples)
* A few known test failures are now fixed (see t3421)
* bash-prompt during a rebase --merge is now REBASE-i instead of
REBASE-m. Reason: The prompt is a reflection of the backend in use;
this allows users to report an issue to the git mailing list with
the appropriate backend information, and allows advanced users to
know where to search for relevant control files. (see t9903)
testcase modification notes:
t3406: --interactive and --merge had slightly different progress output
while running; adjust a test to match the new expectation
t3420: these test precise output while running, but rebase--am,
rebase--merge, and rebase--interactive all were built on very
different commands (am, merge-recursive, cherry-pick), so the
tests expected different output for each type. Now we expect
--merge and --interactive to have the same output.
t3421: --interactive fixes some bugs in --merge! Wahoo!
t9903: --merge uses the interactive backend so the prompt expected is
now REBASE-i.

While 'quiet' and 'interactive' may sound like antonyms, the interactive
machinery actually has logic that implements several
interactive_rebase=implied cases (--exec, --keep-empty, --rebase-merges)
which won't pop up an editor. The rewrite of interactive rebase in C
added a quiet option, though it only turns stats off. Since we want to
make the interactive machinery also take over for git-rebase--merge, it
should fully implement the --quiet option.
git-rebase--interactive was already somewhat quieter than
git-rebase--merge and git-rebase--am, possibly because cherry-pick has
just traditionally been quieter. As such, we only drop a few
informational messages -- "Rebasing (n/m)" and "Successfully rebased..."
Also, for simplicity, remove the differences in how quiet and verbose
options were recorded. Having one be signalled by the presence of a
"verbose" file in the state_dir, while the other was signalled by the
contents of a "quiet" file was just weirdly inconsistent. (This
inconsistency pre-dated the rewrite into C.) Make them consistent by
having them both key off the presence of the file.

In commit f57696802c ("rebase: really just passthru the `git am`
options", 2018-11-14), the handling of `git am` options was simplified
dramatically (and an option parsing bug was fixed), but it introduced
a small regression in the error message shown when options only
understood by separate backends were used:
$ git rebase --keep --ignore-whitespace
fatal: cannot combine interactive options (--interactive, --exec,
--rebase-merges, --preserve-merges, --keep-empty, --root + --onto) with
am options (.git/rebase-apply/applying)
$ git rebase --merge --ignore-whitespace
fatal: cannot combine merge options (--merge, --strategy,
--strategy-option) with am options (.git/rebase-apply/applying)
Note that in both cases, the list of "am options" is
".git/rebase-apply/applying", which makes no sense. Since the lists of
backend-specific options is documented pretty thoroughly in the rebase
man page (in the "Incompatible Options" section, with multiple links
throughout the document), and since I expect this list to change over
time, just simplify the error message.

The conversion of the script version of rebase took messages that were
prefixed with "error:" and passed them along to die(), which adds a
"fatal:" prefix, thus resulting in messages of the form:
fatal: error: cannot combine...
which seems redundant. Remove the "error:" prefix from the builtin
version of rebase, and change the prefix from "error:" to "fatal:" in
the legacy script to match.

It would be cumbersome to type out that option all the time, so let's
offer the convenience of a config setting: rebase.rescheduleFailedExec.
Besides, this opens the door to changing the default in a future version
of Git: it does make some sense to reschedule failed `exec` commands by
default (and if we could go back in time when the `exec` command was
invented, we probably would change that default right from the start).

A common use case for the `--exec` option is to verify that each commit
in a topic branch compiles cleanly, via `git rebase -x make <base>`.
However, when an `exec` in such a rebase fails, it is not re-scheduled,
which in this instance is not particularly helpful.
Let's offer a flag to reschedule failed `exec` commands.

"git rebase --stat" to transplant a piece of history onto a totally
unrelated history were not working before and silently showed wrong
result. With the recent reimplementation in C, it started to instead
die with an error message, as the original logic was not prepared
to cope with this case. This has now been fixed.

When rebasing to a commit history that has no common commits with the
current branch, there is no merge base. In diffstat mode, this means
that we cannot compare to the merge base, but we have to compare to the
empty tree instead.
Also, if running in verbose diffstat mode, we should not output
Changes from <merge-base> to <onto>
as that does not make sense without any merge base.
Note: neither scripted nor built-in versoin of `git rebase` were
prepared for this situation well. We use this opportunity not only to
fix the bug(s), but also to make both versions' output consistent in
this instance. And add a regression test to keep this working in all
eternity.

The scripted version of "rebase" honored the `GIT_REFLOG_ACTION`,
and some automation scripts expected the reflog entries to be
prefixed with "rebase -i", not "rebase", after running "rebase -i".
This regressed in the reimplementation in C.
Fix that, and add a regression test, both with `GIT_REFLOG_ACTION`
set and unset.
Note: the reflog message for "rebase finished" did *not* honor
GIT_REFLOG_ACTION, and as we are very late in the v2.20.0-rcN phase,
we leave that bug for later (as it seems that that bug has been with
us from the very beginning).

It is a good idea to error out early upon seeing, say, `-Cbad`, rather
than starting the rebase only to have the `--am` backend complain later.
Let's do this.
The only options accepting parameters which we pass through to `git am`
(which may, or may not, forward them to `git apply`) are `-C` and
`--whitespace`. The other options we pass through do not accept
parameters, so we do not have to validate them here.

Currently, we parse the options intended for `git am` as if we wanted to
handle them in `git rebase`, and then reconstruct them painstakingly to
define the `git_am_opt` variable.
However, there is a much better way (that I was unaware of, at the time
when I mentored Pratik to implement these options): OPT_PASSTHRU_ARGV.
It is intended for exactly this use case, where command-line options
want to be parsed into a separate `argv_array`.
Let's use this feature.
Incidentally, this also allows us to address a bug discovered by Phillip
Wood, where the built-in rebase failed to understand that the `-C`
option takes an optional argument.

When we converted a `git checkout -q $onto^0` call to use
`reset_head()`, we inadvertently incurred a change from a twoway_merge
to a oneway_merge, as if we wanted a `git reset --hard` instead.
This has performance ramifications under certain, though, as the
oneway_merge needs to lstat() every single index entry whereas
twoway_merge does not.
So let's go back to the old behavior.

Currently, we only accept the flag indicating whether the HEAD should be
detached not. In the next commit, we want to introduce another flag: to
toggle between emulating `reset --hard` vs `checkout -q`.

The scripted version of the rebase used to execute `git reset --hard`
when skipping or aborting. When we ported this to C, we did update the
worktree and some reflogs, but we failed to imitate `git reset --hard`'s
behavior regarding files in .git/ such as MERGE_HEAD.
Let's address this oversight.

This case is more interesting than other boring "remove the_repo"
commits because while we need access to the object database, we cannot
simply use r->index because unpack-trees.c can operate on a temporary
index, not $GIT_DIR/index. Ideally we should be able to pass an object
database to lookup_tree() but that ship has sailed.

When we converted a `git reset --hard` call in the original Unix shell
script to built-in code, we asked to reset the worktree and the index
and explicitly *not* to detach the HEAD. By mistake, though, we still
did. Let's fix this.

When we define a parse-options callback, the flags we put in the option
struct must match what the callback expects. For example, a callback
which does not handle the "unset" parameter should only be used with
PARSE_OPT_NONEG. But since the callback and the option struct are not
defined next to each other, it's easy to get this wrong (as earlier
patches in this series show).
Fortunately, the compiler can help us here: compiling with
-Wunused-parameters can show us which callbacks ignore their "unset"
parameters (and likewise, ones that ignore "arg" expect to be triggered
with PARSE_OPT_NOARG).
But after we've inspected a callback and determined that all of its
callers use the right flags, what do we do next? We'd like to silence
the compiler warning, but do so in a way that will catch any wrong calls
in the future.
We can do that by actually checking those variables and asserting that
they match our expectations. Because this is such a common pattern,
we'll introduce some helper macros. The resulting messages aren't
as descriptive as we could make them, but the file/line information from
BUG() is enough to identify the problem (and anyway, the point is that
these should never be seen).
Each of the annotated callbacks in this patch triggers
-Wunused-parameters, and was manually inspected to make sure all callers
use the correct options (so none of these BUGs should be triggerable).

Since we cannot stash dirty submodules, there is no use in requiring
them to be clean (or stash them when they are not).
This brings the built-in rebase in line with the previous, scripted
version, which also did not care about dirty submodules (but it was

When `git stash apply <argument>` sees an argument that consists only of
digits, it tries to be smart and interpret it as `stash@{<number>}`.
Unfortunately, an all-digit hash (which is unlikely but still possible)
is therefore misinterpreted as `stash@{<n>}` reflog.
To prevent that from happening, let's append `^0` after the stash hash,
to make sure that it is interpreted as an OID rather than as a number.

It was reported by Gábor Szeder and analyzed by Alban Gruin that the
built-in rebase stores only abbreviated stash hashes in the `autostash`
file.
This is problematic e.g. in t5520-pull.sh, where the abbreviated hash is
so short that it sometimes consists only of digits, which are
subsequently mistaken ("DWIMmed") for numbers by `git stash apply`.
Let's align the behavior of the built-in rebase with the scripted rebase
and store the full stash hash instead. That makes it a lot less likely
that it consists only of digits.

The builtin rebase and the builtin interactive rebase have been
developed independently, on purpose: Google Summer of Code rules
specifically state that students have to work on independent projects,
they cannot collaborate on the same project.
One fallout is that the rebase-in-c and rebase-i-in-c patches cause no
merge conflicts but a royal number of tests in the test suite to fail.
It is easy to explain why: rebase-in-c was developed under the
assumption that all rebase backends are implemented in Unix shell script
and can be sourced via `. git-rebase--<backend>`, which is no longer
true with rebase-i-in-c, where git-rebase--interactive is a hard-linked
builtin.
This patch fixes that.
Please note that we also skip the finish_rebase() call for interactive
rebases because the built-in interactive rebase already takes care of
that. This is needed to support the upcoming `break` command that wants
to interrupt the rebase with exit code 0 (and naturally wants to keep
the state directory intact when doing so).
While at it, remove the `case` arm for the interactive rebase that is
now skipped in favor of the short-cut to the built-in rebase.

While working on the GSoC project to convert the rebase command to a
builtin, the rebase command learned to error out on certain command-line
option combinations that cannot work, such as --whitespace=fix with
--interactive.
This commit converts that code.

Some options are only handled by the git-rebase--interactive backend,
even if run non-interactively. For this awkward situation (run
non-interactively, but use the interactive backend), the shell scripted
version of `git rebase` introduced the concept of an "implied
interactive rebase". All it does is to replace the editor by a dummy one
(`:` is the Unix command that takes arbitrary command-line parameters,
ignores them and simply exits with success).

In this commit, we pass `--progress` to the `format-patch` command if
stderr is connected to an interactive terminal, unless we're in quiet
mode.
This `--progress` option will be used in `format-patch` to show progress
reports on stderr as patches are generated.

When running a rebase in non-am mode, it uses the recursive merge to
cherry-pick the commits, and the rebase command allows to configure
the merge strategy to be used in this operation.

This commit introduces the `--allow-empty-message` option to
`builtin/rebase.c`. The motivation behind this option is: if there are
empty messages (which is not allowed in Git by default, but can be
imported from different version control systems), the rebase will fail.
Using `--allow-empty-message` overrides that behaviour which will allow
the commits having empty messages to continue in rebase operation.
Note: a very recent change made this the default in the shell scripted
`git rebase`, therefore the builtin rebase does the same.

This commit adds support for the `--exec` option which takes a shell
command-line as argument. This argument will be appended as an `exec
<cmd>` command after each line in the todo list that creates a commit in
the final history. commands.
Note: while the shell script version of `git rebase` assigned the empty
string to `cmd` by default, we *unset* it here because the code looks
nicer and it does not change the behavior.
The `--exec` option requires `--interactive` machinery.

To support `--autostash` we introduce a function `apply_autostash()`
just like in `git-legacy-rebase.sh`.
Rather than refactoring and using the same function that exists in
`sequencer.c`, we go a different route here, to avoid clashes with
the sister GSoC project that turns the interactive rebase into a
builtin.

This commit adds support for the `--autosquash` option which is used to
automatically squash the commits marked as `squash` or `fixup` in their
messages. This is converted following `git-legacy-rebase.sh` closely.
This option can also be configured via the Git config setting
rebase.autosquash. To support this, we also add a custom
rebase_config() function in this commit that will be used instead (and
falls back to) git_default_config().

The `--keep-empty` option can be used to keep the commits that do not
change anything from its parents in the result.
While the scripted version uses `interactive_rebase=implied` to indicate
that the rebase needs to use the `git-rebase--interactive` backend in
non-interactive mode as fallback when figuring out which backend to use,
the C version needs to use a different route because the backend will
already be chosen during the `parse_options()` call.

With this commit the builtin rebase supports selecting the "rebase
backends" (or "type") `interactive`, `preserve-merges`, and `merge`.
The `state_dir` was already handled according to the rebase type in a
previous commit.
Note that there is one quirk in the shell script: `--interactive`
followed by `--merge` won't reset the type to "merge" but keeps the type
as "interactive". And as t3418 tests this explicitly, we have to support
it in the builtin rebase, too.
Likewise, `--interactive` followed by `--preserve-merges` makes it an
"explicitly interactive" rebase, i.e. a rebase that should show the todo
list, while `--preserve-merges` alone is not interactive (and t5520
tests for this via `git pull --rebase=preserve`).

implementation is almost identical, so we convert them in one go.
And since those are the last sub-commands that needed to be converted,
now we can also turn that `default:` case into a bug (because we should

With this patch, the builtin rebase handles the `--quit` action which
can be used to abort a rebase without rolling back any changes performed
during the rebase (this is useful when a user forgot that they were in
the middle of a rebase and continued working normally).

This commit adds the option `--continue` which is used to resume
rebase after merge conflicts. The code tries to stay as close to
the equivalent shell scripts found in `git-legacy-rebase.sh` as
possible.
When continuing a rebase, the state variables are read from state_dir.
Some of the state variables are not actually stored there, such as
`upstream`. The shell script version simply does not set them, but for
consistency, we unset them in the builtin version.

When running a rebase on a detached HEAD, we currently store the string
"detached HEAD" in options.head_name. That is a faithful translation of
the shell script version, and we still kind of need it for the purposes of
the scripted backends.
It is poor style for C, though, where we would really only want a valid,
fully-qualified ref name as value, and NULL for detached HEADs, using
"detached HEAD" for display only. Make it so.

To run a new rebase, there needs to be a check to assure that no other

In this commit, we add support to `--force-rebase` option. The
equivalent part of the shell script found in `git-legacy-rebase.sh` is
converted as faithfully as possible to C.
The --force-rebase option ensures that the rebase does not simply
fast-forward even if it could.

In this commit, we add support to fast forward.
Note: we will need the merge base later, therefore the call to
can_fast_forward() really needs to be the first one when testing whether
we can skip the rebase entirely (otherwise, it would make more sense to
skip the possibly expensive operation if, say, running an interactive
rebase).

This commit introduces support for the `-v` and `--stat` options of
rebase.
The --stat option can also be configured via the Git config setting
rebase.stat. To support this, we also add a custom rebase_config()
function in this commit that will be used instead of (and falls back to
calling) git_default_config().

This commit introduces a rebase option `--quiet`. While `--quiet` is
commonly perceived as opposite to `--verbose`, this is not the case for
the rebase command: both `--quiet` and `--verbose` default to `false` if
neither `--quiet` nor `--verbose` is present.
Despite the default being `false` for both verbose and quiet mode,
passing the `--quiet` option will turn off verbose mode, and `--verbose`
will turn off quiet mode.
This patch introduces the `flags` bit field, with `REBASE_NO_QUIET`
as first user (with many more to come).
We do *not* use `REBASE_QUIET` here for an important reason: To keep the
implementation simple, this commit introduces `--no-quiet` instead of
`--quiet`, so that a single `OPT_NEGBIT()` can turn on quiet mode and
turn off verbose and diffstat mode at the same time. Likewise, the
companion commit which will introduce support for `--verbose` will have
a single `OPT_BIT()` that turns off quiet mode and turns on verbose and
diffstat mode at the same time.

This commit converts the equivalent part of the shell script
`git-legacy-rebase.sh` to run the pre-rebase hook (unless disabled), and
to interrupt the rebase with error if the hook fails.

This commit implements support for an --onto argument that is actually a
"symmetric range" i.e. `<rev1>...<rev2>`.
The equivalent shell script version of the code offers two different
error messages for the cases where there is no merge base vs more than
one merge base.
Though it would be nice to retain this distinction, dropping it makes it
possible to simply use the `get_oid_mb()` function. Besides, it happens
rarely in real-world scenarios.
Therefore, in the interest of keeping the code less complex, let's just
use that function, and live with an error message that does not
distinguish between those two error conditions.

The `--onto` option is important, as it allows to rebase a range of
commits onto a different base commit (which gave the command its odd
name: "rebase").
This commit introduces options parsing so that different options can
be added in future commits.
Note: As this commit introduces to the parse_options() call (which
"eats" argv[0]), the argc is now expected to be lower by one after this
patch, compared to before this patch: argv[0] no longer refers to the
command name, but to the first (non-option) command-line parameter.

This patch gives life to the skeleton added in the previous patches:
With this change, we can perform a elementary rebase (without any
options).
It can be tested thusly by:
git -c rebase.usebuiltin=true rebase HEAD~2
The rebase backends (i.e. the shell script functions defined in
`git-rebase--<backend>`) are still at work here and the "builtin
rebase"'s purpose is simply to parse the options and set
everything up so that those rebase backends can do their work.
Note: We take an alternative approach here which is *not* to set the
environment variables via `run_command_v_opt_cd_env()` because those
variables would then be visible by processes spawned from the rebase
backends. Instead, we work hard to set them in the shell script snippet.
On Windows, some of the tests fail merely due to core.fileMode not
being heeded that's why the core.*config variables is parsed here.
The `reset_head()` function is currently only used to detach the HEAD
to onto by way of starting the rebase, but it offers additional
functionality that subsequent patches will need like moving to the
original branch (possibly updating it) and also to do the equivalent of
`git reset --hard`.
The next commits will handle and support all the wonderful rebase
options.

This commit imitates the strategy that was used to convert the
difftool to a builtin. We start by renaming the shell script
`git-rebase.sh` to `git-legacy-rebase.sh` and introduce a
`builtin/rebase.c` that simply executes the shell script version,
unless the config setting `rebase.useBuiltin` is set to `true`.
The motivation behind this is to rewrite all the functionality of the
shell script version in the aforementioned `rebase.c`, one by one and
be able to conveniently test new features by configuring
`rebase.useBuiltin`.
In the original difftool conversion, if sane_execvp() that attempts to
run the legacy scripted version returned with non-negative status, the
command silently exited without doing anything with success, but
sane_execvp() should not return with non-negative status in the first
place, so we use die() to notice such an abnormal case.
We intentionally avoid reading the config directly to avoid
messing up the GIT_* environment variables when we need to fall back to
exec()ing the shell script. The test of builtin rebase can be done by
`git -c rebase.useBuiltin=true rebase ...`
