5c387428f1 (parse-options: don't emit "ambiguous option" for aliases,
2019-04-29) added "updated_options" to struct parse_opt_ctx_t, but it
has never been used. Remove it.

ae2c912c04 parse-options: introduce OPT_IPVERSION()
The command line option parsing for "git clone", "git fetch", and
"git push" have duplicated implementations of parsing "--ipv4" and
"--ipv6" options, by having two OPT_SET_INT() for "ipv4" and "ipv6".

Introduce a new OPT_IPVERSION() macro and use it in these three
commands.

fb60b9f37f sequencer: use struct strvec to store merge strategy options
The sequencer stores the merge strategy options in an array of strings
which allocated with ALLOC_GROW(). Using "struct strvec" avoids manually
managing the memory of that array and simplifies the code.

Aside from memory allocation the changes to the sequencer are largely
mechanical, changing xopts_nr to xopts.nr and xopts[i] to xopts.v[i]. A
new option parsing macro OPT_STRVEC() is also added to collect the
strategy options. Hopefully this can be used to simplify the code in
builtin/merge.c in the future.

Note that there is a change of behavior to "git cherry-pick" and "git
revert" as passing “--no-strategy-option” will now clear any previous
strategy options whereas before this change it did nothing.

4a4d9706ad parse-options: drop parse_opt_unknown_cb()
This low-level callback was introduced in ce564eb1bd (parse-options:
add parse_opt_unknown_cb(), 2016-09-05) so that we could advertise
--indent-heuristic in git-blame's "-h" output, even though the option is
actually handled in parse_revision_opt(). We later stopped doing so in
44ae131e38 (builtin/blame.c: remove '--indent-heuristic' from usage
string, 2019-10-28).

This is a weird thing to do, and in the intervening years, we've never
used it again. Let's drop the helper in the name of simplicity.

bb61a962d2 submodule--helper: don't use global --super-prefix in "absorbgitdirs"
The "--super-prefix" facility was introduced in [1] has always been a
transitory hack, which is why we've made it an error to supply it as
an option to "git" to commands that don't know about it.

That's been a good goal, as it has a global effect we haven't wanted
calls to get_super_prefix() from built-ins we didn't expect.

But it has meant that when we've had chains of different built-ins
using it all of the processes in that "chain" have needed to support
it, and worse processes that don't need it have needed to ask for
"SUPPORT_SUPER_PREFIX" because their parent process needs it.

That's how "fsmonitor--daemon" ended up with it, per [2] it's called
from (among other things) "submodule--helper absorbgitdirs", but as we
declared "submodule--helper" as "SUPPORT_SUPER_PREFIX" we needed to
declare "fsmonitor--daemon" as accepting it too, even though it
doesn't care about it.

But in the case of "absorbgitdirs" it only needed "--super-prefix" to
invoke itself recursively, and we'd never have another "in-between"
process in the chain. So we didn't need the bigger hammer of "git
--super-prefix", and the "setenv(GIT_SUPER_PREFIX_ENVIRONMENT, ...)"
that it entails.

Let's instead accept a hidden "--super-prefix" option to
"submodule--helper absorbgitdirs" itself.

Eventually (as with all other "--super-prefix" users) we'll want to
clean this code up so that this all happens in-process. I.e. needing
any variant of "--super-prefix" is itself a hack around our various
global state, and implicit reliance on "the_repository". This stepping
stone makes such an eventual change easier, as we'll need to deal with
less global state at that point.

The "fsmonitor--daemon" test adjusted here was added in [3]. To assert
that it didn't run into the "--super-prefix" message it was asserting
the output it didn't have. Let's instead assert the full output that
we *do* have, using the same pattern as a preceding change to
"t/t7412-submodule-absorbgitdirs.sh" used.

We could also remove the test entirely (as [4] did), but even though
the initial reason for having it is gone we're still getting some
marginal benefit from testing the "fsmonitor" and "submodule
absorbgitdirs" interaction, so let's keep it.

The change here to have either a NULL or non-"" string as a
"super_prefix" instead of the previous arrangement of "" or non-"" is
somewhat arbitrary. We could also decide to never have to check for
NULL.

As we'll be changing the rest of the "git --super-prefix" users to the
same pattern, leaving them all consistent makes sense. Why not pick ""
over NULL? Because that's how the "prefix" works[5], and having
"prefix" and "super_prefix" work the same way will be less
confusing. That "prefix" picked NULL instead of "" is itself
arbitrary, but as it's easy to make this small bit of our overall API
consistent, let's go with that.

fa83cc834d parse-options: add support for parsing subcommands
Several Git commands have subcommands to implement mutually exclusive
"operation modes", and they usually parse their subcommand argument
with a bunch of if-else if statements.

Teach parse-options to handle subcommands as well, which will result
in shorter and simpler code with consistent error handling and error
messages on unknown or missing subcommand, and it will also make
possible for our Bash completion script to handle subcommands
programmatically.

The approach is guided by the following observations:

  - Most subcommands [1] are implemented in dedicated functions, and
most of those functions [2] either have a signature matching the
'int cmd_foo(int argc, const char **argc, const char *prefix)'
signature of builtin commands or can be trivially converted to
that signature, because they miss only that last prefix parameter
or have no parameters at all.

  - Subcommand arguments only have long form, and they have no double
dash prefix, no negated form, and no description, and they don't
take any arguments, and can't be abbreviated.

  - There must be exactly one subcommand among the arguments, or zero
if the command has a default operation mode.

  - All arguments following the subcommand are considered to be
arguments of the subcommand, and, conversely, arguments meant for
the subcommand may not preceed the subcommand.

So in the end subcommand declaration and parsing would look something
like this:

    parse_opt_subcommand_fn *fn = NULL;
    struct option builtin_commit_graph_options[] = {
        OPT_STRING(0, "object-dir", &opts.obj_dir, N_("dir"),
N_("the object directory to store the graph")),
        OPT_SUBCOMMAND("verify", &fn, graph_verify),
        OPT_SUBCOMMAND("write", &fn, graph_write),
        OPT_END(),
    };
argc = parse_options(argc, argv, prefix, options,
                         builtin_commit_graph_usage, 0);
    return fn(argc, argv, prefix);

Here each OPT_SUBCOMMAND specifies the name of the subcommand and the
function implementing it, and the address of the same 'fn' subcommand
function pointer. parse_options() then processes the arguments until
it finds the first argument matching one of the subcommands, sets 'fn'
to the function associated with that subcommand, and returns, leaving
the rest of the arguments unprocessed. If none of the listed
subcommands is found among the arguments, parse_options() will show
usage and abort.

If a command has a default operation mode, 'fn' should be initialized
to the function implementing that mode, and parse_options() should be
invoked with the PARSE_OPT_SUBCOMMAND_OPTIONAL flag. In this case
parse_options() won't error out when not finding any subcommands, but
will return leaving 'fn' unchanged. Note that if that default
operation mode has any --options, then the PARSE_OPT_KEEP_UNKNOWN_OPT
flag is necessary as well (otherwise parse_options() would error out
upon seeing the unknown option meant to the default operation mode).

Some thoughts about the implementation:

  - The same pointer to 'fn' must be specified as 'value' for each
OPT_SUBCOMMAND, because there can be only one set of mutually
exclusive subcommands; parse_options() will BUG() otherwise.

There are other ways to tell parse_options() where to put the
function associated with the subcommand given on the command line,
    but I didn't like them:

      - Change parse_options()'s signature by adding a pointer to
subcommand function to be set to the function associated with
the given subcommand, affecting all callsites, even those that
        don't have subcommands.

      - Introduce a specific parse_options_and_subcommand() variant
        with that extra funcion parameter.

  - I decided against automatically calling the subcommand function
    from within parse_options(), because:

      - There are commands that have to perform additional actions
after option parsing but before calling the function
        implementing the specified subcommand.

      - The return code of the subcommand is usually the return code
of the git command, but preserving the return code of the
automatically called subcommand function would have made the
        API awkward.

  - Also add a OPT_SUBCOMMAND_F() variant to allow specifying an
option flag: we have two subcommands that are purposefully
excluded from completion ('git remote rm' and 'git stash save'),
so they'll have to be specified with the PARSE_OPT_NOCOMPLETE
    flag.

  - Some of the 'parse_opt_flags' don't make sense with subcommands,
and using them is probably just an oversight or misunderstanding.
Therefore parse_options() will BUG() when invoked with any of the
following flags while the options array contains at least one
    OPT_SUBCOMMAND:

      - PARSE_OPT_KEEP_DASHDASH: parse_options() stops parsing
arguments when encountering a "--" argument, so it doesn't
make sense to expect and keep one before a subcommand, because
it would prevent the parsing of the subcommand.

However, this flag is allowed in combination with the
PARSE_OPT_SUBCOMMAND_OPTIONAL flag, because the double dash
might be meaningful for the command's default operation mode,
e.g. to disambiguate refs and pathspecs.

      - PARSE_OPT_STOP_AT_NON_OPTION: As its name suggests, this flag
tells parse_options() to stop as soon as it encouners a
non-option argument, but subcommands are by definition not
options... so how could they be parsed, then?!

      - PARSE_OPT_KEEP_UNKNOWN: This flag can be used to collect any
unknown --options and then pass them to a different command or
subsystem. Surely if a command has subcommands, then this
functionality should rather be delegated to one of those
subcommands, and not performed by the command itself.

However, this flag is allowed in combination with the
PARSE_OPT_SUBCOMMAND_OPTIONAL flag, making possible to pass
--options to the default operation mode.

  - If the command with subcommands has a default operation mode, then
all arguments to the command must preceed the arguments of the
    subcommand.

AFAICT we don't have any commands where this makes a difference,
because in those commands either only the command accepts any
arguments ('notes' and 'remote'), or only the default subcommand
('reflog' and 'stash'), but never both.

  - The 'argv' array passed to subcommand functions currently starts
with the name of the subcommand. Keep this behavior. AFAICT no
subcommand functions depend on the actual content of 'argv[0]',
but the parse_options() call handling their options expects that
    the options start at argv[1].

  - To support handling subcommands programmatically in our Bash
completion script, 'git cmd --git-completion-helper' will now list
both subcommands and regular --options, if any. This means that
the completion script will have to separate subcommands (i.e.
words without a double dash prefix) from --options on its own, but
that's rather easy to do, and it's not much work either, because
the number of subcommands a command might have is rather low, and
those commands accept only a single --option or none at all. An
alternative would be to introduce a separate option that lists
only subcommands, but then the completion script would need not
one but two git invocations and command substitutions for commands
    with subcommands.

Note that this change doesn't affect the behavior of our Bash
completion script, because when completing the --option of a
command with subcommands, e.g. for 'git notes --<TAB>', then all
subcommands will be filtered out anyway, as none of them will
match the word to be completed starting with that double dash
    prefix.

[1] Except 'git rerere', because many of its subcommands are
implemented in the bodies of the if-else if statements parsing the
    command's subcommand argument.

[2] Except 'credential', 'credential-store' and 'fsmonitor--daemon',
because some of the functions implementing their subcommands take
    special parameters.

d3115660b4 branch: add flags and config to inherit tracking
It can be helpful when creating a new branch to use the existing
tracking configuration from the branch point. However, there is
currently not a method to automatically do so.

Teach git-{branch,checkout,switch} an "inherit" argument to the
"--track" option. When this is set, creating a new branch will cause the
tracking configuration to default to the configuration of the branch
point, if set.

For example, if branch "main" tracks "origin/main", and we run
`git checkout --track=inherit -b feature main`, then branch "feature"
will track "origin/main". Thus, `git status` will show us how far
ahead/behind we are from origin, and `git pull` will pull from origin.

This is particularly useful when creating branches across many
submodules, such as with `git submodule foreach ...` (or if running with
a patch such as [1], which we use at $job), as it avoids having to
manually set tracking info for each submodule.

Since we've added an argument to "--track", also add "--track=direct" as
another way to explicitly get the original "--track" behavior ("--track"
without an argument still works as well).

Finally, teach branch.autoSetupMerge a new "inherit" option. When this
is set, "--track=inherit" becomes the default behavior.

28794ec72e parse-options.[ch]: make opt{bug,name}() "static"
Change these two functions to "static", the last user of "optname()"
outside of parse-options.c itself went away in the preceding commit,
for the reasons noted in 9440b831ad (parse-options: replace
opterror() with optname(), 2018-11-10) we shouldn't be adding any more
users of it.

The "optbug()" function was never used outside of parse-options.c, but
was made non-static in 1f275b7c4c (parse-options: export opterr,
optbug, 2011-08-11). I think the only external user of optname() was
the commit-graph.c caller added in 09e0327f57 (builtin/commit-graph.c:

7bf7f0ba05 parse-options.h: make the "flags" in "struct option" an enum
Change the "flags" members of "struct option" to refer to their
corresponding "enum" defined earlier in the file.

The benefit of changing this to an enum isn't as great as with some
"enum parse_opt_type" as we'll always check this as a bitfield, so we
can't rely on the compiler checking "case" arms for us. But let's do
it for consistency with the rest of the file.

352e761388 parse-options.[ch]: consistently use "enum parse_opt_result"
Use the "enum parse_opt_result" instead of an "int flags" as the
return value of the applicable functions in parse-options.c.

This will help catch future bugs, such as the missing "case" arms in
the two existing users of the API in "blame.c" and "shortlog.c". A
third caller in 309be813c9 (update-index: migrate to parse-options
API, 2010-12-01) was already checking for these.

As can be seen when trying to sort through the deluge of warnings
produced when compiling this with CC=g++ (mostly unrelated to this
change) we're not consistently using "enum parse_opt_result" even now,
i.e. we'll return error() and "return 0;". See f41179f16b
(parse-options: avoid magic return codes, 2019-01-27) for a commit
which started changing some of that.

I'm not doing any more of that exhaustive migration here, and it's
probably not worthwhile past the point of being able to check "enum
parse_opt_result" in switch().

3f9ab7ccde parse-options.[ch]: consistently use "enum parse_opt_flags"
Use the "enum parse_opt_flags" instead of an "int flags" as arguments
to the various functions in parse-options.c.

Even though this is an enum bitfield there's there's a benefit to
doing this when it comes to the wider C ecosystem. E.g. the GNU
debugger (gdb) will helpfully detect and print out meaningful enum
labels in this case. Here's the output before and after when breaking
in "parse_options()" after invoking "git stash show":

Before:

    (gdb) p flags
    $1 = 9

After:

    (gdb) p flags
    $1 = (PARSE_OPT_KEEP_DASHDASH | PARSE_OPT_KEEP_UNKNOWN)

Of course as noted in[1] there's a limit to this smartness,
i.e. manually setting it with unrelated enum labels won't be
caught. There are some third-party extensions to do more exhaustive
checking[2], perhaps we'll be able to make use of them sooner than
later.

We've also got prior art using this pattern in the codebase. See
e.g. "enum bloom_filter_computed" added in 312cff5207 (bloom: split
'get_bloom_filter()' in two, 2020-09-16) and the "permitted" enum
added in ce910287e7 (add -p: fix checking of user input, 2020-08-17).

3b723f722d parse-options.h: move PARSE_OPT_SHELL_EVAL between enums
Fix a bad landmine of a bug which has been with us ever since
PARSE_OPT_SHELL_EVAL was added in 47e9cd28f8 (parseopt: wrap
rev-parse --parseopt usage for eval consumption, 2010-06-12).

It's an argument to parse_options() and should therefore be in "enum
parse_opt_flags", but it was added to the per-option "enum
parse_opt_option_flags" by mistake.

Therefore as soon as we'd have an enum member in the former that
reached its value of "1 << 8" we'd run into a seemingly bizarre bug
where that new option would turn on the unrelated PARSE_OPT_SHELL_EVAL
in "git rev-parse --parseopt" by proxy.

I manually checked that no other enum members suffered from such
overlap, by setting the values to non-overlapping values, and making
the relevant codepaths BUG() out if the given value was above/below
the expected (excluding flags=0 in the case of "enum
parse_opt_flags").

d35d03cf93 help: simplify by moving to OPT_CMDMODE()
As preceding commits have incrementally established all of the --all,
--guides, --config and hidden --config-for-completion options are
mutually exclusive. So let's use OPT_CMDMODE() to parse the
command-line instead, and take advantage of its conflicting options
detection.

This is the first command with a hidden CMDMODE, so let's introduce a
OPT_CMDMODE_F() macro to go along with OPT_CMDMODE().

I think this makes the usage information that we emit slightly worse,
e.g. before we'd emit:

    $ git help --all --config
fatal: --config and --all cannot be combined

    usage: git help [-a|--all] [--[no-]verbose]]
             [[-i|--info] [-m|--man] [-w|--web]] [<command>]
       or: git help [-g|--guides]
       or: git help [-c|--config]
    [...]
    $

And now:

    $ git help --all --config
error: option `config' is incompatible with --all
    $

But improving that is a general topic for parse-options.c improvement,
i.e. we should probably emit the full usage in that case.

4c25356e0e parse-options API: remove OPTION_ARGUMENT feature
As was noted in 1a85b49b87 (parse-options: make OPT_ARGUMENT() more
useful, 2019-03-14) there's only ever been one user of the
OPT_ARGUMENT(), that user was added in 20de316e33 (difftool: allow
running outside Git worktrees with --no-index, 2019-03-14).

The OPT_ARGUMENT() feature itself was added way back in
580d5bffde (parse-options: new option type to treat an option-like
parameter as an argument., 2008-03-02), but as discussed in
1a85b49b87 wasn't used until 20de316e33 in 2019.

Now that the preceding commit has migrated this code over to using
"struct strvec" to manage the "args" member of a "struct
child_process", we can just use that directly instead of relying on
OPT_ARGUMENT.

This has a minor change in behavior in that if we'll pass --no-index
we'll now always pass it as the first argument, before we'd pass it in
whatever position the caller did. Preserving this was the real value
of OPT_ARGUMENT(), but as it turns out we didn't need that either. We
can always inject it as the first argument, the other end will parse
it just the same.

Note that we cannot remove the "out" and "cpidx" members of "struct
parse_opt_ctx_t" added in 580d5bffde, while they were introduced with
OPT_ARGUMENT() we since used them for other things.

64cc539fd2 parse-options: don't leak alias help messages
preprocess_options() allocates new strings for help messages for
OPTION_ALIAS. Therefore we also need to clean those help messages up
when freeing the returned options.

First introduced in:
7c280589cf (parse-options: teach "git cmd -h" to show alias as alias, 2020-03-16)

The preprocessed options themselves no longer contain any indication
that a given option is/was an alias - therefore we add a new flag to
indicate former aliases. (An alternative approach would be to look back
at the original options to determine which options are aliases - but
that seems like a fragile approach. Or we could even look at the
alias_groups list - which might be less fragile, but would be slower
as it requires nested looping.)

As far as I can tell, parse_options() is only ever used once per
command, and the help messages are small - hence this leak has very
little impact.

This leak was found while running t0001. LSAN output can be found below:

4ca7994b2a parse-options: format argh like error messages
"Keep it homogeneous across the repository" is in general a
guideline that can be used to converge to a good practice, but
we can be a bit more prescriptive in this case. Just like the
messages we give die(_("...")) are formatted without the final
full stop and without the initial capitalization, most of the
argument help text are already formatted that way, and we want
to encourage that as the house style.

a03b55530a merge: teach --autostash option
In rebase, one can pass the `--autostash` option to cause the worktree
to be automatically stashed before continuing with the rebase. This
option is missing in merge, however.

Implement the `--autostash` option and corresponding `merge.autoStash`
option in merge which stashes before merging and then pops after.

This option is useful when a developer has some local changes on a topic
branch but they realize that their work depends on another branch.
Previously, they had to run something like

	git fetch ...
	git stash push
	git merge FETCH_HEAD
	git stash pop

but now, that is reduced to

	git fetch ...
	git merge --autostash FETCH_HEAD

When an autostash is generated, it is automatically reapplied to the
worktree only in three explicit situations:

	1. An incomplete merge is commit using `git commit`.
	2. A merge completes successfully.
	3. A merge is aborted using `git merge --abort`.

In all other situations where the merge state is removed using
remove_merge_branch_state() such as aborting a merge via
`git reset --hard`, the autostash is saved into the stash reflog
instead keeping the worktree clean.

bc8620b440 parse-options: convert "command mode" to a flag
OPTION_CMDMODE is essentially OPTION_SET_INT plus an extra check that
the variable had not set before. In order to allow custom processing
of the option, for example a "command mode" option that also has an
argument, it would be nice to use OPTION_CALLBACK and not have to rewrite
the extra check on incompatible options. In other words, making the
processing of the option orthogonal to the "only one of these" behavior
provided by OPTION_CMDMODE.

Add a new flag that takes care of the check, and modify OPT_CMDMODE to
use it together with OPTION_SET_INT. The new flag still requires that the
option value points to an int, but any OPTION_* value can be specified as
long as it does not require a non-int type for opt->value.

add97702ed parse-options.h: add new options --pathspec-from-file, --pathspec-file-nul
Support for various porcelain commands will arrive via additional
patches.

`--pathspec-from-file` solves the problem of commandline length limit
for UIs built on top of git. Plumbing commands are not always a good
fit, for two major reasons:
1) Some UIs show executed commands to user. In this case, porcelain
commands are expected. One reason for that is letting user learn git
commands by clicking UI buttons. The other reason is letting user
study the history of commands in case of any unexpected results. Both
of these will lose most of their value if UI uses combinations of
   arcane plumbing commands.
2) Some UIs have started and grown with porcelain commands. Replacing
existing logic with plumbing commands could be cumbersome and prone
   to various new problems.

`--pathspec-from-file` will behave very close to pathspec passed in
commandline args, so that switching from one to another is simple.

`--pathspec-from-file` will read either a specified file or `stdin`
(when file is exactly "-"). Reading from file is a good way to avoid
competing for `stdin`, and also gives some extra flexibility.

`--pathspec-file-nul` switch mirrors `-z` already used in various
places. Some porcelain commands, such as `git commit`, already use
`-z`, therefore it needed a new unambiguous name.

New options do not have shorthands to avoid shorthand conflicts. It is
not expected that they will be typed in console.
