91c080dff5 git-compat-util: move alloc macros to git-compat-util.h
alloc_nr, ALLOC_GROW, and ALLOC_GROW_BY are commonly used macros for
dynamic array allocation. Moving these macros to git-compat-util.h with
the other alloc macros focuses alloc.[ch] to allocation for Git objects
and additionally allows us to remove inclusions to alloc.h from files
that solely used the above macros.

08c46a499a read-cache*.h: move declarations for read-cache.c functions from cache.h
For the functions defined in read-cache.c, move their declarations from
cache.h to a new header, read-cache-ll.h. Also move some related inline
functions from cache.h to read-cache.h. The purpose of the
read-cache-ll.h/read-cache.h split is that about 70% of the sites don't
need the inline functions and the extra headers they include.

d1cbe1e6d8 hash-ll.h: split out of hash.h to remove dependency on repository.h
hash.h depends upon and includes repository.h, due to the definition and
use of the_hash_algo (defined as the_repository->hash_algo). However,
most headers trying to include hash.h are only interested in the layout
of the structs like object_id. Move the parts of hash.h that do not
depend upon repository.h into a new file hash-ll.h (the "low level"
parts of hash.h), and adjust other files to use this new header where
the convenience inline functions aren't needed.

This allows hash.h and object.h to be fairly small, minimal headers. It
also exposes a lot of hidden dependencies on both path.h (which was
brought in by repository.h) and repository.h (which was previously
implicitly brought in by object.h), so also adjust other files to be
more explicit about what they depend upon.

f394e093df treewide: be explicit about dependence on gettext.h
Dozens of files made use of gettext functions, without explicitly
including gettext.h. This made it more difficult to find which files
could remove a dependence on cache.h. Make C files explicitly include
gettext.h if they are using it.

However, while compat/fsmonitor/fsm-ipc-darwin.c should also gain an
include of gettext.h, it was left out to avoid conflicting with an

f0a5e5ad57 submodule.c & submodule--helper: pass along "super_prefix" param
Start passing the "super_prefix" along as a parameter to
get_submodule_displaypath() and absorb_git_dir_into_superproject(),
rather than get the value directly as a global.

This is in preparation for subsequent commits, where we'll gradually
phase out get_super_prefix() for an alternative way of getting the
"super_prefix".

Most of the users of this get a get_super_prefix() value, either
directly or by indirection. The exceptions are:

- builtin/rm.c: Doesn't declare SUPPORT_SUPER_PREFIX, so we'd have
  died if this was provided, so it's safe to pass "NULL".

- deinit_submodule(): The "deinit_submodule()" function has never been
  able to use the "git -super-prefix". It will call
  "absorb_git_dir_into_superproject()", but it will only do so from the
  top-level project.

  If "absorbgitdirs" recurses will use the "path" passed to
  "absorb_git_dir_into_superproject()" in "deinit_submodule()" as its
  starting "--super-prefix". So we can safely remove the
  get_super_prefix() call here, and pass NULL instead.

07047d6829 cocci: apply "pending" index-compatibility to some "builtin/*.c"
Apply "index-compatibility.pending.cocci" rule to "builtin/*", but
exclude those where we conflict with in-flight changes.

As a result some of them end up using only "the_index", so let's have

"USE_THE_INDEX_COMPATIBILITY_MACROS".

Manual changes not made by coccinelle, that were squashed in:

* Whitespace-wrap argument lists for repo_hold_locked_index(),
  repo_read_index_preload() and repo_refresh_and_write_index(), in cases
  where the line became too long after the transformation.
* Change "refresh_cache()" to "refresh_index()" in a comment in

dc594180d9 cocci & cache.h: apply variable section of "pending" index-compatibility
Mostly apply the part of "index-compatibility.pending.cocci" that
renames the global variables like "active_nr", which are a shorthand
to referencing (in that case) a struct member as "the_index.cache_nr".

In doing so move more of "index-compatibility.pending.cocci" to
"index-compatibility.cocci".

In the case of "active_nr" we'd have a textual conflict with
"ab/various-leak-fixes" in "next"[1]. Let's exclude that specific case
while moving the rule over from "pending".

Apply a selection of rules in "index-compatibility.pending.cocci"
tree-wide, and in doing so migrate them to
"index-compatibility.cocci".

As in preceding commits the only manual changes here are the macro
removals in "cache.h", and the update to the '*.cocci" rules. The rest
of the C code changes are the result of applying those updated rules.

Move rules for some rarely used cache compatibility macros from
"index-compatibility.pending.cocci" to "index-compatibility.cocci" and
apply them.

82ff87789b submodule API & "absorbgitdirs": remove "----recursive" option
Remove the "----recursive" option to "git submodule--helper
absorbgitdirs" (yes, with 4 dashes, not 2).

This option and all the "else" when "flags &
ABSORB_GITDIR_RECURSE_SUBMODULES" is false has never been used since
it was added in f6f8586140 (submodule: add absorb-git-dir function,
2016-12-12), which we'd have had to do as "----recursive", a
"--recursive" would have errored out.

It would be nice to follow-up with an optbug() assertion to
parse-options.c for such funnily named options, I manually validated
that this was the only long option whose name started with "-", but
let's skip adding such an assertion for now.

d9054a19ed doc txt & -h consistency: add missing options
Change those built-in commands that were attempting to exhaustively
list the options in the "-h" output to actually do so, and always
have *.txt documentation know about the exhaustive list of options.

Let's also fix the documentation and -h output for those built-in
commands where the *.txt and -h output was a mismatch of missing
options on both sides.

In the case of "interpret-trailers" fixing the missing options reveals
that the *.txt version was implicitly claiming that the command had
two operating modes, which a look at the -h version (and studying the
documentation) will show is not the case.

ede241c715 rm: integrate with sparse-index
Enable the sparse index within the `git-rm` command.

The `p2000` tests demonstrate a ~92% execution time reduction for
'git rm' using a sparse index.

Test                              HEAD~1            HEAD

2000.75: git rm ... (full-v4)     0.38(0.34+0.05)   0.39(0.35+0.05) +2.6%
2000.76: git rm ... (sparse-v3)   0.57(0.56+0.01)   0.05(0.05+0.00) -91.2%
2000.77: git rm ... (sparse-v4)   0.57(0.55+0.02)   0.03(0.03+0.00) -94.7%

----
Also, normalize a behavioral difference of `git-rm` under sparse-index.
See related discussion [1].

`git-rm` a sparse-directory entry within a sparse-index enabled repo
behaves differently from a sparse directory within a sparse-checkout
enabled repo.

For example, in a sparse-index repo, where 'folder1' is a
sparse-directory entry, `git rm -r --sparse folder1` provides this:

        rm 'folder1/'

Whereas in a sparse-checkout repo *without* sparse-index, doing so
provides this:

        rm 'folder1/0/0/0'
        rm 'folder1/0/1'
        rm 'folder1/a'

Because `git rm` a sparse-directory entry does not need to expand the
index, therefore we should accept the current behavior, which is faster
than "expand the sparse-directory entry to match the sparse-checkout
situation".

Modify a previous test so such difference is not considered as an error.

bcf96cfca6 rm: expand the index only when necessary
Remove the `ensure_full_index()` method so `git-rm` does not always
expand the index when the expansion is unnecessary, i.e. when
<pathspec> does not have any possibilities to match anything outside
of sparse-checkout definition.

Expand the index when the <pathspec> needs an expanded index, i.e. the
<pathspec> contains wildcard that may need a full-index or the
<pathspec> is simply outside of sparse-checkout definition.

Notice that the test 'rm pathspec expands index when necessary' in
t1092 *is* testing this code change behavior, though it will be marked
as 'test_expect_success' only in the next patch, where we officially
mark `command_requires_full_index = 0`, so the index does not expand
unless we tell it to do so.

Notice that because we also want `ensure_full_index` to record the
stdout and stderr from Git command, a corresponding modification
is also included in this patch. The reason we want the "sparse-index-out"
and "sparse-index-err", is that we need to make sure there is no error
from Git command itself, so we can rely on the `test_region` result
and determine if the index is expanded or not.

d7c4415e55 rm: skip sparse paths with missing SKIP_WORKTREE
If a path does not match the sparse-checkout cone but is somehow missing
the SKIP_WORKTREE bit, then 'git rm' currently succeeds in removing the
file. One reason a user might be in this situation is a merge conflict
outside of the sparse-checkout cone. Removing such a file might be
problematic for users who are not sure what they are doing.

Add a check to path_in_sparse_checkout() when 'git rm' is checking if a
path should be considered for deletion. Of course, this check is ignored
if the '--sparse' option is specified, allowing users who accept the
risks to continue with the removal.

This also removes a confusing behavior where a user asks for a directory
to be removed, but only the entries that are within the sparse-checkout
definition are removed. Now, 'git rm <dir>' will fail without '--sparse'
and will succeed in removing all contained paths with '--sparse'.

d5f4b8260f rm: honor sparse checkout patterns
`git add` refrains from adding or updating index entries that are
outside the current sparse checkout, but `git rm` doesn't follow the
same restriction. This is somewhat counter-intuitive and inconsistent.
So make `rm` honor the sparsity rules and advise on how to remove
SKIP_WORKTREE entries just like `add` does. Also add some tests for the
new behavior.

5f393dc3aa rm: support the --pathspec-from-file option
Decisions taken for simplicity:
1) It is not allowed to pass pathspec in both args and file.

Adjustments were needed for `if (!argc)` block:

This code actually means "pathspec is not present". Previously, pathspec
could only come from commandline arguments, so testing for `argc` was a
valid way of testing for the presence of pathspec. But this is no longer
true with `--pathspec-from-file`.

During the entire `--pathspec-from-file` story, I tried to keep its
behavior very close to giving pathspec on commandline, so that switching
from one to another doesn't involve any surprises.

However, throwing usage at user in the case of empty
`--pathspec-from-file` would puzzle because there's nothing wrong with
"usage" (that is, argc/argv array).

On the other hand, throwing usage in the old case also feels bad to me.
While it's less of a puzzle, I (as user) never liked the experience of
comparing my commandline to "usage", trying to spot a difference. Since
it's already known what the error is, it feels a lot better to give that
specific error to user.

Judging from [1] it doesn't seem that showing usage in this case was
important (the patch was to avoid segfault), and it doesn't fit into how
other commands react to empty pathspec (see for example `git add` with a
custom message).

Therefore, I decided to show new error text in both cases. In order to
continue testing for error early, I moved `parse_pathspec()` higher. Now
it happens before `read_cache()` / `hold_locked_index()` /
`setup_work_tree()`, which shouldn't cause any issues.

5e9d9787d2 Merge branch 'jc/denoise-rm-to-resolve'
"git rm" to resolve a conflicted path leaked an internal message
"needs merge" before actually removing the path, which was
confusing.  This has been corrected.

b2b1f615ce rm: resolving by removal is not a warning-worthy event
When resolving a conflict on a path in favor of removing it, using
"git rm" on it is the standard way to do so. The user however is
greeted with a "needs merge" message during that operation:

	$ git merge side-branch
	$ edit conflicted-path-1
	$ git add conflicted-path-1
	$ git rm conflicted-path-2
	conflicted-path-2: needs merge
	rm 'conflicted-path-2'

The removal by "git rm" does get performed, but an uninitiated user
may find it confusing, "needs merge? so I need to resolve conflict
before being able to remove it???"

The message is coming from "update-index --refresh" that is called
internally to make sure "git rm" knows which paths are clean and
which paths are dirty, in order to prevent removal of paths modified
relative to the index without the "-f" option. We somehow ended up
not squelching this message which seeped through to the UI surface.

Use the same mechanism used by "git commit", "git describe", etc. to
squelch the message.

9001dc2a74 convert "oidcmp() != 0" to "!oideq()"
This is the flip side of the previous two patches: checking
for a non-zero oidcmp() can be more strictly expressed as
inequality. Like those patches, we write "!= 0" in the
coccinelle transformation, which covers by isomorphism the
more common:

  if (oidcmp(E1, E2))

As with the previous two patches, this patch can be achieved
almost entirely by running "make coccicheck"; the only
differences are manual line-wrap fixes to match the original
code.

There is one thing to note for anybody replicating this,
though: coccinelle 1.0.4 seems to miss the case in
builtin/tag.c, even though it's basically the same as all
the others. Running with 1.0.7 does catch this, so
presumably it's just a coccinelle bug that was fixed in the
interim.

1a07e59c3e Update messages in preparation for i18n
Many messages will be marked for translation in the following
commits. This commit updates some of them to be more consistent and
reduce diff noise in those commits. Changes are

- keep the first letter of die(), error() and warning() in lowercase
- no full stop in die(), error() or warning() if it's single sentence
  messages
- indentation
- some messages are turned to BUG(), or prefixed with "BUG:" and will
  not be marked for i18n
- some messages are improved to give more information
- some messages are broken down by sentence to be i18n friendly
  (on the same token, combine multiple warning() into one big string)
- the trailing \n is converted to printf_ln if possible, or deleted
  if not redundant
- errno_errno() is used instead of explicit strerror()

0fa5a2ed8d lock_file: move static locks into functions
Placing `struct lock_file`s on the stack used to be a bad idea, because
the temp- and lockfile-machinery would keep a pointer into the struct.
But after 076aa2cbd (tempfile: auto-allocate tempfiles on heap,
2017-09-05), we can safely have lockfiles on the stack. (This applies
even if a user returns early, leaving a locked lock behind.)

Each of these `struct lock_file`s is used from within a single function.
Move them into the respective functions to make the scope clearer and
drop the staticness.

For good measure, I have inspected these sites and come to believe that
they always release the lock, with the possible exception of bailing out
using `die()` or `exit()` or by returning from a `cmd_foo()`.

As pointed out by Jeff King, it would be bad if someone held on to a
`struct lock_file *` for some reason. After some grepping, I agree with
his findings: no-one appears to be doing that.

After this commit, the remaining occurrences of "static struct
lock_file" are locks that are used from within different functions. That
is, they need to remain static. (Short of more intrusive changes like
passing around pointers to non-static locks.)

610008146e write_locked_index(): add flag to avoid writing unchanged index
We have several callers like

	if (active_cache_changed && write_locked_index(...))
		handle_error();
	rollback_lock_file(...);

where the final rollback is needed because "!active_cache_changed"
shortcuts the if-expression. There are also a few variants of this,
including some if-else constructs that make it more clear when the
explicit rollback is really needed.

Teach `write_locked_index()` to take a new flag SKIP_IF_UNCHANGED and
simplify the callers. Leave the most complicated of the callers (in
builtin/update-index.c) unchanged. Rewriting it to use this new flag
would end up duplicating logic.

We could have made the new flag behave the other way round
("FORCE_WRITE"), but that could break existing users behind their backs.
Let's take the more conservative approach. We can still migrate existing
callers to use our new flag. Later we might even be able to flip the
default, possibly without entirely ignoring the risk to in-flight or
out-of-tree topics.
