05d57750c6 push: new config option "push.autoSetupRemote" supports "simple" push
In some "simple" centralized workflows, users expect remote tracking
branch names to match local branch names. "git push" pushes to the
remote version/instance of the branch, and "git pull" pulls any changes
to the remote branch (changes made by the same user in another place, or
by other users).

This expectation is supported by the push.default default option "simple"
which refuses a default push for a mismatching tracking branch name, and
by the new branch.autosetupmerge option, "simple", which only sets up
remote tracking for same-name remote branches.

When a new branch has been created by the user and has not yet been
pushed (and push.default is not set to "current"), the user is prompted
with a "The current branch %s has no upstream branch" error, and
instructions on how to push and add tracking.

This error is helpful in that following the advice once per branch
"resolves" the issue for that branch forever, but inconvenient in that
for the "simple" centralized workflow, this is always the right thing to
do, so it would be better to just do it.

Support this workflow with a new config setting, push.autoSetupRemote,
which will cause a default push, when there is no remote tracking branch
configured, to push to the same-name on the remote and --set-upstream.

Also add a hint offering this new option when the "The current branch %s
has no upstream branch" error is encountered, and add corresponding tests.

f36d4f8316 ls-remote & transport API: release "struct transport_ls_refs_options"
Fix a memory leak in codepaths that use the "struct
transport_ls_refs_options" API. Since the introduction of the struct
in 39835409d1 (connect, transport: encapsulate arg in struct,
2021-02-05) the caller has been responsible for freeing it.

That commit in turn migrated code originally added in
402c47d939 (clone: send ref-prefixes when using protocol v2,
2018-07-20) and b4be74105f (ls-remote: pass ref prefixes when
requesting a remote's refs, 2018-03-15). Only some of those codepaths
were releasing the allocated resources of the struct, now all of them
will.

Mark the "t/t5511-refspec.sh" test as passing when git is compiled
with SANITIZE=leak. They'll now be listed as running under the
"GIT_TEST_PASSING_SANITIZE_LEAK=true" test mode (the "linux-leaks" CI
target). Previously 24/47 tests would fail.

58d4d7f1c5 fetch: fix deadlock when cleaning up lockfiles in async signals
When fetching packfiles, we write a bunch of lockfiles for the packfiles
we're writing into the repository. In order to not leave behind any
cruft in case we exit or receive a signal, we register both an exit
handler as well as signal handlers for common signals like SIGINT. These
handlers will then unlink the locks and free the data structure tracking
them. We have observed a deadlock in this logic though:

The process was killed with a signal, which caused the signal handler to
kick in and try free the data structures after we have unlinked the
locks. It then deadlocks while calling free(3P).

The root cause of this is that it is not allowed to call certain
functions in async-signal handlers, as specified by signal-safety(7).
Next to most I/O functions, this list of disallowed functions also
includes memory-handling functions like malloc(3P) and free(3P) because
they may not be reentrant. As a result, if we execute such functions in
the signal handler, then they may operate on inconistent state and fail
in unexpected ways.

Fix this bug by not calling non-async-signal-safe functions when running
in the signal handler. We're about to re-raise the signal anyway and
will thus exit, so it's not much of a problem to keep the string list of
lockfiles untouched. Note that it's fine though to call unlink(2), so
we'll still clean up the lockfiles correctly.

f69a6e4f07 *.h: move some *_INIT to designated initializers
Move various *_INIT macros to use designated initializers. This helps
readability. I've only picked those leftover macros that were not
touched by another in-flight series of mine which changed others, but
also how initialization was done.

In the case of SUBMODULE_ALTERNATE_SETUP_INIT I've left an explicit
initialization of "error_mode", even though
SUBMODULE_ALTERNATE_ERROR_IGNORE itself is defined as "0". Let's not
peek under the hood and assume that enum fields we know the value of
will stay at "0".

The change to "TESTSUITE_INIT" in "t/helper/test-run-command.c" was
part of an earlier on-list version[1] of c90be786da (test-tool
run-command: fix flip-flop init pattern, 2021-09-11).

9c1e657a8f fetch: teach independent negotiation (no packfile)
Currently, the packfile negotiation step within a Git fetch cannot be
done independent of sending the packfile, even though there is at least
one application wherein this is useful. Therefore, make it possible for
this negotiation step to be done independently. A subsequent commit will
use this for one such application - push negotiation.

This feature is for protocol v2 only. (An implementation for protocol v0
would require a separate implementation in the fetch, transport, and
transport helper code.)

In the protocol, the main hindrance towards independent negotiation is
that the server can unilaterally decide to send the packfile. This is
solved by a "wait-for-done" argument: the server will then wait for the
client to say "done". In practice, the client will never say it; instead
it will cease requests once it is satisfied.

In the client, the main change lies in the transport and transport
helper code. fetch_refs_via_pack() performs everything needed - protocol
version and capability checks, and the negotiation itself.

There are 2 code paths that do not go through fetch_refs_via_pack() that
needed to be individually excluded: the bundle transport (excluded
through requiring smart_options, which the bundle transport doesn't
support) and transport helpers that do not support takeover. If or when
we support independent negotiation for protocol v0, we will need to
modify these 2 code paths to support it. But for now, report failure if
independent negotiation is requested in these cases.

4fe788b1b0 builtin/clone.c: add --reject-shallow option
In some scenarios, users may want more history than the repository
offered for cloning, which happens to be a shallow repository, can
give them. But because users don't know it is a shallow repository
until they download it to local, we may want to refuse to clone
this kind of repository, without creating any unnecessary files.

The '--depth=x' option cannot be used as a solution; the source may
be deep enough to give us 'x' commits when cloned, but the user may
later need to deepen the history to arbitrary depth.

Teach '--reject-shallow' option to "git clone" to abort as soon as
we find out that we are cloning from a shallow repository.

39835409d1 connect, transport: encapsulate arg in struct
In a future patch we plan to return the name of an unborn current branch
from deep in the callchain to a caller via a new pointer parameter that
points at a variable in the caller when the caller calls
get_remote_refs() and transport_get_remote_refs().

In preparation for that, encapsulate the existing ref_prefixes
parameter into a struct. The aforementioned unborn current branch will
go into this new struct in the future patch.

3b990aa645 push: parse and set flag for "--force-if-includes"
The previous commit added the necessary machinery to implement the
"--force-if-includes" protection, when "--force-with-lease" is used
without giving exact object the remote still ought to have. Surface
the feature by adding a command line option and a configuration
variable to enable it.

 - Add a flag: "TRANSPORT_PUSH_FORCE_IF_INCLUDES" to indicate that the
new option was passed from the command line of via configuration
settings; update command line and configuration parsers to set the
   new flag accordingly.

 - Introduce a new configuration option "push.useForceIfIncludes", which
is equivalent to setting "--force-if-includes" in the command line.

 - Update "remote-curl" to recognize and pass this option to "send-pack"
   when enabled.

 - Update "advise" to catch the reject reason "REJECT_REF_NEEDS_UPDATE",
set when the ref status is "REF_STATUS_REJECT_REMOTE_UPDATED" and
(optionally) print a help message when the push fails.

 - The new option is a "no-op" in the following scenarios:
    * When used without "--force-with-lease".
    * When used with "--force-with-lease", and if the expected commit
on the remote side is specified as an argument.

c972bf4cf5 strvec: convert remaining callers away from argv_array name
We eventually want to drop the argv_array name and just use strvec
consistently. There's no particular reason we have to do it all at once,
or care about interactions between converted and unconverted bits.
Because of our preprocessor compat layer, the names are interchangeable
to the compiler (so even a definition and declaration using different
names is OK).

This patch converts all of the remaining files, as the resulting diff is
reasonably sized.

The conversion was done purely mechanically with:

  git ls-files '*.c' '*.h' |
  xargs perl -i -pe '
    s/ARGV_ARRAY/STRVEC/g;
    s/argv_array/strvec/g;

9da69a6539 fetch-pack: support more than one pack lockfile
Whenever a fetch results in a packfile being downloaded, a .keep file is
generated, so that the packfile can be preserved (from, say, a running
"git repack") until refs are written referring to the contents of the
packfile.

In a subsequent patch, a successful fetch using protocol v2 may result
in more than one .keep file being generated. Therefore, teach
fetch_pack() and the transport mechanism to support multiple .keep
files.

Implementation notes:

 - builtin/fetch-pack.c normally does not generate .keep files, and thus
is unaffected by this or future changes. However, it has an
undocumented "--lock-pack" feature, used by remote-curl.c when
implementing the "fetch" remote helper command. In keeping with the
   remote helper protocol, only one "lock" line will ever be written;
the rest will result in warnings to stderr. However, in practice,
warnings will never be written because the remote-curl.c "fetch" is
only used for protocol v0/v1 (which will not generate multiple .keep
files). (Protocol v2 uses the "stateless-connect" command, not the
   "fetch" command.)

 - connected.c has an optimization in that connectivity checks on a ref
need not be done if the target object is in a pack known to be
self-contained and connected. If there are multiple packfiles, this
optimization can no longer be done.

6f1194246a remote-curl: pass on atomic capability to remote side
When pushing more than one reference with the --atomic option, the
server is supposed to perform a single atomic transaction to update the
references, leaving them either all to succeed or all to fail. This
works fine when pushing locally or over SSH, but when pushing over HTTP,
we fail to pass the atomic capability to the remote side. In fact, we
have not reported this capability to any remote helpers during the life
of the feature.

Now normally, things happen to work nevertheless, since we actually
check for most types of failures, such as non-fast-forward updates, on
the client side, and just abort the entire attempt. However, if the
server side reports a problem, such as the inability to lock a ref, the
transaction isn't atomic, because we haven't passed the appropriate
capability over and the remote side has no way of knowing that we wanted
atomic behavior.

Fix this by passing the option from the transport code through to remote
helpers, and from the HTTP remote helper down to send-pack. With this
change, we can detect if the server side rejects the push and report
back appropriately. Note the difference in the messages: the remote
side reports "atomic transaction failed", while our own checking rejects
pushes with the message "atomic push failed".

Document the atomic option in the remote helper documentation, so other
implementers can implement it if they like.

709dfa6990 object-store.h: move for_each_alternate_ref() from transport.h
There's nothing inherently transport-related about enumerating the
alternate ref tips. The code has lived in transport.[ch] because the
only use so far had been advertising available tips during transport.
But it could be used for more, and a future patch will teach rev-list to

Let's move it alongside the other alt-odb code, declaring it in
object-store.h with the implementation in sha1-file.c.

This lets us drop the inclusion of transport.h from receive-pack, which
perhaps shows how it was misplaced (though receive-pack is about

bdf4276c91 transport: drop refnames from for_each_alternate_ref

weird if you think about it: it's a ref in somebody else's repository.
So the name has no meaning locally, and in fact there may be duplicates

The users of this interface really only care about seeing some ref tips,
since that promises that the alternate has the full commit graph

e2842b39f4 fetch-pack: unify ref in and out param
When a user fetches:
 - at least one up-to-date ref and at least one non-up-to-date ref,
 - using HTTP with protocol v0 (or something else that uses the fetch
   command of a remote helper)
some refs might not be updated after the fetch.

This bug was introduced in commit 989b8c4452 ("fetch-pack: put shallow
info in output parameter", 2018-06-28) which allowed transports to
report the refs that they have fetched in a new out-parameter
"fetched_refs". If they do so, transport_fetch_refs() makes this
information available to its caller.

Users of "fetched_refs" rely on the following 3 properties:
 (1) it is the complete list of refs that was passed to
     transport_fetch_refs(),
 (2) it has shallow information (REF_STATUS_REJECT_SHALLOW set if
     relevant), and
 (3) it has updated OIDs if ref-in-want was used (introduced after
     989b8c4452).

In an effort to satisfy (1), whenever transport_fetch_refs()
filters the refs sent to the transport, it re-adds the filtered refs to
whatever the transport supplies before returning it to the user.
However, the implementation in 989b8c4452 unconditionally re-adds the
filtered refs without checking if the transport refrained from reporting
anything in "fetched_refs" (which it is allowed to do), resulting in an
incomplete list, no longer satisfying (1).

An earlier effort to resolve this [1] solved the issue by readding the
filtered refs only if the transport did not refrain from reporting in
"fetched_refs", but after further discussion, it seems that the better
solution is to revert the API change that introduced "fetched_refs".
This API change was first suggested as part of a ref-in-want
implementation that allowed for ref patterns and, thus, there could be
drastic differences between the input refs and the refs actually fetched
[2]; we eventually decided to only allow exact ref names, but this API
change remained even though its necessity was decreased.

Therefore, revert this API change by reverting commit 989b8c4452, and
make receive_wanted_refs() update the OIDs in the sought array (like how
update_shallow() updates shallow information in the sought array)
instead. A test is also included to show that the user-visible bug
discussed at the beginning of this commit message no longer exists.

3390e42adb fetch-pack: support negotiation tip whitelist
During negotiation, fetch-pack eventually reports as "have" lines all
commits reachable from all refs. Allow the user to restrict the commits
sent in this way by providing a whitelist of tips; only the tips
themselves and their ancestors will be sent.

Both globs and single objects are supported.

This feature is only supported for protocols that support connect or
stateless-connect (such as HTTP with protocol v2).

This will speed up negotiation when the repository has multiple
relatively independent branches (for example, when a repository
interacts with multiple repositories, such as with linux-next [1] and
torvalds/linux [2]), and the user knows which local branch is likely to
have commits in common with the upstream branch they are fetching.

cf1e7c0770 fetch-pack: write shallow, then check connectivity
When fetching, connectivity is checked after the shallow file is
updated. There are 2 issues with this: (1) the connectivity check is
only performed up to ancestors of existing refs (which is not thorough
enough if we were deepening an existing ref in the first place), and (2)
there is no rollback of the shallow file if the connectivity check
fails.

To solve (1), update the connectivity check to check the ancestry chain
completely in the case of a deepening fetch by refraining from passing
"--not --all" when invoking rev-list in connected.c.

To solve (2), have fetch_pack() perform its own connectivity check
before updating the shallow file. To support existing use cases in which
"git fetch-pack" is used to download objects without much regard as to
the connectivity of the resulting objects with respect to the existing
repository, the connectivity check is only done if necessary (that is,
the fetch is not a clone, and the fetch involves shallow/deepen
functionality). "git fetch" still performs its own connectivity check,
preserving correctness but sometimes performing redundant work. This
redundancy is mitigated by the fact that fetch_pack() reports if it has
performed a connectivity check itself, and if the transport supports
connect or stateless-connect, it will bubble up that report so that "git
fetch" knows not to perform the connectivity check in such a case.

This was noticed when a user tried to deepen an existing repository by
fetching with --no-shallow from a server that did not send all necessary
objects - the connectivity check as run by "git fetch" succeeded, but a
subsequent "git fsck" failed.

989b8c4452 fetch-pack: put shallow info in output parameter
Expand the transport fetch method signature, by adding an output
parameter, to allow transports to return information about the refs they
have fetched. Then communicate shallow status information through this
mechanism instead of by modifying the input list of refs.

This does require clients to sometimes generate the ref map twice: once
from the list of refs provided by the remote (as is currently done) and
potentially once from the new list of refs that the fetch mechanism
provides.

edc9caf7e2 transport-helper: introduce stateless-connect
Introduce the transport-helper capability 'stateless-connect'. This
capability indicates that the transport-helper can be requested to run
the 'stateless-connect' command which should attempt to make a
stateless connection with a remote end. Once established, the
connection can be used by the git client to communicate with
the remote end natively in a stateless-rpc manner as supported by
protocol v2. This means that the client must send everything the server
needs in a single request as the client must not assume any
state-storing on the part of the server or transport.

If a stateless connection cannot be established then the remote-helper
will respond in the same manner as the 'connect' command indicating that
the client should fallback to using the dumb remote-helper commands.

A future patch will implement the 'stateless-connect' capability in our
http remote-helper (remote-curl) so that protocol v2 can be used using
the http transport.

e967ca3847 transport: make transport vtable more private
Move the definition of the transport-specific functions provided by
transports, whether declared in transport.c or transport-helper.c, into
an internal header. This means that transport-using code (as opposed to
transport-declaring code) can no longer access these functions (without
importing the internal header themselves), making it clear that they
should use the transport_*() functions instead, and also allowing the
interface between the transport mechanism and an individual transport to
independently evolve.

This is superficially a reversal of commit 824d5776c3 ("Refactor
struct transport_ops inlined into struct transport", 2007-09-19).
However, the scope of the involved variables was neither affected nor
discussed in that commit, and I think that the advantages in making
those functions more private outweigh the advantages described in that
commit's commit message. A minor additional point is that the code has
gotten more complicated since then, in that the function-pointer
variables are potentially mutated twice (once initially and once if
transport_take_over() is invoked), increasing the value of corralling
them into their own struct.

88e2f9ed8e introduce fetch-object: fetch one promisor object
Introduce fetch-object, providing the ability to fetch one object from a
promisor remote.

This uses fetch-pack. To do this, the transport mechanism has been
updated with 2 flags, "from-promisor" to indicate that the resulting
pack comes from a promisor remote (and thus should be annotated as such
by index-pack), and "no-dependents" to indicate that only the objects
themselves need to be fetched (but fetching additional objects is
nevertheless safe).

Whenever "no-dependents" is used, fetch-pack will refrain from using any
object flags, because it is most likely invoked as part of a dynamic
object fetch by another Git command (which may itself use object flags).
An alternative to this is to leave fetch-pack alone, and instead update
the allocation of flags so that fetch-pack's flags never overlap with
any others, but this will end up shrinking the number of flags available
to nearly every other Git command (that is, every Git command that
accesses objects), so the approach in this commit was used instead.

This will be tested in a subsequent commit.

225e8bf778 push: add option to push only submodules
Teach push the --recurse-submodules=only option. This enables push
to recursively push all unpushed submodules while leaving the
superproject unpushed.

This is a desirable feature in a scenario where updates to the
superproject are handled automatically by some other means, perhaps
a tool like Gerrit code review. In this scenario, a developer could
make a change which spans multiple submodules and then push their
commits for code review. Upon completion of the code review, their
commits can be accepted and applied to their respective submodules
while the code review tool can then automatically update the
superproject to the most recent SHA1 of each submodule. This would
reduce the merge conflicts in the superproject that could occur if
multiple people are contributing to the same submodule.
