8145a8fd02 setup: remove unnecessary variable
The TODO comment suggested to heed core.bare from template config file
if no command line override given. And the prev_bare_repository
variable seems to have been placed for this sole purpose as it is not
used anywhere else.

However, it was clarified by Junio [1] that such values (including
core.bare) are ignored intentionally and does not make sense to
propagate them from template config to repository config. Also, the
directories for the worktree and repository are already created, and
therefore the bare/non-bare decision has already been made, by the
point we reach the codepath where the TODO comment is placed.
Therefore, prev_bare_repository does not have a usecase with/without
supporting core.bare from template. And the removal of
prev_bare_repository is safe as proved by the later part of the
comment:

    "Unfortunately, the line above is equivalent to
        is_bare_repository_cfg = !work_tree;
    which ignores the config entirely even if no `--[no-]bare`
    command line option was present.

    To see why, note that before this function, there was this call:
        prev_bare_repository = is_bare_repository()
    expanding the right hand side:
        = is_bare_repository_cfg && !get_git_work_tree()
        = is_bare_repository_cfg && !work_tree
    note that the last simplification above is valid because nothing
    calls repo_init() or set_git_work_tree() between any of the
    relevant calls in the code, and thus the !get_git_work_tree()
    calls will return the same result each time. So, what we are
    interested in computing is the right hand side of the line of
    code just above this comment:
        prev_bare_repository || !work_tree
        = is_bare_repository_cfg && !work_tree || !work_tree
        = !work_tree
    because "A && !B || !B == !B" for all boolean values of A & B."

Therefore, remove the TODO comment and remove prev_bare_repository
variable. Also, update relevant testcases and remove one redundant
testcase.

7854bf4960 i18n: factorize even more 'incompatible options' messages
Continue the work of 12909b6b8a (i18n: turn "options are incompatible"

same parameterized error message for reporting incompatible command line
options. This reduces the number of strings to translate and makes the

6789275d37 tests: teach callers of test_i18ngrep to use test_grep
They are equivalents and the former still exists, so as long as the
only change this commit makes are to rewrite test_i18ngrep to
test_grep, there won't be any new bug, even if there still are
callers of test_i18ngrep remaining in the tree, or when merged to
other topics that add new uses of test_i18ngrep.

This patch was produced more or less with

    git grep -l -e 'test_i18ngrep ' 't/t[0-9][0-9][0-9][0-9]-*.sh' |
    xargs perl -p -i -e 's/test_i18ngrep /test_grep /'

and a good way to sanity check the result yourself is to run the
above in a checkout of c4603c1c (test framework: further deprecate
test_i18ngrep, 2023-10-31) and compare the resulting working tree
contents with the result of applying this patch to the same commit.
You'll see that test_i18ngrep in a few t/lib-*.sh files corrected,
in addition to the manual reproduction.

0f7443bdc7 init-db: document existing bug with core.bare in template config
The comments in create_default_files() talks about reading config from
the config file in the specified `--templates` directory, which leads to
the question of whether core.bare could be set in such a config file and
thus whether the code is doing the right thing. It turns out, that it
doesn't; it unconditionally ignores core.bare in the config file in any
--templates directory. It is not clear to me that fixing it can be done
within this function; it seems to occur too late:
  * create_default_files() is called by init_db()
  * init_db() is called by both builtin/{clone.c,init-db.c}
  * both callers of init_db() call set_git_work_tree() before init_db()
and in order to actual affect whether a repository is bear, we'd need to
somewhere reset these values, not just the is_bare_repository_cfg
setting.

I do not want to open this can of worms at this time; I'm trying to
clean up some headers, for which I need to move some functions, for
which I need to clean up some globals, and that's far enough down the
rabbit hole. So, simply document the issue with a careful TODO comment
and a few testcases.

c65d18cb52 push: free_refs() the "local_refs" in set_refspecs()
Fix a memory leak that's been with us since this code was added in
ca02465b41 (push: use remote.$name.push as a refmap, 2013-12-03).

The "remote = remote_get(...)" added in the same commit would seem to
leak based only on the context here, but that function is a wrapper
for sticking the remotes we fetch into "the_repository->remote_state".

See fd3cb0501e (remote: move static variables into per-repository
struct, 2021-11-17) for the addition of code in repository.c that
free's the "remote" allocated here.

3b910d6e29 clone: allow "--bare" with "-o"
We explicitly forbid the combination of "--bare" with "-o", but there
doesn't seem to be any good reason to do so. The original logic came as
part of e6489a1bdf (clone: do not accept more than one -o option.,
2006-01-22), but that commit does not give any reason.

Furthermore, the equivalent combination via config is allowed:

  git -c clone.defaultRemoteName=foo clone ...

and works as expected. It may be that this combination was considered
useless, because a bare clone does not set remote.origin.fetch (and
hence there is no refs/remotes/origin hierarchy). But it does set
remote.origin.url, and that name is visible to the user via "git fetch
origin", etc.

Let's allow the options to be used together, and switch the "forbid"
test in t5606 to check that we use the requested name. That test came
much later in 349cff76de (clone: add tests for --template and some
disallowed option pairs, 2020-09-29), and does not offer any logic
beyond "let's test what the code currently does".

e21e663cd1 clone: --bundle-uri cannot be combined with --depth
A previous change added the '--bundle-uri' option, but did not check
if the --depth parameter was included. Since bundles are not compatible
with shallow clones, provide an error message to the user who is
attempting this combination.

I am leaving this as its own change, separate from the one that
implements '--bundle-uri', because this is more of an advisory for the
user. There is nothing wrong with bootstrapping with bundles and then
fetching a shallow clone. However, that is likely going to involve too
much work for the client _and_ the server. The client will download all
of this bundle information containing the full history of the
repository only to ignore most of it. The server will get a shallow
fetch request, but with a list of haves that might cause a more painful
computation of that shallow pack-file.

48072e3d68 clone: set submodule.recurse=true if submodule.stickyRecursiveClone enabled
Based on current experience, when running git clone --recurse-submodules,
developers do not expect other commands such as pull or checkout to run
recursively into active submodules. However, setting submodule.recurse=true
at this step could make for a simpler workflow by eliminating the need for
the --recurse-submodules option in subsequent commands. To collect more
data on developers' preference in regards to making submodule.recurse=true
a default config value in the future, deploy this feature under the opt in
submodule.stickyRecursiveClone flag.

4fe788b1b0 builtin/clone.c: add --reject-shallow option
In some scenarios, users may want more history than the repository
offered for cloning, which happens to be a shallow repository, can
give them. But because users don't know it is a shallow repository
until they download it to local, we may want to refuse to clone
this kind of repository, without creating any unnecessary files.

The '--depth=x' option cannot be used as a solution; the source may
be deep enough to give us 'x' commits when cloned, but the user may
later need to deepen the history to arbitrary depth.

Teach '--reject-shallow' option to "git clone" to abort as soon as
we find out that we are cloning from a shallow repository.

4f37d45706 ("clone: respect remote unborn HEAD", 2021-02-05) introduces
a new feature (if the remote has an unborn HEAD, e.g. when the remote
repository is empty, use it as the name of the branch) that only works
in protocol v2, but did not ensure that one of its tests always uses
protocol v2, and thus that test would fail if
GIT_TEST_PROTOCOL_VERSION=0 (or 1) is used. Therefore, add "-c

75555676ad builtin/init-db: handle bare clones when core.bare set to false
In 552955ed7f ("clone: use more conventional config/option layering",
2020-10-01), clone learned to read configuration options earlier in its
execution, before creating the new repository. However, that led to a
problem: if the core.bare setting is set to false in the global config,
cloning a bare repository segfaults. This happens because the
repository is falsely thought to be non-bare, but clone has set the work
tree to NULL, which is then dereferenced.

The code to initialize the repository already considers the fact that a
user might want to override the --bare option for git init, but it
doesn't take into account clone, which uses a different option. Let's
just check that the work tree is not NULL, since that's how clone
indicates that the repository is bare. This is also the case for git
init, so we won't be regressing that case.

334afbc76f tests: mark tests relying on the current default for init.defaultBranch
In addition to the manual adjustment to let the `linux-gcc` CI job run
the test suite with `master` and then with `main`, this patch makes sure
that GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME is set in all test scripts
that currently rely on the initial branch name being `master by default.

To determine which test scripts to mark up, the first step was to
force-set the default branch name to `master` in

- all test scripts that contain the keyword `master`,

- t4211, which expects `t/t4211/history.export` with a hard-coded ref to
  initialize the default branch,

- t5560 because it sources `t/t556x_common` which uses `master`,

- t8002 and t8012 because both source `t/annotate-tests.sh` which also
  uses `master`)

This trick was performed by this command:

	$ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/\(test-lib\|lib-\(bash\|cvs\|git-svn\)\|gitweb-lib\)\.sh$/i\
	GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\
	export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\
	' $(git grep -l master t/t[0-9]*.sh) \
	t/t4211*.sh t/t5560*.sh t/t8002*.sh t/t8012*.sh

After that, careful, manual inspection revealed that some of the test
scripts containing the needle `master` do not actually rely on a
specific default branch name: either they mention `master` only in a
comment, or they initialize that branch specificially, or they do not
actually refer to the current default branch. Therefore, the
aforementioned modification was undone in those test scripts thusly:

	$ git checkout HEAD -- \
		t/t0027-auto-crlf.sh t/t0060-path-utils.sh \
		t/t1011-read-tree-sparse-checkout.sh \

		t/t5511-refspec.sh t/t5526-fetch-submodules.sh \
		t/t5529-push-errors.sh t/t5530-upload-pack-error.sh \
		t/t5548-push-porcelain.sh \

		t/t5572-pull-submodule.sh t/t5608-clone-2gb.sh \
		t/t5614-clone-submodules-shallow.sh \
		t/t7508-status.sh t/t7606-merge-custom.sh \
		t/t9302-fast-import-unpack-limit.sh

We excluded one set of test scripts in these commands, though: the range
of `git p4` tests. The reason? `git p4` stores the (foreign) remote
branch in the branch called `p4/master`, which is obviously not the
default branch. Manual analysis revealed that only five of these tests
actually require a specific default branch name to pass; They were
modified thusly:

	$ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/lib-git-p4\.sh$/i\
	GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\
	export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\
	' t/t980[0167]*.sh t/t9811*.sh

704fed9ea2 tests: start moving to a different default main branch name
To allow for an incremental conversion to a new default main branch
name, let's introduce `GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_MAIN_BRANCH_NAME`. This
environment variable can be set at the top of each converted test
script, overriding the default main branch name to use when initializing
new repositories (or cloning empty repositories).

Note: the `GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_MAIN_BRANCH_NAME` is _not_ intended to be
used manually; many tests require a specific main branch name and cannot
simply work with another one. This `GIT_TEST_*` variable is meant purely
for the transitional period while the entire test suite is converted to
use `main` as the initial branch name by default.

We also introduce the `PREPARE_FOR_MAIN_BRANCH` prereq that determines
whether the default main branch name is `main`, and adjust a couple of
test functions to use it. This prereq will be used to temporarily
disable a couple test cases to allow for adjusting the test script
incrementally. Once an entire test is adjusted, we will adjust the test
so that it is run with `GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_MAIN_BRANCH_NAME=main`.

a471214bd6 remote: use the configured default branch name when appropriate
When guessing the default branch name of a remote, and there are no refs
to guess from, we want to go with the preference specified by the user
for the fall-back, i.e. the default name to be used for the initial
branch of new repositories (because as far as the user is concerned, a
remote that has no branches yet is a new repository).

At the same time, when talking to an older Git server that does not
report a symref for `HEAD` (but instead reports a commit hash), let's
try to guess the configured default branch name first. If it does not
match the reported commit hash, let's fall back to `master` as before.

8fbb03a180 clone tests: rename t57* => t56*
When trying to find a good spot for testing clone with submodules, I
got confused where to add a new test file. There are both tests in t560*
as well as t57* both testing the clone command. t/README claims the
second digit is to indicate the command, which is inconsistent to the
current naming structure.

Rename all t57* tests to be in t56* to follow the pattern of the digits
as laid out in t/README.

It would have been less work to rename t56* => t57* because there are less
files, but the tests in t56* look more basic and I assumed the higher the
last digits the more complicated niche details are tested, so with the patch
now it looks more in order to me.
