7cc8f97108 pack-objects: implement bitmap writing
This commit extends more the functionality of `pack-objects` by allowing
it to write out a `.bitmap` index next to any written packs, together
with the `.idx` index that currently gets written.

If bitmap writing is enabled for a given repository (either by calling
`pack-objects` with the `--write-bitmap-index` flag or by having
`pack.writebitmaps` set to `true` in the config) and pack-objects is
writing a packfile that would normally be indexed (i.e. not piping to
stdout), we will attempt to write the corresponding bitmap index for the
packfile.

Bitmap index writing happens after the packfile and its index has been
successfully written to disk (`finish_tmp_packfile`). The process is
performed in several steps:

    1. `bitmap_writer_set_checksum`: this call stores the partial
checksum for the packfile being written; the checksum will be
written in the resulting bitmap index to verify its integrity

    2. `bitmap_writer_build_type_index`: this call uses the array of
`struct object_entry` that has just been sorted when writing out
the actual packfile index to disk to generate 4 type-index bitmaps
       (one for each object type).

These bitmaps have their nth bit set if the given object is of
the bitmap's type. E.g. the nth bit of the Commits bitmap will be
1 if the nth object in the packfile index is a commit.

This is a very cheap operation because the bitmap writing code has
access to the metadata stored in the `struct object_entry` array,
and hence the real type for each object in the packfile.

    3. `bitmap_writer_reuse_bitmaps`: if there exists an existing bitmap
index for one of the packfiles we're trying to repack, this call
will efficiently rebuild the existing bitmaps so they can be
reused on the new index. All the existing bitmaps will be stored
in a `reuse` hash table, and the commit selection phase will
prioritize these when selecting, as they can be written directly
to the new index without having to perform a revision walk to
fill the bitmap. This can greatly speed up the repack of a
       repository that already has bitmaps.

    4. `bitmap_writer_select_commits`: if bitmap writing is enabled for
a given `pack-objects` run, the sequence of commits generated
during the Counting Objects phase will be stored in an array.

We then use that array to build up the list of selected commits.
Writing a bitmap in the index for each object in the repository
would be cost-prohibitive, so we use a simple heuristic to pick
the commits that will be indexed with bitmaps.

The current heuristics are a simplified version of JGit's
original implementation. We select a higher density of commits
depending on their age: the 100 most recent commits are always
selected, after that we pick 1 commit of each 100, and the gap
increases as the commits grow older. On top of that, we make sure
that every single branch that has not been merged (all the tips
that would be required from a clone) gets their own bitmap, and
when selecting commits between a gap, we tend to prioritize the
       commit with the most parents.

Do note that there is no right/wrong way to perform commit
selection; different selection algorithms will result in
different commits being selected, but there's no such thing as
"missing a commit". The bitmap walker algorithm implemented in
`prepare_bitmap_walk` is able to adapt to missing bitmaps by
performing manual walks that complete the bitmap: the ideal
selection algorithm, however, would select the commits that are
more likely to be used as roots for a walk in the future (e.g.
the tips of each branch, and so on) to ensure a bitmap for them
       is always available.

    5. `bitmap_writer_build`: this is the computationally expensive part
of bitmap generation. Based on the list of commits that were
selected in the previous step, we perform several incremental
walks to generate the bitmap for each commit.

The walks begin from the oldest commit, and are built up
incrementally for each branch. E.g. consider this dag where A, B,
       C, D, E, F are the selected commits, and a, b, c, e are a chunk
of simplified history that will not receive bitmaps.

            A---a---B--b--C--c--D
                     \
                      E--e--F

We start by building the bitmap for A, using A as the root for a
revision walk and marking all the objects that are reachable
until the walk is over. Once this bitmap is stored, we reuse the
bitmap walker to perform the walk for B, assuming that once we
reach A again, the walk will be terminated because A has already
been SEEN on the previous walk.

This process is repeated for C, and D, but when we try to
generate the bitmaps for E, we can reuse neither the current walk
nor the bitmap we have generated so far.

What we do now is resetting both the walk and clearing the
bitmap, and performing the walk from scratch using E as the
origin. This new walk, however, does not need to be completed.
Once we hit B, we can lookup the bitmap we have already stored
for that commit and OR it with the existing bitmap we've composed
so far, allowing us to limit the walk early.

After all the bitmaps have been generated, another iteration
through the list of commits is performed to find the best XOR
offsets for compression before writing them to disk. Because of
the incremental nature of these bitmaps, XORing one of them with
its predecesor results in a minimal "bitmap delta" most of the
time. We can write this delta to the on-disk bitmap index, and
then re-compose the original bitmaps by XORing them again when
       loaded.

This is a phase very similar to pack-object's `find_delta` (using
bitmaps instead of objects, of course), except the heuristics
have been greatly simplified: we only check the 10 bitmaps before
any given one to find best compressing one. This gives good
results in practice, because there is locality in the ordering of
the objects (and therefore bitmaps) in the packfile.

     6. `bitmap_writer_finish`: the last step in the process is
serializing to disk all the bitmap data that has been generated
	in the two previous steps.

The bitmap is written to a tmp file and then moved atomically to
its final destination, using the same process as
	`pack-write.c:write_idx_file`.

fff42755ef pack-bitmap: add support for bitmap indexes
A bitmap index is a `.bitmap` file that can be found inside
`$GIT_DIR/objects/pack/`, next to its corresponding packfile, and
contains precalculated reachability information for selected commits.
The full specification of the format for these bitmap indexes can be found
in `Documentation/technical/bitmap-format.txt`.

For a given commit SHA1, if it happens to be available in the bitmap
index, its bitmap will represent every single object that is reachable
from the commit itself. The nth bit in the bitmap is the nth object in
the packfile; if it's set to 1, the object is reachable.

By using the bitmaps available in the index, this commit implements
several new functions:

	- `prepare_bitmap_git`
	- `prepare_bitmap_walk`
	- `traverse_bitmap_commit_list`
	- `reuse_partial_packfile_from_bitmap`

The `prepare_bitmap_walk` function tries to build a bitmap of all the
objects that can be reached from the commit roots of a given `rev_info`
struct by using the following algorithm:

- If all the interesting commits for a revision walk are available in
the index, the resulting reachability bitmap is the bitwise OR of all
the individual bitmaps.

- When the full set of WANTs is not available in the index, we perform a
partial revision walk using the commits that don't have bitmaps as
roots, and limiting the revision walk as soon as we reach a commit that
has a corresponding bitmap. The earlier OR'ed bitmap with all the
indexed commits can now be completed as this walk progresses, so the end
result is the full reachability list.

- For revision walks with a HAVEs set (a set of commits that are deemed
uninteresting), first we perform the same method as for the WANTs, but
using our HAVEs as roots, in order to obtain a full reachability bitmap
of all the uninteresting commits. This bitmap then can be used to:

	a) limit the subsequent walk when building the WANTs bitmap
	b) finding the final set of interesting commits by performing an
AND-NOT of the WANTs and the HAVEs.

If `prepare_bitmap_walk` runs successfully, the resulting bitmap is
stored and the equivalent of a `traverse_commit_list` call can be
performed by using `traverse_bitmap_commit_list`; the bitmap version
of this call yields the objects straight from the packfile index
(without having to look them up or parse them) and hence is several
orders of magnitude faster.

As an extra optimization, when `prepare_bitmap_walk` succeeds, the
`reuse_partial_packfile_from_bitmap` call can be attempted: it will find
the amount of objects at the beginning of the on-disk packfile that can
be reused as-is, and return an offset into the packfile. The source
packfile can then be loaded and the bytes up to `offset` can be written
directly to the result without having to consider the entires inside the
packfile individually.

If the `prepare_bitmap_walk` call fails (e.g. because no bitmap files
are available), the `rev_info` struct is left untouched, and can be used
to perform a manual rev-walk using `traverse_commit_list`.

Hence, this new set of functions are a generic API that allows to
perform the equivalent of

	git rev-list --objects [roots...] [^uninteresting...]

for any set of commits, even if they don't have specific bitmaps
generated for them.

In further patches, we'll use this bitmap traversal optimization to
speed up the `pack-objects` and `rev-list` commands.

e1273106f6 ewah: compressed bitmap implementation
EWAH is a word-aligned compressed variant of a bitset (i.e. a data
structure that acts as a 0-indexed boolean array for many entries).

It uses a 64-bit run-length encoding (RLE) compression scheme,
trading some compression for better processing speed.

The goal of this word-aligned implementation is not to achieve
the best compression, but rather to improve query processing time.
As it stands right now, this EWAH implementation will always be more
efficient storage-wise than its uncompressed alternative.

EWAH arrays will be used as the on-disk format to store reachability
bitmaps for all objects in a repository while keeping reasonable sizes,
in the same way that JGit does.

This EWAH implementation is a mostly straightforward port of the
original `javaewah` library that JGit currently uses. The library is
self-contained and has been embedded whole (4 files) inside the `ewah`
folder to ease redistribution.

The library is re-licensed under the GPLv2 with the permission of Daniel
Lemire, the original author. The source code for the C version can
be found on GitHub:

The original Java implementation can also be found on GitHub:

bb5d531efa stop installing git-tar-tree link
When the built-in "git tar-tree" command (a thin wrapper around "git
archive") was removed in 925ceccf (tar-tree: remove deprecated
command, 2013-11-10), the build continued to install a non-functioning
git-tar-tree command in gitexecdir by mistake:

	$ PATH=$(git --exec-path):$PATH
	$ git-tar-tree -h
	fatal: cannot handle tar-tree internally

The list of links in gitexecdir is populated from BUILTIN_OBJS, which
includes builtin/tar-tree.o to implement "git get-tar-commit-id".
Rename the get-tar-commit-id source file to builtin/get-tar-commit-id.c

6a364ced49 add a hashtable implementation that supports O(1) removal
The existing hashtable implementation (in hash.[ch]) uses open addressing
(i.e. resolve hash collisions by distributing entries across the table).
Thus, removal is difficult to implement with less than O(n) complexity.
Resolving collisions of entries with identical hashes (e.g. via chaining)
is left to the client code.

Add a hashtable implementation that supports O(1) removal and is slightly
easier to use due to builtin entry chaining.

Supports all basic operations init, free, get, add, remove and iteration.

Also includes ready-to-use hash functions based on the public domain FNV-1
algorithm (http://www.isthe.com/chongo/tech/comp/fnv).

The per-entry data structure (hashmap_entry) is piggybacked in front of
the client's data structure to save memory. See test-hashmap.c for usage
examples.

The hashtable is resized by a factor of four when 80% full. With these
settings, average memory consumption is about 2/3 of hash.[ch], and
insertion is about twice as fast due to less frequent resizing.

Lookups are also slightly faster, because entries are strictly confined to
their bucket (i.e. no data of other buckets needs to be traversed).

2834bc27c1 pack-objects: refactor the packing list
The hash table that stores the packing list for a given `pack-objects`
run was tightly coupled to the pack-objects code.

In this commit, we refactor the hash table and the underlying storage
array into a `packing_data` struct. The functionality for accessing and
adding entries to the packing list is hence accessible from other parts
of Git besides the `pack-objects` builtin.

This refactoring is a requirement for further patches in this series
that will require accessing the commit packing list from outside of
`pack-objects`.

The hash table implementation has been minimally altered: we now
use table sizes which are always a power of two, to ensure a uniform
index distribution in the array.

9371322a60 sparse: suppress some "using sizeof on a function" warnings
Sparse issues an "using sizeof on a function" warning for each
call to curl_easy_setopt() which sets an option that takes a
function pointer parameter. (currently 12 such warnings over 4
files.)

The warnings relate to the use of the "typecheck-gcc.h" header
file which adds a layer of type-checking macros to the curl
function invocations (for gcc >= 4.3 and !__cplusplus). As part
of the type-checking layer, 'sizeof' is applied to the function
parameter of curl_easy_setopt(). Note that, in the context of
sizeof, the function to function pointer conversion is not
performed and that sizeof(f) != sizeof(&f).

A simple solution, therefore, would be to replace the function
name in each such call to curl_easy_setopt() with an explicit
function pointer expression (i.e. replace f with &f).

However, the "typecheck-gcc.h" header file is only conditionally
included, in addition to the gcc and C++ checks mentioned above,
depending on the CURL_DISABLE_TYPECHECK preprocessor variable.

In order to suppress the warnings, we use target-specific variable
assignments to add -DCURL_DISABLE_TYPECHECK to SPARSE_FLAGS for
each file affected (http-push.c, http.c, http-walker.c and
remote-curl.c).

a1bbc6c017 repack: rewrite the shell script in C
The motivation of this patch is to get closer to a goal of being
able to have a core subset of git functionality built in to git.
That would mean

 * people on Windows could get a copy of at least the core parts

 * people using git in on servers with chrooted environments
do not need to worry about standard tools lacking for shell

ae34ac126f git_remote_helpers: remove little used Python library
When it was originally added, the git_remote_helpers library was used as
part of the tests of the remote-helper interface, but since commit
fc407f9 (Add new simplified git-remote-testgit, 2012-11-28) a simple
shell script is used for this.

A search on Ohloh [1] indicates that this library isn't used by any
external projects and even the Python remote helpers in contrib/ don't
use this library, so it is only used by its own test suite.

Since this is the only Python library in Git, removing it will make
packaging easier as the Python scripts only need to be installed for one
version of Python, whereas the library should be installed for all
available versions.

f66450ae94 cygwin: Remove the Win32 l/stat() implementation
Commit adbc0b6b ("cygwin: Use native Win32 API for stat", 30-09-2008)
added a Win32 specific implementation of the stat functions. In order
to handle absolute paths, cygwin mount points and symbolic links, this
implementation may fall back on the standard cygwin l/stat() functions.
Also, the choice of cygwin or Win32 functions is made lazily (by the
first call(s) to l/stat) based on the state of some config variables.

Unfortunately, this "schizophrenic stat" implementation has been the
source of many problems ever since. For example, see commits 7faee6b8,
79748439, 452993c2, 085479e7, b8a97333, 924aaf3e, 05bab3ea and 0117c2f0.

In order to avoid further problems, such as the issue raised by the new
reference handling API, remove the Win32 l/stat() implementation.

226ad3482a builtin: add git-check-mailmap command
Introduce command check-mailmap, similar to check-attr and check-ignore,
which allows direct testing of .mailmap configuration.

As plumbing accessible to scripts and other porcelain, check-mailmap
publishes the stable, well-tested .mailmap functionality employed by
built-in Git commands. Consequently, script authors need not
re-implement .mailmap functionality manually, thus avoiding potential
quirks and behavioral differences.

It has already been used to help the transision and served its

the majority of remaining matches it finds are false positives.

49c2470400 Move copy_note_for_rewrite + friends from builtin/notes.c to notes-utils.c
This is a pure code movement of the machinery for copying notes to
rewritten objects. This code was located in builtin/notes.c for
historical reasons. In order to make it available to builtin/commit.c
it was declared in builtin.h. This was more of an accident of history
than a concious design, and we now want to make this machinery more
widely available.

Hence, this patch moves the code into the new notes-utils.[hc] files
which are included into libgit.a. Except for adjusting #includes
accordingly, this patch merely moves the relevant functions verbatim
into the new files.

b4b594a315 prio-queue: priority queue of pointers to structs
Traditionally we used a singly linked list of commits to hold a set
of in-flight commits while traversing history. The most typical use
of the list is to add commits that are newly discovered to it, keep
the list sorted by commit timestamp, pick up the newest one from the
list, and keep digging. The cost of keeping the singly linked list
sorted is nontrivial, and this typical use pattern better matches a
priority queue.

Introduce a prio-queue structure, that can be used either as a LIFO
stack, or a priority queue. This will be used in the next patch to
hold in-flight commits during sort-in-topological-order.

Tests and the idea to make it usable for any "void *" pointers to
"things" are by Jeff King. Bugs are mine.

Commit 416fda6 (build: do not install git-remote-testpy) made it so
git-remote-testpy is not only not installed, but also not generated

This was not found primarily because "make clean" failed to remove

4dcd7732db Makefile: add support for Apple CommonCrypto facility
As of Mac OS X 10.7, Apple deprecated all OpenSSL functions due to
OpenSSL ABI instability, thus leading to build warnings. As a
replacement, Apple encourages developers to migrate to its own (stable)

Introduce boilerplate which controls whether Apple's CommonCrypto
facility is employed (enabled by default). Also add a
NO_APPLE_COMMON_CRYPTO build flag with which the user can opt out to
use OpenSSL instead.

6c642a8786 compate/clipped-write.c: large write(2) fails on Mac OS X/XNU
Due to a bug in the Darwin kernel, write(2) calls have a maximum size

Introduce a new compat function, clipped_write(), that only writes

a substitute for write(2), and allow platforms that need this to
enable it from the build mechanism with NEEDS_CLIPPED_WRITE.

Set it for Mac OS X by default. It may be necessary to include this

If the user sets DEFAULT_TEST_TARGET=prove in his config.mak, that

dcbe7f1ab8 coverage: do not delete .gcno files before building
The coverage-compile target depends on coverage-clean, which is
supposed to remove the earlier build products that would get in the
way of the next coverage test run.

However, removing *.gcno is actively wrong. These are the files that
contain the compile-time coverage related data. They are only rebuilt
if the source is compiled. So if one ran 'make coverage' two times in
a row, the second run would remove *.gcno, but then fail to recreate
them because neither source files nor build flags have changed. (This
remained hidden for so long most likely because any other intervening
use of 'make' will change the build flags, causing a full rebuild.)

So we make an exception for *.gcno. The *.gcda are the coverage
results, written when the gcov-instrumented program is run. We still
remove those, so as to get a one-test-run view of the data; you could
probably argue the other way too.

83ff1da3e8 cygwin: Remove the CYGWIN_V15_WIN32API build variable
Commit 380a4d92 ("Update cygwin.c for new mingw-64 win32 api headers",
11-11-2012) solved an header include order problem on cygwin 1.7 when
using the new mingw-64 WIN32 API headers. The solution involved using
a new build variable (V15_MINGW_HEADERS) to conditionally compile the
cygwin.c source file to use an include order appropriate for the old
and new header files. (The build variable was later renamed in commit
9fca6cff to CYGWIN_V15_WIN32API).

The include order used for cygwin 1.7 includes the "win32.h" header
before "../git-compat-util.h". This order was problematic on cygwin
1.5, since it lead to the WIN32 symbol being defined along with the
inclusion of some WIN32 API headers (e.g. <winsock2.h>) which cause
compilation errors.

The header include order problem on cygwin 1.5 has since been fixed
(see commit "mingw: rename WIN32 cpp macro to GIT_WINDOWS_NATIVE"),
so we can now remove the conditional compilation along with the
associated CYGWIN_V15_WIN32API build variable.

2d14e13c56 test output: respect $TEST_OUTPUT_DIRECTORY
Most test results go in $TEST_OUTPUT_DIRECTORY, but the output files for
tests run with --tee or --valgrind just use bare "test-results".
Changes these so that they do respect $TEST_OUTPUT_DIRECTORY.

As a result of this, the valgrind/analyze.sh script may no longer
inspect the correct files so it is also updated to respect
$TEST_OUTPUT_DIRECTORY by adding it to GIT-BUILD-OPTIONS. This may be a
regression for people who have TEST_OUTPUT_DIRECTORY in their config.mak
but want to override it in the environment, but this change merely
brings it into line with GIT_TEST_OPTS which already cannot be
overridden if it is specified in config.mak.

241c957d89 compat/nedmalloc: Fix some sparse warnings
Sparse issues many "Using plain integer as NULL pointer" warnings
while checking nedmalloc.c (at least 98 such warnings before giving
up due to "too many warnings"). In addition, sparse issues some
"non-ANSI function declaration" type warnings for the symbols
'win32_getcurrentthreadid', 'malloc_stats' and 'malloc_footprint'.

In order to suppress the NULL pointer warnings, rather than replace
all uses of '0' as a null pointer representation with NULL, we add
-Wno-non-pointer-null to SPARSE_FLAGS while checking nedmalloc.c.

In order to suppress the "non-ANSI function declaration" warnings,
we simply include the missing 'empty parameter list' prototype (void)
in the function declarations.

12da1d1f6f Implement line-history search (git log -L)
This is a rewrite of much of Bo's work, mainly in an effort to split
it into smaller, easier to understand routines.

The algorithm is built around the struct range_set, which encodes a
series of line ranges as intervals [a,b). This is used in two
contexts:

* A set of lines we are tracking (which will change as we dig through
  history).
* To encode diffs, as pairs of ranges.

The main routine is range_set_map_across_diff(). It processes the
diff between a commit C and some parent P. It determines which diff
hunks are relevant to the ranges tracked in C, and computes the new
ranges for P.

The algorithm is then simply to process history in topological order
from newest to oldest, computing ranges and (partial) diffs. At
branch points, we need to merge the ranges we are watching. We will
find that many commits do not affect the chosen ranges, and mark them
TREESAME (in addition to those already filtered by pathspec limiting).
Another pass of history simplification then gets rid of such commits.

This is wired as an extra filtering pass in the log machinery. This
currently only reduces code duplication, but should allow for other
simplifications and options to be used.

Finally, we hook a diff printer into the output chain. Ideally we
would wire directly into the diff logic, to optionally use features
like word diff. However, that will require some major reworking of
the diff chain, so we completely replace the output with our own diff
for now.

As this was a GSoC project, and has quite some history by now, many
people have helped. In no particular order, thanks go to

25ed3412f8 Refactor parse_loc
We want to use the same style of -L n,m argument for 'git log -L' as
for git-blame. Refactor the argument parsing of the range arguments
from builtin/blame.c to the (new) file that will hold the 'git log -L'
logic.

To accommodate different data structures in blame and log -L, the file
contents are abstracted away; parse_range_arg takes a callback that it
uses to get the contents of a line of the (notional) file.

The new test is for a case that made me pause during debugging: the
'blame -L with invalid end' test was the only one that noticed an
outright failure to parse the end *at all*. So make a more explicit
test for that.

7f1b697632 Makefile: avoid infinite loop on configure.ac change
If you are using autoconf and change the configure.ac, the
Makefile will notice that config.status is older than
configure.ac, and will attempt to rebuild and re-run the
configure script to pick up your changes. The first step in
doing so is to run "make configure". Unfortunately, this
tries to include config.mak.autogen, which depends on
config.status, which depends on configure.ac; so we must
rebuild config.status. Which leads to us running "make
configure", and so on.

It's easy to demonstrate with:

  make configure
  ./configure
  touch configure.ac
  make

We can break this cycle by not re-invoking make to build
"configure", and instead just putting its rules inline into
our config.status rebuild procedure. We can avoid a copy by
factoring the rules into a make variable.

6978934713 Makefile: explicitly set target name for autogenerated dependencies
"gcc -MF depfile -MMD -MP -c -o path/to/file.o" produces a makefile
snippet named "depfile" describing what files are needed to build the
target given by "-o". When ccache versions before v3.0pre0~187 (Fix
handling of the -MD and -MDD options, 2009-11-01) run, they execute

gcc -MF depfile -MMD -MP -E

instead to get the final content for hashing. Notice that the "-c -o"
combination is replaced by "-E". The result is a target name without
a leading path.

Thus when building git with such versions of ccache with
COMPUTE_HEADER_DEPENDENCIES enabled, the generated makefile snippets
define dependencies for the wrong target:

	$ make builtin/add.o
	GIT_VERSION = 1.7.8.rc3
	    * new build flags or prefix
	    CC builtin/add.o
	$ head -1 builtin/.depend/add.o.d
	add.o: builtin/add.c cache.h git-compat-util.h compat/bswap.h strbuf.h \

After a change in a header file, object files in a subdirectory are
not automatically rebuilt by "make":

	$ touch cache.h
	$ make builtin/add.o
	$

Luckily we can prevent trouble by explicitly supplying the name of the
target to ccache and gcc, using the -MQ option. Do so.

6f525e7100 add.c: move pathspec matchers into new pathspec.c for reuse
Extract the following functions from builtin/add.c to pathspec.c, in
preparation for reuse by a new git check-ignore command:

  - fill_pathspec_matches()
  - find_used_pathspec()

The functions being extracted are not changed in any way, except
removal of the 'static' qualifier.

Also add comments documenting these newly public functions,
including clarifications that they operate on the index.

49a370d73a Makefile: add comment on CYGWIN_V15_WIN32API
There is no documented, reliable, and future-proof method to
determine the installed w32api version on Cygwin. There are many
things that can be done that will work frequently, except when they
won't.

The only sane thing is to follow the guidance of the Cygwin
developers: the only supported configuration is that which the
current setup.exe produces, and in the case of problems, if the
installation is not up to date then updating is the first required
action.

e1b6dbb554 Makefile: hoist uname autodetection to config.mak.uname
Our Makefile first sets up some sane per-platform defaults
by looking at "uname", then modifies that according to the
results of autoconf (if any), then modifies that according
to the user's wishes in config.mak.

For sub-Makefiles like Documentation/Makefile, the latter
two are available, but the uname defaults are available only
to the main Makefile. This hasn't been a problem so far,
because the sub-Makefiles do not rely on any of those
automatic settings to do their work.

This patch puts the uname magic into its own file so it can
be reused in other Makefiles, opening up the possibility of
new knobs.

Note that we leave one reference to uname in the top-level
Makefile: if we are on Darwin, we must check the NO_FINK and
NO_DARWIN_PORTS settings. But because we are combining uname
settings with user-options, we must do so after all of the
config is loaded. This is acceptable, as the resulting
conditionals are about setting variables specific to the
top-level Makefile (and if that ever changes, we can hoist
them into a separate post-config include, too).

122650457a build: do not automatically reconfigure unless configure.ac changed
Starting with v1.7.12-rc0~4^2 (build: reconfigure automatically if
configure.ac changes, 2012-07-19), "config.status --recheck" is
automatically run every time the "configure" script changes. In
particular, that means the configuration procedure repeats whenever
the version number changes (since the configure script changes to
support "./configure --version" and "./configure --help"), making
bisecting painfully slow.

The intent was to make the reconfiguration process only trigger for
changes to configure.ac's logic. Tweak the Makefile rule to match
that intent by depending on configure.ac instead of configure.

b2d05e0653 git-compat-util.h: do not #include <sys/param.h> by default
Earlier we allowed platforms that lack <sys/param.h> not to include
the header file from git-compat-util.h; we have included this header
file since the early days back when we used MAXPATHLEN (which we no
longer use) and also depended on it slurping ULONG_MAX (which we get
by including stdint.h or inttypes.h these days).

It turns out that we can compile our modern codebase just file
without including it on many platforms (so far, Fedora, Debian,
Ubuntu, MinGW, Mac OS X, Cygwin, HP-Nonstop, QNX and z/OS are
reported to be OK).

Let's stop including it by default, and on platforms that need it to
be included, leave "make NEEDS_SYS_PARAM_H=YesPlease" as an escape
hatch and ask them to report to us, so that we can find out about
the real dependency and fix it in a more platform agnostic way.

96a4647fca Makefile: detect when PYTHON_PATH changes
When make is run, the python scripts are created from *.py files that
are changed to use the python given by PYTHON_PATH. And PYTHON_PATH
is set by default to /usr/bin/python on Linux.

This is nice except when you run make another time setting a
different PYTHON_PATH, because, as the python scripts have already
been created, make finds nothing to do.

The goal of this patch is to detect when the PYTHON_PATH changes and
to create the python scripts again when this happens. To do that we
use the same trick that is done to track other variables like prefix,
flags, tcl/tk path and shell path. We update a GIT-PYTHON-VARS file
with the PYTHON_PATH and check if it changed.

fa2364ec34 Which merge_file() function do you mean?
There are two different static functions and one global function,
all of them called "merge_file()", with different signatures and
purposes. Rename them all to reduce confusion in "git grep" output:

 * Rename the static one in merge-index to "merge_one_path(const char
*path)" as that function is about asking an external command to
   resolve conflicts in one path.

 * Rename the global one in merge-file.c that is only used by
merge-tree to "merge_blobs()", as the function takes three blobs and
returns the merged result only in-core, without doing anything to
   the filesystem.

 * Rename the one in merge-recursive to "merge_one_file()", just to be
   fair.

Also rename merge-file.[ch] to merge-blobs.[ch].

So let's use a more appropriate name: git-remote-testpy.

380a4d927b Update cygwin.c for new mingw-64 win32 api headers
The cygwin project recently switched to a new implementation of the
windows api, now using header files from the mingw-64 project. These
new header files are incompatible with the way cygwin.c included the
old headers: cygwin.c can be compiled using the new or the older (mingw)
headers, but different files must be included in different order for each
to work. The new headers are in use only for the current release series
(based upon the v1.7.x dll version). The previous release series using
the v1.5 dll is kept available but unmaintained for use on older versions
of Windows. So, patch cygwin.c to use the new include ordering only if
the dll version is 1.7 or higher.

5fafce0b78 check-docs: get documented command list from Makefile
The current code tries to get a list of documented commands
by doing "ls Documentation/git*txt" and culling a bunch of
special cases from the result. Looking for "git-*.txt" would
be more accurate, but would miss a few commands like
"gitweb" and "gitk".

Fortunately, Documentation/Makefile already knows what this
list is, so we can just ask it. Annoyingly, we still have to
post-process its output a little, since make will print
extra cruft like "GIT-VERSION-FILE is up to date" to stdout.

Now that our list is accurate, we can remove all of the ugly
special-cases.

7d02b574f4 check-docs: drop git-help special-case
The check-docs target special-cases git-help to avoid

Early versions of block-sha1/ explicitly relied on fast htonl() and
fast 32-bit loads with arbitrary alignment. Now it uses those on some
arches but the default behavior is byte-at-a-time access for the sake
of arches like ARM, Alpha, and their kin and it is still pretty fast
on these arches (fast enough to supersede the mozilla SHA1

Those filed hold variables, settings and information set by the

build system that kind of stuff should only be removed by
"make distclean". Having it removed by "make clean" is not only
inconsistent, but causes real confusion for that part of the Git
audience that is used to the Autotools semantics; for example,
an autotools old-timer that has run:

    ./configure --prefix /opt/git

in the past, without running "make distclean" afterwards, would
expect a "make install" issued after a "make clean" to rebuild and
install git in '/opt/git'; but with the current behaviour, the
"make clean" invocation removes (among the other things) the file
'config.mak.autogen', so that the "make install" falls back to the
default prefix of '$HOME', thus installing git in the user's home
directory -- definitely unexpected.

c0219dd5d8 Makefile: apply dependencies consistently to sparse/asm targets
When a C file "foo.c" depends on a generated header file, we
note the dependency for the "foo.o" target. However, we
should also note it for other targets that are built from
foo.c, like "foo.sp" and "foo.s". These tend to be missed
because the latter two are not part of the default build,
and are typically built after a regular build which will
generate the header. Let's be consistent about including
them in dependencies.

This also makes us more consistent with nearby lines which
tack on EXTRA_CPPFLAGS when building certain files. These
flags may sometimes require extra dependencies to be added
(e.g., like GIT-VERSION-FILE; this is not the case for any
of the updated lines in this patch, but it is establishing a
style that will be used in later patches). Technically the
".sp" and ".s" targets do not care about these dependencies,
because they are force-built (".sp" because it is a phony
target, and ".s" because we explicitly force a rebuild).

Since the blocks in question are about communicating "things
built from foo.c depend on these flags", it frees the reader
from having to know or care more about how those targets are
implemented, and why it is OK for only "foo.o" to depend on
GIT-VERSION-FILE while "foo.sp" and "foo.s" both are
impacted by $(GIT_VERSION). And it helps future-proof us if
those force-build details should ever change.

This patch explicitly does not update the static header
dependencies used when COMPUTED_HEADER_DEPENDENCIES is off.
They are similar to the GIT-VERSION-FILE case above, in that
technically "foo.s" would depend on its included headers,
but it is irrelevant because we force-build it anyway. So it
would be tempting to update them in the same way (for
readability and future-proofing). However, those rules are
meant as a fallback to the computed header dependencies,
which do not handle ".s" and ".sp" at all (and are a much
harder problem to solve, as gcc is the one generating those
dependency lists).

So let's leave that harder problem until (and if) somebody
wants to change the ".sp" and ".s" rules, and keep the
static header dependencies consistent with the computed
ones.

76759c7dff git on Mac OS and precomposed unicode
Mac OS X mangles file names containing unicode on file systems HFS+,
VFAT or SAMBA. When a file using unicode code points outside ASCII
is created on a HFS+ drive, the file name is converted into
decomposed unicode and written to disk. No conversion is done if
the file name is already decomposed unicode.

Calling open("\xc3\x84", ...) with a precomposed "Ä" yields the same
result as open("\x41\xcc\x88",...) with a decomposed "Ä".

As a consequence, readdir() returns the file names in decomposed
unicode, even if the user expects precomposed unicode. Unlike on
HFS+, Mac OS X stores files on a VFAT drive (e.g. an USB drive) in
precomposed unicode, but readdir() still returns file names in
decomposed unicode. When a git repository is stored on a network
share using SAMBA, file names are send over the wire and written to
disk on the remote system in precomposed unicode, but Mac OS X
readdir() returns decomposed unicode to be compatible with its
behaviour on HFS+ and VFAT.

The unicode decomposition causes many problems:

- The names "git add" and other commands get from the end user may
often be precomposed form (the decomposed form is not easily input
from the keyboard), but when the commands read from the filesystem
to see what it is going to update the index with already is on the
filesystem, readdir() will give decomposed form, which is different.

- Similarly "git log", "git mv" and all other commands that need to
compare pathnames found on the command line (often but not always
precomposed form; a command line input resulting from globbing may
be in decomposed) with pathnames found in the tree objects (should
be precomposed form to be compatible with other systems and for
  consistency in general).

- The same for names stored in the index, which should be
precomposed, that may need to be compared with the names read from
  readdir().

NFS mounted from Linux is fully transparent and does not suffer from
the above.

As Mac OS X treats precomposed and decomposed file names as equal,
we can

 - wrap readdir() on Mac OS X to return the precomposed form, and

 - normalize decomposed form given from the command line also to the
   precomposed form,

to ensure that all pathnames used in Git are always in the
precomposed form. This behaviour can be requested by setting
"core.precomposedunicode" configuration variable to true.

The code in compat/precomposed_utf8.c implements basically 4 new
functions: precomposed_utf8_opendir(), precomposed_utf8_readdir(),
precomposed_utf8_closedir() and precompose_argv(). The first three
are to wrap opendir(3), readdir(3), and closedir(3) functions.

The argv[] conversion allows to use the TAB filename completion done
by the shell on command line. It tolerates other tools which use
readdir() to feed decomposed file names into git.

When creating a new git repository with "git init" or "git clone",
"core.precomposedunicode" will be set "false".

The user needs to activate this feature manually. She typically
sets core.precomposedunicode to "true" on HFS and VFAT, or file
systems mounted via SAMBA.

We introduce a new build variable, NO_THREAD_SAFE_PREAD, which allows
use to disable the threaded index-pack code on cygwin, in addition to
the above NO_PREAD case.

b8ba629264 Makefile: fold MISC_H into LIB_H
We keep a list of most of the header files in LIB_H, but
some are split out into MISC_H. The original point
of LIB_H was that it would force recompilation of C files
when any of the library headers changed. It was
over-encompassing, since not all C files included all of the
library headers; this made it simple to maintain, but meant
that we sometimes recompiled when it was not necessary.

Over time, some new headers were omitted from LIB_H, and
rules were added to the Makefile for a few specific targets
to explicitly depend on them. This avoided some unnecessary
recompilation at the cost of having to maintain the
dependency list of those targets manually (e.g., d349a03).

Later, we needed a complete list of headers from which we
should extract strings to localized. Thus 1b8b2e4 introduced
MISC_H to mention all header files not included in LIB_H,
and the concatenation of the two lists is fed to xgettext.
Headers mentioned as dependencies must also be manually
added to MISC_H to receive the benefits of localization.

Having to update multiple locations manually is a pain and
has led to errors. For example, see "git log -Swt-status.h
Makefile" for some back-and-forth between the two locations.
Or the fact that column.h was never added to MISC_H, and
therefore was not localized (which is fixed by this patch).
Moreover, the benefits of keeping these few headers out of
LIB_H is not that great, for two reasons:

  1. The better way to do this is by auto-computing the
dependencies, which is more accurate and less work to
maintain. If your compiler supports it, we turn on
computed header dependencies by default these days. So
these manual dependencies are used only for people who
do not have gcc at all (which increases the chance of
them becoming stale, as many developers will never even
     use them).

  2. Even if you do not have gcc, the manual header
dependencies do not help all that much. They obviously
cannot help with an initial compilation (since their
purpose is to avoid unnecessary recompilation when a
header changes), which means they are only useful when
building a new version of git in the working tree that
held an existing build (e.g., after checkout or during a
bisection). But since a change of a header in LIB_H
will force recompilation, and given that the vast
majority of headers are in LIB_H, most version changes
will result in a full rebuild anyway.

Let's just fold MISC_H into LIB_H and get rid of these
manual rules. The worst case is some extra compilation, but
even that is unlikely to matter due to the reasons above.

The one exception is that we should keep common-cmds.h
separate. Because it is generated, the computed dependencies
do not handle it properly, and we must keep separate
individual dependencies on it. Let's therefore rename MISC_H
to GENERATED_H to make it more clear what should go in it.

bf17126211 docs: drop asciidoc7compatible flag
When we made the switch to supporting asciidoc 8 in 4c7100a
(Documentation: adjust to AsciiDoc 8, 2007-06-14), we were
able to leave most of the documentation intact by defining
asciidoc7compatible.

Since commit 6cf378f (docs: stop using asciidoc no-inline-literal,
2012-04-26), we don't support versions of asciidoc older
than 8.4.1, which is when inline literals were introduced.
Therefore there is not much point in keeping our
documentation compatible with asciidoc 7.

So we are now free to drop the asciidoc7compatible flag and
update the documentation itself to assume asciidoc8.
Fortunately, doing the latter is very easy; we weren't using
any of the constructs impacted by asciidoc7compatible, so
there are no changes to make.

The reason is somewhat subtle. The asciidoc7compatible
affects only super/sub-scripts ("^" and "~") and index
terms. We don't use the latter at all. Nor we do we use the
former, but we did have to protect them from accidental
expansion in constructs like "rev^1". However, all of our
uses of "~" and "^" are either in code blocks (which are
rendered literally), or inside backticks. Prior to 6cf378f,
backticks were not inline literals, and needed proper
quoting. But post-6cf378f, we don't have to worry whether we
are using the old or new rules, as those characters are not
interpreted at all in either case.

I verified that the result of "make install-html
install-man" is identical before and after this patch on
asciidoc 8.6.7.

6942efcfa9 xdiff: load full words in the inner loop of xdl_hash_record
Redo the hashing loop in xdl_hash_record in a way that loads an entire
'long' at a time, using masking tricks to see when and where we found
the terminating '\n'.

I stole inspiration and code from the posts by Linus Torvalds around

  https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/3/2/452
  https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/3/5/6

His method reads the buffers in sizeof(long) increments, and may thus
overrun it by at most sizeof(long)-1 bytes before it sees the final
newline (or hits the buffer length check). I considered padding out
all buffers by a suitable amount to "catch" the overrun, but

* this does not work for mmap()'d buffers: if you map 4096+8 bytes
from a 4096 byte file, accessing the last 8 bytes results in a
  SIGBUS on my machine; and

* it would also be extremely ugly because it intrudes deep into the
  unpacking machinery.

So I adapted it to not read beyond the buffer at all. Instead, it
reads the final partial word byte-by-byte and strings it together.
Then it can use the same logic as before to finish the hashing.

So far we enable this only on x86_64, where it provides nice speedup
for diff-related work:

  Test origin/next tr/xdiff-fast-hash

b3e34dddc0 Use SHELL_PATH from build system in run_command.c:prepare_shell_cmd
During the testing of the 1.7.10 rc series on Solaris for OpenCSW, it
was discovered that t7006-pager was failing due to finding a bad "sh"
in PATH after a call to execvp("sh", ...). This call was setup by
run_command.c:prepare_shell_cmd.

The PATH in use at the time saw /opt/csw/bin given precedence to
traditional Solaris paths such as /usr/bin and /usr/xpg4/bin. A
package named schilyutils (Joerg Schilling's utilities) was installed
on the build system and it delivered a modified version of the
traditional Solaris /usr/bin/sh as /opt/csw/bin/sh. This version of
sh suffers from many of the same problems as /usr/bin/sh.

The command-specific pager test failed due to the broken "sh" handling
^ as a pipe character. It tried to fork two processes when it
encountered "sed s/^/foo:/" as the pager command. This problem was
entirely dependent on the PATH of the user at runtime.

Possible fixes for this issue are:

1. Use the standard system() or popen() which both launch a POSIX
shell on Solaris as long as _POSIX_SOURCE is defined.

2. The git wrapper could prepend SANE_TOOL_PATH to PATH thus forcing
all unqualified commands run to use the known good tools on the
   system.

3. The run_command.c:prepare_shell_command() could use the same
SHELL_PATH that is in the #! line of all all scripts and not rely
on PATH to find the sh to run.

Option 1 would preclude opening a bidirectional pipe to a filter
script and would also break git for Windows as cmd.exe is spawned from
system() (cf. v1.7.5-rc0~144^2, "alias: use run_command api to execute
aliases, 2011-01-07).

Option 2 is not friendly to users as it would negate their ability to
use tools of their choice in many cases. Alternately, injecting
SANE_TOOL_PATH such that it takes precedence over /bin and /usr/bin
(and anything with lower precedence than those paths) as
git-sh-setup.sh does would not solve the problem either as the user
environment could still allow a bad sh to be found. (Many OpenCSW
users will have /opt/csw/bin leading their PATH and some subset would
have schilyutils installed.)

Option 3 allows us to use a known good shell while still honouring the
users' PATH for the utilities being run. Thus, it solves the problem
while not negatively impacting either users or git's ability to run
external commands in convenient ways. Essentially, the shell is a
special case of tool that should not rely on SANE_TOOL_PATH and must
be called explicitly.

With this patch applied, any code path leading to
run_command.c:prepare_shell_cmd can count on using the same sane shell
that all shell scripts in the git suite use. Both the build system
and run_command.c will default this shell to /bin/sh unless
overridden.

bcc0a3ea38 Teach revision walking machinery to walk multiple times sequencially
Previously it was not possible to iterate revisions twice using the
revision walking api. We add a reset_revision_walk() which clears the
used flags. This allows us to do multiple sequencial revision walks.

We add the appropriate calls to the existing submodule machinery doing
revision walks. This is done to avoid surprises if future code wants to
call these functions more than once during the processes lifetime.

342e9ef2d9 Introduce a performance testing framework
This introduces a performance testing framework under t/perf/. It
tries to be as close to the test-lib.sh infrastructure as possible,
and thus should be easy to get used to for git developers.

The following points were considered for the implementation:

1. You usually want to compare arbitrary revisions/build trees against
each other. They may not have the performance test under
consideration, or even the perf-lib.sh infrastructure.

To cope with this, the 'run' script lets you specify arbitrary
build dirs and revisions. It even automatically builds the revisions
if it doesn't have them at hand yet.

2. Usually you would not want to run all tests. It would take too
   long anyway.  The 'run' script lets you specify which tests to run;
or you can also do it manually. There is a Makefile for
discoverability and 'make clean', but it is not meant for
   real-world use.

3. Creating test repos from scratch in every test is extremely
time-consuming, and shipping or downloading such large/weird repos
   is out of the question.

We leave this decision to the user. Two different sizes of test
repos can be configured, and the scripts just copy one or more of
those (using hardlinks for the object store). By default it tries
to use the build tree's git.git repository.

This is fairly fast and versatile. Using a copy instead of a clone
preserves many properties that the user may want to test for, such
as lots of loose objects, unpacked refs, etc.

6d62c983f7 Makefile: Change the default compiler from "gcc" to "cc"
Ever since the very first commit to git.git we've been setting CC to
"gcc". Presumably this is behavior that Linus copied from the Linux
Makefile.

However unlike Linux Git is written in ANSI C and supports a multitude
of compilers, including Clang, Sun Studio, xlc etc. On my Linux box
"cc" is a symlink to clang, and on a Solaris box I have access to "cc"
is Sun Studio's CC.

Both of these are perfectly capable of compiling Git, and it's
annoying to have to specify CC=cc on the command-line when compiling
Git when that's the default behavior of most other portable programs.

So change the default to "cc". Users who want to compile with GCC can
still add "CC=gcc" to the make(1) command-line, but those users who
don't have GCC as their "cc" will see expected behavior, and as a
bonus we'll be more likely to smoke out new compilation warnings from
our distributors since they'll me using a more varied set of compilers
by default.

f2d713fc3e Fix build problems related to profile-directed optimization
There was a number of problems I ran into when trying the
profile-directed optimizations added by Andi Kleen in git commit
7ddc2710b9. (This was using gcc 4.4 found on many enterprise
distros.)

1) The -fprofile-generate and -fprofile-use commands are incompatible
with ccache; the code ends up looking in the wrong place for the gcda
files based on the ccache object names.

2) If the makefile notices that CFLAGS are different, it will rebuild
all of the binaries. Hence the recipe originally specified by the
INSTALL file ("make profile-all" followed by "make install") doesn't
work. It will appear to work, but the binaries will end up getting
built with no optimization.

This patch fixes this by using an explicit set of options passed via
the PROFILE variable then using this to directly manipulate CFLAGS and
EXTLIBS.

The developer can run "make PROFILE=BUILD all ; sudo make
PROFILE=BUILD install" automatically run a two-pass build with the
test suite run in between as the sample workload for the purpose of
recording profiling information to do the profile-directed
optimization.

Alternatively, the profiling version of binaries can be built using:

	make PROFILE=GEN PROFILE_DIR=/var/cache/profile all
	make PROFILE=GEN install

and then after git has been used for a while, the optimized version of
the binary can be built as follows:

	make PROFILE=USE PROFILE_DIR=/var/cache/profile all
	make PROFILE=USE install

This simplifies svn-fe a great deal and fulfills a longstanding wish:

The cost is that commandline usage of the svn-fe tool becomes a little
more complicated since it no longer keeps state itself but instead reads
blobs back from fast-import in order to copy them between revisions and
apply deltas to them.

Also removes a couple of custom data structures and replaces them with

21aeafceda add generic terminal prompt function
When we need to prompt the user for input interactively, we
want to access their terminal directly. We can't rely on
stdio because it may be connected to pipes or files, rather
than the terminal. Instead, we use "getpass()", because it
abstracts the idea of prompting and reading from the
terminal. However, it has some problems:

  1. It never echoes the typed characters, which makes it OK
for passwords but annoying for other input (like usernames).

  2. Some implementations of getpass() have an extremely
small input buffer (e.g., Solaris 8 is reported to
     support only 8 characters).

  3. Some implementations of getpass() will fall back to
reading from stdin (e.g., glibc). We explicitly don't
want this, because our stdin may be connected to a pipe
speaking a particular protocol, and reading will
disrupt the protocol flow (e.g., the remote-curl
     helper).

  4. Some implementations of getpass() turn off signals, so
that hitting "^C" on the terminal does not break out of
the password prompt. This can be a mild annoyance.

Instead, let's provide an abstract "git_terminal_prompt"
function that addresses these concerns. This patch includes
an implementation based on /dev/tty, enabled by setting
HAVE_DEV_TTY. The fallback is to use getpass() as before.

do with the git protocol itself. Let's make a new source
file all about prompting the user, which will make it

e2770979fe credentials: add "cache" helper
If you access repositories over smart-http using http
authentication, then it can be annoying to have git ask you
for your password repeatedly. We cache credentials in
memory, of course, but git is composed of many small
programs. Having to input your password for each one can be
frustrating.

This patch introduces a credential helper that will cache
passwords in memory for a short period of time.

abca927dbe introduce credentials API
There are a few places in git that need to get a username
and password credential from the user; the most notable one
is HTTP authentication for smart-http pushing.

Right now the only choices for providing credentials are to
put them plaintext into your ~/.netrc, or to have git prompt
you (either on the terminal or via an askpass program). The
former is not very secure, and the latter is not very
convenient.

Unfortunately, there is no "always best" solution for
password management. The details will depend on the tradeoff
you want between security and convenience, as well as how
git can integrate with other security systems (e.g., many
operating systems provide a keychain or password wallet for
single sign-on).

This patch provides an abstract notion of credentials as a
data item, and provides three basic operations:

  - fill (i.e., acquire from external storage or from the
    user)

  - approve (mark a credential as "working" for further
    storage)

  - reject (mark a credential as "not working", so it can
    be removed from storage)

These operations can be backed by external helper processes
that interact with system- or user-specific secure storage.

5e9637c629 i18n: add infrastructure for translating Git with gettext
Change the skeleton implementation of i18n in Git to one that can show
localized strings to users for our C, Shell and Perl programs using
either GNU libintl or the Solaris gettext implementation.

This new internationalization support is enabled by default. If
gettext isn't available, or if Git is compiled with
NO_GETTEXT=YesPlease, Git falls back on its current behavior of
showing interface messages in English. When using the autoconf script
we'll auto-detect if the gettext libraries are installed and act
appropriately.

This change is somewhat large because as well as adding a C, Shell and
Perl i18n interface we're adding a lot of tests for them, and for
those tests to work we need a skeleton PO file to actually test
translations. A minimal Icelandic translation is included for this
purpose. Icelandic includes multi-byte characters which makes it easy
to test various edge cases, and it's a language I happen to
understand.

The rest of the commit message goes into detail about various
sub-parts of this commit.

= Installation

Gettext .mo files will be installed and looked for in the standard
$(prefix)/share/locale path. GIT_TEXTDOMAINDIR can also be set to
override that, but that's only intended to be used to test Git itself.

= Perl

Perl code that's to be localized should use the new Git::I18n
module. It imports a __ function into the caller's package by default.

Instead of using the high level Locale::TextDomain interface I've
opted to use the low-level (equivalent to the C interface)
Locale::Messages module, which Locale::TextDomain itself uses.

Locale::TextDomain does a lot of redundant work we don't need, and
some of it would potentially introduce bugs. It tries to set the
$TEXTDOMAIN based on package of the caller, and has its own
hardcoded paths where it'll search for messages.

I found it easier just to completely avoid it rather than try to
circumvent its behavior. In any case, this is an issue wholly
internal Git::I18N. Its guts can be changed later if that's deemed
necessary.

See <AANLkTilYD_NyIZMyj9dHtVk-ylVBfvyxpCC7982LWnVd@mail.gmail.com> for
a further elaboration on this topic.

= Shell

Shell code that's to be localized should use the git-sh-i18n
library. It's basically just a wrapper for the system's gettext.sh.

If gettext.sh isn't available we'll fall back on gettext(1) if it's
available. The latter is available without the former on Solaris,
which has its own non-GNU gettext implementation. We also need to
emulate eval_gettext() there.

If neither are present we'll use a dumb printf(1) fall-through
wrapper.

= About libcharset.h and langinfo.h

We use libcharset to query the character set of the current locale if
it's available. I.e. we'll use it instead of nl_langinfo if
HAVE_LIBCHARSET_H is set.

The GNU gettext manual recommends using langinfo.h's
nl_langinfo(CODESET) to acquire the current character set, but on
systems that have libcharset.h's locale_charset() using the latter is
either saner, or the only option on those systems.

GNU and Solaris have a nl_langinfo(CODESET), FreeBSD can use either,
but MinGW and some others need to use libcharset.h's locale_charset()
instead.

024c843d47 Makefile: add option to disable automatic dependency generation
Now that the COMPUTE_HEADER_DEPENDENCIES feature is turned on
automatically for compilers that support it (see v1.7.8-rc0~142^2~1,
2011-08-18), there is no easy way to force it off. For example,
setting COMPUTE_HEADER_DEPENDENCIES to the empty string in config.mak
just tells the makefile to treat it as undefined and run a test
command to see if the -MMD option is supported.

So allow setting COMPUTE_HEADER_DEPENDENCIES=no to explicitly force
the feature off. The new semantics:

 - "yes" means to explicitly enable the feature
 - "no" means to disable it
 - "auto" means to autodetect

The default is still "auto". Any value other than these three will
cause the build to error out with a descriptive message so typos and
stale settings in config.mak don't result in mysterious behavior.

	Makefile:1278: *** please set COMPUTE_HEADER_DEPENDENCIES to
yes, no, or auto (not "1"). Stop.

So now when someone using a compiler without -MMD support reports
trouble building git, you can reproduce it by running "make
COMPUTE_HEADER_DEPENDENCIES=no".

2f47eae2a1 Split GPG interface into its own helper library
This mostly moves existing code from builtin/tag.c (for signing)
and builtin/verify-tag.c (for verifying) to a new gpg-interface.c
file to provide a more generic library interface.

 - sign_buffer() takes a payload strbuf, a signature strbuf, and a signing
key, runs "gpg" to produce a detached signature for the payload, and
appends it to the signature strbuf. The contents of a signed tag that
concatenates the payload and the detached signature can be produced by
giving the same strbuf as payload and signature strbuf.

 - verify_signed_buffer() takes a payload and a detached signature as
<ptr, len> pairs, and runs "gpg --verify" to see if the payload matches
the signature. It can optionally capture the output from GPG to allow
the callers to pretty-print it in a way more suitable for their
   contexts.

"verify-tag" (aka "tag -v") used to save the whole tag contents as if it
is a detached signature, and fed gpg the payload part of the tag. It
relied on gpg to fail when the given tag is not signed but just is
annotated. The updated run_gpg_verify() function detects the lack of
detached signature in the input, and errors out without bothering "gpg".

53b742522c Makefile: fix permissions of mergetools/ checked out with permissive umask
Ever since mergetool--lib was split into multiple files in
v1.7.7-rc0~3^2~1 (2011-08-18), the Makefile takes care to reset umask
and use tar --no-owner when installing merge tool definitions to
$(gitexecdir)/mergetools/. Unfortunately it does not take into
account the possibility that the permission bits of the files being
copied might already be wrong.

Rather than fixing the "tar" incantation and making it even more
complicated, let's just use the "install" utility. This only means
losing the ability to install executables and subdirectories of
mergetools/, which wasn't used.

Noticed by installing from a copy of git checked out with umask 002.

0b20dd8f3d Makefile: do not set setgid bit on directories on GNU/kFreeBSD
The g+s bit on directories to make group ownership inherited is a
SysVism --- BSD and most of its descendants do not need it since they
do the sane thing by default without g+s. In fact, on some
filesystems (but not all --- tmpfs works this way but UFS does not),
the kernel of FreeBSD does not even allow non-root users to set setgid
bit on directories and produces errors when one tries:

	$ git init --shared dir
fatal: Could not make /tmp/dir/.git/refs writable by group

Since the setgid bit would only mean "do what you were going to do
already", it's better to avoid setting it. Accordingly, ever since
v1.5.5-rc0~59^2 (Do not use GUID on dir in git init --share=all on
FreeBSD, 2008-03-05), git on true FreeBSD has done exactly that. Set
DIR_HAS_BSD_GROUP_SEMANTICS in the makefile for GNU/kFreeBSD, too, so
machines that use glibc with the kernel of FreeBSD get the same fix.

This fixes t0001-init.sh and t1301-shared-repo.sh on GNU/kFreeBSD
when running tests with --root pointing to a directory that uses
tmpfs.

c1189caeaf refactor argv_array into generic code
The submodule code recently grew generic code to build a
dynamic argv array. Many other parts of the code can reuse
this, too, so let's make it generically available.

There are two enhancements not found in the original code:

  1. We now handle the NULL-termination invariant properly,
even when no strings have been pushed (before, you
could have an empty, NULL argv). This was not a problem
for the submodule code, which always pushed at least
one argument, but was not sufficiently safe for
     generic code.

  2. There is a formatted variant of the "push" function.
This is a convenience function which was not needed by
the submodule code, but will make it easier to port
other users to the new code.

1816bf26ec Makefile: Improve compiler header dependency check
The Makefile enables CHECK_HEADER_DEPENDENCIES when the
compiler supports generating header dependencies.
Make the check use the same flags as the invocation
to avoid a false positive when user-configured compiler
flags contain incompatible options.

For example, without this patch, trying to build universal
binaries on a Mac using CFLAGS='-arch i386 -arch x86_64'
produces:

	gcc-4.2: -E, -S, -save-temps and -M options are
not allowed with multiple -arch flags

While at it, remove "sh -c" in the command passed to $(shell);
at this point in the Makefile, SHELL has already been set to
a sensible shell and it is better not to override that.

0687628466 Reduce parse-options.o dependencies
Currently parse-options.o pulls quite a big bunch of dependencies.
his complicates it's usage in contrib/ because it pulls external
dependencies and it also increases executables size.

Split off less generic and more internal to git part of
parse-options.c to parse-options-cb.c.

Move prefix_filename function from setup.c to abspath.c. abspath.o
and wrapper.o pull each other, so it's unlikely to increase the
dependencies. It was a dependency of parse-options.o that pulled
many others.

Now parse-options.o pulls just abspath.o, ctype.o, strbuf.o, usage.o,
wrapper.o, libc directly and strlcpy.o indirectly.

26ae337be1 revert: Introduce --reset to remove sequencer state
To explicitly remove the sequencer state for a fresh cherry-pick or
revert invocation, introduce a new subcommand called "--reset" to
remove the sequencer state.

Take the opportunity to publicly expose the sequencer paths, and a
generic function called "remove_sequencer_state" that various git
programs can use to remove the sequencer state in a uniform manner;
"git reset" uses it later in this series. Introducing this public API
is also in line with our long-term goal of eventually factoring out
functions from revert.c into a generic commit sequencer.

Port JGit's HistogramDiff algorithm over to C. Rough numbers (TODO) show
that it is faster than its --patience cousin, as well as the default

The implementation has been reworked to use structs and pointers,

We also use xdiff's default hash table implementation (xdl_hash_bits()

7ddc2710b9 Add profile feedback build to git
Add a gcc profile feedback build option "profile-all" to the main
Makefile. It simply runs the test suite to generate feedback data and the
recompiles the main executables with that. The basic structure is similar
to the existing gcov code.

gcc is often able to generate better code with profile feedback data. The
training load also doesn't need to be too similar to the actual load, it
still gives benefits.

The test suite run is unfortunately quite long. It would be good to find a
suitable subset that runs faster and still gives reasonable feedback.

For now the test suite runs single threaded (I had some trouble running
the test suite with -jX)

I tested it with git gc and git blame kernel/sched.c on a Linux kernel
tree. For gc I get about 2.7% improvement in wall clock time by using the
feedback build, for blame about 2.4%. That's not gigantic, but not shabby
either for a very small patch.

If anyone has any favourite CPU intensive git benchmarks feel free to try
them too.

I hope distributors will switch to use a feedback build in their packages.

Currently, on Interix, libsuacomp is required for building (see [1]).

Since suacomp provides poll() and inttypes.h for all interix versions,

Interix versions 3 and 5 miss struct sockaddr_storage, so make git

Same for FNMATCH_CASEFOLD, which does not exist for Interix 3 and 5.

46bf043807 streaming: a new API to read from the object store
Given an object name, use open_istream() to get a git_istream handle
that you can read_istream() from as if you are using read(2) to read

Currently, we do not do anything fancy--it just calls read_sha1_file()
and keeps the contents in memory as a whole, and carve it out as you
request with read_istream().

adc3b2b276 Makefile: add xgettext target for *.sh files
Change the "pot" target to also extract strings from our $(SCRIPT_SH)
files with xgettext(1).

Note that due to Jonathan Nieder's trick of doing "mv $@+ $@" at the
end of the target the "pot" target will now warn:

    $ make pot
        XGETTEXT po/git.pot
po/git.pot+: warning: Charset "CHARSET" is not a portable encoding name.
Message conversion to user's charset might not work.

This warnings is emitted because xgettext is writing into a non-*.pot
file, it's harmless however. The content that's written out is
equivalent to what it would be if we were writing directly into an
existing POT file with --join-existing.

As part of this change I've eliminated the && chain between xgettext
calls, this is incompatible with $(QUIET_XGETTEXT), if the && is left
in it'll emit:

    /bin/sh: @echo: not found

Since it's redundant (the Makefile will stop if there's an error) I've
removed it altogether.

ba67aaf2d0 git-sh-i18n--envsubst: our own envsubst(1) for eval_gettext()
Add a git-sh-i18n--envsubst program which is a stripped-down version
of the GNU envsubst(1) program that comes with GNU gettext for use in
the eval_gettext() fallback.

We need a C helper program because implementing eval_gettext() purely
in shell turned out to be unworkable. Digging through the Git mailing
list archives will reveal two shell implementations of eval_gettext
that are almost good enough, but fail on an edge case which is tested
for in the tests which are part of this patch.

These are the modifications I made to envsubst.c as I turned it into
sh-i18n--envsubst.c:

 * Added our git-compat-util.h header for xrealloc() and friends.

 * Removed inclusion of gettext-specific headers.

 * Removed most of main() and replaced it with my own. The modified
version only does option parsing for --variables. That's all it
   needs.

 * Modified error() invocations to use our error() instead of
   error(3).

 * Replaced the gettext XNMALLOC(n, size) macro with just
xmalloc(n). Since XNMALLOC() only allocated char's.

 * Removed the string_list_destroy function. It's redundant (also in
   the upstream code).

 * Replaced the use of stdbool.h (a C99 header) by doing the following
   replacements on the code:

    * s/bool/unsigned short int/g
    * s/true/1/g
    * s/false/0/g

63e7e9d8b6 git-grep: Learn PCRE
This patch teaches git-grep the --perl-regexp/-P options (naming
borrowed from GNU grep) in order to allow specifying PCRE regexes on the
command line.

PCRE has a number of features which make them more handy to use than
POSIX regexes, like consistent escaping rules, extended character
classes, ungreedy matching etc.

git isn't build with PCRE support automatically. USE_LIBPCRE environment
variable must be enabled (like `make USE_LIBPCRE=YesPlease`).

9fb1e69842 Honor $(prefix) set in config.mak* when defining ETC_GIT*
Notice that the prefix specified for the build influenced the definitions
of ETC_GITCONFIG and ETC_GITATTRIBUTES only when it was exactly '/usr'.
Kacper Kornet noticed that this was furthermore only the case when the
build was triggered using 'make prefix=/usr', i.e., the prefix was given
on the command line; it did not work when the prefix was specified in
config.mak because this file is included much later in the Makefile.

To fix this, move the conditional after the inclusion of config.mak.

Additionally, it is desirable to specify the etc directory for a build
(for example, a build with prefix /usr/local may still want to have the
system configuration in /etc/gitconfig). For this purpose, promote the
variable 'sysconfdir' from a helper variable to a configuration
variable. The prefix check that was moved must now be wrapped so that it
does not override sysconfdir setting given in config.mak.

410ee20bde Revert "Honor $(prefix) set in config.mak* when defining ETC_GIT* and sysconfdir"
This reverts commit 2910bf56a4, as it
does not really solve the issue of making $(sysconfigdir) any more
useful than it currently is.

f09f1d35b5 Remove gitweb/gitweb.cgi and other legacy targets from main Makefile
Now that there is gitweb/Makefile, let's leave only "gitweb" and
"install-gitweb" targets in main Makefile. Those targets just
delegate to gitweb's Makefile.
