5bb67fb7ab Merge branch 'jc/unresolve-removal'
"checkout --merge -- path" and "update-index --unresolve path" did
not resurrect conflicted state that was resolved to remove path,
but now they do.

* jc/unresolve-removal:
checkout: allow "checkout -m path" to unmerge removed paths
checkout/restore: add basic tests for --merge
checkout/restore: refuse unmerging paths unless checking out of the index
update-index: remove stale fallback code for "--unresolve"
update-index: use unmerge_index_entry() to support removal
resolve-undo: allow resurrecting conflicted state that resolved to deletion
update-index: do not read HEAD and MERGE_HEAD unconditionally

5bdedac3c7 checkout: allow "checkout -m path" to unmerge removed paths
"git checkout -m -- path" uses the unmerge_marked_index() API, whose
implementation is incapable of unresolving a path that was resolved
as removed. Extend the unmerge_index() API function so that we can
mark the ce_flags member of the cache entries we add to the index as
unmerged, and replace use of unmerge_marked_index() with it.

Now, together with its unmerge_index_entry_at() helper function,
unmerge_marked_index() function is no longer called by anybody, and
can safely be removed.

This makes two known test failures in t2070 and t7201 to succeed.

fe83269e16 resolve-undo: allow resurrecting conflicted state that resolved to deletion
The resolve-undo index extension records up to three (mode, object
name) tuples for non-zero stages for each path that was resolved,
to be used to recreate the original conflicted state later when the
user requests.

The unmerge_index_entry_at() function uses the resolve-undo data to
do so, but it assumes that the path for which the conflicted state
needs to be recreated can be specified by the position in the
active_cache[] array. This obviously cannot salvage the state of
conflicted paths that were resolved by removing them. For example,
a delete-modify conflict, in which the change whose "modify" side
made is a trivial typofix, may legitimately be resolved to remove
the path, and resolve-undo extension does record the two (mode,
object name) tuples for the common ancestor version and their
version, lacking our version. But after recording such a removal of
the path, you should be able to use resolve-undo data to recreate
the conflicted state.

Introduce a new unmerge_index_entry() helper function that takes the
path (which does not necessarily have to exist in the active_cache[]
array) and resolve-undo data, and use it to reimplement unmerge_index()
public function that is used by "git rerere".

The limited interface is still kept for now, as it is used by "git
checkout -m" and "git update-index --unmerge", but these two codepaths
will be updated to lift the assumption to allow conflicts that resolved
to deletion can be recreated.

bc5c5ec044 cache.h: remove this no-longer-used header
Since this header showed up in some places besides just #include
statements, update/clean-up/remove those other places as well.

Note that compat/fsmonitor/fsm-path-utils-darwin.c previously got
away with violating the rule that all files must start with an include
of git-compat-util.h (or a short-list of alternate headers that happen
to include it first). This change exposed the violation and caused it
to stop building correctly; fix it by having it include
git-compat-util.h first, as per policy.

08c46a499a read-cache*.h: move declarations for read-cache.c functions from cache.h
For the functions defined in read-cache.c, move their declarations from
cache.h to a new header, read-cache-ll.h. Also move some related inline
functions from cache.h to read-cache.h. The purpose of the
read-cache-ll.h/read-cache.h split is that about 70% of the sites don't
need the inline functions and the extra headers they include.

d1cbe1e6d8 hash-ll.h: split out of hash.h to remove dependency on repository.h
hash.h depends upon and includes repository.h, due to the definition and
use of the_hash_algo (defined as the_repository->hash_algo). However,
most headers trying to include hash.h are only interested in the layout
of the structs like object_id. Move the parts of hash.h that do not
depend upon repository.h into a new file hash-ll.h (the "low level"
parts of hash.h), and adjust other files to use this new header where
the convenience inline functions aren't needed.

This allows hash.h and object.h to be fairly small, minimal headers. It
also exposes a lot of hidden dependencies on both path.h (which was
brought in by repository.h) and repository.h (which was previously
implicitly brought in by object.h), so also adjust other files to be
more explicit about what they depend upon.

a849735bfb block alloc: add lifecycle APIs for cache_entry structs
It has been observed that the time spent loading an index with a large
number of entries is partly dominated by malloc() calls. This change
is in preparation for using memory pools to reduce the number of
malloc() calls made to allocate cahce entries when loading an index.

Add an API to allocate and discard cache entries, abstracting the
details of managing the memory backing the cache entries. This commit
does actually change how memory is managed - this will be done in a
later commit in the series.

This change makes the distinction between cache entries that are
associated with an index and cache entries that are not associated with
an index. A main use of cache entries is with an index, and we can
optimize the memory management around this. We still have other cases
where a cache entry is not persisted with an index, and so we need to
handle the "transient" use case as well.

To keep the congnitive overhead of managing the cache entries, there
will only be a single discard function. This means there must be enough
information kept with the cache entry so that we know how to discard
them.

A summary of the main functions in the API is:

make_cache_entry: create cache entry for use in an index. Uses specified
                  parameters to populate cache_entry fields.

make_empty_cache_entry: Create an empty cache entry for use in an index.
Returns cache entry with empty fields.

make_transient_cache_entry: create cache entry that is not used in an
index. Uses specified parameters to populate
                            cache_entry fields.

make_empty_transient_cache_entry: create cache entry that is not used in
an index. Returns cache entry with
                                  empty fields.

discard_cache_entry: A single function that knows how to discard a cache
entry regardless of how it was allocated.

5699d17ee0 read-cache.c: fix memory leaks caused by removed cache entries
When cache_entry structs are removed from index_state.cache, they are not
properly freed. Freeing those entries wasn't possible before because we
couldn't remove them from index_state.name_hash.

Now that we _do_ remove the entries from name_hash, we can also free them.
Add 'free(cache_entry)' to all call sites of name-hash.c::remove_name_hash
in read-cache.c (we could free() directly in remove_name_hash(), but
name-hash.c isn't concerned with cache_entry allocation at all).

Accessing a cache_entry after removing it from the index is now no longer
allowed, as the memory has been freed. The following functions need minor
fixes (typically by copying ce->name before use):
 - builtin/rm.c::cmd_rm
 - builtin/update-index.c::do_reupdate
 - read-cache.c::read_index_unmerged
 - resolve-undo.c::unmerge_index_entry_at

9c5e6c802c Convert "struct cache_entry *" to "const ..." wherever possible
I attempted to make index_state->cache[] a "const struct cache_entry **"
to find out how existing entries in index are modified and where. The
question I have is what do we do if we really need to keep track of on-disk
changes in the index. The result is

 - diff-lib.c: setting CE_UPTODATE

 - name-hash.c: setting CE_HASHED

 - preload-index.c, read-cache.c, unpack-trees.c and
   builtin/update-index: obvious

 - entry.c: write_entry() may refresh the checked out entry via
   fill_stat_cache_info(). This causes "non-const struct cache_entry
   *" in builtin/apply.c, builtin/checkout-index.c and
   builtin/checkout.c

 - builtin/ls-files.c: --with-tree changes stagemask and may set
   CE_UPDATE

Of these, write_entry() and its call sites are probably most
interesting because it modifies on-disk info. But this is stat info
and can be retrieved via refresh, at least for porcelain
commands. Other just uses ce_flags for local purposes.

So, keeping track of "dirty" entries is just a matter of setting a
flag in index modification functions exposed by read-cache.c. Except
unpack-trees, the rest of the code base does not do anything funny
behind read-cache's back.

The actual patch is less valueable than the summary above. But if
anyone wants to re-identify the above sites. Applying this patch, then
this:

    diff --git a/cache.h b/cache.h
    index 430d021..1692891 100644

e721c1544f checkout: avoid unnecessary match_pathspec calls
In checkout_paths() we do this

 - for all updated items, call match_pathspec
 - for all items, call match_pathspec (inside unmerge_cache)
 - for all items, call match_pathspec (for showing "path .. is unmerged)
 - for updated items, call match_pathspec and update paths

That's a lot of duplicate match_pathspec(s) and the function is not
exactly cheap to be called so many times, especially on large indexes.
This patch makes it call match_pathspec once per updated index entry,
save the result in ce_flags and reuse the results in the following
loops.

The changes in 0a1283b (checkout $tree $path: do not clobber local
changes in $path not in $tree - 2011-09-30) limit the affected paths
to ones we read from $tree. We do not do anything to other modified
entries in this case, so the "for all items" above could be modified
to "for all updated items". But..

The command's behavior now is modified slightly: unmerged entries that
match $path, but not updated by $tree, are now NOT touched. Although
this should be considered a bug fix, not a regression. A new test is
added for this change.

And while at there, free ps_matched after use.

The following command is tested on webkit, 215k entries. The pattern
is chosen mainly to make match_pathspec sweat:

git checkout -- "*[a-zA-Z]*[a-zA-Z]*[a-zA-Z]*"

The rule for selecting the candidates for conversion is: if the callback

A notable exception are the callers in builtin/remote.c. If converted, the
readability in the file will suffer greately. Besides, the code is not very
performance critical (at the moment, at least): it does output formatting of

cfc5789ada resolve-undo: record resolved conflicts in a new index extension section
When resolving a conflict using "git add" to create a stage #0 entry, or
"git rm" to remove entries at higher stages, remove_index_entry_at()
function is eventually called to remove unmerged (i.e. higher stage)
entries from the index. Introduce a "resolve_undo_info" structure and
keep track of the removed cache entries, and save it in a new index
extension section in the index_state.

Operations like "read-tree -m", "merge", "checkout [-m] <branch>" and
"reset" are signs that recorded information in the index is no longer
necessary. The data is removed from the index extension when operations
start; they may leave conflicted entries in the index, and later user
actions like "git add" will record their conflicted states afresh.
