Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason aca8568e2c submodule tests: test for init and update failure output
Amend some submodule tests to test for the failure output of "git
submodule [update|init]". The lack of such tests hid a regression in
an earlier version of a subsequent commit.

Denton Liu 4cf795b842 t7408: replace incorrect uses of test_must_fail
According to t/README, test_must_fail() should only be used to test for
failure in Git commands.

Replace the invocation of `test_must_fail test_path_is_file` with
`test_path_is_missing` since, in this test case, the path should not
exist at all.

In all the cases where `test_must_fail test_alternate_is_used` appears,
test_alternate_is_used() fails because test_line_count() cannot open the
non-existent $alternates_file. Replace
`test_must_fail test_alternate_is_used` with `test_path_is_missing` to
test for this directly.

Vitaly "_Vi" Shukela bf03b79047 submodule--helper: set alternateLocation for cloned submodules
In 31224cbdc7 (clone: recursive and reference option triggers
submodule alternates, 2016-08-17) a mechanism was added to
have submodules referenced. It did not address _nested_
submodules, however.

This patch makes all not just the root repository, but also
all submodules (recursively) have submodule.alternateLocation
and submodule.alternateErrorStrategy configured, making Git
search for possible alternates for nested submodules as well.

As submodule's alternate target does not end in .git/objects
(rather .git/modules/qqqqqq/objects), this alternate target
path restriction for in add_possible_reference_from_superproject
relates from "*.git/objects" to just */objects".

New tests have been added to t7408-submodule-reference.

Stefan Beller 31224cbdc7 clone: recursive and reference option triggers submodule alternates
When `--recursive` and `--reference` is given, it is reasonable to
expect that the submodules are created with references to the submodules
of the given alternate for the superproject.

An initial attempt to do this was presented to the mailing list, which
used flags that are passed around ("--super-reference") that instructed
the submodule clone to look for a reference in the submodules of the
referenced superproject. This is not well thought out, as any further
`submodule update` should also respect the initial setup.

When a new submodule is added to the superproject and the alternate
of the superproject does not know about that submodule yet, we rather
error out informing the user instead of being unclear if we did or did
  not use a submodules alternate.

To solve this problem introduce new options that store the configuration
for what the user wanted originally.

Stefan Beller 9292536eb4 t7408: merge short tests, factor out testing method
Tests consisting of one line each can be consolidated to have fewer tests
to run as well as fewer lines of code.

When having just a few git commands, do not create a new shell but
use the -C flag in Git to execute in the correct directory.

Stefan Beller 83dec7338a t7408: modernize style
No functional change intended. This commit only changes formatting
to the style we recently use, e.g. starting the body of a test with a
single quote on the same line as the header, and then having the test
indented in the following lines.

Whenever we change directories, we do that in subshells.

Elia Pinto db0ff2c032 t/t7408-submodule-reference.sh: use the $( ... ) construct for command substitution
The Git CodingGuidelines prefer the $(...) construct for command
substitution instead of using the backquotes `...`.

The backquoted form is the traditional method for command
substitution, and is supported by POSIX. However, all but the
simplest uses become complicated quickly. In particular, embedded
command substitutions and/or the use of double quotes require
careful escaping with the backslash character.

The patch was generated by:

for _f in $(find . -name "*.sh")
do
	perl -i -pe 'BEGIN{undef $/;} s/`(.+?)`/\$(\1)/smg' "${_f}"
done

and then carefully proof-read.

Jens Lehmann cb8ad289c6 Consistently use "superproject" instead of "supermodule"
We fairly consistently say "superproject" and never "supermodule" these
days. But there are seven occurrences of "supermodule" left in the current
work tree. Three appear in Release Notes for 1.5.3 and 1.7.7, three in
test names and one in a C-code comment.

Replace all occurrences of "supermodule" outside of the Release Notes
(which shouldn't be changed after the fact) with "superproject" for
consistency.

Fredrik Gustafsson 501770e1bb Move git-dir for submodules
Move git-dir for submodules into $GIT_DIR/modules/[name_of_submodule] of
the superproject. This is a step towards being able to delete submodule
directories without loosing the information from their .git directory
as that is now stored outside the submodules work tree.

This is done relying on the already existent .git-file functionality.
When adding or updating a submodule whose git directory is found under
$GIT_DIR/modules/[name_of_submodule], don't clone it again but simply
point the .git-file to it and remove the now stale index file from it.
The index will be recreated by the following checkout.

This patch will not affect already cloned submodules at all.

Tests that rely on .git being a directory have been fixed.
