Fix a memory leak that's been here ever since 72aeb18772 (clean.c,
ls-files.c: respect encapsulation of exclude_list_groups, 2013-01-16),
we dup'd the argument in option_parse_exclude(), but never freed the
string_list.
This makes almost all of t3001-ls-files-others-exclude.sh pass (it had
a lot of failures before). Let's mark it as passing with
TEST_PASSES_SANITIZE_LEAK=true, and then exclude the tests that still
failed with a !SANITIZE_LEAK prerequisite check until we fix those
leaks. We can still see the failed tests under
GIT_TEST_FAIL_PREREQS=true.

A directory that is untracked does not imply that all files under it
should be categorized as untracked; in particular, if the caller is
interested in ignored files, many files or directories underneath the
untracked directory may be ignored. We previously partially handled
this right with DIR_SHOW_IGNORED_TOO, but missed DIR_SHOW_IGNORED. It
was not obvious, though, because the logic for untracked and excluded
files had been fused together making it harder to reason about. The
previous commit split that logic out, making it easier to notice that
DIR_SHOW_IGNORED was missing. Add it.

In the last commit, we added a testcase showing that the directory
traversal machinery sometimes traverses into directories unnecessarily.
Here we show that there are cases where it does the opposite: it does
not traverse into directories, despite those directories having
important files that need to be flagged.
Add a testcase showing that `git ls-files -o -i --directory` can omit
some of the files it should be listing, and another showing that `git
clean -fX` can fail to clean out some of the expected files.

Using 'test_must_be_empty' is shorter and more idiomatic than
>empty &&
test_cmp empty out
as it saves the creation of an empty file. Furthermore, sometimes the
expected empty file doesn't have such a descriptive name like 'empty',
and its creation is far away from the place where it's finally used
for comparison (e.g. in 't7600-merge.sh', where two expected empty
files are created in the 'setup' test, but are used only about 500
lines later).
These cases were found by instrumenting 'test_cmp' to error out the
test script when it's used to compare empty files, and then converted
manually.
Note that even after this patch there still remain a lot of cases
where we use 'test_cmp' to check empty files:
- Sometimes the expected output is not hard-coded in the test, but
'test_cmp' is used to ensure that two similar git commands produce
the same output, and that output happens to be empty, e.g. the
test 'submodule update --merge - ignores --merge for new
submodules' in 't7406-submodule-update.sh'.
- Repetitive common tasks, including preparing the expected results
and running 'test_cmp', are often extracted into a helper
function, and some of this helper's callsites expect no output.
- For the same reason as above, the whole 'test_expect_success'
block is within a helper function, e.g. in 't3070-wildmatch.sh'.
- Or 'test_cmp' is invoked in a loop, e.g. the test 'cvs update
(-p)' in 't9400-git-cvsserver-server.sh'.

Change various tests that use an idiom of the form:

To instead use:
test_must_be_empty actual
The test_must_be_empty() wrapper was introduced in ca8d148daf ("test:
test_must_be_empty helper", 2013-06-09). Many of these tests have been
added after that time. This was mostly found with, and manually pruned
from:

If there is a pattern "!foo/bar", this patch makes it not exclude
"foo" right away. This gives us a chance to examine "foo" and
re-include "foo/bar".

The ignore mechanism saw a few regressions around untracked file
listing and sparse checkout selection areas in 2.7.0; the change
that is responsible for the regression has been reverted.

This reverts commit 57534ee77d. The
feature added in that commit requires that patterns behave the same way
from anywhere. But some patterns can behave differently depending on
current "working" directory. The conditions to catch and avoid these
patterns are too loose. The untracked listing[1] and sparse-checkout
selection[2] can become incorrect as a result.

Allow a later "!/abc/def" to override an earlier "/abc" that
appears in the same .gitignore file to make it easier to express
"everything in /abc directory is ignored, except for ...".

If there is a pattern "!foo/bar", this patch makes it not exclude "foo"
right away. This gives us a chance to examine "foo" and re-include
"foo/bar".
In order for it to detect that the directory under examination should
not be excluded right away, in other words it is a parent directory of a
negative pattern, the "directory path" of the negative pattern must be
literal. Patterns like "!f?o/bar" can't stop "foo" from being excluded.
Basename matching (i.e. "no slashes in the pattern") or must-be-dir
matching (i.e. "trailing slash in the pattern") does not work well with
this. For example, if we descend in "foo" and are examining "foo/abc",
current code for "foo/" pattern will check if path "foo/abc", not "foo",
is a directory. The same problem with basename matching. These may need
big code reorg to make it work.

These are tests which are missing a link in their &&-chain,
but in a way that probably does not effect the outcome of
the test. Most of these are of the form:
some_cmd >actual
test_cmp expect actual
The main point of the test is to verify the output, and a
failure in some_cmd would probably be noticed by bogus
output. But it is good for the tests to also confirm that
"some_cmd" does not die unexpectedly after producing its
output.

Historically, "git status" needed to prefix each output line with '#' so
that the output could be added as comment to the commit message. This
prefix comment has no real purpose when "git status" is ran from the
command-line, and this may distract users from the real content.
Disable this prefix comment by default, and make it re-activable for
users needing backward compatibility with status.displayCommentPrefix.
Obviously, "git commit" ignores status.displayCommentPrefix and keeps the
comment unconditionnaly when writing to COMMIT_EDITMSG (but not when
writing to stdout for an error message or with --dry-run).

As of 95c6f271 "dir.c: unify is_excluded and is_path_excluded APIs", the
is_excluded API no longer recurses into directories that match an ignore
pattern, and returns the directory's ignored state for all contained paths.
This is OK for normal ignore patterns, i.e. ignoring a directory affects
the entire contents recursively.
Unfortunately, this also "works" for negated ignore patterns ('!dir'), i.e.
the entire contents is "not-ignored" recursively, regardless of ignore
patterns that match the contents directly.
In prep_exclude, skip recursing into a directory only if it is really
ignored (i.e. the ignore pattern is not negated).

The notion of "ignored tracked" directories introduced in 721ac4ed "dir.c:
Make git-status --ignored more consistent" has a few unwanted side effects:
- git-clean -d -X: deletes ignored tracked directories. git-clean should
never delete tracked content.
- git-ls-files --ignored --other --directory: lists ignored tracked
directories instead of "other" directories.
- git-status --ignored: lists ignored tracked directories while contained
files may be listed as modified. Paths listed by git-status should be
disjoint (except in long format where a path may be listed in both the
staged and unstaged section).
Additionally, the current behaviour violates documentation in gitignore(5)
("Specifies intentionally *untracked* files to ignore") and Documentation/
technical/api-directory-listing.txt ("DIR_SHOW_OTHER_DIRECTORIES: Include
a directory that is *not tracked*.").
In dir.c::treat_directory, remove the special handling of ignored tracked
directories, so that the DIR_SHOW_OTHER_DIRECTORIES flag only affects
"other" (i.e. untracked) directories. In dir.c::dir_add_name, check that
added paths are untracked even if DIR_SHOW_IGNORED is set.

--no-empty-directory was not specified.
Treat the DIR_HIDE_EMPTY_DIRECTORIES flag independently from
DIR_SHOW_IGNORED to make all git-ls-files options work as expected.

"git checkout -- <paths>" is usually used to restore all modified
files in <paths>. In sparse checkout mode, this command is overloaded
with another meaning: to add back all files in <paths> that are
excluded by sparse patterns.
As the former makes more sense for day-to-day use. Switch it to the
default and the latter enabled with --ignore-skip-worktree-bits.
While at there, add info/sparse-checkout to gitrepository-layout.txt

When "namelen" becomes zero at this stage, we have matched the fixed
part, but whether it actually matches the pattern still depends on the
pattern in "exclude". As demonstrated in t3001, path "three/a.3"
exists and it matches the "three/a.3" part in pattern "three/a.3[abc]",
but that does not mean a true match.
Don't be too optimistic and let fnmatch() do the job.

Breaks in a test assertion's && chain can potentially hide
failures from earlier commands in the chain.
Commands intended to fail should be marked with !, test_must_fail, or
test_might_fail. The examples in this patch do not require that.

Given pathspecs that share a common prefix, ls-files optimized its call
into recursive directory reader by starting at the common prefix
directory.
If you have a directory "t" with an untracked file "t/junk" in it, but the
top-level .gitignore file told us to ignore "t/", this resulted in:
$ git ls-files -o --exclude-standard
$ git ls-files -o --exclude-standard t/
t/junk
$ git ls-files -o --exclude-standard t/junk
t/junk
$ cd t && git ls-files -o --exclude-standard
junk
We could argue that you are overriding the ignore file by giving a
patchspec that matches or being in that directory, but it is somewhat
unexpected. Worse yet, these behave differently:
$ git ls-files -o --exclude-standard t/ .
$ git ls-files -o --exclude-standard t/
t/junk
This patch changes the optimization so that it notices when the common
prefix directory that it starts reading from is an ignored one.

When you have "t" directory that is marked as ignored in the top-level
.gitignore file (or $GIT_DIR/info/exclude), running
$ git ls-files -o --exclude-standard
from the top-level correctly excludes files in "t" directory, but
any of the following:
$ git ls-files -o --exclude-standard t/
$ cd t && git ls-files -o --exclude-standard
would show untracked files in that directory.

This adds index as a prerequisite for directory listing (with
exclude). At the moment directory listing is used by "git clean",
"git add", "git ls-files" and "git status"/"git commit" and
unpack_trees()-related commands. These commands have been
checked/modified to populate index before doing directory listing.
add_excludes_from_file() does not enable this feature, because it
is used to read .git/info/exclude and some explicit files specified
by "git ls-files".

"\" was treated differently in exclude rules depending on whether a
wildcard match was done. For wildcard rules, "\" was de-escaped in
fnmatch, but this was not done for other rules since they used strcmp
instead. A file named "#foo" would not be excluded by "\#foo", but would
be excluded by "\#foo*".
We now treat all rules with "\" as wildcard rules.
Another solution could be to de-escape all non-wildcard rules as we
read them, but we would have to do the de-escaping exactly as fnmatch
does it to avoid inconsistencies.

As a general principle, we should not use "git diff" to validate the
results of what git command that is being tested has done. We would not
know if we are testing the command in question, or locating a bug in the
cute hack of "git diff --no-index".
Rather use test_cmp for that purpose.

Many scripts compare actual and expected output using
"diff -u". This is nicer than "cmp" because the output shows
how the two differ. However, not all versions of diff
understand -u, leading to unnecessary test failure.
This adds a test_cmp function to the test scripts and
switches all "diff -u" invocations to use it. The function
uses the contents of "$GIT_TEST_CMP" to compare its
arguments; the default is "diff -u".
On systems with a less-capable diff, you can do:
GIT_TEST_CMP=cmp make test

A pattern "foo/" in the exclude list did not match directory
"foo", but a pattern "foo" did. This attempts to extend the
exclude mechanism so that it would while not matching a regular
file or a symbolic link "foo". In order to differentiate a
directory and non directory, this passes down the type of path
being checked to excluded() function.
A downside is that the recursive directory walk may need to run
lstat(2) more often on systems whose "struct dirent" do not give
the type of the entry; earlier it did not have to do so for an
excluded path, but we now need to figure out if a path is a
directory before deciding to exclude it. This is especially bad
because an idea similar to the earlier CE_UPTODATE optimization
to reduce number of lstat(2) calls would by definition not apply
to the codepaths involved, as (1) directories will not be
registered in the index, and (2) excluded paths will not be in
the index anyway.

Now that "git diff" handles stdin and relative paths outside the
working tree correctly, we can convert all instances of "diff -u"
to "git diff".

and the installed /bin/echo does not do "-e" as well.

For everyone cursed by dos/windows line endings (aka CRLF):
The code reading the .gitignore files (excludes and excludes per
directory) leaves \r in the patterns, which causes fnmatch to fail for
no obvious reason. Just remove a "\r" preceding a "\n"
unconditionally.

All test scripts should end with test_done, which reports the test
results. In the future, it could be used for other purposes, e.g. to
distinguish graceful end from "exit" in a test. This patch fixes
scripts that don't call test_done.

Add --exclude-per-directory=<name> option that specifies a file
to contain exclude patterns local to that directory and its
subdirectories. Update the exclusion logic to be able to say
"include files that match this more specific pattern, even
though later exclude patterns may match them". Also enhances
that a pattern can contain '/' in which case fnmatch is called
with FNM_PATHNAME flag to match the entire path.
