7f1b225153 t7400: add !CYGWIN prerequisite to 'add with \\ in path'
Commit cf9e55f494 ("submodule: prevent backslash expantion in submodule
names", 07-04-2017) added a test which creates a git repository with
some backslash characters in the name. On windows, where the backslash
character is a directory separator, it is not possible to create a
repository with the name 'sub\with\backslash'. (The NTFS filesystem would
probably allow it, but the win32 api does not). The MinGW and Git for
Windows versions of git actually create a repository called 'backslash'
in the sub-directory 'sub/with'.

On cygwin, however, due to the slightly schizophrenic treatment of the
backslash character by cygwin-git, this test fails at the 'git init'
stage. The git-init command does not recognise the directory separators
in the input path (eg. is_dir_sep('\\') is false), so it does not
attempt to create the leading directories 'sub/with'. (The call to
mkdir('sub\\with\\backslash') actually does recognise the directory
separators, but fails because the 'sub/with' directory doesn't exist).

In order to suppress the test failure (for now), add the !CYGWIN test
prerequisite.

627fde1025 submodule_init: die cleanly on submodules without url defined
When we init a submodule, we try to die when it has no URL
defined:

  url = xstrdup(sub->url);
  if (!url)
	  die(...);

But that's clearly nonsense. xstrdup() will never return
NULL, and if sub->url is NULL, we'll segfault.

These two bits of code need to be flipped, so we check
sub->url before looking at it.

cf9e55f494 submodule: prevent backslash expantion in submodule names
When attempting to add a submodule with backslashes in its name 'git
submodule' fails in a funny way. We can see that some of the
backslashes are expanded resulting in a bogus path:

git -C main submodule add ../sub\\with\\backslash
fatal: repository '/tmp/test/sub\witackslash' does not exist
fatal: clone of '/tmp/test/sub\witackslash' into submodule path

To solve this, convert calls to 'read' to 'read -r' in git-submodule.sh
in order to prevent backslash expantion in submodule names.

bb62e0a99f clone: teach --recurse-submodules to optionally take a pathspec
Teach clone --recurse-submodules to optionally take a pathspec argument
which describes which submodules should be recursively initialized and
cloned. If no pathspec is provided, --recurse-submodules will
recursively initialize and clone all submodules by using a default
pathspec of ".". In order to construct more complex pathspecs,
--recurse-submodules can be given multiple times.

This also configures the 'submodule.active' configuration option to be
the given pathspec, such that any future invocation of `git submodule
update` will keep up with the pathspec.

Additionally the switch '--recurse' is removed from the Documentation as
well as marked hidden in the options array, to streamline the options
for submodules. A simple '--recurse' doesn't convey what is being
recursed, e.g. it could mean directories or trees (c.f. ls-tree) In a
lot of other commands we already have '--recurse-submodules' to mean
recursing into submodules, so advertise this spelling here as the
genuine option.

3e7eaed016 submodule init: initialize active submodules
Teach `submodule init` to initialize submodules which have been
configured to be active by setting 'submodule.active' with a pathspec.

Now if no path arguments are given and 'submodule.active' is configured,
`init` will initialize all submodules which have been configured to be
active. If no path arguments are given and 'submodule.active' is not
configured, then `init` will retain the old behavior of initializing all
submodules.

This allows users to record more complex patterns as it saves retyping
them whenever you invoke update.

619acfc78c submodule add: extend force flag to add existing repos
Currently the force flag in `git submodule add` takes care of possibly
ignored files or when a name collision occurs.

However there is another situation where submodule add comes in handy:
When you already have a gitlink recorded, but no configuration was
done (i.e. no .gitmodules file nor any entry in .git/config) and you
want to generate these config entries. For this situation allow
`git submodule add` to proceed if there is already a submodule at the
given path in the index.

1edbaac3bb tests: use test_i18n* functions to suppress false positives
The test functions test_i18ncmp and test_i18ngrep pretend success if run
under GETTEXT_POISON. By using those functions to test output which is
correctly marked as translatable, enables one to detect if the strings
newly marked for translation are from plumbing output. If they are
indeed from plumbing, the test would fail, and the string should be
unmarked, since it is not seen by users.

Thus, it is productive to not have false positives when running the test
under GETTEXT_POISON. This commit replaces normal test functions by
their i18n aware variants in use-cases know to be correctly marked for
translation, suppressing false positives.

f6a5279977 submodule deinit: require '--all' instead of '.' for all submodules
The discussion in [1] pointed out that '.' is a faulty suggestion as
there is a corner case where it fails:

> "submodule deinit ." may have "worked" in the sense that you would
> have at least one path in your tree and avoided this "nothing
> matches" most of the time. It would have still failed with the
> exactly same error if run in an empty repository, i.e.
>
>        $ E=/var/tmp/x/empty && rm -fr "$E" && mkdir -p "$E" && cd "$E"
> $ git init
> $ rungit v2.6.6 submodule deinit .
> error: pathspec '.' did not match any file(s) known to git.
> Did you forget to 'git add'?
>        $ >file && git add file
> $ rungit v2.6.6 submodule deinit .
> $ echo $?
> 0

So instead of a pathspec add the '--all' option to deinit all submodules
and add a test to check for the corner case of an empty repository.

The code only needs to learn about the '--all' option and doesn't
require further changes as `git submodule--helper list "$@"` will list
all submodules when "$@" is empty.

3fea121df3 recursive submodules: test for relative paths
"git submodule update --init --recursive" uses full path to refer to
the true location of the repository in the "gitdir:" pointer for
nested submodules; the command used to use relative paths.

This was reported by Norio Nomura in $gmane/290280.

The root cause for that bug is in using recursive submodules as
their relative path handling was broken in ee8838d (2015-09-08,

This regression was introduced in 74703a1e4d (submodule: rewrite
`module_list` shell function in C, 2015-09-02), as we changed the
order of checking in new module listing to first check whether it is
a gitlin before feeding it to match_pathspec(). It used to be that
a pathspec that does not match any path were diagnosed as an error,
but the new code complains for a pathspec that does not match any
submodule path.

Arguably the new behaviour may give us a better diagnosis, but that
is inconsistent with the suggestion "deinit" gives, and also this
was an unintended accident. The new behaviour hopefully can be
redesigned and implemented better in future releases, but for now,
switch these two checks to restore the same behavior as before. In
an empty repository, giving the pathspec '.' will still get the same
"did not match" error, but that is the same bug we had before 1.7.0.

2c63d6eb46 reset: handle submodule with trailing slash
When using tab-completion, a directory path will often end with a
trailing slash which currently confuses "git reset" when dealing with
submodules. Now that we have parse_pathspec we can easily handle this
by simply adding the PATHSPEC_STRIP_SUBMODULE_SLASH_CHEAP flag.

To do this, we need to move the read_cache() call before the
parse_pathspec() call. All of the existing paths through cmd_reset()
that do not die early already call read_cache() at some point, so there
is no performance impact to doing this in the common case.

    [submodule "foo-module"]

This is because the parsing of "submodule.*.path" is not prepared to

Fix it by checking the NULL-ness of value and complain with

of the now removed submodule and might irritate users (as opposed to the
setting in .git/config, this must stay as a reminder that the user showed
interest in this submodule so it will be repopulated later when an older
commit is checked out).

Let "git rm" help the user by not only removing the submodule from the
work tree but by also removing the "submodule.<submodule name>" section
from the .gitmodules file and stage both. This doesn't happen when the
"--cached" option is used, as it would modify the work tree. This also
silently does nothing when no .gitmodules file is found and only issues a
warning when it doesn't have a section for this submodule. This is because
the user might just use plain gitlinks without the .gitmodules file or has
already removed the section by hand before issuing the "git rm" command
(in which case the warning reminds him that rm would have done that for
him). Only when .gitmodules is found and contains merge conflicts the rm
command will fail and tell the user to resolve the conflict before trying
again.

Also extend the man page to inform the user about this new feature. While
at it promote the submodule sub-section to a chapter as it made not much
sense under "REMOVING FILES THAT HAVE DISAPPEARED FROM THE FILESYSTEM".

In t7610 three uses of "git rm submod" had to be replaced with "git rm
--cached submod" because that test expects .gitmodules and the work tree
to stay untouched. Also in t7400 the tests for the remaining settings in
the .gitmodules file had to be changed to assert that these settings are
missing.

The output of "git submodule deinit sub" of a populated submodule prints

  rm 'sub'

as the first line unless used with the -f option.

The "rm 'sub'" line is exactly the same output the user gets when using
"git rm sub" (because that command is used with the --dry-run option under
the hood to determine if the submodule is clean), which can easily lead to
the false impression that the submodule would be permanently removed. Also
users might be confused that the "rm 'submodule'" line won't show up when
the -f option is used, as the test is skipped in this case.

Silence the "rm 'submodule'" output by using the --quiet option for "git
rm" and always print

  Cleared directory 'submodule'

instead as the first output line. This line is printed as long as the
directory exists, no matter if empty or not.

Also extend the tests in t7400 to make sure the "Cleared directory" line
is printed correctly.

With "git submodule init" the user is able to tell git he cares about one
or more submodules and wants to have it populated on the next call to "git
submodule update". But currently there is no easy way he could tell git he
does not care about a submodule anymore and wants to get rid of his local
work tree (except he knows a lot about submodule internals and removes the
"submodule.$name.url" setting from .git/config together with the work tree
himself).

Help those users by providing a 'deinit' command. This removes the
whole submodule.<name> section from .git/config (either for the given
submodule(s) or for all those which have been initialized if '.' is used)
together with their work tree. Fail if the current work tree contains
modifications (unless forced), but don't complain when either the work
tree is already removed or no settings are found in .git/config.

Add tests and link the man pages of "git submodule deinit" and "git rm"

submodule is the right thing to do for him. Also add the deinit subcommand

If you remove a submodule, in order to keep the repository so that
"git checkout" to an older commit in the superproject history can
resurrect the submodule, the real repository will stay in $GIT_DIR
of the superproject. A later "git submodule add $path" to add a
different submodule at the same path will fail. Diagnose this case
a bit better, and if the user really wants to add an unrelated
submodule at the same path, give the "--name" option to give it a
place in $GIT_DIR of the superproject that does not conflict with
the original submodule.

4b7c286ec7 submodule add: Fail when .git/modules/<name> already exists unless forced
When adding a new submodule it can happen that .git/modules/<name> already
contains a submodule repo, e.g. when a submodule is removed from the work
tree and another submodule is added at the same path. But then the work
tree of the submodule will be populated using the existing repository and
not the one the user provided, which results in an incorrect work tree. On
the other hand the user might reactivate a submodule removed earlier, then
reusing that .git directory is the Right Thing to do.

As git can't decide what is the case, error out and tell the user she
should use either use a different name for the submodule with the "--name"
option or can reuse the .git directory for the newly added submodule by
providing the --force option (which only makes sense when the upstream
matches, so the error message lists all remotes of .git/modules/<name>).

In one test in t7406 the --force option had to be added to "git submodule
add", as that test re-adds a formerly removed submodule.

73b0898d0d Teach "git submodule add" the --name option
"git submodule add" initializes the name of a submodule to its path. This
was ok as long as the .git directory lived inside the submodule's work
tree, but since 1.7.8 it is stored in the .git/modules/<name> directory of
the superproject, making the submodule name survive the removal of the
submodule's work tree. This leads to problems when the user tries to add a
different submodule at the same path - and thus the same name - later, as
that will happily try to restore the submodule from the old repository
instead of the one the user specified and will lead to a checkout of the
wrong repository.

Add the new "--name" option to let the user provide a name for the
submodule. This enables the user to solve this conflict without having to
remove .git/modules/<name> by hand (which is no viable solution as it
makes it impossible to checkout a commit that records the old submodule
and populate it, as that will still check out the new submodule for the
same reason).

To achieve that the submodule's name is added to the parameter list of
the module_clone() helper function. This makes it possible to remove the
call of module_name() there because both callers of module_clone() already
know the name and can provide it as argument number two.

"git submodule" command DWIMs the command line and assumes a
unspecified action word for 'status' action. This is a UI mistake
that leads to a confusing behaviour. A mistyped command name is
instead treated as a request for 'status' of the submodule with that
name, e.g.

    $ git submodule show

Did you forget to 'git add'?

Stop DWIMming an unknown or mistyped subcommand name as pathspec

value is questionable.

be9d0a3a4c Let submodule command exit with error status if path does not exist
Various subcommands of the "git submodule" command exited with 0
status even though the path given by the user did not exist.

The reason behind that was that they all pipe the output of
module_list into the while loop which then does the action on the
paths specified by the commandline. Since the exit code of the
command on the upstream side of the pipe is ignored by the shell,
the status code of "ls-files --error-unmatch" nor "module_list" was
not propagated.

In case ls-files returns with an error code, we write a special
string that is not possible in non error situations, and no other
output, so that the downstream can detect the error and die with an
error code.

The error message that there is an unmatched pathspec comes through
stderr directly from ls-files. So the user still gets a hint whats going

c517e73d0f t7400: avoid path mangling issues
A recently introduced test uses an absolute path. But when run on Windows
using the MSYS bash, such a path is mangled into a Windows style path when
it is passed to 'git config'. The subsequent 'test' then compares the
mangled path to the unmangled version and reports a failure.

A path beginning with two slashes denotes a network directory
(//server/share path) and is not mangled. Use that trick to side-step the
issue. Just in case that 'git submodule init' regresses in such a way that
it accesses the URL, use a path name that is unlikely to exist on POSIX
systems, and that cannot be a server name on Windows.

d75219b4a8 submodules: always use a relative path from gitdir to work tree
Since recently a submodule with name <name> has its git directory in the
.git/modules/<name> directory of the superproject while the work tree
contains a gitfile pointing there. To make that work the git directory has
the core.worktree configuration set in its config file to point back to
the work tree.

That core.worktree is an absolute path set by the initial clone of the
submodule. A relative path is preferable here because it allows the
superproject to be moved around without invalidating that setting, so
compute and set that relative path after cloning or reactivating the
submodule.

This also fixes a bug when moving a submodule around inside the
superproject, as the current code forgot to update the setting to the new
submodule work tree location.

Since recently a submodule with name <name> has its git directory in the
.git/modules/<name> directory of the superproject while the work tree

to be cloned because it is not found in .git/modules/<name> the clone
command will write an absolute path into the gitfile. When no clone is
necessary the git directory will be reactivated by the git-submodule.sh
script by writing a relative path into the gitfile.

This is inconsistent, as the behavior depends on the submodule having been
cloned before into the .git/modules of the superproject. A relative path
is preferable here because it allows the superproject to be moved around
without invalidating the gitfile. We do that by always writing the
relative path into the gitfile, which overwrites the absolute path the
clone command may have written there.

This is only the first step to make superprojects movable again like they
were before the separate-git-dir approach was introduced. The second step
is to use a relative path in core.worktree too.

Enhance t7400 to ensure that future versions won't re-add absolute paths

The failing test does:

  ...
  git submodule sync relative &&
  test "$(git config submodule.relative.url)" = "$submodurl/repo"

where $submodurl comes from the $TRASH_DIRECTORY the user
gave us. However, git will resolve symlinks when converting
the relative path into an absolute one, leading them to be
textually different (even though they point to the same
directory).

ea640cc691 submodule: fix relative url parsing for scp-style origin
The function resolve_relative_url was not prepared to deal with an
scp-style origin 'user@host:path' in the case where 'path' is only a
single component. Fix this by extending the logic that strips one
path component from the $remoteurl.

Also add tests for both styles of URLs.

69e7236c6d git submodule: Remove now obsolete tests before cloning a repo
Since 55892d23 "git clone" itself checks that the destination path is not
a file but an empty directory if it exists, so there is no need anymore
for module_clone() to check that too.

Two tests have been added to test the behavior of "git submodule add" when
path is a file or a directory (A subshell had to be added to the former
last test to stay in the right directory).

This is generally easier to read and has the nice side-effect that

it easier to check for lost environment variables and similar

d27b876b28 git submodule add: Require the new --force option to add ignored paths
To make the behavior of "git submodule add" more consistent with "git add"
ignored submodule paths should not be silently added when they match an

31991b0260 git submodule: add submodules with git add -f <path>
Change `git submodule add' to add the new submodule <path> with `git
add --force'.

I keep my /etc in .git with a .gitignore that contains just
"*". I.e. `git status' will ignore everything that isn't in the tree
already. When I do:

    git submodule add <url> hlagh

git-submodule will get as far as checking out the remote repository
into hlagh, but it'll die right afterwards when it fails to add the
new path:

The following paths are ignored by one of your .gitignore files:
    hlagh
Use -f if you really want to add them.
    fatal: no files added
    Failed to add submodule 'hlagh'

Currently there's no way to add a submodule in this situation other
than to remove the ignored path from the .gitignore while I'm at it.

That's silly, when you run `git submodule add' you're explicitly
saying that you want to add something *new* to the repository. Instead
it should just add the path with `git add --force'.

Initially I implemented this by adding new -f and --force options to
`git submodule add'. But if the --force option isn't supplied it'll
get as far as cloning `hlagh', but won't add it.

So the first thing the user has to do is to remove `hlagh' and then
try again with the --force option.

That sucks, it should just add the path to begin with. I can't think
of any usecase where you've gone through the trouble of typing out
`git submodule add ..', but wish to be overriden by a `gitignore'. The
submodule semantics should be more like `git init', not `git add'.

ac8463d2b4 git submodule: Add test cases for git submodule add
Add simple test cases for adding and initialising submodules. The

The second test exposes a known breakage due to './' in the path: git
