d6c6b10817 t3[0-3]*: adjust the references to the default branch name "main"
Carefully excluding t3040, which sees independent development elsewhere
at the time of writing, we transition above-mentioned tests to the
default branch name `main`. This trick was performed via

	$ (cd t &&
	   sed -i -e 's/master/main/g' -e 's/MASTER/MAIN/g' \
		-e 's/Master/Main/g' -- t3[0-3]*.sh t3206/* &&
	   git checkout HEAD -- t3040\*)

This allows us to define `GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=main`
for those tests.

e023ff0691 t: remove test_oid_init in tests
Now that we call test_oid_init in the setup for all test scripts,
there's no point in calling it individually. Remove all of the places
where we've done so to help keep tests tidy.

7b1a1822fe t3308: make test work with SHA-256
Replace the hard-coded SHA-1 constants with the use of test_oid to look
up an appropriate constant for each hash algorithm.

ec21ac8c18 tests: use 'test_must_be_empty' instead of 'test_cmp /dev/null <out>'
Using 'test_must_be_empty' is more idiomatic than 'test_cmp /dev/null
out', and its message on error is perhaps a bit more to the point.

This patch was basically created by running:

  sed -i -e 's%test_cmp /dev/null%test_must_be_empty%' t[0-9]*.sh

with the exception of the change in 'should not fail in an empty repo'
in 't7401-submodule-summary.sh', where it was 'test_cmp output
/dev/null'.

f2515d919e t3308: create a real ref directory/file conflict
A test in t3308 wants to make sure that we don't
accidentally merge into "refs/notes/dir" when it exists as a
directory, so it does:

  mkdir .git/refs/notes/dir
  git -c core.notesRef=refs/notes/dir merge ...

and expects the second command to fail. But that
understimates the refs code, which is smart enough to remove
useless directories in the refs hierarchy. The test
succeeded only because of a bug which prevented resolving
refs/notes/dir for writing, even though an actual ref update
would succeed.

In preparation for fixing that bug, let's switch to creating
a real ref in refs/notes/dir, which is a more realistic
situation.

b3715b7522 notes: allow merging from arbitrary references
Create a new expansion function, expand_loose_notes_ref which will first
check whether the ref can be found using get_sha1. If it can't be found
then it will fallback to using expand_notes_ref. The content of the
strbuf will not be changed if the notes ref can be located using
get_sha1. Otherwise, it may be updated as done by expand_notes_ref.

Since we now support merging from non-notes refs, remove the test case
associated with that behavior. Add a test case for merging from a
non-notes ref.

2085b16aef git notes merge: Handle real, non-conflicting notes merges
This continuation of the 'git notes merge' implementation teaches notes-merge
to properly do real merges between notes trees: Two diffs are performed, one
from $base to $remote, and another from $base to $local. The paths in each
diff are normalized to SHA1 object names. The two diffs are then consolidated
into a single list of change pairs to be evaluated. Each change pair consist
of:

  - The annotated object's SHA1
  - The $base SHA1 (i.e. the common ancestor notes for this object)
  - The $local SHA1 (i.e. the current notes for this object)
  - The $remote SHA1 (i.e. the to-be-merged notes for this object)

From the pair ($base -> $local, $base -> $remote), we can determine the merge
result using regular 3-way rules. If conflicts are encountered in this
process, we fail loudly and exit (conflict handling to be added in a future
patch), If we can complete the merge without conflicts, the resulting
notes tree is committed, and the current notes ref updated.

The patch includes added testcases verifying that we can successfully do real
conflict-less merges.

This patch has been improved by the following contributions:
- Jonathan Nieder: Future-proof by always checking add_note() return value

75ef3f4a5c git notes merge: Initial implementation handling trivial merges only
This initial implementation of 'git notes merge' only handles the trivial
merge cases (i.e. where the merge is either a no-op, or a fast-forward).

The patch includes testcases for these trivial merge cases.

Future patches will extend the functionality of 'git notes merge'.

This patch has been improved by the following contributions:
