50f03c6676 Merge branch 'ab/free-and-null'
A common pattern to free a piece of memory and assign NULL to the
pointer that used to point at it has been replaced with a new
FREE_AND_NULL() macro.

6a83d90207 coccinelle: make use of the "type" FREE_AND_NULL() rule
Apply the result of the just-added coccinelle rule. This manually
excludes a few occurrences, mostly things that resulted in many
FREE_AND_NULL() on one line, that'll be manually fixed in a subsequent
change.

bc83266abe Convert lookup_commit* to struct object_id
Convert lookup_commit, lookup_commit_or_die,
lookup_commit_reference, and lookup_commit_reference_gently to take
struct object_id arguments.

Introduce a temporary in parse_object buffer in order to convert this
function.  This is required since in order to convert parse_object and
parse_object_buffer, lookup_commit_reference_gently and
lookup_commit_or_die would need to be converted.  Not introducing a
temporary would therefore require that lookup_commit_or_die take a
struct object_id *, but lookup_commit would take unsigned char *,
leaving a confusing and hard-to-use interface.

parse_object_buffer will lose this temporary in a later patch.

This commit was created with manual changes to commit.c, commit.h, and
object.c, plus the following semantic patch:

d026a25657 refs: kill set_worktree_head_symref()
70999e9cec (branch -m: update all per-worktree HEADs - 2016-03-27)
added this function in order to update HEADs of all relevant
worktrees, when a branch is renamed.

It, as a public ref api, kind of breaks abstraction when it uses
internal functions of files backend. With the introduction of
refs_create_symref(), we can move back pretty close to the code before
70999e9cec, where create_symref() was used for updating HEAD.

cddac45219 create_branch: use xstrfmt for reflog message
We generate a reflog message that contains some fixed text
plus a branch name, and use a buffer of size PATH_MAX + 20.
This mostly works if you assume that refnames are shorter
than PATH_MAX, but:

  1. That's not necessarily true. PATH_MAX is not always the
     filesystem's limit.

  2. The "20" is not sufficiently large for the fixed text
     anyway.

Let's just switch to a heap buffer so we don't have to even
care.

3818b258dc create_branch: move msg setup closer to point of use
In create_branch() we write the reflog msg into a buffer in
the main function, but then use it only inside a
conditional. If you carefully follow the logic, you can
confirm that we never use the buffer uninitialized nor write
when it would not be used. But we can make this a lot more
obvious by simply moving the write step inside the
conditional.

39ee4c6c2f branch: record creation of renamed branch in HEAD's log
Renaming the current branch adds an event to the current branch's log
and to HEAD's log.  However, the logged entries differ.  The entry in
the branch's log represents the entire renaming operation (the old and
new hash are identical), whereas the entry in HEAD's log represents
the deletion only (the new sha1 is null).

Extend replace_each_worktree_head_symref(), whose only caller is
branch_rename(), to take a reflog message argument.  This allows the
creation of the new ref to be recorded in HEAD's log.  As a result,
the renaming event is represented by two entries (a deletion and a
creation entry) in HEAD's log.

It's a bit unfortunate that the branch's log and HEAD's log now
represent the renaming event in different ways.  Given that the
renaming operation is not atomic, the two-entry form is a more
accurate representation of the operation and is more useful for
debugging purposes if a failure occurs between the deletion and
creation events.  It would make sense to move the branch's log to the
two-entry form, but this would involve changes to how the rename is
carried out and to how the update flags and reflogs are processed for
deletions, so it may not be worth the effort.

341fb28621 refs: add option core.logAllRefUpdates = always
When core.logallrefupdates is true, we only create a new reflog for refs
that are under certain well-known hierarchies. The reason is that we
know that some hierarchies (like refs/tags) are not meant to change, and
that unknown hierarchies might not want reflogs at all (e.g., a
hypothetical refs/foo might be meant to change often and drop old
history immediately).

However, sometimes it is useful to override this decision and simply log
for all refs, because the safety and audit trail is more important than
the performance implications of keeping the log around.

This patch introduces a new "always" mode for the core.logallrefupdates
option which will log updates to everything under refs/, regardless
where in the hierarchy it is (we still will not log things like
ORIG_HEAD and FETCH_HEAD, which are known to be transient).

4bd488ea7c create_branch: drop unused "head" parameter
This function used to have the caller pass in the current
value of HEAD, in order to make sure we didn't clobber HEAD.
In 55c4a6730, that logic moved to validate_new_branchname(),
which just resolves HEAD itself. The parameter to
create_branch is now unused.

Since we have to update and re-wrap the docstring describing
the parameters anyway, let's take this opportunity to break
it out into a list, which makes it easier to find the
parameters.

8d9fdd7087 worktree.c: check whether branch is rebased in another worktree
This function find_shared_symref() is used in a couple places:

1) in builtin/branch.c: it's used to detect if a branch is checked out
   elsewhere and refuse to delete the branch.

2) in builtin/notes.c: it's used to detect if a note is being merged in
   another worktree

3) in branch.c, the function die_if_checked_out() is actually used by
   "git checkout" and "git worktree add" to see if a branch is already
   checked out elsewhere and refuse the operation.

In cases 1 and 3, if a rebase is ongoing, "HEAD" will be in detached
mode, find_shared_symref() fails to detect it and declares "no branch is
checked out here", which is not really what we want.

This patch tightens the test. If the given symref is "HEAD", we try to
detect if rebase is ongoing. If so return the branch being rebased. This
makes checkout and branch delete operations safer because you can't
checkout a branch being rebased in another place, or delete it.

Special case for checkout. If the current branch is being rebased,
git-rebase.sh may use "git checkout" to abort and return back to the
original branch. The updated test in find_shared_symref() will prevent
that and "git rebase --abort" will fail as a result.
find_shared_symref() and die_if_checked_out() have to learn a new
option ignore_current_worktree to loosen the test a bit.

70999e9cec branch -m: update all per-worktree HEADs
When renaming a branch, currently only the HEAD of current working tree
is updated, but it must update HEADs of all working trees which point at
the old branch.

This is the current behavior, /path/to/wt's HEAD is not updated:

  /path/to/wt  2c3c5f2 [oldname]
  % git branch -m master master2
  % git worktree list

30598ad06f config: rename git_config_set to git_config_set_gently
The desired default behavior for `git_config_set` is to die
whenever an error occurs. Dying is the default for a lot of
internal functions when failures occur and is in this case the
right thing to do for most callers as otherwise we might run into
inconsistent repositories without noticing.

As some code may rely on the actual return values for
`git_config_set` we still require the ability to invoke these
functions without aborting. Rename the existing `git_config_set`
functions to `git_config_set_gently` to keep them available for
those callers.

27852b2c53 branch: report errors in tracking branch setup
When setting up a new tracking branch fails due to issues with
the configuration file we do not report any errors to the user
and pretend setting the tracking branch succeeded.

Setting up the tracking branch is handled by the
`install_branch_config` function. We do not want to simply die
there as the function is not only invoked when explicitly setting
upstream information with `git branch --set-upstream-to=`, but
also by `git push --set-upstream` and `git clone`. While it is
reasonable to die in the explict first case, we would lose
information in the latter two cases, so we only print the error
message but continue the program as usual.

7999b2cf77 Add several uses of get_object_hash.
Convert most instances where the sha1 member of struct object is
dereferenced to use get_object_hash.  Most instances that are passed to
functions that have versions taking struct object_id, such as
get_sha1_hex/get_oid_hex, or instances that can be trivially converted
to use struct object_id instead, are not converted.

41af65651d worktrees: add find_shared_symref
Add a new function, find_shared_symref, which contains the heart of
die_if_checked_out, but works for any symref, not just HEAD.  Refactor
die_if_checked_out to use the same infrastructure as
find_shared_symref.

Soon, we will use find_shared_symref to protect notes merges in
worktrees.

f932729cc7 memoize common git-path "constant" files
One of the most common uses of git_path() is to pass a
constant, like git_path("MERGE_MSG"). This has two
drawbacks:

  1. The return value is a static buffer, and the lifetime
     is dependent on other calls to git_path, etc.

  2. There's no compile-time checking of the pathname. This
     is OK for a one-off (after all, we have to spell it
     correctly at least once), but many of these constant
     strings appear throughout the code.

This patch introduces a series of functions to "memoize"
these strings, which are essentially globals for the
lifetime of the program. We compute the value once, take
ownership of the buffer, and return the cached value for
subsequent calls.  cache.h provides a helper macro for
defining these functions as one-liners, and defines a few
common ones for global use.

Using a macro is a little bit gross, but it does nicely
document the purpose of the functions. If we need to touch
them all later (e.g., because we learned how to change the
git_dir variable at runtime, and need to invalidate all of
the stored values), it will be much easier to have the
complete list.

Note that the shared-global functions have separate, manual
declarations. We could do something clever with the macros
(e.g., expand it to a declaration in some places, and a
declaration _and_ a definition in path.c). But there aren't
that many, and it's probably better to stay away from
too-magical macros.

Likewise, if we abandon the C preprocessor in favor of
generating these with a script, we could get much fancier.
E.g., normalizing "FOO/BAR-BAZ" into "git_path_foo_bar_baz".
But the small amount of saved typing is probably not worth
the resulting confusion to readers who want to grep for the
function's definition.

ed89f84b3c branch: publish die_if_checked_out()
git-worktree currently conflates new branch creation, setting of HEAD in
the new wortkree, and worktree population into a single sub-invocation
of git-checkout. However, these operations will eventually be separated,
and git-worktree itself will need to be able to detect if the branch is
already checked out elsewhere, rather than relying upon git-branch to
make this determination, so publish die_if_checked_out().

7695d118e5 refs.c: change resolve_ref_unsafe reading argument to be a flags field
resolve_ref_unsafe takes a boolean argument for reading (a nonexistent ref
resolves successfully for writing but not for reading).  Change this to be
a flags field instead, and pass the new constant RESOLVE_REF_READING when
we want this behaviour.

While at it, swap two of the arguments in the function to put output
arguments at the end.  As a nice side effect, this ensures that we can
catch callers that were unaware of the new API so they can be audited.

Give the wrapper functions resolve_refdup and read_ref_full the same
treatment for consistency.

db7516ab9f refs.c: pass the ref log message to _create/delete/update instead of _commit
Change the ref transaction API so that we pass the reflog message to the
create/delete/update functions instead of to ref_transaction_commit.
This allows different reflog messages for each ref update in a multi-ref
transaction.

d43f990fac branch.c: use ref transaction for all ref updates
Change create_branch to use a ref transaction when creating the new branch.

This also fixes a race condition in the old code where two concurrent
create_branch could race since the lock_any_ref_for_update/write_ref_sha1
did not protect against the ref already existing. I.e. one thread could end up
overwriting a branch even if the forcing flag is false.

540b0f4977 branch.c: replace git_config() with `git_config_get_string()
Use `git_config_get_string()` instead of `git_config()` to take advantage of
the config-set API which provides a cleaner control flow. While we are at
it, return -1 if we find no value for the queried variable. Original code
returned 0 for all cases, which was checked by `add_branch_desc()` in
fmt-merge-msg.c resulting in addition of a spurious newline to the `out`
strbuf. Now, the newline addition is skipped as -1 is returned to the caller
if no value is found.

aace438502 change git_config() return value to void
Currently `git_config()` returns an integer signifying an error code.
During rewrites of the function most of the code was shifted to
`git_config_with_options()`. `git_config_with_options()` normally
returns positive values if its `config_source` parameter is set as NULL,
as most errors are fatal, and non-fatal potential errors are guarded
by "if" statements that are entered only when no error is possible.

Still a negative value can be returned in case of race condition between
`access_or_die()` & `git_config_from_file()`. Also, all callers of
`git_config()` ignore the return value except for one case in branch.c.

Change `git_config()` return value to void and make it die if it receives
a negative value from `git_config_with_options()`.

cf4fff579e refactor skip_prefix to return a boolean
The skip_prefix() function returns a pointer to the content
past the prefix, or NULL if the prefix was not found. While
this is nice and simple, in practice it makes it hard to use
for two reasons:

  1. When you want to conditionally skip or keep the string
     as-is, you have to introduce a temporary variable.
     For example:

       tmp = skip_prefix(buf, "foo");
       if (tmp)
	       buf = tmp;

  2. It is verbose to check the outcome in a conditional, as
     you need extra parentheses to silence compiler
     warnings. For example:

       if ((cp = skip_prefix(buf, "foo"))
	       /* do something with cp */

Both of these make it harder to use for long if-chains, and
we tend to use starts_with() instead. However, the first line
of "do something" is often to then skip forward in buf past
the prefix, either using a magic constant or with an extra
strlen(3) (which is generally computed at compile time, but
means we are repeating ourselves).

This patch refactors skip_prefix() to return a simple boolean,
and to provide the pointer value as an out-parameter. If the
prefix is not found, the out-parameter is untouched. This
lets you write:

  if (skip_prefix(arg, "foo ", &arg))
	  do_foo(arg);
  else if (skip_prefix(arg, "bar ", &arg))
	  do_bar(arg);

9ef5e2a722 branch.c: delete size check of newly tracked branch names
Since commit 6f084a56 the length of a newly tracked branch name was limited
to 1019 = 1024 - 7 - 7 - 1 characters, a bound derived by having to store
this name in a char[1024] called key with two strings of length at most 7
and a '\0' character.

This was no longer necessary as of commit a9f2c136, which uses a strbuf
(documented in Documentation/technical/api-strbuf.txt) to store this value.

Remove this unneeded check to allow branch names longer than 1019
characters.

1d7358c524 branch.c: Relax unnecessary requirement on upstream's remote ref name
When creating an upstream relationship, we use the configured remotes and
their refspecs to determine the upstream configuration settings
branch.<name>.remote and branch.<name>.merge. However, if the matching
refspec does not have refs/heads/<something> on the remote side, we end
up rejecting the match, and failing the upstream configuration.

It could be argued that when we set up an branch's upstream, we want that
upstream to also be a proper branch in the remote repo. Although this is
typically the common case, there are cases (as demonstrated by the previous
patch in this series) where this requirement prevents a useful upstream
relationship from being formed. Furthermore:

 - We have fundamentally no say in how the remote repo have organized its
   branches. The remote repo may put branches (or branch-like constructs
   that are insteresting for downstreams to track) outside refs/heads/*.

 - The user may intentionally want to track a non-branch from a remote
   repo, by using a branch and configured upstream in the local repo.

Relaxing the checking to only require a matching remote/refspec allows the
testcase introduced in the previous patch to succeed, and has no negative
effect on the rest of the test suite.

This patch fixes a behavior (arguably a regression) first introduced in
41c21f2 (branch.c: Validate tracking branches with refspecs instead of
refs/remotes/*) on 2013-04-21 (released in >= v1.8.3.2).
