When a git_config() call was added in dbfae68969 (help: reuse
print_columns() for help -a, 2012-04-13) to read the column config
we'd always use the resulting "colopts" variable.
Then in 63eae83f8f (help: add "-a --verbose" to list all commands
with synopsis, 2018-05-20) we started only using the "colopts" config
under "--all" if "--no-verbose" was also given, but the "git_config()"
call was not moved inside the "verbose" branch of the code.
This change effectively does that, we'll only call list_commands()
under "--all --no-verbose", so let's have it look up the config it
needs. See 26c7d06783 (help -a: improve and make --verbose default, 2018-09-29) for another case in help.c where we look up config.
The get_colopts() function is named for consistency with the existing
get_alias() function added in 26c7d06783.

The "help" builtin has been able to emit configuration variables since
e17ca92637 (completion: drop the hard coded list of config vars,
2018-05-26), but it hasn't produced exactly the format the completion
script wanted. Let's do that.
We got partway there in 2675ea1cc0 (completion: use 'sort -u' to
deduplicate config variable names, 2019-08-13) and
d9438873c4 (completion: deduplicate configuration sections,
2019-08-13), but after both we still needed some sorting,
de-duplicating and awk post-processing of the list.
We can instead simply do the relevant parsing ourselves (we were doing
most of it already), and call string_list_remove_duplicates() after
already sorting the list, so the caller doesn't need to invoke "sort
-u". The "--config-for-completion" output is the same as before after
being passed through "sort -u".
Then add a new "--config-sections-for-completion" option. Under that
output we'll emit config sections like "alias" (instead of "alias." in
the --config-for-completion output).
We need to be careful to leave the "--config-for-completion" option
compatible with users git, but are still running a shell with an older
git-completion.bash. If we e.g. changed the option name they'd see
messages about git-completion.bash being unable to find the
"--config-for-completion" option.
Such backwards compatibility isn't something we should bend over
backwards for, it's only helping users who:
* Upgrade git
* Are in an old shell
* The git-completion.bash in that shell hasn't cached the old
"--config-for-completion" output already.
But since it's easy in this case to retain compatibility, let's do it,
the older versions of git-completion.bash won't care that the input
they get doesn't change after a "sort -u".
While we're at it let's make "--config-for-completion" die if there's
anything left over in "argc", and do the same in the new
"--config-sections-for-completion" option.

As preceding commits have incrementally established all of the --all,
--guides, --config and hidden --config-for-completion options are
mutually exclusive. So let's use OPT_CMDMODE() to parse the
command-line instead, and take advantage of its conflicting options
detection.
This is the first command with a hidden CMDMODE, so let's introduce a
OPT_CMDMODE_F() macro to go along with OPT_CMDMODE().
I think this makes the usage information that we emit slightly worse,
e.g. before we'd emit:
$ git help --all --config
fatal: --config and --all cannot be combined
usage: git help [-a|--all] [--[no-]verbose]]
[[-i|--info] [-m|--man] [-w|--web]] [<command>]
or: git help [-g|--guides]
or: git help [-c|--config]
[...]
$
And now:
$ git help --all --config
error: option `config' is incompatible with --all
$
But improving that is a general topic for parse-options.c improvement,
i.e. we should probably emit the full usage in that case.

The --all and --guides commands could be combined, which wouldn't have
any impact on the output except for:
git help --all --guides --no-verbose
Listing the guide alongside that output was clearly not intended, so
let's error out here. See 002b726a40 (builtin/help.c: add
list_common_guides_help() function, 2013-04-02) for the initial
implementation.

Fix a bug in the --config option that's been there ever since its
introduction in 3ac68a93fd (help: add --config to list all available
config, 2018-05-26). Die when --all and --config are combined,
combining them doesn't make sense.
The code for the --config option when combined with an earlier
refactoring done to support the --guide option in
65f98358c0 (builtin/help.c: add --guide option, 2013-04-02) would
cause us to take the "--all" branch early and ignore the --config
option.
Let's instead list these as incompatible, both in the synopsis and
help output, and enforce it in the code itself.

As noted in 65f98358c0 (builtin/help.c: add --guide option,
2013-04-02) and a133737b80 (doc: include --guide option description
for "git help", 2013-04-02) which introduced the --guide option, it
cannot be combined with e.g. <command>.
Change the command and the "SYNOPSIS" section to reflect that desired
behavior. Now that we assert this in code we don't need to
exhaustively describe the previous confusing behavior in the
documentation either, instead of silently ignoring the provided
argument we'll now error out.
The "We're done. Ignore any remaining args" comment added in
15f7d49438 (builtin/help.c: split "-a" processing into two,
2013-04-02) can now be removed, it's obvious that we're asserting the
behavior with the check of "argc".
The "--config" option is still missing from the synopsis, it will be
added in a subsequent commit where we'll fix bugs in its
implementation.

Clarify the usage string in the documentation so we group e.g. -i and
--info, and add the missing short options to the "-h" output.
The alignment of the second line is off now, but will be fixed with
another series of mine[1]. In the meantime let's just assume that fix
will make it in eventually for the purposes of this patch, if it's
misaligned for a bit it doesn't matter much.

Depending on the chosen format of help pages, git-help uses function
show_man_page, show_info_page, or show_html_page. The first thing all
three functions do is to convert given `git_cmd` to a `page` using
function cmd_to_page.
Move the common part of these three functions to function cmd_help to
avoid code duplication.

Since 1b81d8cb19 (help: use command-list.txt for the source of guides,
2018-05-20), all man5/man7 guides listed in command-list.txt appear in
the output of 'git help -g'.
However, 'git help -g' still prefixes this list with "The common Git
guides are:", which makes one wonder if there are others!
In the same spirit, the man page for 'git help' describes the '--guides'
option as listing 'useful' guides, which is not false per se but can
also be taken to mean that there are other guides that exist but are not
useful.
Instead of 'common' and 'useful', use 'Git concept guides' in both
places. To keep the code in line with this change, rename
help.c::list_common_guides_help to list_guides_help.

Starting in 3ac68a93fd, help.o began to depend on builtin/branch.o,
builtin/clean.o, and builtin/config.o. This meant that help.o was
unusable outside of the context of the main Git executable.
To make help.o usable by other commands again, move list_config_help()
into builtin/help.c (where it makes sense to assume other builtin libraries
are present).
When command-list.h is included but a member is not used, we start to
hear a compiler warning. Since the config list is generated in a fairly
different way than the command list, and since commands and config
options are semantically different, move the config list into its own
header and move the generator into its own script and build rule.
For reasons explained in 976aaedc (msvc: add a Makefile target to
pre-generate the Visual Studio solution, 2019-07-29), some build
artifacts we consider non-source files cannot be generated in the
Visual Studio environment, and we already have some Makefile tweaks
to help Visual Studio to use generated command-list.h header file.
Do the same to a new generated file, config-list.h, introduced by
this change.

We return the length to a subset of a string using an "int *"
out-parameter. This is fine most of the time, as we'd expect config keys
to be relatively short, but it could behave oddly if we had a gigantic
config key. A more appropriate type is size_t.
Let's switch over, which lets our callers use size_t as appropriate
(they are bound by our type because they must pass the out-parameter as
a pointer). This is mostly just a cleanup to make it clear this code
handles long strings correctly. In practice, our config parser already
chokes on long key names (because of a similar int/size_t mixup!).
When doing an int/size_t conversion, we have to be careful that nobody
was trying to assign a negative value to the variable. I manually
confirmed that for each case here. They tend to just feed the result to
xmemdupz() or similar; in a few cases I adjusted the parameter types for
helper functions to make sure the size_t is preserved.

"git cmd --help" when "cmd" is aliased used to only say "cmd is
aliased to ...". Now it shows that to the standard error stream
and runs "git $cmd --help" where $cmd is the first word of the
alias expansion.
This could be misleading for those who alias a command with options
(e.g. with "[alias] cpn = cherry-pick -n", "git cpn --help" would
show the manual of "cherry-pick", and the reader would not be told
to pay close attention to the part that describes the "--no-commit"
option until closing the pager that showed the contents of the
manual, if the pager is configured to restore the original screen,
or would not be told at all, if the pager simply makes the message
on the standard error scroll away.
* rv/alias-help:
git-help.txt: document "git help cmd" vs "git cmd --help" for aliases
git.c: handle_alias: prepend alias info when first argument is -h
help: redirect to aliased commands for "git cmd --help"
As discussed in the thread for v1 of this patch [1] [2], this changes the
rules for "git foo --help" when foo is an alias.
(1) When invoked as "git help foo", we continue to print the "foo is
aliased to bar" message and nothing else.
(2) If foo is an alias for a shell command, print "foo is aliased to
!bar" as usual.
(3) Otherwise, print "foo is aliased to bar" to the standard error
stream, and then break the alias string into words and pretend as if
"git word[0] --help" were called.
Getting the man page for git-cherry-pick directly with "git cp --help"
is consistent with "--help" generally providing more comprehensive help
than "-h". Printing the alias definition to stderr means that in certain
cases (e.g. if help.format=web or if the pager uses an alternate screen
and does not clear the terminal), one has
'cp' is aliased to 'cherry-pick -n'
above the prompt when one returns to the terminal/quits the pager, which
is a useful reminder that using 'cp' has some flag implicitly set. There
are cases where this information vanishes or gets scrolled
away, but being printed to stderr, it should never hurt.

When you type "git help" (or just "git") you are greeted with a list
with commonly used commands and their short description and are
suggested to use "git help -a" or "git help -g" for more details.
"git help -av" would be more friendly and inline with what is shown
with "git help" since it shows list of commands with description as
well, and commands are properly grouped.
"help -av" does not show everything "help -a" shows though. Add
external command section in "help -av" for this. While at there, add a
section for aliases as well (until now aliases have no UI, just "git
config").

version of --config where all the placeholders and wildcards are
dropped, leaving only the good, completable prefixes for
git-completion.bash to consume.

Sometimes it helps to list all available config vars so the user can
search for something they want. The config man page can also be used
but it's harder to search if you want to focus on the variable name,
for example.
This is not the best way to collect the available config since it's
not precise. Ideally we should have a centralized list of config in C
code (pretty much like 'struct option'), but that's a lot more work.
This will do for now.

This lists all recognized commands [1] by category. The group order
follows closely git.txt.
[1] We may actually show commands that are not built (e.g. if you set
NO_PERL you don't have git-instaweb but it's still listed here). I
ignore the problem because on Linux a git package could be split
anyway. The "git-core" package may not contain git-instaweb even if
it's built because it may end up in a separate package. We can't know
anyway.

When the user tries to use '--help' option on an aliased command
information about the alias is printed as sshown below,
$ git co --help
`git co' is aliased to `checkout'
This doesn't seem correct as the user has aliased only 'co' and not
'git co'. This might even be incorrect in cases in which the user has
used an alias like 'tgit'.
$ tgit co --help
`git co' is aliased to `checkout'
So, make the message more precise.

Introduce option --exclude-guides to the help command. With this option
being passed, "git help" will open man pages only for actual commands.
Since we know it is a command, we can use function help_unknown_command
to give the user advice on typos.

Since 4804aab (help (Windows): Display HTML in default browser using
Windows' shell API, 2008-07-13), Git for Windows used to call
`ShellExecute()` to launch the default Windows handler for `.html`
files.
The idea was to avoid going through a shell script, for performance
reasons.
However, this change ignores the `help.browser` config setting. Together
with browsing help not being a performance-critical operation, let's
just revert that patch.

Using FLEX_ARRAY macros reduces the amount of manual
computation size we have to do. It also ensures we don't
overflow size_t, and it makes sure we write the same number
of bytes that we allocated.

strncpy is known to be a confusing function because of its
termination semantics. These calls are all correct, but it
takes some examination to see why. In particular, every one
of them expects to copy up to the length limit, and then
makes some arrangement for terminating the result.
We can just use memcpy, along with noting explicitly how the
result is terminated (if it is not already obvious). That
should make it more clear to a reader that we are doing the
right thing.

When we are going to launch "/path/to/konqueror", we instead
rewrite this into "/path/to/kfmclient" by duplicating the
original string and writing over the ending bits. This can
be done more obviously with strip_suffix and xstrfmt.
Note that we also fix a subtle bug with the "filename"
parameter, which is passed as argv[0] to the child. If the
user has configured a program name with no directory
component, we always pass the string "kfmclient", even if
your program is called something else. But if you give a
full path, we give the basename of that path. But more
bizarrely, if we rewrite "konqueror" to "kfmclient", we
still pass "konqueror".
The history of this function doesn't reveal anything
interesting, so it looks like just an oversight from
combining the suffix-munging with the basename-finding.
Let's just call basename on the munged path, which produces
consistent results (if you gave a program, whether a full
path or not, we pass its basename).
Probably this doesn't matter at all in practice, but it
makes the code slightly less confusing to read.

This patch puts the usage info strings that were not already in docopt-
like format into docopt-like format, which will be a litle easier for
end users and a lot easier for translators. Changes include:
- Placing angle brackets around fill-in-the-blank parameters
- Putting dashes in multiword parameter names
- Adding spaces to [-f|--foobar] to make [-f | --foobar]
- Replacing <foobar>* with [<foobar>...]

The function sometimes returned a non-freeable memory and some
other times returned a piece of memory that must be freed.
* jc/exec-cmd-system-path-leak-fix:
system_path(): always return free'able memory to the caller
The function sometimes returns a newly allocated string and
sometimes returns a borrowed string, the latter of which the callers
must not free(). The existing callers all assume that the return
value belongs to the callee and most of them copy it with strdup()
when they want to keep it around. They end up leaking the returned
copy when the callee returned a new string because they cannot tell
if they should free it.
Change the contract between the callers and system_path() to make
the returned string owned by the callers; they are responsible for
freeing it when done, but they do not have to make their own copy to
store it away.
Adjust the callers to make sure they do not leak the returned string
once they are done, but do not bother freeing it just before dying,
exiting or exec'ing other program to avoid unnecessary churn.

The "Everyday GIT With 20 Commands Or So" is not accessible via the
Git help system. Move everyday.txt to giteveryday.txt so that "git
help everyday" works, and create a new placeholder file everyday.html
to refer people who follow existing URLs to the updated location.
giteveryday.txt now formats well with AsciiDoc as a man page and
refreshed content to a more command modern style.
Add 'everyday' to the help --guides list and update git(1) and 5
other links to giteveryday.

Most struct child_process variables are cleared using memset first after
declaration. Provide a macro, CHILD_PROCESS_INIT, that can be used to
initialize them statically instead. That's shorter, doesn't require a
function call and is slightly more readable (especially given that we
already have STRBUF_INIT, ARGV_ARRAY_INIT etc.).

Since 2dce956 is_git_command() is a bit slow as it does file I/O in
the call to list_commands_in_dir(). Avoid the file I/O by adding an
early check for the builtin commands.
