In `check_merge_bases()` there is an early success special case,
so we have introduced special error code
BISECT_INTERNAL_SUCCESS_MERGE_BASE (-11) which indicates early
success. This BISECT_INTERNAL_SUCCESS_MERGE_BASE is converted back
to BISECT_OK (0) in `check_good_are_ancestors_of_bad()`.
Update all callers to handle the error returns.

After completing a bisection, we print out the commit we found using an
internal version of diff-tree. The result is aesthetically lacking:
- it shows a raw diff, which is generally less informative for human
readers than "--stat --summary" (which we already decided was nice
for humans in format-patch's output).
- by not abbreviating hashes, the result is likely to wrap on most
people's terminals
- we don't use "-r", so if the commit touched files in a directory,
you only get to see the top-level directory mentioned
- we don't specify "--cc" or similar, so merges print nothing (not
even the commit message!)
Even though bisect might be driven by scripts, there's no reason to
consider this part of the output as machine-readable (if anything, the
initial "$hash is the first bad commit" might be parsed, but we won't
touch that here). Let's make it prettier and more informative for a
human reading the output.
While we're tweaking the options, let's also switch to using the diff
"ui" config. If we're accepting that this is human-readable output, then
we should respect the user's options for how to display it.
Note that we have to touch a few tests in t6030. These check bisection
in a corrupted repository (it's missing a subtree). They didn't fail
with the previous code, because it didn't actually recurse far enough in
the diff to find the broken tree. But now we'll see the corruption and
complain.
Adjusting the tests to expect the die() is the best fix. We still
confirm that we're able to bisect within the broken repo. And we'll
still print "$hash is the first bad commit" as usual before dying;
showing that is a reasonable outcome in a corrupt repository (and was
what might happen already, if the root tree was corrupt).

When we run our internal diff-tree to show the bisected commit, we call
init_revisions(), then load config, then setup_revisions(). But that
order is wrong: we copy the configured defaults into the rev_info struct
during the init_revisions step, so our config load wasn't actually doing
anything.

Commit e22278c0a0 (bisect: display first bad commit without forking a
new process, 2009-05-28) converted our external call to diff-tree to
an internal use of the log_tree_commit(). But rather than individually
setting options in the rev_info struct (and explaining in comments how
they map to command-line options), we can just pass the command-line
options to setup_revisions().
This is shorter, easier to change, and less likely to break if
revision.c internals change.
Note that we unconditionally set the output format to "raw". The
conditional in the original code didn't actually do anything useful,
since nobody had an opportunity to set the format to anything.

"git pack-objects" learned another algorithm to compute the set of
objects to send, that trades the resulting packfile off to save
traversal cost to favor small pushes.

When creating a pack-file using 'git pack-objects --revs' we provide
a list of interesting and uninteresting commits. For example, a push
operation would make the local topic branch be interesting and the
known remote refs as uninteresting. We want to discover the set of
new objects to send to the server as a thin pack.
We walk these commits until we discover a frontier of commits such
that every commit walk starting at interesting commits ends in a root
commit or unintersting commit. We then need to discover which
non-commit objects are reachable from uninteresting commits. This
commit walk is not changing during this series.
The mark_edges_uninteresting() method in list-objects.c iterates on
the commit list and does the following:
* If the commit is UNINTERSTING, then mark its root tree and every
object it can reach as UNINTERESTING.
* If the commit is interesting, then mark the root tree of every
UNINTERSTING parent (and all objects that tree can reach) as
UNINTERSTING.
At the very end, we repeat the process on every commit directly
given to the revision walk from stdin. This helps ensure we properly
cover shallow commits that otherwise were not included in the
frontier.
The logic to recursively follow trees is in the
mark_tree_uninteresting() method in revision.c. The algorithm avoids
duplicate work by not recursing into trees that are already marked
UNINTERSTING.
Add a new 'sparse' option to the mark_edges_uninteresting() method
that performs this logic in a slightly different way. As we iterate
over the commits, we add all of the root trees to an oidset. Then,
call mark_trees_uninteresting_sparse() on that oidset. Note that we
include interesting trees in this process. The current implementation
of mark_trees_unintersting_sparse() will walk the same trees as
the old logic, but this will be replaced in a later change.
Add a '--sparse' flag in 'git pack-objects' to call this new logic.
Add a new test script t/t5322-pack-objects-sparse.sh that tests this
option. The tests currently demonstrate that the resulting object
list is the same as the old algorithm. This includes a case where
both algorithms pack an object that is not needed by a remote due to
limits on the explored set of trees. When the sparse algorithm is
changed in a later commit, we will add a test that demonstrates a
change of behavior in some cases.

This function only compiles when DEBUG_BISECT is 1, which is often not
the case. As a result there are two commits [1] [2] that break it but
the breakages went unnoticed because the code did not compile by
default. Update the function and include the new header file to make this
function build again.
In order to stop this from happening again, the function is now
compiled unconditionally but exits early unless DEBUG_BISECT is
non-zero. A smart compiler generates no extra code (not even a
function call). But even if it does not, this function does not seem
to be in a hot path that the extra cost becomes a big problem.

This is the flip side of the previous two patches: checking
for a non-zero oidcmp() can be more strictly expressed as
inequality. Like those patches, we write "!= 0" in the
coccinelle transformation, which covers by isomorphism the
more common:
if (oidcmp(E1, E2))
As with the previous two patches, this patch can be achieved
almost entirely by running "make coccicheck"; the only
differences are manual line-wrap fixes to match the original
code.
There is one thing to note for anybody replicating this,
though: coccinelle 1.0.4 seems to miss the case in
builtin/tag.c, even though it's basically the same as all
the others. Running with 1.0.7 does catch this, so
presumably it's just a coccinelle bug that was fixed in the
interim.

Using the more restrictive oideq() should, in the long run,
give the compiler more opportunities to optimize these
callsites. For now, this conversion should be a complete
noop with respect to the generated code.
The result is also perhaps a little more readable, as it
avoids the "zero is equal" idiom. Since it's so prevalent in
C, I think seasoned programmers tend not to even notice it
anymore, but it can sometimes make for awkward double
negations (e.g., we can drop a few !!oidcmp() instances
here).
This patch was generated almost entirely by the included
coccinelle patch. This mechanical conversion should be
completely safe, because we check explicitly for cases where
oidcmp() is compared to 0, which is what oideq() is doing
under the hood. Note that we don't have to catch "!oidcmp()"
separately; coccinelle's standard isomorphisms make sure the
two are treated equivalently.
I say "almost" because I did hand-edit the coccinelle output
to fix up a few style violations (it mostly keeps the
original formatting, but sometimes unwraps long lines).

Add a repository argument to allow callers of lookup_commit_reference
to be more specific about which repository to handle. This is a small
mechanical change; it doesn't change the implementation to handle
repositories other than the_repository yet.
As with the previous commits, use a macro to catch callers passing a
repository other than the_repository at compile time.

In 7c117184d7 ("bisect: fix off-by-one error in
`best_bisection_sorted()`", 2017-11-05) the more careful logic dealing
with freeing p->next in 50e62a8e70 ("rev-list: implement
--bisect-all", 2007-10-22) was removed.
Restore the more careful check to avoid segfaulting. Ideally this
would come with a test case, but we don't have steps to reproduce
this, only a backtrace from gdb pointing to this being the issue.

The leak_pending flag is so awkward to use that multiple comments had to
be added around each occurrence. We only use it for remembering the
commits whose marks we have to clear after checking if all of the good
ones are ancestors of the bad one. This is easy, though: We need to do
that for the bad and good commits, of course.
Let check_good_are_ancestors_of_bad() create and own the array of bad
and good commits, and use it to clear the commit marks as well.

After we have sorted the `cnt`-many commits that we have selected, we
place them into the commit list. We then set `p->next` to NULL, but as
we do so, `p` is already pointing one beyond item number `cnt`. Indeed,
we check whether `p` is NULL before dereferencing it.
This only matters if there are TREESAME-commits. Since they should be
skipped, they are not included in `cnt` and we will hit the situation
where we set `p->next` to NULL. As a result, the list will be one longer
than it should be. The last commit in the list will be one which occurs
earlier, or which shouldn't be included.
Do not update `p` the very last round in the loop. This ensures that
after the loop, `p->next` points to the remainder of the list, and we
can set it to NULL. While we're here, free that remainder to fix a
memory leak.

`find_bisection()` rebuilds the commit list it is given by reversing it
and skipping uninteresting commits. The uninteresting list entries are

This function takes a commit list and returns a commit list. The
returned list is built by modifying the original list. Thus the caller
should not use the original list again (and after the next commit fixes
a memory leak, it must not).
Change the function signature so that it takes a **list and has void
return type. That should make it harder to misuse this function.
While we're here, document this function.

Reimplement `bisect_clean_state` shell function in C and add a
`bisect-clean-state` subcommand to `git bisect--helper` to call it from
git-bisect.sh .
Using `--bisect-clean-state` subcommand is a measure to port shell
function to C so as to use the existing test suite. As more functions
are ported, this subcommand will be retired but its implementation will
be called by bisect_reset() and bisect_start().
Also introduce a function `mark_for_removal` to store the refs which
need to be removed while iterating through the refs.

Setting `leak_pending = 1` tells `prepare_revision_walk()` not to
release the `pending` array, and makes that the caller's responsibility.
See 4a43d374f (revision: add leak_pending flag, 2011-10-01) and
353f5657a (bisect: use leak_pending flag, 2011-10-01).
Commit 1da1e07c8 (clean up name allocation in prepare_revision_walk,
2014-10-15) fixed a memory leak in `prepare_revision_walk()` by
switching from `free()` to `object_array_clear()`. However, where we use
the `leak_pending`-mechanism, we're still only calling `free()`.
Use `object_array_clear()` instead. Copy some helpful comments from
353f5657a to the other callers that we update to clarify the memory
responsibilities, and to highlight that the commits are not affected
when we clear the array -- it is indeed correct to both tidy up the
commit flags and clear the object array.
Document `leak_pending` in revision.h to help future users get this
right.

Update the C style recommendation for notes for translators, as
recent versions of gettext tools can work with our style of
multi-line comments.

Change all the "TRANSLATORS: [...]" comments in the C code to use the
regular Git coding style, and amend the style guide so that the
example there uses that style.
This custom style was necessary back in 2010 when the gettext support
was initially added, and was subsequently documented in commit
cbcfd4e3ea ("i18n: mention "TRANSLATORS:" marker in
Documentation/CodingGuidelines", 2014-04-18).
GNU xgettext hasn't had the parsing limitation that necessitated this
exception for almost 3 years. Since its 0.19 release on 2014-06-02
it's been able to recognize TRANSLATOR comments in the standard Git
comment syntax[1].
Usually we'd like to keep compatibility with software that's that
young, but in this case literally the only person who needs to be
using a gettext newer than 3 years old is Jiang Xin (the only person
who runs & commits "make pot" results), so I think in this case we can
make an exception.
This xgettext parsing feature was added after a thread on the Git
mailing list[2] which continued on the bug-gettext[3] list, but we
never subsequently changed our style & styleguide, do so.
There are already longstanding changes in git that use the standard
comment style & have their TRANSLATORS comments extracted properly
without getting the literal "*"'s mixed up in the text, as would
happen before xgettext 0.19.
Commit 7ff2683253 ("builtin-am: implement -i/--interactive",
2015-08-04) added one such comment, which in commit df0617bfa7 ("l10n:
git.pot: v2.6.0 round 1 (123 new, 41 removed)", 2015-09-05) got picked
up in the po/git.pot file with the right format, showing that Jiang
already runs a modern xgettext.
The xgettext parser does not handle the sort of non-standard comment
style that I'm amending here in sequencer.c, but that isn't standard
Git comment syntax anyway. With this change to sequencer.c & "make
pot" the comment in the pot file is now correct:

xfopen()
- provides error details
- explains error on reading, or writing, or whatever operation
- has l10n support
- prints file name in the error
Some of these are missing in the places that are replaced with xfopen(),
which is a clear win. In some other places, it's just less code (not as
clearly a win as the previous case but still is).
The only slight regresssion is in remote-testsvn, where we don't report
the file class (marks files) in the error messages anymore. But since
this is a _test_ svn remote transport, I'm not too concerned.

Convert lookup_commit, lookup_commit_or_die,
lookup_commit_reference, and lookup_commit_reference_gently to take
struct object_id arguments.
Introduce a temporary in parse_object buffer in order to convert this
function. This is required since in order to convert parse_object and
parse_object_buffer, lookup_commit_reference_gently and
lookup_commit_or_die would need to be converted. Not introducing a
temporary would therefore require that lookup_commit_or_die take a
struct object_id *, but lookup_commit would take unsigned char *,
leaving a confusing and hard-to-use interface.
parse_object_buffer will lose this temporary in a later patch.

While handy, "git_path()" is a dangerous function to use as a
callsite that uses it safely one day can be broken by changes
to other code that calls it. Reduction of its use continues.

We'd prefer to avoid unchecked snprintf calls because
truncation can lead to unexpected results.
These are all cases where truncation shouldn't ever happen,
because the input to snprintf is fixed in size. That makes
them candidates for xsnprintf(), but it's simpler still to
just use the heap, and then nobody has to wonder if "100" is
big enough.
We'll use xstrfmt() where possible, and a strbuf when we need
the resulting size or to reuse the same buffer in a loop.

Since we will likely be introducing a new hash function at some point,
and that hash function might be longer than 40 hex characters, use the
constant GIT_MAX_HEXSZ, which is designed to be suitable for
allocations, instead of GIT_SHA1_HEXSZ. This will ease the transition
down the line by distinguishing between places where we need to allocate
memory suitable for the largest hash from those where we need to handle
the current hash.

Git can't run bisect between 2048+ commits if use russian
translation, because the translated string is too long for the fixed
buffer it uses (this can be reproduced "LANG=ru_RU.UTF8 git bisect
start v4.9 v4.8" on linux sources).
Use xstrfmt() to format the message string to sufficiently sized
buffer instead to fix this.

The helper function tries to offer a way to conveniently show the
last one differently from others, presumably to allow you to say
something like
A, B, and C.
while iterating over a list that has these three elements.
However, there is only one caller, and it passes the same format
string "%s\n" for both the last one and the other ones. Retire the
helper function and update the caller with a simplified version.

"git bisect" makes an internal call to "git diff-tree" when
bisection finds the culprit, but this call did not initialize the
data structure to pass to the diff-tree API correctly.

init_revisions() initializes the rev_info struct to default
values, and setup_revisions() parses any command-line
arguments and finalizes the struct.
In e22278c (bisect: display first bad commit without forking
a new process, 2009-05-28), a show_diff_tree() was added
that calls the former but not the latter. It doesn't have
any arguments to parse, but it still should do the
finalizing step.
This may have caused other minor bugs over the years, but it
became much more prominent after fe37a9c (pretty: allow
tweaking tabwidth in --expand-tabs, 2016-03-29). That leaves
the expected tab width as "-1", rather than the true default
of "8". When we see a commit with tabs to be expanded, we
end up trying to add (size_t)-1 spaces to a strbuf, which
complains about the integer overflow.
The fix is easy: just call setup_revisions() with no
arguments.

Each of these cases can be converted to use ALLOC_ARRAY or
REALLOC_ARRAY, which has two advantages:
1. It automatically checks the array-size multiplication

type of the array.

The strbuf_getline() interface allows a byte other than LF or NUL as
the line terminator, but this is only because I wrote these
codepaths anticipating that there might be a value other than NUL
and LF that could be useful when I introduced line_termination long
time ago. No useful caller that uses other value has emerged.
By now, it is clear that the interface is overly broad without a
good reason. Many codepaths have hardcoded preference to read
either LF terminated or NUL terminated records from their input, and
then call strbuf_getline() with LF or NUL as the third parameter.
This step introduces two thin wrappers around strbuf_getline(),
namely, strbuf_getline_lf() and strbuf_getline_nul(), and
mechanically rewrites these call sites to call either one of
them. The changes contained in this patch are:
* introduction of these two functions in strbuf.[ch]
* mechanical conversion of all callers to strbuf_getline() with
either '\n' or '\0' as the third parameter to instead call the
respective thin wrapper.
After this step, output from "git grep 'strbuf_getline('" would
become a lot smaller. An interim goal of this series is to make
this an empty set, so that we can have strbuf_getline_crlf() take
over the shorter name strbuf_getline().

Convert most instances where the sha1 member of struct object is
dereferenced to use get_object_hash. Most instances that are passed to
functions that have versions taking struct object_id, such as
get_sha1_hex/get_oid_hex, or instances that can be trivially converted
to use struct object_id instead, are not converted.

The use of 'good/bad' in "git bisect" made it confusing to use when
hunting for a state change that is not a regression (e.g. bugfix).
The command learned 'old/new' and then allows the end user to
say e.g. "bisect start --term-old=fast --term=new=slow" to find a
performance regression.
Michael's idea to make 'good/bad' more intelligent does have
certain attractiveness ($gname/272867), and makes some of the work
on this topic a moot point.

One of the most common uses of git_path() is to pass a
constant, like git_path("MERGE_MSG"). This has two
drawbacks:
1. The return value is a static buffer, and the lifetime
is dependent on other calls to git_path, etc.
2. There's no compile-time checking of the pathname. This
is OK for a one-off (after all, we have to spell it
correctly at least once), but many of these constant
strings appear throughout the code.
This patch introduces a series of functions to "memoize"
these strings, which are essentially globals for the
lifetime of the program. We compute the value once, take
ownership of the buffer, and return the cached value for
subsequent calls. cache.h provides a helper macro for
defining these functions as one-liners, and defines a few
common ones for global use.
Using a macro is a little bit gross, but it does nicely
document the purpose of the functions. If we need to touch
them all later (e.g., because we learned how to change the
git_dir variable at runtime, and need to invalidate all of
the stored values), it will be much easier to have the
complete list.
Note that the shared-global functions have separate, manual
declarations. We could do something clever with the macros
(e.g., expand it to a declaration in some places, and a
declaration _and_ a definition in path.c). But there aren't
that many, and it's probably better to stay away from
too-magical macros.
Likewise, if we abandon the C preprocessor in favor of
generating these with a script, we could get much fancier.
E.g., normalizing "FOO/BAR-BAZ" into "git_path_foo_bar_baz".
But the small amount of saved typing is probably not worth
the resulting confusion to readers who want to grep for the
function's definition.

When not looking for a regression during a bisect but for a fix or a
change in another given property, it can be confusing to use 'good'
and 'bad'.
This patch introduce `git bisect new` and `git bisect old` as an
alternative to 'bad' and good': the commits which have a certain
property must be marked as `new` and the ones which do not as `old`.
The output will be the first commit after the change in the property.
During a new/old bisect session you cannot use bad/good commands and
vice-versa.
Some commands are still not available for old/new:
* git rev-list --bisect does not treat the revs/bisect/new and
revs/bisect/old-SHA1 files.

We create a file BISECT_TERMS in the repository .git to be read during a
bisection. There's no user-interface yet, but "git bisect" works if terms
other than old/new or bad/good are set in .git/BISECT_TERMS. The
fonctions to be changed if we add new terms are quite few.
In git-bisect.sh:

Instead of manually writing a pseudoref (in one case) and shelling out
to git update-ref (in another), use the update_ref function. This
is much simpler.

To add new tags like old/new and have keywords less confusing, the
first step is to avoid hardcoding the keywords.
The default mode is still bad/good.

Change typedef each_ref_fn to take a "const struct object_id *oid"
parameter instead of "const unsigned char *sha1".
To aid this transition, implement an adapter that can be used to wrap
old-style functions matching the old typedef, which is now called
"each_ref_sha1_fn"), and make such functions callable via the new
interface. This requires the old function and its cb_data to be
wrapped in a "struct each_ref_fn_sha1_adapter", and that object to be
used as the cb_data for an adapter function, each_ref_fn_adapter().
This is an enormous diff, but most of it consists of simple,
mechanical changes to the sites that call any of the "for_each_ref"
family of functions. Subsequent to this change, the call sites can be
rewritten one by one to use the new interface.

The get_merge_bases*() API was easy to misuse by careless
copy&paste coders, leaving object flags tainted in the commits that
needed to be traversed.

get_merge_bases(): always clean-up object flags
bisect: clean flags after checking merge bases
The callers of get_merge_bases() can choose to leave object flags
used during the merge-base traversal by passing cleanup=0 as a
parameter, but in practice a very few callers can afford to do so
(namely, "git merge-base"), as they need to compute merge base in
preparation for other processing of their own and they need to see
the object without contaminate flags.
Change the function signature of get_merge_bases_many() and
get_merge_bases() to drop the cleanup parameter, so that the
majority of the callers do not have to say ", 1" at the end.
Give a new get_merge_bases_many_dirty() API to support only a few
callers that know they do not need to spend cycles cleaning up the
object flags.
