DESCRIPTION

-----------

Create a new commit containing the current contents of the index and
the given log message describing the changes. The new commit is a
direct child of HEAD, usually the tip of the current branch, and the
branch is updated to point to it (unless no branch is associated with
the working tree, in which case HEAD is "detached" as described in
linkgit:git-checkout[1]).

The content to be committed can be specified in several ways:

index before using the 'commit' command (Note: even modified files

must be "added");

docs: stop using asciidoc no-inline-literal
In asciidoc 7, backticks like `foo` produced a typographic
effect, but did not otherwise affect the syntax. In asciidoc
8, backticks introduce an "inline literal" inside which markup
is not interpreted. To keep compatibility with existing
documents, asciidoc 8 has a "no-inline-literal" attribute to
keep the old behavior. We enabled this so that the
documentation could be built on either version.
It has been several years now, and asciidoc 7 is no longer
in wide use. We can now decide whether or not we want
inline literals on their own merits, which are:
1. The source is much easier to read when the literal
contains punctuation. You can use `master~1` instead
of `master{tilde}1`.
2. They are less error-prone. Because of point (1), we
tend to make mistakes and forget the extra layer of
quoting.
This patch removes the no-inline-literal attribute from the
Makefile and converts every use of backticks in the
documentation to an inline literal (they must be cleaned up,
or the example above would literally show "{tilde}" in the
output).
Problematic sites were found by grepping for '`.*[{\\]' and
examined and fixed manually. The results were then verified
by comparing the output of "html2text" on the set of
generated html pages. Doing so revealed that in addition to
making the source more readable, this patch fixes several
formatting bugs:
- HTML rendering used the ellipsis character instead of
literal "..." in code examples (like "git log A...B")
- some code examples used the right-arrow character
instead of '->' because they failed to quote
- api-config.txt did not quote tilde, and the resulting
HTML contained a bogus snippet like:
<tt></tt> foo <tt>bar</tt>
which caused some parsers to choke and omit whole
sections of the page.
- git-commit.txt confused ``foo`` (backticks inside a
literal) with ``foo'' (matched double-quotes)
- mentions of `A U Thor <author@example.com>` used to
erroneously auto-generate a mailto footnote for
author@example.com
- the description of --word-diff=plain incorrectly showed
the output as "[-removed-] and {added}", not "{+added+}".
- using "prime" notation like:
commit `C` and its replacement `C'`
confused asciidoc into thinking that everything between
the first backtick and the final apostrophe were meant
to be inside matched quotes
- asciidoc got confused by the escaping of some of our
asterisks. In particular,
`credential.\*` and `credential.<url>.\*`
properly escaped the asterisk in the first case, but
literally passed through the backslash in the second
case.

--fixup=[(amend|reword):]<commit>::
Create a new commit which "fixes up" `<commit>` when applied with
`git rebase --autosquash`. Plain `--fixup=<commit>` creates a
"fixup!" commit which changes the content of `<commit>` but leaves
its log message untouched. `--fixup=amend:<commit>` is similar but
creates an "amend!" commit which also replaces the log message of
`<commit>` with the log message of the "amend!" commit.
`--fixup=reword:<commit>` creates an "amend!" commit which
replaces the log message of `<commit>` with its own log message
but makes no changes to the content of `<commit>`.
+
The commit created by plain `--fixup=<commit>` has a subject
composed of "fixup!" followed by the subject line from <commit>,
and is recognized specially by `git rebase --autosquash`. The `-m`
option may be used to supplement the log message of the created
commit, but the additional commentary will be thrown away once the
"fixup!" commit is squashed into `<commit>` by
`git rebase --autosquash`.
+
The commit created by `--fixup=amend:<commit>` is similar but its
subject is instead prefixed with "amend!". The log message of
<commit> is copied into the log message of the "amend!" commit and
opened in an editor so it can be refined. When `git rebase
--autosquash` squashes the "amend!" commit into `<commit>`, the
log message of `<commit>` is replaced by the refined log message
from the "amend!" commit. It is an error for the "amend!" commit's
log message to be empty unless `--allow-empty-message` is
specified.
+
`--fixup=reword:<commit>` is shorthand for `--fixup=amend:<commit>
--only`. It creates an "amend!" commit with only a log message
(ignoring any changes staged in the index). When squashed by `git
rebase --autosquash`, it replaces the log message of `<commit>`
without making any other changes.
+
Neither "fixup!" nor "amend!" commits change authorship of
`<commit>` when applied by `git rebase --autosquash`.

commit: add support for --fixup <commit> -m"<extra message>"
Add support for supplying the -m option with --fixup. Doing so has
errored out ever since --fixup was introduced. Before this, the only
way to amend the fixup message while committing was to use --edit and
amend it in the editor.
The use-case for this feature is one of:
* Leaving a quick note to self when creating a --fixup commit when
it's not self-evident why the commit should be squashed without a
note into another one.
* (Ab)using the --fixup feature to "fix up" commits that have already
been pushed to a branch that doesn't allow non-fast-forwards,
i.e. just noting "this should have been part of that other commit",
and if the history ever got rewritten in the future the two should
be combined.
In such a case you might want to leave a small message,
e.g. "forgot this part, which broke XYZ".
With this, --fixup <commit> -m"More" -m"Details" will result in a
commit message like:
!fixup <subject of <commit>>
More
Details
The reason the test being added here seems to squash "More" at the end
of the subject line of the commit being fixed up is because the test
code is using "%s%b" so the body immediately follows the subject, it's
not a bug in this code, and other tests t7500-commit.sh do the same
thing.
When the --fixup option was initially added the "Option -m cannot be
combined" error was expanded from -c, -C and -F to also include
--fixup[1]
Those options could also support combining with -m, but given what
they do I can't think of a good use-case for doing that, so I have not
made the more invasive change of splitting up the logic in commit.c to
first act on those, and then on -m options.

When editing the commit message, start the editor with the
contents in the given file. The `commit.template` configuration
variable is often used to give this option implicitly to the
command. This mechanism can be used by projects that want to
guide participants with some hints on what to write in the message
in what order. If the user exits the editor without editing the
message, the commit is aborted. This has no effect when a message
is given by other means, e.g. with the `-m` or `-F` options.

The `trailer.*` configuration variables

EXAMPLES
--------
When recording your own work, the contents of modified files in
your working tree are temporarily stored to a staging area
2010-01-09 23:33:00 +00:00
called the "index" with 'git add'. A file can be
2007-11-12 04:43:00 +00:00
reverted back, only in the index but not in the working tree,
2019-04-25 09:45:58 +00:00
to that of the last commit with `git restore --staged <file>`,
2010-01-09 23:33:00 +00:00
which effectively reverts 'git add' and prevents the changes to
2007-11-12 04:43:00 +00:00
this file from participating in the next commit. After building
the state to be committed incrementally with these commands,
`git commit` (without any pathname parameter) is used to record what
2006-12-09 05:48:07 +00:00
has been staged so far. This is the most basic form of the
command. An example:
------------
$ edit hello.c
$ git rm goodbye.c

$ git add hello.c
$ git commit
------------
Instead of staging files after each individual change, you can
tell `git commit` to notice the changes to the files whose
contents are tracked in
your working tree and do corresponding `git add` and `git rm`
for you. That is, this example does the same as the earlier
example if there is no other change in your working tree:
------------
$ edit hello.c
$ rm goodbye.c
$ git commit -a
------------
The command `git commit -a` first looks at your working tree,
notices that you have modified hello.c and removed goodbye.c,
and performs necessary `git add` and `git rm` for you.
After staging changes to many files, you can alter the order the
changes are recorded in, by giving pathnames to `git commit`.
When pathnames are given, the command makes a commit that
only records the changes made to the named paths:
------------
$ edit hello.c hello.h
$ git add hello.c hello.h
$ edit Makefile
$ git commit Makefile
------------
This makes a commit that records the modification to `Makefile`.
The changes staged for `hello.c` and `hello.h` are not included
in the resulting commit. However, their changes are not lost --
they are still staged and merely held back. After the above
sequence, if you do:
------------
$ git commit
------------
this second commit would record the changes to `hello.c` and
`hello.h` as expected.

After a merge (initiated by 'git merge' or 'git pull') stops
2008-06-30 18:56:34 +00:00
because of conflicts, cleanly merged
2006-12-09 05:48:07 +00:00
paths are already staged to be committed for you, and paths that
conflicted are left in unmerged state. You would have to first
2010-01-09 23:33:00 +00:00
check which paths are conflicting with 'git status'
2006-12-09 05:48:07 +00:00
and after fixing them manually in your working tree, you would
2010-01-09 23:33:00 +00:00
stage the result as usual with 'git add':
2006-12-09 05:48:07 +00:00
------------
$ git status | grep unmerged
unmerged: hello.c
$ edit hello.c
$ git add hello.c
------------
After resolving conflicts and staging the result, `git ls-files -u`
would stop mentioning the conflicted path. When you are done,
run `git commit` to finally record the merge:
------------
$ git commit
------------
As with the case to record your own changes, you can use `-a`
option to save typing. One difference is that during a merge
resolution, you cannot use `git commit` with pathnames to
alter the order the changes are committed, because the merge
should be recorded as a single commit. In fact, the command
refuses to run when given pathnames (but see `-i` option).

COMMIT INFORMATION
------------------
Author and committer information is taken from the following environment
variables, if set:
GIT_AUTHOR_NAME
GIT_AUTHOR_EMAIL
GIT_AUTHOR_DATE
GIT_COMMITTER_NAME
GIT_COMMITTER_EMAIL
GIT_COMMITTER_DATE
(nb "<", ">" and "\n"s are stripped)
2020-01-22 03:45:41 +00:00
The author and committer names are by convention some form of a personal name
(that is, the name by which other humans refer to you), although Git does not
enforce or require any particular form. Arbitrary Unicode may be used, subject
to the constraints listed above. This name has no effect on authentication; for
that, see the `credential.username` variable in linkgit:git-config[1].
2020-01-22 03:45:39 +00:00
In case (some of) these environment variables are not set, the information
is taken from the configuration items `user.name` and `user.email`, or, if not
present, the environment variable EMAIL, or, if that is not set,
system user name and the hostname used for outgoing mail (taken
from `/etc/mailname` and falling back to the fully qualified hostname when
that file does not exist).
2020-01-22 03:45:40 +00:00
The `author.name` and `committer.name` and their corresponding email options
override `user.name` and `user.email` if set and are overridden themselves by
the environment variables.
The typical usage is to set just the `user.name` and `user.email` variables;
the other options are provided for more complex use cases.

DISCUSSION
----------
2007-01-17 06:53:28 +00:00
Though not required, it's a good idea to begin the commit message
2023-09-28 09:59:15 +00:00
with a single short (no more than 50 characters) line summarizing the
2007-01-17 06:53:28 +00:00
change, followed by a blank line and then a more thorough description.
2012-09-13 22:27:09 +00:00
The text up to the first blank line in a commit message is treated
2013-01-21 19:17:53 +00:00
as the commit title, and that title is used throughout Git.
2012-09-13 22:27:09 +00:00
For example, linkgit:git-format-patch[1] turns a commit into email, and it uses
the title on the Subject line and the rest of the commit in the body.

If `git commit` exits due to an error before creating a commit,
any commit message that has been provided by the user (e.g., in
an editor session) will be available in this file, but will be
